Grian: Well, that's a lie. This isn't a task. I know it's not a task, I set the things up! Not sure why we're getting a question as pointless as this one, but sure, mysterious scroll, I'll answer. There's no such thing as curses, unless you're Timmy, in which case it's funny, yeah? Besides, I didn't actually kill Etho. Even if that did count, self-fulfilling prophecies aren't the same thing as curses, and I know which one I fall under.

Joel: Do I believe in bloody curses what kind of question is that? Do I really get hearts just for answering this? This feels like a prank or something... well, whatever. There are no such thing as curses, except the Boogeyman curse, which I sort of had today, but it wasn't actually the same at all. A lot of the bloodlust, sure, but a lot more... Etho had to be the one to do it, huh? And it's not the same. Not comforting. That's a stupid thing to say actually. Take it out of wherever you're putting this. Cut it out of the recording. Comforting. Please. As if it were ever... Yeah, I'm done actually. Don't have a good answer. Go away.

Scott: What, other than Jimmy? Bless that man, he may not have died first, but he sure tried his best. Sure, I'll believe Jimmy is cursed. I mean, mostly he's just kind of stupid. Lovingly so. I mean, despite him being stupid, I put up with him, right? That seems like a complete answer to this question. Jimmy's an omen but we put up with him anyway. That's all.

Mumbo: NO RESPONSE GIVEN.

Pearl: Oh, I mean, I'm probably cursed. That's what everyone liked to say at one point. I think... I mean, I think this time I have good friends, which is nice. They don't think I'm cursed. And it's not like I--I mean, it's surprisingly fun, acting cursed! And I am just acting. Acting scary, blowing up dance floors, all of that. And I don't really have to this time, so... Maybe I'm not cursed? And since it's acting, it's not real? This is a weird question.

Etho: Oh, man, that's a question. Um, do I have to answer? Because I feel like if I say no, that's really just asking for it, but if I say yes, I have to explain myself. Uh, I think I'm abstaining, unless the zombie thing from earlier counts. That was scary and I hated it. Curses are scary and I hate them in general, but apparently I'm good at them, if you ask everyone else. Um, it's not the only thing I find scary that apparently I'm good at.

Scar: Why, of course I believe in curses! Look at poor, poor... Timbert? Timmy? Jim? Gosh, sorry, I'm very tired right now. That's more proof of curses, by the way! That I'm tired. I've been tired straight since the desert, let me tell you what. And that, my friends, is a curse like no other. What a terrible beast, loneliness is. Wish me luck breaking it, because it's not happening this season!

Cleo: Oh, you mean the thing people like to blame instead of their own actions? Nah. My soulbond was kind of a curse, I guess, but even that's at least half just... bad people. Bad relationships. Good ones, too. We're all just doing what you can, you know? No script, no curses, no characters, just... Oh, I hope everything turns out tomorrow. Sorry, that's unrelated. It's just nicer to hope than to preemptively blame things on curses that don't exist.

Impulse: Well, I mean, I didn't until you just asked me that, but now I feel like I should. Wouldn't that be nice? Being cursed instead of just sort of unlovable? Sorry, no, that's mean to Gem. I shouldn't say that about Gem, she's been good this season. Super, super cursed, mind you, in the like, game mechanic sense? But she's been good, no backstabbing or inability to get love involved. Um, and I guess that's not fair to Bdubs, kind of, except it also totally is and I haven't forgiven him. So I guess if they ask I said I believed in curses, and that's why my life keeps circling clocks? Don't put any of that other stuff down, I'm trying to work on that.

Lizzie: NO RESPONSE GIVEN.

Gem: I was just cursed for a task, but that probably isn't what you're asking about, right? I'm new, so I don't know! A task is a concrete thing to believe in, like bloodshed or victory or fun and games. You don't have to believe in those to know they're real, either! They just are, whether you like it or not. I understand that much!

Tango: Gah, don't talk to me about... Deep breaths. Look, I don't care if it's a curse, or if it's just me being really bad, or what, I'm not going out pointlessly this time. Jimmy managed not to die first, I can manage to not go out to a stray arrow or my own bomb or a misstep this time, right? Is that so much to ask?

Skizz: Huh? Curses? I mean, I don't think so, and to be totally honest I think it's kind of mean the way people sometimes rag on people about them. Everyone's got so many good things about them! Why do people like to focus on the unfortunate luck, huh?

Bdubs: Hah! Curses! Let me tell you about curses. When I see curses, I eat them for breakfast. I don't got curses, I've got better things to do! I've got my buddies with the Mounders, and I've got-well, I'd say keeping Etho safe, but he's being weird at me again this season. Not that it matters. It never matters. Etho and I, we're... The point is, that doesn't matter anyway, because I have the Mounders, and they're the ones who matter here. And because I'm a strong, independent Bdubs, who doesn't need anyone but my bow and my perfect, flawless fighting prowess! Sorry, what was the question? I've been thinking so much lately that it's just sort of made everything else pop out of my head, so it's hard to keep track. I'm sure I answered it flawlessly, though.

Martyn: Of course there are curses. That's half the fun for you lot, isn't it? Putting your little curses on us and watching us rail against them. Bet you think it's real cute to ask us what we think of the things, too. "Oh, what do you think of curses," like we have any control over them. Please. If I had any control over curses, Jimmy--or, well, no, I guess that one was technically broken, wasn't it? Sure doesn't feel like it. Point is, curses are bad, and they're definitely real, and I hate you for them, got it?

BigB: Look, man, if you're trying to get me to write my character out for you, just say so! I won't tell anyone. We can come up with a hole thing about holes and red tasks and the Backrooms together! It'll be fun! After all, you probably don't know what kind of curse to say I have, right? Haha, just kidding. I have no idea what I'm talking about. Luckily, neither does anyone else, so I think that evens out between the lot of us.

Jimmy: NO RESPONSE GIVEN.

Fragment headcanons <3

For those who don't know, these are fragments:

Art credit: me ;)

They are caused by Watchers eating up a player's negative emotions and visualize as these cracks in the body.

Note: I'm going to slap all Double Life fragments onto the heart. It just makes sense. So this headcanon list will be for 3rd/Last/Limited unless there is a special difference (Grian + Pearl + Jimmy + Ren). Just so I don't have to write over the heart several times.

Grian

The only fragment he has stretches across the back of his hands from where he had to beat Scar to death in 3rd Life.

He keeps the Watchers off him for the rest of the series by bringing a silly and goofy vibe to the games though. They hate him so bad so they haven't given him any more fragments. They would rather just ignore him.

Scott

3rd Life fragment wraps around his head like a flower crown.

Last Life fragment hits him in the shoulder then another on the bottom of his foot, spreading inside his body like lightning. (Think Aang's scar from Avatar the Last Airbender)

Limited Life fragment on the left side of his back, giving him a fragment on both sides of his heart. This is due to how hard his heart would have been pounding every time he was hunted for sport.

Pearl

Last Life, Pearl is granted 6 lives and has a habit of using/giving those lives to help Scott, her closest ally. The fragment is small and over the heart.

Pearl's experience in Double Life with heartbreak was so intense, and since she already had a fragment over the heart, her fragment for that season ended up huge. The cracks over her heart are wide and bright. But the Watchers loved her so much they sent her back in even though she wasn't ready. Meaning she held onto her emotions for Tilly and had to be swapped out with Lizzie for an episode.

Limited Life fragment is placed between her eyes and above on her forehead. Like a third eye for being a nosey neighbour and watching.

Martyn (We actually get to see his fragments at the end of Lim Life.)

3rd Life fragment spreads down the cheek like tears for when he cried losing Ren.

Last Life, on the back. The backstabber was backstabbed. He was completely willing to betray Grian in order to get himself, Mumbo, Jimmy, and Impulse somewhere nicer. Somewhere safer. The end. Only for the Watchers to reveal that was never the case.

Limited Life, over the hand his weapon was held in in which he had to kill Scott twice with.

Jimmy

All of Jimmy's fragments spread across his back like canary wings.

Scar

3rd Life, spreads across his chest from where that first creeper blew him up. The first death. Seems rather fitting for the guy who can't keep his shirt on.

Last Life, through his mouth, built from all the lies he spoke.

Limited Life, matching placements with the Clockers on the right forearm like a family tattoo.

Joel

3rd Life, a few small cracks spread around like dog bites.

Last Life, one of the biggest fragments and spread through his entire body. For every kill he got, he got a matching crack as if he was the one who died. His insanity means he has axe, sword, arrow, explosion, and fall damage cracks because with each kill he got worse.

Limited Life, kind of hidden based on just how many cracks Joel has, but starts above his chest and out through the bottom of his foot. Another lightning scar.

Etho

3rd Life, cracks spread from his finger tips up from digging his hands in the dirt to plant dark oak saplings.

Last Life is hard to place a fragment. Because I know he would get one for never giving Bdubs one of his lives but I don't know where that would place on the body. Back of the head for not thinking? Over the heart for the ache of regret? I'm not sure.

Matching fragment with the Clockers but it's on the wrong arm (left).

Bdubs

Bdubs is similar to Grian to me in a case where he brings a very goofy mood to the series. So I want to say he doesn't have a fragment for 3rd Life. Like, he betrays Impulse with 0 remorse.

Last Life, on the back where Grian shot him. That was the moment he realized Etho didn't love him as much as he thought. Shot for doing what he asked and never receiving another life. Etho's name on the tip of his tongue as he dies alone.

Limited Life, Clocker fragment, right forearm.

BigB

3rd Life, similar to Etho, I'm not sure where to place this one. But I think BigB would have a fragment for loneliness. BigB spends a lot of time that season on his own. And it's not like other seasons with lonely characters. Last Life Joel + Scar, Double Life Pearl, etc etc, they all still sort of had someone. Like Joel and Scar still technically had each other + Pearl technically had Scott, Martyn, and Cleo. BigB is mostly just doing his own thing for a good portion of 3rd Life and doesn't join a team till late season.

Last Life, matching stab fragment with Cleo because his betrayal on her hurt just as badly for him.

Limited Life, matching third eye fragment with Pearl for being a nosey neighbour.

Impulse

It's so easy to betray this guy. Both 3rd and Limited Life fragments are on his back from being backstabbed by both Bdub and Martyn. Though, the one left by Bdubs in 3rd life is more prominent and fractured.

Impulse doesn't get a fragment for Last Life. He didn't do much this season and thankfully was able to avoid any huge heartbreak.

Skizz

I think... despite not being in Double Life, Skizz has a huge fragment over the heart. It's not massive like Pearl's despite all 3 fragments being there simply because Skizz is filled with so much love. Love for his teammates and love for even his enemies.

3rd Life, he dies for his nation. Rushing in because he's tired of his friend being pushed around. (I will also never be over how Skizz RAN to Dogwarts when he heard Martyn beheaded Ren. He thought Martyn had betrayed Ren and was ready to CATCH HANDS despite only being in golden armour.)

Last Life, even when team BEST kicks him out, he's sure to stop in the middle of his threats to tell Tango that he's on Skizz's good side. And even though he's mad at his team, when he dies, his ghost watches over them anyway. Being the only one to hear Bdub's final words.

Limited Life we of course got the affirmation station. And when his time was up, he let Etho kill him so his whole team could stay in the game just a little longer even if Skizz could have kept trying for another 20 minutes. He loves so much it kills him almost every time.

Tango

Fragment hidden in his hair for his rage (hot-headed).

For the most part, Tango goes under the radar for the Watcher. His deaths are anticlimactic and there's never enough drama for him. They only pay attention to him when he's angry and this neglect means he holds onto grudges and hosts a furious rage for most people who have hurt him the most. Bdubs constantly being the one to take his lives in Last Life and inflicting the first rage. Martyn just never being a positive presence for Tango's POV meaning he doesn't trust him one bit. Like. Tango is Martyn's most frequent victim with 4 kills.

Cleo

Another case where I'm unsure where to put it. I think Cleo would have a fragment from the stress she had to endure from stealing and hiding Pizza.

Last Life, Cleo gets a stag fragment on her back for being backstabbed by BigB. The thing that makes this fracture special is how it doesn't stay the same. The Watchers forgot to remove part of her negative feelings towards BigB after this betrayal. As the series goes on, this fragment gets bigger and bigger since Cleo never forgives BigB for this betrayal.

Limited Life, Clocker fragment, right forearm. Additionally, part of her Last Life fragment settles down thanks to her short swap with Gem.

Ren

A crack around the neck, fracturing from the back where Martyn beheaded him. Similar to Scar's explosion fragment being important because he's the first death of the series, I think this fragment is also significant since it's the first PvP kill. The first weapon drawn.

Like Skizz, Ren is also a lover. Filled with love, loyalty, and dedication to the people he cares about. His heart fracture spreads across his heart for the same reasons. He would lay his life on the line for his allies. And I think BigB leaving him for Grian broke him so much inside he couldn't return to Limited Life.

Lizzie

She wasn't built for this series. Wasn't built to be killed in cold blood by her soulmate Joel and his red life insanities. But she was healthy enough to be brought because just a little to stand in for Pearl.

Mumbo

He also wasn't built for this series. They snapped him in half bro. Being killed by Grian was too much.

we haven't touched on season 8 too much, have we? I think there's a lot of funny moments to be had from this season. because boatem. mumbo, impulse, and pearl. they definitely have bets in the betting pool, and you know they're going to be trying whatever they can

from pearl locking grian and scar in the g-train. to mumbo asking both grian and scar to join him on a picnic only to back out last second. to impulse making one of those cheesy "boat of love" trips in the chocolate river in his factory for them

these guys are pulling out whatever stops they can to get grian and scar together. and I think it's boatem that finally makes our married couple realize what their friends are trying to do. they don't get away with it for very long

cue scar meeting with impulse and just. starting to wax poetry about how wonderful grian is, and how much he loves him (impulse is sick of it /affectionate). cue grian moping around mumbo's base because he misses scar (he'll see him in a few hours) and he can't just tell scar he misses him (this one is true, because scar would tease him for days if he knew)

bonus points for scar bothering cub about his "grian situation" and grian bugging pearl about his "scar situation" (both are So done with their respective siblings)

impulse calls an emergency meeting. boatem is empty. grian and scar get an entertaining date night

the hat scar made for grian? has an engraving on the inside that says forever and always, light of my life. grian makes scar backup gear that's extremely mushy and scar solemnly swears to never lose it (he has it stored away in his ender chest)

the pranks!!!! pranks a plenty!!!! scar gives grian a run around over where he's building his mountain (they both know scar is going to choose his spot). scar getting stuck in bedrock is absolutely Layered with flirting upon flirting. they die in the void together, holding each other because grian tried to catch him

grian officially renames the magical menagerie to magical bebegarie for forever (once again, scar claims the charged creeper is their child now. grian is exasperated)

they pick up a habit of star gazing together in midnight alley, and have definitely fallen asleep together before. scar's started to keep a blanket up there when that happens

speaking of blankets... he's missing a few. and some of his shirts are missing. and huh, would you look at that, scar's found them in grian's nest. How Odd

though grian loves sleeping in the swaggon, it's unfair how comfortable scar's beds always are! and boy do the other members of boatem go crazy when they see grian leaving scar's base in the morning. and upon being questioned, grian and scar always say that they stayed up doing blueprints of builds together. which isn't technically a lie, sometimes. but most of the time it's a lot more... hands on ;3

and oh my god the ravager prank from big eye crew... I'm not saying grian and scar try to keep each other in their sights the entire time, but I'm definitely saying grian and scar keep each other in their sights. and after the ravagers are taken care of, they're hiding away in grian's base and cuddling for the next few hours, Do Not Disturb

also this extends far past season 8 but scar often wakes up with jellie curled on grian instead of him. he declares grian is feeding her extra treats so she'll love him more. grian denies this, but scar doesn't believe him

The expansive, seemingly infinite crater of the perimeter makes for some nice eye candy, Grian thinks.

He's sure Doc would object to that characterisation. That is, if Doc were present and able to read Grian's thoughts. But for now at least, the buttercup camp is occupied only by its rightful owners: Grian, Mumbo and Scar. The three of them are sitting on a soft pastel picnic blanket. Grian is in the middle, with his wings wrapped comfortably around the two other men.

It's a rare peaceful moment between the trio. He doesn't mean to disturb that peace but the mental image of a god-like, omnipotent, omnipresent Docm77 is too powerful not to provoke some kind of reaction.

He giggles and his attempts to stifle that giggling only serve to worsen the situation: pretty soon he's full on laughing and there's nothing he can do to stop himself.

To his left, Scar groans "Griaaan. I was nearly about to fall asleep and you just woke me up! What's so funny, huh mister?"

Grian rolls his eyes at Scars dramatics, not intending to give an answer but then Mumbo pipes up "Yes. I'm also curious to know what's got you in hysterics."

"Well… I was just thinkin'.... wouldn't it be funny if Doc was like… an all seeing mind reader?"

"Funny?!?" Scar shouts "Grian, that's terrifying!"

"Hey, in my defense it isn't real! Doc can't actually read anyone's mind."

"I mean…mind reader Doc could be real." Mumbo hums.

"What do you mean he could be real?!? Oh, if you two keep up with all this crazy talk I'll never get to sleep!"

"It's not crazy talk." Mumbo says "Think about it: Grumbot prime came from a different universe, what if that means there's a whole multiverse out there? It wouldn't be so much of a stretch to say that Doc could be a mind reader in at least one of them."

"Mumbo, that's horrible." Scar whines, burying his face in Grian's feathers.

"I don't think it's horrible. If Mumbo is right and there is a whole multiverse that means there's a universe where there's…I don't know…infante theme parks?"

"Or a world of infinite Jellies! That would be so cute! Okay, maybe the multiverse isn't so bad. Wait! Do you think there's a world where we're pirates?"

"You were a pirate," Mumbo points out "back in season six."

"I had a pirate base. But I wasn't living the pirate life. I didn't do enough pillaging and plundering."

Now that's a scary thought. Scar, sailing the seven seas and robbing anyone and everyone he comes into contact with—Grian has no doubt that pirate Scar would be a force to be reckoned with. He can imagine it clearly.

"Maybe there is a world where you're a pirate." Grian muses.

"Oh I don't doubt it! Say, Grian, Mumbo, what would your ideal universes look like?"

Mumbo puts his hand to his chin "I'm not sure. Mine would probably be something silly. Like a world where the rules of gravity are mailable or where there's more redstone parts to play with or where I have crazy unrealistic superpowers."

"Mumbo, in my eyes your redstone making abilities are a superpower."Mumbo laughs, flushing red at the compliment. "I'm not sure if it's a superpower—" he turns to Grian "Err—what about you? What's your ideal universe?"

Grian looks up towards the sky as he ponders the question. He tries to imagine something better than what he has now but his mind draws a blank.

Really, he has everything he could need; seemingly endless building supplies, time and space to work on his various projects, the freedom to do what he'd like, friends who love him and are willing to put up with his constant pranks. Some nice eye candy.

Grian shifts his gaze back to Scar and Mumbo.

"You know, I think I'm living in it."

Ive been designing some hermits during my finals! Some headcanons and rambling under the cut

Gem is a satyr, fey of seelie court. She really wants you to thinks shes an elf, she says shes an elf, she does not look like an elf but I would not argue with her. Leaves on her antlers change with the seasons and somewhat mirror her mood, if shes sad for a long time they will start to wilt etc

Pearl is... Pearl. There are a lot of different versions of all the hermits, different universes, theres only one Pearl. She has some strong shapeshifter abilities and likes showing them off when possible. Her and Grian are basically siblings and especially like to use their shapeshifting abilities to fuck with people, especially by swapping places.

Impulse is a demon, imp in particular. Him and Tango have known each other for a loooong time, Tango would sometimes summon him to have someone to play with and Impulse got attached. Does not posses that many special abilities and his friends love to summon him at random times to annoy him. You can make some angst out of this!

Mumbo is... Mumbo but not in a way Pearl is Pearl. Pearl knows full well what she is, she will just not tell you or what she tells you will vary depending on her mood, Mumbo meanwhile HAS NO CLUE WHATS GOING ON He suddenly gained shapeshifter abilities in s8, ha may be a vampire, he should have died a long time ago from all the redstone he consumed. Grian started a poll on what he is and the most popular answer rn is "what happens when you get raised by the hermits"

Scar is a vex, unseelie fey (the same with Cub). He uses both a walking cane/staff and a wheelchar, depends on the day hes having. He generally uses his vex abilities more often than Cub but since he doesn't have a summoner and uses his powers so often its weaker than Cubs. Some people would say his charisma is thanks to his vex magic but hes just like that. His magic mostly manifests as illusions, especially on himself. Does this mean all of boatem except for Impulse can change their appearance? Yes. Have they used it to fuck with the whole server?

Also yes

Grian is mostly a watcher, he got away from them before they could finish his training tho. Most of my headcanons about him and the void stuff on Pearl and Impulse can be found here

He had some hang ups about his abilities until he discovered he could use them for evil (being the local menace). As thanks for all the help he got from Mumbo he gave him one of his fethers. Given that theyre not really feathers but rather void it changes with Grians use of his abilities, mostly by switching colors to match Grians wings. His s9 wings are based on a red-rumped swallow

A guide for people wanting to get into Hermitcraft (from a person who has been here since season 6)

Watch season 8 first since it is nice a short. Short to see if you like it and watch one of the shorter povs

I suggest the following for season 8:

Pearl- She has a nice short pov and is new to Hermitcraft in season 8. You are experiencing it with her. Pearl is also Australian and as an Aussie myself I may be bias

Gem- She also has a short pov like Pearl. Also being new to Hermitcraft that season so you are experiencing it with her

Grian- He is a classic but shut up. It will be pure chaos just a warning. I first watched Hermitcraft with his pov in season 6. It was a lovely starting point

Iskall- He has a fun shared base with Etho and a messaging wall with signs. But his pov is really fun to watch and just makes me happy

Next watch season 7. It is lengthy but is the most Hermitcraft season of Hermitcraft. Also the plot lines. I have only watched Grain’s full pov of this but shush

I suggest watching the following:

Grian- He started a war and stole doors the entire season, what else do you want. Also maybe a bit bias since I watched him but yeahhhh

Etho- He just spends his time playing decked out. Then randomly mentions a server wide war he is apart of and slaps on a 20 second clip about it at the end of an episode

Scar- He has an awesome pov for the war that happened. Also the most baffled about the doors but has happy vibes

Mumbo- He has no clue what is happening but it is so funny. Also he is the guy that made Grain steal doors the entire season

Then watch season 9. Even though I made you watch all these seasons to get to the current season because I am so nice

I would suggest to watch these people, it was hard to decide:

Pearl- She is a cleaning lady that joins a war aginst the monarchy and loves soup. Also she has a trash store, literally. I may be bias on this

Zedaph- He is just simply so funny to watch. He doesn’t know much about what is going on and his only goals are to finish the Zedvancements and annoy Tango

Tango- He lives in a cave, I mean decked out. Fun pov if you love techy stuff and also has no clue what is happening

woooo hermit horrors week! excited for this one :D

Day One - Season 8/Game Mechanics

cw mind control, temporary character death

Zedaph has never really had a hard time talking anyone into doing something for him. He’s a very persuasive kind of guy, when it comes down to it, and of course the other hermits are always so very helpful, so it doesn’t take much to convince them into whatever scheme he’s cooked up lately.

This really comes in helpful for this season, especially now that his chamber is ready for live hermit experimentation. His first subject is Tango, and it’s an easy job getting him into the chamber— just a little word in his ear, a mere suggestion, really (and a directive to sign the waiver, before they begin), and they’re ready to go. Tango is always so willing to help him out with these science experiments, it’s really very kind of him. It’s one of the reasons why they’re such good friends.

He has to be careful when the subject is actually in the chamber, though— he doesn’t want to taint the experiment. Each solution to the task set before them has to come from the subject’s own pure brain, without any hints or nudges from him. But Zedaph has lots of experience, and the push-to-talk intercom system certainly helps him be a little more deliberate when he speaks.

He gets lots of interesting results from Tango, and sends him on his way with a casual Go ahead and toss yourself in the lava there, sending him up to the bed to respawn and exit.

It’s a few weeks before the chamber is properly reset and cleaned out, and by that time Zedaph has landed on Bdoubleo as the next subject. Bdubs is not as used to helping Zedaph in the lab as Tango is, but a few choice words set him on the right track, and by the end of the session, he is performing marvelously. The results are absolutely incomprehensible, but the process was so very fun that he sends Bdubs off with a suggestion planted in his mind— Just something to think about, but— come back to the lab sometime soon. For some follow-up tests, of course.

Bdubs says he definitely will. Zedaph is very happy that Bdoubleo has discovered such an interest in science. He checks the “willing to return” box on the subject information sheet.

The next subject is Beef, and Beef is such a character in of himself that Zedaph doesn’t even really need to tell him what to do— he’s content to observe through the soundproof glass as Beef goes through the various tasks he’s set. Mumbo, too, is highly independent— though he looks awfully tired, Zedaph notices, marking it down as a note on his clipboard. There’s a certain sluggishness to Mumbo’s movements, and it’s dragging out the series of tests. Zedaph clicks on the mic. “Er, Mumbo? Go ahead and pick up the pace a little bit.” Mumbo speeds up, limbs moving jerkily as they try to keep up with his suddenly galvanized mind. The rest of the tests go by at a much faster tempo, and Zedaph is satisfied with the results. He also marks down a strange and only-just-suppressed urge toward violence from Mumbo, despite the man’s commitment to— what was it again?— right, “Peace, Love, and Plants.”

It’s been a while since the last hermit experiment now, though. For one thing, he hasn’t decided on a new subject. He’s been thinking of giving Xisuma a call and asking him to come over, out of pure curiosity, but it’s not urgent. For another thing, the seismograph has been going absolutely mad lately— there’s been tremors all over the server, with no discernible cause whatever. If this keeps up, Zedaph’s going to have to go out and do some actual field work.

He shudders at the thought.

A rapidly pulsing red light blinks on at the top left of the security monitor screen, just a moment before the proximity alarm goes off. Zedaph whirls around and gets a split-second look at Mumbo looming over him like a bespoke string bean before Bdubs tackles him at the waist and he hits his head on the tile floor. The next few moments come through in dizzy flashes: lab lights, far too bright for suddenly sensitive eyes—being picked up and carried, his head throbbing with each step—an uncomfortable heat radiating near his arm, but he can’t muster the words to tell it to go away.

His stomach suddenly drops and for a moment he flails through empty air before landing with a sickening crunch on the dull white floor. He’s not in instant respawn territory yet, but he’s close, and his kidnappers seem to know this, because he hears shattering glass quite near him, and then comes the bubbly, prickly feeling on his skin that only happens with splash regen and healing potions.

His headache clears after a moment, and he’s able to get to his feet. “Oh, goodness me,” he says, upon realizing where he is.

Tango, Bdubs, Beef, and Mumbo all stand on the other side of the tinted glass, wearing lab coats and looking somewhat vindictive. Mumbo’s got a clipboard and pen.

“This is highly unusual,” Zedaph says, crossing his arms over his chest. “There’s procedures for these things, you know. Standards and that.”

Tango steps over to the desk and keys the intercom. “Hey, Zed, ol’ buddy. I know you’re probably a little confused, here. Let’s just say we didn’t, uh— didn’t appreciate being your little lab experiments very much, my friend.”

“Informed consent is a big part of the scientific process!” Mumbo says, looking up from the clipboard, clearly unaware of the hypocrisy of his statement. The bags under his eyes have grown even deeper since Zedaph last saw him.

“You signed the waiver when I asked,” says Zedaph, but of course they can’t hear him. They take turns putting him through his paces, making him do— well, frankly, they’re quite silly things. He has much better things to be doing with his day. If he could just talk to them—

“Make a contraption that will blow something up,” says Bdubs, and Zedaph sees his chance. He intentionally builds it just a little too close to the glass— not so close that Tango and Mumbo will be able to realize what he’s doing right away, but close enough that the blast has a chance of damaging the barrier.

The TNT, when it goes off, leaves his ears ringing and all his nerves buzzing. But as the smoke clears, Zedaph spots a block of glass up near the corner that has shattered, and he giggles. Perfect!

“Bdoubleo,” he calls, and Bdubs turns to look at him suddenly. “Come in the chamber!” Bdubs immediately pulls out his pick and smashes through the nearest two blocks of glass beside him. He steps through the jagged hole and then pauses, looking confused.

“What was that?”

“This is all really very funny,” Zedaph says to the other three “scientists,” and replaces the glass that Bdubs broke, leaving the hole up at the top. The alarm melts off their faces, and they begin to laugh at Bdubs’ predicament.

“Mumbo,” says Zedaph, and now Mumbo snaps to attention, meeting his gaze through the glass. “I think for the next test, you should have me do something you’ve really, really wanted to do this season but can’t.”

Beef and Tango break out into another round of chuckles.

“Now hold on a minute,” says Bdubs, looking around, panicked.

“Well,” says Mumbo slowly, lowering his clipboard and taking a step closer to the glass. Zedaph nods encouragingly. “I would like you to… describe… how you would go about killing Bdoubleo using only things in this chamber—”

“Hey!” Bdubs screams.

“—and then do it and tell me how good it feels,” Mumbo finishes, all in one breath. Tango lets out a surprised wheeze of laughter, and Beef is wiping tears of mirth from his eyes.

“‘Course,” says Zedaph brightly. “Have to do what I’m told in here, don’t I?”

“No, no, no,” Bdubs says, backing away.

“Come on, Bdubs,” Zedaph coaxes. “Hop up on this dirt block here and stay put.” Bdubs’s face goes slack and he does as Zedaph asks. “Great! Well, Mumbo, the first thing I would do is get him in prime killing position, like so.” He gestures up to where Bdubs is standing, now looking around wildly. Mumbo nods enthusiastically, taking notes down on his clipboard. “And then I would place— er—” He goes digging through the scattered chests in the chamber to find what he’s looking for.

Oh, perfect.

“I would place some obsidian,” he says, triumphantly, sticking the block down next to Bdubs.

“No, no— no, wait,” Bdubs says, desperation clear in his voice.

“You’re killing me, man,” Tango says breathlessly, clutching his ribs. Zedaph tips an invisible hat in his direction and sends him off in gales of laughter again.

“Yes, yes, go on,” Mumbo says impatiently, pen tapping against his clipboard.

“And then I would place one of these,” Zedaph says, pulling the end crystal out of his inventory and setting it hovering over the obsidian base. He swears he sees Mumbo’s eyes light up.

“Go on, then,” Mumbo says, leaning forward eagerly.

“If you say so,” Zedaph says, and detonates the crystal.

It kills him as well as Bdubs, of course, but that only sends him back to his actual bed, and out of the range of the other would-be scientists. That had turned into rather a fun little tangent, actually.

It probably went without saying that none of them would want to come back to the lab, though.

Well. He’d just have to ask.

I wouldn't consider myself a analysist, because I'm not big brained nor have good enough memory for that; but like (and this may be my bias speaking) double life changed life!Pearl so much in the way it just amplified her already existing traits. She's very sheep in a wolf's clothing to me especially after dl made her even more disenchanted with the inherent isolation of later life sessions (what w/ being forced into that by day one of dl, immediately distrusted at a level only just barely below reds themselves). Like I could be getting the characterazation completely wrong, as I don't remember the seasons very well, but Pearl's playstyle very much feels like she's just capitalizing on her "hidden" chaos, being the kindest ally but also down to be unhinged when the moment calls for it, losing that kindness so fast in double life from being rejected and never getting it back nearly as strong as before. I feel like life!Pearl has gotten so use to the games and Watcher schennagins at this point that she just leans hard into the premise and her innate chaos <2 (can you tell she's my favourite character lol /silly)

Post-DL!Pearl I love her especially! Do I think she’s even more chaotic than she was in DL? No but for sure DL changed her like Whwhwh permanently she’s my fave winner bc of how prevalent that development is, to make those choices on her terms - not bc the game tells her to. Her POVs are very refreshing bc -in compare to everyone else- she’s so relaxed (bc she’s won before), and she makes it clear she’s not here to win (she already has)- she wants to have fun and uplift her friends :]

Her around ppl that aren’t her teammates is… a wildcard- but the trust in her allies is unshakeable. she reminds me of a mentor figure to them she wants what’s best for the team…. I don’t like the way ppl have been undermining the Mounders this season bc they aren’t attached at the hip 24/7, to Pearl they mean a lot to her SHE chose them and vice versa. so much that they’ll mutually go do things behind the other’s back that would help them survive in the long run and she trusts them with her LIFE. This especially between Pearl and Bdubs and their allyship makes me so delirious evrrytime she brings him up I’m getting Nosy Neighbours deja vu :[

That part in SL Session 6 when Pearl, her dogs, and Bdubs hid in the skeleton farm away from the Wither/Warden fight, and when a red name (Martyn) found them- I wonder if she was ever scared the game would take Bdubs too like it did to BigB last season… I mean it already took Mumbo.

Take it slow

Scar and Mumbo were supposed to meet up for a tour of Scar land. Scar falls asleep in Mumbos living room, conversation ensues.

(Second fic wooo!! Threw in my own headcanons about Hermitcraft and how the world works, as well as backstories for Mumbo and Scar. I’m a maladaptive daydreamer so I’ve been daydreaming about these guy’s backstories for years and years. Scars backstory used to be different but then Hotguy happened and I became obsessed, anyways have fun reading!)

Mumbos base always look different in each season, but one thing stays the same. The yellow kitchen and brown red-ish living room.

Scar‘s never asked about it, but now, being sat in the old rocking chair, watching the grandfather clock tick on, he can’t help but wonder.

It’s not even that there are variations of these two rooms, as in, they change even just slightly over the seasons. He hasn’t payed a whole bunch attention to it until now, but from what he’s seen and from what he remembers visiting Mumbos base and witnessing these specific rooms in the past, they’re exactly the same! Like a carbon copy!

His eyelids fluttered, oh he was getting real sleepy.

He was supposed to be waiting for Mumbo to meet him, so that Scar could show him around Scarland! He’s only been in the room for probably less than five minutes, granted, but it was feeling like an eternity! Not that Mumbos late or anything.

His limbs started to feel heavy, as did his eyelids. Maybe he could simply rest them? The grandfather clock ticked on, and the cozy chair slowly but surely rocked him to sleep.

The builder dreamt of lands far gone. A city long lost. A life, long lived. He dreamt of his steady bow, and zooming across the city, hopping from building to building. Feeling the fresh wind breeze in his hair, feeling the adrenaline in his body as he fought off villains and creeps, Scar was happy. Then, a faint glow, in the sky, and- Scar? Scar?

„Scar?“ a cold hand shook the mans shoulder gently. He slowly opened his eyes. „Huh?“ the once mayor rubbed his eyes, seemingly confused. „What are you doing here? I thought we’d meet up at Scarland?“

Scar breathed, and took in his surroundings. Unlit fireplace, old furniture, big grandfather clock, stuffy bookshelves stacked with literature.

„Right-„ Scar sat up, did he really fall asleep? He looked up at Mumbo. „How long was I out?“ Mumbo wiggled his mustache, „I’m not sure? I was about to go to Scarland when I found you here, so- depends on how long you’ve been here, I suppose?“ „right,“ Scar lifted his arms, taking a longgggg stretch.

„Geez Mumbo, how do you do anything in this room? It made me fall asleep in- minutes! Probably!“ The redstoner giggled. „You get used to the atmosphere after a while,“

Mumbo sat down on the old sofa beside the chair. „So, off to Scarland?“

Scar groaned, leaning back in the chair. „Let me wake up first,“ he snickered, loving the mans interest in Scarland. Of course he’d be interested in Scarland, it’s amazing! He’s toured so many hermits around already, and yet, Mumbo finding the place interesting felt all the more special to him. He couldn’t place why.

Mumbo nodded, folding his cold dead hands in his lap.

Scar looked around, his gaze catching onto a coat hanger with a fancy looking top hat on it.

„Say, Mumbo,“ Scar began, and the taller man looked at him. „How come you always have these rooms in your base? The kitchen and living room, I mean.“

The expression Mumbos face shifted into was one Scar couldn’t read, but it resembled suprise? Something else was there.

„Oh- why do you ask?“ He crossed his legs, leaning his elbows on one knee, his hands still folded, now resting under his chin.

„Pure curiosity, I suppose,“ Scar laughed nervously. He already regretted asking.

Mumbo puckered his lips, looking around the room himself. Looking at the ugly wallpaper, looking at the small box above the fireplace, holding precious memories.

„Sentiment,“ Mumbo began, „Just- something I’d like to keep from before Hermitcraft.“

The air smelled old, the dust in the air comforting.

„Oh- I’m sorry for asking Mumbo, really-„ Mumbo cut him off, „It’s fine, it’s fine. It’s not taboo to talk about, I’m not sure why most hermits treat it as such.“

The builder looked at the redstoner, and he supposed, he was right.

When he died, when he separated from his old life as a hero, when he joined Hermitcraft, he felt that strong urge to keep his past hidden. To not let anyone know. Which felt strange, he’s usually an open book! Did the other Hermits feel the same? What were their life’s like before?

Scar looked around the antique room. What was Mumbos life like?

Scar took his chances, „What was.. what was it like? If you don’t mind me asking,“ the redstoner smiled. „Another day, Scar“

Scar bit his lip, he drove too far once again- he was supposed to feel bad, but with the way Mumbo was smiling at him, how comfortable he looked, how comfortable he himself felt, it conveyed the message, that it was all fine. That Scar wasn’t a jerk for asking. That Mumbo just wasn’t in the mood. That they’ll discuss it another day.

The builder smiled. „Awake enough yet?“ Mumbo asked, slowly getting up from his spot on the sofa.

Scar blinked, „not quite.“

Mumbo breathed, content. „Mh, would some music wake you up then?“ Music? Scar wondered, „maybe,“ he grinned at the taller.

Mumbos smile grew in a way where you could only see it in his eyes. Joy pinching at the corners of them, lifting themselves ever so slightly, crinkling so beautifully in a way that made Scar want to cry, Mumbo was so beautiful.

What did he just think?

The redstoner walked over to an old radio, leaning down to twist the buttons. „Does that thing still work?“ Scar asked, leaning up in the chair, ignoring his silly thoughts. „Very much so! The audio is a bit crunchy, but it still broadcasts the songs as if it was actually connected to a station!“

Scar watched the mans hands. „Is it connected to a station?“ „Not quite, I don’t think. It’s more so frozen in time, it just plays the songs and broadcasts from- well from the day I departed from it.“ Scars nose scrunched up, he felt bad for the man. The builder lifted himself up from the comfy chair with his arms, slowly approaching the taller. „What kind of songs does it have?“

Mumbo grinned as the radio sprung to life, playing a- as promised,- crunchy tune. „The best,“ you could start to hear a man singing, vocalists in the background. Something about love and New York City. „Have you ever been to New York?“ Scar asked, and the Redstoner turned to face him. „Not quite, no. Have you?“ „I lived there,“ the music was nice. „Oh! What was it like? Is it really the city where dreams come true?“ Scar snickered. „Not really. If you want your dreams to come true you don’t need to visit a city for it,“ „Well that depends on the dream then, doesn’t it?“ „I suppose,“

Mumbo was quiet for a second, watching the radio. A hint of blush dusted the mans cheeks, Scar raveled in the sight. „Would a dance wake you up?“ Mumbo almost whispered, though it came out more like a mutter.

Oh he was adorable. Scar took the mans hand gently. „What dance are we thinking?“

Short moments later, Scars hand was on Mumbos waist and he was holding his hand at shoulder level. Mumbo also held his hand, and the other one of his hands was holding the builders shoulder. They moved slowly to the soft tunes of the radio, the crackling became comforting.

„You were talking about a new addition to Scarland?“ Mumbo said in a slightly higher voice than he’s used to, his blush having deepened, just slightly more than the previous dust of it. The brunette loved how dark it was, as if Mumbos blood is darker than his own. Was it? „Oh- yes! I finally finished Adventure Land! With the- volcano cloud smoke and and bambooo-„ he drawled slightly, still lost in the sauce watching Mumbos face, specifically the slow spread of the deep red.

„Oh really? When’d that happen? It was like- last week where you told me you’d finally started building it up?“ „oh I finished it like two days ago,“ Scar laughed quietly, his own face heating up. He doesn’t remember ever being this close to Mumbo, let alone touch him for more than a few seconds! Or moments, he doesn’t really know the difference. „It was fun, oh I can’t wait to show you. The park in general- have you seen the trolleys?“ Mumbo snickered, „Yes, I’ve seen the trolleys Scar,“ he smiled, and Scar stepped on the mans foot by accident. „Ouch-„ „Sorry!“ Mumbo didn’t mind.

The song slowly came to an end, and another started up. A more upbeat tune, but still fitting to slow dance to. The distance between the two Hermits became less. Mumbos hand was now holding the back of Scars shoulder.

„What do you think I’d especially like?“ The taller smiled, wanting to hear the mans thoughts. „Hmm,“ Scars thought for a while, holding the man close. „I think you’d like the castle the most, though I’m not sure,“ „The castle is impressive,“ „you think so?“ „I know so,“

They fell into a comfortable silence, just holding each other and moving slowly. Swaying, almost.

Scar laid his head on Mumbos chest, „you’re good at slow dancing,“ The builder has already stepped on the taller man’s feet multiple times, having apologized for each. The redstoner always laughed quietly in response. „I’ve had much practice,“ „oh?“ „I used to do it a lot with Benjamin“ „who?“ „an old friend, from back then.“ „oh- is he-?“ Mumbo shook his head, „it’s fine,“ he said.

The hours passed, and they talked about random things quietly, Mumbo resting his chin on the smallers head.

Eventually, the raven haired man remembered something. „Hey,“ „mh?“ „are you awake enough yet?“

Thoughts While Watching Gilmore Girls, Season 2, Episode 21- Lorelai’s Graduation Day, Aka Lovesick Stepcousins In The Big City, Part 3

I'm cheering Rory on as she leaves school grounds, leaving these 35 year old classmates in the dust, and as she manages to pull it off under the eyes of two teachers or administrators. Yes yes yes! Well from here on out it's going to be pure Literati appreciation with only minimal anger and rage, you know, my usual shtick. That being said, when that happens I start to sound a little disjointed, like, this episode is so pure and precious and enjoyable that I really don't have much snarky commentary on it and I can just watch it. What am I without my snark powers?

Destiny awaits. In one of many examples of what I call "Gilmore Girls Poor"*, which is a term I coined myself for how AmyShermanPalladino views lower/middle class/urban/city life, Rory manages to end up in the Port Authority Bus Terminal in another dimension. The Alternate Dimension, 100% white, Spotlessly Clean, Nearly People-Free New York City Bus Terminal where she stared down a scary dude without being stabbed and she was offered a locker to store her book bag. (*More examples of GGP: In season 4, Jess is 19 years old, a high school dropout, and is living in a clean, rat and roach free, enormous New York City apartment with working utiltiies and large windows that in today's housing crisis people would murder him to get, he just needed a bed frame and to pick his shit up off the floor but we are supposed to believe its a crack den; Rory and Lorelai live in a beautiful home and eat take out and restaurant food every day on nothing more than an innkeeper's slary)

This was cute. Rory the little mouse getting ignored by city folk. I love it so much.

I think AmyShermanPalladino inserted this smoking guy to make it look like Rory was in a rough part of town. Someone finally gives our little mouse an abrupt answer on how to get to Washington Square Park where she can meet her stepcousin and her destiny.

The little smirk before he turns around! And then, and then...and then...the big grin when he sees her!

I am STARVING for stepcousins!!!!!! ..And the Emmy Award for the whitest words ever spoken on teleivison goes to Alexis Bledel, as Rory Gilmore in Gilmore Girls:

Baring his naked forearms like a saucy strumpet. Book sticking awkwardly out of his back pocket. He either finds the smallest books or has the roomiest ass pockets that he keeps pulling that off. How does he do that?

This is all so precious and pure I could die.

He is RAPT with attention listening to her silly stories. Show me where Dean or Logan ever paid this much attention to her telling one of these stories.

We know, Bubs. We know :(

Red alert! Red alert! Our first display of physical contact!

Jess says he eats from this hot dog cart every day. Let's unpack this: 1) Holy child neglect, Batman! I mean, Liz Danes. You can't even make your kid a peanut butter and jelly sandwich once in a while? This boy is feral. These are survival hot dogs. This may be all he can afford to eat on his own. 2) How are you still as skinny as a rail? 3) How's your blood pressure? 4) Where are you getting the money?

This sweet bubba unquestionably paid for Rory's lunch like a true gentleman.

I refuse to acknolwedge any sort of Behind the Scenes Hollywood mumbo jumbo like "Milo wasn't ACTUALLY eating the hot dog" or “umm, it’s a prop hot dog”. i am firmly committed to a scenario where everyone on the set for this episode was like "Milo our precious vegetarian baby boy we will get you a tofu hot dog to eat"

if you have reduced mumbo to grian's emotional rock, you are writing mumbo wrong. mumbo CAN be the one who is acting as the emotional rock, but in the sense of. anyone who is close friends with another person can be. he's not a well-put-together, emotionally intelligent man, though. (i mean. okay IRL mumbo is probably a pretty well-put-together man from what i understand but you know what i'm trying to say.)

further point deductions if either mumbo's sole characteristic is "grian comforter" or "grian comforter about scar", a late-joining addition to my list of grievances.

also further point deductions if you write the grian/mumbo/scar trio but have put absolutely no thought whatsoever into how scar and mumbo interact.

(the above three items incidentally are often the ones that end up problems in the specific kind of watcher angst fic i find hard to read.)

mumbo is not responsible. he will, however, be appropriately flustered and concerned about irresponsible actions. this is not the same as being responsible, and his SCALE for what is or isn't irresponsible and should be worried about is wildly out-of-tune.

mumbo will also retaliate but he will be so wet and floppy about it. he gives as good as he gets he's just also pathetic about it the whole time. do you understand me.

mumbo is a guy who really, really wants his world to fall into order. this is not the same as being a stick in the mud or something - i am going to gesture at everything mumbo does in season eight, actually, as a really good example of "mumbo wants his world to be ordered but he doesn't necessarily mean for it to follow the same rules as everyone else, it's just ordered by his own internal rules". literally everything mumbo does about the potato situation and also the moon situation falls into this. another good example is the whole hobbit thing during hcbbs i think.

oftentimes, mumbo's attempts to maintain an ordered world that makes sense to him makes the world much more nonsensical, both to himself and everyone else. this then has a tendency to spiral.

also, mumbo is, in fact, smart. like, he's also a spoon, but he IS smart, and people lose that sometimes a bit, i think. (or lean too hard into 'smart redstone guy' and then make him the responsible adult for some reason.)

..........when i write mumbo he normally also comes out autistic gonna be honest here. this is at least 50% projection but is also somehow vital to characterizing him in a way i like, i think.

honestly the stuff about "mumbo wants an ordered world but is also a very chaotic person" and the autism beam are probably the most singularly "i am pretty sure these are just me" things and also i'm never good at explaining characterizations i like in plain language but something like this,

Skill issue honestly.

There are so many POVs to watch if you get tired of one POV. You don't have to stick to someone out of obligation; feel free to stop watching / take a break if it doesn't interest you. People change over time. There are so many hermits and so many different styles. It's okay to bounce around. Be free. That is what I did. It's not an insult to the hermit or their content; sometimes it just happens. (But don't go bitching about in their comments.)

I think the clout trio is genuinely hilarious and they have great chemistry (I was there for HC7 Hobbit starter bases!), but I also saw Boatem 2.0 coming from a MILE away (and once we learned the new hermits I KNEW it was going to happen). I was like, yeah, this season hasn't even started and I know what's going to be the fandom focus. I can see it now. (And the skewing somehow more extreme than I expected.)

I think Iskall would be a great watch for tired clout trio fans. Iskall's mantra this season is "keeping it real" and he's been doing a lot of awesome and entertaining collabs with a huge variety of people. I love putting Vodskall vids on and listen to the hermits banter. Iskall's on to spend time with his friends, and after his burnout from previous seasons, I'm so happy to see him thriving.

Anyways I think we are so getting Boatem 2.0 and the subsequent Boatemification. I can only hope the "neighbourhood" shapes up to become a fair competitor fanon-wise (this won't happen) (I'm once again delusional) (actually it's probably better if Boatemification doesn't happen). Ren's Minister stuff is shaping up to King Ren arc 2.0 minus Bdubs, which one could argue it's stale and samey, but he has been connecting a group of hermits and giving them stuff to do, while he simultaneously props himself up as a potential villain (once again). I could talk more about how Ren's storytelling skills shine in a big group, but yeah. At least we're getting proper infrastructure 🔥 I love roads 🔥

since I started liking/posting stuff related to the funny boomer Minecraft Youtubers playing an improv death game, I'm probably gonna post more opinion or lore posts occasionally when I have time; the Life Series is like one of my pet obsessions I circle back to every time a new season comes up like most people.

(to my friends/other followers who have no idea what I'm talking about, I'm sorry)

I don't usually watch the main Hermitcraft/other SMP videos because they aren't my thing compared to the Life Series SMPs, but I do enjoy what the creators put out and they all deserve lots of praise for the hard work they've put in (especially after a lot of unwarranted criticism lately over Secret Life + Hermitcraft Season 9)

and now for a scorching hot take that will disappoint a lot of fans

I really like the Desert Duo...but only platonically, and lemme tell you "platonic" and "Hermitcraft/Life Series fanart" go together about as well as water and oil

I'm already not a fan of shipping in general as a personal taste, but when it comes to shipping real content creators, my discomfort is doubled. If you ship them I'm not gonna hate on you or ask you to stop, you're free to do as you like and I'm not the internet police.

That being said, Grian and Scar are super close friends iRL (if you include Mumbo, I consider them a "DO NOT SEPARATE" trio) and it's honestly really heartwarming to see them in other series just goofing around and even doing RL meet-ups (mostly Grian/Mumbo). To me I've always loved seeing really close friendships like these, and I will try to refrain from snarking about how people on the internet are really bad at distinguishing Philia love (friendship, really deep friendship) from Eros (romantic love).

The point is, I kinda feel uncomfortable when I see shipping of them cuz it feels like willfully misinterpreting the bond of actual real people. I know a lot of people say "separate the CCs from their personas in the series/lore," and I understand why, but the whole practice doesn't sit well with me. It almost feels like instead of creating something actually derivative of the real people, it's like smooching two dolls that just happen to be labelled "Grian" and "Scar". And as a writer myself for other things, I really like to pay respect to the subject matter I'm writing about, and that includes real people. And considering Grian iRL is a straight married man who's said before he doesn't really like the shipping (Scar to my knowledge has not given his opinion on it), it feels even more uncomfy to me when people try to ship him with one of his actual close best friends.

Yes in a way the real people are separate from the personas they put in Hermitcraft or the Life Series. They're like actors, doing it for the job and the sake of us the audience. (Considering I'm a big fan of Vtubers, I'm very acquainted with this paradox) Even still I can't help but always be cognizant of how they're still real people trying to put out their heart and soul to the public, and we enjoy what they do with deep respect for what they're doing. Shipping, especially if they've voiced their disapproval for it (even though they haven't banned it), feels just a tinge not respecting them as actual people, and feels a bit parasocial-y.

But again these are just my personal feelings, this is NOT a hate/call-out post to anyone in the fandom or demanding anyone to stop shipping the hermits. That being said you're likely to not get any out of me for the reasons I've stated above.

and a side note to talk about lore specifically, I just think platonic Desert Duo (for the Life Series specifically) is even more interesting than taking the romantic lens, because we can still have the angst and the doomed narrative and the unsaid trust between Grian and Scar, and still be able to celebrate each of them individually as respective players/creators, without having to make every achievement they make be about 'oooo because fate'

I haven't seen anyone yet posit the theory that (CHARACTER) Grian has distanced himself from (CHARACTER) Scar not because of just trauma but also that Grian thinks Scar is perfectly capable of holding on his own (shenanigans and carelessness aside). Like he's known Scar long enough to trust that he can survive on his own, and thinks that they should try to not hold each other back, and depending on who you ask this was either a really good or REALLY REALLY BAD CALL in Secret Life (because Scar did win on his own merits, but was left all alone)
