“Need any help with the inventory?” Sylvie asked.
“I think I’m finished up,” you laughed, "you bored or something Brett?"
"I know I've only been in Chicago for a few months, but this is the first shift I've had with no-"
"I'm gonna cut you off right there before you jinx us. Those who say the 'Q' word or even think about the lack of runs is a jinx to the whole house."
"How do you know this?"
"Candidiate a few years back-"
Battalion 25, Truck 81, Engine 51, Squad 3, Ambulance 61, building fire, 723 North Wabash
"Looks like you are the new jinx, Sylvie Brett," you laughed, hopping into the passenger seat of 61, "and the jinx gets to drive."
Sylvie started the short drive to the scene, "how's it going with you and Casey?"
"Good, yeah, we're in a good place. It's weird to date someone you work with though. I'd never done that before Matt."
"Helps that your crazy schedules are synced."
"True that," you giggled, pulling up to the fire.
You hopped out of the rig and grabbed the jump bag before heading over to Boden.
"Where do you need us, Chief?" you asked.
"Two still inside, owner needs to be checked out."
As you and Sylvie tended to your victim, you could hear the commotion between truck and squad.
'Chief, I need a medic inside if you have one to spare' your radio buzzed.
"You good here?" You asked Sylvie.
"Yup, go."
You threw your bunker coat on and grabbed the jump bag.
"Medic coming in now, Casey. Where am I going?" you said, hustling towards the fire.
"I'll come get you, we're turned around in here."
You stopped and waited at the door.
"Fire is pretty much out," he announced, "follow behind me."
You followed Casey into the building and up the stairs.
"Baby, I need you to stay behind me no matter what," Matt admitted, "I don't know what hapened in here and I don't want anything to happen to you."
You nodded and followed him up the stairs to the second floor of the building.
"Victim is over here. Burns and possibly a neck injury as far as we can tell.”
“Thanks. Conscious?”
“In and out.”
You leaned down beside your victim.
“I’m a paramedic, I’m here to help you,” you introduced yourself as you undressed the victim of his jacket.
“Matt, you’re right. I’m worried about a neck injury. Grab the collar.”
Your boyfriend, now assistant, handed you your supplies.
“Help me get him out of here. It’s getting hotter in here.”
He nodded, picking up the jump bag beside him and handing it to you.
“Got him?” You asked.
He nodded and brought your victim outside.
After finding Sylvie, you loaded up the victim while Sylvie got the oxygen ready for the ride to the hospital.
——
Returning to the house after your run, you looked in the ambo’s mirror.
“Brett, did you seriously let me ride around with soot on my face?” You laughed, trying to rub it away.
You walked into the now full common room with your partner.
“So are we finally gonna convince you to take the firefighter’s test?” Herrmann asked.
“Haha, very funny Herrmann. 61’s my home, always will be.”
“I’m sure we’ll get you over here at some point,” he chuckled.
You ducked out of the common room and into the bunk room, where you peeked into Matt’s office.
“Got a minute?” You asked.
“For you? Always.”
You locked the door behind you.
“You know,” you laid down, semi-seductively, on his bed, “they way you said ‘stay behind me no matter what’ on that last call was-“
He leapt up from his chair and drew the blinds.
“Was what?” He smiled.
“I was kinda sexy,” you grinned.
“Oh yeah?” He leaned in for a kiss.
“Yeah.”
“You know what else is sexy?” He broke the kiss for a moment, “you with all that soot on your face.”
“I guess we should do something about these feelings then, huh Matt Casey?”
“I think you might be right.”

It's just a headache
Tumblr media
Prompt: “Sorry, I’m… I’m really dizzy.”
Pairing: Matt Casey x reader (Gabby never dated Matt)
Genre: hurt/comfort? fluff
Word count: 1K
You'd woken up feeling a little under the weather, slightly nauseated with a dry throat. Some water and toast had alleviated the feeling however, and you had thought nothing of it, as it was a somewhat common occurrence. Matt had some construction business he'd needed to conduct and as such had already left before you'd awoken from your slightly moderate sleep in. Unfortunately this meant you would have to drive yourself to the firehouse for once, something you hadn't had to do since your transfer into Gabby's old spot on ambo 61.
You are almost to the firehouse when your headache returns with a vengeance. By the time you do park and have made it to your locker, the pounding had become a little unbearable. Cruz is the one that spots you throwing back aspirin like your life depends on it, and though you insist you are fine you know he'll immediately snitch to your partner.
Not even five minutes pass before Matt has all but pulled you into his office with a furrowed brow. Both his hands have reached out to clutch at your face as he sits you down on the mattress, even as you continue to insist that you're fine.
"Babe seriously, I'm fine. It's just a headache" you roll your eyes, even if you can't stop the smile that adorns your face at his worry. Still, he doesn't quite relent and pulls out what he must think are the big guns.
"I'm sure the chief won't mind letting you take the shift off, not if you aren't up to working today." He is interrupted by the blaring overhead siren announcing that your presence was needed alongside Sylvie's for a call. With one last reassuring kiss you depart, promising to keep him updated on your condition.
You don't speak much on the ride, and it only takes Sylvie one look to understand that something is wrong. She's too polite to outright say that you look like shit, but the message is apparent all the same. Luckily the call isn't too much trouble, a simple fracture that doesn't even require the sirens. A prospect you are unendingly grateful for, as the dull throb had escalated furiously, leaving you to rest your cheek against the cool window in hopes of some relief.
The entire ride home is spent in silence, your partner throwing you concerned glances with increasing frequency that you don't notice through the pain. By the time you make it back, Sylvie is hovering anxiously as she slowly leads you back inside, hands prepared to catch you should you fall.
Naturally, your slow amble through the station catches the attention of the entire house. The scraping of chairs being pushed out and worried voices overlapping grates harshly on your ears and you let out a pitiful groan of annoyance to announce your displeasure.
Matt meets you in the middle of your quest to your bunk, having left his office to assess the commotion. You pay his worry no mind, shrugging off the gentle grasp he has on your arm.
"I know, I know" you whine, unwilling to listen to the 'I told you so's', "you can scold me later, but right now I just wanna sleep." At your admission, Matt once again gently took a hold of your arm and led you towards his office. Depositing you on the mattress, he pressed a kiss to your forehead, promising to take you home after he'd spoken to the chief. You can't do much more than offer a hum of acknowledgement before you are burrowing your face into his pillow. It smells of him, and that is enough to bring you some comfort through the pain.
You don't get to rest for long before Matt is by your side once more, gently manoeuvering you to your feet with such care it brings tears to your eyes. You only make it a few steps before a new problem presents itself and causes you to stumble. It is only the presence of your vigilant boyfriend that stops you from hitting the floor.
"Sorry, I'm... I'm really dizzy" you whisper in apology as Matt is forced to bear the brunt of your entire body weight. You think he might have replied after that but the ringing in your ears drowns it out completely. Vaguely you think you may have heard your name being called but the ringing in your ears drowns it out, just as your legs buckle and vision blackens.
Tumblr media
It is the repetitive beeping of monitors that helps to rouse you from your involuntary slumber. Fluorescent lighting assaults your eyes behind heavy lids. Moving takes more effort than you would have liked, but eventually you manage to sit yourself up.
Unfortunately that is the exact moment Matt walls back into the room, eyes widening as he rushed to your side and attempted to lay you back down.
“Matt, quit it. I feel fine. I mean it this time” you tacked on the end, having sensed his displeasure through his silence. “Why am I even in the hospital anyway?”
“Why are you- You lost consciousness that’s why!” He yelled, though you knew it was only worry that had caused him to raise his voice.
“Hey, hey” you gently chided, taking his hands in yours. “I’m ok. There are so many reasons I could have fainted, and the fact I’m not in the ICU proves it’s nothing serious. Whatever the problem, if there is one, we’ll get through it together.” You finish your statement by bringing the back of his hand to your lips, running your fingers along his knuckles in comforting motions.
He doesn’t relax all the way, you know he won’t until the doctors give you a clean bill of health, but he calms down enough to offer you a smile.
“So, how much did everyone freak out when I went down?” You asked cheekily, laughing at the fond eye roll you received in return. Even if it turned out you weren’t fine, Matt would be with you every step of the way.

Better
Pairing: Matt Casey x Reader
Requested: yes, by @afriendlyneighborhoodhufflepuff
Summary: After a particularly bad day, Matt is there to help.
Tumblr media
Word Count: 751
Warnings: none
A/N: To my wonderful Harm, I hope you like this! This is kind of a in-between length but still too long for a drabble so here's a short one-shot!
MATT CASEY MASTERLIST
Tumblr media
“Babe?”
Matt’s voice traveled into the apartment the both of you now shared, his voice going up a little in concern by the silence that greeted him so he looked back up at the clock on the wall.
Matt was later than he’d planned. He was supposed to have been back at least an hour ago but he’d been delayed by the construction project he was working on. But even when he was late, you never got mad enough that you’d ignore him walking through the door.
You sat up from the couch when you heard his voice, sweeping your palm across your cheek to try to swipe off any traces of what you’d been doing curled up on the couch but you knew it was useless. Matt took one look at your face and your eyes that were still a little red, a frown forming on his face.
“Baby? What’s wrong?”
You shook your head, trying a smile which felt insincere even though you couldn’t see yourself.
Matt moved forward, dropping whatever he was carrying right in the middle of the floor and heading towards you to wrap you into his arms without saying anything.
“I’m fine.” You protested weakly, even though you felt the tears bubble up to the surface again as Matt made contact with you, his arms slinging over your body and pushing you against him reassuringly.
You felt Matt lean in closer and you gave a small sigh against him, looping your arms around his torso, fitting yourself into where you knew you fit perfectly.
“Ready to talk?” Matt asked after a moment.
You knew from the moment Matt’s expression changed when he caught sight of you that you couldn’t avoid it anyway but that didn’t stop you from trying. “Dinner’s getting cold.” You tried changing the subject but Matt was having none of it.
“Y/N.”
You sighed, finally pulling out from his embrace just a little so you could look up at him, before you nodded.
The both of you climbed onto the couch, Matt resting his arm along the back of the couch while you sat cross-legged facing him, just a little gap between the both of you.
You looked down now, playing with your fingers as you recounted what had happened that day at work - how the project you’d been working on had finally been starting to look up and how the moment there was a breakthrough your colleague had swooped in to take all the credit. And as if that wasn’t enough, you’d stopped her from making a huge mistake but somehow you found yourself taking the blame for the close shave.
The anger mixed in with the unjust feelings of being blamed for something that had nothing to do with you, and you felt the prick of angry tears once again.
“I mean, if it was my mistake, fine. I’d have owned up to it and I’d take the responsibility for it, but this is…”
“A whole load of crap.” Matt finished your sentence for you, reaching in to cup the side of your face and swiping away the tear that was streaking down your cheek now.
You glanced up at him. “Nothing new, just me trusting the wrong people again.” You let out a sigh.
Matt scooted closer, pulling an arm around you and gently pulling you into his chest once again. “And that’s on them. Not you.”
“I know.” You whispered. “I just hate feeling this way.”
Matt pressed a kiss to the top of your head. “I’m sorry, baby.”
You shook your head, readjusting yourself to a more comfortable position while remaining tucked into his embrace. “Thank you.”
You heard Matt let out a gentle hum and you smiled softly. “You do make everything better.” You whispered.
You turned your head up to look at him and Matt leaned down to press a kiss gently onto your lips. “Feeling better now that you’ve gotten it all out?”
You shook your head. “I felt better the moment you walked through that door.”
Matt smiled, pressing a small kiss just to the tip of your nose, before your stomach growled.
You closed your eyes, letting out a small groan as Matt let out a small chuckle. “Come on, let’s get some food in you.”
You pulled yourself off Matt to let him get up and he stuck his hand out towards you. You threaded your fingers through his and smiled, knowing that no matter what, things would be okay.

you had always wanted kids. there was no doubt about it. but every guy you had been with never wanted kids and they didn’t make that known till a year after you two were dating. that is, until matt and kelly came into your life.
when you three got married (you all became casey-severide), you agreed that you wouldn’t start trying for kids until at least a year into your marriage so you could enjoy married life. on your one year anniversary, while you were having a nice dinner at your house, the topic of kids came up and you said you had gotten your iud out and the minute they heard that, dinner was abandoned and kelly threw you over his shoulder and they took you upstairs.
once upstairs, you were tossed onto the bed. and matt spoke up
“are you ready for us to make you a mommy?”
“yes. i can’t wait to make you daddies”
the whole night was filled with profanities, screams, moans, and praise
“we can’t wait to make you a mommy” “daddy, please” “let me make you daddies” “these are going to look so good filled up with milk”
three months later you found out you were pregnant.

Hi! Would you please write one with Matt/Kelly/Jay x reader where the reader is walking home or something and gets attacked. Roughed up a bit maybe a concussion and like a dislocated shoulder... but she manages to get away before anything too bad happens and just runs on instinct to 51. Kelly and Matt all worried and trying to comfort her but she’s in shock. Sylvie and Violet take care of her and take her to med. Jay meets them there. Maybe with worried brother-in-law Will and a Connor appearance?
Messed with the wrong one- Matt, Kelly, and Jay
Warnings: attack briefly described, vomiting, possibly wrong medical jargon
————————————
You have always been decently independent, which is something that your boys love and hate at the same time. You enjoy doing the grocery shopping and often find yourself walking the short distance to the small neighborhood market around the corner from your shared home. Today was no different.
It was late in the afternoon. The sun was just starting to set and you were happily enjoying watching the beautiful colors change in the sky. Jay was still at work, you having been able to leave early since you finished your paper work, but Jay still had a few files left to tidy up. Your errands could have waited, but you had the time now. So, while Matt, Kelly, and Jay were all still at work, you planned on getting a head start on dinner.
You were two blocks from the market when you felt four hands grab you and drag you into a nearby ally. All your training kicked in and you fought back as hard as you could. All you could think about was getting home to your boys. You kicked and punched, having to drag yourself off the ground twice. The second time you found yourself on the ground, your head also found purchase on a brick wall. You quickly shook it off and stood, laying one guy out and dodging the other, bolting down the ally and running as fast as you could. You didn’t dare look back.
Next thing you know, you are running through the bay doors of 51 and Kelly is snatching you up in his arms. You are violently shaking, blood tricking down your neck and face. You don’t respond when Kelly talks to you, given the fact that you can’t hear him over the ringing in your ears. You notice blurred figures run past you and out of the bay doors, others running out of the firehouse to see what the commotion is all about. Matt comes to your side, but you flinch and scream when he touches you.
“Shhh. It’s okay. It’s okay. It’s just Matt.” Kelly whispers, rocking you back and forth in his arms. He isn’t sure you hear him, but you relax as you bury your face into his neck and breath in his familiar scent.
Matt doesn’t attempt to touch you again. Not yet anyways, but he thinks he understands why you screamed now. Your left arm is cradled between you and Kelly protectively, leading Matt to believe that your hurt. “Kelly. She’s hurt pretty bad.” Matt whispers, walking around you slowly to examine you with only his eyes.
Kelly nods. “I know. I know baby. Let’s sit down, yeah?” Kelly says, acknowledging Matt and guiding you to sit in his chair at the squad table.
Brett and Violet are standing at the ambo with the doors open. They are both assessing you from afar until Matt and Kelly can get you focused or give them permission to approach. Brett can tell you are slipping into shock, but she doesn’t want to make things worse, so she waits.
It doesn’t take long after Kelly gets you sitting down. His hands pushing your shoulders to lower you down has you screaming in pain. Matt steps aside and waves the medics over, allowing Kelly to keep a hold on you since he got to you first.
“Y/n? It’s Sylvie Brett. Can you hear me?” Brett asks, crouching down to find your tear filled eyes. When you nod, Brett smiles warmly at you. “Good. Good. Can you tell me what hurts?” Brett asks, not yet laying a hand on you.
You gently run your right hand over your collar bone and then touch the back of your head. When your hand comes away with blood, you start shaking harder and hyperventilating. You didn’t feel that.
“Hey. Hey. Baby. It’s okay.” Kelly soothes, taking your hands in his. He carefully wipes them off with a towel that Violet offers as Brett stands to examine your head wound.
“Pretty deep.” Brett comments. At this point, you have lost most of the color in your face and are sweating pretty heavily. Brett can tell, without checking your vitals, that the shock is fully setting in. “Kelly. Get her loaded up. Violet, run inside and tell Boden what’s going on then drive us to med. Matt, call med and have them set up a trauma room and have x ray and CT ready upon arrival.” Brett instructs, putting her feelings as your friend aside to get you help quickly.
Everyone jumps to their tasks. Kelly scoops you up and apologizes as you cry out in pain from the movement. Brett gets in the ambo and immediately pulls out some pain killers and an Iv tray for you. She hands Kelly a towel to keep pressure on your head wound as she hooks you up. You barely flinch as the Iv is stuck in your hand, but begin to calm slightly as the meds take over.
When you stop whimpering, Brett moves to check your chest. “Y/n. I gotta look, okay? No pressing. I promise. Just gotta make sure that everything is still relatively where it’s suppose to be.” Brett said, not wanting to scare you with the fact that your bone could potentially be out of your skin or at an alarming angle or something.
You nodded, leaning your head further into Kelly’s hold as Matt finally jumped in and the ambo began moving. You groaned as the movement caused nausea to spike as your head swam. “Mmmm.” You ground out, trying to breath through the nausea.
“What’s wrong hunny?” Brett asked, pulling back from looking at your collarbone, which seemed to be in place, to look at your face. You had gone pale once again, your face scrunched up as you shakily brought a hand to your mouth. “Okay. Hang on.” Brett said, pushing Kelly forward to lean over and grab a sick bag for you. Matt immediately took it and held it under your chin so that Brett could keep examining you.
“M-Matt.” You gasped, clutching onto his wrist when he came into view. It was like you were just processing that he was even around at all.
“Shhhh. I’m here baby. Kelly and I are here.” Matt soothed, using his free hand to wipe tears from your face. “We are almost to med. We gotcha now.” Matt murmured, hating to see the pain and fear in your eyes. He wanted nothing more than to find whoever did this to you and lay into them, but you were his first priority.
Matt’s thought process was cut short when you heaved, flying forward with a scream of pain at the end of it. Kelly stood, holding your forehead in one hand and the cloth to the back of your head with his other hand. Matt held the bag around your mouth, holding one of Kelly’s arms to stop from trying to steady you or put his hand in the wrong place and hurt you more instead o comforting you.
“Brett. You gotta do something.” Kelly said, trying not to burst into tears as you threw up, screaming when you had enough air. You were shaking violently again, the pain and the vomiting causing your body to go into overdrive.
“Kelly. I can’t. We are two minutes out. I gave her enough to take the edge off, but they gotta assess her before she gets anything else on board.” Brett tried to reason, wiping tears from her own face as she attached wires to you to check your vitals. “I’m so sorry Y/n. I’m so sorry. We are getting you to med.” Brett whispered, her heart aching as she watched her friend get sick and scream while her other friends desperately tried to help.
As soon as the ambo got to Med, Conner Rhoads, Maggie, and your brother in law, Will Halstead, were pulling open the doors. Will stood slightly away, knowing he couldn’t treat you, but he also couldn’t leave you and the boys until Jay got there. Luckily, Jay had been notified by Will when he found out, so he knew his brother would be there soon.
“What do we got?” Conner asked, helping Brett get the stretcher out of the ambo as Kelly kept up, one hand still holding the cloth to your head while the other held the bag Matt had to secure it under your chin as you gagged.
“Deep head lac and suspected broken collar bone. The vomiting started about 4 minutes ago. GCS 6, 140/97, pulse 120, O2 95 on room air.” Brett spout out. “Iv in the field. Left hand. Administered 5 of Morphine to take the edge off.” Brett said, getting your sheets in her hands.
“Okay.” Conner said, “On my count. 1, 2, 3.” Conner counted, then helped transfer you onto the hospital bed. You screamed out again as they moved you, then proceeded to pass out. “She’s out. Elevate her feet. Tip the bed.” Conner instructed, following your head down as you were moved. He checked your pupils and palpitated your collarbone while you were out. “I can feel some inflammation around her collar bone on the left side. Most likely broken, but still in place. She also has a minor concussion. I’m gonna have them do an xray and CT just to make sure on both.” Conner said, standing and looking at the monitor. “Maggie, put her on 5ML of oxygen. Her stats are dropping some. Probably from the pain. Let’s go ahead with another 15 of morphine and some Zofran too.” Conner said, typing it all up pretty quickly.
You began to stir as Kelly pushed some fly away back. Conner was quick to get to you, repositioning the bed to a more comfortable position and checked your head lac. Your eyes fluttered open just as Conner was stepping back.
“Welcome back.” Connor said with a smile. “Your gonna be okay. We need to run some tests, but I think that you’ll only need a few stitches and all you’ll need is a sling to stabilize that arm while your collar bone heals.” Conner supplied, smiling as he heard Matt, Kelly, and Will sigh in relief.
You nodded, then winced. “Hurts.” You whispered, throat raw from throwing up.
Conner nodded and moved aside for Maggie. “Mags is gonna give you more morphine and some Zofran. Sound good?” Conner asked, searching your face for confirmation. When you you gave a shaky thumbs up, he smiled. “Good, I’ll check back in a bit.” Just as Conner was leaving, Jay skidded to a stop as he came barreling through the door, almost hitting Conner in his haste to get to you.
“Baby girl.” Jay breathed, patting Conner on the shoulder and going around him to get to you. He was sweating, eyes wild as he searched your body for injuries, hands and bottom lip shaking.
“J-Jay.” You immediately sobbed out. “I’m sorry. I’m so sorry.” You wailed, covering your face with your right hand.
Jay shook his head as he laid a hand on your leg. “Shhh. No baby. No. It’s okay. It’s not your fault sweet girl.” Jay soothed, rubbing your leg over the blanket. “We got them. Voight and Antonio have them. Your safe.” Jay soothed, smiling sadly at you.
“She was so smart and so brave. She ran straight into the bay doors of the fire house.” Kelly praised, kissing your forehead.
“You know your always safe with us.” Matt said, rubbing one of your feet over the blanket.
“I-I didn’t even think. I j-just ran.” You sniffed, wiping your face with the back of your arm. “I just thought a-about you guys. I-I needed to get h-home to you guys.” You murmured, tears streaking down your face again as the horrors of the event began to creep into your head.
“You’ll be home tonight sweet girl. Until then, we are here.” Jay soothed, moving forward as Maggie walked out, kissing your forehead gently. “You did so good Angel.”
“I’m home here with you guys. Wherever you are is home.” You whispered, finally relaxing as the drugs numbed the pain and the nausea. You were exhausted and you knew your boys would keep you safe, so you allowed your eyes to slip closed.

I think
“I didn’t know they were weed brownies!” And “I swear, it’s the truth!”
Would be really funny with Chicago Fire if you’d be so kind 🥰🥰🥰
Tumblr media
Matt Casey liked to think that every return he made back to Chicago was a breath of fresh air. Not that looking after the boys was difficult and he didn't enjoy it, but a reminder of his old life was often exactly what he needed in his new one. Of course, seeing you was the primary reason he came home, but his 51 family was more than a bonus.
Matt had decided to make for the station before the hotel. There were only a couple hours left of shift and he was ready for the placid atmosphere typical after twenty-two hours already on the job.
“I didn’t know they were weed brownies!"
The bounce in his step waned slightly as he let the door shut behind him. He could tell his sister's voice from a mile away, but the tone of it was one he wasn't used to.
"I swear, it’s the truth. These little kids were selling them, I thought they were sweet kids—they seriously looked like sweet kids."
“I, yeah—" There was a snort of laughter. Sylvie. "We believe you, Y/N.”
"Don’t doubt it, girl!" Stella sounded as enthusiastic as possible, but that same hint of amusement was evident in her voice.
Matt couldn't help his concern, quickening his pace and rounding the engine truck. The ambulance back doors were open, and you were sat at the edge, terror written all over your face. Stella was sat on her haunches in front of you, hands on your knees. Sylvie was on one side, a blood pressure monitor in her hands, and Violet was rummaging through a bag on the other.
Your wide eyes—wide, groggy eyes—met his the moment he made himself visible.
“Matty!” You made to jump up, but the girls stopped you before you could, blurting all kinds about slowing down and blood and heart.
Matt could tell you were on the verge of tears, could see the quivering of your lips and the watering of your already watering eyes. Quickly, he dropped his bag on the floor and rushed across to envelop you in a hug, cupping the back of your head to his chest. "Hey, there," he said. He met Stella's eyes, the captain having stood up, and mouthed a "what happened?" over your head.
Stella mouthed a simple "brownies" back, as though that answered the question perfectly. Luckily, you helped out.
“Matt, I took drugs," you spoke quietly. Matt's frown deepened.
The girls jumped to attention. "Not on purpose!" Sylvie said.
"Not on purpose," Stella confirmed. "Some douche was giving his kids weed brownies to sell outside his garage. Either that or someone got their recipes seriously mixed up. Boden’s sent CPD down there.”
You twirled a lock of your brother's hair around a finger, still clinging to him. “CPD’s gonna beat someone's ass," you said pointedly, "I paid eight dollars for those brownies.”
Violet crossed her arms over her chest. “Hey, Y/N, how many did you eat again?”
“Four.” Your voice was muffled, yiur face buried in Matt's chest, but everyone heard it.
Sylvie. "Rough."
"They were so good," you said.
There was a general silence, something concern probably should have filled, but after a moment the amusement of the situation set in, and smiles broke out.
"Can I assume she's gonna be fine?" Matt asked. He gently pulled away from you and guided you to sit back down on the truck.
Sylvie nodded, crossing her arms. "She's got an elevated heart rate and she'll be loopy for a bit longer but yeah, she'll be okay."
"What if the kids come after me?" You let your head drop against Matt's shoulder.
"What's that, sweetheart?" Matt asked.
"What if the brownie kids come back because I sent the cops on them?"
Sylvie put a fist to her mouth
"That's not gonna happen," Matt assured you, "don't worry."
Stella clapped her hands together after Kylie's voice asking for her echoed throughout the station. "Okay, crazy, I'm gonna take you off duty for the rest of shift, okay?"
You face fell. "Oh, but—can I still stay at the firehouse?"
"Probably best," Stella agreed.
Matt stood up. "Hey, Lieutenant, you need someone to fill in?"
Stella grinned, pointing a finger towards him as she backed out of the room. "Luckily for you, ex-Lieutenant, a spot just opened up. Go get a drink, Y/N, and stay where we can keep an eye on you. Hey, hey, Hermann, can you escort her into the common room? Don't leave her."
Hermann, who'd been passing by with an apple in hand, didn't have much of a choice as Matt passed his sister onto him with a kiss to your hot forehead before running off to change. Hermann took your arm in his when you went to fall.
"The hell's up with you? You sick?"
"I took drugs."
"What?"

Explosion- matt casey x reader
overview: after being called to a building collapse while searching through the rubble you find an explosive, luckily you being ex military had some idea on how to handle it. but when your husband and the rest of your team hear you say ‘clear the block’ tensions rise
trigger warning: fire, explosions, bombs, IED
prompt: ‘i’m 75% sure this won’t explode’
**
now Matthew Casey was the man you’d dreamed of, the type of man you wanted to end up with as a teenager. you both being firefighters you knew the strain the job put on you both. you were on squad and joined after leaving the military whereas your boyfriend was lieutenant of 81. matt had saved your life many times, not just at work but with your ptsd from the army.
you loved him so much, the majority of your time at the firehouse would be spent in his office joking around while he was filling out paperwork, that’s what you were doing as you laid on his bed.
“do you want to be a firefighter forever matt?” you asked, you’d thought you’d be in the army forever until you got shot and were honourably discharged luckily enough you healed better then expected and got into the fire department.
“yeah i mean this has been my life for such a long time. i love this job y/n i love this family” you smiled at his words as you got up walking over to his desk and sitting on his lap.
“i love you matt” he smiled and kissed you holding your waist tightly just as he started to deepen the kiss you were interrupted by the bells.
“Engine 51, truck 81, squad 3, ambulance 61-“ you groaned getting up as you both rushed to the trucks. building collapse. you knew this wasn’t gonna be good as you jumped in the squad truck sitting behind your lieutenant.
as you arrived on scene you were shocked seeing the rubble that used to be buildings, police were already on scene having set up triage. you got out the truck listening to your lieutenants orders. 81 and squad had to clear the rubble search for civilians so that’s what you did.
you and tony began covering the deepest part of the rubble, using all your strength you carefully moved pieces of rubble careful as what you were standing on could be unstable. you and the rest of your team called out looking for civilians, mass casualty situation you knew the paramedics would be swamped as firefighters pulled people from the rubble handing them over to triage.
it had already felt like hours when it had probably just been one, you’d only found 2 civilians and handed them over to triage to be treated multiple firefighters searching for people some even helping paramedics you looked around and couldn’t even spot half your team everyone busy and stressed looking for people.
you continued your search sweat pouring from your forehead, you didn’t have your turnout jacket on only your boots and trousers, chicago summer it was too hot for that. you kept searching finding another civilian a young woman, you carried her over to triage handing her over to any paramedic you could see, you knew she wasn’t in good shape, head injury easily a spine injury and internal bleeding. she had liquid coming from her ears blood pooling under her shirt, you watched as the paramedic shook their head and landed her with a black tag. you sighed and shook your head wiping your eyes as you turned heading back to the rubble, some people couldn’t be saved you have to fight for the people who can still be saved you told yourself heading back to the rubble.
you climbed back up into the possibly unstable rubble, passing a few firefighters on the way as you continued calling out for people and digging through the rubble your muscles aching as you lifted a few chunks of the rubble you noticed wires and you knew straight away. you very careful lifted one more piece of rubble putting it to the side when you looked back it had revealed a bomb, upon the sight your mouth went dry as you reached for your radio.
“chief boden report” you said voice shaking in your radio, you hear static then a voice.
“go for boden”
“clear the block. right now” you spoke in your radio looking away from the bomb and looking around you noticed a few of your team members look up at you from their positions having heard on the radio.
“right now! everyone get as far away from this area as you can i have a live bomb. get bomb squad here now.” you exclaimed as you watched your team jump into action.
matt heard your call over the radio and his heart dropped running over to boden, bringing his radio to his mouth.
“y/n why aren’t you moving we gotta evacuate!” casey exclaimed through the radio, you turned looking over at him.
“matt i’m pretty sure i can diffuse this okay? listen to me. i love you. get everyone to safety. you love this family i love this family keep everyone safe” his heart hurt as he listened to your words, he knew you were smart knew you were capable but diffusing a bomb one that was crushed in rubble was awful.
“no no. i’m not letting you get blown up bomb squad is 15 minutes out.”
“15 minutes is too long matt. clear the block please just listen to me” you spoke into your radio, you didn’t hear matts voice again, instead bodens.
“are you sure you can do this y/n?” boden spoke firmly into the radio.
“yeah i’m sure ex military remember chief” you smiled, you were the type of person to always make light of situations and matt loved that about you but right now right now he needed you to be safe.
you heard no response just looked over at boden and saw him nod as he and matt rushed off to clear the area, you glanced around noticing no one was now in your sight before you looked down at the bomb infront of you with a bleeping red light, you examined the wires coming from the small contraption attached to multiple explosives.
“i love you y/n be careful please” that’s all you heard through your radio, matts voice. god you loved that man.
“i’ll be okay matt, i love you too.” you raised your radio to your mouth.
“i have someone who wants to speak to you” you heard matts voice and then some static followed by jay halsteads voice. you and jay served together.
“y/n what type of bomb is it?” jay asked through the radio, you could hear the concern in your best friends voice.
“homemade IED, non military components. halstead i got this. i’m like 75% sure this won’t explode just let me do this. just keep matt well away from here” you spoke the longer you waited the longer people distracted you the more dangerous this became.
“copy” you heard, jay trusted you he knew you could do this. you were glad he was with matt. you looked down at the wires. one red, one green, one blue. you carefully looked to where the wires were connected. and pulled the blue wire disconnecting the trigger from the large explosive material strapped to the back the sweat beading on your forehead as you pulled the wire, you were good at staying calm but you felt like you were back in the military. you then pulled the red and green wire at the same time diffusing the bomb you felt a weight being lifted from your shoulders and you let out a breath you didn’t realise you were holding in as you stood up and got off the rubble, and away from the ied as quickly as possible it still wasn’t that stable. you let bomb squad take over as you rushed down the block to where the rest of your team were. you saw jay and matt stood and you ran into matts arms. he pulled you into him tightly holding you against his chest.
“you’re never doing that again” matt said holding you tightly against him, you chuckled and pulled away from him pressing a soft kiss to his lips.
“i’m alright matt, i’m okay” you whispered pulling away from the kiss, you knew matt now wouldn’t leave your side for a few days he was always like that, if something dangerous happened he couldn’t bring himself to leave your side.
“good job with that y/n glad your okay. call me later if you need anything” jay smiled and he shook your hand, he was your best friend but you were both military people, he was proud of you and you both helped each other out with the memories from war you’d both brought home.
“thank you, just fine out who did this okay?” he nodded before walking back to his team and then you walked back to yours with matt.
“well done y/l/n i think everyone owes you a drink tonight” kelly smiled shaking his hand, you laughed and thanked him. your team, matt they really meant the world to you.
you rode back to the station with matt and returned to his office, you collapsed down on his bed exhausted as you thought about the events that took place today.
“how are you feeling babe?” matt asked sitting on the edge of the bed, taking your hand in his.
“i’m good matt don’t worry, i’m just tired” you smiled tiredly it’d been a long day, you couldn’t wait until you could go home get in your warm bed and eat food with matt.
he nodded and kissed your forehead gently, you shook your head sitting up and hugging him, he hugged you back tightly.
“i love you so much y/n” he whispered in your ear you hated how bad he felt after situations like this, matt was your rock you loved him so much.
“i love you too matt”

Line: "There's nothing I hate more than what I can't have." Location: hotel room
Part 2 of my HGTV AU
You can find part 1 here.
***
Their season premiere is set for next Monday and they've had this round of daytime talk show interviews scheduled for months. Matt knew he'd be sharing a hotel room with Sylvie and had plenty of time to prepare. It would go the way it always did. He would insist she take the bed, despite all of her determination not to, and then find himself somewhere else to sleep.
Luckily, this time they were in New York for a full week and the network had sprung for a suite with a pull out couch. In the early days of their show, he'd had to pile up extra pillows in a bathtub more than a few times. A pull out couch wasn't great but it was better than a porcelain tub.
He had emotionally prepped himself for being allowed to be physically close to her during the day while being apart from her at night. In the interest of maintaining his standing as a courteous and considerate person, that distance was important. Sylvie's comfort always came first.
But what he hadn't prepared himself for was watching the cohost of 'Great Morning USA' blatantly flirt with Sylvie during the commercial breaks of the live broadcast. The man, Greg Grainger, flirted like he knew the truth of their relationship -- like it was obvious she and Matt weren't really a couple. He knows that can't be. The network would've been on their asses if that were so. No, it must be that Greg is a moron and an asshole.
Matt hates him before the first interview question is even asked. On camera, he manages to be perfectly pleasant, but once the cameras are off all of his carefully crafted filters fail him. It's true. Matt can't have Sylvie, but as long as they're pretending to be engaged Grainger can't either. Not only that, but he's not really with Sylvie. He has no reason to be jealous. And yet...
He's snappish and curt and generally hostile toward the Greg Grainger all morning. To his shame, Sylvie witnesses all of it while pointing more than a few scolding glares his way. It doesn't stop him from treating Grainger like the gum he stepped on the sidewalk outside the airport yesterday. It should. What Sylvie thinks of Matt means everything to him -- has from almost the moment they met -- but today he has no energy to adjust his behavior. It is what it is.
She huffs from her side of the hotel elevator. There's a gulf of space between them since she's pushed herself into the furthest corner, arms folded over her chest with a cross look on her face. The silence that's grown between them is oppressive. He doesn't know what to say to explain himself and even if he did...it doesn't seem like Sylvie wants to hear it.
When the doors open she stomps ahead of him, busying herself with pulling their hotel room keycard out of her purse. He should say something. At least try to apologize. Even though he's not entirely positive he's sorry. For all Grainger knew, he was flirted with an unavailable woman.
But that's beside the point at the moment.
"Sylvie, I--"
"Nope, save it for inside. We do not need anyone else overhearing the fight that's about to happen."
Fight? Ah, shit. He's really stepped in it this time. He presses his lips together and nods, head bobbing as the door finally opens. She holds the door open and motions him ahead of her. Once they're both inside she closes the door and turns the lock. He gulps anxiously.
Looks like they're in for a cage match.
Fan-freaking-tastic.
"What the hell was that?" She asks, throwing her purse down on the couch. "You were antagonistic with Greg the entire morning."
"Oh, it's Greg, is it? You guys are best buddies now?" He regrets the words the second they leave his lips. Why can't he keep his mouth shut today?
"I see. This is about him flirting with me?"
Matt glances away from her, shamefully staring at his shoes.
"Did you notice how I didn't flirt back?"
Yes, he did. He wondered about that. She could have -- off camera anyway. "Didn't stop him from trying."
She rolls her eyes at him and heaves a weary breath. "You know, lots of women flirt with you every damn day and I never act like this. I don't turn childish and petty. Ever."
Yeah, well, the difference between them as far as that goes should be obvious. He's in love with her. She isn't in love with him. All because her ex-fiance is a cheating asshole who let her former best friend steal all of Sylvie's clients. These days, she's too spooked to mix business and pleasure. At first, he agreed with her. Gabby left him with a mess to clean up and if Sylvie hadn't come along he's not sure he would've made it through. But over the years, he began to wish he never agreed with her on the "Business vs. Pleasure" pact. It completely backfired. He's head over heels in love with a woman and he can't do a damn thing about it.
"I don't think we can compare the two," he mutters, grabbing a beer out of the minibar. If they're gonna have one of their once a year fights then he's gonna need a drink.
"Oh no? And why's that?" she asks, taking the unopened beer bottle out of his hands. Finding the bottle opener, she pops the top and then takes a big swig before handing it back to him. "Because 'boys will be boys'? Because men have made dick-measuring contests socially acceptable displays of aggression?"
"What the hell are you talking about?" Matt asks, face pinching in disgust and confusion. "When have I ever used the justification of 'boys will be boys'? You know that's not me."
"That seemed to be you today."
"No, it wasn't."
"Then what was it? Because it sure seemed like you were pissed off at the appearance of him trying to take something that everyone thinks is yours. Your manly pride couldn't take the blow. Nevermind that our romantic relationship has always been for show."
"Oh for fucks sake," Matt exclaims with a bitter chuckle. "My attitude toward Greg had nothing to do with my manly pride and everything to do with you."
"Me?" She asks, brow furrowing and voice raising in outrage. "What did I do?"
"Nothing! You did nothing except sit there and be the gorgeous, charming and effortlessly generous woman I've been in love with for over two damn years! It was all me, okay? All me and my stupid insecurities because I know you don't love me and you would probably be happier if we'd never decided to play along with this stupid fake engagement. But we did and now I'm sitting next to you ruining everything for you and I've put off trying to fix it because I'm a selfish asshole who didn't want you to leave."
He's panting by the time his outburst is over. There wasn't a whole lot of breathing happening during his rant and he's feeling it now. Also...what the ever loving fuck did he just do? It almost feels like he lost consciousness while he was yelling. He remembers it but none of it is clear. There's a panicked haze covering his awareness.
Shit! Shit, shit, shit. Shit!
Did he just blow up his entire lift before taking even one sip of his beer? Yep, seems likely.
"You...you love me?" Sylvie asks, eyes wider than he's ever seen them.
He could take it back. It wouldn't look great, but he could do it. There's a moment where he debates whether or not he should, but while it might save him a small amount of face it would be a lie. He's never lied to Sylvie and he doesn't want to start now. "I realize my timing is screwed up and you'd rather not mix our personal and professional lives. I'm not expecting you to--"
She cuts off his attempt at letting her off the hook. "Matt, stop. Just answer me."
He swallows thickly and nods, meeting her big curious eyes. "Yeah--yes. I do. I love you. I have for a long time."
Sylvie's eyes water and her hands cover her mouth. Just when he thinks he's destroyed everything they've built over the last three years, she laughs. No, not laughs -- giggles. It's a wild, disbelieving, high pitched giggle. The last time he heard it, she was drunk off her ass. She's a lightweight sure, but one sip of beer isn't going to get her drunk. That can't be what caused it this time.
When her hands fall from her face, she's beaming at him so hard and wide that her eyes look like little half moons. It's honestly fitting considering she's glowing as if she's the only star in the middle of a long and dark night. Jesus, he loves her so much she makes his chest ache for no real reason at all.
"I love you too."
He goes still, unable to process the words that left her lips. "What?"
"I love you too," she repeats, taking the beer bottle out of his hand a second time. This time setting it down on a coaster. "I have for a long time."
It's the mimicking of his own words that finally does it. Everything clicks into place. He breeches the small space between them and yanks her forward by the pockets on her well pressed black blazer. She laughs and lets herself fall into him, her arms instinctively wrapping around his neck. "You love me," he states, needing her to confirm it one last time.
She nods. "And you love me."
"I do. I truly do."
"Good," she states, releasing a slow, relieved breath. "You should probably kiss me now."
"Oh, so the cage match is over?" He asks, teasingly.
She grins wickedly, leaning forward until her nose bumps against his. "Yep, and I won."
"I'd argue the point," he begins. "But I'd really like to stay out of the doghouse."
"Matt, shut up and kiss me."
"Yes, ma'am. Copy that."
When his lips find hers, every muscle in his body relaxes. The holes in his heart, leftover from years of neglect, fill in and start to heal as her lips part for him. This kiss is better than any he's had before. Sylvie's giving it everything she's got, grasping the hair on the nape of his neck and pushing herself flush against him. Tongues tangle and taste, hands wander, blazers and jackets are dropped to the floor. He guides her down to the couch, pressing her back into the cushions while he stretches over her.
They still have a lot to figure out -- like how are they going to proceed with the network, what do their feelings mean for their professional relationship, and does he still have to sleep on the pull out?
But all of that can wait for a while. Right now, he wants to enjoy this moment with her and revel in the possibilities. They love each other, and that's all that matters. They'll figure out the rest later -- the way they always have.
Together.

—— “Ready big bro? Boden’s about to carve the turkey,” You asked, leaning on Kelly’s doorframe.
“I’ll be right there, just finishing this run sheet.”
“Better hurry up, you know how Boden likes everyone to watch his magic.”
A small chuckle left your mouth as you walked towards Matt’s quarters.
“Turkey time, Baby,” you smiled, leaning over to give him a secretive peck on the lips.
“I’m ready for another kinda time,” he smirked.
“Not right now baby, Boden’s waiting, something about turkey magic.” You pulled him away from his desk and practicality dragged your husband to the common room.
“Casey, Severide, finally,” Boden groaned, “where’s the other Severide?”
“I told Kelly it was chow time just a m-“
You were cut off by your brother slipping in behind you and taking a seat at the table.
“Let’s eat before these damn bells go off,” Boden announced.
As the firehouse passed around the bowls and platters of the thanksgiving feast truck prepared, Matt couldn’t help, but keep smirking in your direction.
“Severide,” Joe called out.
Both you and Kelly popped your heads up from your plates.
“Which one?” Kelly joked.
“PIC Severide. Pass the potatoes.”
You passed the potatoes as Matt kept smirking in your direction.
As the firehouse finished their meals, you called out, “squad’s on dish duty, right?”
“Thanksgiving doesn’t count, that’s a team sport,” Capp argued.
“I say it still counts,” Joe smiled, getting up from his seat.
“Works for me,” Herrmann announced, pushing away from the table.
Truck and Engine, along with you and Shay quickly left the common room as to not be recruited to dry what seemed like millions of dishes.
“Got a minute,” you asked Matt, a devilish grin across your face.
“Hell yeah I’ve got a minute.”
Pulling you into his quarters, he closed the blinds and locked the door behind you as you pulled him into a very passionate make out session. Your hands in each others hair giving you flashbacks to you at 16 with the boy down the road.
With you pulling his shirt off and him pulling off yours, you were fully in the not safe for work category. You were unbuttoning your pants as there was a knock on the door.
You quickly threw your shirt back on and through the blinds, you could tell the shadow on the other side of the door belonged to your brother.
“Casey, you seen my sister?” He knocked.
Matt panicked and threw on his shirt and opened the door before you could tell him he put it out inside out.
Kelly looked at Matt’s shirt and the flushed look on your face.
“Well aren’t you two celebrating the life of that bird?” He shook his head.
“What’s up Kelly?” You asked, attempting to fix your hair.
“Boden wanted to see you, but it’s not urgent if you want to get back to what you were doing.”
Fixing yourself up, you walked out of Matt’s quarters, only to hear Kelly laugh behind you.
“You’re doing it at the firehouse now?” He chuckled.
“We didn’t do anything, you interrupted us,” Matt fired back.
You were just out of earshot now, so you couldn’t hear them, but when you looked over your shoulder, you could tell they hadn’t changed topics.
Just as you were reaching the bullpen, dispatch announced your next call, “Ambulance 61, Truck 81, Squad 3, car accident, 555 West Halstead.”
You turned around and started your jog towards the app floor. Shay was already in the drivers seat when you got there, pulling 61 into the street before you could even get your seat belt on.
About two minutes before the accident site, you hit traffic. Heavy, After-dinner, thanksgiving traffic. Lights, horns and sirens weren’t enough to make traffic move even an inch.
“61 how far out are you?” Matt called over the radio.
“Two minutes, but we’ve hit stand-still traffic,” you sighed.
“Call for another ambo, we’re in bad shape over here.”
“61 to Main, we’re stuck in traffic and unable to take in the West Halstead call. Requesting another ambo for truck and squad assist,” you radioed into dispatch.
“Ambulance 90 is 20 minutes out,” dispatch replied.
“Casey, did you get that?” You asked.
“Yeah, do what you can to get here quickly. We’ve got a victim in labor,” he replied.
You motioned to Leslie to try the horns and siren again.
“No luck,” she announced, frustrated and banging on the steering wheel.
“How’s she doing?” You asked Matt.
“Contractions are about two-ish minutes apart.”
“Matt she’s going to need to start pushing. Get all the blankets and the med kit from the truck. You’re going to have to deliver there.”
Leslie looked over to you, shocked at what you just said.
“Are you sure you want him to do that?” She whispered.
“We don’t have much of a choice,” you whispered back, “plus it’s Matt. He’s a natural.”
“We’re ready here,” Casey told you.
“Ok on her next contraction, I need you to tell her to push. Keep her focused on this baby.”
“I don’t know if I can do this, Severide.”
“You have to.”
Several minutes went by without communication from Matt. Finally, over the radio, you could hear screaming from the laboring mother.
“How’s she doing, Matt?”
“Baby’s about half way. Next contraction is about to start.”
The traffic in front of you started to ease enough so Shay could maneuver around it.
“Casey, we’re on our way. A minute out,” Shay announced.
“I shouldn’t stop right?” He asked.
“Keep going, Casey. We’ll take over when we get there. Once the baby is born, dry it off and hand it to the mother.”
Shay was focused, her knuckles white from the amount of force she was putting on them, trying to make sure you got to this victim.
Pulling up to the accident seen, you saw Matt by the passenger door of a mangled car.
“Baby is here,” Matt called out over the radio.
Grabbing the jump bag, monitor, oxygen and stretcher, you and Shay rushed to Matt’s side.
“Casey, we’re gonna load and go,” you informed him.
“We didn’t have anything to cut the cord,” he was breathing heavily.
As you truck helped you with loading the victim, you reassured Matt.
“You did good. Congrats, Casey,” you smiled, shutting the ambulance doors behind you.
——
Arriving back to the house late, you flopped into your bunk and fell right to sleep. You were blessed with no overnight calls to end the shift, so you could actually get a little sleep, a rarity on shift.
When you woke up, you quickly packed your duffel bag and met Matt out front.
“Ready?” He asked.
“Yeah, let’s go,” you smiled, “maybe some uninterrupted time?”
Matt shot you a look.
“Is that a yes?” You asked, getting in his truck.
“Definitely,” he grinned, starting the truck.
As you arrived back at your apartment, Matt had a look on his face.
“What’s on your mind?” You asked, plopping down on the couch.
“That call.”
“The car accident?”
“Yeah. I delivered a baby on a road today,” he rushed.
“I’m so proud of you.”
“I think we should have a baby,” he paced.
“What?”
“Yeah, you and me. We could do it, I know we can.”
“Matt, I-“
“Baby, we’d be so good-“
“Matt!” You yelled, cutting him off mid sentence.
“What?”
“I don’t know if I’m ready to have a baby,” you admitted.
“What?”
“I’m finally in a good spot at 51. I finally made PIC. I don’t want to take time off right now. I know you want to have a baby.”
“Yeah, I do,” he said, firmly.
“I don’t know if I can have a baby with you right now.”
He grabbed his duffel off the floor and started walking towards the door.
“Where are you going?” You got up from the couch.
“You can’t drop a bomb like that on me and expect me to just sit here. I’m going to Kelly’s.”
The apartment door shut with a bang. All you could think was “was this a mistake?”

Based around my original character Dani and her relationships within this universe. You don't have to read them in order and there will be time skips between each one. I've been super into the Chicago universe, specifically Fire and Med so here this is haha.

a ring to prove it
Tumblr media
Summary - She didn’t know if it was because of the wait since the last time they had been together or if it was the addition of the ring on her finger and the promises of a future together. Whatever it was, it had been hours and she was still tingling. She was back in Matt Casey’s arms and couldn’t be happier.
Notes - a little post 11x22 fic, happy reading! ❤️ AO3 Link
His breathing was steady, his heart rate had calmed from their exertions hours ago and he was peacefully asleep. But she was awake. Her head was resting on his chest, his arms tight around her even in his dreams, her fingers were tracing patterns in his skin remembering the expanses of muscle she had memorised those months before.
Being back in his arms was more than she had ever thought she would experience again. Somewhere along the line she had forgotten just how Matt Casey made her feel. What he made her feel by just being in his presence yes but also how he loved her. She had never fallen as hard off the proverbial cliff as she did when Matt had his hands or tongue on her, when he was inside her. She hadn’t been with anyone that way since she had ended them by a phone call. A phone call she both regretted and knew was the right thing at that moment.
Dylan was nice enough but he didn’t make her want to rip her clothes off the way Matt did. And any pleasure she had given herself even when they were together, it was Matt’s name that passed through her lips when she finished. It was his eyes she saw staring back at her when she closed her eyes.
And last night had been nothing short of mind blowing. She didn’t know if it was because of the wait since the last time they had been together or if it was the addition of the ring on her finger and the promises of a future together. Whatever it was, it had been hours and she was still tingling.
When she opened the door the day before and was greeted by the sight of Matt Casey on the other side, the last thing she had expected was for him to drop down on one knee and ask her to marry him.
‘Sylvie Brett, we were meant to be. Will you make me and three kids the luckiest family in the world and marry me?’
She had clutched at her chest, staring at the man she had wished for so long would do exactly what he was doing now and ask her to spend her life with him. She could see the ring shining in the box but her gaze was fixed directly on him, on his eyes, his smile.
She nodded, how could she do anything else but say yes. This was exactly what she had dreamed of.
‘Yes,’ she said, the tears spilling down her cheeks as Matt’s grin spread wider across his cheeks. She dropped to her knees in front of him, pulling his face to hers and melding their lips together. Her salty tears mingled in the kiss but she didn’t care, she had just said yes to marrying Matt Casey. They were going to be a family. Her, Matt, Ben, Griffin and Julia. Her family.
She let her fingers thread through his hair, it was slightly shorter than it had been at the wedding - the last time she had kissed him. His arms wound tightly around her waist, pulling her close to him from their slightly awkward position kneeling in front of each other.
‘Yes,’ she said in between kisses, ‘yes.’ She felt him grin against her lips and let herself get lost in the familiar sensation of his against hers. It was only when she felt her phone vibrating in the back pocket of her overalls she pulled away.
‘It’s Hermann,’ she said, her lips still swollen from the kiss but she hadn’t been expecting Hermann to call. ‘I better get this,’ Matt nodded, the smile not leaving his face and his arms didn’t relax his hold on her either. She didn’t make an attempt to move away from him as she swiped and answered the call.
Sylvie didn’t think either of them expected to be called to the hospital before Matt even had a chance to slide the ring onto her finger but he had pocketed the box as soon as she had ended the call having heard everything Hermann had said and said he would drive, wrapping her hand in his and leading her out to the car.
The car ride to the hospital was silent, the tears silently streaming down her face that had started as tears of joy were now ones of pain and worry. Matt kept a tight hold of her hand all the way to Med and she was grateful she had him to lean on as neither of them knew what to expect when they arrived. Hermann had sounded scared on the phone, he had tried to tell her he was sure Mouch would be okay but his voice had cracked and Sylvie’s heart had sunk. Mouch couldn’t be dying, she refused to even entertain the idea.
‘I think we shouldn’t tell them,’ she whispered into the silence of the car. ‘About us.’
Matt nodded. ‘I agree, this isn’t the moment.’ He held on a little tighter for the reminder of the journey, her own knuckles were going white at the pressure she was applying back on his.
He went to let go of her hand when they entered but Sylvie couldn’t bring herself to unlink their fingers, she needed him right now, needed the feeling of his warm skin against hers to ground her or else she might lose it. Her words to Matt had originally meant that she thought they should keep the fact they were back together underwraps but the further they walked into the hospital, she realised she just meant the engagement. She couldn’t let go of his hand right now. Wouldn’t let go of it.
No one commented on them walking in together hand in hand, no one said anything at all. The waiting room was eerily silent, their friends scattered around, heads in hands, staring at walls, silently crying. Matt and her joined them, finding two empty chairs and settling down next to Stella. Sylvie reached across and wrapped her other arm around the Lieutenant’s shoulder. No matter how many times they sat in hospital waiting rooms whilst one of their own was hurt - it never got any easier.
Sylvie didn’t know long they sat there, waiting for someone to bring them news. The waiting room was deep in the middle of the hospital with no windows, hours could have passed or it could have been mere minutes before a doctor in black scrubs came out and gave them the news they had been holding their breaths for.
‘He’s going to be okay,’ he said and Sylvie felt like the elephant that had been sitting on her chest constricting her breathing was finally removed. She leant into Matt’s side and let him wrap his arms around her pulling her safely into his chest.
Mouch was going to be okay. And she was going to marry Matt Casey.
——————————————————————————
On the way back to hers from the hospital, Mouch having kicked them all out saying he wasn’t having Chicago’s best sleeping in a waiting room if they didn’t need to, the air was lighter in the car.
‘Did you tell the boys?’ Sylvie wondered aloud.
‘Ben and Griffin?’ Matt clarified. ‘I did.’ He chuckled. ‘They were very excited at even the possibility of us getting back together. Pretty much pushed me out of the house to the airport when I said I was going to propose.’
Sylvie felt her cheeks redden. She had had no issues bonding with Griffin but it had taken time before Ben opened up to her but she had understood. His life hadn’t been easy and enough people had already let him down, he didn’t want to risk getting hurt again. The prospect of them both being back in her life, that they both wanted her back in their lives warmed her heart.
‘I told them about Julia too,’ Matt added with a small smile, glancing across at her as they pulled to a stop at a traffic light.
‘You did?’ Sylvie asked slightly shocked but pleasantly so.
‘Called them once you got the news, it felt right to let them know,’ Matt shrugged.
‘And they were happy about it?’ Sylvie was worried the addition of someone else into their family bubble could cause issues, especially for Ben.
‘Said they were going to spoil her rotten,’ Matt chuckled. ‘Ben said he would teach her how to mountain bike when she’s old enough - it’s his current favourite thing.’
They really were going to be a family, all of them together.
——————————————————————————
Matt stirred awake, groaning slightly as he was brought back into consciousness, his muscles contracting under Sylvie’s touch.
‘Morning,’ he said groggily, smiling down at where she had turned her focus to look up at him from her position on his chest.
‘Good morning,’ she whispered, reaching up to press her lips against his before relaxing back into his hold.
‘I could hear your mind working in my dreams,’ Matt said, stroking his fingers against the bare skin of her hip.
‘Mmm’ she hummed in response.
‘Want to share with the room?’ He asked and she smiled, pressing her face against his chest.
‘I was just thinking about our life,’ she admitted, with anyone else she would have blushed at her words but not with Matt. He always made her feel safe enough to speak truthfully, provided her the space to be exactly who she wanted to be without fear of judgement. She’d not always been so lucky in her past relationships.
Harrison hadn’t really wanted Sylvie Brett, he’d wanted the wife he thought he could mould Sylvie into being. He disliked everything about her that made her her. All the bright and caring aspects that made her who she was. He just wanted her to bend to his wishes and give up everything in her life that she cared about.
Antonio, goodness knows what he had wanted but it wasn’t what she had wanted. That was a relationship doomed to fail from the start, something she thought both of them had luckily realised before it got too late.
Kyle wanted a preacher's wife, he thought he was giving her what she wanted - space away from Chicago after her accident. But that wasn’t her either. She was a Chicago girl now, and that was where she belonged.
But Matt, Matt wanted her exactly how she was, all the blemishes and flaws along with the shiny and good. He supported her through everything, had been her number one cheerleader even before they had realised how they felt about each other. His heart was everything good and Sylvie loved him for it.
‘It's going to be a beautiful life,’ Matt said, bringing up the hand not wrapped around hers to run his fingers over the ring that now graced her left hand.
‘What time is your flight?’ She asked quietly. They’d spoken about him going back to Oregon in between rounds last night when their skin was still tacky with sweat, their legs refusing to untangle themselves.
‘I have to go back to Oregon tomorrow,’ he said into the quiet night air. ‘But only to wrap things up,’ he tightened his hold on her, one hand continuing to trail up and down her bare back. ‘It should only take a couple of weeks.’
‘Okay,’ Sylvie muttered. She knew he wanted to be back in Chicago as much as she wanted him back, he had shown her how much just a moment ago.
‘I agreed with CFD to start teaching at the academy in 6 weeks, they know I want back in the action but teaching will do until they can find me a house,’ he said, pressing a kiss to the top of her head.
‘I’ll take you to the airport tomorrow,’ Sylvie said. This wouldn’t be like last time. They had a plan this time. He was coming back to her, he was going to marry her.
‘I think it’s just past midday,’ Matt said and Sylvie chuckled at his vagueness. ‘I’ll check when this beautiful woman lets me out of her bed,’ he said in mock offence at her laugh.
‘I can let you out now if you’d like,’ Sylvie sassed, making a move to untangle herself but Matt groaned and pulled her back against his chest.
‘Never,’ he murmured as he peppered her face with kisses and her soft giggles filled the room.
‘I’ll call you as soon as I land,’ he said as the pair settled back into their embrace, the covers pooling around their waists as his movements had shifted them slightly.
‘Okay,’ she said, resuming tracing patterns against his chest.
‘When will Julia arrive?’ He asked curiously.
‘I think a couple of days,’ Sylvie admitted. ‘Although Amber took back custody, there’s still papers to sign. You know how it is with the DFS.’
‘You’re going to give her the most beautiful life Sylvie,’ Matt murmured against her hair.
‘We are,’ Sylvie corrected him. Although technically she was doing this alone and it was her name on the paperwork, she wanted Matt by her side every step of the way. And she knew he was all in. ‘We are going to have the most wonderful family.’
‘We are,’ Matt said, his words reminiscent of when she had finally admitted her feelings to him in the middle of the night out on the North Apron.
‘We will have the most incredible life, all of us together.’
‘We will.’
‘And we have each other. Forever. We are it for each other.’
‘We are,’ Matt repeated.
Sylvie wasn’t looking forward to saying goodbye to him in just a few hours, but she knew this goodbye would be their last. When he returned, it would be for good. They would be together. She had a ring on her finger to prove it.
