I had WAY too much fun explaining my process for one of yesterday’s drawings, with the result that I’m going to create a sideblog to explain my drawing process. Flours For His Princess

Chat Noir turns into a cat!

No akumas or enemies, just Adrien figuring out suddenly being a cat and bakery hijinks.

Plagg, Claws Out!

Well, he definitely hadn’t expected this.

Instead of his usual transformation light, he heard -no, felt- a dull pufft and noticed a marked change in his perspective. He peered about, trying to assess the situation or identify any possible threats.

This was strange. No evil laughter or screaming coming from the streets, and he didn’t seem to have left his room or been magically captured? Yet something felt… quite off. For one, everything in his room seemed much bigger. Perhaps it was an akuma that could change sizes from a distance?

Anyways, he needed to get up to the windows to get a better idea of what was going on outside. He padded over towards the windowed wall and tried to jump up to the ledge from his new diminutive position. Oh wow!

Apparently, his size wasn’t the only change- that was a way more powerful jump than he expected without his staff! Oof. Yeah, that was a definite faceplant into the window. Luckily, he seemed to have some padding for the collision, but also parts of his face felt extra sensitive. He rubbed at his whiskers, offended.

…Wait.

Oh no, oh no. He curled in on himself, paws covering his face, afraid to look. Deep breaths Adrien. You are Paris’ hero Chat Noir and they probably need you right now. Ok, let’s open our eyes, and- yup. Those were little black paws, and oh- of course, a tail twitching with irritation. (No, don’t get distracted by those adorable toe beans! They might be cute, but not enough to outweigh the panic setting in.)

As his mind dropped him into a downward spiral of fear and confusion, a small light of hope pulled him out.

Of course! Marinette could help him! She always knew just what to do. A soft smile played below his whiskers.

Ok. Goals he could do - he’d been meeting unrealistic expectations his whole life. The first step was to get out of his room. Thankfully, his father always installed the latest tech. If he could just find the remote, it would be kitten’s play to get the windows open!

Two and a half window sills of cat-robatics later and he was standing over the remote. It may have been slightly more awkward with paws than he anticipated, but the buttons were big enough that he had the window open shortly.

The journey was easy, natural. That’s the word that came to mind as he bounded over rooftops. Still, with his short legs, it was nearing sundown by the time he arrived.

He could see through the large display windows that Marinette was currently ringing up her last customers.

Purrfect. He could slip in the back door unnoticed, and then catch her when she was alone. Trying to communicate that his cat self was actually Chat Noir was going to be complicated, even without other people in the mix.

Dropping like a shadow from the rooftop across the street, weaving nimbly between the traffic- Oh yeah. He was totally stealth personified. A smug kitty smirk marked his furred face.

Marinette’s parents stepped out the back door, arm in arm. He darted through the impossibly tiny gap before it closed, thoughts flitting briefly to how Marinette must be helping with the store to let them go on a date night.

How just like her. Hopefully she has room in her schedule to help one more kitten today…

The small cat’s perspective of the kitchen still spoke to the warm and loving family running it. Small touches like Marinette’s signature logo on a handmade apron and oven mitts, the lack of dust -even from his new view below the counters- speaking to Sabine’s dedication, and that heavenly aroma- no doubt Tom’s experiment was going to be a huge hit on the new menu!

Although the oven was now off, there was a tantalizing radius of warmth in front of the large appliance. A shiver of pleasure visibly moved from his shoulders down to his tail. Ah, I could get used to sleeping like this, he thought as he circled once, twice and began to lay his head upon his paws…

NO!! I shall not succumb to the demon warmth!

With a slight hiss, he scrambled up and away from that lovely spot, already missing the blanket-like embrace.

Where was far enough? Somewhere Marinette would be sure to see him, but nowhere near the heavenly oven?

His sight landed upon a human eye-level shelf. Course decided, he took a few steps back and bounded onto the island counter. Landing gracefully, he turned to eye the intended shelf. Shoulders lowered, butt wiggling, eyes narrowed to focused slits- He leaped and soared across the kitchen!

Things had been going so well the whole journey, and his confidence was through the roof right now. Unfortunately, this particular jump was much like that first in his room - too much power, too little landing space.

He collided claws first with a partially filled sack of flour.

Floundering for purchase on the shelf, he instead twisted the fabric until his claws were stuck, with the rest of the momentum launching both cat and flour past the shelf.

Turning in the air, trying to free his claws- Almost had it… There!

His heart dropped as he saw that ‘releasing his claws’ had actually been ‘ripping the sack open.’

Marinette waved off Nadia and Manon as they left, arms full of pastries. She locked the door and stretched her arms high above her head. She huffed, hands on hips. Time to clean up the kitchen, and then the storefront.

She pushed back the swinging door, lifting her gaze to meet startled green eyes amidst a field of white.

Both parties seemed equally surprised as they locked gazes. Marinette halfway through the door, cat lying on its back, paws in the air - utterly covered in flour.

Mreow?

The confused noise was followed by some kitten sneezes and little flour clouds. Tired as she was, Marinette couldn’t help the chuckles bubbling up her throat as the white lump attempted to right itself, spreading flour around in the process.

“Chaton Blanc, what trouble you’ve made!” She managed between giggles.

Gently stepping between flour drifts she picked up the little mischief maker and folded him into her apron to prevent the mess from spreading further.

“Let’s get you cleaned up, Mon Minou.”

Holding the currently-white cat close, Marinette starts up toward her apartment. The disaster in the kitchen can wait.            🐾

Ao3 Wrap Up 2023

I don’t know if anyone has done this, I hope I don’t step on anyone’s toes. Here a wrap up for 2023 for Miraculous Ladybug!

This study only assesses the fanfics posted by the last update, so if there was an older fic that was from 2021 that was updated in 2023, this would be captured by this study.

🖤 Works posted to Ao3 in 2023

In 2023 there were 10,515 fanfics posted (including crossovers and all languages). The median word count per fanfic was 2,268 words. In general, each fic received 5 comments, 561 hits and 36 kudos (median).

A majority of fanfics were not crossovers (Fig 1). The peak of Ao3 posts for Miraculous Ladybug was in 2021 with a total of 11,350 fanfics. Fanfics with crossovers have had a steady rise in popularity from 2018 with a peak of 2,609 in 2021.

There was a large shift in a number of pairings, in particular there was a dramatic increase in the number of fics tagged with Felix Fathom / Kagami Tsurugi (see below the cut for Season 5 spoilers). Other notable mentions are also Marinette Dupain-Cheng / Zoe Lee with a 2.5 fold increase in fanfics posted in 2023 (63 in total) compared to 2022 (26 in total).

🖤 Conclusions

It’s been a big year, and one that is controversial in many ways. I was just curious to see if there’s a decrease in activity since the season 5 finale, but it looks like the fanfiction writing is going strong. But are fans tuning out? Or are we trying to create more fix-it fics? (I will delve into that in a different post, since this was quite labour intensive).

There have been some interesting changes in relationship tags as well as tags for Sentimonsters (below the cut).

🖤 2023 was also the year Feligami became official

This has lead to a dramatic increase in fanfics for the power couple.

💔 2023 was also when the sentimonster theory was confirmed

In 2023, there were 192 works that tagged for Sentimonster Adrien, and 95 for Sentimonster Felix and 34 for Sentimonster Kagami. Recent usage for the tag 'Adrien is not a Sentimonster' was also observed (21 cases).

Methodology

Filtering

The analyses start from Sep 05, 2012 when the first promotional video (PV) for Miraculous Ladybug was publicly leaked [1].

Since the website is very active, the information may change as this data is best considered to be a snapshot of the fanfics posted at this point in time. Also note that the filter is also for last update, and not first posted, so that older fics may be captured in later datasets. But for the purposes of this study, I am assuming that if the author is updating, then they are still active in the fandom.

To get an idea on what was posted to Ao3 this year, I have filtered for last published date 01 Jan 2023 - 31 Dec 2023. Note that while there was only an option for selecting by Last Post Date, which meant that works originally posted earlier (pre-2023) would still be captured if it was updated within the bounds of these dates.

Furthermore, it is also possible to backdate works on Ao3 which may also give false results. However, it may be likely that if this did happen it would only be a small percentage of fanworks. As such the data is an approximation of fandom activity during 2023.

Relationship Tags

I have followed the Ao3 rules so that / are taken to mean romantic relations and & for platonic relationships. In this analysis, I have combined the numbers for Felix (PV), Felix Graham de Vanily and Felix Fathom.

Day 23: Rescue

this started out as an idea to write a fic about the MariChat moment we were robbed of in the Shanghai special and the fact that we don't get much of Chat coming to MariBug's rescue in fanfics. i hope you like it..:)

⚠mild depiction of attempted sexual assault

She was cornered.

Seven years. She'd been Ladybug for seven years now and never had she found herself in such a predicament where she actually felt cornered.

It was on her way home during the evening hours when two shady men dragged her into the nearest alley. The guys shoved her towards a wall whilst a third one, who'd been obscured by the lack of lighting in the alley, came forward with a knife. He threatened to slit her throat if she made a single noise in protest.

Now usually she was with a friend or in more public areas when dealing with such situations. How ironic that Paris's famous superhero, known for her good luck, was having an unfortunate evening. To even entertain a one-against-three fight would be a foolish notion. And transforming was entirely out of the question because she obviously couldn't reveal her identity to a trio of sleazy men. So then…

As stealthily as possible, she reached for her cellphone in her purse and tapped on its screen with muscle memory, hoping to dial an emergency call to—

The phone and the purse were snatched out of her grasp and thrown across the other side of the alley.

“Trying to be smart, huh?” spoke the burly one of them, face too close for comfort. Behind him, she saw Tikki peer out of her purse.

Go. Get help. Marinette mouthed in desperation but the kwami of creation shook her head, resolute to stay by her bearer's side.

“You have her first.” said the bearded one, as if offering to share his car for a drive.

Marinette felt disgust roil in her belly. Was that it? Was she going to let those repulsive men just put their hands on her and then be off? And do it all over again to another innocent woman?

She sighed. She knew the thing she was about to do was ridiculous. Utterly ridiculous , as Chloe would've said.

Marinette charged at them. Years of being a superhero had helped her gain basic combat experience. She lunged at the bearded man right in front of her, using the element of surprise to easily tackle him to the ground. She narrowly managed to avoid being caught by the burly guy and with all the strength she could harness, threw a punch at him. It barely ruffled him but it was enough to give her a moment of escape.

Except she failed. She had entirely forgotten about the third man. The one who had already been in the alley.

She felt his hands creepily rove around her waist and hips, and then she was hauled back against the wall. She shut her eyes tightly and pressed further into the concrete, hoping it would rather swallow her than let her suffer this sickening fate.

A piece of cloth was shoved in her mouth to silence her.

“I like the ones with a little fight in them. Always a pleasure to break ’em.” The men cackled in agreement.

Marinette clenched her palms into fists, fingernails digging painfully into her skin. She heard the rustling of a belt, followed by the undoing of a zipper. Knots of unease twisted inside her stomach, making her shudder. A lone tear rolled down her eye and she wished someone across the street would just happen to peek into the alley. Notice her being harassed. Save her .

She could sense the shadows of the men hovering around her now, one of them grabbing the hem of her shorts. Sucking in a breath, she braced herself for the assault, hoping it'd all be over as soon as it began.

The air around her shifted. Became tenser. Then, she felt him .

In an instant, the looming presence of those nasty men was gone. The next few minutes were a blur of angry shouts, noisy cracks, and painful thuds.

After a while, it all went quiet. Eerily quiet.

“Marinette! Are you alright?”

She knew that voice. A glimmer of hope flickered in her chest yet she found it impossible to summon her strength and utter a word in response.

“You're shaking!” The voice was alarmed now.

Oh! She was indeed shaking. And she hadn't even realized it in her state of fear.

Suddenly an arm was hooked under her calves, another around her shoulder as she felt herself being picked up and cradled close to a firm chest. The familiar, heady scent of musk mingling with leather pervaded her nose and her fists unclenched of their own accord.

“Ch-Chat Noir?” She stuttered, her voice breaking. “Is it really you?”

“Yes Princess, I'm here.” He soothed, nuzzling her even closer. “I'm real.”

Tentatively, she dared her eyelids open, dreading it might just be a vision of hope conjured by her frightened mind. But the sight of his toxic green orbs veiled behind a black mask made her heart flutter with faith, and she sobbed in relief at last.

“It's you!” She sobbed harder, reaching up a shaky hand to trace the edge of his mask. To feel his stubbled cheek under the graze of her palm. To make herself believe that she wasn't merely hallucinating. That she was truly saved.

“It's really you!” she cried with joy, tears streaming down her cheeks. “Did you– did you capture them? Those awful men.”

He turned around to reveal the three men— knocked out and wrists bound tightly together with his tail belt.

“Officer Roger is on his way. In the meantime,” He looked down at her conspiratorially and whispered, “I can do worse to them if you want.”

The obvious fury raging behind his mischievous demeanor made her smile. He was truly a charming and chivalrous hero. Her hero.

She shook her head in negation. “I'm content with being saved.”

“As you say, Princess.” He murmured, picking up her purse and phone.

With that, he extended his staff and took off, only stopping when her parents' well-known bakery came into sight. He landed gracefully on her balcony and laid her down on the chaise lounge. His eyes immediately scanned her form. “Forgot to ask earlier. Did they hurt you?”

“No. You arrived just in time.” She flashed him a grateful smile. “You came to my rescue.”

“Of course I did. I promised your father.” He gazed earnestly at her, clawed thumb caressing her tear-stained cheek. “I will always be here to save you, Princess.”

Her heart skipped a beat.

No matter what, he always showed up to protect her and stood by her. Both as Marinette and Ladybug. She had no idea how he managed to do it but she will forever be thankful to him.

Marinette put her palms on either side of his face to pull it closer, bemusing him momentarily. “Princess?”

She smiled softly and placed a kiss on the corner of his lips. “Thank you, kitty. For being my knight in shining leather.”
