Loddlenaut: a cozy clean up that leaves the bigger questions behind

PC,
With a chill, and I daresay--cozy--atmosphere, Loddlenaut offers exactly the kind of laid back routine that’s easy to dip into for small moments of satisfaction. Taking the role of an ocean sanitation worker, there’s an immediate satisfaction to clearing the junk and gunk in the area, which builds towards the long term goal of creating a clear, inhabitable biome. Loddles, the native lifeform of the planet, provide a light pet raising element, not unlike Sonic Adventure’s Chao Gardens.
Alongside the cute, slightly aliased aesthetic, and some light survival game elements, Loddlenaut kept me plenty engaged and doesn’t overstay its welcome, with plenty smaller goals for those looking for more. Yet it's those same cozy elements, and the vague gestures toward an environmental message that Loddlenaut struggles to square away.
Tumblr media
Loddlenaut follows a familiar structure, starting you out with limited capabilities, clearing areas to reveal the next, and in the process gaining access to new materials and faster, more efficient abilities. Intentional or not, this turns the world into a “frontier”, where wildlife and environmental resources become stepping stones to greater control over the space.
Loddlenaut attempts to sidestep these issues by focusing on restoring an environment that was already previously inhabited, cleaning up the mess left by a careless corporation that exploited the planet’s resources. Materials are simply reclaimed from debris left behind, and it’s restoring the habitats of the plant and animal life that provides resources, not harvesting them. But it’s difficult to throw off the underlying motivations that drive its progression.
Tumblr media
Systems like fast travel emphasize this struggle, only allowing you to quickly travel between areas after you’ve cleared them, and consequently, reclaimed all their materials. The framing is slightly different, but functionally it feels no different to clearing all the objectives in an open world game. The feeling is exasperated in the late game, where the amount of trash increases, and the limited inventory pushes against your ability to make steady progress. The goal quickly became gathering materials to ease the tedium, and more than a few times I considered jettisoning trash back into the area instead of lugging it back to base, so I could clear more of an area before making a return trip. (Dropped trash doesn’t count against an area’s completion). I ultimately didn’t, but looking at the forums it seems that I wasn’t the only one with that idea.
The story gestures towards larger environmental concerns, but never resolves. Your operator makes repeated comments about the massive damage done by the corporation that’s hired you for cleanup, but reassures you that it’s not your job to question your actions, only clean up after them. The delivery had me almost sure that there’d be a turn somewhere near the end, but Loddlenaut concludes with a simple “nature is healing”, creating an unintentional downer ending as I left knowing the underlying problem creating the pollution hadn’t been dealt with.
Tumblr media
The team’s intentions seem more to imply that the work is not yet done, to avoid a simple easy solution, and inspire further action, but it leaves so many underlying assumptions unchallenged in an attempt for a feel good ending. I walked away feeling less like my character had made a meaningful contribution, but instead was doomed to be a janitor for the messes of a corporation who would continue to move to new worlds and leave the same problems behind.
I ended up returning to Loddlenaut after the ending, wanting to clear up the areas that had become polluted again in my absence, and to check up and name the Loddles that I hadn’t had time for as I barrelled through the last areas. The little creatures remained cute as ever, but I couldn’t help notice the eerie stillness of the planet. Without the pollution cluttering up the landscape, it had the vibe of an aquarium. An isolated space to raise pets, with sunken structures to add visual variety.
Tumblr media
The thing is, as an aquarium, it’s easy to find joy in. At the end of the day I do love to feed and raise my pets, and clean the gunk out of their tank. Loddlenaut is just that, a playground for your pets that I enjoyed, that gestures at the bigger questions without any answers for them.

Once again, I am playing around with their design, but not too much tho
Just added a jacket and some glasses and changed the hair and eye color. Also!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[Note: They did not die at the age depicted in the image [late 160s] they died much, much earlier than that.]
Some time ago I mentioned doing a recolor of their alt design and here it is! I wanted them to have a more "natural" fur/feather color bc his species evolved to be that way to survive on the mortal plane.
[oh btw I need to make a post on this but basically originally some thousands of years ago his species came from an afterlife-like plane of existence where the dead, reapers and other "life" natural to it reside. They came to this plane to experience life and after a couple generations and conflicts with humans, Nyx, Orion and their parents are the only ones left [to their knowledge]].
As for the eye change and the text in the image, I wanted his eyes to match up with Kathrine's and Tomás', with them being blue or blue-ish and all. His eyes are naturally gray.
Also, not too long from now I'm going to show a new concept for Tomás' mask in his Hunter design. I have some reasons as to why but I'll explain that then.

Idea for an au (one-shot) mermay fic I am working on!
Okay so for context I am a Peter Pan fanatic and every year or so I fall into the book pretty deeply. So I thought it would be fun to do a mermay au that revolves around the actual story of Peter Pan.
Sun and Moon are mermaids that live in mermaid lagoon while reader is one of the lost children. Now mermaids in the lagoon always avoid the lost children. They dash away as soon as they come close, but they will talk with Peter (but Peter is not human really). So, I was wondering what could happen that would allow the mermaid Sun to get close with the human child? Perhaps he was caught in a net left by the pirates and the young kid saves him.
After which reader frees him and he dashes away into the depths of the lagoon, but he begins to take notice of the child, watching them to make sure they are safe in the lagoon and such. But he does not come near as that is not in his nature.
Now Moon does not approve of Sun watching over the child. He knows the rules of the Neverland, but one day when Sun is resting, he sees the child fall into the water and struggle against the tide. Moon begrudgingly helps them onto a rock before hurrying away again. At this point both mermaids are now watching the child to make sure they don’t drown in mermaids lagoon.
But one night, at the turn of the moon, when the lagoon is at its darkest, the mermaids change. They wail and cry for the moon and are more monstrous. There are rules that you don’t go to the lagoon at night without Peter. And no one, not even Peter, goes to the lagoon on the new moon. But maybe Peter forgot to tell this news to their newest lost child. He would have for sure. He forgets a lot of things.
Reader likes the lagoon. It is always nice to rest there and they are aware of the two mermaids that watch them. They hardly come too close unless they are in danger. They decide to go to the lagoon one day that Peter is gone away to the mainland and it happens to be on the night of the new moon.
They are sitting on the rocks when the sun sets over Neverland. They have never seen such a lovely sunset. But then everything gets dark and cold. The world seems to feel more dangerous. Nervously they get up to leave when the wailing of the mermaids begin.
Reader hurriedly scrambles to leave the lagoon but are grabbed by the mermaids who drag them into the water. They struggle as the mermaids bite and attack before the two mermaids they know, dark as the others fall into a frenzy on the mermaids grasping them.
Sun and moon then take reader, difficultly, to an underwater cave biting and snapping at each other all the way. They are rough with young reader but they can’t help it. The moon is gone on this night and they are not the same.
They get reader to a safe rock, or a place they can climb away to wait out the night while Moon and Sun claw at each other. They try to then attack at reader as the clouds cover the stars and reader is fearful through the night.
As daybreak rises the mermaids have fallen silent and reader, exhausted from the night, sees both Sun and Moon watching them with worried looks. Sun is the first to reach up to them, sees them flinch but he continues to reach and gently he pulls the child to him. He worries over the bruises and cuts given to them. Moon frets as well, but doesn’t come too close. He watches from a safe distance. Sun cradles reader close and Moon begins to sing so that reader can rest after the night.
Reader does fall asleep and Sun and Moon both escort them back to the Neverland shores where they make sure none of the beasts or pirates come. But with Peter gone there is relative safety on the Neverland.
After this, reader always returns to mermaid lagoon, but never on the night of the new moon, and often is given little gifts from the two mermaids. Pearls, combs, shells, and the like. Reader does the same and gives nuts, acorns, and pretty leaves they find making friends with the two mermaids that saved them.
