blah blah blah aging tumblr population etc etc if you are ever visiting a family that just had a baby, and you know that they have other small children, bring a little something for each of the other kids. it doesn’t have to be anything fancy but, even the most charitable, well-behaved child starts feeling left out and lonely after the nth visitor brings gifts and attention for their parents and new sibling and, either isn’t there for them at all or the only engage with them about their baby sibling, especially since their parents have probably been completely consumed with the new baby. make their day and they will remember that bit of kindness and attention from you forever.

hey, Leverage peeps, I've got a thought. I've seen a lot of posts and memes joking about Nate's inability to understand that his clients do not want money, they want revenge. I also find this funny. but I was thinking about it and I realized something: there's a personal reason behind it. there is a very, very good reason why Nate doesn't get that.

Nate's drive to lead Leverage, outside of the crew, originated from his son's death due to his insurance company's refusal to cover the bill for the required treatment. we all know this. if his company had paid for Sam's treatment, everything would've been fine.

…or, if Nate had been a little wealthier, had a little more change to spend… maybe he could've paid for it. maybe Blackpool never would've had a say in any of it. maybe Nate would've had everything under control from the start.

we've discussed at length in the fandom how money equals safety for some of the others in the crew (Parker and Hardison grew up with little to none and know its importance to survival, Eliot needs it to stay ahead of his old enemies, etc.), but I don't know that I've seen any discussion on how it's relevant to Nate. for him, however, money equals security in healthcare and in housing (he lost the house, remember?). Nate's older than the others. he remained in the same place for much longer, and he had a stable life for a while. the others haven't been in that position before. many of their clients, however, are at that place in life.

yes, for the others, money keeps them ahead of the game and it keeps them secure. but none of them ever lost a kid because they couldn't pay for healthcare. none of them risk losing the life of someone who is completely dependent on them when they don't have enough.

(Hardison, perhaps, has the closest understanding, considering he hacked a bank to pay for his Nana's healthcare. but he never lost her.)

Nate thinks ahead, you know? he has a long-term view of things. I imagine that for him, when clients refuse the money, they're not just refusing a month's worth of groceries, or a place to stay the night, or the ability to keep running. for him, they're refusing control over their hard-earned, stable, long-term living situation. they're refusing the potential to save a family member's life.

I dunno, guys. I think that's a pretty good reason to not understand why people don't want the money.

Maddy took a deep breath while laying down in her backyard, running her hand over her face.

"How is college application going?"

"Nonexistent."

She turned around to face her slightly pregnant friend. "What do you mean nonexistent?"

She shrugged, replying with a dry tone. "It means I'm 17 and pregnant, and I don't want to be a college student and a mother at the same time."

"So? Your parents offered all the help to raise it, you can go to college and during the weekends be with it." Maddy tried to hide the distaste she felt towards the small thing currently existing in her friends abdomen, seeing it as the biggest impediment in both their lives.

"It isn't an it anymore it's a she."

"I don't give a fuck what it is, what I care about is that you're not going to college because of it." She turned her head around to face her friend, practically seeing smoke coming out of her ears and nose.

"Mads, she isn't the guilty one, you said it, my parents offered to raise her."

"Then why are you not going?"

"I don't want someone else raising my child, I don't want her to see her childhood as a period where I was too preoccupied studying to be her mother." This time she really looked at Maddy. She looked at her as if gazing into her eyes would connect with her soul. She wasn't just looking at her, she was trying to explain in a too deeply way her reasons that had already become a stable decision.

"She won't remember."

"She will know eventually."

"If you don't go now, you will never go."

"Lorelei Gilmore did it."

"Fuck her." Y/N broke off eye contact to laugh. She liked Maddy because her abrasiveness did just that, in high tension moments, it acted as a terminator, making it all disappear ear. "Don't laugh, I didn't say that for you to laugh."

"Why are you so mad about this, Mads?" Her friend scoffed, looking away, as if the racional answer was somehow in the clouds or the sky.

"What about me?" Y/N was too confused by the question to read her friends body language.

"I mean, you're like the number one not fan of the baby, but I guess you can be the godmother. Or you could learn how to cook and we could start an inn and raise a bratty and train-wreck kid." Maddy stood up, still not turning around to face her friend.

"What about me, Y/N?"

"Mads, I don't understand what you're asking." She finally turned around, facing her friend. Y/N could now see her face, red and with a few angry tears falling down her cheeks.

"What about me, Y/N? If you don't make it out, what does that mean about me? If this has happened to you, there's no hope for me."

"Maddy..."

"No, don't sugar coat it. I was rooting for you, I was. My mother was proud of me whenever she saw us together, she could see me actually doing something with my life. And now you're here, giving up, ruining your life for a baby you haven't planned and stuck to a guy that is set on ruining your life. If that's what you get, I don't want to know what's waiting for me." She took a deep breath and kneeled down beside her friend. "You've given up on yourself, but I won't. I won't because I refuse to believe this is all there's going to be to your life."

Y/N leaned forward to hug her friend, squishing her as if that would make all her worries evaporate. "I have not given up on you, Maddy Perez, and I'll never will."

They both stood there, for as long as they needed, crying and sometimes laughing, trying to find humor in their seemingly dooming predicament.

Not really. Like, yes he was arrested, but he was never officially charged with or convicted of anything. There isn't anything for the Canadian police to see.

I am sure it's mentioned once or twice, but honestly... a lot of people protested Bush in 2003-2005...

Nate was pretty sure he couldn’t have met Dick’s estranged little brother on worse terms. Okay, that wasn’t entirely true. He could’ve been dead. But still, something about saving the kid from certain destruction wasn’t exactly how he wanted to introduce himself.

Archie Grayson, full name Archibald because his parents probably hated him, had to be rescued from juvie, which was probably the best case of situational irony Nate had ever experienced.

Nate didn’t even remember to introduce himself until he was unlocking the kid’s handcuffs.

“Who the hell are you?” Archie asked, as Nate hummed to himself, trying to listen for the footsteps of the incoming guards.

Archie awkwardly craned his neck to get a look at him and Nate grinned.

“Hi, I’m Nate. Your brother’s boyfriend, and also the guy who’s getting you out of this shithole.”

Archie blinked three times in rapid succession, obviously trying to process all of the words just spoken. Nate let out a whoop as the cuffs opened.

“Why are you rescuing me? Did Dick ask you to?” Archie asked. He sounded weirdly hopeful.

Nate hated to crush his spirit. “Nope. But I’m here to get you because there’s a hit on your head.”

“What do you m-”

Nate shushed him as a whole herd of guard came running into the holding cell. “I’ll explain later,” he grabbed a throwing knife from his back pocket. “I hope you have a weapon.”

the bedroom door creaks open, forcing you to open your eyes. you find nick and madi peaking their heads through the doorframe.

"wake up guys," nick laughs, "you were supposed to be up an hour ago so we can go film."

you, nate, madi, and the triplets all went up to the cabin for the weekend. you're supposed to film today, but your tired and want to stay cozied up next to nate forever. but you know thats not gonna happen.

rolling over, you face nate. hes rubbing his eyes, trying to adjust his eyes to now being awake.

"guys," madi trails on and opening the door farther, "get up."

you groan, hiding your face in nates neck. trying to drown out the bright light spilling in from the hallway.

nate presses a quick kiss to your forehead, rubbing at the nape of your neck. "yeah, yeah. we'll get up." he mumbles.

nick sighs, "fine but you have maybe thirty seconds before chris comes running up here."

"i can do thirty seconds." you say, your voice muffled against nates skin.

madi giggles before the door closes.

you hug nate tighter, pressing a kiss against his neck, and then dropping your head again. trying to stay as comfortable as possible until chris comes barging in.

nathan rubs light circles into the back of your neck, trying to take in the next twenty seconds as well. only to be cut short when the door is flung open, giving you fifteen seconds instead of thirty.

you huff annoyedly before sitting up and stretching your arms. shooting a quick glare at chris and mumbling, "i'm up."
