Here's a little secret about NaNoWriMo: it isn't 50k or bust.

Take it from someone who's done it for 14 years. We love our 50k, yeah! Nice big, round number, has a good ring to it. It's traditional.

But listen, if 50k is too much for you? If you're finding yourself already wanting to drop out on Day 5 because you realized writing 1,667 words a day is kind of a lot actually? Stop trying to write that much!!

But don't stop writing.

(unless you need/want to do that too, in which case halt! go no further! take your rest!)

Otherwise, just simplify the goal. Or, don't even give yourself a goal if that sounds better. Just write how much you want to write, whenever you want to write it, and enjoy being surrounded by other writers doing the same.

No Wrimo with half an ounce of decency is gonna try to kick you out of the community because you decided not to go for the big 5-0. We're just happy to see you here. Check out the NaNo forums, the writeblr tags, your local in-person events, the discord servers, or just connect with a couple of creative friends and do NaNoWriMo the only way it's meant to be done: with joy for the craft, support for your fellow writers, and most importantly celebration for your work.

Forget 50k. You're just here to write, and the rest of us are here to cheer you on.

“It’s the start of Nanowrimo,” the writer said.

The character looked up from their phone for a moment. They wiggled their socked feet hanging off the edge of the couch. “So?”

“So get up, get dressed, get out there,” the writer said. They reached over the back of the couch and plucked the phone from the character’s grip. They frowned. “Are you texting your rival?”

“Not my rival until you set the circumstances,” the character said. They brought their arms over their head in a stretch. “Until then they’re just hot.”

The writer couldn’t deny it. The rival was very hot. “I need you to get up for me to set the circumstances.”

The character grinned. “You didn’t do any Nano prep, did you?”

They did not.

“I just need you to sort of stand next to them,” the writer said defensively. “It’ll come to me then.”

“Sure, sure,” the character said in a sing-song voice. They slunk towards the door. “Maybe it won’t be enough for me to stand next to them. Maybe I’ll need to hold their hand to inspire you.”

The writer swallowed. “I’m sure that won’t be necessary—“

“Maybe we should kiss.”

“No, that’s—“

“Be right back,” the character called, disappearing down the hall. “Gonna go kiss my hot rival!”

“No!” The writer booked it after them. “No, no kissing!”

The character laughed.

hello! as i'm currently in the trenches working through my first draft for nanowrimo, i figured i would update my intro to be more accurate (my old one was from three years ago 🤡)

about me

im h/helena, she/her, 22 and a recent uni graduate with a lot of time on my hands i love literally all genres but for some reason i seem to write romances the most, despite them being my least favourite to read??? wild. i am absolutely terrible at finishing any sort of writing project, so im hoping this will give me some more accountability i mainly write scripts, but im trying to branch out into writing stories that aren't just dialogue i follow/interact from @grgie

KISS & CRY // queer sports rivalry. >> nanowrimo 2022. saima laukkanen is a finnish figure skater who finds that despite everything, she can't get her annoying canadian rival, mattie leon, out of her head. must be because she's competitive. no other reason.

AGENT KNIGHT // heist thriller. agent corinne knight is the best in her job. until josh king comes along and tries to usurp her position. (he fails). buddy comedy except they actually hate each other.

DEAD SERIOUS // horror mystery podcast. when chris and jj discover that they can speak to ghosts, they set about interviewing their local dead, and manage to uncover a consipacy bigger than the both of them along the way. this wip is old af but i am determined to revisit the scripts.

i have many many more wips but these are my beloved ones currently (including but not limited to a love island ripoff with fake dating, roller derby found family, a modern western inspired murder mystery and a bunch of fanfics)
