okay I’m currently going through my Spotify wrapped through the years and it’s a mess

2016: we don’t talk about it… lots of music my mom listened to and she basically shaped my taste in music back then. The songs are pretty alright… but then there’s some songs I don’t wanna talk about because it’s embarrassing (generic pop and other stuff you listen to at 13), bit of twenty one pilots tho… I found them in this year

2017: experimenting with music myself… we have twenty one pilots, against the current (a LOT), Dat Adam (also a lot), some kpop, generic pop and still some mom influences from the year before

2018: a BIG mess… from the descendants soundtrack over my chemical romance/twenty one pilots/fall out boy over the same kpop from the year before over some 80s bangers over piano music to dubfx/monolink (electronic/dance/reggae) with some more 2016/17 mom influences and don’t forget the basic pop

2019: uhm can you tell trench released end of the year before? Definitely… the whole album and more twenty one pilots is featured predominantly in this year… loads of 80s, billie eilish, some fall out boy/p!atd… and some pop (that is getting better tho) and the same electronic/… mix

2020: twenty one pilots obviously, cavetown, ajr, (children’s) film music and random songs I thought were cool… dinosaurs in love (a highlight), Lorde, still the electronic/… mix, oh and girl in red

2021: all the gay™ songs, one direction/Louis Tomlinson/Harry Styles (yep, I had my 1D phase… like 10 years too late), Grace Vanderwaal was a big one, Ruelle (yes, I also had my shadowhunters/Malec phase)… still twenty one pilots, but not as much

2022: glass animals (yes, dnf phase)… still the gay™ songs, lots of songs I heard in series/movies, twenty one pilots, 80s stuff (I listened to music for 105.706 minutes that year… that’s 1761,76 h… or 73,41 days… or 10,49 weeks… or 2,62 months)

honestly I’m glad my taste in music is getting better… I can’t even look at the 2016 playlist without wanting to slap my younger self into some senses (I mean the good foundation of knowing who twenty one pilots were were there, I just didn’t really use it)… 2018 for sure was my self discovery phase and I think 2019/2020 was when I finally discovered my taste in music (it’s still all over the place but at least it’s music I actually enjoy)

Honestly I might even know what my 2023 wrapped kinda looks like… but I guess I’ll only see in like November…

Steal My Girl: I like what this track initially put down. Really loud and stadiumesque bass, which is generally a one-way-ticket to "bec likes this song"-ville. but it keeps backing down for them to sing their verses, and personally I prefer constant auditory assault from said stadium-shaking bass+beats, but the loud chorus makes up for it. it's a little slow and plodding, but it's definitely a happy song. enjoyable! not likely to be on heavy rotation for me, but I won't skip it if it comes up. I do appreciate a good "na na na na nana". Banger. ✅

Ready to Run: the opening of this song is so nostalgic ahahah it sounds like that whole slate of acoustic guitar songs from the late 2000s. I like that! I wasn't as big of a fan when the full instrumental backing came in!!! leave it acoustic! is there an acoustic version of this song? that's what I want

Where Do Broken Hearts Go: now here's a big loud stadium chorus. yes. I wish to be top row in some enormous basketball stadium and hear this beamed directly at my head with the force of 1000 fighter jets while a strobe light whites out my eyes.

18: here's my secret, cap... I don't like ballads. like sure it speeds up about halfway through but I just have to accept about myself that I don't like this type of pop music. it's slow it's lovey and I need about 15 more levels of loud bass for this to work. this is also why miss swift's folklore and evermore albums didn't work for me [don't throw tomatoes at me okay I TRIED TO LIKE IT AND I DON'T. I NEED LOUD GUITARS.]

Girl Almighty: YES A SONG I KNOW! I KNOW THIS ONE! MY FRIEND HAS A TATTOO ABOUT IT! I do think the "save a savior" line is silly but this song is so bouncy and delightful that I'll forgive it. also "let's have another toast to the girl almighty" is such a delightful lyric. I need to add this song to my skiing playlist. Banger. ✅

Fool's Gold: snnznnnnznznzzzzzzzzzz another slow song. ballad BANISHED (it's not a bad song I just achieve normal person levels of dopamine via fast music)

Night Changes: [points] look ma it's the song from the meme! does it ever drive you crazy just how fast the night changes! would you believe me if I told you this is the first time I've heard this song in its entirety? because it's true. it's not a bad song! not super to my taste, but I was willing to sit through the whole thing. I really enjoyed the vocals in this one.

No Control: I like the guitars here. I do NOT like the chorus, which is too bad. the verses are good. not a flop, but not a banger :(

Fireproof: at this point I think I'm beginning to experience 1D fatigue. their voices are all starting to blend together. pop overload. this song blends into the background. I feel like I'd hear this song at the state fair playing on some speakers. inoffensive. it smells like popcorn and deep fried oreos here. a vehicle from the dirt rally catches on fire. the speakers crackle. louis croons, unbothered.

Spaces: ballads BANISHED!!!!!! BEGONE

Stockholm Syndrome: I rather enjoy the "WHOA!!!!" noises in the chorus here. I fear the rest of it does not overly stick out to me. more perfectly innocuous pop music

Clouds: this song is sadly SUPER not for me ahaha. it's strange bc I think the bones are there but something about the production isn't for me. I feel like if the sound was rawer and it was produced in a more rockish sense it would absolutely bang. like, strip this down to ONE boy singing the chorus, make the singing a bit grittier, and fuck with the instrumentation a bit, and then we're in business

Change Your Ticket: christ this album is long. [it is at this moment that Bec realizes she selected the "Deluxe" version on spotify. "fuck," she says to herself. well, in for a penny, in for a pound.] I like this one. not in a "it's gonna make it onto my playlists" kinda way, but in a "oh yes this is a fun pop song" kinda way. 7.5/10, would bop around if this was played at a wedding reception.

Illusion: nooooooot for me

Once in a Lifetime: BALLADS B A N I S H E D. but also this song is about the pens core thanks.

Act My Age: ANOTHER SONG I KNOW! AND HAVE LISTENED TO FREQUENTLY! I ENJOY THIS SONG GREATLY. MY FAVORITE PART IS UNFORTUNATELY THE FIRST FIFTEEN SECONDS, WHICH I WISH TO LISTEN TO ON REPEAT. I COULD DO WITHOUT THE SINGING. I'M REALLY HERE FOR THE FIDDLE. FIDDLES4EVER. But also I really like the slower chorus breakdown here aha. I think it works very well, and then it slams so harshly back into that fiddle segment. ugh. so good. don't love the verses here but all is forgiven for the sake of the fiddle.

If you don't speak German, please be advised that the lyrics are very much NSWF 😂😂😂 do yourself a favor and look them up before you go around blasting it. (But don't let that stop you from blasting it. It deserves to be played at an 11.) I first heard this song on a crowded train from Munich to Vienna and was losing my fucking shit. I desperately tried translating it for my best friend, but I was laughing and vibing too hard.

Liked Songs: Pretty self-explanatory! I have 1,585 liked songs that I like to play on shuffle when I just want to listen to music.

Potterless: This is my favorite podcast and I heavily recommend it! It's a grown man who has never read or interacted with Harry Potter going through the series (and now fan-made materials) from a new perspective. I just love how he says things that I didn't notice or see as a child, and all proceeds during shows that talk about stuff made by Rowling get sent to different trans organizations. Right now I've been listening to him interview cast members of Puffs (which is also a really great show from the point of view of Hufflepuffs, it's on Amazon Prime!!)

life is a stage: This is my playlist with all my favorite broadway, themes, and soundtrack songs. It currently has 1,555 songs and counting!

Daily Mix 1: This mix made by Spotify for me is influenced by One Direction and Lorde, which is just the best mix.

1d: This is a playlist I made that has every One Direction and OT5 song ever made! It also has some podcast episodes of live performances that aren't on Spotify yet. When I want to daydream about the boys or plot a WIP, I usually turn to this playlist.

when you feel like peter pan: This is a playlist I made in honor of Louis Tomlinson. In the past I used to just name these playlists after their names, but then strangers started to follow them. 😬I have my own headcanon of songs (including Broadway songs, because a queer can dream) that I'd want to see Louis cover or just act in a music video into. bitty: loves his girl pop so he prefers little mix but he’ll listen to what makes you beautiful or one thing

shitty: casually enjoys their later music (four and made in the am) and will talk about the inherent misogyny that comes along with their popularity and marketing (don’t get him talking about simon cowell)

favorite: doesn’t pick one on principle (it’s niall)

lardo: i firmly believe that she had a one direction phase and ran a stan account for a while (no one will find it) i feel like her favorite song is home but i may be projecting

adam: get’s hyped to drag me down on a daily basis

ransom: a lot of their upbeat bangers on the kegster playlists but he doesn’t really listen to them regularly. he likes midnight memories tho!

ford: similar to tango but leans a little closer to the stan side of things. she lurks on stan twitter occasionally but doesn’t engage. she prefers their newer stuff but will listen to their older albums occasionally.

Midnight Memories

so fun fact I don't think I've ever actually listened to this album full through before this. I'm a bit of a fake 1d fan when it comes to their earlier stuff but my opinions are no less valid

the first song from this album I heard: I feel like it's "Story of My Life"

do I own the album?: I do not!

my favorite song: maybe???? "Happily"?????? i'll be honest I don't think I've listened to this album enough to have a definitive favorite but "Happily" is in my top 5. oh wait "Right Now" maybe.

my least favorite song: "Midnight Memories" probably

a song I didn’t like at first, but now do: "Little Black Dress" it's not that i disliked it or anything it's always been a bit of banger but now that Louis performs it at his shows it makes me happy. however the fade out still is not valid

a song I used to like, but now don’t: I haven't listened to this album enough to have a song like that

my favorite lyric: "My heart, your heart sit tight like bookends"

overall rating out of 10: mmmm solid 7.5/10. got some bangers got some high points. not quite up to an 8 though

Save Rock and Roll

one of my FAVORITE albums!!!!!! ever!!!!!! this album fundamentally changed me as a person

the first song from this album I heard: "My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark (Light 'Em Up)" we performed it for junior high glee. Everyone was excited that Fall Out Boy was back and i absolutely did not understand the hype. I didn't even know who fob was until i looked them up and figured out they did thnks fr th mmrs. Did not listen to this album until two years later

do I own the album?: Yes! on cd and vinyl

my favorite song: "Alone Together" hands down by far. arguably my favorite song of all time. it is not dramatic to say that without this song my life would be drastically different sometimes little things have big impact in roundabout ways I have thought about this a lot I have mapped where my life would be if I hadn't found this song

my least favorite song: i mean. honestly? full honesty? i don't know. none of them. but "Death Valley" is on the lower end of the spectrum

a song I didn’t like at first, but now do: "My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark (Light 'Em Up)" it's not even that I particularly love it but my love for the band has grown so exponentially and as such my love for this song has come a long way from when I was in 8th grade

a song I used to like, but now don’t: I feel like I used to like "Just One Yesterday" more than I do now. It's a great song I still love it but now it's a normal amount instead of a bonkers amount

my favorite lyric: "I don't know where you're going but do you have room for one more troubled soul"

overall rating out of 10: 10/10 baby!!!!!

a song I didn’t like at first, but now do: "Sunflower, Vol. 6" has grown on me a lot simply from exposure because I put it on my baked ziti playlist

overall rating out of 10: it's only a 6.5/10. Maybe even just a 6. I was kinda disappointed with it after loving hs1 so much but this one was a very different vibe and felt a lot more overproduced and superficial. I've only listened to it full through maybe 3 times since it came out, which tells you how much i vibed with it since i typically listen to albums when i listen to music

overall rating out of 10: 8/10. so here's the thing. they have some lyric/musical changes from the movie that I vehemently disagree with. if they hadn't gone from "I need space not just air" to "I need space and fresh air" or if they had kept all of the harmonies in "Carrying the Banner" or if they had ensured that Race said "A permanent box at Sheepshead races" since THAT'S WHERE HIS NAME COMES FROM AND MAKES SENSE WITH HIS CHARACTER then it'd be a 9. But they didn't do that. they had to go and mess up a good thing. so it's an 8 instead. wait you know what it's a 7.5 because "Letter from the Refuge" isn't on it.

u know what. i will give u all the lore u want. i’m 18, will be 19 decently soon so we are close to the same age. also the other band was r5. i have sent u asks about them and tde in the past. i followed you for atl content and got whiplash when u started posting about the first band i ever loved. i was like 10 when their first album dropped i have been around for entirely too long. i had a wattpad account and wrote r5 fanfic from the tender age of like 11-13. i discovered 5sos i don’t even remember how but i think the funniest part about it is that i never really got into their music?? i got into them as people by watching like interviews and compilations. and i mean at this point that was a While ago. SPEAKING OF FANFIC i did that like ao3 year in review thing like a month ago??? and you were my top author of the year so far. i read a lot of fic on ao3. your fics are very lovely and some of my favs. moving on. will not lie my music taste is kinda embarrassing and has barely changed since i was like 14 lmfao. been listening to a lot of waterparks lately. have been since their album dropped in may. i essentially go through phases of listening to solely one artist. or one playlist i made. most recently my taste has consisted of a lot of all time low, waterparks, paramore + hayley’s solo music (it really had to grow on me BUT now that it has it is very good), also been on a nostalgic r5 kick as well. hot take it has been quite difficult for me to get into tde’s music and i don’t really know why. some songs i absolutely adore (omg plz don’t come around is my fav by them. also scared of heights, feel you now, welcome to the end of your life are top songs too) but others i’m just. i have never liked preacher man and it’s the first song they released after they rebranded in like 2017. i love to see them finally free to do what they love music-wise but some of it is just. hard to listen to. i’m supposed to see them live in november (like 4 days before my birthday, kinda cool) and it’s the second time the show has been rescheduled so hopefully it happens. i’ve seen them live before but not since they rebranded. they’re dropping an album in october that i will have like a month to learn so it better be a fucking banger. now i’m just rambling about tde because i love ross and rocky with my entire being. rydel is annoying these days tho. also she named her baby fucking SUPER what kind of name is that why would you do that to a child. anyways. you ever need useless random r5 lore, i’m the person to ask. it’s the effect of being around to like a band for like 8 years. in conclusion my music taste? terrible. a cluster fuck. i will listen to luke’s solo album next time i’m focusing on a task because i like listening to new music when i’m concentrating on something. there’s some other bella lore for the day. - other bella

mm thats a good lineup of music to listen to!! paramore is another band i never got super into, i meant to and then i listened to all of riot and then i learned that hayley williams is like pretty christian and that a few paramore songs are more christian than i anticipated and now i'm like. on the fence about it all. but i wanna listen to after laughter i just havent gotten around to it yet. and i did like riot. i like paramore. i like dead horse by hayley, i didnt like the other single she released, and i didnt listen to her solo music because i didnt like the first single so im not sure if i would actually like it? i am accepting vibe checks in that category though i dont really know what kinda music it is. actually now that im thinking about it doesnt she have two albums now???? i feel like the answer is yes. anyway. moving on

that is very fair the thing abt the tde stuff is that it's all so interesting and so different from every other tde song like they really just do something unique in each song which i think is awesome but also makes it hard to like every song bc it's not like one universal vibe you kinda have to decide for each song if you're enjoying it or not. i do LOVEEEE tde though, im very jealous that you're seeing them perform. although i dont know why im not, just looked it up and theyre gonna be in new york on november 24th which is a sunday so i miiiight.....be able to go.......maybe...........their website says the 25th which is a monday so maybe i was under the impression the show was on a monday?? but the ticket site says sunday. 👀 we will just...have to see......what we see.............

legend by the score: i know i’ve said this before but the entire album “atlas” by the score was on my pump-up playlist that I listened to on bus rides to soccer games and debate tournaments so it still gets me really really amped up

🌿 Favorite comfort food: Mashed potato or cheese on toast. I’ve also been eating fig rolls too and find them v delicious.

🌼Favorite alcohol (or hot drink): Red wine and the kind of sweet, fizzy cider you drink in a long glass with ice, like Bulmers/Magners.

🌷Favorite relaxing activity: Lately I’ve been watching some livestream raves on Twitch, LOL. It’s weirdly relaxing and I can’t seem to focus on books or fic reading right now which is usually my go to. Listening to music in general is helping my brain quieten at the minute.

🌸Favorite fluffy/feel good fic: I always go back to older Snarry classics when I need a feel good fic in HP and in 1D/Nick fandom @magicalrocketships and @junkshop-disco are my go to authors. The stories I gravitate towards for feel good reads are not necessarily lighthearted or fluffy, but they’re very shippy and long and always ones I’ve read before where I know the ending is going to be feelsy and satisfying.

🌻Favorite calming scent: The air after rain. That, or coffee brewing, bread cooking etc. Not that I have any ingredients to bake bread as that’s on the UK stockpile list together with loo roll *eye-roll*

🌺Favorite relaxing or uplifting song: I made an LGBT party playlist for a quarantine night with people from the local community. It’s not public yet as I’m still fiddling around with it, but stuff like Britney and my self-isolation banger ‘I Think We’re Alone Now’ by Tiffany are on there. I’ll share it once I’ve made it public.

🌵Favorite white noise: Rain and the sound of the sea.

🍄Favorite book to get lost in: Eh, usually loads but I’m struggling to get lost in any reading atm. I’m planning to curl up with some Diana Wynn Jones at some point, so hopefully those will do the trick. I love her writing and stories.

💐Favorite chill out tv show: Documentaries are often my go to but I’ve mainly been re-watching old episodes of Brooklyn 99 and I love a British detective series to get lost in.

🌹The best advice you’ve ever had: Over the years various friends have given me tips to manage anxiety which have been very welcome now. At the minute taking advice to avoid too much news / social media has been good.

HAPPY 26th BIRTHDAY LIAM!!!

It's Mr Liam Payne's birthday and let's just have a moment to appreciate him before we move shall we? What a delightful man he is, a gift to us every day! For his birthday, we were given the treat of unseen footage, 30 minutes of charming unedited Liam promoting his very first solo single! Lovely. It's really delightful, though hearing him say, "we’ve just finished making the album" in July of 2017 is a sobering reminder that we have yet to get that LP. We also got to see him be showered with well wishes publicly by friends and the entire industry, and a bittersweet but lovely update from him: "I was well and truly spoilt today... what an incredible birthday... it’s been a tough few months but it’s amazing to see the people who pull you through to the other side and make you realise how amazing your life actually is." May this coming year be easier and bring lots of exciting things your way Liam!

But the news of the day was dominated by the predictable but still dramatic highs and lows of a Louis promo cycle. Kill My Mind will be out Sept 5! We got the official announcements with cover art, release date, pre-save URL, handwritten note to the mailing list, and a Louis announcement video (he's wearing a KMM color scheme matching shirt, amazing, fabulous, the attention to detail is, as always, incredible.) All platforms have been changed to KMM graphics, with Louis' twitter using a fan made header ("I saw it yesterday and thought it was cool!") that was adjusted to show her credit on it better, so sweet! Louis took to twitter to let fans know that he was listening to concerns ("I hear your frustration about opportunities for fans outside of the UK. It’s something I’m reminding management and the label of over and over again. You have my word that from here on in it will feel more inclusive!") and looking for ways to engage with fans ("I’m always trying to think of new ways to involve you all") which in retrospect looked to have possibly been related to things that happened later. It doesn't quite address the primary concerns of the day, but some feel that the line about him reminding the labels implies that he may not be making some of the less popular decisions himself. Jordan Green tells us KMM is his favorite Louis track to date and "a banger," Paul Higgins says he's so proud and can't wait to hear the track, and too many media outlets to report piled on in excitement; our boy is a big deal ya know!

And then the results of the video attendance contest (and yes, it is to be in the music video for KMM) were announced. That part was fine, and congratulations to the winning fans, but it's the other people who were invited who are ruffling feathers (by which I mean more like sending half the fandom into an incoherent rage). While 50 spots may indeed have been given out at random, the usual label crew were also issued invites, and were bragging about it long before the contest even closed. The preferential treatment rankles but the real issue is that it's these people specifically, who behave horribly to fans they interact with, many of whom have said awful things about Louis in the past publicly, and who when not invited places by the label use shady and unethical means to track the boys' locations during their private time so they can 'happen upon' them for encounters and pics. It can be upsetting to see these behaviors rewarded; if it helps, you can be comforted, or stressed, or whatever, by the knowledge that Louis knows very well what we thought of it all- a good hour or so after twitter exploded into a giant garbage fire of accusations and acrimony over this, he was still online, indicated by reply to a Dave Allen tweet.

Rolling Stone has added more Harry content: today a companion article to the cover story came out, also by Rob Sheffield, and a playlist. The article had the music quotes that were in the other piece plus more that weren't ("I think of all the great songwriters I love- but they all had their pop songs.....You have to conquer the fear of pop" stands out) and info about some of the bands featured on the very long and thorough playlist. Also on the playlist, some 1D! Olivia is on there as you would expect: Lilo written and strongly-associated-with-Louis faves No Control and Little Black Dress were a happy surprise though. Rob Sheffield tells us on twitter that Harry is a "superb courteous driver" and "literally the best parallel parker I've ever seen," all right calm the fuck down buddy or I'm gonna think you're protesting a little too much, and Hall and Oates reacted to the news that Harry had wanted them to play his 21st birthday but didn't try to hire them because he thought it would cost too much (??) by tweeting that they'd love to play his 30th. RS has also posted a tl:dr of the cover article which is possibly useful. Bet you wish I'd do those bitch me too! But it's hard!

Meanwhile, Niall posted a selfie and a video from the Omega Masters and liked Louis' KMM post.
