I usually don't do the whole New Years Resolution thing, but this years it's different. Dr. Jordan Peterson has a "top 100" list of recommended literature, and I am going to go through them one by one, to see how many I can complete. I am including film adaptations and listening on Audible. So many of these I remember reading decades ago as required reading for high school or my college literature classes, but most will be first time reads for me. The last 2 days I read A Farewell to Arms (Ernest Hemingway). I still want to see both versions of the movie, one made in the 1932 with Helen Hayes and Gary Cooper, and another made in 1957 with Jennifer Jones and Rock Hudson, the latter being more fluff of the two, according to critics. The ending of the book slayed me. But it is great fun to read sad books and day drink. Here is a sampling. The rest can be found on his website.

The virgin suicides - Jeffrey Eugenides
"The Virgin Suicides" by Jeffrey Eugenides is a haunting and atmospheric book that captivates with its eloquent prose and rich descriptions. However, there were moments of slowness that hindered the pacing and left me yearning for more immediate progression. The perspective of the boys narrating the story provided an interesting lens, but limited insight into the minds of the Lisbon sisters themselves. Despite this limitation, the character development shines, with the Lisbon sisters portrayed with a delicate blend of mystery and vulnerability. Their haunting presence lingers, showcasing Eugenides' skill in crafting complex and memorable characters. It tackles the heavy and sensitive topic of teen girl suicides with a delicate touch. Through the tragic fate of the Lisbon sisters, the novel shines a light on the profound emotional struggles that young girls can face. It raises important questions about societal pressures, isolation, and the impact of mental health issues on vulnerable individuals. The narrative serves as a poignant reminder of the need for empathy, understanding, and support when addressing such devastating circumstances. "The Virgin Suicides" prompts readers to reflect on the significance of early intervention, open communication, and fostering a compassionate environment to prevent similar tragedies from occurring.Overall, "The Virgin Suicides" is a thought-provoking novel that explores themes of youth, tragedy, and human emotions. It is a worthy addition to any literary collection, although readers who prefer a faster pace or a diverse range of perspectives should approach it with caution.

Just discovered these fantastic books written by author Rebecca Westcroft in collaboration with Libby Scott, a child with autism.
A powerful insight into masking and the day to day experiences of children with autism.
The first book “can you see me?” has had a profound impact on me, as a parent of a neurodivergent child. I am sharing it with everyone in our family in the hopes of helping them to understand him.
Give them a try!

Reading and I
With the ascent of technology, so many websites and stimulating social media apps fight for my very short attention span. Every single time my phone opens, I feel suddenly sucked by this deep and huge vortex and all I can do is surrender to its power. Fortunately, I found a savior in reading. Reading has become the force that pulls me back to safety and from being gnawed to pieces by the distractions of technology. It allowed me to shift my head from time to time from a screen to a paper. Needless to say, though I have nothing against reading on a computer or other similar medium, reading physical books allowed me to create and maintain a clear boundary for myself. It made it possible for me to have a sanctuary. I can just peacefully sit at a corner of the most unfamiliar place and feel at home.
All of these praise that I have for reading is a fruit of a relationship tested and molded by time. In order to yield the fruits of its presence – the calmness I so proudly announce, it is required of me to show up and read and I did. There are times that I missed but surely, I always come back to it by striving to live by the rule of never missing twice that I learned from the book Atomic Habits by James Clear (2018, p. 201). By doing so, I made reading a natural part of my day and in days I miss, I forgive myself and proceed to pick up my unfinished book.
The thing I love about nonfictional and fictional books is that I get to learn about the people that have lived before me. Their desires, struggles, and the way they chose to handle life and everything it offers.  As they impart in their writing the lives they have lived and the lives they wished they lived, I am urged to think about the own life I am living and the direction to which I am taking it to. More than a sanctuary, reading made it possible for me to know myself better because it breeds not just an improved vocabulary but most importantly, awareness and accountability. That is why I can say that in days I feel lost, I pick up a book and if I am lucky enough, it might just be the compass I need for my journey in life or in the very least, within it lies, the motivation to begin again.

"Demon Copperhead is that rare and special and unique specimen – an important book. Having a human face to massive issues helps to make them more real, more relatable. We can become numb to the facts and numbers and figures, to the endless catechism of bad news and atrocities." My review of @barbara.kingsolver's exquisite new masterpiece, Demon Copperhead (@harpercollins), which transplants Charlies Dickens' David Copperfield to modern-day Appalachia, is up now on Spectrum Culture. Holding my Brandon Sanderson books close to my heart; right where they belong! I was introduced to @brandsanderson books by a client and fellow high fantasy book lover about 6 years ago. I immediately fell in love with his world building and powerful soulful messages in his books. I was also thrilled to find out he’s published a TON of material and keeps churning out books every year. I’m sure you can all relate how amazing it is when you find an author you love to also find out they have lots of books you can read! Whose your favourite author at the moment? . . . . . #greatbooks #librarybooks #bookstores #readingiscool #booksaremagic #booksaremylife #bookpile #bookpassion #readreadread #bookishpost #booksonbooks #keepreading #bookclubs #bookwormlife #bookwormproblems #booknook #booksta #booksharks #bookreading #booklist #thrillerbooks #youngadultfiction #fictionbooks (at Bookstagram) https://www.instagram.com/p/CY93SK_L-NY/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
