💭 What is it?

This is a guide both for those in the Daydreaming Community, or want to learn more about it. It is meant to be an archive of all things relating to MaDD & ID, and is curated/run/owned by yours truly!

💭 Can I link this on my blog/post/etc?

Yes!! The whole reason this doc was made was so that it can be passed around as a general resource, so you are more than welcome to link it anywhere you want. The same goes for anything linked within the doc itself -- not that I own any of it anyway lol.

💭 Can we give suggestions?

Suggestions are highly encouraged & appreciated! I am only one person running this doc, after all, and will not be able to uncover/document everything without some help. You can send me stuff through DMs or my ask box.

💭 What happened to the original doc?

EDIT 3/27/24: the original document had gotten marked as spam by Google. This issue has now been resolved, and it's back up & running! The backup will remain, but not updated as often as the main doc will be. Sorry, I know it's a huge mess 😖 links have been updated to the main/original doc.

I wish I knew! It was brought to my attention that it had gotten flaged for review for...some reason. I've tried figuring out how to request a review for it, but it won't work. So I've resorted to just making a new doc. Sucks, but that's all I can do right now.

Because this is a whole new doc, I'm going to be tagging some people so the word gets spread a little bit. Sorry!

Hi! I have several questions, if that's okay.

I very recently found out about daydreaming community, and, honestly, was in awe, because all my life I thought I was that one weird autistic child with really big imagination and finding this community was like a blessing, because I don't feel that alone now. But, surfing a in this part of the internet left me a little bit confused and the fact that english is my second language does not help.

So, first question. I somewhat lost the line between immersive daydreamings and MaDD. I am sure that all of my daydreamings are immersive, because all of my life I was daydreaming to the point of every single moment of free time. But I don't understand when immersive daydreamings end and MaDD begins. As far as I understood, people with MaDD have difficult time leaving their daydreams, because of one reason or another and use them as coping mechanisms. At which point immersive daydreamings become MaDD? What is the line? What are, let's say, particular qualities of it? If that's okay for you and isn't hard, can you explain it in detail with examples? I try to understand myself, and while I find in myself a lot of stuff, I don't want to invade the MaDD community as (somewhat) healthy person.

Second, is having DID is a requirement for any of this? Is this still okay to be in the community and not have DID?

Third, maybe not a question, but clarification, as far as I understood, "para" in daydream community means someone (character, your version of self, yourself and so on) you have connection with. Again, character, yourself or version of yourself, in which I am sure. Am I correct in it? Can people you know in real life, if you are religious, God(s), spirits and others, different kins of alterhumanity and fictional characters from other media also consider as "para"? Are there any other labels like this?

Hi welcome! I remember the relief I felt when I first found this community too. MaDD can feel like such an isolating thing if you don't know others experience the same

This got a little long so answers to your questions are under the cut

1. Immersive daydreaming is defined as intense and developed daydreams that feel more vivid than regular passive daydreaming. It's often used as a coping mechanism and often started in childhood, but those are not defining features

Inherently, all maladaptive daydreaming is immersive. It becomes defined as maladaptive when it negatively impacts your daily life. This is widely up to your own interpretation, if you feel like it makes life (whether that's external activities or internal feelings) more difficult for you, as MaDD is not yet a diagnosable disorder

Personally, some ways it negatively impacts, or has impacted me in the past: emotions feeling more real for people in my head than anything in my real life, embarrassment/anxiety of letting my daydreams show on my face in front of people, paranoia regarding mind readers despite knowing they don't exist, injuring myself from acting out daydream scenes, forgetting to eat/drink/take care of basic hygiene in favour of daydreaming or just losing track of time, dissociation, derealisation/depersonalisation, second hand distress from my paras

Anything like that and more can be counted as your daydreams being maladaptive. The coiner of the term, Dr Eli Somer, has actually made a list of proposed diagnostic criteria, should MaDD ever get to be in the DSM. You can find that here

2. DID/OSDD and MaDD have significant overlap/comorbidity and MaDD has been proposed as a dissociative disorder itself (for a research paper about this see here) but one is in no way required for the other

I'm not a system, but I am very vocally supportive of them because my best friend(s) is, that and the comobidity is why you might see a little system content on my blog

3. Para is a term used by the immersive and maladaptive daydreaming communities to describe any character within a daydream. Anyone/thing that exists in real life or as a spiritual concept can't be considered a para unless they are directly part of your daydreams

There are other terms such as parame (a para you daydream from the POV of), paraself (a version of yourself in a daydream), veritbond (a para that feels more independent and has a deeper connection and meaning to you), and paracosm (a world in which a daydream takes place). So, a lot of terms get thrown around without people really knowing what they mean, especially when it comes to mental health awareness. I am definitely guilty of this, which is why when i am corrected i am trying to make a point to share the correction with others.

So. I was talking with my therapist an came around to the fact that I come up with stories in my head to fall asleep, something that people frequently say is Maladapative Daydreaming. But my therapist informed me that no, its not.

Maladaptive Daydreaming is only maladaptive if it is actively impeding function.

So, if your stories you come up with before bed aren't screwing over you or your sleep schedule, by all means, continue to make fanfiction in your head!

I've got a page for each paracosm and para and the page layout is quite similar to actual fandom wikis which is pretty satisfying for someone who relies heavily of them. ultimate daydreamer's guide • other madd info posts • masterlist || Every so often I see a newcomer a little confused by the terminology the Daydreaming Community tends to use, which is fair — we've made up a lot of words! This post is gonna explain the most common ones.

Para: A daydream character. This can be an OC, Canon Character (ex: Tony Stark), or a Real Person (ex: Gerard Way). Paras may also be referred to as "OCs" or "Characters".

Veritbond: A very special type of para. The definition is vague in order to encompass a variety of experiences: A para that the daydreamer has a deep emotional connection to / A para that is on some level “sentient” or otherwise aware that they’re a para / A para that is autonomous on some level.

Parame: Main Character of your daydreams, the para you daydream through. You can have more than one. Often gets confused with Paraself.

Paraself: The self insert of the Daydreamer. Not all Daydreamers have one, and that’s totally normal. Often gets confused with “parame”, as people often make themselves the Main Character. Not always, of course.

Paracosm: A detailed imaginary world, can be about literally anything. Despite it being claimed by the Daydreaming Community, "paracosm" is an actual word that technically anyone can use if they wish.

since i am a half god (i scripted that the eternals were not robots to wipe out earth’s population, theyre more similar to greek gods) i am naturally more skilled in combat & languages, i was either taught by my mother or the other eternals, they can’t have children so once my mom gave birth to me magically, they were excited to teach me things

in Ilvermorny it is actually very common to perform wandless magic. so in year 3 i learned it, but it came more naturally to me because celestial magic (eternal magic) is performed better wandless.

i am an orphan lol but i was raised by phastos and most of the time the other eternals visited. i have a brother and soon to be scripted in relative/best friend @gaiaexploreslife *wink*

my powers are the same with my mom’s (the goddess of reality) so i kind of just spawn & destroy shit and make power fields etc. my magic is the most flexible among other eternals due to the learnable nature of wizard’s magic, so i can sometimes copy their powers (making weapons like thena, power blasts like kingo etc.) but my powers are more intuitive than an average wizard’s, example: even if i was unconscious my powers will still protect me untill i 100% ran out of energy. my power will prioritize my body even if i was unaware.

some abilities i can do with my magic: teleportation through time & space, reality wrapping, reality creation, reality destruction, healing powers (more like turning back time) reality travel, high intuition, power blasts, wizard spells, runes, creation of shields & weapons, extrrme strength in my eternal form & telekinesis
