I want to read solo leveling fics that incorporate more of seoul's special characteristics.
For instance, Seoul has a LOT of underground markets. Some of the underground markets are connected to the metro stations. Some of them are not. They are all great for crossing busy intersections without waiting for the pedestrian lights to turn green - you can just take the stairs down to the underground market and go through one of the dozens of exits they have.
Beru, as an ant, naturally likes hanging out at the underground markets the most. Being underground is the most comfortable to him and his ant instincts.
(But also think about social media. There's going to be dozens of tiktok videos about how, when visiting Seoul, make sure to stop by the Hapjeong Station's underground market because S ranked Hunter Sung Jinwoo's monster is known to be a regular visitor at the rice cake stall there. And that's station is a 5 minute walk from the World cup Market (Mangwon Market) anyways, so you should stop by that station regardless.)
S ranked Sung Jinwoo, now that money isn't a problem, takes his sister out for a day at Lotte World, an amusement park.
What about how Sung Jinwoo's very basic English skills is the result of him having a go at being a street food vendor in downtown Myeongdong night market where much of the foreign tourists couldn't speak Korean? He sold Japchae noodles for 5000 won a serving.

ʚɞ ; exploring seoul with haseong!
pairing! boyfriend!haseong x fem!reader.
warnings! mentions of sexual activities.
haseong was more than excited to take you to seoul for the first time! since it was going to be the first time, it was much more than special to him.
the first thing you both did after landing was head to his favorite korean barbecue restaurant. it was expected since he had been talking about it the entire time on the plane before arriving in korea.
“listen to me, you’re going to love this place.”
haseong would lean over and wipe the corner of your mouth like those scenes in kdramas which was super cringe but also cute at the same time.
taking you to the gyeongbokgung palace was the next thing he’d be super excited about. seeing you in traditional hanbok would make him think about what a beautiful bride you would be next to him.
“you look so pretty in hanbok baby.. should we get married next year? I think it’s a good idea, yeah?”
his phone would be full of pictures of you and him. even if you weren’t looking or aware of him taking the photo he would still take it and capture the moments of you enjoying yourself in his homeland.
although this was mainly about seoul, he would still find time to take you to his childhood town. seeing where he grew up and how he did was very important to you. it was a important piece of him.
myeongdong shopping street time! he would buy everything you looked at, especially the skincare products since that area is most known for that. he’ll buy masks just for you two to try together.
“I’ve tried this one! it feels so nice. let’s do it together tonight! that sounds so fun. doesn’t it?”
seeing the street lined up with food vendors excited him and you both. now you were able to try authentic korean food or snacks that he loved! at this time he’d pull out his phone to record you.
“what do you think? is it good? here look at me and the camera, you look so cute eating like that.”
seokchon lake park was the next destination and this time it was much more romantic. the park is famous for it’s cherry blossoms and surrounding skyscrapers with an amusement park nearby! so holding your hand or an arm around your waist pulling you close to him was a great feeling.
jjimjilbang (bathhouse) was next on his bucket list for a few reasons. one being relaxation with you and two.. being able to take you to the nearby pool room with just you two being there and nonchalantly asking you to misbehave with him.
yes.. I said misbehave with him. that’s exactly what he would say to you and it would embarrass you but at the same time it was haseong how could you say no to that handsome and pretty face of his?
haseong is into public sex I’ll just tell you that now. the thrill of being caught is always on his mind and especially in such a public place like a korean bathhouse. so he’ll want to purposely misbehave.
hotel balcony sex. he’ll get a room with you for one night just to have hotel sex in korea. it was definitely on his bucket list with you and he was thrilled when you agreed to do it with him.
asks you if it’s okay if you both act out kdrama scenes in places where they’ve filmed them before. is it embarrassing? yes but is it worth it? yes!
visiting night markets is a must with him before you both leave. he’ll want to wrap his arm around you and share a meal together, typically kimchi jjigae! which is his favorite meal that he loved to share with you. even if it wasn’t your favorite, it was okay and he would buy something you enjoyed.

Reminiscing about Korea and some of the fun stuff that happened:
1. A random lady gave me and my ex oranges while we were sitting on some steps outside one of the markets in Gyeongju
2. This
Tumblr media
3. The sunset in Jeju
Tumblr media Tumblr media
4. The fact that the pavement in Jeju city was made from lava stone in many places
5. Being in a tiny random village in Jeju finding a place to eat, no phone signal, stumbling into a sea food restaurant and trying to understand the menu cause it was full of names of things I never heard of. Using the few words in Korean I know and the few words in English one of the customers knew to explain to the owner what we're ordering. The party next to us with the customer who helped then bought us makgeolli and brought it to our table. On the way out I bought them soju and brought it to their table and I had never seen a more impressed group of men
6. How packed Itaewon was on a night out. The tragic crush happened just a couple of weeks after I had walked down the same street
7. How good the markets are
8. I will never get over how fucking good Korean BBQ is cause they give you so much and let you actually grill it yourself 🫠 The amount of extra food or free dishes thrown in in general. People want you to eat and eat well
9. Street DJs in Myeongdong
10. How cheap or even free so much of the historic landmarks, palaces and natural wonders are to get into

Volume 5 Part 1
Week 4
I definitely tried to fit as much as I could into this last week to ensure I didn’t leave Korea feeling like I missed something. It was a little tiring doing that and wrapping up classes with final projects, but I’m ready to come home.
To start off, Grace, Bianca, and I headed over to Itaewon on Sunday. To be honest, I wasn’t really sure what there was to do besides the club nightlife, but I thought that I can’t leave without paying at least one visit. The other two didn’t want to go to the famous street where the tragic crowd crushing incident occurred last Halloween so we ventured to the main streets and some smaller ones. We were feeling peckish after arrival so we went to a cafe that sold Western styled breakfast.
Tumblr media
I got berry compote french toast, Bianca got egg's Benedict, and Grace got banana walnut pancakes
They weren’t really good at serving us at the same time so I got my dish a good while after the others. Grace also eats faster than my boyfriend so it felt a little weird eating when she was almost done but that’s pretty much how it’s been when hanging out with her.
Grace is apparently a big Barbie fan, so much so that it’s been on her list of possible Halloween costumes for a couple of years now. It just so happens that there was a Barbie cafe in Itaewon so we tried going there. Unfortunately all the tables were full and we had to put down a number, but only Grace had a working number. We never got a call and it was probably because it was an American number or something.
Tumblr media
We went to a bingsu place instead to combat the heat though. Bianca and I shared this injeolmi flavored one. Injeolmi is basically a sweet rice cake covered in roasted soybean powder. I’m not sure how to really describe it, but the powder is dry and tastes nutty. I’m pretty sure it’s the same powder used on Japanese raindrop cakes.
Tumblr media
It was also raining that day so we kind of decided to head back. There wasn’t much that caught our attention in Itaewon, but it was nice to visit.
On Monday, our painting teacher made us paint outside. It was not the most ideal, but I ended up painting a view of campus.
Tumblr media
After class, the three of us headed back to Myeongdong to see the nightlife and street food market. I was pretty dead set on coming back with cash. Before we got into the vendors, we did some shopping and got dinner.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to get photos of the fruit mochi I bought, but it was seriously worth my money. It looked like this though.
Tumblr media
I also got this honeycomb and ice cream taiyaki. You’ve probably seen taiyaki before – it’s that fish-shaped cake. They served it with a small chunk of honeycomb and that was the first time I tried actual honeycomb which was cool. It was fun chewing on the wax.
Tumblr media
On Tuesday, Grace and I got to go to the Starfield COEX Mall for our visual journal field trip. It’s pretty awesome that we were able to go on so many field trips for that class and that we got to go to a mall of all places. The mall was absolutely enormous. There was only one floor for shops, but we literally kept getting lost because of its size. Other cool things were attached like this massive library, aquarium, and movie theater.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We sat down inside the mall for some food and got what was probably the most incorrect Indian food I’ve ever had. I say incorrect because the flavor was okay, but the execution and everything was wrong. I’m no Indian food expert, but I questioned a lot of the things. The drinks were wrong and had the wrong consistency, they used the wrong rice (we had to pay and it was such a small portion too) – things like that. I guess that’s what we get for trying to get Indian food inside of a mall in the middle of Korea.
Tumblr media
That night’s food made up for it though. One of the girls I hung out with after the Everland trip was turning 21. That same group went out for dinner to celebrate. We got kbbq in Hongdae because we all wanted to experience getting kbbq in Korea at least once. To be completely honest, it was a little pricey for the amount of food, but that was probably because of the fact that we had to share. I guess I’ve been spoiled by the kbbq buffets back home.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In case you couldn’t tell, bingsu is a big deal here. And of course we ended the night with some. We shared some new flavors: tiramisu and mango apple cheese.
Tumblr media
Wednesday was pretty uneventful. I had my painting final and we were given 2 hours to paint anything we wanted to, using the techniques we learned. It could be the plants we learned, something from Korea, or just anything we wanted. I painted the key parts of Korea for me which was basically Ewha’s ECC and all the field trips. I also included some flowers we learned.
Tumblr media
For dinner Grace and I went to this place called Witch’s Kitchen. It’s a witch themed restaurant with a vibe crossed between Halloween and Harry Potter. Some of the food options were decorated in a way that made it all more fun.
We were most excited for the drinks. I heard that they served them in blood bags and that they did. Each table had one of those liquid IV stands they give people at the hospital and filled them with our drinks. We got to control how much we wanted in our cups and it was really fun.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I spent the rest of the night working hard on my visual journal project. I made a pop up book of where I’ve gone to in Seoul, basically the same thing as my painting final. It was a little bit of a risk since I’d never made a pop up book before. Albeit a little simple, it was a lot of fun. There was this lady that came into one of my classes in the second semester of freshman year who taught us the most basic techniques of pop up book making and I’ve wanted to give it a try ever since.
Tumblr media
We had a mini exhibition within our class the next day and it was cool seeing what everyone else came up with.
Tumblr media
Later that day, Bianca and I went out to check out the Gwangjang market, a traditional street market with lots of street vendors and mini restaurants. It was still light out when we got there so we got this white peach bingsu while we waited for the sun to set.
Tumblr media
My friend Iris told me to go to Cheonggyecheon Stream which I’m pretty sure is the man-made stream my dad told me to check out as well. It stretched out for quite long. Here it is before the sunset.
Tumblr media
Once we got back to the market, it was definitely a lot more lively. There were four main paths that we looked at.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We were looking for one thing to eat and luckily many of the restaurants there sold it. I’m serious when I say don’t knock it till you try it because multiple of my friends expressed their disgust, but it was actually pretty good. I’ve wanted to try this for the longest time ever and have always seen mukbangers and foodies eat this.
For those who haven’t been to guess it, it’s raw squid. This is often confused with live squid. To be fair, people here do actually eat live squid, but the raw squid we had was just raw, NOT alive. It’s only called live squid because the tentacle nerves continue to move after being chopped up.
Anyways, it was doused in sesame oil which made it good for me. I’m not a seafood girlie and don’t even know why I liked it, but it was fun to eat. We also got bibimbap with beef tartare (also raw) which was also good. This day was all about trying traditional things so instead of getting a basic drink, I opted for Sikhye, a traditional Korean fermented rice drink. I kept seeing it on the street there so I decided to try it out. I noted how it looked like something my mom had always made and Bianca said that was because Korea always steals stuff from China.
We also ordered bindaetteok, a mung bean pancake with bean sprouts in it. It was very very good.
Tumblr media
We were quite full at the end of this so decided to get a snack that was truly authentic and worth it. I wanted Hotteok, a sweet filled pancake. My mom sometimes makes this for breakfast so it was cool to have it from the actual streets.
Tumblr media
The stream was really nice to look at and walk along once dark. We spent a little more time there before going back.

Ooh, no way?!
And agreed! We were staying right in the Myeongdong district with a view of both the night market and N. Seoul Tower from our room and the vibes were just top notch. I want to go back so badly!

Things to Do in Seoul
1.  Gyeongbokgung Palace
King Taejo built Gyeongbokgung Palace in 1395. It is the largest and most impressive of the five grand palaces constructed during the Joseon dynasty. There are over 300 buildings to explore, as well as The National Folk Museum and The National Palace Museum, which are must-sees for history buffs. Within the palace grounds, remnants of the Joseon Dynasty such as the Gyeonghoe-ru Pavilion, Hyangwonjeong Pond, and sculptures of Geunjeongjeon (The Royal Audience Chamber) remain relatively intact.
2. N Seoul Tower
N Seoul Tower, located on Namsan Mountain in central Seoul, is a modern structure. From its observatory, 237 meters above ground, you can enjoy panoramic views of Seoul. Inside, there's also a digital observatory and a plethora of souvenir shops, restaurants, and cafes.
Couples frequently attach padlocks and love notes to the fence on the first floor of N Seoul Tower as a symbol of love. Year-round, its outdoor stage hosts traditional performances and exhibitions.
3. Lotte World is number three.
Lotte World, located in central Seoul, is one of the largest indoor theme parks in the world. It caters to visitors of all ages with thrilling rides, films, an ice rink, lively parades, and laser shows. You can also visit the onsite folk museum, which features miniature villages and artifacts dating back over 5,000 years.
4. Market in Myeongdong
If you want to go shopping during your visit to Seoul, Myeongdong Market is the place to go. It is one of the most important shopping districts in South Korea, with dozens of department stores, shopping malls, and street-side shops. Popular items include low-cost clothing, shoes, accessories, jewelry, and handbags from both domestic and international brands. Over 1,000 stores sell Korean cosmetics and skincare.
5. Palace of Changdeok
Changdeokgung Palace is the best preserved of South Korea's five remaining royal palaces. It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997 and is located at the base of Mount Baegaksan's Ungbong Peak. A public palace area, a paved courtyard, open corridors, and the royal family's residence comprise the area. The Huwon Garden is one of the most photographed spots at Changdeokgung Palace. Views of a lily pond and elegant pavilions surrounded by colorful flowers are available.
Tumblr media
6.Temple of Bongeunsa
For those interested in learning about traditional Korean Buddhist practices, Bongeunsa Temple hosts cultural events. The atmosphere here is very quiet and tranquil, surrounded by lush greenery. The temple grounds are dotted with artifacts such as woodblock carvings of Buddhist sutras and Korea's tallest statue of Maitreya Buddha. Bongeunsa Temple offers temple stay programs that allow visitors to experience the life of a Buddhist monk. Among the many activities available during your visit are guided tours (in English, Japanese, and Chinese), dawn services, lotus lantern making, and tea ceremonies.
7. Shrine of Jongmyo
During the Joseon Dynasty, Jongmyo Shrine was a Confucian royal shrine for memorial services. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that houses the spirit tablets of the Joseon Dynasty's former kings and queens. Every year, cultural heritage festivals such as the Korean Royal Palace Culture Festival are held at Jongmyo Shrine.
8. Market at Dongdaemun
Dongdaemun Market is one of the largest wholesale and retail shopping districts in South Korea. It is home to approximately 26 shopping malls, 30,000 specialty shops, and 50,000 manufacturers. Textiles, clothing, shoes, and jewelry are among the items available, as are leather goods, toys, electronics, and office supplies. Mukja Golmok, an alley dedicated to Korean street food and snacks, draws foodies to Dongdaemun Market. After the sun sets in Seoul, the shopping district remains busy well into the night, with festivities, fashion shows, music and dance performances taking place.
9. Hanok Village in Bukchon
Bukchon Hanok Village is home to hundreds of hanok (traditional Korean homes) that have survived since the Joseon dynasty. It is regarded as Seoul's most beautiful historical district, with many of these structures serving as cultural centers, guesthouses, restaurants, and teahouses.
10. Mountain Bugaksan
Bugaksan Mountain, at over 340 meters above sea level, is Seoul's highest point. There are scenic trails that take you through the city's 15th-century gates and along ancient fortress walls, also known as Baekaksan. It takes about 2 hours to reach the top, where you will be rewarded with breathtaking views of Seoul, Gyeongbokgung Palace, and N Seoul Tower.

Tuesday March 19 / 2024
We went to MacDonald’s for breakfast. Then we took a train to Gwanghuimun Gate: one of the eight gates through the ancient city wall. We took some pictures and then walked through the Dongdaemun Design Plaza. It was a very beautiful, yet interesting building with subtle curves and a steel façade. It was a popular spot for young people who were interested in architecture.
We walked through the park, past the old water gate where the stream once passed through the wall, to Heunginjimun Gate, the easternmost gate, and walked up to the nearby City Wall Museum on the hill. The museum contained the 800 year history of the wall built to protect ancient Seoul. We continued walking along the city wall up to the mountain top and into Ihwa Mural Village, where murals are painted on the side of peoples houses. We walked through Naksan Park at the top of the mountain and down below the wall to reach Hyehwamun Gate. Simon took me to Starbucks coffee for a latte reward for a steep route.
Next, we took a train to Myeongdong Shopping Street. It was a very crowded street full of fancy stores. We entered Myeongdong Cathedral and sat through a Catholic mass. Three things distinguished this mass from others we have experienced. First, the women looked very elegant in their white lace vails. Some were had their traditional outfits on which added colour and class to the audience. Second, when the band played hymns, the audience swayed their hands back-and-forth in the air. Third, although we had no idea what the priest was saying in Korean for his sermon, we were impressed that the audience laughed half a dozen times.
Lastly, we walked through the Myeongdong Night Market and took lots of pictures, mostly of food, before we went to meet Simon’s friends at a vegan restaurant for dinner. In addition to some delicious beer, we enjoyed spicy vegetarian meals with all plant-based meat substitutes.

It’s happening, my friends, it’s really happening, I am going to Seoul!!! We couldn’t leave the third Kdrama musketeer behind, so Flat Lydia is joining us too!
Our hotel is in Myeongdong, and after a harrowing bus ride going 60mph in the streets of Seoul, we’re ready to go out and check out the city. Our first meal is at a Michelin star restaurant that just has four things on the menu, beef noodles three different ways and dumplings. We each ordered the original noodles and we were not disappointed. So much good food on this trip!
Next we walked to Deoksugung Palace, one of the “Five Grand Palaces” built during the Joseon Dynasty. Members of the Royal Family inhabited this palace until 1910, when the Japanese occupation of Korea began. Near the entrance is a really yummy waffle place that Kaari found.
We tried to find the famous Namdaemun Night Market first, but we got lost and no one else seemed to be around, so we went back to Myeongdong. There are lots of shops and restaurants there, and at night, the food stalls come out. Nom nom nom.
Legends will know the Kdrama sites in these photographs.

Hi, I’m Jewel! Let me share one of my dream destinations, which is South Korea. South Korea, also known as “SoKor,” is a very famous tourist destination. Aside from being the home country of numerous well-known Korean stars, South Korea also has many places for locals and tourists to enjoy. Myeongdong night market, Seoul and its famous Han River, Jeju Island, the coastal city of Busan, Gyeongju, and the list goes on. Each place has its own unique experience, view, and things to offer. It’s up to the traveler to choose from these destinations that align with what they want to do and experience while traveling in South Korea. For the travelers, they must be ready for the difficulties in communicating with the locals and understanding Korean text and signage, especially if they are not that familiar with the Korean language.
Tumblr media
Visiting South Korea may be a little bit expensive, especially if you compare the prices there and here in the Philippines. But there are also cheap rental places where you can stay while you are in South Korea; you just really have to be patient when looking for one. Before visiting the country, you must at least make yourself familiar with the destination you’re going to. It would be great to research very carefully the places you’re going to avoid being lost, taken advantage of, and meeting any inconveniences and incidents. You should always have a presence of mind especially if you are not yet familiar with the place that you are in. Yo.u must also prepare your itinerary ahead of time to maximize your visit to South Korea. Another thing that you need to remember is to budget your money and should also not exceed it as much as possible, especially if you have a limit, to avoid any monetary problems during your visit as it will be more expensive than in the Philippines.
Tumblr media
South Korea has been one of my dream destinations ever since, and even though I still haven’t had the chance to visit yet, I have already watched and read tons of travel vlogs and blogs about South Korea that have made me even more eager to visit. Although there are lots of cultural differences and the culture shock that you may feel may be a bit, if not very, overwhelming, the experience that you might get from visiting may overpower your worries.
By scrolling through some websites, I got a sample itinerary that you can follow if you plan on visiting South Korea.
Tumblr media
As for the accommodation that you will rent and stay with for the duration of your visit, you must always check the reviews available before checking in. When visiting new places, especially foreign countries, your top priority should always be your safety. So checking in previous customers’ reviews and experiences will help avoid any inconveniences of staying in a poorly rated accommodation. You may find recommendations from some vlogs and blogs, and you can look them up and read the reviews again to ensure your comfort and safety during your accommodation.
Tumblr media
There is a big wall of cultural differences in different countries; experiencing culture shock is very normal, especially if it is your first time visiting a place or country. So it is advisable to research your destination’s culture and customs to avoid encountering any problems due to cultural ignorance and to refrain yourself from offending other people, especially locals, unintentionally.
Tumblr media
Based on several travel videos that I have watched, the most common challenge that foreigners face while visiting other countries or places is communication. The language barrier makes communication much harder than it should be. Understanding each other is difficult not only for the tourist but also for the locals, who are also not familiar with the language that is being used in talking to them. Another is being lost; being unfamiliar with the place you are in is one problem, but not being familiar with transportation is another, especially if the transportation system in South Korea is very different from the Philippine transportation system.

I've been pretty MIA on this blog for the last few months, and now that things are starting to slow down--and this is, osetensibly, a blog--I figured I'd finally post about why!
I went to Japan! And South Korea! In July, my best friend and I finally set out on the trip we'd been talking about for over 20 years, starting in Tokyo and then migrating to an onsen in Hakone, then on to Kyoto and Osaka. We saw the floats for Gion Matsuri. My friend fell in love with shaved ice, and I ate so much my shorts grew tight. I had to stop myself from stuffing my suitcase full of pottery, and we drank so much white peach water I think I'm now going through withdrawls, and we accidentally found a view of Mount Fuji while walking along the coast in Kamakura. It was hot and exhausting and totally wonderful, although I've learned my lesson: invest in a transit pass.
Towards the end of the month we took an overnight ferry from Osaka to Busan, celebrating my friend's birthday with a feast at the night market near our hotel. We hiked around Jeju Island, gorging on citrus and pork, and then wound down wandering around the Myeongdong district of Seoul. Our hotel hosted rotating groups of Scouts, in town for the World Scout Jambouree; watching the colours of their neckerchiefs change every time you left the lobby felt like being in a David Lynch film.
It took me about a week to recover from this trip, but since then I've moved cities (again) and into a new house, which has meant non-stop packing and unpacking and renovation. I even forgot to post about the latest issue of Starburst Magazine--a Doctor Who issue--which you can find here. But now the reno is getting wrapped up (at least for now), and I finally feel like I have the mental capacity for our regularly scheduled programming. Prepare yourselves for some reblog spamming.
