Writing tips: formatting
One of the great things about indie publishing is that you can do things yourself. But please know that just because you can, doesn't mean you should! Things like editing and cover design MUST be done by professionals. But the cool thing is that formatting is fairly accessible to the average person, but you'll be swapping out spending money for spending time.
So here are some basic formatting tips:
Learn industry and genre standards
Every new paragraph except for the first in the chapter and scene must be indented
Use drop caps, lead in small caps or both for the first sentence of each chapter
Chapter should start at least a third of the way down the page. But usually about half
Page numbers typically go in the footer
In the header have your name on one page and your book title on the other (alternate the whole way through). These do not go in the front matter or on the first page of each chapter
Make sure your formatting is consistent the whole way through!
Front matter is everything before the first chapter, back matter is everything after the actual book (acknowledgments etc)
Justify text to both sides (so it's even). You can use hyphens to help with this
Check what the minimal requirements for margins are with your publisher (Ingram, kdp etc)
Use a normal, easy to read font. Times New Roman is the standard.
Use hyperlinks in your ebooks! Link directly to your other books, author socials and website. List them in your print copies
I'm using Atticus to format my debut and it's been fantastic so far.

End of the Year Give Away!
Do you need gifts for the upcoming holiday season? I have the perfect gift for anyone who likes to read YA Fantasy.
My book The Rose Petal is the first book in a 4 book YA fantasy series, the start of an epic adventure following 16-year-old Rose as she struggles to find herself and her magical power.
Rose lives in a world with magic. Spells. Vampires. Witches. All of this is normal, but she lacks magic ability of her own. She feels lost until one day she falls into another world not unlike her own, except for one glaring dark difference.
The Drainer...and he is coming for her.
If this piques your interest, here is a video of me reading the first chapter.
The second book is also out: Broken Time sold anywhere online, just like the first book. I can’t include a synopsis without giving spoilers.
I want to do a free give away for the end of the year. If you’re interested in my first book or want to get it for someone, here are the instructions:
1. Follow me
2. Reblog this post so it can reach more people
3. Comment “I want a copy” in the notes
This give-away will go from today (10/15/22) until October 31st. I will announce a winner on November 1st, 2022. If you are the winner, I will message you and ask for a mailing address. For your own safety, please wait for me to message you.  Please have it so other bloggers can message you - not just mutuals!
To save myself time and money, I will buy a copy from an online store and send it directly to the winner. That being said, it won’t be signed.
Thank you for reading and I hope you enjoy!
C. Casarico.

Even when she was a small child in the early 1980s, in Copenhagen, Marie Arleth Skov was fascinated by the look of punks. In this installment of #ForewordThisWeek, she's here to regale us with a few stories about those punksters of the recent past!
Check back with us every week for these great interviews with indie authors.

Here’s what happens when your book goes viral
Last month my book After Tonight, Everything Will Be Different was the subject of a TikTok post that went viral. I've been on the receiving end of that before when The DIY Guide to Fighting the Big Motherfuckin' Sad went viral on tumblr, but this has been different. After Big Sad went viral, things got wild for a couple days. The first day I think I sold about 1,000 copies, maybe a little more. The next day was good too, but by the third day things began to slow down considerably. Big Sad still sells around 5,000 or 6,000 copies a year, but a lot of those are through shops and distributors like Ingram and AK Press and the orders placed with me are steady but not at all frantic. These days the fiction stuff does better and I'm glad about that. This round of viral stuff with After Tonight has not slowed down in any substantial way. The first maybe four days were just absolutely bonkers. All the online shops and distributors sold out the first day then my own webstore was hit harder than I've ever imagined it possible. The week it happened, the orders didn't stop coming in. Every minute or so a new one came in. My phone was buzzing out of my damn pocket with notifications. Then it slowed down to, say, 50 orders a day. Still really good. Fifty a day is very, very nice. But then something weird happened. It picked back up again. Now it'll slow down a bit for half a day then suddenly a bunch of orders will just gush right in; often a whole batch of them from the same town (maybe a group of friends?). It goes in these weird peaks and valleys all day, but a month in it's still running strong. A weird side effect is all the extra, unsolicited attention it's getting. There have been multiple requests to obtain TV and movie rights. That part I'm not super into because After Tonight would be a terrible movie or show. The next book, The Internet Newspaper, would make a good film I think, like in a Less Than Zero or Bight Lights, Big City way, but After Tonight? No. My inbox is also full of messages from literary agents and entertainment lawyers. None of which I've answered. I will, I think. But for now I have to get my head straight. So it's been strange and good. If you're someone who has ordered the book because of the post, thank you. What I want most in life (besides being around those I love) is for people to read my books. I'm extremely grateful. I can't stress that enough. It's some real dream-come-true shit. I'm sure it'll stop at some point, because everything does, but for now it feels pretty damn good. -Adam Gnade

My number one tip for starting your indie publishing journey?
Give yourself time.
These people that publish a book every three months had a back log of books! (And they're generally 50 000-65 000 words, sometimes shorter!).
But even forgetting that for a moment. Publishing is stressful, and your first one is going to be even more stressful! However long you think each step is going to take, add an extra few days- a week to it! If something goes wrong (and it will) you'll be able to fix it.
I gave myself 6 months to publish my debut (already written), knowing that if everything went smoothly I could have it out in 3 or 4. Everything's now finished, ready to upload and I'm two months out from release. And I don't mind! Because it gives me more time to focus on my pre-order campaign! (I don't have to upload a bad doc just to be able to do preorders while also trying to edit or whatever). I have time to market and learn more about the industry. I'm glad for it! And it means that now, because I know how long this stuff takes, I can adjust my timeline for book 2.
Time is important! It saves on stress. Not to say I'm not stressed, but it could be so much worse!

And on this 13th Day of Pride, something shambles forth from the shadows...
Tumblr media
Introducing With Teeth Press -- a new publishing house dedicated to works of Horror, the Gothic, the Weird, and all shades of the macabre in between. We’re interested in projects ranging from fictional to academic and hybrids of all kinds; if it falls under our banner of “Nerds and Knives,” it belongs in our kind of darkness.
Co-founded by friends and colleagues Christie Lauder (she/her) and Avery Morrison (they/she), themselves both queer horror academics and fiction writers. With Teeth Press is a labor of love and a longtime dream finally realized: Horror Stories and Scholarship Proudly by Us, for Us. We believe in the survival-granting power of scary stories. We believe in the occasional need for sharp claws. We believe in highlighting and supporting the full-throated voices of queer and marginalized writers. As the world around us is determined to get scarier in its own way, we decided it was time to respond in kind: with teeth bared.
We’ll be working hard over the summer to get things up and running close to our beloved Spooky Season, but we also wanted to be here to celebrate this wonderful month with y’all. We’re excited to share what we have planned while meeting new writers, critics, and voices along the way.
Watch this space, and feel free to get in touch on any of the platforms listed at withteethpress.carrd.co. Follow us on individually on social media — Christie at _slaybelle_ on Instagram, Aves on any listed at avesferatu.carrd.co. You’re also more than welcome to drop us a line here, if you like; Aves is always down to answer questions if needed.
In the meantime: stay safe, stay proud, and don’t be afraid to show them your teeth.
