one of if not my favorite little loops of meaning that i love about the lyrics of dress might be the idea that the “indentation in the shape of you” and “mark on me golden tattoo” can be effortlessly connected through a single symbol: angel wings.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the golden angel wings tattoo taylor wore to drake’s party on october 23rd 2016, captured in the visible polaroid of her and karlie, mirrors the vsfs angel wing ring leaving a little winged indentation on her finger
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the first time she was seen wearing the ring publicly was to the birthday party that she threw for lorde on november 7th 2016, the ring itself is just behind the drink lorde is holding, in the iconic picture of taylor and karlie both kissing lorde on the cheek.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
so just the closeness in timing of these events, the iconography of karlie being an Angel, the face of the angel wing adorned vs perfume, etc etc
i just think about it from time to time

Name: Now or Never!
Game: Splatoon Series et al
Hi :3 Mod Cat Flopter here. I was too busy sleeping in a sunbeam to post until now, but I’m here with an oddball.
Now or Never! is an iconic song by the band Squid Squad, one of the first popular rock bands in the Splatoon world! Now or Never plays in the last minute of a Turf War in all three Splatoon games, as well as at other times in other forms.
The first hint of Now or Never! that world saw was at E3 2014, a weird boogie that helped show off Splatoon (for the Wii U console!!)
The Beta version of Now or Never! is unavailable in a clean quality. Most of the footage has ink flying everywhere! However, one intrepid fan recreated the sound on youtube :3
Tumblr media
The original track goes for even more of a hard rock sound than the final Now or Never! This song REALLY tells you to Ink or Sink down the rankings, and Splattack the enemy to win! However, it doesn't quite sound like a Squid Squad song to me, with a lack of their trademark vocalist and the synthesizers Splatoon is known for. Overall, I like the finished Now or Never! betta, but the changes have me Kracken Up!
Tumblr media
The finished Now or Never! by Squid Squad, which debuted in Splatoon 1, is such an iconic piece of Splatoon that it's hard to imagine the game without it.
The track is high energy and establishes lots and lots and lots of Splatoon's sound, from the rock influences, to the synths, to the inklish vocals and the energy! To quote a cool video, it's loud, bold, and Booyah! (please imagine a guitar riff!) I'm just a little guy and I don't know music theory so please watch this video instead https://youtu.be/38h8eudzy7k
it's only 11 Now or Never!s long, it's a good use of your time.
Squid Squad is soooo creative for soming up with this song all on their own :3
Tumblr media
Next is the Squid Sisters’ splatfest cover of Now or Never!
With more of a Jpop feel, the Squid Sisters change up the sound immensely, going for MORE synths and a BUBBLEGUM feel! It’s so cool. I bet the original creators of Now or Never! Were so happy when they heard this cover by a famous band!!
The next iteration is a slightly altered live performance by the Squid SIsters from 2016!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wxkKUbNnXKE&t=326s
The song is modified to be extended in this version, although i have to say- too much of a good thing :c. The new sections that aren’t just a loop of the original song are interesting evolutions, but they’re sadly a small part of the performance.
Next up is an era shift! The Splatoon 2 Global Testfire (2017) had its own version of Now or Never! This came with a shift in bands and an overall higher push for Splatoon marketing within other Nintendo games, such as Super Smash Brothers Ultimate and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe! Its so cool that Squid Squad let Wet Floor cover their original song, and I'm excited to tell you about it!
Tumblr media
With an obvious and notable shift in vocals, the Splatoon 2 Global Testfire Now or Never! also brings a shift in energy from the Squid Squad version, slowing the song down and bridging the gap between the Squid Squad and Wet Floor versions of the song. It adds even more synths to the composition, pushing it towards a western poppy feel over the rock and jpop versions of Splatoon 1.
And here’s the finished version!
Tumblr media
It pulls back on the synths to pre-splatoon 1 levels and boosts the crowd section, adding in a ska feel. The classic guitar and drum kit are even more prominent here than in the Squid Squad version, which has both benefits and drawbacks. For one, the Splatoon sound is a fusion of both rock and synths, so scaling it back to more conventional instruments for the genre it’s aiming for is to the game’s detriment. On the other, my cat flopther (father cat flopter) has made me a big fan of classic rock all my life, so I can’t be too mad at moving Now or Never! In that direction.
On the other hand, Off the Hook’s version of Now or Never is…
Tumblr media
Oh. Oh no.
:c
It’s the same issue I have with the other version of Now or Never! In Splatoon 2, but it’s also I think a bad song for Off the Hook. Sorry to fans of lesbianism everywhere, but this just doesn’t sound like an Off the Hook song to me, and although the bubblegummy synth composition works for a Japanese pop band like the Squid SIsters, it doesn’t quite vibe for an American hip-hop, as well as pulling back on Splatoon’s unique sound. The brassy sound at the very beginning is cool, though, and the homage to Marina's inspriation is nice!
Although I’ve been speaking in timeline order up to now, I have to admit something.
I skipped two (2!) Now or Never!s. Actually, I skipped one Bouyant Bougie and I’m going to talk about Ebb and Flow as well in this section.
Being a story mode song, Buoyant Boogie appeared before the Splatfest exclusive Off the Hook Now or Never! on day 1.
Tumblr media
Buoyant Boogie is a Now or Never!; it samples the Squid Sisters’ Now or Never! and even includes backwards vocals from Callie, hinting at her story mode fate, which is cool. :3 The song additionally only lasts one minute before looping. Also, Turquoise October ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!
In Octo Expansion, the final battle is a Turf War on the NILS statue. For two minutes, Fly Octo Fly plays, then at one minute remaining, it transitions into Ebb and Flow. At the time, many people called this a Now or Never!
However, Ebb and Flow is NOT a Now or Never!. It’s an Ebb and Flow. Although it’s cool symbolically, it’s its own song and Off the Hook doesn’t need to be bound by tradition!! THEY GET TO MAKE THEIR OWN COOL MUSIC OK!!
sorry none of these videos are available btw
Okay so next is the first not a Splatoon game Now or Never!, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (2017)’s Now or Never!
Tumblr media
This song plays on the Urchin Underpass battle stage when one minute is left in the match. Interestingly, this is the only Now or Never that is shorter than a minute- The Final Lap jingle takes up four seconds, so the song itself is sped up to accommodate. It’s modeled after Squid Squad’s Now or Never, which is fitting for a Splatoon 1 exclusive stage!
In fact, it feels like a lot of appearances of Now or Never! are almost identical to Squid Squad’s Now or Never!. Here are the rest of them:
Tetris 99 (2019)’s Splatoon Theme’s “10 players left” music
Wait, that’s it?
Yeah! Surprisingly, Now or Never! Is usually remixed. Even though Squid Squad’s iconic and original cover of the song is the most popular, most appearances pay tribute to them instead of keeping their sound 100% the same. Take Super Smash Brothers Ultimate’s Now or Never for example. It’s worse than the original! I’m not even going to pretend to link to it! It’s bad!
The Splattack cover, though, is fresh and new! A jazzy, big band vibe that samples Now or Never! in the same jazzy style. Although it’s far from my favorite Now or Never! it’s something new, something that I’d be excited to see in a Splatoon game. Perhaps an Ink Theory cover? Regardless, it’s an interesting evolution of this Strange Splatoon Entity.
Meanwhile, the The Super Smash Brothers Ultimate remix of Now or Never! itself is……….
….
bad.
it’s so bad
Sorry, Spikey, do I have to talk about this?
Tumblr media
“Yes, Sorry Mod Cat Flopter! You said you wanted to talk about all versions of Now or Never!”
Ok, fine :(
I will continue not even pretending to link this. It’s so bad. zero tension. only nominally a Now or Never!. An infinite Now or Never! would be a good thing, you would think.
Next is the Taiko no Tatsujin Switch Splatoon 2 Medley. A compilation of two original Wet Floor songs (Rip Entry and Turf Master) and their Now or Never! cover. It starts about a minute into the song, not a minute from the end, strangely enough! It’s the middle song of the three!
Off the Hook Live! at Polymanga 2018 This is one of the BEST versions of this song. Take a listen for yourself: https://youtu.be/-i9GTp3Mp30
With the Squid Sisters and live band members here, they use ACTUAL INSTRUMENTS along with the synths, the Splatoon style that I love so much. With a fresh new intro to the song and lots of extensions that continue to ramp up tension, this version of the Squid Sisters’ classic is the height of this song in my opinion!! it’s sooooooo gooooood!! The record scratches in the beginning to lead into the song itself, the electric guitar, the DRUMS!! that kick in at around thirty seconds in. Pearl dabs. THIS is how you extend Now or Never! to four minutes.
Okay, now the SPLATOON 2 FINAL FEST CHAOS VS ORDER NOW OR NEVER!
A second collaboration between Off the Hook and the Squid Sisters, this Now or Never! takes after the Off the Hook cover of the Squid Sisters’ cover of the Squid Squad cover, with both bands providing vocals. With the Squid Sisters here, this version of Off the Hook’s cover is… less bad. Not as good as the other way around, but still better than before. I like it when squids sing :)
Fast-forward three years to Splatoon 3! The third game in the series had, fittingly, three versions of Now or Never! At launch.
First of all, the Deep Cut cover. This chaotic cultural fusion combines the Brazilian, Middle-Eastern, Indian, and classic Japanese influences of the three members of Deep Cut! I’m only one of those things, so I will not comment on how well they pulled this off! All I know is that I really like this song, and that Shiver and Frye are lesbians as fuck. The same guy from before has a video on this one too! I’ll link that instead of posting a not available image. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ebqBmL53UQ
Now! Wham!
Flashback to when I posted about the Infinite Now Or Never in Smash Ultimate!
This one IS an infinite Now or Never! The Tableturf 3 turns remaining theme is a modified infinite Now or Never! In the Tableturf sound style, with Onward! cutting in multiple times through the song. If Now or Never! represents the Turf Warring denizens of the Surface, and Onward! represents the octarian army, this tune is perfect for the Splatlands, where both live in Harmony (tee hee! Get it? :3) and have for generations. Pretty cool if you ask me!
Last but certainly not least, but certainly not last-
C-Side’s Now or Never!
While writing this post (this has taken a long time!) New information came to light! Beika, the lead of C-Side, has claimed to be the first creator of Now or Never! THIS CHANGES EVERYTHING!!!! And it makes perfect sense! C-Side’s Now or Never! Is pure rock, a decision that sets it apart from other Splatoon music, which always involve synths!! This perfectly reflects the change in setting from the trendy high tech big city to the grungy desert! It’s SO GOOD!! Not the best Now or Never! (I do prefer Splatoon’s unique style!) But it’s hard to beat the original! But it’s also easy to beat the original! I love you C Side!!!!
Okay, this has been Mod Cat Flopter, Logging Off! :3 see you next week!!
p.s. ichiya is a stupid bastard

As an SFX artist; what can you tell me about clowns? Why do you think they’ve become an icon of fear?
Coulrophobia!
Another long ramble ahead, consider yourself warned:
So I'm sure there's an actual psychological explanation for what makes clowns creepy, but I don't know it so this is just me speculating a bit.
A lot of intense personal fears are developed during childhood - you get attacked by bees, you develop a fear of bees; you nearly drown as a kid, you develop a fear of drowning. It's a learned fear response, meant to keep you from experiencing similar threats again, but it's strongest when we're children since they have fewer experiences to compare it to. I.e. a lifelong gardener with plenty of harmless experiences with bees is not going to develop a phobia from one bee sting, but a 6-year-old girl who has no other experiences with bees is likely to become afraid.
We can apply this same logic to clowns: they're something that is usually introduced to young children, since they're meant as children's entertainment, so a bad experience is more likely to leave you with lingering anxiety or reservations surrounding clowns.
I also think this is a bit of a positive feedback loop when it comes to clowns being seen as an icon of fear. One filmmaker chooses to make a clown-based horror film, a kid watches it too young and develops a lingering fear, kid grows up to write their own book or produce their own movie, it continues the cycle. Fear of sharks spiked tremendously after Jaws permeated homes, and It did the same for clowns.
I think this is true for any fear, really - it's not that clowns or sharks are innately more scary than another thing, but those particular works are so well-presented that they instill a fear in the audience. I could write a movie about... idk, a box of tissues, and if it's profoundly scary enough then it doesn't matter whether the tissues themselves are scary. It's all in how they're presented. And sure, filmmakers and authors will generally stick to something that has a bit more history, with the potential to hurt, since that gives a jump-start on the fear response, but I'd argue at the core of it that it doesn't matter.
I think the reason they've become an icon of fear rather than just something that's scary is because of the real-world connection, too. It's kind of a chicken-and-egg situation, but take something like John Wayne Gacy or the 2016 clown sightings across the continental US - whether these are inspired by creepy clowns in media, or whether the media is inspired by the real-world events, having something be real makes it scarier.
I talked before about how horror trends mimic the societal fears of their time period, and this is more of the same. If you watch a movie, and there is even the slightest inkling of belief that this could happen to you - that you'd spot a real creepy clown in the bushes on your way home from work - it makes that thing more scary. I mean, compare something like The Mist or Annihilation to something like Arachnophobia or Hush: they're completely different genres, yes, and the individual creatures in The Mist and Annihilation are definitely scary, but there's something extremely visceral about the latter movies because you could walk into a house infested with venomous spiders, you could look through the window one night and see a masked burglar aiming to break in, while you're much less likely to actually encounter mutated cosmic beings like that. Clowns are scary because they are something you could feasibly run into, without too many mental gymnastics to get there.
TL;DR: Clowns are scary because of childhood fear associations, a history of violence in real-world events, and the fact that they are mundane enough that the brain may misattribute fiction and reality.

2024 Sure is Starting Swiftly !
Happy new year ! This year I have a lot of exciting things I want to do art-wise. I finally finished a dated rough I wanted to have as an animated looping icon of Solliuth, Klair & Neth, the Thorn Trio ! They're nicknamed thorn trio because they're a pain if the asses of....some people. I'm not saying anything else but they're definitely up to something.
I've been working on this one veeery on and off for almost a full year. Really ? 2023 was not as good as 2022 in terms of art I guess.
Tumblr media
the little guy Solliuth !!! it's him. I've got a lot of roughs of him dating as far as 2015, the guy's old. Went through many, many iterations and I've had atleast 5 entirely different characters in his place.
Tumblr media
In his first iteration, he was some edgy cool guy who managed to pull back the curtains of reality, kinda matrix-style. But instead of hope and community, all it brought him was isolation and the feeling of never belonging.
Tumblr media
This one is from 2015 ^ And this one is from 2017 v
Tumblr media
There was this funny other iteration in 2016 where he was some aristocratic-looking fantasy guy, greatly inspired by the Stanley Parable - he was called the Narrator in this idea. He also had a really cool mustache. This one is from 2016 v
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
( ^ the Narrator from 2017, as part of an attempt for a rough comic that wasnt going anywhere)
I since completely separated this guy from Solliuth, as I started realizing that maybe having a bit of Focus was a great idea if I wanted to tell stories with him. So now he's just a regular guy, no reality-peeling shtick, no Narrating gimmick. This Narrator guy though....I might be bringing him back in my roster for.....newer, cooler purposes
Tumblr media
(^2023)
Anyway, back to actual Solliuth ! Man, Narrators huh. They keep imprinting themselves onto the narrative don't they. Whatever. I still need to actually write down scripts about his misadventures, I have a lot of ideas as to what his story is about, I want to make it as good as possible.
Tumblr media
I used to conceptualize him as a much more boring character, him being essentially the most main-protagonist-typed oc of mine I feel. He used to be somewhat evil, and......well he still is somewhat, but there's a lot of extra steps in his characterization I want to go through. He's kind of a mystery even to me, sometimes he looks chill, sometimes fucking intense, sometimes he's a good guy, sometimes a very bad one. It'll take a while before I manage to properly write him, and I can't wait.
Tumblr media
I'll save all of that thinking to when I get to scripting his shit, although it's not in the plans yet. I have other projects (probably Cherrypick-focused) I want to work on, as well as a refsheet for a new (old) character I hope I'll be done with for this year's artfight. But to close off this post, here's a cool 2023 sketch of the man Solliuth. For whoever is reading this. You reached the end, and therefore are deserving of enjoying this one.
Tumblr media
Happy new year, again ! Hope this one is better than 2023 for me, art-wise. I'll see how I manage.

Has Tessa ever said what her favorite costume was since retiring/the comeback? I know she once said her original Carmen costume but that was I think in 2016? I’d love so much to hear her talk more about her packaging and what she enjoyed wearing the most!
So, you didn’t know it but this innocent question has sent me down a very odd path lol. I remembered her liking a dress she wore in 2006; wouldn’t have remembered her Carmen answer off the top of my head but recalled it from your question; and realized that due to the sheer number of interviews or appearances she’s done later in her career, that there is a lot that I don’t know without research.
So off I went, and a quick Google search led me to some answers about Carmen. The dress from 2006 was in my brain already so I didn’t try to dig very hard for that. And I was hitting a wall about anything in more recent years.
My original searches on my own blog were fairly useless, because tumblr, but I when I went to find my links to 2006, I found this answer to a question on Tessa’s costumes from 2020.
Ironically, in comparison, this time I had no trouble with the Carmen answer - threecupsfull has a great compilation of that answer, which came from the post-Sochi but pre-comeback era. One of her answers also alluded to the bustle dress of 2006 (or so I thought but I’ll gee to that in a moment!).
The second time was in my own 2020 answer, because the 2009 compulsory Paso Doble dress link is also broken. The original link name was basically that it was to an interview with The Loop, a now defunct branch of CTV, and in which she credits her mom as one if her style icons; further research showed that the interview was from 2018 (the story linked here is about her Ellen jumpsuit, but further in is the same broken link that I have to her costume comment). So now I’m extra glad that I (or someone else) copied down what she had to say about that costume!
I was reminded all over again how many pictures/interviews/videos of VM have been lost to a general search with broken links and removed content. Not the first time or the last time I’ll lament that.
Meanwhile, though I always recalled the bustle costume, I am thrown all over again about the interview in which she stated it. I think it may have been debated years ago, because she says it was their first year in junior, for the OD. That dress was her polka dots, and the program, Tutti Frutti, certainly matches her description of fast footwork, but the dress to me, doesn’t have a bustle - it has a crinoline. (Looking at the back, there could be a little more fabric there, so she could have been correct but just not in how I think of a bustle.) I have spent a long time believing she meant her 2006/2007 dress, which she wore for compulsories, because it had a bustle - but it matches nothing else of her description, and given when she did the interview, is not something she would mix up with something from earlier seasons. So I’ve been wrong for ages lol!
Tumblr media
Tears on my Pillow/Tutti Frutti OD, 2003/2004. You can just make out the extra fabric at the back, but the entire skirt had a blue crinoline for a fun thematic costume.
Tumblr media
Golden Waltz compulsory dress, 2006/2007. The dress I have assumed through some incorrect years, with a distinct bustle at the back, appropriate for a waltz. Not on Tessa’s list, lol.
Tumblr media
Carmen, 2012/2013, with the ‘deep V and lace sleeves and ruffles’. Also, an exposed back and again, some extra fabric at the rear of the skirt.
Tumblr media
Paso Doble compulsory, 2009. A dramatic, crinolined skirt, another flower embellishment, deep V and exposed back. Ignore Scott’s horrible shirt lol (genuinely one of my least favourite Scott costumes for this dance).
I imagine her favourite costumes might be influenced by factors that we don’t really take into consideration - was it good memories associated with it, was it comfortable, was it dramatic? Whereas I think most of us are more about if it was pretty, or moved well or photographed well (as that’s how we mostly saw it) or had some detail that we appreciate (the Farrucas skirt, for example, or how I love that the Prince jumpsuit showed off their lines). I think it would be really interesting to find out Tessa’s opinions on her costumes, if she had a chance to think about it, and with the benefit of distance now, from her skating career.

Okay I'm gonna say this once before disability pride month ends and then it's gonna be out of my system: Doctor Strange is a disabled icon, and the way he's handled (in the MCU, at least) provides so much that I, as a person who grew up with a physical disability, have wanted for a very, very long time in disability representation. The short version is:
His disability, which is acquired during Doctor Strange (2016), stays a part of him; he never becomes not disabled, and his narrative arc moves away from healing his disability and focuses on other things, including personal growth
In the time loop with Dormammu, he saves the world through his intellect and his familiarity with chronic pain. His chronic pain is portrayed as an asset
Magic becomes his accessibility aid, but it never completely heals him; he is still, fundamentally, disabled and seemingly cannot physically do all tasks with his hands even with the aid of magic
Magic (the accessibility aid) empowers him. Literally, he gets superpowers from the thing he sought as his aid. How cool is that, and how subversive is that narrative compared to the mainstream belief that aids are some kind of "burden" on disabled people?
He fulfills a variety of roles to his supporting cast, who never infantilize him, and is as complex and multifaceted as he was before his disability
The writers never infantilize him either; he's given a love life, is poised as a father figure, and is forced to face the consequences of his (sometimes reckless) actions
In the MCU, he's a prime example of media shifting away from tired tropes about disability, and as a flagship character for a highly visible, multi-billion-dollar franchise, he paves the way for many other characters to continue to shift media towards more positive and complex portrayals of disability
Full thoughts are below the cut!
It's common knowledge that Doctor Strange's hands are mangled in a car accident, with permanent nerve damage resulting from his injuries and the countless fruitless surgeries to repair them. The first movie almost seems to be setting his narrative up to fulfill the tired old trope of "character with a disability embarks on a journey to heal said disability, and does so successfully, often through miraculous/supernatural means". This is the lowest and lamest form of representation, of course, because it treats disability as a narrative crutch, an identity that can be donned to start the Hero's Journey and doffed once said journey has been completed. These narratives in media contribute to the toxic idea of "if you just try hard enough, you'll overcome it!" and the other equally toxic idea of "disabled people who 'overcome their disability' are the best kinds of disabled people!". Moreover, they just feel like an inordinate slap in the face to those of us who are stuck with our conditions lifelong and were so excited to see a character who was like us and had an interesting story where the end result wasn't, surprise, becoming not like us any longer.
But then Doctor Strange takes a hard turn and no longer just wants to use his magic to heal his hands. In fact, his hands become the secondary narrative, and his fight against the Zealots becomes the primary narrative...and I love it. This primary narrative finishes with Doctor Strange trapping Dormammu by sacrificing himself in an endless time loop; this is an intellectual power-play that utilizes his best attributes (his cleverness, his intellect, his stubbornness and iron will, his deep underlying need to help people, and, surprise!, his familiarity with chronic pain!!) to literally save the world. Let me say that again: his familiarity with chronic pain is one of the things that lets him save the world.
In subsequent movies, magic becomes his accessibility aid. He's able to use his magic to help his hands be better at some things, but that doesn't necessarily mean that he can do everything with his hands now (see that one scene early in DS:MoM where he chooses to tie his tie with magic instead of with his hands physically on his tie). At the same time, his accessibility aid--magic--is also fucking awesome. He has incredible superpowers because of it; portals, spells, shields, blasts of energy, whips--it's literally the coolest accessibility aid possible. He's still a disabled person; he can't heal himself, and he still can't physically do everything with his hands, even with the aid of magic. But he's an empowered disabled person. He's one of the strongest superheroes; the odds of orchestrating Thanos' defeat would have been astronomically miniscule without him, and he's shown to be capable time and time again in battle.
His hands and his disability never again become the narrative, either. His story doesn't need to focus on that, and so it doesn't. Instead, we get to see Doctor Strange, a disabled man, being snarky and sassy with Tony Stark. We get to see Doctor Strange doing his best to help out Peter Parker--and, importantly, suffering the real-world consequences of his well-intentioned, but reckless, actions. We get to see Doctor Strange dealing with heartbreak with Christine, fulfilling the role of found father figure to America Chavez, and seeking solace and understanding in Wong. He's written as a whole person, and he's never infantalized by his supporting cast. Neither is he infantilized by the writers and shielded from the consequences of his own actions.
I genuinely, honestly hope that the Marvel writers never give Doctor Strange an out from his disability. I pray that they continue to treat him as the full and complex character he's been fleshed out to be. In the comics, they returned his non-disabled hands to him, and I think you can imagine why I disliked that so intensely. He doesn't need his hands to be healed to do great things, but plenty of irl disabled people need to see the media's narrative around disability start to move away from tired old tropes and toxic positivity. Doctor Strange does that for us, and, as a flagship character in a highly visible, multi-billion-dollar franchise, he paves the way for many more characters to begin doing that, too.

”Pinky”
The story of Tornado GR4 ZG750....
ZG750 aka “Pinky” was the 690th Tornado IDS off the production line. Released into service with the RAF in 1991, the aircraft spent most of its life doing important but unglamorous work in its capacity as a twin-stick trainer. Ironically considering its infamous paint scheme, ZG750 (like all twin-stickers), never saw any operational service.ZG750’s moment in the sun came in 2016 when it was painted in its famous pink livery to celebrate the 25 years that had elapsed since the Tornado made its operational debut in the Gulf War (Op GRANBY). The star of the Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT) 2016, with its new paint-scheme in place, the aircraft rapidly became a firm favorite with the fans (and crews!). The aircraft was a regular fixture through the Mach Loop low level training area although its iconic status was severely threatened before it had really begun when it was grounded for several months shortly after receiving its new paint scheme, with cracking in the wing roots. Finally repaired, Pinky remained a firm fixture on the circuit until it was retired in 2017 and subsequently stripped of useful components before being scrapped.

Reading and Response #3- Projection: Vanishing and Becoming by Sean Cubitt
Sean Cubitt dives into some of the fundamentals of drawing and painting. He examines these principles and how they translate into video and film. Cubitt begins his article by historically diving into the Buddhist tale of the origin of art and how it compares to Pliny’s story of the origins of paining and use of light and shadows. These tales go into the origin of use of line, light, reflection, shadow, and projection. Projection is a very important word in this article. From artists projecting light and shadows onto prints, as well as lines and colors; Cubitt also explores the metaphorical meaning of projection. How we as humans use projection. It is vital in childhood and human development. Think back to when we were children and could not communicate properly with words we would have to project emotion to get across what we were needing. Projection could be literal, metaphorical, implied, etc. In video art you are able to project all of the above. With the creation of film and cameras artist had the ability to visually project their message. Rather that message be direct or implied, the artist had more resources at their fingertips to create their visual work. Art is considered a way to preserve. Video would be the ultimate preservation tool. To capture a moment in time, forever. A way to outlive Father Time. This made me think if this is something video artists consider when starting their project. Is that part of the purpose of using video? For this particular artwork to “cheat death”. With today’s technology like the internet and media platforms, even if a video is deleted does it really “die” or does it live forever in some spaces? Do artists consider that aspect today?
5 examples of time based art/video art/film/cinematic artist:
Tumblr media
William Kentridge (South African, born 1955). The Refusal of Time, 2012. Five-channel digital video installation, black-and-white and color, sound, 30 min. Steel megaphones, and a breathing machine ("elephant"), dimensions variable. Jointly owned by The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, 2013. Purchased for The Metropolitan Museum of Art with Roy R. and Marie S. Neuberger Foundation Inc. and Wendy Fisher Gifts and The Raymond and Beverly Sackler 21st Century Art Fund (2013.250). © William Kentridge. All rights reserved.

Video Flag, 1995, Nam June Paik. Pictured on view at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in 1996. “Video Flag’s enormous bank of 70 14 in. CRT monitors represents the American flag’s stars and stripes through flashing imagery of technological advances and iconic moments from American politics: news stills, rotating shots of the State of Liberty, scrolling streams of zeros and ones (the binary language of computers), and a morphing sequence portraying U.S. president portraits, from Harry S. Truman to Bill Clinton. The always-present image of the flag serves as a backdrop against which these individual cultural events, personas, and technologies are experienced, recalled, and understood.” https://www.si.edu/tbma/work/video-flag
Tumblr media
Pipilotti Rist, Open my Glade, Times Square, 2016. “For instance, he work of Pipilotti Rist is notable in the proportions that Video Art has taken in recent decades. In 2016, she was selected to exhibit her work in Times Square. The artwork consisted of 62 video screens, monumental in size, right in the middle of all the advertising screens in Times Square. On these 62 screens, looping over several days, numerous videos were shown. There, in the middle of one of the most emblematic squares of capitalism, she smashed her face against a window that was placed just a few centimeters from the camera lens. Her face deformed, her makeup spread out, she questioned, brutally, the gaze that the spectator has on feminine beauty.” https://blog.artsper.com/en/a-closer-look/what-is-video-art/

Looking for Langston, 1988. Photograph: Bfi/Sankofa Film/Kobal/Rex/Shutterstock
Isaac Julien | Looking for Langston, 1989
“More than a tribute to the American poet Langston Hughes and the Harlem Renaissance, Julien’s film is a powerful meditation on the history of black gay desire, the intersection of queer and black politics with art and activism, poetry and prejudice. The action plays out against a soundtrack mixing 1920s jazz and anachronistic 1980s disco.” https://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2020/oct/17/warhol-steve-mcqueen-a-history-of-video-art-barbara-london
Tumblr media
Lorna, 1984, interactive videodisk installation, infinite duration, video stills
“With Lorna, Lynn Hershman Leeson created the first art work that used laserdisk technology. Exploiting the interactive capabilities of the medium, the artist enables users to explore and intervene in the world of an agoraphobic woman named Lorna.” https://www.lynnhershman.com/project/interactivity/

@turbulentpumpkin43 tagged me for a thing I misunderstood as "five songs you have been listening to a lot lately" instead of "five songs you listen to [in general]." Because in general is so big and I've already typed all of this up, here's this list in no particular order and my sincerest apologies for the error.
Chainsaw Blood by Vaundy. I've been catching up on the Chainsaw Man anime after finishing the manga (boy!! what a manga!!), so I now spend a LOT of time on the abundance of kickass OP and ED music. Obviously KICKBACK is unbelievable good and I'm also a HUGE fan of In the Back Room (I always like syudou), Chainsaw Blood has an energy I find really infectious. I wish the visuals for the ED animation had been a bit more memorable, but it's an incredibly vibrant song so I can't really complain. Between Chainsaw Man and Mob Psycho 100 I feel like I've heard some stuff with amazing energy lately! I'd like to seek out more of Vaundy's music.
Seven Sisters by The Sword. I keep returning to this one lately. Great song! I've been a fan for many years. I think lately I've been been especially captivated by "oh, he wonders, how much there is to know / and how long it will take him to learn it as he goes." And of course "spring submits to summer, summer bows to fall / autumn leaves lay down and die at the winter's beck and call." I love the visuals in The Sword's music! I've re-listened to a lot of the stuff off Apocryphon over this fall.
Borderline by Tove Styrke. Over the weekend I suddenly remembered this song that I think I saw in an AMV in 2016 and I felt compelled to hear it again. I dunno why?? It's alright. Easy to listen to. I wish I had rudimentary animation skills when I listen to it. I wanna take that chorus and make one of those very classic edgy fan animations. One day...
Unravel by TK from Ling tosite sigure. After making jokes at anime karaoke that I was going to manifest Tristian Unravel into this world, I got sucked back into the loop of listening to it on repeat again. Great song. Highly recommend if you haven't heard this true icon. I can still sing most of it unaided. I intend to regain the ability to do the whole song!!! I have a sincere, pure love for it. Tokyo Ghoul had a lot of good music. Anyway. I think I'm going to put it on the Tristian playlist right now.
Begin Again by Knife Party. I find it very pleasant! I really like Abandon Ship as a whole, but Reconnect and Begin Again are my favorites and Begin Again is what I've snagged on lately. Relaxing music, joyful, makes me see images. The good stuff. I have a lot of fondness for Knife Party and Pendulum.

Because I'm bored and it's almost the Christmas season I thought I might rank the John Lewis Christmas adverts over the last few years. For anyone who doesn't know John Lewis is a pretty big department store in the UK and its kinda a Christmas tradition that they release these fairly elaborate Christmas adverts every year.
I know this is just capitalist pandering and I'm ultimately playing into systems which are destroying the world and meaning of holidays.... anyway.
The 2012 advert is pretty good, people really like this one apparently and while it's a nice simple message it's too vague for me. I don't really feel anything out of watching it and the song isn't that good imo. 5/10
youtube
2013 is a tough one, on the one hand the designs are wonderful and Lilly Allen is an icon. Looking at the behind the scenes I realised that this at least partially animated by stop motion bur I dunno, something about this one still just doesn't click for me. I do like the whole message of sticking together despite differences but as a whole it's not really my favourite 6/10
youtube
I love Monty the penguin so much but the song isn't that good and just feels a tad off hut otherwise pretty great. I felt this penguins need to feel togetherness with another on a very deep level but the thing with the toys at the end just kind of doesn't click for me. 5/10
youtube
FINALLY! The reason I have been obsessed with these adverts for almost a decade now. Instant classic, instant tears, song is perfect, message is good, overall vibe is cute. I go feral for the bit where the party sound cuts out and the old man is all alone and then it comes back when he gets the telescope. 2015 is flawless, genuinely imo 1000/10
youtube
2016 was a bad year for all of us, wasn't it. This included, I like foxes but the cgi isn't great and it's kinda just a repeat of 2014. I also feel it lacks any real critical message that all the other ones have had, I know this sounds idiotic but this one feels the most like an ad and only an ad. 4/10
youtube
I've actually never seen this one before I started this post.... there's a reason for that. The songs okay and I do actually like this kid and monster interacting but as a whole I think it has the opposite problem of 2016 where its trying to do a lot with very little. It feels forced and its not very good imo, also it loses points for kinda copping out in the end. 6/19
youtube
I gotta preface this by saying The Sun is bad and if you can find this video on a different YouTube channel please link below.
That aside, I love Elton John, he's a personal favourite of mine and I think in a time where arts programmes and the value of stuff like that gets diminished it is kinda of beautiful to visualise the impact nurturing musical talent can have on people. This feels like a very short version of Rocket man and it wouldn't shock me if they drew a little inspiration from this advert. It's not the most emotional and i think i take points off for kinda just doing Elton John whose basically guaranteed to please people but yeah, 8/10
youtube
This. This right here, one fucked up little guy, Edgar is my blorbo and I adore him. This is what 2017 wished it was. The little fantasy town is nice and the cover of the song is honestly pretty good. The general vibe is also good because it's a little sad and that's what I'm looking for tbh. 8/10
youtube
I honestly kinda of like the visual aesthetic of this one with the mixed media approach of stop motion, traditional imagination and papercraft. I like the message of this one a lot because I'm a suckered for the positive choices having wide ranging positive impact on the world. The one problem I have is the pacing is a little off and the time loop at the end feels kinda unnecessary 8/10
youtube
I have grown to like this one a bit more but u very vividly remember watching the 2021 advert and not liking it. I think it might be the alien, they don't look that alien and I'm not a huge fan of ET which this is a pretty blatant play on. While I do like the message of sharing culture and peace on earth and there's a few moments worth noting it's just kinda mid for me, the kiss at the end also kinda weirds me out but thats probably my own thoughts on this being a kind of ET homage clouding that. As I said I've softened on it but its still a 6/10
youtube
I dunno maybe this whole list is asinine and a wasteful glorification of capitalism and I should do something better with my evening
...
JUST WHEN I THINK IM OUT THEY PULL ME BACK IN. Boy howdy did I feel some things while watching this that I pressumed an advert could never stir within me. I really relate to the Taylor Swift lyric "I've never been a natural, all I do is try, try, try" and man does this hit the spot! Also I think this might he the most solidified message since 2015 because I think foster care and the general care system is so important in our society and its nice to use this platform to bring attention to a worthwhile cause. Bonus points I've included a link to the song in this one because it's sung by a semi creepy sad clown man, which is obviously a plus (I like to think he recorded the version in this advert in the full get up). Great, spot on, Christmas miracle (tm) 1001/10

i’ll go for f, k, n & u for the fandom asks 😊
Ask game
F - What’s the longest you’ve ever been in a fandom?
I've been in this fandom since 2020 so I guess this might be my longest one? I have also been on and off into Fate (/stay night, /zero, /grand order) for at least 3 years since 2016. I do tend to revisit old fandoms, bar a select few.
Actually, no. My longest fandom was Batman. From the ages of 2-11 and then revisited for a year when I was 19. A decade in 1 fandom but does it count...
K - What character has your favorite development arc/the best development arc?
Jesse Pinkman, Breaking Bad.
N - Name three things you wish you saw more or in your main fandom (or a fandom of choice).
More Draco focused fics outside of Drarry and Dramione. More of a focus on his relationship with his family and his development of an identity that isn't tied to them or his romantic partner.
I would like to read more fics that have an understanding of the organic nature of magic in HP. Worldbuilding not being so tied to the assumptions of our modern, tech heavy world. Wizards don't have landlines, let alone mobile phones, and magical pictures don't 'restart' when they reach the end of the 'loop'. They aren't gifs.
BotTom
U - Three favorite characters from three different fandoms, and why they’re your favorites.
Hmmmm I'll avoid the obvious, ie. my current fandom.
Gilgamesh (Fate/Zero) - he's psycho and shiny. What more could you want?
Tom Ripley (TTMR) - weirdest character ever. People-pleasing anxious psychopath. Ace icon. I could write a thesis on him.
Laurent (Captive Prince) - the INTJ that all INTJs think they are. He's everything I want from a character. Truly an ideal fave (and Lamen is an ideal ship).
Thanks for the ask 🥰

Ascending New Heights: Let’s Check Out Mount Tripyramid North Peak, Zealand, Bondcliff, and Willey
Mount Tripyramid North Peak - Elevation: 4180 ft
Difficulty Level: Like Middle Tripyramid (see previous blog post), the north peak is generally viewed as a difficult trek. Since it is about 0.7 miles away from Middle Tripyramid, this is another chance to hit both summits. While this is an amazing opportunity, I would like to stress that it is a strenuous hike with rock slab portions. I am personally not a fan of hiking rock slabs during the colder months, so please note the immense danger this can bring (especially with precipitation). One must come prepared in the winter months with spikes, snowshoes, and additional gear for climbing icier parts.
Trail: The two most popular trails to access the summit are North Tripyramid via Livermore Trail and the Mount Tripyramid Loop Trail. AllTrails link below:

North Tripyramid via Livermore Trail, New Hampshire - 23 Reviews, Map | AllTrails

Basis, S. (n.d.-c). Hiking Mount Tripyramid Loop via North Slide in White Mountain National Forest, New Hampshire StAV is lost. https://www.stavislost.com/hikes/trail/mount-tripyramid-loop-via-north-slide
Zealand Mountain- Elevation: 4260 ft
Difficulty Level: With Zealand Mountain, we drop back down to a moderate hike, with less treacherous terrain. While this hike may be less strenuous than North Tripyramid, it is important to note that this is another wooded summit. If you are looking for a view, I recommend taking the time to walk to Zeacliff, which can be accessed via the Twinway trail (connects Zeacliff to the summit of Zealand mountain). I will link below.
Trail: For this blog series, I have been linking only AllTrails links. The first link is from AllTrails (via Zealand Trail and Appalachian Trail), but the second link is from hikingandfishing.com. It provides more detailed directions for accessing Zealand trail, Zealand falls, Zealand falls hut, Zeacliff, and finally the summit. I strongly recommend taking the time to explore the option. Links Below:

Bondcliff - Elevation: 4265 ft
Difficulty Level: Bondcliff is another strenuous and long hike. I recommend Bondcliff to hikers once they have completed at least five hikes over 10 miles long. This is not to discourage anyone. Like most of the NH48’s, it is a hard hike with a large payoff in views. See the picture below for the iconic shot that you must take once completing the trek! As always, I want to highlight that this is another opportunity to peak bag, with Mount Bond and West Bond right near. With Bondcliff, the hike is over 18 miles, with Mount Bond and West Bond, the hike is about 22 miles. Because this, is a rather long out and back trail, it is common for hikers to camp at the end, and return to their cars the next day. Even if one does not plan to camp, I advise hikers to bring extra food, gear, and layers just in case.
Trail:  As previously mentioned, it is extremely popular for hikers to continue on and peak bag both Mount Bond and West Bond after Bondcliff. Bondcliff and these two mountains can be accessed via the out and back Lincoln Woods Trail that becomes the Bondcliff Trail. AllTrails link below:

Mount Willey - Elevation: 4285 ft
Difficulty Level: With Mount Willey we find ourselves back at an easy-moderate hike, and a much shorter hike than Bondcliff. As mentioned previously (see post about Mount Tom), this is an opportunity to peak bag Mount Field and Mount Tom via the Willey Range trail. If you decide to do this, the difficulty level will increase, as it lengthens the hike.
Trail: The two most popular trails to summit Mount Willey are via the Mount Willey Trail or via the Willey Range Trail. If you do not wish to peak bag, I recommend the Mount Willey trail, as it is a shorter out and back trail with amazing views! AllTrails links below:

Fort Hill (Cuyahoga County)
State Route 252
North Olmsted, OH
Fort Hill, located in the Rocky River Reservation east of North Olmsted, OH, is an iconic landmark that is one of the most picturesque locations in the Emerald Necklace of parks surrounding Cleveland, OH. The Fort Hill Stairs ascend to stunning views 90 feet above the east and west branches of the Rocky River. The site was added to the National Register of Historic Places on July 25, 1974.  After significant movement of the shale cliff alongside the steps, the original 135 steps were removed for the safety of visitors. Following the process of removal, construction of 155 new stairs began in late May 2016, opening in November 2016. In addition to growing the stair count by 20 steps, they are fifty percent wider, measuring six feet across.
The Fort Hill Loop Trail is a pleasant, easy trail that climbs over 155 steps to reach Fort Hill. Once up top, people should be sure to give themselves time to enjoy the great views of the natural surroundings.  The 4.6-mile Fort Hill loop trail near Cleveland is generally considered a moderately challenging route and takes an average of 1 hour 33 minutes to complete. This is a very popular area for birding, hiking, and running, so visitors will likely encounter other people while exploring. The trail is open year-round and is beautiful to visit anytime. Dogs are welcome, but must be on a leash.

Music in Games
Friday Night Funkin':
youtube
Friday Night Funkin' is a rhythm game to do with hitting arrows to the music, there is an upcoming rapper that wants to rap battle every person he sees and throughout the game the difficulty gets harder and harder, the music conveys the different atmospheres and what is happening around the people who are rap battling.
Incredibox:
youtube
Incredibox is a make your own music type game, you use the different icons and drag them onto the people, I think it is really cool because there are so many different beats and songs you can make with the provided sounds and loops.
Geometry Dash:
youtube
Geometry Dash is a game in which you are a square that is jumping over spikes and obstacles to the beat of a song, it is a very simple concept but it is done so well that it is a very entertaining and rewarding game.
DOOM (2016):
youtube
DOOM (2016) is a first person shooter game, music plays a huge part in the games atmosphere and aesthetic. The music's volume is low and on a loop then when you do damage to something suddenly the music's volume increases and starts playing a full song and it increases more and more depending on how much damage you have done/how many things you have killed in that area.
Hi-Fi RUSH:
youtube
Hi-Fi RUSH is a third person, pve, fighting game, the main mechanic/gimmick is hitting enemies with your guitar on beat with the music. These attacks do more damage so it is going to make you want to time your attacks. I like how the music is implemented into the action of the game.

Week 2: Find 10 examples by creatives specifically from Aotearoa (New Zealand)
Tumblr media
Object of Devotion by Jim Wheeler
His sculptures contemplate nature and show how humans are part of it. Macrocosm contains microcosm. Finding human nature in nature is his spiritual practise in sculpting. He illustrates the interdependence of all living beings and their environment. Nature is our most perfect system and should inspire our society.
Tumblr media
Upon a Pond by artist Seung Yul Oh at Albany Stadium Pool.
Tumblr media
Drop a Loop by artist Seung Yul Oh at Albany Stadium Pool.
Upon a Pond and Drop a Loop combine Oh’s humour, brilliant colours, and interaction with pool enjoyment, water, and playfulness. They exhibit swimming pool water in its various phases and make art part of everyday life.
Tumblr media
Justice by Lisa Reihana
Lisa Reihana’s Justice covers the Ellen Melville Centre’s O'Connell Street wall. Ellen Melville, legislator, women’s champion, lawyer, and pioneer, inspired a bronze scales of justice sculpture. The bronze shape floats above a 1950s-style abstract wall artwork.
Tumblr media
I Love You / Aroha atu, Aroha mai
“A BRIGHT AND BEAUTIFUL DECLARATION OF LOVE TRANSFORMS THIS PARKING BUILDING IN MANUKAU, WITH WORDS SHINING IN COLOURS OF THE RAINBOW.”
This neon art makes the scenery of Manukau more interesting and turns one of its most useful buildings into a monument to love. Lonnie Hutchinson, an artist, put two statements, one in English and one in Te Reo Mori, on the outside of this small parking lot in the town centre. Attached to two outside stairwells in the bright colours of the rainbow, the artwork says “I Love You” on one side and “Aroha atu, Aroha mai” on the other, telling people that they are welcome and part of the community. “Love given, love returned” is what the Mori saying “aroha atu, aroha mai” means.
Tumblr media
The Lighthouse / Tū Whenua-a-Kura
“THIS CLASSIC 1950S STATE HOUSE SITS AT THE WATER’S EDGE, WITH NEON LIGHTS REPRESENTING THE CONSTELLATIONS AND A POLISHED SCULPTURE OF CAPTAIN COOK INSIDE.”
One of New Zealand’s most well-known living artists, Michael Michael Parekwhai, created the 8.5-meter-tall sculpture. It looks like a full-size 1950s state house. Weatherboards, windows, shutters, a brick chimney, and a burnt-red front door are all parts of the house. Inside, though, there is no furniture or other signs of suburban life. Instead, there is an installation of bright lights and a sculpture made of highly polished stainless steel called “The English Channel.” It shows Captain Cook sitting on a stool and looking down.
Tumblr media
Beacon, a new sculpture by Auckland artist Lang Ea made of shiny stainless steel in the shape of a circle, has arrived at Milford Reserve. It is sure to make people feel welcome as they walk their dogs and get some fresh air during the COVID-19 lockdown.
Tumblr media
Misery (Tanya Jade McMillan) and Tomtom (her husband) made the boards below. They are icons in the New Zealand street art scene, and Misery is one of New Zealand’s best-known female pop and wall artists. Tomtom is a tattoo artist, and his style can be seen. In these pictures, you can also see that she has Tahitian and Chinese roots.
Tumblr media
Heart of the City, Fort st, Auckland (2016)
Sara Hughes, a well-known artist from Auckland, made the newest Hearts of the City piece. See for yourself at Fort Lane.
Her Hearts of the City piece is a spectacular burst of colour that makes references to the art deco and heritage places in Auckland.
Tumblr media
Toi T Toi Ora: Contemporary Mori Art is the most important look at modern Maori art ever done. It includes over 300 works by 110 Maori artists from the 1950s to the present day. Four great Maori artists will have their work shown at Britomart.
