Your interpretation of Urzai is honestly one of my favourite things in the fandom! I also love how you write Ozai and the headcanon that he is prodigious in music.

Thank you! I'm rather attached to my headcanon of Ozai being a musical prodigy as well. It really grew out of that one throwaway fact in the Avatar Extras that Zuko is a gifted tsungi horn player, which I sort of ran with and decided meant Zuko was innately musical. Then I thought it would be cool if that was something he got from his father, since Ozai not fully appreciating his own or Zuko's musical gifts fits in nicely with my general approach to writing Ozai as seeing Zuko as a reflection of his own worst/least valuable qualities.

Can we get more on the Innocence AU with Ozai? I'm now really curious!

Don’t mind if I do! Hope you don’t mind if I ramble a bit.

The Innocence AU is one of 4 radically different Ozai AUs I keep going back to for whatever reason. This one kind of functions like a long-winded redemption arc for him, albeit completely out of order. I wanted each chapter to be fairly sizable, each detailing one year of development, starting from Ozai de-aged to three.

The summary is that Aang wipes Ozai’s memory and age (but y’know much more accidentally, absolutely no one--except the Lion-Turtle of course--knew what was going to happen), and he only starts with two bits of knowledge: his own name and that he’s a Prince of the Fire Nation (not that he knows what that means). comes to the conclusion that he should probably bring him back to his family, because who else is going to handle him? Which is very difficult of course because of the royal family, the only one who’s willing to make time for this very confused kid is Iroh (even as a blank slate, Zuko is deeply uncomfortable with child!Ozai, and the irony is that Zuko’s tense, stand-offishness actually frightens the boy who used to be his father). One of the themes is “don’t repeat the past,” as characters try to find a balance between trying to avoid Ozai thanks to their baggage, and trying not to drive him back into the bitter, loner’s anger that corrupted him in the first place.

The fic is intended to be a big exploration of Ozai’s past as his memories slowly trickle back with the royal family and detailing some of the unpleasant things about Azulon’s parenting, and some of Iroh’s less than stellar track record as an older brother that left it’s mark on the Ozai we know.

There are a handful of scenarios I have planned to happen over the course of this fic:

Azula, imprisoned, has also grown to hate her father, but unlike most of the family, she is prone to dropping more truthful nuggets about Ozai’s identity rather than hiding them. Pre-teen Ozai grows fond of her in spite of how mean she is to him, feeling similarly rejected. He eventually steals the keys to her cell and sets her free (Azula just wants to be free of all of them), fully expecting to be harshly punished for it.

Ozai getting kidnapped by the rebellious New Ozai Society, who attempt to brainwash him into re-becoming the man who they once followed, forcing Ozai’s former enemies to stop the plot and rescue him.

Iroh eventually realizes that having Ozai living in close-quarters with Zuko is a bad idea (because it’s hard to help Ozai without hurting Zuko) and decides to take his brother out of the palace to live with him instead. He sees this as a chance to redeem himself for not saving the brother he knew in the past.

Ozai remembers burning Zuko well into his teenage years, and does not react well. He runs away for a time, drinking heavily and engaging in reckless self-destructive behavior until he’s tracked down by a no-nonsense Sokka who just intends to drag him home. Ozai attempts to bait Sokka into violently assaulting him by revealing what he remembered, but it doesn’t quite succeed.

A bittersweet reunion between Ozai and Ursa, the former of which remembering most of his past with her, but unable to figure out how much of it was love or not.

Meditation never went well. It was a fact of life. Meditation never went well, and the older he got, the worse it was. There was always too much spinning around in his head to quiet it. Ozai glowered at his candle and snuffed it with a huff.

The Northern Earth Kingdom wasn't as warm as the islands, and Ozai pulled his cloak in around himself. His feet carried him without asking him where he wanted to go, and it wasn't long before he was standing outside his brother's tent. Inside, he could here the soft snores that meant his brother had fallen asleep. Probably Lu Ten had kept him up all night. Ozai slipped inside. Sure enough, father and son were both asleep.

Ozai didn't know how long he stood there. The peace of it lulled him. But he felt himself look up. A man stood tall next to his brother, standing over him. He was glowing, pale in the dim light of the closed tent. "He looks like his grandfather," the man said.

"Who are you?" Ozai whispered, afraid. "What are you?"

The man's face stayed set in its grim little frown as they watched Iroh sleep. "I am Avatar Roku."

"Then you're my past life. You're dead."

"Yes." He sighed. "Your grandfather left me to die so that I wouldn't put an end to this war. We were friends once, almost brothers."

"What's your point?" Ozai asked, but he already knew the answer.

"When the time comes to do your duty, will you succeed where I failed?"

"Go away," Ozai snapped. When Roku stayed put, Ozai balled his hands into fists. "GET OUT!"

"What?" Iroh blinked awake. Roku was gone. Lu Ten started to cry. "Ozai, what are you..."

"It's nothing," Ozai told him. "Go back to sleep."

A redraw of a picture I did years ago in MMD. I decided to add Rosalina this time around :3

One thing I really adore is that, between the old pic from 2017 and this one, Pauline rose from the forgotten and finally became a playable character (and a recurring one at that). I'm so proud of her. 🤧

While working on this I also realised that last time I actually drew any of them, apart from Pauline, was literal years ago 😵
