Art on magnets. https://mistysworldboutique.etsy.com Purchases from link give me rewards. ⁣ This is "Nymphs Finding the Head of Orpheus" by John William Waterhouse.⁣ ⁣ Orpheus was a great musician in Ancient Greek mythology. The god Apollo taught him to play the lyre when he was young. He perfected it to the point where his music could charm animals and even make the trees & rocks dance.🎵🌳🪨 Probably like one of those cars with the loud stereos and booming bass that makes windows vibrate and furniture dance when they drive by 🙉.⁣ ⁣ He joined a group called "Jason and the Argonauts". I don't know what kind of music they played, but they're famous for looking for a Golden Fleece. I think that means to fleece someone out of their gold. ⁣ ⁣ They came upon an all-girl band known as the Sirens who had once sang to a whole ship's crew, piloted by a guy named Homer (not Simpson). When the Argonauts met the Sirens, they had a musical contest.🎶 The Sirens sang well, but Orpheus played better and louder, so he and the Argonauts stayed together.⁣ ⁣ Orpheus married a lady named Eurydice. They were happy until one day a rowdy neighborhood satyr chased Eurydice. She tripped and fell into a nest of vipers and died.⁣🐍 ⁣ Orpheus went to the Underworld to try to recover her. He played music so well that Hades consented on the condition they not look back. Upon reaching the world of the living, Orpheus looked back at Eurydice in happiness. But she hadn't quite exited yet, so the deal was broken and she was gone again, forever.⁣ ⁣ Orpheus went around lamenting everywhere, until a wild mob tore him apart, probably in some lawless place like East St Louis.🙀 His head kept singing so the mob did the natural thing under such circumstances. They threw it in the river.⁣ ⁣ In this painting, his head is discovered by a pair of nymphs. Such a thing may be normal today in the Chicago River or the Meadowlands of New Jersey, but it probably wasn't so common in the River Herbrus. They look a bit concerned, maybe because the drinkability of the water is now in question.⁣ ⁣ The head prophesied until the oracle became more famous than Apollo, at which point Apollo told him to knock it off, or to quit while he was a-head.🤦🏼‍♀️

From the lockdown files  

My earliest quarantine project. A self-portrait about confinement, feeling imprisoned even though surrounded by things I love, staying in one’s bubble, and the sensation of being suspended in time. In some ways spring 2022 seems like the glimmer of hope is finally getting brighter. In other ways it feels like the calm before the storm. I’m entering the season with equal parts trepidation and cautious optimism. The mask mandate was lifted here a while ago, and like everyone else I’m starved for some semblance of normalcy. I know opinions vary, and where you stand is your business [I’m not here to argue], but personally I still don’t feel safe in many indoor spaces (e.g., grocery store aisles) or crowded outdoor venues (e.g., concerts) unless I have a mask at my disposal. Even though I’m vaxed and boosted, masking for some situations is the “new normal” as far as I’m concerned. I’m glad the snow has melted so I can begin entertaining on my patio again, but chairs will remain spaced 6 feet apart while I continue to curb my touchy-feely nature. I’m longing for the day when I no longer feel like I’m endangering the vulnerable people in my life by kissing them on the cheek, or risking my own health by shaking a stranger’s hand. Given that new lockdowns and new variants are still regular news, I feel like that day is still very far away.

Great fun this week - its the end of half term ‘Drawing Week’ and all staff are contributing with sessions proposing and demonstrating ways to make art with non traditional media. Here students are being shown how to make zoom portraits with coffee and today building up collages and print and drawing work with newspapers and materials found in the home.
