He doesn't talk anymore.
It was a jarring switch, and everyone still isn't used to Steve's persistent silence.
Because before, he was nearly as chatty as Dustin. Always trying to make the kids laugh, yelling at them and calling them shitheads (albeit lovingly).
He doesn't even laugh anymore.
His windpipe had been badly crushed by the demobat's tail wrapped snugly around his neck.
He had needed surgery.
Surgery that had only added to the lacerations and the keloid scars around on his neck.
And really, it's not that he can't talk.
He couldn't for awhile, and it still hurts sometimes.
But he doesn't fucking want to.
He has nothing left to say.
Because he had made peace with death.
Several times, actually. Throwing the burning bottles, being choked in a dried-out lake by a creature straight from his nightmares.
In fact, he had been mostly ready to venture into the sweet beyond since last summer.
His leg shook under the table, and he was staring at the silver ring on his thumb, spinning it around, and around.
He didn't really like when Robin left him alone at their donation table, she was much better at talking to the people that stopped by, bringing more clothes they didn't need, or coming to pick up something to replace what's been lost.
But Robin was doing her best to move on. Chatting up Vickie in some corner, somewhere.
A small cough got Steve's attention.
It was Susan. Hargrove. Mayfield? Did she go back to her previous name after her abusive husband left her with the corpse of his son?
"I found another box. I guess Maxine had been-" her eyes welled up, and Steve's hands stopped spinning the ring around his thumb. "Well, I think she kept some things of his."
Steve's hands shook as he stood up.
He knew Billy and Max had been much closer than they let on.
He knew Max missed Billy more than she could really express.
He opened the box.
Right on top.
It was that fucking jacket.
The brown leather one. The one that was older and softer, more worn than anything else Billy owned.
Because he loved it. Because he took care of it. Because it was his favorite.
And something in Steve broke a little, and he raised the jacket to his face, and he breathed in deeply. He didn't care who saw. He didn't care that Susan's face had gone pale and her tears had started falling for real.
"Oh."
He barely heard her voice over the blood rushing in his ears, the smell and the memories and don't fucking cry, Steven!
Susan closed the box up carefully. Steve finally lowered the jacket.
"I can put this in your car. So you can keep them. You deserve to-" she glanced down at his hands, and the silver ring, tarnished and glinting on his thumb. "keep them."
Steve brought his hand up to his wobbling chin, touching his fingertips gently under his lip, bringing his hand back down, palm up.
Thank you.
He hoped she got it. Understood the way she understood his tears.
She took his hand briefly.
"I wish we had met differently. I wish-well. I'm sure you wish the same thing."
Steve nodded. His leg had started shaking again, making his whole body tremble. He felt unsteady on his feet.
He fished his keys out of his pocket, handing them to Susan so she could take the box and tuck it in his trunk.
"You take care, then. You, you remember him well."
Steve nodded again, hot tears dripping off his chin.
Yes, ma'am. He wanted to say. I'll never forget him.
But,
he doesn't talk anymore.

"You know, it's a crazy idea, but have you considered... telling the truth?" "Oh, you mean, that I couldn't even get into Tech and my douchebag dad's trying to teach me a lesson, I make three bucks an hour, and I have no future? That truth?"

I want a fic where Robin is adopted.
The only parents she has ever known are her own and the only time being adopted has ever bothered her was when Amanda St. James made fun of her for it in the third grade. But Robin told her that at least her parents wanted her and were not just stuck with her like Amanda’s parents, “And maybe that’s why your Mom and Dad are so unhappy all the time.”
She got in trouble for making Amanda cry and went back to never thinking about her birthparents. She had no interest in knowing anything about them and it stayed like that until she turned sixteen.
On her sixteenth birthday, her mom gave her a letter written to her by her birthmother. Robin doesn’t read it immediately, but eventually gives in to her own curiosity. She reads it over twice before her mind snags on a sentence, ‘I wanted to give you and your brother a better life…’ … you and your brother…. You and your brother…. You and-
“I have a brother.”
This eats at Robin, especially after her dad’s call to the adoption agency goes nowhere. It eats at her so much that she finally gives in – Fred Benson swears up and down that Nancy Wheeler is the best investigator on the school paper – and asks for help.
Nancy says yes and is maybe a little too invested in finding the truth, but honestly, Robin is having fun and she wants to find her apparent twin. She wants to know about his life. Settle the whole nurture over nature thing.
They hit a lot of walls, a lot of dead ends. They break a few rules and maybe commit a felony. They enlist Jonathan Byers to help and even Eddie Munson at one point because he knows how to pick locks, and it’s all for nothing.
One day when they have everything they’ve found spread out across the Wheeler’s dining room table, Steve comes over to pick up Dustin. He looks down at the whole mess and points at her birth certificate like, “Hey, we were born on the same day.”

@thediktatortot sent me some song recommendations with specific harringrove-coded lyrics and I decided I wanted to write something for as many different ones as I have the juice, because I was genuinely inspired and thank you thank you friend for the recommends!

First Song: Lemon Boy by Cavetown
“It’s actually pretty easy being nice to a bitter boy like him, so I got myself a citrus friend.”

Here’s the thing about Billy Hargrove:
He’s simple.
Everyone (all the girls) think he’s this complicated thing. This person with a million different layers and a million different faces. And, Steve guesses, that’s sorta true.
But really, he’s kinda easy to understand.
He needs kindness.
There’s not much more to it than that.
And sure, maybe the why is where the layers come in. He needs kindness because he never gets any blah, blah, blah.
But at the end of the day, a few nice things, and he’s loyal forever.
Steve figured it out kind of accidentally.
Because Billy forgot his textbook in American History, and they sit alphabetically by last name in that class, and so, Steve kinda nudged his book over so that Billy could look on and wouldn’t lose any participation points that day for not being able to answer questions and read when the teacher asked, and so, it was one tiny nice thing.
Okay, maybe it was more than one tiny nice thing.
Because it was a chain of tiny nice things.
Starting with the textbook, and finishing with Steve sucking Billy off in the backseat of the Camaro to “blow off some steam”.
After the textbook, came the apology.
Half-assed, for sure, and written in scribbly, smudgy handwriting. Not signed, but clear who it’s from.
Sorry for messing you up like that.
Steve returned it with his own note, dropped pointedly on Billy’s desk in class.
Sorry for being weird. I promise nothing shady was going on with your sister. I get it though. No hard feelings.
Billy glanced at Steve through his lashes, and Steve was a little disappointed that Billy hadn’t forgotten his history textbook.
The next nice thing was a coffee.
Because Steve made himself coffee and a breakfast sandwich on the mornings he decided he didn’t care if he was late to school.
He was driving to school, listening to an old mixtape he found at the bottom of his glovebox, and he saw Billy. Head bent low, walking along the side of the road.
HIs hands were in his pockets, and the line of his shoulders was tense. He was all but stomping, and the clear aura of pissed off somehow didn’t deter Steve from pulling along next to him, reaching over to roll down the passenger side window.
“Hargrove! You want a ride.”
The stomping stopped, but Billy gave no other indication that he had heard Steve.
The BMW’s engine idled.
“C’mon, man. It’s like three more miles to school. Lemme drive you.”
When Billy turned to get into the car, Steve was why he was keeping his head down and his shoulders around his ears.
He had a big black shiner, a bruise covering his whole left eye.
He sat low in the passenger seat, cranking the window back up.
“Looks nasty.”
Billy only grunted in response.
“Car in the shop?”
Billy snorted.
“My dad took my keys.”
Ah.
Probably clocked him in the face, too.
Steve’s no stranger to it, even if his dad’s more of a smacker than a puncher. He also had a weird realization that Billy’s dad must be left-handed, like Billy himself.
Steve took his coffee out of the cup holder, passing it to Billy.
“You look like you need this more than I do.”
The next nice thing was kinda the one that pushed them over the line.
Over the line from acquaintances that once beat each other up to actual sort of friends.
It was also not a nice thing Steve did.
It was one Billy did.
And Steve wasn't even there to witness it.
All he saw was the blue green bruising on Tommy H.'s jaw.
"When are you gonna learn, Tommy. Don't pick fights you can't win."
Tommy nearly snarled at Steve from the bleachers, catching himself last minute before he made a seen in front of the entire P.E. class.
Steve only smirked, and took his seat in front of Tommy.
The coach stood in front of the bored class, explaining that they'd be running laps today.
It's what they did whenever he was too hungover to actually make them so anything.
But it's fine. Steve's always been a good runner, and it means he doesn't have to think about anything or talk to anyone while he went.
He tensed when he felt Tommy lean forward behind him, getting in close to murmur in Steve's ear.
"Found yourself a new attack dog, huh, Stevie? Hargrove nearly knocked my teeth out when I called you a pussy. You givin' it up for him, too?"
"Careful, Buddy. You sound jealous."
Tommy snorted and leaned back, but Steve's gut was rolling.
Billy had taken down Tommy for saying something shitty behind Steve's back.
It made Steve's face hot.
Billy showed up twenty minutes late to P.E. He gave Coach a note, and started his laps with the rest of the class.
Steve slowed his pace to get next to him.
Billy's knuckled were a little bruised, and he had a scratch mark on his neck.
Tommy did always fight dirty.
"Heard you gave it to Tommy."
"He deserved it." Billy kept his eyes forward, his pace steady.
"Yeah. He's a toolbag."
They jogged in silence.
Steve opened his mouth to ask something, when Billy piped up.
"Are we, like, friends?"
"I think so. Unless you make a habit of beating the shit out of people for calling your non-friends pussies."
Steve caught Billy's eye and grinned. Billy's smile was reluctant and small, but Steve liked it.
"Last to finish ten laps owes the winner a milkshake." Steve clapped Billy on the back, and took off, easily weaving through the gaggle of junior girls walking in front of them.
"Harrington, you bastard!"

hi i've missed you!
can we do something soft and just cute like going for drives and getting fast food and just talking?
“I’m picking you up,” came the crackling voice from the walkie talkie on the nightstand. “Meet me at the spot in ten. Over.”
“No, you freakazoid,” Steve barely moved from his blanket cocoon, only reaching one arm out to press the button on the side. “I’m asleep.”
“Clearly not. I’m on my way, Shithead. Over and out.”
Steve rolled his eyes, and contemplated going back to sleep for all of five seconds before he sighed, and heaved himself to standing.
Curse Billy for stealing that walkie from Max, for suggesting they stay on their own channel, different than the ones the kids use. Curse Billy for his insomnia and his late night drives. Curse Billy for the way he keeps on hand on Steve’s thigh while they go and always stops at the nearest drive-thru to get Steve a milkshake and wolf down a double cheeseburger (because his dad slapped him and sent him to his room without dinner. Again.)
Steve trudged around the side of his house, crashing through the well-worn path through the sparse trees to the road on the other side.
They both agreed that Billy’s car shouldn’t be spotted outside of Steve’s house, even if they were publicly friends now.
The Camaro was rumbling up the street, and Steve could practically feel the road of the engine shake in his chest before he could even spot the headlights.
Doesn’t matter how many speeding tickets Officer Callahan gives him, Billy’s never gonna be a sensible driver.
He stops in front of Steve, and he grins as Steve joins him in the car, leaning over the center console and burying his left hand in thick, dark brown hair to kiss Steve in a way that steals the breath from his lungs.
“You owe me.”
“Yeah, yeah, Princess. I’ll get you a damn milkshake.”
The car lurched forward, and they flew down the service roads, flipping off the Leaving Hawkins sign as they went past, on their way to a different little town.
A different little slice of life.

Really just wanted to draw a Camp Counsellor, Steddie. But being a bit of a horror fan I turned toward the awesome 80s videos of the day for inspiration. Where both of them think a warm summer and babysitting kids is going to be a breeze. Little do they know that they become the Final boys as something stalks the camp 😢 Is it really killing the kids? Or are the boys just stuck in their own nightmare the Camp created for them? DunDunDun!!!! 😨😈
