it’s frustrating the people are expecting palestine to roll over and accept fate, or try and negotiate for peace. they have been colonised mercilessly by isreal… and they’re meant to be ok with that?!
fuck what you think they should do, palestine are well within their right to protect what is theirs. fuck your privilege of sitting their and saying "violence isn’t the answer"
use that argument against israel, tell them that violence isn’t the answer

Speaking on behalf of Secretary-General António Guterres, he also reminded the participants of the challenges which face the so-called Non-Self-Governing Territories which remain around the world.
“Global cooperation is central to addressing its impacts”, he underscored, urging the Committee, also known as C-24, to “commit to making 2022 a year of recovery for everyone”.
‘A unique platform’
The Special Committee is “a unique platform to promote the implementation of the Declaration on Decolonization”, in accordance with all relevant resolutions, the senior UN official said.
Last year, the C-24 made every effort for the territories and others to engage and be heard.
He drew attention to new working methods, that allow the Committee to hear first from the territories before considering related resolutions.
The C-24 remains committed to the fulfilling its mandate, assured Mr. Rattray.
He described transparent and constructive dialogue as “pivotal” in opening further opportunities which could see progress towards full decolonization.
Guided by the UN Charter and relevant resolutions, “the Secretariat will continue to support the Special Committee in its work to promote decolonization”, concluded the Chef de Cabinet.
COVID in the mix
The Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, Rosemary DiCarlo, pointed out that the “health, social and economic consequences of COVID-19” have served to compound the development challenges that territories have long faced.
“Addressing these impacts requires improved global cooperation and solidarity”, including vaccine equity to enable COVID inoculations that are affordable and accessible to all, she said
“Vaccinationalism is self-defeating and will only delay global recovery”, added Ms. DiCarlo, encouraging countries to stick to the commitment to leave no-one behind.
Constructive relationships ‘indispensable’
This session marks the beginning of the Fourth International Decade for the Eradication of Colonialism and December 2020 marked the 60th anniversary of the Decolonization Declaration.
The Committee continues its efforts to implement the Declaration and is further determined to strengthen informal dialogues with “administering powers” – the countries which continue to hold or claim sovereignty over territories - and other stakeholders, according to the UN political chief.
“A constructive relationship with all involved is indispensable for the advancement of the decolonization process, on a case-by-case basis”, she said.
In closing, Ms. DiCarlo stressed that expediting the decolonization process is “imperative” and urged everyone to “engage in new dynamics” to address the challenges ahead.
Work in progress
Since the birth of the United Nations, more than 80 former colonies comprising some 750 million people, have gained independence.
As 17 Non-Self-Governing Territories (NSGTs) remain – or nearly two million people – the process of decolonization continues.
Completing this mandate will require continuing dialogue among the administering powers, the 29 different nations that make up the Special Committee, and the Non-Self-Governing Territories.

this is a HETALIA post that will end with a conclusion about hetalia. thx
i dont want to focus too much on global south victimhood or this or that, i dont want to take away agency from the global south, but its kind of heartbreaking to me how you can run through the entire history of this or that western country with colonialism, imperialist wars, and the flow of money as a footnote, but the histories of those countries they ravaged are forever ripped by that same imperialism.
I guess i was thinking about this, about history and nation personifications and what counts as ‘political’. To be honest, its impossible for me to totally separate nation and history from politics, to completely cleanse away the mentions of anything bad or scary or painful, you may treat it gently or grimly or comedically but it’s always going to be there as long as you see these nations as nations, as history (ie not an AU). And of course, that history of the global south which so deeply intertwines with colonialism/imperialism is almost always labeled as political, always seen as sensitive.
However… I think it’s telling that much of the fandom who engages with western characters (and I should put a quick disclaimer that there is nothing wrong with that in and of itself) are able to shrug the colonialism away and simply choose not to engage. Just like history books on western nations can cleanly sweep each war, each colony, each invasion under a quickly brushed aside footnote, it’s not hard to look away from where the money and resources come from. Total empire, colony influence on the metropole, they do exist, but what are they compared to the influence on the colony itself? To build the framework of a nation personification of a formerly colonized country, to make even the most basic decisions on their age and birth and identity becomes difficult without delving into the imperialist violence that formed their modern state. To give a recount of any country ravaged by imperialist wars, it’s impossible to avoid giving name to the violence that left the nation reeling into modern day.
So, yes, it’s very telling to me how easy it is to brush aside ‘politics’ when speaking only of western nation personifications.

Project Nimbus is a 1.2$ billion contract to provide cloud services for the Israeli government and military, signed by technology companies Google and Amazon.
The service provided is powered by AI and uses surveillance and facial recognition to create an exhaustive database of the Palestinian citizens in the West Bank, containing confidential information such as their name, address, car license plate, and whether they're "wanted" or not.
In this video, we see how this is transposed in reality in the city of Hebron.

I am eternally amazed at how sensitive the portuguese are at the subject of colonialism. The idea that we practised some sort of soft colonialism is so ingrained in our minds people will be fighting for their lives to defend this idea (which, btw, is still a remnant of Salazar's propaganda). Brazil's colonialism is such a hyper sensitive topic you can see the vein popping on the neck of the average Zé when someone even lightly mentions accountability. I dead ass remember my 7th grade teacher telling our class that Brazil's colonialism consisted of "jesuit priests playing music, which enticed the natives" and that was it (flutes too, to be precise, for some fucking reason) and everyone has just blindly believed this and refused to accept the actual horrible history we're a part of. Portuguese people will be fighting for their lives on technicalities. Say "The portuguese invented the slave trade" and Salvador over there will jump from under the table to explain that akshually african people were the ones to sell their own people as slaves!!! And askhually, slavery goes back for centuries!! You know what they mean, you know what needs to be discussed here, but my boy Salvador is on a mission. He doesn't even care that he's regurgitating fascist propaganda that was entirely built on ahistorical facts that specifically sought to promote colonialism and imperialism as a progressive idea, no, none of that matters. It matters that we are miserable people who will perpetually long for the past, look back on something utterly atrocious and willingly ignore the brutality of it, because we cannot come to terms with the fact that today we live in a country that's ripe with corruption, unlivable wages and high cost of living; we cannot come to terms with the fact that we did all this colonialism just to be a poor fucking country that's being exploited by digital nomads; in fact, we just cannot tolerate the idea that we're just a summer resort for americans and brits and have absolutely no economical relevance in the world, not even cultural, but hey, cultural meaning can be invented. So we look back, we wail and cry and look back at these centuries when we pillaged, enslaved and destroyed because at least we meant something, because we once divided the world in two with Spain, that's how big our balls were once, and because once people knew who we were, they our name beyond the one football player. We purposefully disregard the horrid shit. We coast through life without ever, ever acknowledging it ever existed. We're taught in school colonialism was soft core at best, tell some bullshit about some priests with flutes and be done with it, and then when someone finally confronts us for our history, on god, we'll be fighting with everything we have to prove to you that our colonialism was just fine, and we, white men of the 16th century, showed these countries the meaning of civilisation! Orgulhosamente sós, am i right bitches

ngl though it is kinda weird for people to swear off chik-fil-a but not do the same for hobby lobby.
like lest we forget all the weird stuff hobby lobby does to its employees, like denying them coverage of birth control and “encouraging” them to be and remain christian and not using barcodes not-so-subtly because theyre the mark of the beast or whatever. or like. hobby lobby using funds from its business to fund actual terrorist organizations in the middle east via smuggling cultural artifacts for a “bible museum” it was building.
like. are we not gonna refuse to go to hobby lobby and chew out people who do so. no? no???

you know in 3rd grade the teachers tried to get us to experience north american settlement from the pov of native americans. which is really fucked for multiple reasons. but we had a paper frieze with individual elements in it, like trees and animals and houses from "our village" and "their village", and every few days the teacher would remove trees and animals and expand their area, or we'd roleplay scenarios where it was clear we were not being treated well
being all of 7, we understood that this was unfair and sucked.
a week or so into this, when the teacher left the room for a few minutes, we added paper fire to their paper houses. because fuck them.
she removed the fire because it didn't fit into her lesson plan.
but I remember an entire class full of children who understood innately that people experiencing colonialism had the right to fight back. I wish that teacher had been cooler

sorry but as much as i usually vibe with "british people bad" posts i do fuckin hate that post where some random uk uni student is like "wow it's wild that they have dangerous animals in the USA, we don't anymore" and people go on for paragraphs tearing them to absolute shreds over the destruction of british ecosystems centuries ago in some kind of bizarrely hostile gotcha as though by neutrally stating "the major predators here were hunted to extinction" the original tagger must have naturally been clapping and cheering with glee about that fact, or that they personally went wolf hunting in 1137 and stripped the scottish countryside of its rich forests with their bare hands

Book recs! Do you like random information? Do you like plants? Do you like knowing how a plant was used, socioeconomic impacts, legends, or scientific facts about plants? These books are a grab-bag of fun plant info featuring species from around the world (and often associated with places they didn't originally come from). The books are also gorgeously illustrated.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I've been terrible at finishing books in the last decade, but both of these I read cover to cover. Each plant has a page or two about it, so if you have a short attention span (like me these days) you can read an entry here and there and get enjoyment the whole read through. The eclectic information paired with dry humor really made it for me. So if this is your speed (or you like pretty botanical art), go forth and read!
