Another Zelink Oneshot

While I was moving into my apartment last weekend I saw the cutest fanart by @lilredgummie and couldn’t stop thinking about it so now it’s a oneshot. 

Short and sweet!

They say that the Goddess Hylia hears all prayer from the smallest grasshopper to the tallest mountain. No matter the form they came in, She will hear them.

They never spoke of if there would be an answer.

Dripping snot stayed in a partially frozen state under her nose as her cracked lips moved soundlessly. Her unbound hair was no relief, barely shrouding her shoulders with the ends becoming damp. Any protective clothing had been shed before she ventured into the spring.

“The goddess will protect me,” she had smiled and continued to do so as the water climbed to her waist.

Mantras were finicky things. They were a special prayer of sorts that took priests years to memorize to completion, yet this young girl spoke dozens into empty air; some were small and took several minutes, others were pushing closer to an hour to consummate. They were a mixture of ancient tongue and common language that spoke of praises to the goddess. Each word was uttered with finality.

At first, she was shivering – so she pulled her bare arms closer. Then, she found that every small movement hurt – so she remained still. Now red blotched her cheeks, exposing the bone deep chills she kept trying to ignore.

“Princess,” the boy said at the foot of the pool. No longer was he turned to respect her privacy, nor was his sword positioned in a ready stance. When she didn’t indicate she had heard him, he repeated himself. “Princess Zelda, the weather has worsened.”

Still, she didn’t move to acknowledge him. Wind whipped by her, startling the water around her bowed form.

Link was never outright emotional with her, but he frowned – hard. Before she went in they had exchanged a few terse words. The princess refused his arguments despite the obvious reasoning that came with them. It was unwise for anyone to approach the cold in the manner that she did. Royalty or peasant, goddess-descendant or not, no one should breach sub-zero water at the peak of Mount Lanayru.

It had been thirty minutes since she stopped shivering. Nothing about that was not alarming.

He had a blanket in his arms, holding it as if she were on his way towards him. If she turned to him, maybe the sight would be inviting enough to do just that. A beat or two went by and when she did none of the sort, he gathered the tail end of it and let his frustration fall.

When the water hit his calf above his boot, the harshness of the water stole the breath from his lungs. He flinched, briefly pausing to withhold a wounded noise and pushed forward. The water gave resistance with fragmented ice being disturbed along the surface. As Link drew closer to Princess Zelda, he found her form more withered before Hylia. The statue loomed over them almost menacingly and he wondered if the carvers purposely made Her this way to scorn any adventurer who dared climb the mountain.

“Go away,” Zelda whispered once he was close enough to hear. “I’m not done with my prayer.”

Not even a moment went by before he draped the heavy blanket over her shoulders. Despite her words, she breathed in a shuddering breath and nearly fell into him.

“Do you hear yourself?” he asked, watching her critically. “You can barely speak.”

Her knight attendant turned her carefully, leading her with an arm around her shoulder. When his body touched her skin, she shook violently at his warmth which only spurred him to hold her closer. Her skin was like ice under his fingertips and her body sagged into his.

With gentle whispers, he urged her to the edge of the pool.

“I’m a fool for leaving you as long as I did.”

There was already a sadness in her steps, a slow lumbering of defeat that was all too familiar to the pair. Link lifted Zelda out of the spring before he stepped out himself, almost totally embracing her against the wind when he felt how violent it was against damp clothing.

“It’s over,” she said through a shuddering voice, “It’s over. I can’t do it.”

Her knight attendant shook his head against her. Whether that was to negate her or a flimsy attempt to transfer more of his heat, neither of them could discern. The fire was a welcome friend and he scrambled for extra blankets to better insulate her.

No other words were spoken under the setting sky where darkness was bound to engulf.
