If you had to pick one thing that would be wherever you go, it’d be flowers. Nature was a big part of who you were, growing up with all different kinds of educational books on different types of plants, sceneries, and of course flowers. It wasn’t just a phase you had as a kid, it stuck with you for as long as you could remember.

Though, you wish you had the courage to share your knowledge.

It was a struggle getting through life while being too nervous to strike conversations or speaking up. You had moments here and there, but you still felt like a shadow. It was until a certain someone helped you out of your shell.

Mafuyu Asahina, one of the top students in the district. Everyone knew about her, she was perfect. Perfect looks, perfect grades, perfect all around. She was beloved by all your peers, who had gotten help form her at least once. You, however, never received her help. She was intimidating to you, even if she was a sweetheart. Someone that important near someone so unknown? What if it stained her reputation?

The first time you two talked, she initiated conversation. Seeing you struggle with the assignment in front of you caught her eye, why not help?

“So if you flip the equation like this…”

“Ah, I see it now… thank you, Asahina.”

She simply smiled at you, but didn’t move her seat. She stayed close next to you despite finishing helping you.

But you couldn’t shake the feeling something was… off. Off about Mafuyu. The way she smiled looked like it held 0 emotion, and the way her eyes lost any light left in them the moment she turned away. It was, well, weird.

“Say, (name), is this anything you like? Anything at all?”

The question was sudden, breaking the silence in a bold manner. But she seems genuine about the question, maybe she wants to get to know you better?

Someone wants to know you better..

“Actually… I like flowers a lot. I work part time at a florist place. There’s so many different kinds! And they all have different meanings and they can get really deep sometimes and-“

Ah, there it is. Maybe you said too much already.

“And?”

Mafuyu looked at you with curiosity, waiting for you to finish you’re ramble. Did she care enough to listen?

“And they’re all so beautiful..”

You didn’t know why you were so embarrassed to talk about you’re love for flowers. Whenever you rambled, even to your parents, you got embarrassed, like this was a silly hobby for a little kid. Despite all the reassurance, you couldn’t help it.

“I agree, flowers are quite pretty. A friend of mine also enjoys them a bit, specifically carnations.”

“Ah! Carnations are beautiful, with vast meanings depending on the color. While pink carnations are considered “lovely” and carry out the meaning of love, yellow carnations are the complete opposite. They resemble unhappiness and rejection. White carnations though..”

You’re voice died down, realizing you were rambling once again. But also, once again, Mafuyu didn’t avert her eyes.

And for once, you felt like someone was listening.

“What if you stopped by the flower shop later? It doesn’t have to be today. I can even let you pick out some carnations for that friend of yours!”

“Hm.. we can do today. Thank you, (Name). I’ll be looking forward to it.”

And with that, Mafuyu left the classroom. The conversation replayed in your mind over and over, something didn’t feel right…

Whether it was the weird feeling that brewed in your chest when you realized Mafuyu never looked away, or the hallow look in her eyes. Something didn’t seem right, but it’s too soon to pry.

But it wasn’t too soon to squeal about your next customer.

The longer your shift went on, the less hope you had Mafuyu would appear. After all, it was already late and the shop closes in just an hour. Would she have the time for all this anyway? Doubt flooded your mind, only thinking of all the harsh words said to you.

That’s right, you’re just some flower obsessed freak. Everyone thinks you go on dates with your ferns, not with real people. Maybe this was all just some-

“I’m sorry I got here so late. Archery club kept me longer than usual today.”

“It’s all good! I thought you didn’t know where this was, I never did give clear directions…”

“I found it anyways, it’s the only flower shop around the area.”

“Right, I forget about that sometimes.”

Truth be told, customers weren’t so common. Of course there were the regulars you’ve chatted with here and there, but other customers aren’t frequent. You’d think business would be booming some other florist place if the only one around was this empty.

Silence fell over you two, the warm lights complimenting Mafuyu’s face. How could someone be so perfect with so many flaws?

“This flower is pretty, what’s it called?”

You examined the plant in her hand, recognizing it pretty fast. A pink camellia.

“That’s a camellia! The one you’re holding is pink, which resembles longing and pining. Camellias themselves mean love, all different kinds. White camellias are all about adoration, they’re something you’d give to someone beloved. Red camellias are a deeper kind of love, passion.”

For once, you didn’t feel embarrassed by your rambles. You actually felt proud. Mafuyu remained intrigued and even continued asking more questions.

“Are they associated with love because of their color variation?”

“I think so, most flower meanings are random. But camellias’ are consistent.”

“Are white camellias better to give to a friend? Or a whole other flower entirely?”

“White camellias are a perfect gift for a dear friend, but yellow roses are quite literally called friendship flowers.”

“Does it mean anything if I picked a pink camellia when I could have picked a white one?”

The first question you had to think about. That’s more of a statistics thing, right? She could have randomly picked any, red, white or pink. But perhaps, after today…

That's where it all started. Just this one text made you wake up at 3am to bake something for your girlfriend's birthday.

The thought of baking literal fruit kind of scared you so you decides to set for something simpler than a cake! It took you a while to find a recipe because let's be honest... you're NOT asking Mafuyu's mom for help, you'd rather spend some additional hour yourself on finding just right recipe.

It's finally 8am and you just finished decorating final bath of cookies. You ended up making around 3, 3rd one being the biggest. First one was just a test, second was a small teaser before final cookies and their ones were final!

You packed cookies into light purple box, hid it in your bag and rushed to the park nearby Miyamasuzaka Academy so that you could give Mafuyu gift, without her getting into any troubles.

You were just looking around for purple headed girl just to be startled by voice from behind you.

"I'm here."

"ACK! Oh, Mafuyu! Hi!"

You swear you got so scared, you almost punched her... ON HER BIRTHDAY! It's good you actually remember her voice by heart... both voices of hers.

"Why did you wanted me to sneak out on a break?"

"Oh it's just a second I promise! I only wanted to..."

You took out the box you prepared earlier and offered it to her carefully, not wanting your hard work to suddenly get destroyed.

"I only wanted to wish you Happy Birthday! I hope this year will treat you well~"

She carefully picked up box from your hands as if it was made from porcelain that could break any second. She finally opened it in front of you as she knew you probably wanted to know her reaction.

"Thank you, it's..."

She was stunned. Most would think in that moment that she saw something horrifying, something she didn't liked. But you knew her well enough to see it was quite the opposite! If she didn't liked it, she'd already told you her criticism, but she just stared at it with slightly parted lips.

"It's...?"

You tried nudging her a bit, curious what she'll say.

"It's... it seems warm. As in... my chest."

She took out one of the cookies and took a small bite for taste testing. She may've not realized it herself but you could see her gaze and shoulders relaxing, it was obvious she enjoyed the effort you put into her gift.

"I'm glad I could make this day a bit warmer for you then!"

“You made a dad noise when you sat down.” Mafuyu pointed out, sending Uenoyama into a fit of muffled giggles. “You went ‘hmmmrph.’”

“W-What? No I didn’t! That was the chair!” The drummer stood up, face aflame. “See, look!” He sat down again, only for that cursed grunt to escape. Damn, he really was making dad noises…

“Heh, old man.” Uenoyama snorted. “We’ll have to gather our money up to get you one of those eclectic chairs for your apartment.”

“Oh, like in UP!” Mafuyu added delightfully, sending Haruki into a howling fit of laughter. Akihiko stood once more, indignified.

“You shut your face, pretty boy- you’re older than me! And you two- That is it! Come here!” He gave chase, running at the giggly highschoolers as they tried scrambling away. It was a short lived game of tag, ending when Akihiko tripped Uenoyama and grabbed Mafuyu at the same time. Down they went, effectively pinned beneath the drummer with ease.

“Wait- wait, Kaji-san! We didn’t meaahahhahan ihihihit! The brunette’s cries for forgiveness fell on deaf ears as his sides were ruthlessly dug into. Pinned on his stomach, all he could do was thrash and squirm to the best of his abilities. “Dohohohohon’t!”

“Ahehehehhea! I’m shahahharry- I’m shahahahhahrry!” Mafuyu cried out, pawing at the hand drilling into his belly, unable to fight back. “Kahahahhaji-sahhahahan!”

“What’s this? Suddenly showing me respect? Too late, boys; you’ve crossed the line!” Akihiko laughed evilly above them, relishing their giggle fits and pleas. “What’s wrong- you like being tickled, don’t you? That’s why you were so rude? You can just ask next time you want my attention, you brats!”

In the background, Haruki looked gloomily in a mirror, checking his face and roots for grey. “Is it true? Am I really an old man? Oh, I knew this day would come…”

“Oi, Haru- get over here and help me wreck these kids!” Akihiko grinned at him. “I heard the sound of their laughter has a fountain of youth effect!”

“Hmm, okay!” Haruki grinned as he ran over, adding to the fray and sending the pair into even stronger fits of mirth. “Let’s teach these little kids to respect their elders!”

Mafuyu has nightmares sometimes.

It doesn’t scare her when she blinks her eyes open.

It just…feels empty. Her heart replaced with a void.

She has Nightcord at 25:00 of course

But every time they make her smile…it doesn’t stay.

When will it stay?

In the morning, she simply does her usual but instead of staying inside and organizing her room (again and again)

She puts up a front and then walks to a nearby store

Well, she planned on walking to the park until she bumped straight into someone

“Ah! I’m so sorry!” Is she? Is she really or is it just another act she put on for everyone?

She steps back and looks at your face, still startled

“It’s no worries!”

“Please, let me do something for you.” Really Mafuyu? Are you that desperate for attention?

You shake your head and pick up your groceries with her

“It’s ok! Hmm…if you really want to do something for me, how about getting a drink with me around the corner to the cafe nearby? I heard their matcha lattes are great!”

“Of course!” She wouldn’t know. She can’t taste after all.

You two go to the place and just talk. Just usual talking. She tries to shift the conversation towards you and you shift it onto her.

Like…she matters.

You eventually trade numbers with her and she talks about you in the Sekai with Miku and her friends

“Woahh! Mafuyu making friends with someone genuinely?! That’s a milestone right there!”

“Do you actually want them to be friends with you though?”

“I would like to see if you do too. It would be nice to see you comfortable around someone that’s not just us.”

She thinks for a second about how you acted in the cafe

You didn’t shift all the attention on yourself, you didn’t pressure her to do something, you…you didn’t ask her about how well her grades are…

The void…isn’t eating her up. Isn’t throbbing.

For the next few times she’s with you, she learns about you and you learn about her.

She feels strange. Like how she felt about Kanade’s song.

Mafuyu manages to sneak out successfully and get to the park when you ask if she can one night

And she sees you sitting on the swings, when you see her, you wave and she waves back.

Kanamafu Roommates AU [3/?]

Staring at the ceiling, Mafuyu blinked slowly, not energetic enough to get up or do anything, but not sleepy enough to fade into unconsciousness. Her right hand was hanging off the bed, resting in a bowl of cold water that Kanade had propped up on a stool. She had insisted that Mafuyu lie down while she went to call her school and inform them that she’d be absent. Mafuyu raised her good hand, flexing her fingers and remembering the feeling of Kanade’s fingers between hers. She sighed, lowered her hand, and facepalmed, trying to tamp down the butterflies fluttering in her stomach. Her efforts were not aided by Kanade’s sudden appearance in the doorway as she walked in, gingerly holding a bowl of soup, a folded towel, and the wrap from the kitchen.

“I brought you some ramen.”

Kanade said, setting the bowl down and reaching out for Mafuyu’s hand. Mafuyu, taking the hint, raised her hand out of the water. She winced as the air hit her hand, cold drafts slicing at the raw skin.

“Warm soup in bed? I’m not sick, Kanade.”

Mafuyu said, surprising herself with the attempt at a joke.

You don’t have to go to this much trouble.

She wanted to speak, but the words wouldn’t leave her mouth. Kanade raised her eyebrows slightly and shrugged, grabbing the towel and patting at Mafuyu’s hand to dry it off. She frowned as Mafuyu sucked in a breath, pulling her hand back.

“I know, but…”

Kanade trailed off, gently continuing to dry off Mafuyu’s hand. She reached out and held Mafuyu’s other hand, giving it reassuring squeezes every time she dabbed at the water dripping down Mafuyu’s arm.

“You’ve done so much for me- since you moved in you’ve helped cook, clean, shop for groceries… I wanted to do something for you.”

Her gaze softened as she locked eyes with Mafuyu, a spark in her eyes as the corner of her lip lifted into a smile. Mafuyu found herself looking away, cheeks tingling with a familiar warmth. Kanade put down the towel, reaching for the wrap and winding it slowly around Mafuyu’s hand. She went around each finger, making sure to cover every spot of injured skin. Satisfied with her work, she gave Mafuyu a pack of cold water to cool her hand and sat down on the side of her bed.

Suddenly, Mafuyu was all too aware that she was, again, lying in Kanade’s bed. She curled up, pulling the blankets up to cover her flushed face. She thought for a moment, how she wished Kanade would reach out, caress her cheek, hug her tenderly as she had by the sink. A shiver flickered down her spine, tiny goosebumps popping up on her arms.

“Are you cold?”

Kanade asked, noticing the tremor that ran down Mafuyu’s body. Caught in the middle of her pining, Mafuyu nodded, finding it easier to agree than explain. Kanade tied off the wrap and stared down at the comforter below her. She hesitated for a second before leaning over and maneuvering over Mafuyu, who was still lying in bed. Before Mafuyu could question what she was doing, or confirm what she thought she was doing, Kanade had slipped under the covers, lying down next to Mafuyu. She reached out, wrapping a warm arm around Mafuyu’s shoulders and pulling her close.

“I’ll keep you warm.”

A slight blush spread across her cheeks as she slotted her head into the crook of Mafuyu’s shoulder, accidentally pressing her face into Mafuyu’s neck. The warm contact caused Mafuyu to unconsciously lean her head down, resting her chin on Kanade’s head. She let out a soft sigh, relaxing into Kanade’s gentle embrace as the soft scent of flowers enveloped her again.

“Mm… Okay. Thank you.”

The two laid there, Mafuyu eventually drifting off to sleep. Kanade glanced up at her, noticing the bags under her eyes. She hadn’t been sleeping well.

Well… The last week hasn’t exactly been easy for her.

Kanade reminded herself, twirling a strand of Mafuyu’s hair absentmindedly. Her fingers moved almost unconsciously, nimbly separating the hair into three portions as she thought, weaving them over and under and through until she had tied a small braid into Mafuyu’s hair.

Still, I wish she wouldn’t work so hard.

She lifted the tiny braid in her hands, staring at it for a moment before placing it back down. It actually worked quite well into Mafuyu’s regular hairstyle, slipping along the side of her face and framing her cheek. She was beautiful, Kanade thought, admiring the way the soft light from the window shone on her skin and gave her purple hair an almost unearthly glow. The angle of the sunlight shifted onto Mafuyu’s closed eyes. Her eyelids twitched as she seemed to wake up slightly, blinking at the sudden brightness. Kanade lifted one hand, blocking the sunlight and allowing Mafuyu’s eyes to adjust.

“Sorry, I forgot to close the curtains. I can go get them-”

Kanade said, starting to move away and sit up. Mafuyu drowsily hummed her dissatisfaction with that idea, reaching her free arm out and pulling Kanade down into a tight embrace. Kanade yelped as she was yanked back, hitting the bed and feeling her side beginning to sting with slight pain. She rubbed her hip, blowing out a breath.

Was the bed always this solid..?

Glancing down, she quickly realized that she was not, in fact, lying on the bed. Mafuyu had somehow tugged her down so the two were stacked on top of each other, hugging her and holding her in place like a human weighted blanket. Judging by her contented sigh, it seemed the pressure wasn’t bothering her at all. Kanade struggled slightly, trying to extricate herself from Mafuyu’s hold, but quickly gave up. Mafuyu was much stronger than she looked, her arms keeping Kanade on top of her with an iron strength. Kanade laid back down, wrapping her arms around Mafuyu’s shoulders and resigning herself to resting in the bed with Mafuyu. Not that she minded that. Their new position placed her head above Mafuyu’s, blocking the sunlight and keeping the upper half of her face in shadow.

Suddenly, Mafuyu moved one of her hands to Kanade’s head, pulling her down and prompting a squeak from the smaller girl. She pressed her cheek to Kanade’s, mumbling something incoherent. Kanade could only make out a few words, but figured it was probably just drowsy rambling. She patted Mafuyu’s head gently, relaxing her head and allowing her face to rest on Mafuyu’s hair. She smelled like citrus. A warm scent, simultaneously a tangy zing and a comforting sweetness. It filled her lungs, warming her like a gentle embrace. Kanade sighed softly, her body almost melting into Mafuyu’s arms.

“Love… You.”

The sudden whisper caught Kanade off guard, so quiet she barely believed she’d heard it. She stiffened, doubting her own ears.

“Wh… What…?”

What you were standing in front of was a claw machine filled with various plush animals who were too cute for your eyes!

Each animal in the claw machine reminded you of some of your friends. Like how this pink cat reminded you of Mizuki, as it is as adorable as Mizuki is! Or how a smaller orange sparrow next to it reminds you of Ena. Since a sparrow may be small but it is loud

As Mafuyu was standing right beside you looking at the plushies you were telling her about.

"They're just normal plushies.. I don't see anything special about them."

"Besides, I still think you're way more cute than the soft toys."

Mafuyu stated bluntly as she continued staring at the plushies to see how they are specially cute. You were lucky she didn't glance at you with how pink your face was.

You knew Mafuyu was blunt but you didn't expect her to outright flirt with you just like that! Although you did enjoy the compliment since it was rare to see Mafuyu compliment you without doing anything.

You told her, only to not get a response of Mafuyu getting close to the machine.

As you walk in front of the machine. Prepared to teach Mafuyu how to use it.

"First you use this controller to move.."

As you glance at Mafuyu for a bit. Only to see her make an expression she has never made before. She looks.. Determined?

✧ but when it turns out, that's not how it is and you really belong here... he's confused but obviously not gonna do much about it

✧ at first, he was very startled by your loud personality and constant rambling and need to run all around

✧ tho they ended up talking quite a bit or so it was more of Emu rambles... so both girls remembers each other!

✧ their relationship is also very slow to develop due to meeting rarely, but if not counting long breaks, you could say it develops fairly quickly!

✧ I feel like Emu would try being sweet at first and kinda just hinting she likes Kanade, while Kanade also throws few hints but she'd be the first to confess since she felt like this mystery was confusing her slowly more and more...

He stalks you obviously but you don't really give a shit you still keep up your facade but it's taking a straine on your health

So when he does talk to you face to face you give him the best smile you can muster

He talks to you like you already know each other

When he asks you the questions you answer honestly which inevitably makes him a little upset

So when you get off of work he follows you

Day after day you start to realize that it's literally only you and him

Soon your facade slips and eventually you show your true colors

No emotions, the Aura around you is as cold as ice
