What's your favorite costume version for all the batkids?
Oooh okay!! I'll go through a bunch but there are batkids I just don't have strong opinions on in this subject (namely Damian and Duke I'm so sorry)
1. So for Dick obviously the finger stripes are top quality but listen. Listen.
Tumblr media
I know it's over the top. I know it's ridiculous. I know he's showing a ridiculous amount of boob and that can't be safe. But tell me that it's not PEAK Dick Grayson. Overdramatic, over the top, sexy and impractical. Is it a good outfit for fighting crime in? Not even a little. Is it my favorite of every single one of his outfits?? Abso fucking lutely.
2. Jason's outfits post robin are all variations on the same theme, and while I like the hoodie look just fine, ultimately I'm here to be as horny as possible about Jason Todd and the leather jacket look is PEAK so
Tumblr media
I m e a n
Tumblr media
I think we can all agree that this is just. I want to sit on his lap. And just. Wiggle around a little till I'm comfortable. Don't talk to me
3. Tim has gone through a lot of costume variations - there was actually a poll a few weeks ago to decide which was the best one and at the time I voted for option 3:
Tumblr media
And I think I voted for it mostly because of what it symbolizes, because if I'm going to be honest, the one I find the most visually compelling is his current suit:
Tumblr media
I just think it's so elegant! Should he narratively still be Robin right now? Absolutely not. Do I think that this design is ridiculously aesthetically pleasing? Yes yes I do.
4. Cass is a character who hasn't had many costume designs, but they've all been really distinct from one another. My personal favorite is the Batgirl outfit:
Tumblr media
It's just so scary!!! Like it really defines her in so many ways, both as a person and as a vigilante, but the stitch on the mask is just so fucking horrifying and I LOVE it
5. Final one for now (again so sorry Damian and Duke you have good costumes I just don't have strong opinions about them 😭) Steph!!! Like Cass, not many costumes, but they all feel like her, which I love. The Batgirl outfit and modern Spoiler costume are both phenomenal, like genuinely I don't think she has a flop. However I really like the OG:
Tumblr media
She's just a shadow!! She has no face!!! She chooses to dress in bright purple eggplant and yet she's still seamlessly blending into the shadows and it's SO GOOD. The only other character who does this is literally batman. I'm just. Ugh I'm in awe of this design it's so good
Thank you for asking this was so much fun to compile!!!!! And now I have all these photos saved in my phone to just bring out like "these are my blorbos" and show to strangers like grandmothers do with their grandkids
(I already had the thigh photo saved I'm not going to even pretend otherwise)

This is definitely a continuation of my meme tweet but I think it's safe to say that Cass gets better treatment than Steph nowadays when it comes to DC.
And this isn't me trying to pit the characters against one another...
(I mean why would I do that? I want them to kiss, lmfao.)
But Cass has not only recently gotten a miniseries done by one of the best writers working in the industry today all about her fighting ghosts and whatnot, but also is getting significantly more adaptations than Steph from what I've been noticing.
Like Steph has a total of 3 adaptations I can count when Cass has like 4 currently.
BoP, YJ, Doom That Came to Gotham, Batwheels...
Also she'll likely appear in Harley Quinn according to the comics and with James Gunn on his cryptic bullshit it's most likely she'll appear in the DCU.
Meanwhile Steph has like 2 CW shows and YJ.
That's it.
And the only miniseries I can recall Steph appearing in is Robins which everyone hated. 😭
Not to mention I at least know if some of the stuff from Cassandra's pre-reboot past is canon because they literally spell it out for you.
Meanwhile with Steph I cannot tell, like there are references to War Games and shit but they never explicitly state if she has died before.
Cass also gets to wear her OG Batgirl suit with just one modification, while Steph is stuck in what is basically her Rebirth Spoiler outfit but with a bat emblem slapped on it.
I hate to say it but I think Cass is treated significantly better than Steph as of late and it is incredibly disappointing to me that every Batgirl still isn't treated equally by DC, like damn.
And I appreciate that DC is finally seemingly giving Cass better treatment, but like giving Steph the short end of the stick is just blegh.

A take at redesigning the Batfamily.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(some explanation down below)
I tried to keep it at a pretty classic look for most of them while making them a lot more distinct from their usual suits. I also took some inspiration from other costumes that looked really cool like Red Hood and Batgirl are pretty closely inspired by the Arkham Games and White Knight designs respectively, while also keeping it pretty close to other versions of their canon designs. For Nightwing I brought back the fingerstripes(™)  and gave him in general a lot more blue, because why not? I'm particularly happy about the Black Bat and Red Robin designs, which were completely different. I really had to try and avoid putting Cass in her og Batgirl costume, so instead I went with more of an ninja look, ditching the cape for a cool  anime scarf thing, and shoulder pads like from her Orphan costume. And for Tim, well I think DC really misses the mark with this guy, and gives him the weirdest costumes (burn that brown one and forgettt) and while I have a soft spot for the original cowled look, I like the whole bring Tim closer to the Robin mantle/he never really left it thing canon has been doing lately (did Damian quit btw? I haven't been paying attention) so tried to keep it a lot closer to a Robin costume, but with red instead. Hence the name. I didn't change too much with the actual Robin costume, just messed around with color placements. Might come back to that one.
Anyways that's all.

Hey, seeing you Hogwarts house's AU? You said that to put up with the first Robin suit you must be Gryffindor, and that caught me thinking... what howarts house's each batkids suit is? What suit is more Gryffindor? Or more Ravenclaw? Is it a suit that has form a legacy, a suit that was more practical and cleverly made, is it because of the feeling that were there during their creation, is it what it means? So that's it, it could be just their actual identity, their others identities, could be all their suits, your pick
Haha, I love that you noticed that and asked this. Honestly it was just an offhand comment that I didn’t really think about, but this is a fun idea. Also thanks for specifying ‘batkids’ bc the fam in general has so many costumes, I mean the kids do too so I’m just gonna start listing some. If I miss a costume feel free to ask about it.
OG Green Panties Robin Suit (aka the “Holy pixie boots Batman!”)
Gryffindor -> Running around Gotham in no pants is about “brave” and “bold” as you can get.
Discowing Suit (aka the “Low Dollar, High Collar”)
Hufflepuff -> I have never seen a costume that is less intimidating. Like this costume screams “I’m gonna hit you a couple times then give you life advice and hug”.
Classic Batgirl (aka the “Bronze Age Babe”)
Gryffindor -> It’s very “traditional hero”. Like, it’s Batman but a tad flashier and more show boaty.
Burnside Batgirl (aka the “Violent in Violet”)
Hufflepuff -> If someone wearing this costume asked me for directions I’d actually try to be helpful, most of the other suits I’d just say “three rights and a left”.
Pill Helmet and Go Go Boots (aka the “Crimson Cranium and Heelies sans Wheelies”)
Slytherin -> It really tries to be stylish and succeeds in being my worst nightmare.
Modern Red Hood (aka the “Wanna Join My Biker Gang?”)
Ravenclaw -> This costume is actually pretty smart, like he’s completely covered and always has a rebreather ready, also it looks comfy.
Black Bat with Just Mask (aka the “Edna Mode but Spiky”)
Hufflepuff -> It’s more open and welcoming than most of Cass’ suits. Also I’d give cookies to anyone wearing this costume bc they look like a cinnamon roll.
Black Bat with the Covered Face (aka the “Sleep Paralysis Demon of Gotham”)
Slytherin -> She really nails the cunning and cut throat aspects of Slytherin in this one. I would also give anyone wearing this suit correct directions, mostly out of fear.
Red Robin Suit avec Cowl (aka the “Condom Cowl”)
Ravenclaw -> Covers his face and actually protects him.
Red Robin Suit sans Cowl (aka the “Cute On the Outside, Dead On the Inside”)
Hufflepuff -> It doesn’t have the same face coverage as the last, instead it uses a friendlier looking domino. I’d also bake cookies for anyone wearing this suit.
Steph’s Batgirl (aka the “Third Verse Same as the First”)
Gryffindor -> A classic, yet heroic look that brings hope to Gotham.
Spoiler with Full Face Cover (aka the “Spooky, Scary Spoiler”)
Ravenclaw -> Full coverage plus a cape for dramatics. Also I would give my life and soul for Steph in this costume.
The Signal (aka the “Sunshine Boy”)
Hufflepuff -> I would not be mad if someone wearing This costume initiated an in person conversation with me.
Damian’s Robin Suit (aka the “Dark and Hoodie”)
Slytherin -> This is literally just the OG robin costume in its emo phase.
Batman #106 Cover Variant Damian (aka the “Two Masks is Better than One”)
Hufflepuff -> This is one of those times when Hufflepuff accepted someone out of pity. Like it wasn’t smart enough for Ravenclaw, or stylish enough for Slytherin, or heroic enough for Gryffindor. So Hufflepuff just sorta accepted it.

@toastedside asked in a gc for rec's of where to start w/ Batman comics and it turns out I have a lot of Opinions™️ about this so I thought I'd make a longer post :)
Basically, it boils down to:
Start with what you want to read!
Admittedly, that's not very helpful if you don't know where in the comics to find the bit you want to read, so we'll work from there! I've listed below what I think can be good entry points to the Batman (& the Batman Family of comics) based on what you might be looking for. [Keeping in mind that this list leans heavily away from DC's Rebirth/New 52... maybe someone who likes the newer stuff enough to keep up with them can help me out there??]
[Note: links go to the full comics on https://readconiconline.to - BUT! I *highly* recommend using an ad-blocker with this site! Some of the ads make me really uncomfy. You have been warned!]
Also, the ⭐s aren't important other than that they represent some of my personal faves :)
1. Looking for slightly-silly, lighthearted classic tales (from long before you were born)?? Try:
Batman: the Classic Casebook (includes The Rainbow Batman⭐ and Batman Meets Bat-Mite)
2. How about stories featuring Batman's two original partners? Check out:
Batgirl/Robin: Year One for an updated (circa 2013) take on Dick Grayson and Barbara Gordon's origin stories.
Or, if you've ever heard a reference to Babs' time in Congress and want to know more, try The Batman Family (1975) (Note: this is most definitely part of pre-crisis continuity and has little relation to the rest of the stories on this list, but it's a fun read ☺️)
3. Already know who your favorite Robin is? Are you sure about that? See:
For Dick Grayson, the OG™️ Boy Wonder:
Robin: Year One (above)
A throwback, but Batman & Superman's first Golden-age team up in World's Finest Comics #71 kicks off the "two dads and their son just having a good time" era
Not a Batman comic exactly, but New Teen Titans (1980) #1-8+ has the (pre-flashpoint/infinite crisis) origins of probably the most recognizable cast of the Teen Titans team (& features Dick striking out on his own)
Personally, I have... never really cared for all the retconning in 2005's Nightwing: Year One, so I'd recommend starting with either:
Nightwing (1995), the 4-issue limited run featuring #discowing ⭐ (honestly, the * isn't even for the story. The art is insane absolute gold. Dick's flowing locks. Alfred's green pinstriped suit. The artist's obvious thirst way they draw Dick & esp. when he's stripping off the suit. I just... can't even with this series. It never fails to make me giggle)
Or Nightwing (1996) #1 if finger-stripes are more your style (welcome to the Haven, Dick 😉)
For Jason Todd:
Batman (1940) #408 ⭐ (stealing the tires from the Batmobile will never not be a classic),
Batman (1940) #366-368 ⭐ (pre-crisis, but you will have to pry this version of Dick passing the mantle from my cold, dead hands),
Superman (1937) Annual #11: For the Man Who Has Everything (A throw-back: it's Clark's birthday at the fortress of solitude, and Robin saves the day!)
Legends of the Dark Knight: Norm Breyfogle (TPB, collected 🦇 comics mostly from the 80s, many of which feature Jason as Robin)
For Tim Drake:
Batman: A Lonely Place of Dying (1990) (collected from Batman/Teen Titans, Tim's first appearances after Jason's death),
Robin (1991) (Tim abroad, featuring Shiva and King Snake),
And Robin II (1992) ⭐ (Batman's out of town, but don't worry - Tim and Alfred have got this covered 😆)
For Stephanie Brown:
Honestly, you for Steph you *have* to start with Spoiler's introduction/origins. See: Detective Comics (1937) #647-649 ⭐, and
Showcase '95 #5 ⭐ (for the Spoiler stand-alone story)
From then on, she shows up every few issues in Robin (1993)
For Damian Wayne:
honestly, I... probably wouldn't recommend starting here? Maybe I'm too biased towards the 90s, but I just think you miss out on a ~lot~ of Batfam history if you do
If you're sure though, his first appearance is in Batman (1940) #655 circa 2006
4. Does Oracle's all-around badassery make you swoon? SAME
It's not her earliest appearance (that's in the 80s run of Suicde Squad, believe it or not), but for her origin story, see 'Oracle: Year One', in The Batman Chronicles (1995) #5 ⭐
Birds of Prey is iconique Oracle!Babs. See Black Canary/Oracle: Birds of Prey for the start of their adventures (and if you fall in love like I did, there's a good reading order by ComicBookHerald here, since there are a half-dozen differently-titled one-offs and mini series before the start of the BoP serial in 1999)
5. Love you some Cassandra Cain?? Me too!!
Her first appearance is in Batman (1940) #567 - BUT, it's the middle of the NML run, which is sooo good I recommend the whole thing. Depending on how much you want to bite off, I'd even recomend starting as far back as Batman: Contagion, because it's really really good.
Below I've listed the progression of major arcs in that era (most bridge the entire Batman Family of comics, from Detective Comics, Shadow of the Bat, Robin, and Nightwing, to Azreal, Catwoman, etc.). Any of these could be a good place to pick up the comics!
Batman: Prodigal (after B broke his back in the Knightfall arc, Dick Grayson temporarily takes the cape. Great for Dick & Tim brotherly bonding, plus flashbacks where Dick retells his origins)
Batman: Contagion & Batman: Legacy ⭐ (Ra's Al Ghul tries to take Gotham out with a plague)
Batman: Cataclysm & Batman: Aftershock/Road to No Man's Land
Batman: No Man's Land ⭐⭐ (Cass!!! The whole Batfam!! Oracle and the GCPD!! Huntress!!! Plus the A++ characterization of the rogues *cough*Ivy*cough*Two-Face*)
What do you think? Do you have different recommendations?
