Heyo! Anyone want some Lin Fanart? :D
Here you go!
Tumblr media
I'd like to think this is right after Suyin hurt her and Lin may or may be blinded 👀💧
I'm not exactly good with expressions but I wanted to show Lin in both pain but also the anger and hate in her eyes.
All art belongs to me. If reposted plz credit!
Accidentally written a little one shot that's horrible. I meant to take a nap but just sat in my living room typing this and munching on food!
Enjoy- tho I doubt it'll be good 💀
Suyin would undoubtedly be upset she hurt her sister, but wouldn't be prepared to see this expression. An expression she's never seen on Lin before and is possibly ingrained in her mind forever.
Suyin would go to help Lin but Lin would refuse to let Suyin any closer and literally build a wall preventing Suyin from getting close.
Toph shows up and asking what happened, comforts Suyin upon feeling the little ones erratic heart beating all before Suyin tells her mother she's sorry and that Lin's hurt.
Toph goes to see what happens and all she hears is Lin barking at the healer to just do what they can and a slam of a door closing. Toph could sense something is wrong with Lin and can tell she'd faint at any moment if she don't step in only for Lin to hold her hand up at her mother and tells her, "Not now."
Before Toph could say anything Lin tosses her metal coils down on the ground and telling Toph that they'd need to be upgraded and that it's best for everyone in the facility to get them reworked.
Lin's face begins to swell up, the blood is trickling onto the ground and the healer helplessly following Lin around as she's barking orders but is starting to sway and almost faint.
Toph ends up freezing Lin in her place with her metal armor just to help the poor healer out and demands Lin to tell her what happened.
Lin straining too much and only just begins to fall to her knees as she can't fight against her mother in the state she's in, her heart aches, her face feels in agony and she feels ready to fall asleep.
The next thing she knows, she wakes up in a dimly lit room. She could smell the incense and the sandal wood and the light smell of spring in the air. She could hear yelling down the hallway between her aunt and mother, Suyin screaming that it was Lin's fault and of course the numbing pain on Lin's face.
She knew what happened and knew how bad the wound was. She didn't need a healer to tell her how bad the wound was because she felt it, could already sense her other senses strengthening.
With a sigh the metalbender slowly turned her head which made the blood in her head pump and practically caused her brain to ache as she tried to look out the window.
It took too long for Lin to focus and could see the sun had set a bit ago. She'd sit up and leave if she could but just the thought of it hurt Lin's head and she didn't want to go through that pain.
"We don't arrest family!!"
"And look what happened! Agni Toph, Lin got hurt and Suyin's in shambles! I'm not asking you to arrest Suyin I'm just asking you to help her. Ground her! She needs a mother Toph, not an absent one!"
"If I need any advice from you I'd ask! It's just a scratch, Beifong's don't get hurt!-"
"Mom?-"
"-And what do you know about raising kids Sugar Queen? Your two oldest couldn't wait to leave you and where are they now?!"
"-Aunt Katara?-"
"-That's not fair and you know it! They're grown up! Let them do as they and ex- you know what? Forget it! Since you're blind to see what's in front of you I'll tell you! Lin hates you and you don't know why! You're so concerned about your job, about your name, about your position, about metalbending that you forgot what's important!"
"And what's so important huh?!"
"That Lin is important too!"
The silence is what stung Lin the most. Maybe it was the hesitance or maybe the fact that her mother took a whole 10 seconds to finally respond. It was enough for Lin to realize her mother never saw Lin on any level of importance in a very long time.
"So what. She's a big girl, she doesn't need me. She didn't need me when she started tying her shoes, she don't need me now."
Lin sighed felt tears prickle in her eye before quietly crawling out of bed and out the window. She made her way down to the beach and sat down mauling over her aunt and mother's words.
Maybe her mother was right. Maybe Lin was the first to start pushing everyone away. Maybe she forgot what family was. It would make sense why her mother and younger sister were close and how she wasn't. Maybe Lin stopped being apart of the family once she realized she was nowhere near the same as them. When she was the one ruining their fun and becoming a "party pooper."
And even if that was true, even if it were very much apparent, it didn't hurt any less. People used to tell her how much her mother and her were alike. Nicknaming her Little Toph or Tiny Beifong. That she was going to be just like her mother and become a great metalbender.
She thought that since she looked like her mother, became an officer like her mother, bent the same stones as her mother, that she and her would share a bond. A bond that no one would understand but them.
It hurt her once Suyin was born, it was like Toph and her clicked right away and suddenly Lin wasn't Little Toph anymore. She became Miss cranky pants or miss you're-not-Suyin's-mom. She was no longer little Chief but an annoyance to her and her mother. A nag that ruined the fun.
The more people saw Suyin and Toph together the more they said Suyin was exactly like her. Rough, abrasive, strong, stubborn and a powerful metalbender.
A metalbender. Lin just realized why her mother favored Suyin over her. It was because Suyin was a great metalbender. Maybe that's why she loved Suyin more than her.
Lin ran her fingers through the coarse sand and stared up at the moon. Was she always this different? Was she ever in the spotlight to begin with? Lin didn't know but she knew she'd have to accept that she'll never be good enough. Even as she thought these things, Toph was probably taking care of Suyin because she was upset.
Maybe one day Lin would be a true Beifong and everything will be fixed. One day where she was just liked her mother and sister and they could be happy. One day where she didn't become a buzz kill.
Maybe one day she'll be a great metalbender that was worth her mother's time. She just hoped it was soon rather than later. She didn't want to be the only one left behind.

Who is Izumi’s Mom? Copium Edition
So we all know that Bryke have refused to confirm who Izumi’s mother is. Even when they released family trees, the conspicuously left Izumi’s mom blank.
Tumblr media
So incredibly frustrating!
So since Bryke insists on baiting us and not giving us closure, here’s a dose of copium for all shippers.
First off! Izumi’s name means “spring fountain”. Remember that.
Tumblr media
Secondly, she looks like this:
Tumblr media
REASONS WHY YOUR SHIP OF CHOICE COULD STILL MAKE SENSE!
Mai - She looks the most like Izumi. She canonically dated Zuko (until they broke up AGAIN). The former comics’ writer believes they will make up. She and Zuko have a history surrounding fountains. Even with all the drama, she remains the most likely candidate.
youtube
Katara - It should be self explanatory why a child named “fountain”, as in water, may be a reference to the one water bender Zuko dueled with most. The two of them clearly developed a connection by the end of the show, and Katara once even offered to heal Zuko’s scar. This one is all but debunked due to Kataang being canon, but it’s still nice to dream! And no one can deny they look great together.
youtube
Jin - Zuko and Jin shared lovely chemistry on their one date. Zuko was even willing to risk getting outed as a firebender in the Earth Kingdom and imprisoned, just to make her smile. This scene is also significant because it involved a fountain. Considering the bulk of Zuko’s redemption happened in the EK and the plot continued into the comics dealing with the blended FN/EK colonies, I can see why this would be a good thematic choice.
youtube
Toph - A rarer pair but one that one storyboard artist snuck in a reference for! Toph and Zuko have a lot in common. They both come from families of status that abused them for their failure to conform. Toph was born blind while Zuko has a disfiguring facial scar that realistically should affect both his vision and his hearing to an extent. Toph also has a friendship with uncle Iroh and was the first member of the Gaang to successfully understand and comfort Zuko as well as she did. Some point out that Zuko’s daughter Izumi has vision problems (like Toph) while Toph’s daughter Lin has a facial scar (like Zuko). The name Kanto, the alleged father of Lin, can also be written with the characters for “crown capital” so some speculate it’s an alias for Zuko. Spring fountain could be a reference both to the Earth element’s season of spring as well as to a volcano, which is like a fountain combining fire and earth. This scene is the most telling, with two doves representing Zuko and Toph. When Zuko walks away from Toph, the two doves kiss, signifying that perhaps a romance between them is destined for the future. Luckily, Toph knows how to listen and wait. Everything that applies to Jin about making peace with the EK applies even more to Toph since she’s actually from a noble house.
youtube
Suki - A bit of a wild card since she’s dating Sokka! But the comics showed Zuko and Suki getting much closer. When no one else was on Zuko’s side during the conflict in the colonies, and even Mai dumped him over his desperate visits to Ozai, Suki stayed by Zuko’s side. She never lost faith in him and tried her best to be there for him. The two have clearly developed a close friendship and bond of trust. Some even see it as romantic, which spells bad news for our boy Sokka. However, seeing as the book Legacy implies Sokka and Suki broke up, perhaps Zuki shippers have more evidence to stand on than originally thought! Everything that applies to Jin about making peace with the EK would also apply, since Suki is also from the EK. Perhaps she could fan the flames of his passion?
youtube
Sokka - Okay we all know it’s not going to happen but they’re really cute and I get it. The fountain claim applies to Sokka same as it does Katara! Hey there’s always a chance! Korrasami proved that!
youtube
Ty Lee - Not a lot to go off here but it’s undeniable that the two have a weird, unspoken tension. Why is Zuko quietly beefing with his sister’s bff? It’s never explained. Something is definitely going on there! We just don’t know what it is. In the comics, Zuko does lament not playing with Ty Lee and the other girls more as a kid.
youtube
Azula - I mean… okay I get it. The features that Izumi has in common with Mai, she also has in common with Zuko. So it’s not impossible to see why some would think she looks like Azula too. But can we please not make ATLA into Game of Thrones? This certainly isn’t helping:
youtube
Jet - He’s dead now so it’s not possible. But did Jet actually have a thing for Zuko? You know… it was really unclear.

Lin Beifong has no wins in Legend Of Korra
Tumblr media
Something that always bothered me in regards to the way this series treated the character of Lin was the fact that it never felt like any of Lin's victories actually gave the feeling of being victories.
Maybe it's because it's been years since I watched this show, and I'm being selective in what I choose to remember, and I'm just unintentioanlly choosing to remember the bad over the good... but it feels like this series just felt a lot more comfortable dunking on Lin than actually trying to raise her up... And that kinda annoys me a little.
Tumblr media
Lin is part of this character achetype that I like to call "The Antisocials", people who, because of personal events in their past, prefer to avoid or have trouble dealing with others. She's basically meant to be the "Zuko" of the team.
I really like this trope, and I really like to see the earth element getting some love, so I was really excited to see Lin getting her moments to shine and kick some ass in the series... Which... for some reason doesn't feel all that prevalent.
Tumblr media
Now, don't get me wrong, when Lin needs to fight, she WILL fight, and she looks cool while doing it... But when it comes to her more memorable moments, her getting defeated sadly feels more frequent than her getting some victories.
Like... Let's take a moment to count her Ls:
She got dumped by Tenzin after another woman seduced him
A terrorist started to attack her city and kept getting away from her
She was unable to stop her men from getting captured and losing their powers
Eventually she herelf got captured and lost her bending
She's constantly getting mocked and looked down upon by other characters
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Her own sister left a scar on her face while committing a crime and faced basically no consequences, only to years later have a life filled with success while Lin is all alone
Her own mother acts like she couldn't care less about her struggles
Neither of the two ever gave Lin a proper apology and instead just tried to pull an Mirabel from "Encanto" and tell her to get over it
She basically played no role in all of season 2
And when she tired to face her family about her problems she was simply treated as the one in the wrong
Now let's count her "wins:"
She allowed Tenzin's family to get away from Amon in season 1... At the cost of her getting captured... Only for the family itself to get caught later anyway
She saved Korra from falling, which allowed Amon to get away with her men
In season 3 she gets clobbered by the combustion woman so her sister can land the finishing blow
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and In season 4 she tries to rescue her family, only to nearly fail and needing to be saved by her mother, who proceeds to give her the most bare-bones of moments of reconciliation, because God forbid we let our fan-favorite character from the first series show a little humility for her own daughter in her moment of weakness
Tumblr media
It just felt like the show was afraid of ever letting Lin be a badass and giving her a real win moment.
It doesn't even need to be a battle win. She could have had a moment with Korra where she teaches her some life lesson, or teach her how to metal bend and listen to the earth, or she could have had some scenes where her actions save the day, like, how come she never gets to save her sister and mother but both of them end up saving her? Or even some character moments like her bonding with Mako, or Tenzin's kids or something... I don't think she even really interacts with anyone in a meaningfull way.
If you were to ask me who her best friend in the series was, I would have no idea what to say.
Tumblr media
Her biggest "win" in the series was getting to wake up all happy after "solving" her personal demons, an act she achieved by... fighting her sister and venting out all her anger, I guess.
I don't know if it's just me but Lin's victories on the show all feel so shallow, as if they were telling us she was achieving things instead of actually feeling like she was. At times, she felt like the show's punching bag. Insted of being the Zuko of the story, she came more as the Squidward.
Tumblr media
Someone who's there just to lose to the villains and make them look strong and making other characters look cool while they save her with her big lesson being that she needs to learn to be less grumpy.
Lin should be so easy to make cool! Like, you see her design, her powers and abilities, her personality, her verstility for several different types of action scenes and versatility for also different interactions with the rest of the cast...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
But instead it felt like they were throwing darts at a wall trying to pick a different way to dunk on her every time, as if they were afraid of makiing her too cool.
I don't know, maybe I'm just being salty and petty because I wish more had been done with her and that's causing me to only focus on the negatives, making them look and sound a lot worse than they actually were, while also ignoring all the big positives about her time on the screen...
But sometimes it felt to me like the show was more interested in hyping up everyone else and giving them a moment to shine over Lin.
Like, again, her own sister got to take down one of the big members of the Red Lotus, and she basically becomes one of the main characters in season 4, while Toph gets to train and help heal Korra.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
These two got to look so much cooler in just two seasons than Lin got to look in all 4, and I can't even fully enjoy them being cool because all I keep thinking when I look at them is "You two did Lin dirty."
If they had had an actual honest earned moment of reconciliation, I feel like I would be in heaven watching both of them kicking ass, cause again, I love the earth element, but instead I would just be "God, I wish this was Lin doing all this cool stuff instead."
I'm not exactly sure what the mindset was behind the way they wanted to handle her, not sure if there was studio interference, or mismanagement, or if Nickelodeon's meddling affected things, or what...
I'm just trying to say, I feel like Lin deserved better. I still like her character a lot but I can't help but feel even more could have been done with her.

I Physically Can’t Get This Idea Out of My Head
How many people actually know Lin got her scars from Su ? I was rewatching the Zafou episodes and I don’t think Lin ever explicitly mentioned Su giving her the scars. So none of the krew knows. So I get why her anger doesn’t look justified to them and why they would pressure her to make up without that context. But I so badly want them to discover it. I want to see their reactions . I want them to see photos of Lin before she was scarred. How would their perceptions of Su and Lin change ? Would they be more empathetic towards Lin ?
Additionally I don’t think Su’s kids know the truth. Opal really loves her aunt I imagine she would be quite angry if she found out and while Lin’s bond with her nephews isn’t explored in the show ( which it should’ve been I want to see her play power disk with Wei and Wing, and praise Huan’s art and have a heart to heart with Baatar) I think they’re also attached to her and would be upset.
Further how about the air kids, Lin seems quite close to them and they’re all very curious. They’ve probably asked her several times before. Did she lie to them to protect her sister ? Does she give up and tell the truth one day ?
How about Kya, Bumi and Izumi ? Were any of them actually there when it all went down ? Did she tell them ? ( I don’t think she would it seems painful for her to talk about ) How would they react to the truth thirty years later?
Also I think Toph has the capacity for empathy. I think she’s ignorant to the full extent of Lin’s injury and that’s why she was so apathetic about it and just wants to move on. She’s blind. She never saw the bandages or saw how deep the scars ran, how large they were but if she did would she have acted differently? I think so. Sure she’s neglectful but she’s not a monster. If she actually felt the scars I think she would’ve comforted her daughter. She would’ve been more mad at Su. In her eyes Lin has a little scratch and Su was an accomplice in a crime. So if course she thinks Lin is overreacting. In her eyes sending Su away for being an accomplice is a crime is proportional to the harm done. She thinks Lin’s anger is just her being a square and normal sibling bickering. If she knew the whole truth maybe she would’ve punished Su more and made her make it up to Lin somehow.
( does she even know that Lin has a scar afterwards? Does anyone mention them in front of her ?)
and Lin would never let anyone touch her scars ever so how is Toph supposed to understand? How can she without feeling them ?
More thoughts about Toph: Raising both of the girls while being blind must’ve been difficult. Think about it she can’t see if their clothes get stained, can’t see if they have a bruise or see if they’re crying. So much of communication and understanding is nonverbal. She misses out on so many social cues and so much visual information. On top of being blind both her and Lin dislike physical affection. So all they really have left is verbal communication and both of them are too emotionally stunted and prone to bottling things up to ever say what they need to. Let’s be honest Toph isn’t a great listener either so she probably doesn’t fully realize/respond to what Lin is trying to say. Lin may be better at writing out or drawing her emotions but Toph wouldn’t be able to read what she wrote or see her visual work. Lin would have to learn braille and sit down and write in it to get her mother to understand which I honestly don’t believe she has the patience or desire to do. Nor do I believe Toph has the patience or desire to sit down and read all of that. ( Does Toph know braille ?) They can’t communicate with each other properly. There are so many barriers. Of course their relationship is strained. While it may not be wholly Toph’s fault it has produced a huge impact on both of her daughters that none of them can address.
An epiphany : LIN IS A SILENT CRIER. She doesn’t sob. Are you following me? Rewatch the Zafou episode if you don’t believe me . Nonverbal - audio communication ( I don’t know if there’s an actual word for this) doesn’t happen between them. Lin isn’t vocally expressive. She doesn’t cry out loud or scream or make any other vocalizations when she is in physical or emotional pain. She may grunt in some of the fight scenes but she isn’t loud. Think about when she got her bending taken. Probably one of the most physically and emotionally painful moments of her entire life. In that scene she didn’t make a single sound. Or the reverse she got her bending restored a huge moment of relief she didn’t laugh or make any other sounds of joy. She just thanked Korra. Lin is silent . Toph can’t hear her.
In conclusion communication is everything and everyone of them needs therapy.

Hi 👋🙂
I saw that you're taking requests and that you write for Tomas. There just isn't enough of him on this site and I am down BAD for this Smokey Bear ❤️. Could you maybe write about him having a partner who doesn't know how to fight so he teaches her some basic moves? Could go a bit NSFW if you feel it, could be fem or GN reader. Obviously feel free to ignore too!
Tomas Teaching Reader How To Fight (18+)
Warnings: NSFW after a certain point! Minors leave or I'm calling Liu Kang to reset your timeline. The NSFW will be marked with -----. The HCs switch to more oneshot style writing once it reaches the NSFW section. Reader is loosely described as just being smaller than Tomas and is female!
Hello Anon! You're so right, Tomas needs more love. I will feed the Tomas tag as much as your heart desires.
▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎
• Tomas definitely asked you if you knew how to fight
• He was all for protecting you, he loved the thought of it
• Though he wasn't naive enough to think he would always be there to do so
• One thing led to another, and you had set up your own training schedule
• It was flexible, working off of Tomas' own schedule, and depending on how much you were feeling it
• He wouldn't push you to pick up some rough and tumble training regiment, he wanted you to be comfortable
• But he also wanted you to be safe
• Tomas would start out very simple, punches and kicks, blocks and dodges
• You may have asked to learn how to use the karambit like he had, but he turned that offer down
▪︎ "Basics first, then, we can talk about you learning the karambit."
• You were excited to spend more time with Tomas either way, so you were pleased
• As agile and strong as he was, you could tell Tomas was slowing down a lot to help you understand
• Allowing you to see the form, to see how his body curves, and to replicate it yourself
• Ask questions, he will break it down as much as you need him to
• He's quite happy to, actually
• It's about two months of learning the basics at a consistent rate before you start to do anything together
• Of course, he would let you practice on him, but this was a little different
• From now on, you would add some grappling to your training
• What good was knowing the basics if the moment the opponent got you to the ground, you had no idea what to do?
• The first few lessons were simply you watching while Tomas broke it down with another ninja of the Lin Kuei
• Going from showing you what it would be like at more fast speeds, before slowing it down so you could actually see what the hell he was doing
• It excited you to think of getting to learn how to get out of tricky situations
• Also the thought of eventually learning how to flip Tomas was an entertaining one
------(NSFW content: dry humping, almost getting caught)-----
• Though you couldn't say you expected to notice how...different it was to actually be the one performing the different escape techniques
• Watching was one thing, but you wouldn't deny that you could barely focus when it was you participating
• Tomas was saying something
• Definitely important with how his hands were moving as he talked, probably running through the motions
• All you could focus on was the feeling of his thighs on either side of your waist
• The way he seemed so much bigger than he already was from this angle
▪︎ "Are you listening?"
Bringing your gaze back up to Tomas', you felt your face grow hot at being caught. He seemed amused but also a little shy at your shameless staring, either way he didn't make any comments on it. "Yes, I'm listening." You stated, your hands resting on his thighs as you tried to focus back in on the lesson at hand. Though really, you just focused in on his face the moment he had finished explaining what you had to do to escape from him. The scar that ran over his left eye, the one that ran across his forehead, the most prominent beauty mark that resided just a bit above his lips. It almost felt like they were begging for your own lips to press against them. Which you had before, multiple times, in scenarios not too different from this.
Slightly adjusting his sitting, Tomas brought one hand down to press against your neck, reaching down to his belt, he pulled out a karambit. "Don't worry, this one is dull." He stated, before positioning his hand as if ready to attack you with it. You swallowed thickly, tongue briefly darting out to wet your lips, and you didn't miss the way his eyes followed the motion. "Try to escape." The slight strain in Tomas' voice almost made you grin, though instead, you decided you should probably actually try your best. You'd been learning this, hands on, for a week, and you'd always fallen short. Needing him to go easy on you so you could successfully get him off.
You didn't want that this time though. You wanted to show him how much you've trained on your own time. Planting your feet, the moment he began to flex his arm to bring it in for a slash, you drove your knee up into his back. He fell forward, letting out a grunt at the force of it, his hand landing beside your head. Keeping your foot braced on your other leg, you restricted him the best you could from being able to sit back up. Bringing your hands in to bend and push down the arm of the hand that was on your neck, you kept your hands secured around it. Then came the hardest part, Tomas wasn't holding his weight up, keeping you pinned moreso with that than anything else, so you struggled to displace him enough to flip him off of you.
You kept his arm in place so he couldn't disengage, breaking away your leg positioning quick enough so you could hook your leg over his and try to swipe his foot inward. At first, he simply readjusted his foot, and he began to pull your body up with his as he got the opportunity to sit back up. You huffed, and swiped at his foot harder, causing it to slip and shift his bodyweight to one side. Using that to your advantage, you used all the strength you had left to push him over. You felt excitement rush through your veins when his back hit the mat with a thud, letting out an excited exclamation and completely forgetting you hadn't truly gotten away from him yet.
"You didn't have to go easy o-" His hand that you had released came up to grab your arm and pull you back down onto him, but instead of being met with further trial, you were met with a kiss. Despite all the built up energy, his lips against yours was soft, the kiss passionate. You relaxed against his hold, eyes closing as you brought your arms down to wrap around his shoulders. When he pulled away, you were left breathless, and when your eyes opened, you were met with a look of pure adoration. You smiled, "Was that my reward?"
Tomas laughed, pulling your body up with ease to assist with you both untangling your legs from the awkward position you had ended in. "You almost sound disappointed." He grinned, putting down the dull karambit he had been holding, sliding it aside so he could have you in both his arms. Straddling his waist, you didn't fail to feel the press of his erection against you. Taking a gamble, you pulled your hips up before slowly pushing them back down, grinding against him. A shaky breath fell from Tomas' lips, and you felt pleased feeling his hands press against your back, trying to pull you closer.
"Not disappointed..never disappointed." You brought your hands forward to cup his face, pressing your lips to his as you began to cant your hips at a more steady pace. Your shared moans were muffled by the kiss, to be briefly heard by the both of your ears and your ears only. You had almost forgotten you were in the training room, almost.
The first to hear the sound of approaching footsteps and the voices of a small group, Tomas pulled away quickly. At first, you were confused, thinking you had done too much in a space like this, then you noticed the wide eyed glance Tomas sent towards the closed doors. You had quickly stood up, then, working to adjust your ruffled clothes and just hoped whoever came in wouldn't have an inkling of an idea as to what had happened. Tomas mimicked your behavior, wiping his sleeve over his mouth to rid the lingering glisten of saliva, adjusting his clothes because now you had him almost painfully hard.
Door sliding open, you were greeted with a few Lin Kuei, stretching their arms as they prepared to practice for the day. "Tomas." They bowed to him as they walked passed, grabbing training weapons of their choice. Tomas nodded his head, bending down to pick up the karambit he had slid aside and place it back on the weapons table. You decided to make your departure quick, lips pursed and trying not to laugh at the struggle of your boyfriend. Tomas was not far behind you, letting out a relieved sigh once out of the suddenly suffocating practice room.
  "I'm sorry, I didn't expect us-"
"Don't worry about it, you did good today."
You smiled at his kindness, and gently nudged his arm with your shoulder, "We can stop by your room for a bit..can't we?"

Been thinking about this for a while but Suyin and Lin's feud was so weirdly structured. So the entire narrative of that arc was that Lin was being unreasonable and bitter for holding onto her grudge against Suyin.
But all the flashbacks we se ethat episode seem to want us to sympathise with Lin. We see her and Suyin argue and then we see her get her scar due to Suyin's actions. We only ever see Lin's POV of her past with her sister.
If they wanted us to sympathise with Suyin, why not show us more of her POV. We clearly see that Suyin wasn't the only one who bore animosity in that relationship. When we first see them in the flashbacks, Suyin seems almost good-natured, trying to crack a joke.
Sure, we can extrapolate from what little we're given that:
Suyin is of the mind that her mother doesn't care for her and her sister doesn't seem to give her much affection either.
She tries to fill the void with friendship, however her friends are deliquents. Still, Su stays with them because they're probably the closest she has to affection. It's clearly a sore spot, we see her blow up at Lin when Lin calls said friends 'losers'
To maintain her friendship, Suyin assists them with a robbery. She appears to have tried to have had as little with the crime as possible, insisting that : I didn't steal anything. I just drove the car.
However, none of this is stated outwardly. We only see Lin's perspective of these interactions. Which, to people less willing to be charitable, makes it so much easier to villify Su as a bratty kid who commited crimes for the hell of it. Even with Lin's scarring, which was obviously an accident, we only get a short closeup of Suyin's horrified expression.
Tumblr media
This plotpoint should've been explored more deeply too, I think. We never get a resolution to the scar thing, which should be a huge deal.
However, despite most of the flashbacks painting Suyin in a horrible lighting, the narrative of the episodes around it was that Lin should forgive and forget.
It's weird. And it feels like the writers weren't communicating properly, or that there was some sort of meddling going on. Or maybe the episode was just poorly written.
Anyway, it's not fair to either sister. Lin is forced by the narrative to bury the hatchet way too soon, while Suyin quickly becomes hated by the fandom due to her portrayal and the subsequent sweeping of her faults under the rug.
I think the Beifongs should've had their own season, one that would focus on them deeply. B4 would've been the perfect place for that, what with Kuvira and Baatar Jr being the main villains. It would be easy to place this beautifully fucked up family front and centre.
Oh, well. Anyway. The structuring of these few episodes, particularly 'Old wounds' was very weird.

sooo I’m insane about mako right. well. well ho hum well do you remember the other ball of repressed rage firebending member of team avatar.
yeah so imagine the timeline gets switched up a bit. aang (sorry aang ily but it’s for the plot) dies a lot earlier so the gaang is all in their early thirties late twenties when the krew start to be born. none of the major plot events are going to really change (gaang will be atla white lotus age by canon, almost 60s) and rc has for the most part been established.
boom around ten-fifteen years later they’re all around fourties. the krew is in the ten-fifteen y/o age range—korra’s training in the compound, asami is being groomed into a businessgirl, but yk what that means for my favorite bending brothers? the streets.
the gaang minus aang are still active and about (sokka is alive Because) so it’s zuko’s turn to help toph run the underbelly of rc. she always gripes that she’s doing fine in her old age (she’s like,, 38) and they can just leave her alone with the damned city to rot (she mostly hates her job. only reason she sticks with it is because it’s a sort of backwards way to take care of su and lin*. if the city streets are safe, there’s no reason not to let them off free) but of course the gaang has a rotation anyway. they try to stay sort of in contact after ending a hundred year war together because that’s kind of big.
*by the way sokka is not their dad. they were made in a terrarium because toph Built kids out of boredom and aang gave them bending as a joke and they just. grew. became alive. idk it seems more in character than toph having kids the normal way.
so anyway zuko is out patrolling. he’s on gang-spotting duty, so basically toph has the aging fire lord running around after guys who graffiti gang signs on walls and Politely Asking where their hideout is. today he happens to stumble upon an inter-gang scuffle. it’s pretty typical, and he’s moving to stop it when—boom, lightning and screaming. now, it was mostly thanks to his (and a reformed azula, because she will be getting in here somehow) efforts that lightningbending masters took hold and spread the subbending more commonly, but it’s still not typical to see it in poorer areas. yet there’s one person with a gang rumored to have it—you guessed it, zolt!
so zuko goes chasing after the source of the lightning, thinking toph is gonna be so happy she won’t punch him for a week and keep her griping to a minimum once he brings in one of the biggest thorns on her side.
but it’s not zolt he’s chasing. it’s twelve year old mako, scared shitless that the firelord is chasing him down and nowhere near fast enough to outrun him or hide. none of zolt’s cronies are dumb enough to try and bail him, he knows, but he also doesn’t want to leave bolin waiting on a dead brother.
zuko catches him, baffled that ‘zolt’ is so small. mako says nasty shit (because in best impression of 12 y/o mako voice : royalty. You are the 1% that makes Us like this) trying to wriggle free, revealing himself as definitely not zolt.
Zuko stares at this grimy, angry little twelve year old with old, peeling burn scars (I’ll make a post soon about the scars he definitely has from like,, everything) and fresher lightning scars and is like,, hmm. tiny angry firebending child with scars and likely insurmountable levels of trauma=me as a child who just needed some guidance and turned out fine (not really but it’s the thought that counts)
and then he uses his brain really hard and decides he will give tiny angry firebending child with scars and likely insurmountable levels of trauma guidance. so mako gets picked up by the scruff and is dragged, kicking and screaming, by the firelord to the police station.
toph hears a child shrieking and is immediately like no. get it away. out of my police station NOW. and mako is like YES get me out of her police station NOW. and they have a moment of commiserating mako’s presence in the police station together.
but then zuko is like what if we gave him Guidance. toph says bring that bullshit to katara and gtfo. cue lin and su, annoyed teenagers/young adults around canon krew’s ages for highest potential siblingism. btw the beifong relationships are much better in this. su is immediately like. can we keep him mom please. lin agrees with toph and wants it OUT she just started working here and tenzin’s yapping about kids does not need to follow her to the bullpen.
mako is put into police custody (su drags him around with her and watches him overnight). he wheedles her into finding bolin and becomes much more agreeable when he has his brother to hold in a death grip. when asked to separate, he threatens multiple creative methods of murder.
this got really out of hand but the idea is that katara and sokka side with zuko and they all gang up on toph, who somehow caves and agrees to let zuko give Guidance to tiny angry firebending child with scars and likely insurmountable levels of trauma. she forces bolin on suyin but she doesn’t mind too much, shoving metalbending down his throat.
korra meets them earlier on, finally having some friends her age! they’re all really really weird though so none of them are well adjusted when korra finally runs away to rc (they follow her everywhere). how terrible. but mako and bolin are like 5000x stronger without even trying and they also have money.
all three teenage freaks meet asami (who is immediately endeared by their weird asses), shit goes down, but this time featuring nebulously-father zuko, favorite person-without-title-but-probably-scary-aunt azula definitely mom-adjacent katara, weirduncle sokka, toph who goes to the swamp whenever she wants because lin is basically chief of police already and big sisters lin, su, kya and izumi. also featuring cousin-ish iroh II and long distance/reluctant (respectively) older brothers bumi and tenzin.
I believe both mako and bolin, if possible, would be considerably more batshit insane considering who they were raised by, but also more calculated on mako’s part because azula absolutely got her time in with him. I think katara would’ve taught them, for an absolute worst case scenario, how to handle bloodbending, so they would’ve wiped amon. I think mako, considering azula, definitely wanted the kill with that lightning on amon but, considering azula, knew it would only turn him into a martyr for the equalists to rally behind without exposing him first.
also puppy love makorra in the compound. then korrasami in rc because pretty girl with a bike but then ‘sorry I kind of have a crush on your childhood best friend korra but I’m still in love with you’ ‘WOAH sick really? same lol.’ ‘we should all kiss.’ then makorrasami!!!!
so yeah I totally lost my train of thought but that’s like. generally it(?)

i don't think we acknowledge this enough when it comes to legend of korra s3 but Lin was MORE than justified in cutting off Su. like her history PERMANENTLY scarred her face for the rest of her life and their mother just brushed it under the rug and not to mention how Su plays dirty in arguments like bringing up her and Tenzins breakup which was most definitely a really sore subject just so she could get her sister to be emotional
tldr: Lin is the greatest character ever and i love her dearly

some headcanons of our favorite family bc i dont wanna sleep snd im procrastinating on my homework:
Lin is a hugger so she'll just randomly go to her wife and pull her into a hug
on the other hand, Izumi is a kisser and she will take ANY chance she gets to kiss her wife
Izumi hovers the covers and sometimes the pillows. Lin doesn't really mind
IZUMI IS THE FAMILYS DRAMA QUEEN and the firekids are just slightly less dramatic
Ursa and Iroh are excellent liars but the only person they cant lie to is izumi (its not that they try and fail they just dont do it.)
Iroh keeps more contact with Zuko than with his mom. he'll recieve a call from or call his grandpa daily while he talks to his mom once or twice a week
when Iroh was like 10 he once casually asked Lin if he could go with her when she was talking about a trip to Gaoling. they went and it meant the absolute world for her
(where Lins scar goes up to her eye) Izumi is the only one that can stand on her blind side, with anyone else she'll switch sides so she can see them
when she turns 20, word starts spreading around that Ursa is getting pressured to get married, so she starts getting presents of all sorts and being wooed by young men from powerful families trying to get to the royal family, so at events she has her moms protecting her and scaring them away
Lin is more reactive and angry while Izumi is more patient and stoic (im pretty sure this is canon)
Iroh is the king of plants bc he used to spend most of his time with his mom in the garden and she taught him all about it
sometimes Ursa got so sick as a kid that she didn't want anyone to care for her more than Izumi or Lin. they sometimes thought of it as quite the incontinent and tried to get rid of that habit, so she stopped, until she got very injured as an adult, and she was half conscious, and she kept asking for her mom. that's when they realized how much they actually missed caring for her

Story of Kunning Palace Ep. 18: Observing you observing me
When you've always seen yourself as the villain, is it harder to accept kindness or accept that others see kindness within you?
Hands down my favorite parts of Episode 18 were these two back-to-back scenes with You Fangyin, Jiang Xuening, and Xie Wei. For our two deeply scarred leads, the ability to find someone who truly sees them for who they are and what they could be feels unattainable, and yet in this episode they both find that.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The day after being attacked by a delirious Xie Wei, Xuening goes to visit You Fangyin in prison. Feeling guilty about not being able to stop Yan Lin from being exiled, Xuening also expresses guilt about keeping Fangyin in "another prison" to protect her from her family. Like Xie Wei with Yan Lin, she believes her scheming has shackled Fangyin to an even worse fate.
But Fangyin just smiles and gently corrects her, arguing that Xuening has actually made her life better. She also notes that while "death is the end of everyone's life, the process could have thousands of possibilities." The conversation is a good reminder for Xuening that not only is Yan Lin's disastrous fate not locked into place, but also that perhaps Xie Wei's actions, like her own towards Fangyin, might not be as nefarious as she had originally assumed.
Tumblr media
I think that's why when Xie Wei confronts her outside the prison, she's angry but it's more from feeling betrayed than anything else.
Side Note #1: This woman though. Xuening literally saw Xie Wei murder a man and almost gets stabbed/strangled herself, but she's more upset that he kept his plan to protect Yan Lin a secret from her. She might idolize and be attracted to Zhang Zhe's virtuousness but she and Xie Wei are two peas in a pod when it comes to embracing the idea that sometimes the ends justify the (bloody) means.
Side Note #2: I love how Xie Wei is wary enough of Xuening's reaction that he keeps his distance but the moment his guard, Qing Feng, starts criticizing her he moves to her side.
Side Note #3: Zhang Linghe's profile is magnificent. That jawline is sharper than the dagger Xie Wei used to kill Gongyi Cheng.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Xie Wei is an excellent people reader, and when she accepts his invitation back to his home, he knows she's angry. So it takes him aback when she extends a bit of kindness despite that.
The beginning of this scene has such lovely subtle acting by Zhang Linghe. Xuening sees Xie Wei struggle with setting down the qin because of his injured hand so she reaches over and gently places it on the table for him. That cautious lift of Xie Wei's head and the wonderous look on his face like he can't believe she'd offer care after witnessing his violence...that broke me. It says so much about his character and the low expectations he has for the people around him to care.
Tumblr media
But when it comes to Xuening, Xie Wei doesn't want her to have those same low expectations of him. He tells her not to trust him, that he's not a good person, and yet he
Risked his life to take pills that would treat his delirium enough that he could approach her the morning after he attacked her;
Is willing to risk his revenge plan by explaining parts of his strategy to someone with links to the Ministry of Justice just so that she doesn't turn away from him;
Gets visibly frustrated when she assumes he just wants to shut her up about the murder rather than explain about Yan Li.
And he tucks it away in his heart that she admits to observing him like he observes her. Although his identity is an illusion, it is enough for him that he is an illusion she truly sees and can be kind to.
Tumblr media
Look at that boyish smile.
How she is so oblivious about his feelings at this point is beyond me but Minister of Justice and Cheekbones is pretty distracting so I guess I get it.

Just Thinking
With everything Lin’s been through I’m surprised she never had an Azula-esque mental breakdown.
This woman had an absent father, a neglectful mother, basically had to raise her sister because Toph wouldn’t then got her face sliced open by said sister. Her sister leaves after that and then her mom leaves about (guessing here) a year or so afterwords and just hangs out in a swamp. She joins the police to impress her mother and goes on to become the chief and her mom still doesn’t care.
Her job is immensely stressful, her friends are across the world ( Izumi is in the fire nation, Kya is traveling, Bumi is in the UF) and she gets left by Tenzin (who she’s probably known and been friends with since infancy) for a younger woman.
Presumably there would also be the pressure of the Beifong name and title and the maintenance of the estate after her grandparents die because I don’t see Toph handling that. Additionally all of her mentors either die or move away from the city (Aang dies, Sokka dies, Zuko is in the fire nation, Katara moves to the south) . Obviously we know from the show she handles her emotions poorly and bottles them up. We also know that she’s kind of socially-awkward at times like Azula.
Then we get into the issues of each season. RC already has organized crime that she has to fight to take down then the avatar lands on her door step and destroys public property and agitates the equalist situation. Then Lin looses her job which she has dedicated her entire life to. Outside of her job she doesn’t have a lot going for her. Then she sacrifices herself to save the family of the guy that cheated on her and looses her bending in the process. That must be soul crushing and no one shows up to save her or support her in her time of need.
Season two she has to deal with the attacks in RC and deal with her detective being falsely accused and then with the spirit vines overtaking her city.
Season Three she has to protect the avatar from a terrorist group and is forced to see her sister after thirty years. This experience is obviously super overwhelming for her and then she’s pressured into meeting all these new people (our girl is an introvert). Additionally the stress of her job is physically taking a toll on her as seen throughout the episode. She goes to get acupuncture which resurfaces all of her old painful memories and then when she has an outburst ( understandable she’s going through a lot) everyone is mad at her. ( I have so much more to say about this but I don’t want this post to be a novel) . The battle with the Red Lotus: she was nearly killed and she watched P’Li die. that had to be gory. Even if Lin has seen a lot of death that’s a VERY gruesome way to go.
Season four is obviously stressful for her but there’s particular instances that stick out here: Toph hiding who her dad was just to go and tell Bolin ( this must’ve been so immensely hurtful for Lin: think about it she didn’t even know her dad was from the fire nation until her mom casually told Bolin, that means Lin went fifty four years not even knowing her ethnicity ) . But also the way that after everything Toph’s done she’s just expected to forgive her ? And Lin is so incredibly self-sacrificing that she just swallows her own feelings and does.
Here are the things that really irk me the most
Circling back to season three: “Bitter loner who only cares about herself. No wonder Tenzin ended things with you years ago”
Wow, just wow this is so genuinely awful. But also untrue. Lin has made so many sacrifices, she’s put her life on the line multiple times for Korra and had her bending ripped away from her while protecting Korra.
Bringing up Tenzin was a low blow and so immature of Su.
Lin is so forgiving and no one appreciates her or acknowledges the tremendous amount of pain they put her in.
Also Lin has massive scars on her face. She has to see those every day. That has to take a toll on her self esteem. Not only that they look painful and deep. For all we know she could have sensitivity or be completely numb in that area.
This pisses me off the most: Toph could feel everything through the vines apparently so that means she knew when Lin lost her bending but she didn’t show up for her. Realizing this broke my heart for Lin.
In conclusion Lin has been through a lot. She is traumatized. Yeah she’s grumpy and she has outbursts and she cries in the Zafou episodes but none of this feels like a proportional response to everything she’s been through . I don’t think she as a character can heal until she really processes things and lets it all out but all we see is her continuing to work and heap more pressure on herself. That isn’t sustainable and eventually will create consequences much worse than what we’ve already seen.
I see parallels between her and Azula ( I won’t get into it) and with the strained relationship Lin has with Toph I could see her having an Azula-moment.
youtube
Thanks for listening to my disorganized thoughts .

Magic!ANON Lin Beifong has been turned into a toddler and Tenzin has to watch her until she can be turned back.
Their arrival on Air Temple Island was heard before it was seen. Tenzin landed from his glider and marched right up to the officer, anger evident in his voice as he shouted over the screaming little girl that Saikhan dragged along with him.
"What are you doing to that child!?"
A young girl of about four or five years old screamed in frustration as she struggled to free herself from the grip that Saikhan had on her arm. "Big fat ugly meanie! Let me go!" She shouted as she used the whole weight of her body to try and pull away.
"Tenzin, something shot out of the spirit portal and went right through Beifong. This is her." He gestured to the child who was now stomping on his feet and biting at the metal of his uniform. "It was incredible. About eight of us saw her shrink down, and this is all that was left over."
"What?!"
Tenzin leaned down to get a better look at the girl and saw her dark hair and familiar pale green eyes. "Lin?"
She growled at him sent some nearby fist-sized rocks flying at his face. He easily ducked under them, their movements too slow to be a threat. Apparently her bending prowess had diminished as well as her age.
"Korra and Jinora are already helping us try to figure out how to fix this, but Tenzin..." he hesitated.
The airbending master stood fully. "Out with it, Saikhan."
"We can't keep her at the station any longer. She's already figured out the basics of metalbending, and she's wreaking havoc on the unit's concentration to figure this out. I can't trust any old daycare to take her, she bullied my children and nearly destroyed my house. I can't leave her unsupervised. Will you watch her until we find a way to change her back?"
Lin's small fist pounded into the man's metal sleeve, leaving tiny dents behind. "LET! ME! GO!"
Tenzin got down on a knee to be at eye level with her. "Hello," he said gently. "My name is Tenzin." Lin turned her angry eyes on him. "Would you like to stay on the island for a little while?"
"No! I want to go home!" She shouted.
Tenzin's concerned eyes flicked up to Saikhan and back to Lin. "Where is home?"
"I-- I--" Her struggle fizzled out to weak pulls. "I don't know but I'll find it!" Tears filled her defiant eyes.
He knew from being a father that sometimes it was best to distract children away from their big emotions. Tenzin put a warm smile on his face. "If you want to stay here, I have two daughters who love to make new friends and a son your age who likes fart jokes." Lin's bottom lip pushed her top one up into a frown. "I'll tell Meelo to hold off on the fart jokes," he quickly amended.
"Daddy, daddy!" Ikki yelled as she rode her air scooter down the hill towards them. "You'll never guess what kind of rock I found. Look at it! It's pink and white and when I lick it and hold it up in the sun you can see a rainbow. Auntie Kya loves rainbows." She dismounted from her scooter and leaned in close to Lin. "Hello! I'm Ikki, welcome to Air Temple Island! Would you like to know how many trees there are? What's your name?"
Lin stared at Ikki blankly. "Ikki," Tenzin said, "this is Lin. She might be staying with us for a little while if she wants to."
"Oh! I have an Auntie named Lin!" Ikki jumped up and down and clapped her hands rapidly. "She's the coolest. She can bend metal and has cool face scars and she's even my dad's ex-girlfriend but he doesn't like to talk about it. Have you ever seen a sky bison before?"
Young Lin was completely baffled by the child before her. Her struggle against Saikhan had ceased. Tenzin offered out his hand. "Would you like to see a sky bison?"
Curious pale green eyes looked up at him and she nodded. Her small hand reached out and grasped at his fingers. Tenzin nodded for Saikhan to let her go. He led the two children up to the bison stables for their first activity of the day.

Lin almost always being incredibly hostile with Suyin (even before the scarring, as the flashbacks in old wounds show us). Suyin taking on a placating role/ "rolling with the punches" attitude with Lin, even when they're adults and haven't seen each other in years. Suyin finally responding to Lin's insults with one of her own and immediately getting physically attacked.
Next time Suyin disagrees with Lin, even after they've supposedly made up, she lies to Lin to keep the peace. And goes behind her back because that is 'safer' than speaking her mind.
Lin's hurt towards Su is justified, but I find it interesting how Suyin never felt safe around Lin.
