Makoto is not a stranger to trying to care for something beautiful beyond boundaries, an outsider who admires and loves despite the distance between aquarium water and where he stands. It’s a world he isn’t privy to, one of being sustained by complete submersion, but his curious eyes and careful hands are drawn to the glass all the same. It becomes a routine during different chapters of his life: tending to these glimmering creatures, feeding them, watching them swim without knowing how often he’s really seen in return, but still choosing to look and care anyway.

He can’t pinpoint exactly what it is about goldfish that draws him in, after all this time. Maybe it lies in how they’re flecked in bright ornamental scales, compared to and admired and coveted like gold: readily, greedily. Maybe it lies more in how all of that admiration of beauty falls short of genuine care, how it’s loved insofar as it is flashy, or how it gets forgotten how natural and mortal the interior of them truly is. Beneath shimmering armor is flesh, is sinew, is a weaving of organic life like everything else alive and beloved.

Makoto extends a hand over the lip of the aquarium to drop some food flakes in.

He remembers the devastation of losing his first two fish, all of the guilt that blended with his grief back then. It felt personal, like failing, to try everything he could manage to extend care across an insurmountable divide and still be left with an empty tank in the end. He’s had to sit with that fear, that reality: he can’t protect everyone from the inevitability of Change or Time, but he’ll try to over and over again.

Makoto looks at Haru and remembers something he read about goldfish being considered an invasive species. There are warnings about how detrimental it can be, to release them into an environment and destroy its balance. Despite that warning, Makoto still gets stuck on the wild goldfish itself, what it looks like when set free. They’ve been reported to grow beyond any tank, swim vast distances, lose their ornamental oranges over generations until they return to their green-gold ancestry that lets them blend into everyone else… almost ordinary.

His eyes watch something, someone beloved circle their tank and wonder, not for the first time, how long they have left together. If he looks away for even a second, will they break out into a radiant future far beyond his gaze, or will they float in the water lifeless and beyond his reach? He’ll drive himself mad if he thinks about it all for too long.

Makoto sets his eyes on the present moment, on the fish seemingly content in the tank in his room, on his best friend sitting warm and close to his side. What matters more than any imagined or inevitable ending is that he’s been entrusted to care for them all anyway. Haru’s hand slips into his own and he doesn’t have to look down anymore to know that he’s being seen and cared for in return by someone far more precious than gold.

Haruka is Makoto's sugar daddy. Not literally but it sounded funny in my head. Anyway!

Haruka starts to earn a lot of money when brands use him in their ads and so on. Of course, he uses a part of this money to pay his bills and have a comfortable daily life, but it is a very small part. Another part, the largest, is kept in a savings account at the bank. And the third and last part, which is a little more than the first, although less than the second, is for Makoto.

Haruka knows that Makoto doesn't need his money to take care of the basics, because he has his own part-time job and his parents help him with one thing or another, but still whenever he asks if he has enough money for the month, he even offers to help him pay for the water or something, though Makoto always tells him it's not necessary.

I imagine that Makoto, although he does not live up to date with money, does not have enough to fulfill every whim that occurs to him. And that's where Haruka comes in.

When they are walking down the street and Makoto insists on going to a cheaper place to eat or that he would like to go to some place, but he has not enough money, Haruka assures him that they will go because he will pay for the food or the coffee or whatever.

If Haruka sees that Makoto is very interested in something in a store window and knows that he wants to buy it, but that he refuses to do so, preferring to use the money for transportation and food for the week, he goes and buys it for him at that moment, or later to give it as a surprise gift.

When they are talking and Makoto tells him with great emotion that a new video game, a book that catches his attention, a new console will come out, or that a band he likes will have a concert soon and in the city, things like that, Haruka is already looking at how to pay the presale even if the price is so high that he could use that amount of money to live well for two months.

Haruka: Makoto, they already announced the [insert new console name]

Makoto: Oh, yeah! It looks really good, right?

Haruka: Yes. By the way, I just paid for the presale.

Makoto: YOU WHAT?

Haruka: I bought it.

Makoto: How so???

Haruka: I saw the announcement, I entered the website and I paid for it. I thought you would want it, so I bought it.

Makoto: You bought a 500 dollar console?

Haruka: Yeah.

Makoto: But you bought it for me????

Haruka: That's exactly what I did, yes

Makoto: You didn't have to! Haru, you should use your money for something more important like yourself or you should save it for when you retire! Idk, you could even use it to buy a house.

Haruka: You're important. And I do have some savings for the future. I'm even saving my money for a house, but I want you to graduate first.

Makoto: Why?

Haruka: So we can find a house where we can live together. I mean, I think it's important that you like it. And I don't want to interrupt your studies.

Makoto: You're saving money for OUR house?

Haruka: Today you are more distracted than usual. Yes.

i was thinking about when makoto becomes a trainer/coach on team japan and the media interviews him and haru together after a competition. imagine for the entire interview, haru doesn't even say a word -- he just stares at makoto the whole time with a fond look on his face. immediately after, the interview is all over social media, just picture after picture, video edits, fan art, and memes of haru silently looking at this guy while smiling for two minutes straight. at the same time everyone is like... oh my god coach, tachibana is so cute and nice! he's talking so enthusiastically about how hard the athletes have worked. it's no wonder he supposedly gets along really well with everyone. and of course haru's staring at him #relatable and oh my god, did you know coach tachibana and nanase have actually been best friends since forever? they used to swim in competitions together, too! been really busy lately because i got a new job at the hospital and i barely have any time to go on here (or when i do have free time, i just spend it reading or watching documentaries).

working on a chaptered fic titled "mixtapes in braille"; it's an old work that i wrote for a different fandom that i'm no longer a part of, but i'm rewriting it entirely for rinharu (and side soumako) because they suit it better. in this story, rin and sousuke are ex-olympians that own an art jamming cafe, and rin is a nerd/romanticist that makes mixtapes. in this scene, our cafe owners are spying on makoharu. here's an excerpt for funsies:

i'm really enjoying taking my time rewriting this story because a) my writing has gotten a lot better than when i first wrote the story, b) a lot of people from my old fandom really liked the story because of the mixtape-making part of it (and that there's a surprise character that turns out to be blind in it, which is always interesting to write) and c) idk.. it was personally my favourite story to write ever (and a very good excuse to write in a ton of innuendos and dick jokes lmaooooo)

like, i truly believe sousuke and rin talk like frat boys when they're alone with just each other at times and make tons of dick jokes. idk. it's just my personal headcanon. let's hope i actually finish this one!

A Subtitler’s Hypothesis for the Timeline of the End of FS2

Be prepared for a novel here 😂

So the opening montage through the night pool scene is likely March (potentially early April, but no one is actually -seen- going to school yet, so probably end of March)

Although clearly everyone has some kind of arrangement or virtual accommodations with school, because they are ALL at training camp from April – August/September, maybe even through early October (so Haru, being out of the country away from school for a couple months? Paltry lol he did not quit school imo)

              -Nationals in DF were in August (high school nationals are in August, I checked lol), which was followed by the All Japan, however based on how warm everyone is dressed in Tokyo afterwards in FS2, it can’t be earlier than September/October-y 

Fukuoka Tournament – (late?) October – I say late based on those warm clothes again; I’ve worn shorts in early October in Tokyo before lol. And yet those in Iwatobi aren’t dressed too warmly yet, so it couldn’t be later than that. It doesn’t seem like a lot of time passed between the All Japan and Fukuoka, so they could both realistically be in October, even. But there’s two facts to sort of reverse engineer that this was Octoberish

-A Japanese fan pointed out the clock at sunset when Rin is showing his family his bronze medal, it’s around 5:10, and the sun is starting to set. Looking at sunset time maps, this would fit in October. (The sun sets in the late 5 o clock range in mid to late October in Fukuoka)

-Ikuya tells Ai in early December that Haru “got out of the hospital last month” aka November, which saying last month idk it makes it sound to me like it was a different month than the actual competition lol

But why is Ikuya and Ai’s convo in early December, you ask? With the phrase “last month,” there has to be a month in between Fukuoka and Haru going to Iwatobi. I would say there is no more than that based on Ikuya’s clothes in the scene. The girl, and others around are wearing wintery coats, yet Ikuya, compared with his coat in FS1 when everyone leaves for New Year, isn’t that bundled yet. So it’s cold, but not cold enough for Ikuya to be in full ‘winter mode’ yet, aka early December. So:

Fukuoka Tournament – October-y

Haru in the hospital for some length of time – November (with My MakoHaru heart, I’d vote he gets out before Makoto’s birthday lol ^^ BUT he does need to be out with a few weeks left in November so he has time to shoot the advertisement billboard, and get his stuff ready/school affairs in order to go to Iwatobi in December)

-sidebar, after this convo would be where Ai goes to Hungary to study abroad (maybe after New Year); the line “soon after entering university” has to mean within his first year of school, so away he goes lol

(Even if the tournament & hospitalization were both in October somehow, and “last month” meant October [the deciding factor would be how long you think he was in the hospital for], this would still be mid or late November because of the Ikuya clothes thing, and needing the time for the billboard and school, so everything still applies lol)

Haru in Iwatobi – December; where it makes sense he wouldn’t leave before New Year, when people are home to celebrate

So January he would get his affairs in order in Iwatobi and Tokyo, and be gone from late January/February through the end of March

Why I think the epilogue is the end of March: We’ve got both new students showing up in Tokyo, and also Momo hasn’t had his send off race yet – it’s a between period where things are happening over the break. Further evidence, in ES1 when they go to the send off race, a calendar showing a third week in a month is seen (you can see a digit in the teens in the week above, and a digit beginning with 2 in the week below) – there is no month, but it can only be March, because February would be too early, and April way too late.

Unrelated to the timeline lol: so in my headcanon world, Rin & Makoto have come to Hungary for some form of tournament: Haru is back now (precise verbs were “is back” & “is returning”), so his rehab must be in its end stages. There could be a tournament happening in Hungary that will be Haru’s first ‘official’ tournament of his return, and Rin is there to compete, and Makoto is there to support/shadow trainers, etc (that could have happened through a connection with Azuma, Nao, or his school, or even Natsuya take your pick lol). After said tournament, Haru may stay in Hungary a few more weeks to get his stuff together, then return to Tokyo.

Why is it a tournament, not some kind of training camp? We were given one tiny, tiny clue lol: When the world championships were in Budapest last year, Free’s website made some kind of note about broadcasting or something I cannot recall tbh lol but the important thing is they called it “Hungary Tournament,” the same way they call all the tournaments in FS. Smart Japanese fans pointed out that nowhere in any media coverage of the Budapest championships was it called “Hungary Tournament.” So it had the vibe of a subtle wink to fans lol, but it could be either one (headcanon stays almost the same lolol).

Honestly, my romantic ships have to be the other phantom thieves with Joker (minus Futaba cause I like them better as siblings, and also minus Morgana for obvious reasons). Idk I just like the dynamic that Joker has with the others.

Joker/Akechi. Look, I found the two of them neat in P5 and then Royal came along with giving Akechi an actual social rank and I really found them neat. But then fucking Robbie Daymond and Xander Mobus had to make a song together as the characters. Enemies to Frenemies (reluctant allies really) to Lovers really hits with them

Sojiro/Wakaba, just listening to when Sojiro would talk about Wakaba and then seeing the alternative ending with Royal and how Sojiro is there... I absolutely loved them.

3 platonic dynamics I love:

Ann/Shiho (I wish there was more. Thank god for Royal having some moments, but I wanted to visit Shiho in the hospital with Ann or something)

Ryuji/Ann (tbh I love their best friend energy they have going on. Not a single braincell between them and I love it)

Sojiro/Futaba/Joker. I'm sorry but good adoptive father/daughter relationships feel so hard to find and I just love that family so much. It's the found family dynamic too ngl

Honorable mention - Futaba/Yusuke. They're idiots and I love their friendship

3 favorite moments in canon:

Saving Futaba and her learning the truth (honestly her whole arc) was just so amazing. It was so heartbreaking, but so satisfying to be able to help her.

The alternative ending for Royal is a favorite because it's unbelievably bittersweet. Like you should feel happy when you see it. You should think that it's the right choice because everyone got their happy ending, but it's just so heartwrenching and I love it so so much (I cry every damn time I see it).

Every Persona awakening was just amazing to watch. Oh my god and Akechi's "second" persona reveal? It's so amazing and I wish I could watch it all again like I've never seen it before because damn it was so cool.

3 favorite headcanons:

Yusuke ended up taking interest once when Ann and Haru were showing Makoto and Futaba how to paint their nails. Yusuke stated that the girls could do better and then gave them beautiful nail art (he did get a bit thrown off when Futaba wanted nails specific to the Kamen Riders, but he did it).

Ryuji, Mishima, and Joker all just crowded around that gatcha machine in Akihabara or in the Arcade trying to get specific figures and dolls. Mishima and Ryuji taking turns and failing and then Joker, with max stats being smug because obviously he can do it and then he fails too. They eventually suck up their pride and beg Shinya to win them the Jack Frost doll.

Ann visiting Shiho for regular meet ups and telling her all about the new friends she made. Sometimes Ann brings mini paintings that Yusuke drew or anime character stickers that Futaba had extras for. Shiho hasn't met these people, but Ann talks highly about Shiho to them so they all want to give the girl little presents. It is very exciting when Shiho is finally introduced to Ann's new friends. Shiho is very proud of Ann for the happiness she managed to find.

3 least favorite things about it:

Oh fucking boy I hated all the crap Ryuji got. He's such a good best friend, he sacrificed his life! And instead of the "Oh my god, I'm so happy you're okay!" that he deserved, he was pummeled for comedic effect?? Fuck you Atlas.

Again, with Ryuji, specifically with how he was treated by Morgana throughout the entire game. And then when Ryuji stood up for himself, Morgana was suddenly the victim?? Haru didn't even get her own spotlight because of this little shit.

And hey, another least favorite that ties in with the others. Fucking Haru. She was in her dad's goddamn palace. She was trying to fix things so she could have her dad back. It should've been emotional and it should've made us attached and love Haru. But honestly, I was mostly frustrated with the palace and dealing with Morgana that when Haru's dad died it was just an "Oh no! Anyway..." moment where I moved on so quickly. Thank god for Strikers helping me actually appreciate Haru more.

OOH YEAH THEM!! The comparison is so very vibes-based BUT think about it!!

Friend who is driven by their curiosity, by their desire (whether to play or eat honey; whether to swim or eat mackerel), and gathers friends around them by acting on said impulses

Friend who is timid and scared a lot of the time but even more than that is kind, so they learn to be brave by approaching some of the things that scare them with friends by their side

Surprise! They’re besties! They find strength in each other (motivation, safety, a reason to move and a reason to rest) and enjoy each other’s company!

All I’m saying is: find the difference between these two moments

I don’t have any solid hc moments in mind to share, but I like imagining them sticking close to each other, facing new whims and fears with brave faces because they know they’re not alone.

(… and also them both hand-waving away comments about their inseparable closeness by being like, “yeah, this is normal. Pooh Bear and Piglet behavior. Hashtag casual”)

What I like about them

I love Makoto's arc of realizing she's just a tool of adults who don't care about her, and its not worth it to compromise herself just for their approval. It's very powerful and relatable. I also like her confidence and intelligence. She really is like an honorary second leader to the Phantom Thieves who keeps them grounded. Without her the Thieves probably would have been found out a lot sooner. Akira can be...a little reckless, lol.

Also. She's hot.

What I dislike about them

Ok, before I get into this rant, let me first say: Makoto is one of my favorite Thieves. She's slowly lowered in my internal ranking of them over the course of the past year as I've soured on where her arc ended up and other Thieves overtake her as I grow to better appreciate their arcs, but I still love her, and I say all of this as a Makoto stan.

That said. Literally everything about her becoming a cop. It's not only an insult to Akira's trauma and a flat-out contradiction of the game's core themes, but it also walks back any progress Makoto makes in her character arc. Because, let's face it, Makoto can be a bit of an authoritarian. She's very uncompromising and stubborn in her point of view. Her confidant wants you to think that her friendship with Eiko expands her worldview, but in then the entire situation resolves with Makoto being Right and using her Fist of Justice to force Eiko into doing what Makoto thinks is best. Like a cop would. What happened to Makoto's flaw of being too stubborn and close minded? The narrative ends up taking Makoto's side and saying she was right all along. She doesn't learn anything.

I should probably write a more in depth analysis of her at some point because it is SO frustrating but I'm really tired of the fandom taking it out on her when its the writers' fault for screwing up what was intended to be her character arc.

Favorite moment

Her Awakening, no contest. One of the best Awakenings in the whole game.

Least favorite moment

Any scene that revolves around her dream to become a cop. Especially when the game forces Joker to support her in that goal after everything he's been through.

A situation with this character that I want to see explored more

This is probably obvious by now, but I want to see Makoto realizing her dream of becoming a "good cop" is fundamentally flawed and changing her career goals accordingly, deciding to reform the system in a way that doesn't turn her into just another cog in the machine that nearly ate her up in the first place.

Makoharu!!! It's my second favorite Persona 5 ship after Akeshu. I Love Them. Their friendship in the game is really sweet, I love how Haru is able to get Makoto to relax and loosen up a little, and how they're both ruthless but in contrasting ways. They're like opposites and yet the same (haha, like akeshu). They're just so cute and wholesome. And the Aesthetic is perfection. I adore their showtime.

Makoto and Akechi, also Makoto and Ryuji. The Potential of both of those friendships is tragically untapped in canon other than Makoto and Ryuji's Showtime, which to be fair, is amazing.

An assortment of headcanons

She plays animal crossing and has her island organized Just So. The Thieves make fun of her for practically running a military state with how organized it is and how stale its aesthetic becomes with everything made of metal and stone. Haru helps liven the place up by planting flowers all around the island.

Makoto becomes like a surrogate older sister to Akane and becomes the kind of person for Akane that she wishes Sae had been for her.

Makoto and Haru go to the same college and become roommates (oh my god they were roommates).

Fun fact about me is whenever almost anyone I follow reblogs an ask game I’m like “so did they do that for the game or for some other secret reason” and then i send an ask and go “this is terrible. they definitely reblogged that for some secret non-ask-game reason that they just didn’t say. Sexuality Headcanon: LESBIAN Gender Headcanon: cis A ship I have with said character: as much as i love makoharu, i think sumiharu also has potential. in the performing arts au that i will never write, they are both ballerinas, and sumi is a younger student who looks to haru for help and inspiration and also because she thinks haru is very pretty, EDITED TO ADD: as i was kindly reminded, i also think that sumi should see the value of hitting things very hard with an axe A BROTP I have with said character: Morgana and Haru are trauma-bonded. First impression: Wow! Fan content has a lot of stuff about this funny character who’s sweet on the outside but actually really sadistic! I can’t wait to see more!

Impression now: For fucks sake, stop glorifying your abusive dad, do something interesting, do anything, express complex emotions, why are you so fucking boring?

Favorite moment: I like in Strikers when she told Zenkichi she hated pigs with a smiling face.
