Happy #National POTATO Day!
By Miriam Kleiman, Public Affairs
"POTATO PETE" GOES TO WAR!
Years before #MrPotatoHead, Potato Pete helped the Allies fight the Nazis! Not sure which gov't communicator associated potatoes with military strength, but this series of wartime posters - including Airborne spuds -- promoted potatoes as "fighting food" at a time of food scarcity.
NARA ID 44266921.
NARA ID 44266923.
Before “Freedom Fries” -“POTATRIOTS”!
Potatoes helped in World War I, as well! U.S. citizens were encouraged to eat more potatoes while wheat was being sent to the soldiers overseas.
Iowa potatoes are "the Newest Fighting Corps." NARA ID 283501.

A selection of strange items from a second hand shop the other day.
1 - Scary potato head man that my mother described as the 'stuff of nightmares'
2 - I think he was a hat. He was scarier in real life
3 - Incredible pig toast rack that I definitely would have bought if it was cheaper and/or I had the space for it
4 - Intense Thomas
5 - Ballerina doll. When you wound a key music played and the doll turned and danced. I was going to get a video but a man was watching me 😅
6 - I don't know why her eyes are like that
7 - 2012 olympic plush and strange looking Winnie the Pooh (there was also loads of other 2012 olympic stuff here that I didn't get pictures of)
8 - Incredible toad that was unfortunately a tenner and very, very, heavy for its size
9 - Amazing balloon dog robot toy my mum bought me. When you turn it on it barks and wiggles

Buzz: You see, being a space ranger takes three things: hard work, perseverance, and... (thinks for a second) Hard work.
Mr. Potato Head: You said "hard work" twice!
Buzz: That's because it takes twice as much work as perseverance!
