Movie Rec Ask Game
2, 6, 13, 22, 29
2. an indie film.
You know, I'm actually pretty late to the indie film genre. It wasn't until my mom got a Netflix account that I started watching more "indie" films -- mostly just non-major studio movies sometimes with no-name or up-and-coming stars and often LGBTQIA-themed. A couple of my fave indie movies are Weekend -- which is actually the movie that inspired my WinterFrost fic Stay With Me; Boy Meets Girl -- which was one of the first movies I saw with a transgender actor playing a transgender role (and also stars Michael Welch from Twilight); Redwoods -- which was the idea behind my FrostIron fic Empire State of Mind; and ofc, My Big Fat Greek Wedding!
6. a film released before 1970.
Ok, well, three of my favorite movies of all time were made in 1934, 1939, and 1944. (That's Gone with the Wind, It Happened One Night, and Double Indemnity). I grew up watching my mom's favorite musicals of the 1950s and 60s. My mom liked to show me, especially, all of her favorite films from her childhood.
13. a film whose main genre is drama.
OMG where do i start tho? Drama (next to action) is one of my fave genres. I'm a total nut for an Oscar bait movie and up until a few years ago, I used to watch every single movie nominated in the Big 6 awards (Acting categories, Directing, and Film) and my mom and I used to print out ballots and compete. IDK, google best dramas of all time and I probably have watched and love them all.
22. a film that is a novel/film adaptation.
One of my fave films, like it's in my Top 5 movies, is Atonement. And even though it's not the happiest of films (it's downright tragic, really), what I love the most is how close to the book it stayed. They even pulled dialogue directly from the book (not all adaptations do this). My nerdy ass even did a presentation for my Narrative in Literature and Film on the movie.
29. a film to feel good/uplifted.
uhh,,,,idk cuz my sister and i will literally watch disaster movies when we're in a good mood. lol like we watch the Day After Tomorrow, San Andreas, and 2012 on the regular bc they're out comfort movies.
Thanks for asking!

23 for the movie ask game!
23. a film that is a box office flop
After looking at a list of 50 Great Movies That Bombed at the Box Office, well, first off, I'm surprised by some of the movies on here that bombed - I mean, Fight Club???? I don't see how that bombed, but hey, whatever. Great movie, lots of people hating on it these days because of dudebros and women who spend a lot of their time smacking down dudebros instead of focusing on what they love. Seriously, whatever. And I do rec that movie, btw. I love it. Maybe deep down somewhere in my bones, I've got a little dudebro in me since that's what they seem to think is the only demographic to actually love the movie. But I'm gonna Big Rec some of the movies on here:
Shawshank Redemption The Big Lebowski Mulholland Drive (WHY IS THIS A BOMB????) The Fountain - Okay, maybe Hugh Jackman should usually stick to comedy and Logan and not as much esoteric stuff, but he was really fucking good in this, and if you're not watching it because it bombed at the box office, you're missing out. Sunshine - Look at this cast! This is a great movie. Destroyer????? Alright, it's not a GREAT movie, but Sebastian Stan really is pretty in it.
Okay, two I'm gonna recommend big big time - it pains me that they're on this list.
“The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford”
Why would you dis a whole entire movie that's got Sam Rockwell making this cute scrunchy face?
Tumblr media
And excuse me but Only Lovers Left Alive bombed???? None of the vampires sparkle, they weren't badly written by a fucking Mormon, and come on -
Tumblr media
Thanks for the ask!

For that movie rec ask game, #1, #8, #21. Hope you're having a good day! 😊
Hi there! I'm having a pretty good day, actually, so thank you! I hope that you're having a good day/night wherever you are 💖
A film from the IMDB Top 250: I just checked the list and holy shit, there's so many fantastic movies on there! If I had to pick one that doesn't get praised enough (in my opinion lol), it's #76-Amadeus. This movie is historical-fiction at its finest, following a fictitious and almost one-sided rivalry between Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Antonio Salieri. It explores the ideas of genius and mediocrity, and how far a person would be willing to go to achieve greatness and immortality. My mom introduced me to this movie as a kid, and it's been one of my favorite biopics ever since lol if you don't mind historical-inaccuracy for the sake of art and an annoying high-pitched laugh, then you'll absolutely love it!
8. A film from the year you were born: I never realized how many great movies came out in 1996! Muppet Treasure Island, The Birdcage, Dragonheart, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Matilda, The First Wives Club, Romeo+Juliet, and Scream are all fantastic, but the one that I really wanna highlight is That Thing You Do! or as I like to call it, the best movie about a fictitious one-hit wonder band. First of all, this movie wouldn't work without the perfect, most catchy title song ever (props to songwriter Adam Schlesigner) and without the cast's insane chemistry. It's charming, plain and simple, and it always manages to put me in a good mood whenever I put it on!
21. A film with a great needle drop/soundtrack/score: The other two movies I talked about could absolutely fit this bill, but I'm gonna go ahead and pick The Blues Brothers. This soundtrack...is insane! It's filled with songs sung by John Belushi, Dan Aykroyd, Ray Charles, James Brown, Aretha Franklin, and Cab Calloway, and that's just the official soundtrack; the film soundtrack includes songs sung by Fenton Robinson, Elmore James, Sam & Dave, Otis Redding, Louis Jordan, John Lee Hooker, and Fats Domino. It's a love letter to Blues/Blues Rock, R&B and Soul music, and it's such a great soundtrack to listen to while you're driving (but be warned, it might make you wanna drive through a mall and get into a high-speed chase with the cops, a Country Western band and the Illinois Nazis lol).

Hello my dear ♥️ for the movie Ask - 5 and 18 maybe ? ;)
Hello darling ^^
5. An animated film
Seen my fair share of those thanks to my studies haha! One that I think isn't too famous and that I particularly liked was Wolfwalkers by Tomm Moore and Ross Stewart.
(I actually had the chance to attend a talk by Tomm Moore 2 years ago where he showed some of his first concept sketches for the movie, it was great!)
18. A film whose main genre is Historical
I based myself on the Letterboxd order of genres to determine whether Historical was the main genre of a film or not. I ended up with only a handful and I can't decide between 2 movies so have them both: Marie Antoinette by Sofia Coppola and 1917 by Sam Mendes.
I like them for vastly different reasons so it seems unfair to pick haha

🍰 & 🧠 for the Fic Ask.
Wishing you a splendid day!
Yay, thanks for the ask for this ask game!
🍰 Name one of your fave comfort fics (doesn’t have to be your all time fave).
The Play's the Thing by @ernmark gives me all the best emotions. Garashir fake dating and mutual pining, my beloveds!! The way they both played themselves so hard, the absolute fools! <3 Every time I even remember this fic exists, I immediately go reread at least one chapter of it so that I can feel warmed to my core!
🧠 What’s an idea you have that you can’t quite call a WIP yet?
Ohhh this is a tricky one, because due to my patented writing workflow process (that is to say, due to the adhd) I need to start on turning an Idea into a WIP as quickly as possible before the motivation and inspiration leaves me, at which point work on a WIP becomes much much slower lol... But a WIP is at least something I can chip away at, unlike a blank document for a still nebulous idea that I've lost the initial spark of inspiration for.
OH, okay, wait, I thought of one: I promised @bashir-my-beloved-my-beloved a Morn/Garak fic, but I have not yet put any words on paper lmao, nor do I know exactly what it will entail. It's probably gonna be a PWP though, or else what's the point?

Favorite thing you’ve written and want to share?
Favorite childhood movie?
Fav writing:
For the shortest amount of time I was on tindr and one of my “photos” was an image I created that said “I’m just a gal fieri looking for her guy”. A lot of layers to several jokes all smashed together.
Childhood movie:
I had a delay answering this because I was asking my family if they could remember the timeframe to give my answer context. Only my brother answered and he said “it felt like eons”.
But for 6-24 months (my best estimate) I would only watch one of three movies:
Willow
The Witches
White Wolves: A Cry in the Wild II
I think it might just be coincidence that they all started with a W. Though it could be the autism? Whom knows. Not I. I don’t even know how long I did this particular adventure.
But I have actually rewatched Witches several times so that is going to be my ultimate answer!

I think I need to take a break from Liminal Bird-Dogs (eek) and do some novel writing (exciting!) because I’m reevaluating my whole life rn and I think taking a break from screenwriting will distract me, and maybe help my semi-writer’s block?)
What are some of your favourite fantasy tropes/concepts in world building/characters/creatures or whatever! Please tell me why you love fantasy!! <3
Also maybe some fantasy recommendations? (shows, movies, video games, books, podcasts, etc!)

12 for movie rec game!
12. A film that's main genre is horror/thriller
Ahh I love horror! 3 of my current favs are
Saw X (2023), I enjoyed a lot of the saw franchise but I think this definitely enhances some of the best aspects of the earlier ones
The Lighthouse (2019), kinda a weird artsy thriller but I love weird shit. The homoerotic nature of the film and the references to the myth of prometheus are very interesting to me
Teeth (2007), the vagina dentata movie. It'sthe lowest quality movie here, it was made earlier and had a lower budget than the first 2. It doesn't execute all of it's ideas/concepts in the best way but it's definitely very interesting and fun at moments and an intriguing look at how purity culture affects girls

12, 20, 21?
12. a film whose main genre is Horror/Thriller
The Taking of Deborah Logan. Also Mercy. Look, both of these have serious cheesy moments. What horror movie doesn't, especially these days when it's so hard to find a really good horror movie that doesn't just rely on CGI wall-climbing demon-possessed tricks or jump scares? But if you've ever known someone with dementia or taken care of someone with dementia/Alzheimer's, these two movies will scare you right out of your skin. The first one gets kinda BAD at the end when it becomes less about the horrors of dementia + possession and about showing off with a CGI demon/monster, and that sucks, but through the rest of the movie, you're getting what a person with dementia is like from one second to the next. Calm, coherent, and then WHAM. Stranger, someone who doesn't know you, someone who becomes suspicious of you and who behaves erratically to the point that they seem like a whole different person. I speak from experience after taking care of my aunt with Alzheimer's. In fact, the one and only time I watched The Taking of Deborah Logan, I was living with my sister and former roommate and my aunt who we were taking care of. The movie scared me, of course, but a lot of why it did was because I saw my aunt in that, and it made it so much more real in dealing with her.
Mercy has similar themes but less about dementia exactly (but it does, I guess?) and just about what happens to the elderly when their bodies and minds break down and what it makes them behave like and susceptible to (possession). Big recommend, and they're both on free streaming formats still, I believe.
20. a film where the vibes are immaculate
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Seems like a strange choice for immaculate vibes (I'm assuming that this wasn't asking for religious vibes or knowing my friends who know me and one of my stranger kinks - priestly, though I could recommend sexy priest movies, too, I suppose), but the vibes ARE immaculate (aka "perfectly clean, neat, tidy" and "free from flaws or mistakes"). You go into that movie knowing it's going to be a fucked up, drugged out ride, and you get every single vibe that goes along with that (so I'm told). But you have this whole movie full of frenetic freaky energy, ridiculous lines that make you laugh and commit them to memory word for word and use them constantly in memes to express yourself - the whole damn movie -
but for this scene, this scene that steps outside of the wild ride to remind you that Hunter S. Thompson was more than trippy literature. That Hunter S. Thompson brings you home to his point in a moment of sober poetic reflection that always stays with me even longer than the drug humor:
youtube
This is immaculate vibes right here.
21. a film with a great needle drop/soundtrack/score
There are so many. SO MANY. But I think my rec for this one's gonna be Velvet Goldmine.
I mean -

hey hunni bun! just got a random q for ya 🤗 i'm trying to watch more movies i've never seen before this year -- have you watched anything that was new to you that you recommend?? ❤️
hi!! great question, i’ll list some recommended movies below that i watched and loved. 🫶🏻
1. Pearl (2022)
2. Barbarian (2022)
3. Oppenheimer (2023)
4. Haunted Mansion (2023)
5. The Pope’s Exorcist (2023)
Honorable mention: I watched my first Studio Ghibli movie last year, Spirited Away, which led me down a rabbit hole of only watching his movies for about a month straight. Hence my username + my name Bell lol. So if you haven’t seen that one, that’s a must in my eyes!
I just realized these are almost all horror except 2 😭 I’m a big fan of horror. My fave on this list is definitely Oppenheimer, I saw it in theatre’s not expecting to like it (I’m not in to science-y stuff…) but it was absolutely amazing. Everyone on that cast list was fantastic, no L’s were seen that day.
Anyways, if you watch any of these, let me know if you like any! 🫶🏻

Anybody know any good stories based around animatronics that are not fan media of/are a part of FNaF?
Don't get me wrong, FNaF is really fun and some people have done great things with the existing lore and designs, but I wish there were more animatronic-centric stories that weren't all set in Utah.
Like... I've seen some cool AUs, but if it's all FNaF-inspired, it's going to come back to the central topics of "wouldn't it be gross if there were bodies in the robots" and "what if there was a serial killer who was also someone's dad." These are fine topics, I'm fond of them, actually, but I would like a little more diversity in robot-story plots.
I'm just looking for stories that have aniamtronics in them because I like analyzing how they'd go together in real life + how I'd build them, and I'm running out of FNaf characters to spin around in my brain. There can't only be one franchise with some spooky performing robots, right? Have they taken over everything and consumed all the smaller ones?
I saw a youtube series with original animatronics once, but it's been on hiatus for ages.
Anyway. I've got a hyperfixation on animatronic design and it's dragged me into a Wild-West-style fandom, and I need a smaller fan space that isn't exploding after a new movie got released, with more fans like myself, where I can just vibe.
If I can't find one, I'm just inventing my own.
(While we're on the topic, if anyone knows any old-film-styled horrors that aren't Bendy or that Mickey Mouse creepypasta, I'd like those, too. I like the idea of it more than the actual gameplay, and old film horror can be really well-done if done right, but Bendy just... doesn't scratch the itch.)
(Oh yeah, and I need more trans-allegory body horror, too.)
