sure, it gives you a paltry few dials and knobs, lets you change the text a lil, use some different colors.

but what if the way your system lets you use it is just fundamentally foreign and awkward to you? what then? what good is a fresh coat of paint when all the cogs are one size too small, but put in place as if they were one size too big?

and yet, so many people are just ...fine with it. they don't mind having to drag the mouse all the way across the fucking screen to switch to a different window (yes, alt-tab exists, but your mouse doesn't follow). they don't mind having to alt-tab through more than 2 windows, missing the window they meant to go to, and having to cycle all the way through again.

it makes me a bit sad.

i think the problem is that nobody ever tells them it gets better than that. they think it's fine because it's all they've ever known, and well, surely millions and billions of people can't be wrong... right??

the other problem is that the systems they know don't let them do it better. using Windows? you must use the Windows way. using Mac? it's the Mac way for you. in either case, not truly your way.

but oh, wouldn't that be wonderful, a system that defines itself by just letting you have fun and be yourself. that doen't try to prescribe a way to do things. that lets you choose your own way. where you can truly do whatever the fuck you want, however the fuck you want. that lets you just own the device in your hands.

where you aren't stuck with whatever you're given. where you don't even have to use what you're given at all. where you as the user are truly respected as the owner of your system.

like im sorry but i dont like that 'fictional characters are objects' post that acts like caring about the real life implications of how you treat a character is going into a purity spirals or what have you bc like. fandoms can be and are racist about characters of color. it doesnt reallly matter if the character isnt real, if you're racist abt a fictional character that can and does bleed over into real life and it does make fandom spaces actively hostile to actual poc. has anyone else here ever heard of RaceFail this has been going on for years and acting ignorant abt it isnt cute

it doesnt even really matter if op wasnt thinking abt race when they made that post bc if they make an incredibly broad statement like "any sort of 'unpleasant' treatment of a fictional character is ok bc its fictional and it doesnt reflect what kind of person you are in real life" that shuts down any criticism of it as being obsessed with purity optics then they are in fact giving a pass to people being racist, sexist, pedophilic, etc to various characters. people are in fact racist in real life because of fandom and it starts with how they treat characters like that bc it then gives a message to other people in the community what kind of behavior is allowed and who is welcome there (and who is excluded)

hello!! do you have any other book recommendations?? i loveeeeeee aftg, started the carry on series because of you but have had to put that in hold because i currently can’t get behind the first person writing but yes i think you have great taste and need i more books muah hope you are well!!!!!

ANON! i cannot in good faith enable your avoidance of carry on because of the point of view! i understand that it's a transition if you don't read it often, but if you open your mind to first person writing there is a rich world of quality stories waiting for you! pov is like any other narrtive tool imo -- it's good when it's done well, it's bad when it's done poorly. first person gets a bad rap bc it is so prevalent in crappy fast-fiction books. those are shitty & shallow characters, and they're delivering thoughts to you in unnatural and uninteresting ways -- so of course you don't want to be in their heads.

BUT CARRY ON!!!! these characters have so much depth and complexity and struggles and hopes... the first person pov is used to drive home unique character voices and motivations in a series that has a whole lot going on. also, rainbow rowell is fucking hilarious, and there are so many parts of the novel that just wouldn't hit if the narration was done in third person. it's true on the reverse too: the back and forth of pov shift in a dramatic scene will make u ache with how much these characters misunderstand how loved they are. it's a fucking TRIUMPH of the first person. i too used to avoid it, but carry on made me let first person into my heart...

if you get past the first baz pov chapter and you still don't like it, then we can talk. but actually, quite a few of my fave books are first person!!
