"Happiness in intelligent people is the rarest thing I know."
Tumblr media
Ernest Miller Hemingway was an American novelist, short-story writer and journalist. Best known for an economical, understated style that significantly influenced later 20th-century writers, he is often romanticized for his adventurous lifestyle and outspoken and blunt public image.
Born: 21 July 1899, Oak Park, Illinois, United States
Died: 2 July 1961 (age 61 years), Ketchum, Idaho, United States
War Veteran: Hemingway served as an ambulance driver in Italy during World War I. He was wounded in action, an experience that deeply influenced his writing, particularly his novel "A Farewell to Arms," which is partly based on his wartime experiences.
Literary Icon: Hemingway is considered one of the most influential writers of the 20th century. His minimalist writing style, characterized by short, declarative sentences and understated emotion, revolutionized modern literature. He won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954 for his "masterpieces" which "shimmer with a unique style."
Adventure and Travel: Hemingway was known for his adventurous spirit and love of travel. He often sought out dangerous or exotic locales for his writing and personal pursuits, such as bullfighting in Spain, big-game hunting in Africa, and fishing in Cuba. His experiences in these settings often found their way into his stories and novels.
The Old Man and the Sea: One of Hemingway's most famous works is the novella "The Old Man and the Sea," published in 1952. It tells the story of an ageing Cuban fisherman, Santiago, who engages in an epic struggle with a giant marlin far out at sea. The novella won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1953 and contributed to Hemingway receiving the Nobel Prize.
Personal Life and Demise: Hemingway led a tumultuous personal life marked by marriages, divorces, and struggles with mental health. He was married four times and had three sons. Sadly, Hemingway also battled depression and alcoholism throughout his life. He tragically took his own life in 1961 at the age of 61, leaving behind a legacy of literary brilliance and enduring influence.

(Book 28) Beartown by Fredrik Backman ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2 This one really got to me. It took me forever to read this one, but it was worth it. In a word, this book is heavy. The subject matter is heavy. The writing is excellent, but heavy. The characters come burdened with so much baggage you can almost feel the weight on your own shoulders. It took me almost two months to read this book, and it might take the rest of the year to process it. Backman is a fantastic author. He creates engrossing settings and vivid characters. He includes profound thoughts on almost every page, using the lives of everyday people to examine the human experience on a deeper, thought-provoking level than one would normally attribute to small towns and sports teams. When I say heavy, I mean heavy. Each chapter will give you your own little existential crisis. I didn't give this five stars because of language and some content, but mostly I didn't because it's made me terrified of having teenagers. However, I was deeply moved by this book and will probably read it again in a few years. I would give some trigger warnings (there are plenty), but I think that would defeat the purpose of the book. #read #read2023 #readersofinstagram #fiction #modernliterature #sweden https://www.instagram.com/p/CqLtUy5vT1E/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

"The networked society, with its information overload and constant connectivity, is changing what it means to be human. The proliferation of cameras makes everything performative, putting us continually on display while making us cripplingly self-conscious. The constant curated drip-feed of our community’s highlight reel leaves us feeling inadequate and dissatisfied with the regular, humdrum details of our daily lives. Exposure to massive networks of near-strangers leaves us feeling insecure, unsteady, vaguely defensive and often outright aggressive. The Candy House, the spiritual successor and loose sequel to Jennifer Egan’s rock ‘n roll novel A Visit from the Goon Squad – winner of the Pulitzer Prize, the Los Angeles Times Book Prize and the National Book Critics Award – is a funhouse mirror distortion of our current world told from a vaguely dystopian near-future that is all too recognizable while still being entertainingly far-out and imaginative." Happy book release day to @jennifereganwriter, whose wonderful The Candy House (@scribnerbooks) came out today in paperback. Its one of my favourite books of the past few years. #lesenmachtglücklich #feministliterature #femalewriters #lesenbildet #popliteratur #socksandbooks #strickenundlesen #sockknitting #sockenstricken #paulairmschler #superbusen #modernliterature https://www.instagram.com/p/CKyaJORpamA/?igshid=q20wxjjz1nsn

Edward Trencom’s Nose: a book I selected because it popped up at my library when I searched for ‘cheese.’ I read nearly all of it on my plane rides to and from California, and would have finished it earlier if I hadn’t been so busy celebrating my grandma’s birthday! It is a quintessentially British novel about a cheesemonger, his cheese shop, and his unexpectedly but very Greek nose. There were so many cheeses mentioned in the book that I’m going to have to revisit it and make a list of all the ones I need to research. Do you love cheese and modern British novels? Then this book might be for you! 🧀 🇬🇧 #cheese #edwardtrencomsnose #britishnovel #britishbooks #gilesmilton #curdnerd #cheesemonger #cheeselover #certifiedcheeseprofessional #americancheesesociety #booklover #modernliterature #acsccp #brie #stilton #cheeseshop (at Bellingham, Washington) https://www.instagram.com/p/B5DxndKg2ab/?igshid=1uc1nt27dmv0b

Always there
She has long forgotten how long she has been standing there at the exact same spot in the middle of that small park below the heavy branches of that mature sycamore maple. Let there be sun or rain, snowstorm or heatwave, day or night she was there waiting for them to choose her instead of all the others offering their services.
She was kindly inviting everyone to the comfort of her lap, young and old, people of all race and all faith even the faithless.  She welcomed them with the same unconditional love and affection, hugging and holding their tired bodies, offering them a safe space to recover, to let go of emotions running high inside them, or just to emerge in the feeling of being totally accepted and held like in the womb of their mothers.
She could feel the warmth of their bodies touching hers, she could feel their heartbeat and thus she knew right away if they were at peace or emotionally stirred-up and excited, she was the perfect partner to all of them. She did not say a word, she did not judge them, she just listened with every cell of her body and held them safe. That is why they kept coming back to her again and again. Though there were some one-time encounters too, tourists, people visiting the town  and never returning to her, but to tell the truth, she had a diffrent link with her regulars.
The ones that kept returning to her, like that young man who always came around lunchtime, or the old lady who loved to feed the pigeons, the kid who made his homework after school, the homeless guy, who came back home to her every night. With them, it was always something special, some even caressed her rusty arms before leaving, the young mother sometimes cleaned her gently with a smooth wet cloth to get rid of the dirt and the dust, and the playful noisy children who always said hello and thanked her for being available.
Once, she heard two pigeons talking around her legs. One said to the other:
-          Look at this poor bench, she cannot move, she is cursed to stay at this park all her life. We are so lucky to have wings so we can fly away to wherever we wish.
She just smiled, and thought that in her next life too, she wants to be a bench in a park welcoming people of all kind, let it be day or night, sunshine or raining.

The Glass Castle Book Review
Tumblr media
The first time I read the Glass Castle was in 2017. The book has published for more than 15 years yet I find its content still both prevalent and pertinent to our society nowadays.
I’ve come to love all of the Walls kids from Jeannette, Lori, Brian, to Maureen (even though she wasn’t described in detailed) due to their resilient, sanguine, and incredibly strong personality towards any obstacles in life while dealing with two dysfunctional parents. However, I couldn’t flatly repudiate the assertion of the parents that have made them become incredible grown-ups like they’re now. Each of them love their parents, no doubt. But they never let themselves mesmerize in their love and blindly accept the scarcity of love from both of their parents. They love them but they’re self-aware. They know all of their mom’s and dad’s vows are fragile just like the promise of building a glass castle for them.
The glass castle could appear glamorous and adorned on the outside yet in the side it’s nothing but a hollow void of love and transparently shown by the glass. It’s similar to the case of Rex Wall because he never becomes pragmatic even though he has enough capabilities to take care of his family. He couldn’t stay committed to his jobs, quit his drinking habits. Same with Rose Marry, she loves Rex Wall enough to live in that pseudo optimistic dream with him and his nomadic life style. She loves him enough to embrace his weakness, to become his partner, and most importantly to never leave him alone. Yet it’s also the tragedy of the family. Because Rose Marry could condone any Rex’s neglect towards the family; she also has lied to herself manifold times that this is life that they have designed for their kids so they could grow to become stronger, more independent like those Joshua trees she always painted.
Her kids are not illusory like her. They indeed grow stronger based on their parents’s neglect and yearn to escape from poverty. Consciousness. What they have is consciousness. They realize that this peripatetic life style is not what they aspire to live. Each of the Wall kids also made their own goal, their own version of the Glass Castle: New York City. The hustling and glamorous city that never ceases lighting. They also wish that one day they could arrive to that promising land and fulfill the Glass Castle like their dads, but the only difference is that they did achieve their dreams, their dads didn’t.
The goal was accomplished by the unanimous bond from the elder sibling to the younger sibling. Lori was the first one to leave, then Brian, then Jeannette and finally Maureen.
The beauty in struggle. This is indeed the beauty in struggle that I wish Rex and Rose Marry could see instead of chasing behind their delusional ideals.
I love the book for its incomplete (in my opinion) ending. I still think it’s a happy and bright ending but that doesn’t mean it has to perfect from the beginning until the end. A little bit of incomplete is what makes the story even more memorable and indelible in the mind of readers

"Demon Copperhead is that rare and special and unique specimen – an important book. Having a human face to massive issues helps to make them more real, more relatable. We can become numb to the facts and numbers and figures, to the endless catechism of bad news and atrocities." My review of @barbara.kingsolver's exquisite new masterpiece, Demon Copperhead (@harpercollins), which transplants Charlies Dickens' David Copperfield to modern-day Appalachia, is up now on Spectrum Culture. "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way — in short, the period was so far like the present period, that some of its noisiest authorities insisted on its being received, for good or for evil, in the superlative degree of comparison only." Opening of "The Tales Of Two Cities; Charles Dickens". A right novel in the right hand, the beginning alone can make you feel like you’ve just fallen into a fast-flowing river, snatched away from reality, and hurtled downhill. It is hard to choose favorite openings between these astonishing novels, but mine favorite opening, maybe "1984 - Goerge Orwell", "A Frolic of His Own - William Gaddis", "The Hobbit - J. R. R. Tolkien", "The Godfather - Mario Puzo", or "Waiting - Ha Jin". It's really hard to choose one. Which opening lines you find interesting? I stopped by Vroman's in Pasadena (Southern California's oldest and largest bookstore) and bought a copy of Harper's Magazine from their news stand. This issue has a good cover article about the housing crisis in the Bay Area in which the author talks about The Ghost Ship fire in 2016 where 36 people died and how to get an "affordable" rental in Oakland you need to be part of or affiliated with the bay community, else just be a highly paid techie or programmer who can pay the market rate. The artist class is out of luck there. The Bay Area is done with them. There's also an brief archive reprint from Harper's on page 37 from a larger essay originally published in April 1932 titled San Francisco Blues by Lillian Symes that I found fascinating. Gentrification's first post-earthquake/fire in that boom town. #finereading #modernliterature (at Vroman's Bookstore) https://www.instagram.com/p/B5o1cgbleS-/?igshid=13c2pi8q74ne9
