I feel like the true cruelty of the lan sect is a really overlooked topic in the mdzs fandom, because when you think about it...

they practically forced madam lan into marriage so she wouldn't be executed because she killed one of her teachers, but gave her no trial or chance to explain why, and once she was married they simply locked her away and that was that. qingheng-jun then locked himself into seclusion once he had a kid and that was that, had no business with the rest of the sect and left xichen and wangji to grow up alone.

not to mention the fact that wangji even being born is suspicious... xichens conception makes sense, as they would've needed a sect heir, but wangji? how would he have been concieved, if madame lan was trapped away and qingheng-jun was in seclusion. either this is a plot hole im looking way too deep into or theres something darker happening there

in any case, the twin jades most likely did not have a good childhood. like at all. their father was completely absent, and once their mother died they were practically parentless. sure lan qiren raised them, but he was also acting as the lan sect leader whilst qingheng-jun was away, so i doubt he held much involvement in their raising other than making sure they stuck to the rules and were fed etc

SPEAKING OF THE RULES. the punishments the kids in the lan sect had to deal with?????? the fact that nhs, wwx and jc were beaten for rule breaking whilst they were staying at the lan sect as pupils just makes me wonder how badly they treat their own lan disciples if thats how they treat special guests from other clans. they were fifteen when that happened, FIFTEEN, so clearly the lan sect has no problem with LITERALLY BEATING children to teach a lesson.

its basically just abuse to keep a system in place, and it makes me wonder just how many times the twin jades suffered like that as kids to be as 'perfect' as they are as adults

the lan are so corrupt in their ways and i hate how we dont fully see that in the story until wangji is whipped for protecting wei ying. the whole situation is so fucking cruel and unnecessary it makes my blood boil whenever i reread/rewatch that part, because yes wangji did wrong by injuring the elders but the only reason he did so was because they were refusing to listen to him and quite literally trying to murder his lover.

i get he committed treason or whatever by fighting the elders but 33 whip lashes all in one go with NO breaks or healing time?? with a magical cultivated punishment whip as well, its genuinely like they were trying to kill him. even if he didnt die from the lashings themselves he could've gotten an infection, or had severe blood loss, or hell they coulve broken his spine with the force of it. it took so long for him to heal from that, and it left him with so many scars both physical and mental. that level of injury would've likely left him with some form of chronic pain or illness as well, and it was just so cruel for a situation that didn't ever need to come to this.

they forced him into seclusion, just like his father, and punished him for defending himself, just like they did his mother. xichen ended up similarly as well, with his seclusion after the events with jgy. the lan elders had seen the horrific end qingheng-jun and madame lan had, and yet did nothing to stop their children from facing the same trauma, even making theirs worse.

the lans praise themselves as a sect that sticks to righteousness and principles, when realistically its just full of hypocrites holding onto power by means of fear and punishment. they say that lwj broke the rules by fighting to save wwx, and yet somehow torturing him was completely within the rules of the clan.

their rules and image are merely a cover up for the downright abuse and silencing of their disciples, and its just so fucked up. i could rant about this for so much longer, but also wanna see what other people think before i delve into some of the other topics i have in mind that relate

I can see shipping 3zun as a temporary thing where LXC mediates the sexual tension between nieyao, but their relationships with him were never built to last forever, and there’s a reason nieyao end up in the coffin together while LXC remains in the living world.

I can see him being the oblivious third wheel next to Wen Ning's knowledge of Wangxian. I honestly can't even see any real sexual tension on Lan Xichen's part for either one of these two, given I just do not see him romantically or physically attracted to either one of them. He very easily was content with JGY marrying a woman, Qin Su and happily lived his own single life with no need of a marriage or sexually romantic life. He was more horrified on her behalf for the lengths JGY had gone to to cover everything up than any sort of sorrow losing any sort of romance once he found out. If he had some sort of unspoken sorrow about any of their lack of being able to have a romance or hide it, it would have been given actual precedence in story to be a what if, as with Yue Qingyuan's persistence when it had come to Shen Jiu.

My issue is as always with 3zun as a romance and Xiyao, is that it relies on something that is not there for Lan Xichen's part. He is just a guy with friendships that are not as deep as many thought it was, and his shakiness at the end of the plot is his own disappointment with his own judgement that turned out to be so very wrong in people.

Lan Xichen arrives to his brother and Xuanyu in the middle of an argument.

They’re surrounded by corpses, Xue Yang inexplicably among them, and the missing Xiao Xingchen is standing there huddled against Song Lan’s side, looking strangely small, while a blind girl stands on his other side.

Sizhui and Jingyi are staying several steps back in an attempt not to get caught in the couple’s argument.

He almost regrets leaving A-Yao behind with the rest of the disciples. It had made sense at the time, with the low but present chance that they’d run into trouble, but now he wishes he could be the one dealing with their siblings instead of him.

“-not just going to – XICHEN-GE! GET DOWN HERE!”

The disciples, who’d demanded to come along, cringe away and even send him sympathetic looks.

She only calls him Xichen-ge when she wants something. He’s pretty sure A-Yao taught her that.

He descends, jumping off his sword, and frowning when he gets a closer look at her. She has wounds around her waist and shoulder even though they seemed to have stopped bleeding and there’s a variety of colorful bruises on the bits of skin he can see on her, which means there’s even more hiding beneath her robes. “You’re injured.”

“It’s nothing,” she says dismissively. Wangji’s eyebrow twitches. “I want Song Lan, Xiao Xingchen, and A-Qing to accompany us to Koi Tower.”

He assumes A-Qing is the blind girl. “Ah.”

“It’s not proper,” Wangji says, enough irritation bleeding though that this is clearly not the first time he’s said that.

She sends him a scathing look. “We can’t send them back to Cloud Recesses, Lan Qiren will eat them alive, and we can’t leave them alone. Look at them! Look around! They need help.”

“Ah, Madame Lan,” Song Lan says tentatively, “you’ve already done-”

“Shut up,” she says and his mouth snaps shut. Lan Xichen stares. He’s encountered Song Lan many times and has never seen him act like this. “Where are you going to go? What are you going to do? You deserve rest, all three of you, and while I would hardly call the Jin restful, it’s at least better than having to watch you back on the road.” She frowns. “Also, what’s with Madame Lan? I told you to call me Xuanyu. If you fight an army of the undead together, you don’t have to use titles. It’s a rule, or something.”

Wangji’s eyes narrow and Song Lan smiles at Xuanyu before he catches sight of Wangji’s expression and then his lips thin out into a straight line.

Lan Xichen can already feel a headache building.

She’s only been missing for a few hours. How did any of this even happen?

If he wants to find out, then he’s going to have to give in to her. She won’t tell him anything otherwise, he assumes, because A-Yao definitely wouldn’t. Besides, he has no reason to deny her. She is Madame Lan and Lady Jin and she’s more than entitled to add people to their traveling party and to invite wandering cultivators to Koi Tower.

“The rest of our party is nearby,” he says finally. “We’re happy for you to join us.”

His brother glares at him, but what does he expect him to do? She’s Wangji's wife.

Why do people like LXC? What’s the most interesting thing about him?

So this was asked in a way that makes me think that you're looking for confrontation, which very much puzzles me? And if that wasn't your intention, feel free to correct me and I can tell you what gave me that impression in your wording!

But! I also like having opinions and love talking about Lan Xichen, and so I will tell you what I find most interesting about him!

He is a young man of incredible power, both political and cultivation-wise, who chooses to be kind when he thinks that he can, and who has an enormous impact on the story. Sometimes it doesn't feel like it, because he is generally even keeled, polite, and even when he GETS screentime (which isn't all that much), he typically isn't The Singular Point of the scene the way that Wangxian or The Plot might be.

I personally find him to be a complex, kind, lonely man who had to grow up far too fast with far too many responsibilities, who tries to do what is good and kind and sometimes fails horribly. He is polite but mischievous, burdened but almost always smiling, more emotive than his brother but at times far more restrained.

He helps facilitate several horrific tragedies in the course of the story. He has big Eldest Daughter™️ energy. He says there is no black and white to morality when he is the literal head of the strictest, most straight laced clan. He helped raise Wangji and worries about him making friends. He thinks WWX drinking on Cloud Recess premises is funny. He purposefully fulfills LWJ's wants when Wangji himself Does Not See Them. He shelters the FBI's most wanted after he humiliated Xichen in front of the whole cultivation world. He has the patience of a saint, the cheekbones of a god, and the worst relationship luck I've ever seen. His mom is a murderer. His guan looks like a dragon. He can smile with his eyes better than anyone I've ever seen. He deserved to have an ending that the story cared about. His tits are magnificent.

Ooooh oooh ooooh! What’s your opinion on 3zun?

Short answer: "I love them! You can fit so much angst and trauma into this baby! *chef's kiss*"

Long answer:

You have three men with some similarities between them, but some differences that hugely affect their views of the world and themselves. Sometimes these differences enrich their relationship to one another, other times they divide them more than anything else.

JGY, for example, has one huge difference from the other two, other than the obvious, that informs a lot of his character. Unlike LXC & NMJ, he doesn't have people who depend on him for care and protection from the time he's young. Both NMJ & LXC have little brothers, and both have sects that they know will be theirs to watch over one day - to a certain degree, selflessness and duty to something bigger than them is ingrained into them from the time they're babies. JGY, however, only has his mother, so his decisions are based on what's best for him and her, his main duty is to himself and his mother. Neither is right or wrong, but it definitely informs how they address problems and their own ambitions/desires.

And then you have NMJ who has been 'preparing' for an early death his entire life. Some people have written on this better than I could, how he lives with one foot in the grave and how this influences his view on the world, on duty, on being willing to die for your sect and your ideals. And you have LXC who could probably cultivate to immortality, and JGY who is determined to survive at all costs. Completely different views of themselves.

Another thing I recently thought of is how each would view authority and the safety within. NMJ knows there is no safety in being a sect leader, that his job is to make it safe for others. LXC, however, would definitely see it as a safe place, particularly as he has his uncle's support and backing. JGY knows there is no safety in authority, and in a way I think he balks at it a bit. People in positions of authority put his mother in the situation she was, threw him down the stairs, etc - he knows that just because someone is in an authoritative position, it doesn't mean they're worthy of or deserving of respect. And by the time JGY becomes sect leader, he's killed 3 other sect leaders - nobody knows how precarious his position is better than him. The fact that NHS slides under his nose as he does is quite amazing in fact!

So yeah, they're all very different and unique. they could be so amazing together if they were all on the same page, but when they're not, they're a disaster.

But one thing is more important to anything else, imho - that they love each other. Whether you enjoy a platonic or romantic 3zun, they all do love each other so very, very much. That's why things go wrong so spectacularly - betrayal etc would not hurt so much if the love wasn't there to begin with.

(I got a very interesting ask on CC and I want to elaborate more because I answered it very briefly at the time)

First of all, I don’t think the coffin ending is just or deserved for either nmj or jgy - and I don’t think shoving lxc into it makes it any better, or gives any sort of closure. I do think that in some moments of despair Lan Xichen may have wished to be dead as well, but that has nothing to do with a desire to “be with them” (being buried with two non-sentient corpses who are fighting in a horrifying way for a century is not really ideal) and more with a desire to escape his guilt about stabbing JGY. [as an aside I also think the coffin is very much a convenient plot device to tie up all loose ends neatly so wangxian need not to worry about it in the happy ending, and people give it sometimes more significance than intended, but that’s just my personal interpretation!]

Anyway! Grief is irrational, of course, so Lan Xichen may think he wants to die and be torn apart by corpse monsters for a minute there, but he will never do it, and you know why? Because A-Yao saved his life. It is narratively understandable that Lan Xichen, a symbol of hope throughout the story, has his Hope snuffed out at the end and we are left unsure whether he will ever be able to recover. But he simply can’t die, because A-Yao pushed him away to let him live!

So that leaves option B - live on with guilt and regrets and, ideally, do something about it. Where you take this is up to you (Protect the watchtowers? Just try to do good by orphans and commoners? Become immortal to wait for that century to pass?) but I just want to append a note that I don’t think resurrecting JGY necessarily means going to the dark side! Save for, well, in the literal sense i.e. demonic cultivation. ;)

also damn, WWX is right there. Maybe in 10-20 years he’ll get bored enough to decide to do a good deed for Lan Xichen’s 50th birthday or something. God knows he deserves it.

I had ton of fun with this week illustration. It turned out better than i expected. Even though i re-started the whole thing from scratch last minute xD

I added ton of symbolism in there, with A-Yao bathing in LXC's moonlight and the contrast with the color making a sun/moon reference.

Also for once i feel like this LXC in my art deserves to be called number 1 gentleman in the cultivation world UvU He's pretty. (At least i find him pretty é3è)

Anyways i hope you'll like this chapter. We are tackling the Sunshot war and so the angst is starting a bit U-U° Now you'll soon know why in the present LXC is not happily married to A-Yao and father of 8 kids, as a reader put it in a comment xD (But they'll get there!...Maybe not 8 kids, tho, i know they hum embrace each other a lot (to LWJ's dismay) but they are not yet conveiving any baby (to LWJ's dismay again. I just read a modern AU fic labelled as wangxian and xiyao, except in the last quarter you get surprise murderer Meng Yao! It was not a good surprise.

I simply dont believe JGY would kill NMJ without his father's pressure and without feeling very personally threatened by NMJ.

It was one of those stories where the wangxian was so good but the take on JGY just leaves me wanting to remix it.

I can absolutely believe that JGY would fall for Xichen at first sight, even if Xichen was in a committed relationship. I can absolutely love the idea of JGY as a psychiatrist, someone clever and controlled and well-trained but also someone who is a little distrusted in social circles. I love the idea of NMJ haunting LXC, growing angrier and angrier at LXC cosying up to the man he blames for his death.

But personally I would have gone with JGY feeling morally responsible but not technically having killed him. Picture it -- JGY meeting LXC and falling hard, despite knowing he's involved with JGYs patient. JGY mentioning painkillers as a way to manage pain or listening to NMJ vent about his GP not listening to his pain needs and recommending MXY as a second opinion. JGY noticing signs of addiction and letting it slide -- JGY doubting his own instincts, wondering if his personal jealousy over LXC is colouring his view, convincing himself he should be impartial, he should believe NMJ when he says a bottle of pills were lost, when he claims a prescription was left behind when he went camping.

(JGY starting to deeply dislike NMJ, and not knowing how much of that is deserved and how much is because LXC could do so much better. JGY suspecting addiction and also trapped by patient confidentiality- he can't tell anyone without losing his license, and it's only getting worse.)

But there's a grain of truth to NMJ saying JGY told him how to find street drugs. JGY said it as an example of addiction, as a scare tactic of how NMJ will end up -- one of those junkies standing on Reynolds Rd, passed out under the bridge. It wasn't meant as an instruction.

And if I was rewriting it, I'd probably also have JGY as an untrained medium -- not naturally powerful, but strong enough that he can see NMJ. He can't hear him, but he can see NMJ yelling and screaming at him, he knows NMJ is furious at him. He knows the smart move is to leave LXC alone but instead he pastes on a smile and forces himself to ignore the ghost in the room. It's just a ghost. Ghosts fade away eventually.

He lies to LXC about it. Doesn't want to hurt him with the idea of his ex boyfriend angrily haunting him. Doesn't want LXC to ever think he has to choose between JGY and NMJ. (JGY would never ask LXC to choose between him and the love of his life; JGY knows he'd lose.) Deep down, JGY thinks he might deserve NMJs anger - he knows how unprofessional it was to reach out to a client's boyfriend. He pushed his way into LXCs life as a friend, as a source of support. He made himself useful and made sure he was always there, made sure no one else could take advantage of LXCs grief, could get their hooks into him while he was vulnerable. He made himself quietly indispensable, allowed LXC to rely on him instead of family support.

JGY knows a good person wouldn't have done that but he wanted LXC so badly. And he justifies it to himself that he would never hurt LXC and he isn't doing LXC any harm. He doesn't push for romance, he isn't demanding, and it's six months before LXC reaches for his hand during a sad moment in a movie. It's weeks after that when LXC kisses him, tender and uncertain. They take it slow and JGY never rushes LXC.

JGY cant hear NMJ so he thinks thats what NMJ is yelling about -- and he can't tell LXC without hurting him. He can't even suggest moving somewhere else because what if NMJ is haunting LXC, not the apartment? I'm sure JGY ends up doing some secretive googling or maybe getting help from an unreliable medium like Xue Yang, being told the best way to banish spectre from a house is blood magic. But he can't do that to LXCs home -- he knows how the Lans feel about blood magic, he knows LXC wouldn't want that, wouldn't forgive him if he tried it.

So when LWJ and WWX come sniffing around, when WWX can't help watching NMJs dramatics as they eat dinner, JGY panics. He tries to discredit WWX before he tells LXC, he skirts the line of violating professional ethics to relay the worst rumours he's heard about WWX. He tries to protect himself from being found out and in the process, hurts LXCs relationship with his beloved brother -- and proves to himself that he doesn't protect LXC, that he's clinging to someone he doesn't deserve.

And of course it would end with a confrontation. With LWJ and WWX telling the truth, with LXC feeling guilty that NMJ is suffering and betrayed that JGY lied to him. With JGY trying to justify himself, that he acted badly but he's been a good boyfriend to LXC, and WWX being all "Nice motive but still murder" and JGY being stunned by the accusation. Arguning that he didn't kill NMJ, he fell for his boyfriend and pursued him as soon as NMJ was dead. Why would JGY kill him when he kept refusing help for an addiction that would eventually kill him anyway?

Then I think there would be an attack from NMJ and LWJ would still probably offer himself to buy time for WWX but I think JGY would do something foolishly brave to protect LXC and WWX would save the day before anyone died.

And I think LXC would need some time alone to think things through, to come to terms with the idea of NMJ so twisted by anger, with the trauma of seeing someone he loves attack him (and hurt another person he loves), with the idea of a boyfriend who lied to him for a year but still risked his life to save LXC. I think he would be hurt and confused, but eventually he'd give JGY another chance. On the condition that JGY is honest from now on. No more lies, and in return, LXC will try to show JGY that he's not a consolation prize. LXC isn't with him because he was there, because he was convenient and had proved himself useful; that he loves JGY for his kindness and his consideration, for his patience and support, but what he needs now is JGYs trust. (And it would be uncomfortable but JGY would jump at the chance. Eventually, they'd move somewhere new and it would be happy endings all around.)

And the fact that I have definite opinions about how I would have written it shows that it was really well written in the first place. It just missed my preferred characterisation of my little meow meow.
