To say you were mad wouldn´t even begin to cover what you were feeling at the moment.

It had been a while since you and Wooyoung had hung out but today was your weekly movie night, something that had been tradition since the two of you were teenagers.

A tradition that had apparently been forgotten by the troublemaker you called your best friend.

Ever since the two of you had started collage, the boy had become more and more distant. Making friends left and right while you´d rather stay at home listen to music or play video games.

The longer you watched him socialize, the harder it became to stay close to him.

It wasn´t that you were mad at him for getting to know new people but watching him go out with his new friends and getting left on read let your anger slowly simmer to the surface.

Yeosang and San were nice, there was no arguing about that but the longer you watched, the stronger the trio grew together. Without you.

Your movie nights were the only thing that stayed consistent throughout the semester.

Up until now at least!

By now, the Pizza you had ordered went cold and the movie you had started was almost over. The clock on your microwave showed 11:52 p.m, glowing in a bright red color as the rest of the room stayed dark. Save from the illuminating light the TV gave off.

Your phone stayed silent as the dozens of messages you had left Wooyoung had gone straight to the voicemail, texts had been left unanswered and your mood dropped further that it already had.

If only you hadn´t gone on instagram earlier!

Then you wouldn´t have seen the story he posted while getting drunk with his two new friends at someone’s house party.

Exactly what you needed now!

Deciding to try your luck again, you picked you phone up and pressed the call button one last time.

It rung a few times and you already thought of hanging up when Wooyoung finally managed to pick up the call.

“WHAT DO YOU WANT Y/N?” he yelled rudely over the music and you had to pull the phone away from your ear because of the sudden noise.

“What do you mean Wooyoung, It´s Friday! Like in Movie-Night-Friday! Why aren’t you here? Or if you were planning to go somewhere with the boys then why didn´t you cancel?”

The disappointment was evident in your voice and Wooyoung would have to be very gone not to hear it, even over the phone.

He let out a suffering sigh before answering in a low voice.

“Come on bunny. Don´t tell me you are seriously mad about it! We have these nights every week and Yeosangie invited me and Sannie to go to this party with him. It´s no big deal!”

You couldn´t believe what you heard. Not a big deal? Did this really mean so little to him?

“No big deal? Wooyoung I’ve been waiting for the better part of the evening for you to call and cancel or at least some kind of text that you wouldn’t show up but instead I get nothing. You wouldn´t even answer my messages! And what’s worse is that I find out you went to go to a party through your instagram story? That´s fucked up!”

It was obvious to you that this conversation annoyed the other. The way he huffed was a dead give away!

“Sorry but it was a last minute thing. I´ll call next time okay? But I got to go now, talk to you later! Bye.”

With that call ended. You were stunned to silence. Did he really just hang up on you?

You lowered your hand slowly from your ear before starting to clean up the living room. Wooyoung could really be an idiot if he wanted to be!

Anger started to consume you as the Pizza box got placed on the kitchen counter and the soju bottles vanished in the fridge. Neither got touched even once!

Your phone lit up again but this time it was you who left him on read.

Wooyoung had sent a message, hoping to placate you at least a little.

What were you supposed to answer? It´s fine? Absolutely not!

Instead of answering, you connected the phone with the charger and got ready for bed. You knew you weren’t going to sleep but wallowing in self-pity wouldn´t get you anywhere either.

Tomorrow was another day and since it was a weekend you could finally sleep in and rest for a while.

The next day you got rudely woken up by a pillow to the face.

“WHAT THE HELL?” you groaned and sat up to look at the offender.

What you didn´t expect was to see Wooyoung sitting on the foot of your bed. The boy had gotten a key to your apartment almost the minute you had signed the contract for the apartment and it wasn´t the first time the boy had let himself in either.

But you had expected for him to sleep in today and cure his hangover. Apparently that wasn´t the case!

“What are you doing here Woo?” you sighed, letting yourself fall back into the pillow to try and go back to sleep.

“You weren´t answering your phone!” he whined loudly.

“Oh so now not answering is a problem? Are you kidding me?”

Rolling your eyes hard before turning your back to the boy sitting on your blanket did not make him go away as you hoped!

Wooyoung realized that you were truly mad at him when you didn´t budge at his insistent shaking on your shoulder.

“Seriously Wooyoung, go away! That´s what you seem to do a lot recently!”

“Are you seriously still mad about yesterday? I told you why I didn´t call!” he reasoned, brushing his hair out of his eyes.

“No you didn´t! You said it was a last minute thing but not why you didn´t call and you can shove your apology up your ass by the way! If you could even call it one! Go back to Yeosang and San okay. They are probably waiting for you somewhere!”

You looked back at him. It seemed that he still didn´t understand what was actually bothering you and just looking at his face made the anger and hurt come back full force.

“Why are you so mad at me? I´m sorry that I didn´t call, it was a dick move from me but we´ve done these movie night every week since we were teenagers. Is it really so bad that I missed one?”

“It is to me! In case you haven´t noticed but these movie nights have been the only chance for us to hang out recently since you always hang out with the boys. Which is fine by me and it would have been fine if you had just called and talked to me instead of just not showing up and ignoring me!”

Something in the boy clicked. He didn´t even realize that he hadn´t been hanging out with you! Has it really been that long? The boy couldn´t even remember the last time he had seen you longer then for a few minutes in between classes.

Guilt crept up on him as he looked at you. As much as you wanted to hide from him that you were hurt, he knew you to well for that!

You had always been someone he could come to when something was bothering him, so for you to turn your back and hide behind a wall of blankets and silence pained him greatly.

“Y/n… I’m sorry. I didn´t realize it has been that long. Can you look at me please?”

You had to force down a sob, desperately trying to hide the tears threatening to leave your eyes.

Wooyoung saw your struggle immediately. He laid down behind you, wrapping his arms around your midsection.

“Just tell me if you want to hang out with them instead of me. I get it honestly I do, but being forgotten without a word of why hurts okay?!”

“Oh bunny I could never forget about you! You´re my best friend. Don´t doubt that! I love Sangie and Sannie but no matter how much I hang out with them, you will always be my favorite person!”

You turned towards him, hiding your face in his chest while letting the tears run freely.

It felt amazing to hear those words but no matter what he said, forgiving him was not something you could do.

At least not right now…

horror story of a teenage 5sos blogger

let me set the scene - its the mid 2010s, I'm 17, in the height of my 5sos fan career, im watching keek compilations all day and scrolling tumblr all night. Life is good.

Fast forward a few months and I start talking to this cute boy at school. we start going on dates, having first kisses - and first everything elses. we're falling madly in love. it's intense (and so cringy to look back at as an adult) but again, life is good! not a worry in the world!!

eventually.. it somehow comes up that my boyfriend and i both have tumblrs (of VERY different nature's mind you). we wanted to show eachother things we'd found online but we were both adamant we didn't want to see eachothers blogs (FOR OBVIOUS REASONS). instead of following each other, we would send each other screenshots of funny textposts, pictures, etc. - blacking out our respective blog names and url's to protect our online anonymity. life is good!

now by day, I'm spending all hours messaging my totally hot boyfriend but by night... by night, I'm reblogging hot gifs of calum hood, smut fanfics, imagines, general gifs of hot couples making out (ifykyk). it's the HEIGHT of tumblr fanfiction and imagine culture and I could not get enough. i was exploring things in real life with my boyfriend while also exploring online through fics. reblogging every single thing along the way. i was having my cake and eating it too and it was a fucking good time to be alive. life is so good!

of course, like any normal person, I was using my tags as a stream of consciousness. a way to get out my feelings about cal, about my boyfriend, about being a teenager, about LITERALLY EVERYTHING. Unfiltered, hormonal, teenage girl writing about the boys she likes. every. damn. night. life! is! good!

until.. all until.. my boyfriend and i were lying together in a park, under a tree, light filtering down on us as we talk and laugh and kiss - a perfect afternoon UNTIL he says there's something he has to tell me. 'what does *name of my blog* mean?'

TURNS OUT, the very first time I sent him a screenshot of something, I didn't black out my url properly and he had been SECRETLY STALKING MY BLOG FOR MONTHHHSSSS.

MONTHS

MONTHS!!!!!!

Literally just months worth of calum hood smut, so.much.smut, smut requests too!!!, soft porn gifs WITH TAGS LITERALLY EXPLICITLY ABOUT MY BOYFRIEND, countless text posts about our dates and whatever the fuck I was thinking or feeling that day, 5sos drama, EVERYTHING. EVERYTHINGGGGG. ABSOLUTELY EV ER Y THIN G

needless to say that blog was immediately scorched from the surface of the earth. and since then, I virtually haven't been on 5sos tumblr - until now. I was so mortified that I wasn't just throwing my thoughts into the void, I was literally scarred.

we're still together though lol I guess he some how liked me enough to look past the 5sos blog HAHA. he's a much stronger person than I because if the roles were reversed and he had some obsessed teenage fan blog, I think i would have gotten the ick straight away. Especially since I literally NEVER talked about 5sos with him because I was soooo embarrassed that I was obsessed with them (this was album one era guys HAHA and my boyfriend was way cooler than me in highschool). now I don't care, I play them in the shower all the time - he can deal with it hahaha

moral of the story is, idk don't tell your teenage boyfriend you have tumblr cause he will find your blog

hi friends !! bit of a different post this time, but i wanna talk about disney and it’s place in the agere community.

i won’t get into specifics, but events in palestine r making a lot of people (including me) decide to boycott disney by not doing anything that lets them make money. if you don’t know about this, i rly rly encourage you to do ur own research (ideally while not in little space since it’s .. very rough topics) and make ur own choice on wether or not u wanna support them after knowing the full story of what’s going on n disney’s involvement.

this post is for littles who feel conflicted by the calls for a boycott!!

first of all, i know it can be scary to find out that something you’ve been giving money to for merch or subscriptions or whatever is going to a bad place. but no one is blaming you for that, and if you didn’t know then you didn’t know. but you can always change!!

"why are people boycotting disney?"

i won't go in depth to keep this post little-safe, but essentially the israeli military is currently doing terrible things to the people of palestine, and disney is helping them fund and promote it. here's a couple links that go more in-depth if you want to learn, but i'd recommend not reading them while regressed:

“but disney is a huge comfort source for me.”

this doesn’t have to change. you don’t have to stop liking their movies n shows. you don’t have to stop loving your toys or books of disney characters. if something brings you comfort, that is sacred, and no one can take that away. a lot of disney media made me who i am today, and yet i’m still writing this post against the company, these things can both be true !!

similarly, agere is a safe space for so many people, which can be used to justify supporting things that really don't deserve our support, since people want to protect themselves by not finding out why. put bluntly, people knowing that there are problems, but choosing to ignore them, is part of the problem itself. if you feel at all capable of educating yourself, please do. it's so important.

“ok, so what can i do?”

if you’ve decided to join the boycott, that’s wonderful!! all that is being asked, is to not spend money on anything from disney. so branded food, toys, a disney+ subscription, stuff like that. if you’re used to doing that a lot, here’s some alternatives!

. :+* get disney toys second hand - they’re pre-loved!! they’ve already started a life with someone, and they’re eager to continue it with a new kid

. :+* pirate shows n movies instead !! this can be a little tricky to figure out, but it’s how i watch pretty much everything hehe, and can be a lot of fun! alternatively, you could just borrow a friend’s subscription or buy dvds second hand if you have a dvd player.

. :+* get merch from independent sellers. this way, you still get brand new things with ur favorite disney characters, but you also get to support independent creators n not support disney the brand !! also, these are often higher quality than official products too, which is like bonus points.

. :+* if you're posting about somethin disney related, add a note that lets people know that you don't support the brand n encourages ppl to find out why for themselves

it’s a tough change to make, but any help is better than no help. if you aren’t sure what i’m talking about, please do your own research. the scale of what’s happening in palestine is huge, and boycott movements like this have been proven to cause real positive change in the past. i won’t get mad at anyone for choosing not to boycott, but it’s important to me that as many people as possible consciously make that choice for themselves, instead of blindly following a company that’s using their money to hurt people.

hearing about terrible things happening is exhausting, regardless of how much you're doing to help. but try to remember that any action is better than nothing, especially with activism, and keep doing whatever you can. <3 take care of yourselves friends !!

i see the first days of our friendship, i see fanfiction rambles and hamilton references. i see long hours in musical rehearsals, watching you dance. i could have watched you dance forever.. i see that night on friday the first, sitting on the roof of the playground, watching the sunset. i see myself, sitting on my bed, panicked, texting my friend, just waiting for any response. i see the number 794 flashing in my head like a reminder of the words that got us here. i see that first date, when you held my hand in the movie theatre and leaned on my shoulder. i see that day in january at our friends house, kissing you on the stairs. i see your birthday with all our friends, and the tumblr post that night. today was a fairytale. i’m glad.

i see a tiny shoebox apartment, stretching out our paycheques to pay the rent so we can finish uni, curling up together late at night on a dodgy second-hand couch with our crappy tv. i see your first novel being published, i see our careers hitting a high and we move into our dream house out of the city, i see us adopting pets and fostering kids and i see the white picket fence life. i see date night every weekend and our birthday gifts getting more and more extravagant, i see us making dinner together and showing our kids the kind of love they’ll deserve to find.

i see you on our wedding day, looking handsome, in some suit you picked out yourself. i see bella and edith and ella and everyone else who’s backed us up there to support us, to watch us start the rest of our lives. the day we give a grand big “fuck you” to everyone who said we couldn’t, and the day we show our friends that “you and me? it’s a forever kind of thing.”

and i see the bad bits, too. i see the fights, and the tears, and all the nights we have to spend apart. i see christmas holidays stretching out ahead of us and trying to tread lightly until we’re safe away from our parents. i see a lot of bad things.

but what would the good things be, if we hadn’t had to work for them?

Episode 47 S5: Mana Runs too Slow and it Kills 2 People

Tumblr decided to change the way it does image posts so this is going to be my hell. I can only have max 30 "blocks" of images (yikes) and uploading all your images at once and then just adding text in between is actually not possible! (least it's a nightmare on browser. I have not figured out how to drag my text in between images, so I'm just uploading every image one by one and hoping I don't forget one)

Peeking up at us over the horizon, our end of the world apocalypse has reached the next step of his rampage: which is to shoot glowing missiles out of it's Dragon crotch until Egypt is destroyed.

Seto is doing his best to look productive, but unfortunately this is Sad Seto, who is still buffering.

Just uh...give him a minute. He has to remember how to be Seto.

I'm pretty sure Kissara told him straight up to call her whenever, and considering how few words they've ever said to each other, you'd think he'd remember the words she said like half an hour ago. Then again, he was kind of...sleeping when that happened. Or hallucinating, or dreaming, or all three.

Bakura and Yami are watching this pan out from the Shadow Game Zone, Bakura kind of nodding slowly while Yami becomes overwhelmed with embarrassment over how much everyone around him is screwing it. This is not meant to be funny, but it was very funny to me.

I have brought this up before, but Bakura does bring up a good point, that this entire arc was kind of against the grain of who Yami became over the course of the last 4 seasons.

+++++STAND BACK I'M GONNA RANT, FEEL FREE TO SKIP++++

Don't get me wrong, Yami LOVES to make bad choices that end the world. But why would he continue to go back here and destroy the world of the future he knows and loves so much? Especially since it already went SO south with Dartz the last time he opened pandora's box?

He has a new identity now, he has so many friends, last arc was just so many women throwing themselves at Yugi. His life is really good! I think they could have developed more of a line of logic between last arc and this arc, but like with a lot of things in this arc, it was rushed.

So him giving up his newfound modern identity that he made all himself through hard work and friendship first off feels kinda bad. Like I'm OK with him being a new guy, he worked hard for that! Lets not go backward now.

And then him coming here to regain his old identity is sort of like the show knew what it must do, but the characters were like "nah." and then went and did it anyway seemingly at gunpoint.

And I kind of wish there was any contrast between who Yami's new identity is in the future and who Yami was in the past. It would be fascinating to dive into the fact he's now two people yet again, even though Yugi is no longer in that bean. but eh save it for the fanfiction, because they needed to end Yugioh in a certain number of episodes.

And that happens sometimes. Stories are character driven, and when you try and drive the characters, they become less like people and more like iconic symbols. Here's our hero. He must do this because he's the hero. That's it, that's the reason. Welcome to Shonen Jump.

Problem is, Yami isn't that meta. He's dumb though, so in a way it does make a little sense why he had to open the box. He dummy thin.

And like in case you've jumped in here after my accidental hiatus (hello!) and not realized this, I had to binge watch the rest of the season before we cancelled our Hulu subscription. There was the option of watching it for free on the Yugioh website, but I didn't want to change my Photoshop actions.

So get ready for me to talk about how the ending of this show bothered me, for like 8 episodes. I'll try to keep it in, so we can get there when we get there.

But you can't say lines like "We were meant to be together." in the context of this arc, you can't DO that, show.

Apparently the creator of Yugioh got hospitalized while he wrote this arc, hence the dick king demon. But also it got....messy. We have like 3 seasons of development in like 8 episodes, buckle up. They did the best that they could do with the resource's given, and we'll even get to meet my favorite character a few times before it's over (the Storyboarding God that occasionally guest stars on Yugioh, love that guy)

Back on the playing field, Yami is running out of options, when Isis informs us we can just go to McDonald's and get more McGuffins.

Out of basically no where, Mana zips onto the screen because she's ready to have at least one girl's night before the end of the world. The contrasting energy from both Mana and Isis is peak goth babysitter vs the parrot that hides behind the couch and bites your feet.

Back near Pharaoh's tomb, Yugi is still dueling over a deathpit with the child who these kids think is Ryou bakura.

This is not however, Ryou Bakura. It's sideways adjacent evil Bakura.

And it didn't really matter that this plot point ever happened because it's not like Yugi, Joey, or Tea ever catch on that this isn't Ryou anyway. But at least I, the audience can feel a little bit better about the weird twist by the dub there.

Ryou is still passed out on some stone steps. He's fine.

You might be wondering "Oh so what asinine thing is Isis going to have to do to get the items back?" and uh, you're wrong actually.

Turns out we could have just picked up the items in the desert at any time but I guess we forgot. I'll blame it on Shadi.

Joey Wheeler, who can punch out probably anything but a ghost, chooses to hide behind Tea because he knows she can punch a ghost and I believe it, too.

Back on the surface, is a scene that would have been emotional if it hadn't been 3 minutes. it was NOT enough time to give a proper send off to our girl Isis here, and they tried, but if you imagine the Yakety Sax song playing under this death here, that's about the speed at which this girl biffed it.

speaking of Yakety Sax theme, this is what was happening while Mana was crying her eyes out.,

And you may ask, was it really that goofy? and yes, yes it was.

and like I get it, animation and pacing are really, really hard. Parts of me wonder if maybe on paper this seemed OK. If maybe even as a storyboard this seemed OK. But something you learn quickly when doing any sort of narrative art, is that you need like 2x as much space as you think you do. Pause is an underrated godlike skill that takes a lifetime to master.

However, it still had good stills going on, it still had some lovely direction just...I mean they dropped Isis from top to bottom of that frame so freakin fast it was like she was a dropped banana hahaha.

They still have to carry these items physically to the Pharaoh, and so becuase Mana is a slow runner, 2 people freakin died this episode distracting Zorc. Which is also the title of this episode because I want to send home howfreakin funny that is to me.

Ah, back to Episode 1.

So how breathtaking and epic is the Kaiju fight you ask? Well good thing for you, I capped it.

The look on Seto and Yami's faces about sum it up.

And as quickly as he showed up to do a few silly punches, the great Exodia was cut exactly in half. Don't ask me how the card logic works for that, I have forgotten how this game works already.

Mana finally makes it to Yami, cursed puzzle in hand, and that ends this episode.

Can you imagine adding 7 characters to a story knowing you have to kill all of them individually before the anime arc is over? Breakneck deaths going on here.

Sorry for all you people that were so deeply attached to Shimon, the guy who isn't even Grandpa, by the way. A moment of silence for all 4 of you.

And we get back this thing. This horrible thing made out of thousands of dead people's souls. The thing that trapped him for 5000 years and launched him into the future. The only thing that can save mankind.

(If I have used this Mokuba joke like this before forgive me it was like a different lifetime before I caught covid, and I will not be able to regain those memories because I cannot curse myself with a rude ass puzzle.)

The abusive relationship with the Millennium Puzzle is a whole anime college essay I would write if I had half a brain, but alas I have the immune system and fatigue of a sickly gerbil or a goldfish that feels a little bit chilly. So I will not be writing that in depth episode but like...

Think about how far we've come with this jackass puzzle. And yet, I'm supposed to forgive it? Nah I don't think I have yet. Go to hell, puzzle.

This puzzle can go straight to hell.

T*LC Refutation (but decidedly NOT johnlock refutation)

Part-2: What's wrong with their actual meta posts?

[Note: I love and ship johnlock because I saw it for myself in the show when I watched it and was part of the general audience in the past. I even want it to become canon in some Holmes adaption in the future. But T*lc needs to get sucked into obscurity and forgotten. Other fandoms like Good Omens, etc., are following the same rhetoric in their "meta" posts, and that needs to go. This is crucial for our basic critical thinking skills and objectivity.]

1.) Cherry picking and Tunnel vision: These two are almost always linked together.

Cherry- Picking: The action or practice of choosing and taking only the most beneficial or profitable items, opportunities, etc., from what is available.

Tunnel vision (in slang) : A tendency to think only about one thing and to ignore everything else.

This is the first fallacy that comes to mind. Even when I wasn't familiar with the exact words, I could still see that T*lcers always tended to only focus on the moments that could be interpreted as johnlock, and conveniently ignore the ones that contradicted their theories.

An example of this: Why did Sherlock never change his personalised moaning text alert that was set up by Irene on his phone? It even shows up in TLD, why?

I was looking for meta posts that might specifically give me the answer to this question. A T*LC explanation for this. Turns out I didn't find anything.

Because deep down even they know that this isn't exactly a johnlock element in the show. This element is actually about adl*ck.

Like I said, I do ship johnlock, and I'm not even a multi-shipper usually. Adl*ck is literally my NOTP, but facts are facts, aren't they?

This show does not support just one ship involving the title character, but rather it supports multiple of them. Johnlock is just one of those ships. It definitely isn't the only possible explanation for this entire show.

T*lc believers couldn't ever give a johnlock explanation to that thing, so they decided to ignore that altogether, and only focus on how jealous John feels when he hears that tone in the show.

Or, contrarily, they would actively twist every single scene to make it look like a johnlock scene in their meta posts. Which leads me to talk about the next logical fallacy.

2.) Confirmation bias:

Confirmation bias is the tendency to seek out and prefer information that supports our preexisting beliefs.

These people saw johnlock in the show (naturally), but then they stretched it so far that johnlock became the main plot of the show eventually in their eyes. Every single scene somehow became all about johnlock to them.

This logical fallacy is the main one and can be found in almost any t*lc meta post.

An example: You guys must've seen posts floating around in this fashion on Tumblr: "If t*lc isn't real, then why..." or "if not johnlock, then what?".

Look at this post and this famous video so you'll get my point easily.

That's confirmation bias. The whole show does not become all about johnlock just because certain scenes from many episodes support the ship. Johnlock is just one interpretation among many in this show.

Besides, this is a Sherlock Holmes adaptation. This is about the most famous detective in fiction. Cases and the individual characterisations (devoid of any shipping biases) will always take the first priority. That's what the general audience - or "casuals" as t*lcers like to call them in a condescending way - is here for.

(Side note but "casuals" are the most important part of the audience in almost any fandom. What those people pick up on usually tends to be the authorial intent. Writers need their hardwork to come across to most people in their audience. They're not writing a show for just a few "special' people on Tumblr.)

This show becomes 100% johnlocky only through confirmation bias.

In response to this fallacy, I love to quote these lines by Sherlock Holmes from A Study in Scarlet (by Arthur Conan Doyle) :

Data! Data! Data! I cannot make bricks without clay.

It is a capital mistake to theorize before one has data. Insensibly one begins to twist facts to suit theories, instead of theories to suit facts.

3.) Backward reasoning: Closely connected to confirmation bias.

Backward logic or reasoning is a type of thinking that involves working from the end result to find the best solution.

It's not possible for me to state a specific example here. 90% of any T*LC meta starts with a pre-defined conclusion "Because Johnlock!" and then the rest of the analysis is written accordingly.

The biggest problem with this fallacy in the context of t*lc is that any complexity or nuance gets lost in the process. Or on the contrary, these people overcomplicate everything according to their own convenience. Anything as long as they get to the pre-defined conclusion "because johnlock" at the end.

Ok, here's an example, anyway: Irene Adler said she was gay in the Battersea Power station scene. Therefore we'll bend over backwards trying to prove how totally not in love with Sherlock she was.

Never mind the fact that some gay people can develop feelings for the opposite gender sometimes. Sexuality can be fluid for some people.

Also, this episode was written by Steven Moffat, who has been extremely ignorant and insensitive about marginalised people in his interviews in the past. What do you expect?

Her phone's password was "I am SHERlocked". Her last wish was to send a goodbye text to him when she was about to get executed in Karachi. Take a wild guess.

4.) The Black and White fallacy : Self-explanatory.

Black and white thinking is a thought pattern that makes people think in absolutes.

This isn't limited to just the t*lc side of the fandom. Many people, regardless of what they ship are responsible for this.

Example : Moriarty is a "psychopath" so it's absolutely impossible for him to have any real feelings for Sherlock.

This when Moriarty's life has always revolved all around Sherlock ever since Sherlock solved Carl Powers' case when they were both teens.

Just because a character is a villain and abusive towards the main character, it doesn't necessarily mean he's incapable of human emotions. It's not always like this.

Also, ask yourself, why would the abuser in the relationship try every way they know to keep their victim with them? The abuser's real sentiment for the victim is the major reason.

Not condoning abuse or being a Moriarty apologetic here lol. Just saying that his own feelings for Sherlock don't disappear just because this ship is unhealthy.

Also, terms like "psychopath" and "sociopath" have become obsolete for ages now. ASPD is the correct word. Use it. We need to stop throwing around big words we don't even know the meanings of.

5.) Hasty Generalisation:

A hasty generalization fallacy is a claim made on the basis of insufficient evidence or a few examples.

Example:

Mycroft: Oh, Sherlock. What do we say about co-incidences?

Sherlock: The universe is rarely so lazy.

Hoo boy. The way this line got repeated ad nauseam (still does)!

When I was ranting about this line and the fans' attitude towards it to Kim, they said, "The universe is in fact very lazy."

So true, isn't it? There's a reason every phenomenon in the universe, from largest to microscopic, tends towards stability.

In relation to this, not every single event is going to be tied to a specific, neat little narrative in the universe. Entropy is a thing.

Because of this line "The universe is rarely so lazy," any continuity/production error is considered intentional and "clever" (God I hate this word now) by these people. The writers keep getting undeserved credit. There's a reason some people still believe S-4 is fake because it was badly written on purpose.

And this is just one example of the bad things this fallacy has done. Don't even get me started on the symbolisms. (I'm getting there, just wait.)

Here's my response to "the universe is rarely so lazy" then.

6.) Bandwagon:

Meaning: Majority of the people believe in this thing, therefore it must be true.

Example: This isn't really specific, but how often have you seen t*lcers just repeat each others' words/statements verbatim? Too often in my experience. Half of the time they don't even seem to think about anything related to the show for themselves. They just seem to be parroting each other.

Ok, have an example then. "Sherlock is such a gay baby bottom twink! 😍"

Not only is this factually wrong, because he's a fully functional grown man, but it's also incredibly fetishistic. Stop fetishising queer people.

Have this in my response:

7.) Ad hominem:

You attacked your opponent's character or personal traits in order to undermine their argument.

How many times have these people falsely accused others of homophobia in response to any kind of criticism? Even if it was constructive.

I've actually seen a bnf say, "People only asked so many questions or expressed so many doubts about t*lc because this theory was about a queer relationship, and the possibility of it becoming canon."

Seriously? So is everyone just supposed to turn their brains off and believe in literally anything you say just because?

You even used to get accused of homophobia if you dared to headcanon Sherlock as asexual or even aro/ace. And these people used to claim they cared about queer representation. LOL.

"Mark Gatiss is secretly straight because he didn't make johnlock canon."

"Sarah Z, the youtuber, is homophobic because how dare she question the sacred t*lc in her youtube video about us?!"

8.) The straw man:

A straw man fallacy occurs when someone distorts or exaggerates another person’s argument, and then attacks the distorted version of the argument instead of genuinely engaging.

Anyone who ships either Sherlock or John with any other character apart from each other (particularly if it's a female character either of them are being shipped with) is characterised weirdly in t*lcer's posts.

"You're so heteronormative if you ship Sherl0lly!"

Even if the said Sherl0lly shipper goes ahead to clarify that they're also queer, and that they headcanon both of those characters in that ship as queer in the show.

You get accused of homophobia for headcanoning Sherlock as bisexual! This comes from the same people who insist John is bi in canon.

Well, something tells me that these people just h/c John as bi to make this ship work.

These were some of the few logical fallacies Kim and I could think of when were talking about the meta posts or even general shitposts by these people. I know there are a lot more than these and this is just scratching the surface.

Well, if most of your posts are just filled with fallacious arguments in an attempt to support your theory, your theory might not be as strong as you think.

Lily Orchard’s Takes on Hunter are garbage and here’s why [The Owl House]

I decided to remake this post because there were some things I wanted to add in or change about the original post (and because no one saw the original post lol). So...let’s just get this over with.

I'm just gonna cut to the chase; The Owl House is a fantastic show and I think LO's takes on one of the characters in the series are poorly thought out or just not true and here's why. For those who (somehow) don't know; Lily Orchard is a youtuber who makes video essays on cartoons, she's also probably the most controversial youtube critic I've seen. I'm not gonna cover much of the drama that Lily's been involved in, but I felt like that was worth mentioning. The Owl House is a show that Lily covers quite a bit on her channel, but she has a very certain dislike of one particular character in it; Hunter. I decided to make this post for two reasons; 1) I don't see many people debunking Lily's arguments about Hunter outside of some asks on LO gossip blogs on Tumblr and 2) I really like Hunter. He's probably my second favorite of the main characters right below Luz for me, and I wanted to make this post after finishing the show because...

Lily's arguments about Hunter aren't very good. They are filled with Lily constantly making poorly thought out and false arguments about Hunter that could be easily disproven if you actually watch the show. So I'm gonna cover some of Lily's points about Hunter and why they are false. This post is going to cover some of Lily's major arguments criticizing Hunter and why I disagree with them. Let's begin.

"Hunter Is a Passive Character"

I'll just take this piece of text from a really good article I've found about passive characters right here:

"These characters have goals — from as small as a glass of water to as big as saving the world — and their determination to achieve those goals creates the stakes of the story. Passive characters are, naturally, the opposite. They wait for things to happen instead of making them happen. They’re reactive, not proactive. Whereas active characters impact the story, passive characters sit back and experience the story." -WHY YOU SHOULD AVOID WRITING PASSIVE CHARACTERS (& HOW TO MAKE THEM ACTIVE)

As the text says, a passive character is a character that doesn't contribute to the story in any meaningful way and simply sits back, and watches the story as it goes, often waiting for things to happen instead of making them happen. It's important to define what a passive character is to illustrate my point; that being, Hunter is not a passive character, which is what Lily accuses him of being. To take some quotes from Lily's video on Hunter:

"Hunter's character has been passive from his first appearance, even when he had the trash boy Vanitas vibe going for him. He shows up, does nothing, refuses to elaborate and leaves."

"Typically passive characters aren't a good thing to give this kind of screen time to because the majority of that time will be spent watching them hem and haw and drag their feet. This was the problem with Hollow Mind. It doesn't go through much information that's new to the viewer, and indeed that new information is kept to the background paintings. And that's because 90% of the episode is spent watching Hunter cope and seeth which grinds the story to a halt"

"Most of the time when he's actually in an episode, the story grinds to a halt while Hunter sits there and does fucking nothing and you may as well skip to act 3 because its going to go the same way the last few of them went" -Glass of Water Character Potential Doesn't Excuse Lazy Writing

Lily says that in most of the episodes centering around Hunter, he just sits there and does nothing until the episode's third act. However, this simply isn't true. Let's look at four out of the five episodes focusing on Hunter and why the things he does in those episodes don't make him passive.

S2 EP 6: Hunting Palisman: I don't have much to say about Hunter in this one. This episode basically introduces us to Hunter proper where we get to see him grow a slight friendship with Luz and him deciding to let her take the palisman instead of betraying her. Don't have much to say here.

S2 EP9: Eclipse Lake - This is an example of Hunter pushing the plot forward and him not being a passive character. Here, he disguises himself as a coven scout to go to the expedition led by Kikimora searching for Titan blood in eclipse lake so he could prove himself to be useful to Belos after he says that Hunter is "replaceable". Later in the episode, he gets the Titan blood key and gives it to Belos. This is an example of Hunter being an active character; he pushes the plot forward and contributes to it, which is important because passive characters don't do that; rather, they wait for the plot to happen and react to it rather than actually making the plot happen.

S2 EP 13: Any Sport in a Storm - Now this is where Lily's points about Hunter being "passive" really begin to show their cracks. In this episode, Hunter goes to find recruits for the emperor's coven after being "ordered" by Darius to do, so he could, like in the last episode, prove his worth to the emperor's coven. Here, he joins Willow's flyer derby team and after playing a game he basically kidnaps them and makes them join the emperor's coven against their will. After realizing what he did was fucked he goes to protect them by saying their too weak for the emperor's coven, giving them a chance to escape. Hunter, like in the last episode, is not only an active character by pushing the plot forward, but he also goes through development here as he learns to make connections with people outside of the emperor's coven and is even willing to take a lethal blow from Darius to and sacrifice his status to protect his friends. Hunter, like in his last episode, is not a passive character.

S2 EP16 Hollow Mind - Hey, did you know that Lily thinks Hollow Mind is the worst episode of the show and thinks it's a 1/10? I could cover how bad Lily's takes on this episode are but someone already did make a video on that so I won't touch on her other takes about the episode here, but it's clear from the last quote that Lily misses the point of the episode. In this episode, Hunter gets trapped with Luz inside of Belos's mind and they end up seeing Belos's memories, which challenge Hunter's entire worldview. The episode shows how much Hunter was manipulated by Belos, as he believes that Belos has done nothing wrong and that he is making Hunter do the right thing. As the episode goes on however, and he and Luz begin seeing Belos's memories, Hunter ends up being in denial that Belos is actually evil, making excuses for what he did in those memories, with this line after Hunter and Luz see what the sigils actually do standing out to me;

Luz: You can't deny it now. Belos is trying to hurt people!

Hunter: He was just... perfecting sigil magic! Besides, maybe, he's remembering things wrong. Who knows how mindscapes work?

Luz: I thought you did!

Hunter: Well, maybe I'm an idiot!

Hunter was raised to think that emperor Belos was doing a good thing, and that he loves him. All of that comes crashing down when It's revealed that Belos has killed previous Golden Guards, and the episode ends with breaking from Belos's control and realizing that he was being used and manipulated all along with his whole world turning upside down. This episode has Hunter learn the truth about Belos and shows how much Belos warped his worldview into believing he was doing the right thing. That's the point of Hollow Mind; It's about Hunter realizing that Belos has lied to him this whole time and breaking free from his abusive "uncle". The fact that Lily just labels this episode as another one where he "waffles around about whether to do the right thing again" is just missing the point. Again, he's been lied to his whole life, it's gonna take a lot for him to see the truth.

S2 EP18 Labyrinth Runners - I don't have much to say about this one, but Hunter does still grow as a character here. In the episode, Adrian (The head of the illusionist coven) tries to get the students of Hexside to get sigils for the day of unity, and Gus ends up creating a giant illusion that covers the entire school making many students (and teachers) get lost in the illusion. Before that, It's revealed that after the events of Hollow Mind, Hunter has gone under hiding from Belos and went to Hexside to crash in. Like the previous episodes, this episode has Hunter grow as a character, with him overcoming his trust issues with Gus, but he also saves Gus from Adrian. This is another episode where Hunter grows as a character and actively pushes the plot forward.

So, as we've seen through all of these episodes, Hunter is not a passive character, unlike what Ms Orchard over here would like to tell you. He doesn't spend most of his episodes focusing on him sitting around doing nothing; In all of the episodes he's in he is either actively pushing the plot forward or growing and developing as a character. Lemme take another piece of text from that article I previously mentioned;

These characters have goals — from as small as a glass of water to as big as saving the world — and their determination to achieve those goals creates the stakes of the story. - WHY YOU SHOULD AVOID WRITING PASSIVE CHARACTERS (& HOW TO MAKE THEM ACTIVE)

Hunter starts out as a character that has a goal; that being proving himself worthy to the emperor's coven, and we see him try to work for that goal in S2 EP9 and S2 EP13. So, Hunter is not a passive character, he's a character who either pushes the story forward or is actively growing and developing, unlike what Lily would like to tell you.

And here’s another thing; notice how Lily never sites any examples to her point where she says this:

“The same as the last few of them went”, Lily, please explain how each of Hunter’s episodes go if you’re going to make this claim. Hunter’s episodes don’t have the same structure copied and pasted throughout, if you actually watch them you would know this. I know Lily watched these episodes, so where is she getting this from?

"Hunter is Stapled onto Other Characters"

This is another common complaint Lily has with Hunter, that being he is "stapled" onto other characters in his episodes and that he often overshadows them. I'm just gonna cut to the chase; wtf does this even mean? Lily doesn't specify what she means by Hunter being "stapled" onto other characters nor why it's a bad thing, if anything all she is describing here is Hunter interacting with other characters in his episodes. However, there is another side to this argument that Lily has, that being that she thinks that Hunter overshadows other characters, mainly Willow and Gus, and that they get pushed to the side for the sake of his arc, and that Hunter takes up too much screen time.

The issue with this point is that Hunter really doesn't overshadow other characters as much as Lily says he does. For Gus in particular in Labyrinth Runners he isn’t pushed to the side in favor of Hunter like how Lily says he is; the episode shows both of them working through their trust issues. Hunter isn’t being “stapled” onto Gus here just so he could overshadow him, both characters support each other’s arcs and help them grow. It really feels like Lily hates Hunter for just...being in an episode, regardless of the reason. As for Willow, I don’t think Hunter overshadowed her much either. That being said, I always found Willow to be an underdeveloped character to begin with so maybe that’s why, but like Gus she also does support Hunter’s arc and helps him grow.

She even sometimes says that Hunter is just shoved into an episode for no reason other than Dana apparently liking him a lot which...also no, Hunter is not shoved into an episode for no reason, in his episodes he is interacting with other characters and growing because of them.

So yes, Hunter is stapled onto other characters....why is that a bad thing tho? He’s just interacting with other characters in the show, what’s wrong with that? Why is a character interacting with other characters bad? Like, in her TOH season 2 round up video, one of the cons for the episode Hollow Mind is “Golden Guard is stapled onto Luz to inflate his importance”...so she’ll just list Hunter being there or interacting with the characters as something wrong with an episode...ya. If that’s not another really bad point I don’t know what is.

"Hunter is a superfluous character"

This section is going to be shorter than the other two mainly because this was partially responded to in the first section, but it was a big enough criticism for Hunter that Lily has so it's worth giving its own section to. So anyways, Lily often says that Hunter is an unnecessary character and that you could remove him from the story and nothing would change. This, like Lily's other points about Hunter, isn't true. Aside from how, like I mentioned earlier, Hunter has a connection to Belos, the main antagonist of the series, he makes major contributions to the plot outside of that. He's the one to give the titan blood key to Belos, he saves Gus from the illusionist, he discusses what is going to happen on the day of unity with the other students at Hexside, and he's the one to get possessed by Belos. So no, Hunter is not an unnecessary character, he's a character that makes contributions to the plot , and major ones at that.

Conclusion

So, that was my mini-essay on why I disagree with Lily's points on Hunter. I had never made a post as big as this one before, but hey, at least I get satisfaction out of defending one of my favorite characters in a show that I like from someone who clearly misunderstands it. So ya...bye

Hello! I'm pretty certain she deleted her tumblr. I don't know the exact reason but I'm sure she knew what she was doing and looking out for her best interests. It is always a bummer when a writer you love suddenly disappears and takes their works with them but, sadly, that is the nature of the internet. If you're looking for something softer, highhhllyyy recommend A Lord and A Lady. It is a Bridgerton AU but I think it could read just fine as a period piece even if you don't know the show/story. It's soft and lovely and Cait captures the time period so perfectly that it makes me feel like I'm watching an episode before my eyes. It's unfished but I have secret, behind the scenes, knowledge and she's currently working on the story again after taking a much needed break from writing. Everything she has showed me so far is amazing.

I have not read as many of their works as I would like to but it's on my list of things to do. I recently read Of Enemies and Indestructible Girlfriends and was in awe. I could not stop reading. The humor mixed with the emotions mixed with the action scenes were wonderfully balanced. Such talent and I feel bad for not reading as much as I would like. yeah in most cases i’m skeptical that ‘forcing headcanons’ on people is actually a thing that happens because 99% of the time that grievance could be sufficiently addressed if people would only curate their feeds so they see the content they wanna see, but this might be a legitimate example of such a thing.

it is annoying because tvtropes is a great tool for understanding the technical aspects of storytelling and getting a general overview of a show and how content-making techniques can help deliver messaging (e.g. lighting, sound, sfx, camera angles). i’ve been using it for that purpose for years and i’ve found only recently that i’ve been encountering this problem more and more.

it’s been a while since i looked at the MASH page because i’ve basically written it off, but if memory serves the character pages were pretty unreliable. it could be that people have are projecting their personal interpretations/feelings on the show (any reading will have some amount of this) but some of the reaches on there are dishonest about the text.

MASH is a show that lacks continuity and is full of gags. it is also a show from another completely different era of television and the world. without some knowledge of that time, your interpretation might be lacking. many episode titles are puns or a play on an existing piece of media from the first half of the 20th century - but you rarely see that addressed nowadays in the fandom because we’re (mostly) a different generation. there’s a difference between saying ‘radar is psychic’ and ‘a running gag on the show is that radar is psychic’ - does that mean MASH has a canonical magical realism aspect to it? no, of course not. but i sure as hell could find a way to make it seem that way to a person who has never seen it just by being a bit creative, telling half-truths and remixing things i know to be true about the show - aka, writing an AU. it’s like that “mash is haunted” post floating around on tumblr - it’s great in the format that it’s in, but on tvtropes, production flubs need to be called what they are - flubs - and not “trapper is haunting the OR” - those are the rules of engagement on TV tropes.

the rest under a this cut because i talk specifically about one of my most be-loathed myths that the MASH tv tropes page seems to want me to believe: hawkeye the “canonical” CSA/rape survivor

i say ‘let me leave shipping out of this’ a lot because i do get the sense that if i don’t give non-shippy examples of this happening that it’s valid for people to think i’m projecting a shipping bias onto my argument because a lot of fandom discourse is frankly, about shipping. so here: something I remember really rubbing me the wrong way about the MASH tv tropes page was how much it seemed to insist that Hawkeye was a CSA survivor.

i am not saying that this is not viable or that it is a bad reading or even that i disagree with it as an interpretation of the source material, but framing it like it’s an undeniable part of his character that other characters acknowledge is just - it’s not there! and if canonical portrayals of survivors are important to you, I don’t see how pretending that Hawkeye is a CSA survivor and trying to convince other people of that before they’ve even watched the show is “good representation”.

it gives way for all sorts of other misunderstandings of the show, for example, his “loose morals” around sexuality which are first and foremost about his being anti-establishment, that is something which is key to his character and tbh if you subscribe to the HC that hawkeye is a survivor of abuse then his being a scrappy, unconventional male lead who turns his nose up to traditional masculinity only enriches that HC in my opinion.

ooo okay well hmm i'm honestly not sure how helpful i'll be because when most people start streaming they're starting with 0 audience and followers. whereas i'd already been doing tumblr for years and had been doing youtube for 6 months so i already had an existing audience, some of whom came over to twitch. and i had made friends with a few streamers just by chance, i'd never considered streaming before i met these people and they inspired me, and they already had followings and gave me shoutouts so before i'd even started my first stream i had close to 50 followers and by the end of my first stream i had 50 followers (the amount you need to become a twitch affiliate). so i don't think i can give good tips on how to grow an audience because 1. i already had one prior to streaming 2. most of the followers i've continued to gain come from my youtube and patreon.

so the only tip i guess i can give for growing a following is to watch other streamers, be active in their chats, find other communities that you're comfy in and see what those streamers do, especially other small streamers, find people you're comfy with raiding, and maybe you'll make friends with some of these streamers (though no streamer owes you friendship just because you are active in their streams or raid them or whatever).

i don't know if you're wanting to face-cam stream or be a vtuber. i can't give any face-cam advice, but as for vtubing: don't let anyone make you believe you have to spend loads of money. there's models you can buy pre-made that you can start out with, you could try and make your own. you don't have to have a 3d or live2d model, and you never have to 'upgrade' to one. i hate this idea of 'you start with a png and then you upgrade eventually' because no, you don't have to. and a png is not lesser quality or a 'downgrade' compared to other models, it's just different. i personally have never liked 3d animation and thus also don't like hoe 3d and live2d models look, so i plan on always remaining a png/gif tuber (actually i want to change my model to 2d animated but there's not a name for that as i've never seen anyone else do that before i guess people would call it a giftuber?). there's so many assets you can get on etsy or ko-fi for free or for cheap, you don't need to spend 5k on a custom vtuber model. i didn't spend any money setting up streaming as the programs i use are free and i'm an artist so i made my overlay, model, alert animations, emotes and twitch bio banners all myself.

and then in terms of what i use for streaming

OBS Studio to stream.

veadotube for my png model that makes it react to when i talk.

streamelements to host my overlays in so i have scrolling text that shows latest followers, animations i made that pop up when i get new followers and subs and bits etc, custom chat commands so that eg when i type !shop a bot in chat posts my shop link, you can also have timers set so every 1 hour a bot in chat posts a link to my socials.

sidekick (previously called clippy) lets you add shoutout and clip commands so that when i type !so followed by someone's username a clip from their channel will pop up and play on my stream, and !watch followed by a link to one of my own clips to make my own clips play on stream.

triggerfyre for sounds and visual redeems, you can connect triggerfyre to your channel point redeems so that when someone redeems something a certain sound plays (almost all of mine now play astarion voice lines), or visual things like when someone redeems heatpats a gif of a hand patting appears on my head.

serybot as an extra security precaution, helps keep bots and hate raids out.

streamersonglist for karaoke streams, it lets people request songs and add them to a queue.

reactive by fugitech for collab streams, it allows you to have a friends png model appear on your stream while they're in a discord call with you, and it lights up or moves when they talk.

i no longer use sound alerts as i get jumpscared by them too easily, but sound alerts is an extension that lets people redeem or pay bits to play sounds in your stream.

OBS Closed Captioning Plugin which allows people to turn on closed captions on my streams, these captions are automatic and generated in real time so it's as accurate as it can be.

i think that's everything, and i figured out how to learn all of these things from youtube tutorials. it's basically been woah that thing on someone else's stream looks cool i wonder how they did that i wanna do that do.

overall though its cheesy, just have fun with it. don't go into it expecting it to be your new main source of income, very few can make streaming work for them like that. streaming for me was a way to try and promote my other socials and because i wanted to be part of this community of new friends i'd found and i continue to do it as it's massively raised my confidence. i'm quite and shy and still am irl, but on stream without face-cam i find myself able to talk to people and practise socialising.

that was long, i hope it was at least helpful, and i'm always fine answering questions about how i do anything on stream or how twitch works etc.

Hey, you want some bonus content for Chapter 13 of this could be permanent, you know (my Renruki Tattoo Artist AU fanfic)

I don’t exactly remember why I felt like I needed to have them go to the opera, I think it was literally all built around the scene where Byakuya walks them through trying to tie a bow tie. In any case, it took me one million years to pick out all the outfits, and I thought you might like to look at some of the pictures.

First, big ups to the lastnightatthemet Instagram account, where you can see what actual people wear to the opera. It is both an inspiration and a delight, and I think you will find that the outfits I came up with are not even all that wild in comparison.

Here’s Renji’s beloved smoking jacket, which Tumblr then proceeded to give me ads for the next month. This is pretty much exactly how it is.

Here it is as a full outfit. Some of the details here are a little more modern, but this is the general look.

I spent a ton of time looking for outfit refs for Rukia. I found a lot of things I liked *aspects of* (here are some examples), but then I just ended up smashing them together.

This is the sketch I finally came up with (left). @fluffnflightillustrations helped me refine it into something that looked actually good (on the right). Thanks, Fluff!

The coat is question is a cocoon coat, or more specifically, a Poiret cocoon coat.

Here’s Phyrne Fisher, from Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries in something similar. (If you haven’t watched Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries, and you love gasping at outfits, I cannot recommend it highly enough. It’s also a really, really good show on top of have a fantastic aesthetic)

I never got around to mentioning this in the text because it was too much of a deep dive, but the look I was going for was very specifically an Edward Gorey Mystery! look. You might know Gorey from The Gashlycrumb Tinies, but he was a really cool dude overall. He’s one of my favorite artists (I visited his house on my honeymoon!), and in my mind, he is one of Renji’s major artistic style influences, along with Mike Mignola of Hellboy fame.

This already very long, but there was one other note I wanted to make about the last chapter:

I’ve mentioned before that the delight of an AU-- especially when you are an author who writes a lot of canon-compliant fic-- is when you tease out some essential difference in character because of the circumstances and hits you like a brick in the face.

I have probably written a literal one million words of fanfiction about Rukia and Renji and Byakuya and the only time I have written Rukia and Byakuya saying “I love you” to one another is in a piece of unpublished, post-TYBW ephemera, where Renji finally beats Byakuya in a spar and asks for his permission to date Rukia, and then Byakuya asks Rukia what she thinks about that. ONE. MILLION. WORDS.

Anyway, there’s an absolutely unremarkable bit in this chapter where Rukia and Byakuya say good-bye to each other on the phone and throw in an “I love you” for good measure and I think this is the first time I have ever teared up while writing.

not helpful for people who do not have a library nearby but if you do, please consider getting a library card. i got one impulsively after seeing a tumblr post like this one (lol). library cards are free, and once you have one, you gain access not only to physical books, but movies, TV shows, video games, and of course, digital books.

mine, personally, is connected to every other library in the county, so there is a HUGE online catalog. just massive. you can go to any of these libraries in person, or you can request a book from one library and have it delivered to your local one to go pick it up. and it’s free! all of it is free!

having a library card and checking out items helps your local library and the surrounding community. and if you have items you’re willing/able to donate, you can make those materials accessible for the other people in your region.

now i know some people will be like “but jay, I don’t read books, and I can just pirate stuff, or play the games I already have access to. why library?”

but here’s the thing. I had not read for fun since I was a child. i hated reading books. i’d space out constantly. it physically hurt to hold a book in my hands (neck and wrist pain). and a kindle wasn’t any better.

so what i did was, first of all, was pick a subject that interested me. i’m a gay trans man, and I’ve always felt alienated by being surrounded by cishet-heavy media, and I also wanted to learn more about my community’s past. so I was going to be looking at fiction and non-fiction books in the LGBT category.

then i picked the genre. reading poetry, which is small, digestible bites of text, and graphic novels, which are image-heavy, would help ease me back into reading. a warm-up for longer pieces.

then format. I wanted to have a physical book in my hands. having a physical book taking up space would remind me that I had to read it and return it.

but physical books were hard! so I bought two adaptive devices that, when used together, greatly reduced the amount of pain i was in while reading. i’ve spoken about them before

i also got myself a set of magnetic bookmarks. i find that these are the most useful, as they remain fixed to the page and aren’t clunky. and also, when not in use, you can stick them to a fridge or another metal surface

once I had all of that figured out, I looked for specific books, read reviews, and organized the content into lists. one for poems, one for graphic novels, one for non-fiction, one for fiction.

i started out with two poetry books and the first volume (out of four) of a manga. I found that I took to reading pretty quickly, and I enjoyed the experience even when I wasn’t fond of the content. one poetry book left me making a lot of commentary, out loud, as one would when watching a bad movie. and weirdly enough? i had fun doing this. the other poetry book, though, made me burst into tears, in a good way.

once i knew I could handle reading, I just... dove right in. I’m 20% of the way through a 550 page fiction novel right now. if you told me a couple of months ago I’d be doing that, I’d look at you like you had five heads. i have a spotify playlist with instrumental music i listen to help set the scene, just as one would when playing DND, and this helps me block out the outside world and keep focus, so that helps substantially.

this book is not a library book, however, so I am taking a break from it to read the two library books i have at the moment: a history book and a manga volume. when i am finished reading the novel, i plan to donate it to the library. i also plan to do the same thing with other gaps in my library’s catalog. buy the book, read it, donate it.

anyway, give the library a try, if you can. especially if you’re marginalized in any way. hell, i have found 4 separate books JUST on the intersection of being trans and autistic. you may not find everything you are looking for, but you may find something that makes you feel less alone in the world, something that resonates with you

2022 Fanfic Year in Review: shoshiwrites on AO3

Total Completed Works: 4.

Word Count: 18,081 - strictly from completed works on Ao3; 51,511 including posted Tumblr fics and prompts. Not even trying to count unpublished/rewrite work because (a) that's not what this meme is about and (b) it's too hard to tally.

Fandoms I’ve Written In: What kind of a question is this.

Looking Back, Did You Write More Fic Than You Thought You Would This Year, Less, Or About What You’d Expected?: Less but also more? Life has been A Lot this year in several ways. I thought I'd make more linear progress on the rewrite, but what actually ended up happening was some writing for one timeline, deciding to start the story in a different place, and then through some thinking and convos with friends I ended up figuring out I needed to start the story in a different different place plot-wise. I'm really happy with this realization and this new starting point, even if it means scrapping what I have, at least for now. And in the meantime, I continued with my usual AU parade and lots of little prompts, which I'm pretty proud of all things considered.

What’s Your Own Favorite Story Of The Year?: Oh man. I have to say, for something that started as a joke, the baby AU might be it. The scene of them at the swimming hole might be one of my favorite scenes that I've ever written for them (or maybe I just listen to too much Dan Auerbach). I'm also proud of the Jo x The Darkening Sky crossover I wrote for @mercurygray, even if I'm still embarrassed that it will now show up at the bottom of TDS for all eternity.

Do You Have Any Fanfic Goals For The New Year?: Make progress with the new starting point with the rewrite, honestly. And just..keep writing and being creative in whatever forms that takes.

Most Popular Story Of The Year?: Hits alone, love in your eyes (the Jo x TDS crossover). But for the most part I keep my Ao3 stuff to registered users only which I imagine impacts things. Also, you know, I write mostly AUs concerning a very tiny fraction of 'canon' characters.

Story Of Mine Most Under-Appreciated By The Universe, In My Opinion: Honestly this is less of a case of under-appreciation, because my friends and mutuals and followers are more than amazing about my stuff on Tumblr, but I've been kind of mildly surprised that I haven't gotten one or two strangers wandering into my AUs on Ao3 and commenting. But again, I also don't make them very easy to find.

Most Fun Story To Write: The flower shop AU, which let me indulge all of my inner romcom tendencies (and I'm pretty proud of the texting skin I used on Ao3 tbh). Also honestly the ballerina/boxer AU, which let me indulge all of my I Watch Too Much Early Seasons of Law & Order For the Scenery tendencies.

Most Unintentionally Telling Story: Probably all of them, but the AU where they're fixing up an old house and run into some Weird Sensations feels particularly on-brand.

Biggest Disappointment: Idk if it's a disappointment exactly but the list of prompts and scenarios I wanted to but didn't write this year is (unsurprisingly) of ...medium-ish... length.

Biggest Surprise: The flower shop AU again honestly. It was an idea I'd thought about briefly maybe a year ago, and I didn't think I could really do anything with it. Surprise!
