@thediktatortot sent me some song recommendations with specific harringrove-coded lyrics and I decided I wanted to write something for as many different ones as I have the juice, because I was genuinely inspired and thank you thank you friend for the recommends!

First Song: Lemon Boy by Cavetown

Here’s the thing about Billy Hargrove:

He’s simple. 

Everyone (all the girls) think he’s this complicated thing. This person with a million different layers and a million different faces. And, Steve guesses, that’s sorta true. 

But really, he’s kinda easy to understand. 

He needs kindness. 

There’s not much more to it than that. 

And sure, maybe the why is where the layers come in. He needs kindness because he never gets any blah, blah, blah. 

But at the end of the day, a few nice things, and he’s loyal forever. 

Steve figured it out kind of accidentally. 

Because Billy forgot his textbook in American History, and they sit alphabetically by last name in that class, and so, Steve kinda nudged his book over so that Billy could look on and wouldn’t lose any participation points that day for not being able to answer questions and read when the teacher asked, and so, it was one tiny nice thing. 

Okay, maybe it was more than one tiny nice thing. 

Because it was a chain of tiny nice things. 

Starting with the textbook, and finishing with Steve sucking Billy off in the backseat of the Camaro to “blow off some steam”.

After the textbook, came the apology. 

Half-assed, for sure, and written in scribbly, smudgy handwriting. Not signed, but clear who it’s from. 

Sorry for messing you up like that.

Steve returned it with his own note, dropped pointedly on Billy’s desk in class. 

Sorry for being weird. I promise nothing shady was going on with your sister. I get it though. No hard feelings.

Billy glanced at Steve through his lashes, and Steve was a little disappointed that Billy hadn’t forgotten his history textbook. 

The next nice thing was a coffee. 

Because Steve made himself coffee and a breakfast sandwich on the mornings he decided he didn’t care if he was late to school. 

He was driving to school, listening to an old mixtape he found at the bottom of his glovebox, and he saw Billy. Head bent low, walking along the side of the road. 

HIs hands were in his pockets, and the line of his shoulders was tense. He was all but stomping, and the clear aura of pissed off somehow didn’t deter Steve from pulling along next to him, reaching over to roll down the passenger side window. 

“Hargrove! You want a ride.”

The stomping stopped, but Billy gave no other indication that he had heard Steve. 

The BMW’s engine idled. 

“C’mon, man. It’s like three more miles to school. Lemme drive you.”

When Billy turned to get into the car, Steve was why he was keeping his head down and his shoulders around his ears. 

He had a big black shiner, a bruise covering his whole left eye. 

He sat low in the passenger seat, cranking the window back up. 

“Looks nasty.”

Billy only grunted in response.

“Car in the shop?”

Billy snorted. 

“My dad took my keys.”

Ah. 

Probably clocked him in the face, too. 

Steve’s no stranger to it, even if his dad’s more of a smacker than a puncher. He also had a weird realization that Billy’s dad must be left-handed, like Billy himself. 

Steve took his coffee out of the cup holder, passing it to Billy. 

“You look like you need this more than I do.”

The next nice thing was kinda the one that pushed them over the line. 

Over the line from acquaintances that once beat each other up to actual sort of friends. 

It was also not a nice thing Steve did.

It was one Billy did.

And Steve wasn't even there to witness it.

All he saw was the blue green bruising on Tommy H.'s jaw.

"When are you gonna learn, Tommy. Don't pick fights you can't win."

Tommy nearly snarled at Steve from the bleachers, catching himself last minute before he made a seen in front of the entire P.E. class.

Steve only smirked, and took his seat in front of Tommy.

The coach stood in front of the bored class, explaining that they'd be running laps today.

It's what they did whenever he was too hungover to actually make them so anything.

But it's fine. Steve's always been a good runner, and it means he doesn't have to think about anything or talk to anyone while he went.

He tensed when he felt Tommy lean forward behind him, getting in close to murmur in Steve's ear.

"Found yourself a new attack dog, huh, Stevie? Hargrove nearly knocked my teeth out when I called you a pussy. You givin' it up for him, too?"

"Careful, Buddy. You sound jealous."

Tommy snorted and leaned back, but Steve's gut was rolling.

Billy had taken down Tommy for saying something shitty behind Steve's back.

It made Steve's face hot.

Billy showed up twenty minutes late to P.E. He gave Coach a note, and started his laps with the rest of the class.

Steve slowed his pace to get next to him.

Billy's knuckled were a little bruised, and he had a scratch mark on his neck.

Tommy did always fight dirty.

"Heard you gave it to Tommy."

"He deserved it." Billy kept his eyes forward, his pace steady.

"Yeah. He's a toolbag."

They jogged in silence.

Steve opened his mouth to ask something, when Billy piped up.

"Are we, like, friends?"

"I think so. Unless you make a habit of beating the shit out of people for calling your non-friends pussies."

Steve caught Billy's eye and grinned. Billy's smile was reluctant and small, but Steve liked it.

"Last to finish ten laps owes the winner a milkshake." Steve clapped Billy on the back, and took off, easily weaving through the gaggle of junior girls walking in front of them.

"Harrington, you bastard!"

13. Dumbest thing they’ve ever done

OK. They've definitely smoked nutmeg, and tripped so badly, they were running naked, sweating, crying. (For those who don't know: never smoke nutmeg lmao. It's notorious for the most vivid and horrific hallucinations, as well as painful side effects afterward.)

Harry

Can't you just see him doing some Mission Impossible nonsense and tearing down the entire banister? Or causing a small but highly damaging fire in the kitchen?

However, it will be outdone in coming chapters. Rest assured of that.

Tom

Well. Okay, aside from the obvious. He's definitely that kid who won't just take your word for it; he has to touch the hotplate to know it burns. Has to feel the blade to know it's sharp. A lot of going stone cold silent as his father yells and his nan quietly looks for a bandage.

17. Quotes, songs, poems, etc. that I associate with them

I absolutely love the music of Bloodhound Gang, and I think many of their songs capture their whimsical, chaotic, silly energy. Let's go with "A Lap Dance Is So Much Better When The Stripper Is Crying."

Harry

Cavetown dominates my playlists for Harry — top picks being "Meteor Shower," "Lemon Boy," "Advice," "This is Home," and "Sweet Tooth." And most of all, "Talk to Me":

His beautiful hoarse adolescent voice fits perfectly, as well as the understated purity and warmth of his lyrics.

Perhaps I'll hold on to the top song -- as it will surface in the penultimate chapter. :D

I'm also very fond of listening to "Icicles" by The Scary Jokes to get in the LS!Tom mindset. Every lyric fits, particularly:

The tone from light-hearted and self-confident, to freaking out like a teenage girl - it's perfect.

19. Vices/bad habits

Smoking cigarettes, making bombs, dealing drugs. Probably watch a lot of porn (not together; or at least I hope not).

Harry

He is quite saintly. He often distracts himself from his problems by exhausting himself physically, so perhaps that.

The porn is getting a bit out of hand for him too, though.

Tom

He not only hyper-fixates on the person he loves, but also, on the many people he hates. Like, Cedric has clearly been living in his head rent free lol.

24. Most annoying habit

Twins

I can just hear them smacking their food. No manners, these two.

Harry

I think, if you asked his parents or friends, it would be his inexplicable mood swings.

But readers spend a lot of time in his head, so I think it seems a lot more understandable from that angle, lol.

Tom

He requires you to clarify yourself, literally, if he takes issue with anything you've said or otherwise wants you to reconsider.

It's probably not always purposeful; I do think he can struggle with subtext. Sometimes it is purposeful, and he's being difficult on purpose. Perhaps it's a lingering habit from childhood, where he usually could not pick up on subtext at all.

50. A memory they’ve blocked out

Hey, they have no recollection of tying Ron to that lamppost during the winter storm. He probably did that himself, the little squealer.

Harry

He has—with above-average success—ignored many memories relating to his gay attraction LMAO.

When he says (I think in Ch. 4?) that he's quite sure he isn't gay, let me be cleary: he is eyeball deep in denial.

He does know he's gay by that point. He knew it for years. He's just masterful at repressing that little voice inside his head.

Tom

His memory is extremely sharp, '99th percentile' sort of sharp. But I still think he manages to block out quite a bit of ages 10-13 alsjdlfkj 💀

I think he can remember it all if he wants, but he does have some very selective blockers covering up to months of time: portions of his trial, his nan and aunties crying, several of the mandatory therapy sessions he went to, the works.

Most of all, I think he really blocks out any memory of Harry during this time, to the extent he can barely remember him being at the trial at all.

I would argue this is where he varies the most from canon!Voldemort. For me, it's not the limitless twinkiness, nor even the capacity for romantic obsession, that makes LS!Tom fundamentally different from Voldemort. It is his ability to compartmentalize, and move on.

I have noticed a lot of the songs I like have complex music and sounds and stuff, good lyrics dont matter but are nice to have. The range of songs go from really soft and fluffy love songs with lots of acoustics. To really loud songs (rock I think??) That I dont really know what genre they are but they are loud y'know? Some songs have explicit lyrics.

My all time favorite artist at the moment is Ricky Montgomery, I dont like all his songs but I like most overall, some of my favourites are:

Book Review: They Both Die at the End

They Both Die at the End by Adam Silvera Young Adult Fiction/Science-Fiction Page Count: 384 Rating: 5 - They Both Die at the End is simple, but at the same time very poetically written— the plot is outstanding. Reviewer: Rebecca Torres

In the novel They Both Die at the End, we are in a world where people miraculously know they’re the day of their tragic fate. More specifically, Mateo and Rufus,—our main characters— are both called by Death Cast on the same day. Death Cast is the phone line that determines peoples’ death— yet cannot determine how or exactly what time the said person will die. The two meet in such circumstances, as they live their last day. They Both Die at the End, was such a good read! It pulled me out of my reading rut, with its one of a kind plot. It’s an interesting thought to imagine: If we knew when we died. That idea enters my head quite often, especially after reading this book. I love how the book is narrated to still have unanswered questions behind the phenomenon. People in the novel’s world, though they know what day they are going to die, don’t know how or what time it happens. It keeps the story raw; much like our world, we don’t have all the answers or explanations.

The main characters of the story guide us through the individual part of their day, as well as the time they spend together. Adam Silvera paints this picture for us: Rufus is someone who takes too many risks and Mateo takes close to none. Rufus has a rag-tag group of friends, and none of them are afraid of a little tussle. Mateo is the living embodiment of a homebody, never leaving his house or doing anything interesting with his life. Despite this—all of this— they are assigned to die on the same day. In fear of wasting time, the two create their individual accounts on the Last Friend app— an app to meet someone random, who shares your same fate. They come across one another, and spend what feels like a year, all in one day. Both grow from each other as their death awaits them.

This story made me very much value the life I have. I hope to have the experiences they did on this day. They somehow made their last day, probably the best day of either of their lives. The story doesn’t make it all sunshine-and-rainbows, however. Like it should be, it took time for Rufus and Mateo to bond. If I put my shoes in either of their places, I wouldn’t have too much trust either. Putting two very different personalities together, didn’t exactly work at first. But the day put them in situations where they had to be vulnerable, honest, and caring. They open up to each other in such a natural way, that books can’t directly depict. It’s a story of growth and acceptance, that put me through all the emotions. It’s a good read for anyone who loves subtle science-fiction— a normal world setting, with one unusual feature or circumstance.

“American Pie” by Don McLean: This song is a very impactful part(for me) of the book. It’s a song played during a chapter. Due to possible spoilers, I cannot say why, but its lyrics “This’ll be the day that I die,” fit very well with the story’s overall mood. The song also presents happiness in bad happenings. They’re discussing death, yet say it in a way that makes the characters grateful for this last day.

“Piano Man” by Billy Joel: Though a sad song, it depicts the side characters' feelings about dying perfectly. There is also a part in the book where people with fears just let them go for a moment. This song feels like letting go of worries and leaving them behind. Being carefree is the remedy for these people's lying fates.

“Lemon Boy” by Cavetown: Mateo’s and Rufus’ bond is explained perfectly by this. The song talks about all the bad flaws you notice, when first meeting someone. The end of the song discusses getting past that and learning to grow a relationship with them. That is how the two started this journey through their last 24 hours.

Hi! I noticed you threw around the word inspiration when you reblogged my poem (and like stop lying) but that made me wonder:

You are such a prolific and creative artist, where does your inspiration typically come from? Like yes, Breath of the Wild, but what compels you to draw a certain environment or place? You always do it so well that I imagine you just have a magic wand lol 🤩

Mostly music & writing!! I tend to fixate on one song or one lyric at a time which you can really see if you look at the captions of stuff I’ve drawn—for instance, I listened to the journey by Andy Leech a lot while drawing this.

Those landscapes are an exception though because they were actually inspired by kass locations! Since during all of his shrine quest songs theres a portion of the main Botw theme playing in the background I wondered what order all the locations would be in if I patched it all together put them in musical order. Thing is, I got lazy and didn’t want to draw all of them so that’s what we’ve got now lol.

...thats a special case though, most of my ideas are based off of song lyrics that I’ve wildly misinterpreted to fit with my ship. So song recs are greatly appreciated!

Summary’s of some things

Oikawa and u have lived your whole lives living next door to each other, but you had your own friend groups and activities to deal with so you never became friends- only ever really interacting when your moms hung out - which wasn’t very often, and when you happened to leave to house at the same time or get home at the same time and you just say a simple “hi, how was your day? Oh good, mine too, goodnight” just filler conversation that neither of your really cared for

Until the start of high school and oikawa came home crying his first day because he didn’t didn’t do great at the volleyball team try-outs so he’s sure that he’s going to fail, only for his day to get worse and he forgets his keys, but you got home a mere thirty seconds later and let him into your house, fed him and talked with him about it before letting him climb from your room balcony to his so he could get home and rest

And from that day on- anytime Oikawa was absolutely free, he was spending it in your room or backyard, getting to know you and wonder why he hadn’t done this when you moved next to him when you both were five

Very quickly Oikawa begins to fall in love with you, only to hear you crying because of what’s happening at your school, Shiratorizawa

The first day of Shiratorizawa, your best friend barges in your class and immediately asks out who she deemed was the cutest guy there, Wakatoshi Ushijima, who surprisingly accepted, he sits next to you in class because your best friend wants “her two most important people to bond”

But only for you to begin to like him and oikawa finds out

Of course he comforts you- your his friend and your upset, he just wished you liked him instead of his enemy - this only fueled his hatred for the guy

You got over it of course, and you and Ushijima actually became quite great friends - especially when your best friend invited you both to all these hang outs and either bails at the last second or leaves 20 mins in because “her mom”

Your friendship with Oikawa is also blossoming, his crush on you growing tenfolds as you both mature into respected third-years

Only for everything to go to shit because Oikawa decides he’s going to convince you to fall in love with him- just as things are becoming clear with Ushijima

Both boys are made aware of each other at a training camp at Shiratorizawa, that aobajohsai went to when Oikawa asked you to drop off something from his house- which you had been granted a key to just a year after being friends

When you go to give the thing to The gym to find Oikawa and they both come up to you

And war has been declared
