Soundtrack of My Life (Part 2)
A few years back I did a rundown of my TOP TEN ALL TIME FAVOURITE BANDS, the ten bands that MOST made me the (relatively) well-rounded music fan that I am today (granted, a lot of it’s rock and metal, but there’s other stuff in there too), and it was good.  But then at the end I realised there were LOADS more bands that I really loved, that ALSO made me the music fan I am today to lesser but no less important) degrees, and so at the end I gave an “honourable mentions” list, resolving that sometime I’d come back to clebrate some more of them.  Well, that time has COME, bitches! XD  Yeah ... anyways, here we go, part 2, the next ten on the list, with more to come sometime in the future too ...
(Once again, in no particular order)
PEARL JAM
Tumblr media
fave tracks:  Black, Man of the Hour, Yellow Ledbetter, Better Man, Sirens, Jeremy, Dance of the Clairvoyants, Just Breathe, Even Flow, Given To Fly, Elderly Woman Behind the Counter In a Small Town, Daughter, Nothingman, Release, Thumbing My Way, Retrograde, The Fixer, Do the Evolution, All Those Yesterdays, Dissident, Superblood Wolf Moon, Why Go, Corduroy, World Wide Suicide, Nothing As It Seems, I Am Mine, Once, Breakerfall, Low Light, Mind Your Manners, Of the Girl, Seven O’Clock, Marker In the Sand, Future Days, Around the Bend, Alive
fave album:  Ten
Oh, these magnificent buggers ... I was just getting into my teens when grunge got into full swing, and while I liked Nirvana and loved Pixies and all that stuff, the bands that I REALLY flipped over from that scene were the ones that did something a little different, a bit more melodic, a bit more INTERESTING.  Top of the pile, for me, have ALWAYS been these guys, and their incredible staying power has really been a testiment of WHY I love ‘em all SO MUCH.  Most of all, though, it’s powerhouse frontman Eddie Vedder, a truly beautiful human being with one GODLIKE voice ...
Tumblr media
GREEN DAY
Tumblr media
fave tracks:  Jesus of Suburbia, Longview, Geek Stink Breath, Hitchin’ a Ride, ¡Viva la Gloria!, She’s a Rebel, When I Come Around, Meet Me On the Roof, Platypus (I Hate You), Minority, Panic Song, Basket Case, 86, Whatsername, See the Light, She, Brain Stew, Nice Guys Finish Last, Sassafras Roots, Give Me Novocaine, Revolution Radio, King For a Day, Walking Contradiction, Boulevard of Broken Dreams, Uptight, Pulling Teeth, Holiday, F.O.D.
fave album:  American Idiot
While The Clash are definitely my favourite of the original old school punk bands, there’s no bunch of hard-rocking ne’er-do-wells that I love more than THIS LOT, a trio of adorably, unapologetically anarchic little degenerates who helped me keep from taking everything TOO seriously when I was growing up.  No matter where I go in my musical odyssey, this is one band that I ALWAYS come back to in the end.
Tumblr media
FIGHTSTAR
Tumblr media
fave tracks:  Hazy Eyes, Floods, The English Way, Overdrive, Mono, Deathcar, The Whisperer, Where’s the Money Lebowski?, Amaze Us, Paint Your Target, Sharp Tongue, Palahniuk’s Laughter, The Blackest of Birds, Tannhauser Gate, Zihuatanejo, War Machine, You & I (feat. Rachel Haden), Amethyst, Titan, Tonight We Burn, I Am the Message, Grand Unification Parts I & II, Follow Me Into Darkness, More Human Than Human
fave album:  One Day Son, This Will All Be Yours
Way back in the early Noughties, when pop music was largely shite and boy bands were a serious business, one particular bunch seemed like a particularly worrying cash-in attempt to do the same with rock music, Busted beind the top offender for me.  Imagine my surprise, then, when years later one of that band’s members, vocalist and guitarist Charlie Simpson, went off to do his own thing and FORMED A VERY SERIOUS METAL BAND.  I scoffed ... but very quickly choked on my words.  These guys are AWESOME.  Edgy, offbeat, surprisingly playful and massively geeky fans of sci-fi, they’re VERY ME.  I wait with bated breath for their overdue return ...
Tumblr media
SARA BAREILLES
Tumblr media
fave tracks:  Gravity, Love Song, Machine Gun, Sweet As Whole, She Used To Be Mine, Cassiopeia, If I Dare, Poetry By Dead Men, City, Breathe Again, One Sweet Love, You Matter To Me (feat. Jason Mraz), Bright Lights and Cityscapes, Armor, Brave, Uncharted, Come Round Soon, A Soft Place To Land (feat. John Legend), Stay, Kaleidoscope Heart, December, Orpheus, Everything Changes, I Choose You
fave album:  Kaleidoscope Heart (almost a dead heat with Little Voice, though)
Another one of my musical crushes, which I discovered around the same time as Florence Welch, but in some ways a very different artist (although JUST as talented).  A pop-rock singer songwriter of almost unrivalled talent, with a wicked sense of humour and a beautifully complex, husky voice that just DOES THINGS to me.
Tumblr media
A PERFECT CIRCLE
Tumblr media
fave tracks:  Gravity, Talktalk, 3 Libras, By and Down (Three Sixty version), Fiddle & the Drum, So Long & Thanks For All the Fish, Judith, The Outsider, Passive, The Doomed, The Nurse Who Loved Me, Orestes, Pet, Hourglass, Imagine, Weak & Powerless, Magdalena, Disillusioned, Counting Bodies Like Sheep To the Rhythm of the War Drums, Breña, The Contrarian, Blue, Thinking of You, Delicious, The Noose
fave album:  Eat the Elephant
Another list, another Maynard James Keenan band (least that’s how it feels sometimes XD).  But yeah, Tool may be one of my vary favourite bands OF ALL TIME, but his side-project with Billy Howerdell, along with Danny Lohner and Smaching Pumpkins’ James Iha, creates some seriously top-quality alternative style prog rock in its own right.
Tumblr media
EVANESCENCE
Tumblr media
fave tracks:  My Heart Is Broken, Wasted On You, Tourniquet, Missing, Call Me When You’re Sober, Made of Stone, The Game Is Over, Hello, Lacrymosa, Imperfection, The Change, Far From Heaven, Everybody’s Fool, Lithium, Blind Relief, Oceans, Your Star, Even In Death, The Other Side, Imaginary, Use Your Voice, Swimming Home
fave album:  Evanescence
When I finally grew up (the early Noughties) and finally realised I didn’t need to belong to be who I am, I thought I’d left the whole goth thing that I’d been into in to 90s behind ... until I discovered Amy Lee and her fantastically dark, full-blooded music (not to mention her astounding voice, of course).  They don’t release often, but this is becoming one of their great strengths - when they do, it’s ALWAYS gold.
Tumblr media
DON BROCO
Tumblr media
fave tracks:  Further, Pretty, Manchester Super Reds No. 1 Fan, Fingernails, Technology, Superlove, Action, You Wanna Know, Whole Truth, Nerve, T-Shirt Song, Bruce Willis, Hold On, Stay Ignorant, Half Man Half God, Gumshield, Money Power Fame, Got To Be You, One True Prince, Everybody, Let’s Go Back To School, The Blues, I Got Sick, Endorphins
fave album:  Technology
My favourite of the new breed of English alt rock bands that’s emerged in the last ten years, this thoroughly mental Bedford quartet are one of the most unusual, oddball and thoroughly brilliant up-and-coming groups knocking about right now.  Chunky beats and power chords, quirky vocalwork and a brilliantly bonkers sense of humour mean these guys are about the most fun you can have in music these days.
Tumblr media
PINK FLOYD
Tumblr media
fave tracks:  Sorrow, Comfortably Numb, Shine On You Crazy Diamond, High Hopes, Time, Run Like Hell, Wish You Were Here, Fat Old Sun, Coming Back To Life, Brain Damage/Eclipse, Us And Them, What Do You Want From Me, Keep Talking, Welcome To the Machine, Another Brick In the Wall, Learning To Fly, A Great Day For Freedom, The Great Gig In the Sky, On the Turning Away, Take It Back, Money
fave album:  The Dark Side of the Moon (The Wall a close second)
The undeniable masters of prog rock, one of the greatest bands of all time, and one of the biggest influences even on more than a few of my favourite artists plying their trade today.  These guys were consistently OUT THERE, and also very frequently downright ASTOUNDING, not least in the undeniable magic ingredient that is the greatest guitarist of all time, the legendary David Gilmour.
Tumblr media
R.E.M.
Tumblr media
fave tracks:  Strange Currencies, Me In Honey, Driver 8, Pop Song 89, The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonight, Fall On Me, Carnival of Sorts, What’s the Frequency Kenneth?, Superman, Radio Free Europe, King of Birds, Sweetness Follows, Finest Worksong, Country Feedback, Daysleeper, Leave, Talk About the Passion, Hyena, Orange Crush, Can’t Get There From Here, Ignoreland, Disturbance At the Heron House, The One I Love, Find the River, Tongue, New Test Leper, I Believe, At My Most Beautiful, Half a World Away, Swan Swan H, World Leader Pretend, Drive, Low, Cuyahoga, Lotus, So Fast So Numb, It’s the End of the World As We Know It (and I Feel Fine)
fave album:  Lifes Rich Pageant
There are really TWO R.E.M.s, the IRS Records era before they made it big, and this breakaway big hit stuff that came along after they released Losing My Religion.  I love their WHOLE back catalogue (although I’d probably choose the earlier stuff if forced), because they were ALWAYS brilliant, the best of the early post-punk wave of alternative rock bands to come out of America (and EASILY the strongest contemporaries for The Cure, as far as I’m concerned.
Tumblr media
PVRIS
Tumblr media
fave tracks:  Half, Holy, Use Me, Are You Ten Years Ago, What’s Wrong, Things Are Better, Chandelier, Only Love, Gimme a Minute, Seperate, St Patrick, Heaven, You and I, Hallucinations, Same Soul, Dead Weight, White Noise, Empty, Monster, Nola 1, Ghosts, Thank You (feat. RAYE), Heaven
fave album:  All We Know of Heaven, All We Need of Hell
And last by BY NO MEANS last, the awesome Lynn Gunn and her magnificent alternative electro rock extravaganza (yeah, I know they’re technically a three-piece, but Lynn has since - quite rightly - come out as being THE MAIN PERSON behind Pvris).  Brilliantly experimental, constantly evolving and always DEEPLY affecting, dominated by Lynn’s irrepressible weapons-grade musical talent.  This girl is destined for GREAT THINGS INDEED ...

Chapter 8 -- Perfect Harmony | Charlie Gillespie
Summary: Emily Fox is a talented 17-year-old with a passion for all things music. Her dream is to become a successful singer-songwriter one day. But to achieve that dream, she needs to get into one of the most prestigious music schools in her district – it’s all been part of her plan since she was six. Sadly enough, those schools cost a ton of money that her parents don’t want to invest. They don’t even want her to pursue her dream. So, now Emily’s hustling, working at the music store to save up to get into college. That’s until she meets Charlie, an annoying seventeen-year-old boy with the same dream as her. The only difference is, he’s just doing it. He doesn’t need a fancy college to pursue his dream to become famous with his band. He just writes his songs and books small gigs here, there and everywhere. Will meeting Charlie defer her from her dream college, or will he actually help her achieve the dream?
Pairing: Charlie Gillespie x OC (Emily Fox)
Warnings: mentions of death, sexual assault
Important note: the characters of Charlie, Owen, Jeremy and Madison are based on the characters they play on the show and i do not own their names, only OC are mine. The songs aren’t mine either, they’re all from the show except for one.

Chapter eight
~|Charlie Gillespie|~
Emily called me Charlie and now I can’t stop thinking about it. “Hey dude! How you doing?” Jeremy asks when I walk into the garage for a band practice when I come back from the Music Store. I can’t hide the smile that’s tugging at my lips. “She called me Charlie.” Both Owen and Jeremy look at me, a little stumped. “I mean, that’s your name?” Owen fairly points out. “Yeah! But she always called me Charles, you know with that scowl on her face and the corners of her mouth curling up slightly because she doesn’t want to smile. But tonight she actually called me Charlie!” I can’t contain my excitement. I feel like bouncing off the walls, running a marathon, climbing the Kilimanjaro. All in one night. “Happy for you, bro, but can we rehearse now?” Owen asks, seemingly stressed out, “My parents are annoyed at me and need me home asap.” He rolls his eyes at the thought alone. I pat his shoulder and grab my electric guitar, so we can start rehearsing. “Let’s do Crooked Teeth?” I suggest, and both Jeremy and Owen agree. I can’t stop thinking about Emily though. She called me Charlie.
“Practice tonight?” Jeremy asks when we meet at school the following day. “Yeah, but after seven. I’m hanging out with Emily tonight.” Owen and Jeremy’s eyebrows raise simultaneously. “Like a date?” Jeremy wants to know. “No,” I reply faster than I wanted to. “No, I’m just going to hang out at the store, play my guitar while she cleans up.” My two best friends nod their heads in understanding. “You’re bringing your own guitar to the Music Store?” Owen questions. “No, uhm… There’s this one guitar I always play when I’m there and she called it mine last night, so…” Once again, I can’t withhold myself from smiling at the thought alone. “Is it that Fender CD-60 in black?” Owen asks. “Yeah, that one,” I reply. “That’s the one she was tuning when I went in the store to ask her about the Open Mic Night.” I raise an eyebrow at him. So it was her that tuned the instrument differently from how I did it last time I was there. “Might’ve been a coincidence though.” “Might be,” I say, nodding, not believing one thing. That was no coincidence. Either she did that to mess with me, or she wanted to play the guitar I always used because she missed hearing the sound while working. I’m kind of hoping for the latter, which also means she missed me. Kind of.
Emily hasn’t arrived at the Music Store yet. Only Ash is present, along with a dude I’ve never seen before. I wonder if he’s the other employee whenever Emily’s at school.
“Oh, hey! Charlie, right?” Ash approaches me when I’m about to grab my guitar.
“Yeah. Yeah, hi, Ash!” The woman is taller than me, her bright red hair cut into a pixie cut, and her eyeliner dark and defining. She looks really cool. “Emily not here yet?”
“I’m afraid not. She might’ve been just held up at school or something. She’ll be here soon.”
“Okay, good. I wanted to ask her something.”
“Like on a date?” Ash wiggles her eyebrows suggestively.
“What? No!” My answer sounds way too defensively. “I wanted to ask her something about music.” Now she has this face that just tells me she doesn’t believe one thing I’m saying. I wasn’t planning on asking Emily on a date. Not that I don’t want to. I just think it’s too soon. She’s just warming up to me, I’m not going to jeopardize that by asking her on a date.
“Ah, too bad. I think you’d be a great couple.” I manage to offer her a smile while my insides are heating up. “I actually wanted to ask you for a favor.”
“To ask Emily out?” I ask, totally confused and too focused on my body heating up.
“No, no!” she scoffs, “No, I wanted to ask if you would help me out and polish some of the guitars? Most of those are just there for display since we have the actual for sale ones in the back in stock, but they’re in dire need of a good polish and my new assistant is shit.” I widen my eyes, knowing he’s walking around here and heard that. “It’s my brother, I’m allowed to say that,” she whispers to me and winks, comforting me a little bit. “I don’t mind paying you for it?” The offer sounds compelling, but I’ve been playing their guitars for weeks without ever paying for anything except when I actually purchased something.
“Oh, no, it’s fine. I’ll do it for free. I’m here every day anyway.” Ash offers me a smile.
“Yeah, I know, that’s why I’m asking.” I open my mouth to say something else, but Ash has already turned back to her ‘shit assistant’. So, I close it and turn around to get to the guitars. I grab the one next to the black Fender, a mahogany Fender, when Ash brings me the polish to get to work. Which is also when the bell over the door rings, signaling a new client in the store. I look up to see if I’d recognize them from the neighborhood, and when I do, I can’t help the smile tugging at my lips. It’s Emily. And with the low sun shining through the large windows behind her, she almost looks like an angel. She already has the voice for it.
“Hey, Charlie,” she greets with a wave.
“H-Hi, E-Emily.” I’m not sure why my mouth can’t form the proper words, but I’m struggling.
“Is Ash exploiting you now?” She points at the polish and the guitar in my hands.
“I mean, I’m here all the time anyway, so…” Emily raises an eyebrow before making her way to the cash register where Ash and her brother are fighting. Now I’m curious what she’s going to do since she didn’t really react to what I said.
“Are you exploiting kids for free now, Ashlynn?” She always uses full names when annoyed. Noted. Ash turns to face Emily, mid-conversation with her brother, her eyes wide.
“I didn’t pay you on Monday either because you told me you would do it for free, just as he said he’d do it for free. I’m just calling it a win-win situation,” she shrugs.
“He doesn’t work here though, I do. If I take non-paid hours, that’s my problem. He doesn’t work here. He has no contract. You know that brings both of you in trouble, right?” Ash’s eyes widen as if she’d forgotten about all of that since she’s been too busy with her brother. Deciding to hop into savior-mode, I hop off the bench I’m sitting on and rushing towards the girls. “I really don’t mind, Emily. If this means I get to spend time with you, I’d do anything.” Emily’s mouth curls up into a shy smile as her cheeks turn pink.
“Anything?” Ash asks with eyebrows raised.
“Don’t,” Emily says quickly, the tint in her cheeks not leaving, but the smile does, “even think about it. He’ll do the polishing while I clean up, but that’s it.” Ash wants to add something, but Emily gives her a sharp look that makes her shut up. “Now get your brother home.”
“Aye, aye, captain,” she salutes her employee before grabbing her brother by the sleeve and tugging him along through the store until they’re at the door. “Be good, you two!” she yells before shutting the door and leaving me and Emily alone.
“You really didn’t have to stand up for me to your manager like that,” I tell her while she gets behind the counter to sort things through. “Are you going to get in trouble?”
“No, I’m not going to get in trouble. Ash and I know each other very well and we talk shit to each other all the time. She told me I could always call her out on things I didn’t like,” she explains to me whilst sorting through some papers.
“Oh… okay!” I reply, not entirely sure what to say to that, “You still didn’t have to do that though. I don’t mind polishing guitars, especially if it means I get to spend time with you.” Emily’s face lights up again and I can see her looking at me through her lashes.
“That’s sweet, Charlie, but she still doesn’t get to just pick someone who comes here a lot and tell them to do something. Especially without a contract. You can get into a lot of trouble.” All I heard was “You’re sweet, Charlie”. I don’t really care what else she’d said. I’m sweet.
“Won’t you get into trouble for letting customers in after hours?” I ask instead.
“Do you
want
me to kick you out?” I shake my head vigorously, raising my hands in defense, lifting the guitar in the meantime.
“I’m just gonna…” I nod to the bench I’d come from.
“Yeah,” she replies, that mischievous smile cracking through her tough façade again.
While she handles a few last customers, I admire her from afar while polishing up the guitars. I can’t help but notice how her smile comes and fades with every customer. It’s her customer-service-smile, I can tell. A smile far from the ones she gives me. I also notice how she strains herself, trying to keep from rolling her eyes too much at annoying customers. Or how her lashes flutter whenever she laughs at something someone has said, which I’m sure is a fake laugh too because it wasn’t that funny. Or how she rubs her nose when she’s concentrating.
“UGH!” she groans when turning the little board to tell customers the store has closed for tonight. “People are so dumb!”
“How have you not punched anyone yet?” I ask her, trying to lighten the mood, but it only lands me a sharp glare. The glare only lasts for a second though, as if it was a reaction to what I said but then she realized who said it and softened.
“I have almost punched someone,” she says with a smirk, “On several occasions. Mostly when they’re middle-aged women, thinking they know what they’re doing.” I can’t help but laugh. I would also nearly punch middle-aged know-it-all women if I punched women.
“I admire your willpower to withhold yourself,” I compliment, which earns me a smile. A real smile. None of her customer-service smiles.
“You can stop polishing now,” she tells me. I open my mouth to tell her I don’t mind, but she stops me. “Please, stop polishing the guitars and play one for me. My work gets done faster with your music in the background.” I can feel my lips curling up at that. Maybe she did miss me the other day when she tuned my guitar.
“I’m actually working on a song,” I say while placing the last polished guitar in its place and taking the black Fender instead. “Maybe you could help me on the parts I think suck?” She opens her mouth, and I know what she’s going to say, so I quickly add, “I know you can’t write with me, but I just want your honest opinion, okay?” Her mouth closes and changes into a smile instead, which then changes into a lip-bite. It nearly sends me.
I strum the guitar and begin playing the chords I’ve been working on for a while now, then I start singing the pre-chorus and the chorus I have so far.
“I wanna fly Come alive Watch me shine”
I watch Emily, who’s smiling while grabbing a broom to start sweeping up the place. I quicken the pace of the song a little.
“I got a spark in me Hands up if you can see And you're a part of me Hands up if you're with me”
Before I can continue with what I had, Emily chimes in with something better.
“Now 'til eternity Hands up if you believe Been so long and now we're finally free”
I stop playing to reach for my notebook in my backpack.
“That’s way better than what I had,” I tell her, causing her smile to grow.
“What else you got?” she asks, not taking her eyes off the floor as she sweeps, but I know she’s really interested. Otherwise she wouldn’t ask. Emily is the sort of person, I noticed, who would only ask further if interested. If it doesn’t interest her, the conversation is over.
I play the same chords again and sing the next verse, hoping she’d complete it.
“We're all bright now What a sight now Coming out like we're fireworks”
Her voice is a little soft and hesitant, but I still hear it perfectly.
“Marching on proud Turn it up loud Cause now we know what we're worth”
I nod my head excitedly whilst grabbing my notebook again and writing down her lyrics.
“You’re really talented, Emily,” I tell her honestly, then go back to softly stroking the strings of my guitar. “I can’t wait until you let your creative juices out in the world and, you know, write with me. Properly.”
“This is all because of you, Charlie. Your words… I don’t know… They just perfectly flow with what I create in my own mind.” I’m stumped by that response. That’s exactly how I feel too. We fit so well together, songwriting-wise. It’s a pity we can’t do this more often.
“How can I convince you to join our band?” I blurt out without thinking, and it startles her too. At first, I think she’s going to shut me out again, call me Charles again, give me that scowl. Instead, she halts her sweeping and slowly looks up at me.
“I’m not sure… I guess it wouldn’t hurt to think about it.” I don’t think I was this happy when finding out we got a gig, but I jump up from the bench, leave the guitar on it, and run up to her, picking her up into a tight hug.
“I didn’t say yes, Charlie,” she says, laughing loudly. I slowly put her back on the floor. Our faces are inches away from each other. “I didn’t say yes…” she repeats but this time in a whisper. I’ve never seen her from up close like this. Her eyes glimmer and I finally notice the faint freckles decorating her nose and cheeks. My heart thumps in my chest, but all I can do is hope she doesn’t hear or feel.
“I know,” I finally reply, “But thinking about it is a start.” She stares at me for a while like I’m the only person on this planet for her. I’ve never felt anything like this. This feeling of feeling wanted, of feeling seen.
My lips part a little, my lungs not getting enough oxygen through my nose, and as I glance from her eyes to her lips and back, I swear she’s leaning in too. My eyes flutter shut when I see her eyelashes fluttering too. Her breath tickles my lips. It’s almost—
Our lips brush slightly when the bell of the store rings through the entire shop. Emily and I both jump apart, startled, like deer caught in headlights. The redheaded Ash gives us a sheepish smile when she realizes what she’s interrupted.
“I’ve interrupted a special moment, haven’t I?” she hisses, “I’m so sorry!”
“No!” Emily says defensively, which makes me turn my head towards her to see what she has to be all defensive about. “No, you’re fine. Nothing was happening.” Oof, ouch. That hurts.
“Okay…” says Ash, clearly not believing a word Emily says. “I forgot my backpack in the back.” She points to the door behind the counter before actually moving to go and get it.
“You can go home, Charlie. I’ll lock up with Ash,” Emily orders sweetly, suddenly very absent and withdrawn. As if nothing just happened. Like she said.
“Don’t you want me to walk you home?” I suggest, hoping she’ll say yes.
“Uhm, no, that’s fine. I’ll ask Ash for a ride. Thanks though,” she gives me a smile that’s supposed to be comforting, but really isn’t.
“Okay…” I mumble and turn to grab my backpack and place the guitar in its place. “I’ll see you tomorrow?”
Please, say yes, please, say yes.
“Yeah. Yeah, definitely,” she replies, “I mean, you do have a lot of guitars left to polish.” She points at the wall of guitars, offering me a teasing smile this time. At least she’s not sick of me or doesn’t find it too awkward what just happened a couple seconds ago.
“Right, yeah!” I chuckle, “Yeah, see you tomorrow, Emily.” I raise my hand in a wave and leave the store, hearing her shout a “see you tomorrow, Charlie!” back.
I’ve got no clue what happened just then. But I wanted it to last longer. I wanted it to last forever.

The Reluctants | Chapter 1 | The Reluctant Landlord
Tumblr media
Pairing: Adam (OLLA) x OFC (Charlie Bock)
Summary:  Charlie can’t believe her luck when she lands an apartment all to herself in Quincy, Massachusetts in a decaying triple decker. But life gets more complicated when someone moves into the basement. Specifically her landlord, Adam, who also happens to be a vampire. As life collapses around Charlie, these two forge an uneasy and unlikely relationship. But is their relationship as doomed as the building they live in?
Warnings: Violence, Smut, Frottage, Dry Humping, Teasing, Coming In Pants, Oral Sex, Vaginal Sex. Couch Sex. Kidnapping. Stalking. Non-Graphic Violence, Character Death
-
The hardwood floors creaked under Charlie’s weight as she pushed off the mishmash of sheets, quilts, and duvets to the side and her bare feet landed. She ruffled her impossible brown curls, which smashed flat against the back of her head after a night of sleep. It was only September but the old triple decker on the outskirts of Quincy, Massachusetts seemed to be in a wind tunnel. Every gust, bluster, breeze, or slight cough rattled the aging home. But Charlie wasn’t about to complain.
With her salary at Legal Aid barely covering the high cost of living in Boston, it forced Charlie to get creative with her living situation. Roommates were not an option after her last one during her third year of law school, decided instead of washing dishes, she would tuck them wherever convenient. Be that between couch cushions or in an early edition of The Hobbit Charlie kept along with her other books on a shelf in the living room. Charlie took to locking valuables in her room and swore off living with anyone.
It was a pure stroke of luck when the listing for an entire two-bedroom apartment in a converted house came up for cheaper than sharing something downtown. She submitted an application and was delighted when the property management company contacted her to do a walkthrough. The house was old and falling apart around them. When a piece of crown molding nearly took the agent’s head off, Charlie negotiated for a 15% percent reduction in rent. There was only one thing nearly stopping her from moving. The landlord.
For one, his name. No one in 2020 is named Nicolas Copernicus. Not Copernicus himself would be called that in 2020. He would change his name to something like Nick Copper and found a startup company in his college dorm room. Charlie attempted to use what little resources she had at her disposal at her job to determine the true identity ofher mysterious landlord. All searches ended up at the same place. NOZ, Inc. A company with no internet presence. But plenty of assets.
“I am telling you I think my house is front for the mob. Or WitSec!” Charlie protested as she slumped into her desk chair.
“Or maybe,” Elise retorted. “It’s just a corporation that bought up a bunch of buildings to make some easy revenue.”
Her green eyes shot daggers at her co-worker. “If that’s the case, how come every week there is something new falling apart? Wouldn’t they refurbish the place before renting it out?”
Elise opened her mouth to respond when she stiffened in her seat. Charlie spun her chair to come face to face with a stained dress shirt. That shirt belonged to her boss, Jason Chambers.
“Ms. Bock.” He stared down Charlie through wired frame glasses too small for his round face. “If you are done socializing, a word in my office.” He jerked his thumb to the glorified cubicle he called his “office” and walked away.
“Sorry,” Elise mouthed while Charlie smoothed out her Banana Republic Outlet blazer and skirt.
“It’s all right.” Charlie gave a tense smile.
“Take a seat.” Jason gestured to a stained chair covered in paper. Charlie shifted her weight on her heels.
“I’ll just stand.” The sooner she got of there the better.
“I make this short and to the point. Your spending too much time with the clients.”
Charlie opened her mouth to protest, but Jason held up a hand. “We are here to help with legal issues not listening to their life story.” Jason grimaced. Charlie learned early on Jason believed this job was beneath his Harvard education.
“Those life stories often have bearing on their legal cases.” she interjected.
“I don’t care. Move the cases along faster or I will have to terminate your employment.” Jason grinned over the table. “This is your only warning.”
He locked eyes with Charlie, who held his stare. “Understood, sir.”
Jason’s face broke out in a smug grin. “You’re dismissed.”
Charlie shuffled out and back to her desk. Elise leaned forward.
“What did the B.O.D. want?” B.O.D. standing for Bag of Dicks, their nickname for Jason.
“Just the usual. Stop talking so much, move the cases.” Charlie huffed, doing a poor imitation of their boss.
The two giggled until Jason popped his head over the top of his cubicle, glowering. Elise snapped back upright and returned to typing, while Charlie busied herself with the papers in her inbox until he disappeared again back into his hole. The day continued on like that until lunch when Elise and Charlie hightailed it out of the office to a nearby deli.
“Did I tell you about the weird note I got last week?” Charlie stood over at the counter in the crowded deli, crunching up oyster crackers into her clam chowder.
“Do tell.”
“So I got home late one night to find this,” Charlie fished a crumpled piece of paper out of her purse, bringing up a couple of rubber bands and a lipstick along with it.
Elise unfolded the paper while taking a bite of her Reuben sandwich. “Is this written with a quill?”
“You noticed the ink splatters too? And what about the handwriting? Is that the handwriting of a serial killer or what?” Charlie dribbled some soup on her blouse. She dabbed at the stain with a napkin.
“Who is Mr. Shelley?”
“My new basement neighbor.”
“What does he look like?”
Charlie dribbled more soup. “No clue. Haven’t seen him.”
“Nothing?”
“I have only heard the hum of some music through the floorboards. I think he is nocturnal. Like a bat or something.”
“Spooky.” Elise passed the paper back, and they finished their lunch, making plans for drinks later that night.
Jason slipped out around 4:30 in the afternoon claiming he had to make a “supply run” and would be back in twenty minutes. Everyone knew this was code for that he needed to go pick up his skinny ass girlfriend from work because she couldn’t drive having just racked up her third DUI. Charlie suspected they met at Jason’s previous job at the Public Defender’s Office, but nothing substantial turned up in her searches of public access records.
“Come on, Charlie, let’s knock off early and grab drinks.” Elise already shut down her computer and was pulling her coat on.
“One second…” Charlie held up a finger as she put the finishing touches on a pleading. She hit save and closed the document. “… there. Where to?”
“How about the restaurant across the street? Bar menu is half off for happy hour.”
“Looks like momma is getting drunk on beer and burgers tonight.” Charlie snagged her coat off the back of her chair and followed Elise out the door.
-
Charlie stumbled up her stairs, her heels in her hand. It was late. In fact, so late that she had nearly missed the last train home. But it was worth it to spend time with Elise and some other friends.
As she fumbled for her keys, a sound came from the side basement entrance. Crouching low, Charlie crawled over to the crumbling railing to see what was the source.
Charlie spied two men standing at the threshold. She squinted in the dark, making a mental note to schedule an eye appointment. One man appeared to be wearing scrubs underneath an old gray peacoat. While the other man leaned out of the basement. Mr. Shelley, Charlie surmised. He looked like something out of a punk music video from the 1980s. His black hair shot out like wires and his clothes were all black and either leather or denim.
In a flash of brilliance or stupidity, depending on how one thought about it, Charlie retrieved her phone from her pocket and turned on the camera to record.
Charlie now spotted the Stop and Shop bag in the Scrubs Guy’s hand. She covered her mouth as she gasped when Mr. Shelley pulled a wad a cash from his back pocket. His head snapped in Charlie’s direction and she ducked into the shadows.
The two men finished the exchange, and Charlie shifted her weight to relieve a cramp in her calf. As she moved, the termite-ridden porch gave way and her foot went clear through the crawlspace. Charlie scrambled to her feet as footsteps approached, slamming her front door and dead bolting it once she got inside. She remained motionless and boot steps stopped in front of her door. It seemed like an eternity before the footsteps faded away and Charlie exhaled. Now sober, she trotted off to the kitchen for a late snack before tucking into bed to watch old reruns of Scarecrow and Mrs. King.
-
The next day was a repeat of the one before, except today was Friday and payday which meant instead of the nearby deli, Elise and Charlie splurged on delicious Chinese food, side of egg rolls plus a trip to the store for candy to be stashed in the top drawer of their desks. Jason kept to himself, grunting to himself.
“Bets on what he is looking at in there?” Marie, the receptionist, asked.
“Nudes from the girlfriend.” Charlie chimed in.
“Porn Hub.” Elise added.
“Cat videos on YouTube.” Marie commented as she waltzed over and popped her head over the cubicle wall.
Elise and Charlie giggled as keyboard keys clattered at a frantic pace. Jason muttered to Marie before she jogged back to the girls.
“You owe me twenty bucks.” Marie commented, pointing at Charlie “and you owe me twenty bucks.” She turned to Elise. “Lazy Cat Turns Body Into Slinky To Get Down The Stairs.”
Charlie grumbled as she fished out her wallet. A receipt came along with her striped wallet, along with a bus ticket. “He watched that one last week too.”
“And yet you continue to guess nudes. Someone sounds sexually frustrated.” Marie snatched the bill away from Charlie and grabbed Elise’s, reaching across the desk.
“Which is why you should use that twenty to buy me a drink tonight, so I might loosen up enough to land myself a date.” Charlie quipped. She widened her eyes until they looked like huge emerald saucers.
Marie pursed her lips. “That Puss in Boots look won’t work today. I have to meet my mom out in Brighton for a family dinner. Besides, I thought you hated dates. Especially after what’s his name?”
Charlie’s nose wrinkled at the word “family”. To say her own family relationship was strained would be an understatement. Shattered to a thousand pieces and scattered to the ends of the earth might be closer to the truth.
“Richard.”
“Dick the Serial Dater.” Elise added. “Didn’t the hostess comment you were the fourth girl he brought in there that week?”
“Yes, and I don’t want to talk about it. I’m so sorry, Marie. I should buy you a drink.”
Marie giggled as she returned to the front desk. “Not every hates family and relationships like you.”
Charlie squirmed. “I don’t hate relationships. I just don’t like the fanfare that goes along with them. I just want a guy who is happy being him and let’s me be me. No strings, no commitments. And no dates.” She shuddered.
“You want a fuck buddy.” Elise commented as she pulled her phone receiver away from her ear.
Charlie shushed Elise. “I don’t want a ‘fuck buddy’. I just want a guy who doesn’t expect me to swoon after him or put aside my interests for his. I want to be me, fucked up me. And it doesn’t hurt if he is hot as hell.”
“That guy doesn’t exist, Charlie.”
She sighed. “You’re right, but a girl can dream.”
Jason snuck out even earlier than usual. Marie mouthed “anniversary” as he walked by before slapping on a fake smile as he exited onto the crowded downtown Boston sidewalk.
Charlie pinched the bridge of her nose before blinking and return to the writ she was drafting. The last hour of the workday flew by and Elise was soon tapping her shoulder.
“Drinks at McCormicks?”
“I’m shouldn’t. I partied a little too hard last night. I’m not sure my liver can take it.”
“I’ll buy you truffle fries.” Elise singsonged.
“Well, one drink won’t kill me.” Charlie capitulated.
“That’s the spirit.”
They linked arms and waved goodbye to Marie before heading down to Faneuil Hall.
-
Charlie was true to her word and only had one drink. Which was good fortune because she was sober enough to realize when she got home, her front door was ajar. She dropped her purse at the door and grabbed a commemorative hockey stick from a Bruins game from the umbrella holder by the door. Wielding it like a sword, she stepped first into the living room to find the place not ransacked, but rumpled, as though someone had gone through her things but attempted to put them back as they were.
“Hello?” she called out like every soon to be dead girl in a horror film. A noise echoed from her bedroom and Charlie tightened her grip on the hockey stick and made her way there. She nearly dropped the stick when she saw the man she presumed to be Mr. Shelley standing there, her silk pajamas fisted in his hand.
“What the fuck are you doing in my apartment?!” She yelled.
In a blur, the hockey stick disappeared from her hand. She glanced around the room to find it but saw it nowhere in sight. It wasn’t until the end of the weekend Charlie noticed it back in its place in the umbrella holder by the front door.
“Are you going to answer my question or just stand there, creasing my best set of pajamas?” Charlie tapped her foot on the floor. “You can’t be in here. It’s my place.”
“Yes, I can.” His words slow like syrup. His accent British. Charlie’s chest tightened for a moment. “I’m the manager.”
“I thought your name was Shelley. The guy that owns this place is Nicolas Copernicus. Fake name if you ask me.”
“Shit.” The man whispered under his breath. At least he dropped her pajamas. “I used the name Shelley so you wouldn’t bother me when I moved in. So I have the right to be here.”
“No you don’t.” She planted her hands on her hips.
“I beg your pardon? This is my house. I don’t need permission to enter it.” His voice louder and the tone more not mad but irritated, as though he hated talking to people and this conversation had already gone on too long.
“Massachusetts Regulation 940 says you must give a tenant at least 24 hours before entry a residence unless it is an emergency.”
“Bloody fucking regulations. There was a leak.” His face contorted for a moment. If Charlie paid attention more, she would have realized he was in pain, but she was only concerned about him lying. About his name, about being there, about everything.
“There was a leak.” She made each word pointed. “… in my delicates drawer.”
He dropped his head and pushed past her. “I’m leaving.”
“Wait!” She called after him but he didn’t break his long stride to the front door. “I want to talk to you!” But the slamming of the front door and boots traveling down the stairs answered her plea instead.
Soon the basement door slammed, followed by the sound of feedback and music coming up through the floorboards. Charlie sulked for a moment before crouching down to pick up the bits of silk, satin and lace clothing on the floor.
“No respect.” she muttered before flopping onto the bed. The frame creaked as Charlie laid down onto the pile of pillows. At least five, not counting decorative ones. She closed her eyes and listened to the hum of whatever music, Shelley, or Nick, or whatever the hell his name was playing down there. Charlie had half a mind to stomp on the floor when a lightbulb went off.
“What a scathingly brilliant idea!” She grabbed her phone and scrolled until she found what she was looking for and headed off to take a shower before setting her plan into action later that night.

S Club 7 - “S Club Party” Now That's What I Call Music! 6 Song released in 1999. Compilation released in 2000. Pop
We love the overly transparent crass commercialism of the 90s and early 2000s, don’t we folks? S Club 7 were the bright-eyed and bushy-tailed septet of British teens and 20-somethings that were concocted in a lab and thrust upon hordes of impressionable tweens across the world. The story of S Club 7 is a rather gross one that consists of young and attractive, moderately talented people being taken advantage of by their manager and his company to churn out gobs of content without just compensation. If you’re an American of a certain age, you probably know a little something about S Club 7. Their ballad, 2000′s “Never Had a Dream Come True,” peaked at #10 and #8 on the Billboard Hot 100 and Billboard Mainstream Top 40, respectively. Two of S Club 7′s other biggest global hits, the Jackson 5-inspired “Bring It All Back” and “S Club Party” never charted in the US, but lots of Americans still seem to be familiar with them.
S Club 7 was the brainchild of Simon Fuller, one of history’s most successful music  managers, who had managed the Spice Girls. Fuller was known for manufacturing a bunch of British boy and girl bands throughout his career and, at the time, also managed Annie Lennox of the Eurythmics and athletes, too. After helping the Spice Girls skyrocket into global superstardom as a brand that sold itself on a gimmicky blend of “girl power” and quirky British-ness, Geri Halliwell (Ginger Spice) orchestrated his firing. Citing his unbearably controlling nature and his marketing schemes, the Girls decided to proceed without Fuller.
But the day after his firing, Fuller was back at it. This time, he decided he would start a new band, but rather than it being a boy band or a girl band, it would be a boy-and-girl band, modeled after an idea put forth by another British group, Steps. Steps are a quartet, and while they’ve achieved little to no success in the US, they have enjoyed wild success in Europe, especially in the UK. And they’re still around. After a five year hiatus that followed a twelve year hiatus, Steps released an album in 2017 that reached #2 on the UK charts.
But they weren’t a Fuller group. Fuller seemed to have the connections and gravitas that Steps’ managers didn’t. To start his new group, Fuller held an audition of an astonishing 10,000 people, which eventually was culled down to seven. These seven would then be formed into a group and be dubbed S Club 7. None of the members had known each other prior, but according to all the articles I could find, they hit it off and they all became close friends.
With this crop of kids, Fuller saw dollar (or pound or Euro) signs. S Club 7 were going to be way more than just a pop group; they were going to be a marketable brand. And to achieve that goal, the first thing they were going to do was not get into the recording studio, but instead shoot a fictional TV series to air on CBBC (Children’s BBC) to introduce themselves to British pre-teens. Each character would have their own personality, which would be loosely based on their true selves, and together the group’s adventures would strengthen their bond. And each episode would consist of a choreographed song performance, too. The first season, set in Miami, would depict the seven constantly being exploited by a seedy hotel manager and made to perform housekeeping duties.
Unfortunately, these fictional circumstances were loosely based on their own reality. Over twelve weeks of shooting in Miami, the group worked tirelessly for eighteen hours per day, and after a long day’s work, would have to take care of their own cooking and laundry. Fuller and his company, who were flush with cash, didn’t provide S Club 7 with any of these needed amenities. The S Club 7 TV series would become an immense hit in the UK and ended up being sold to 120 different countries. As a result, each group member pulled in 52,000 Euro; a total pittance compared to the total sum of all the TV contracts the show received.
Seven months after its UK debut, the S Club TV series would make its way stateside on kids’ TV purgatory, Fox Family. Formerly The Family Channel, which was founded by horrible and insane Christian shitbag grifter, Pat Robertson, it would be acquired by NewsCorp. Fox would control the network’s programming, save for some hours in which Robertson’s daily spoonful of Christian conservative nonsense, The 700 Club, would air. Admittedly, for a time, I was an avid viewer of Fox Family (except when 700 Club was on), but I’m pretty sure I was rare. Year after year, Fox Family would try to replenish its lineup with new shows to attract new viewers, but they failed to peel many eyes off of the likes of Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network, and the Disney Channel.
The release of the S Club TV series in the U.S. coincided with the group’s debut album. And maybe it was the fact that they only managed to get on Fox Family that led to them peaking at an unimpressive #112, but back home, they topped charts. The TV series-first formula more than paid off (for Fuller, though. Not so much for S Club 7). “Bring It All Back,” the group’s first single, which was released two months after the TV show’s debut, went to #1 in the UK. Its follow-up, “S Club Party” topped out at #2. And their debut album reached #2 as well.
And along with the TV show and the music came all the merchandise. Dolls, makeup, perfume, clothes, school supplies, a PC game, you name it. If there was an object that a kid could use, Fuller wanted it to bear the S Club name. There were also more seasons of TV and movies, too. And Fuller would reap great profits from all of it, but once again, S Club 7 saw minuscule returns from their name and likenesses being marketed and sold.
Fuller’s cartoonishly-evil-yet-real-life-record-executive persona became more than apparent during a meeting between he, S Club 7, and some of the members’ parents. Asking how they could receive such little compensation as Fuller and his company made millions off of their efforts, Fuller told the members that he could replace them on stage with cardboard cut-outs and it wouldn’t make a difference. Fuller would also be publicly shamed by a radio DJ when it was revealed that while the S Club kids were traveling the world and making him literally millions, he flew them in economy class. Only after his miserliness was made public did he bump them up to business class.
And although Fuller knew the right people to get his band spoonfed to British kids, it didn’t mean S Club’s songs were bad for what they were. They were well-produced bubblegum pop. Five songs on the debut album ended up being produced by a Norwegian duo called Stargate. Total unknowns at the time, Stargate went on to write or produce for some of the pop world’s most successful groups and artists, including Michael Jackson, Mariah Carey, Lionel Richie, Jessica Simpson, Britney Spears, Beyoncé, Rihanna, Selena Gomez, Janet Jackson, Shakira, Jennifer Lopez, Sam Smith, Mary J. Blige, Ne-Yo, Katy Perry, Coldplay, P!nk, Sia, Kylie Minogue, Carly Rae Jepsen, and Charli XCX. Throughout their careers, Stargate have managed to rack up a whopping seventeen Grammy noms, including four wins  But before building up that long list of accolades, they began with S Club 7.
The first single Stargate ever produced was “S Club Party”. A piece of sunny and breezy, anthemic kids’ pop, this song is a natural earworm. Underneath mostly loud and shouted vocals, Stargate weave a celebratory, feelgood g-funk whine throughout the choruses as a series of electro-funk synths and string and horn stabs predominate the rest. The first verse, sung solo by member Jo, proceeds from relative sparseness to an addition of hand claps and a simmering choir of backup vocals, before launching into the undeniably catchy chorus. The four female members soothe in unison as the boys contrast with revelrous chants. In the post-chorus, the girls get in on the chanting, too. The second verse, which packs more energy than the one that precedes it because it’s sung in unison, introduces each member of the group with a simple rhyme. Following the bridge, the song undergroes an unexpected key change, which raises the enjoyment, and as the song fades out, Bradley, the group’s lone black member, does some light scatting.
You know, Fuller admitted that since he was fired by the Spice Girls, there were some ideas he had had for them that he wasn’t able to use, and instead used for S Club 7. Maybe musically, he wasn’t quite finished with that g-funk infused pop sound. The Spice Girls’ “Say You’ll Be There” has that summery g-funk pool party vibe much like “S Club Party” does. Just a thought.
Here’s the music video, which shows the group transporting back to a California desert in 1959 to race a bunch of people. A choreographed song and dance seemingly materialize out of thin air, too: It comes from the movie they shot called Back to the ‘50s.
youtube
For the next few years, S Club 7 continued to release high-charting hit after high-charting hit in the UK, but in 2002, band member Paul decided to leave. This ultimately resulted in possibly the worst sentence ever written on Wikipedia:
Talking about his former musical venture three months before he left S Club 7, Paul Cattermole described his school nu metal band — called Skua— as having a "Limp Bizkit vibe" as well as comparing their style to Rage Against the Machine.
Wat.
Following Paul’s departure, S Club 7 shortened their name to S Club and continued to make hits. However, their star was clearly fading, and in 2003, they agreed to a mutual split. In 2008, some of the members got back together and formed S Club 3. In 2014, they expanded by a member and became S Club Party. Eight months after that, all seven members regrouped for a reunion tour to cash in on some nostalgia. Needless to say, Simon Fuller was involved, and hopefully, the contracts weren’t as exploitative this time around. In the meantime, Fuller would continue unabated, amassing management deals with the likes of Carrie Underwood, Amy Winehouse, and Kelly Clarkson. In 2001, he launched Pop Idol, which would be imported to the States as American Idol.
Now you know more than you thought you’d ever know about S Club 7. It’s tragic how Fuller treated them, but the group is responsible for some great turn-of-the-millennium pop hits, despite how manufactured and seemingly preordained their success was. Oh well, we can’t help what we listened to when we were kids and nostalgia has a way of making us love things we definitely wouldn’t as adults. Nothing wrong with coming to terms and embracing that fact.
Stay the fuck inside you freaks.

bed hair from a permanent state of slumber, calloused fingertips from strumming bass into the early hours and djing into the blacklit night, self-help books thumbed once and thrown beneath your bed, battered copies of choose your own adventure books, spliffs passed half-arsed across rooftops while light pollution obscures low-hanging stars, marxist literature in stacks against your bedroom walls, a burner phone twice-shattered and a stash of replacement sim cards.
tw ocd, anxiety, drugs
half-swedish, half-british. the swedish is on his mother’s side. he’s bilingual but thinks in english. only really speaks swedish around his mother. only child, and kinda put a lot of pressure on himself to be the perfect kid when he was young, but his parents are honestly, quite decent? and just want him to have a nice life, they don’t care if he isn’t successful or rich or anything, they’re honestly rather solid. (wow imagine having nice parents, a first for all my characters, im literally this meme)
grew up in peckham, a suburb of london. growing up, his mum was a model / actress / waitress who later retrained as a speech therapist and his dad worked in her majesty’s service at buckingham palace. his dad wasn’t allowed to tell his family what his job entailed but rory suspects it’s probably very boring and just involves a lot of…. logistics n security.
was bullied a lot at school. [cole sprouse voice] he didn’t fit in and he didn’t want to fit in. unironically wore a trenchcoat to school every day of his life. spent most of his lunchtimes in the library because it was his safe space. as a result he knows…. loads of useless information because 30% of his school years were spent reading anthologies on space and the vikings etc. would be good on a game show. obsessively recorded every episode of university challenge as a child.
middle-class and lowkey quite wealthy but rarely talks about money, one of those well-off people who still wears really old shitty shoes and only spends money if they absolutely have to
virgin who can’t drive
into star wars, not into the big bang theory. feminist. can’t watch horror movies
favourite film is where the wild things are. also loves the florida project. thinks kids are the sweetest thing and can’t wait to be a dad to some
has been musical for as long as they can remember. first picked up guitar because he thought it would make this girl esther who he was in love with like him, but he just ended up falling in love with music instead.
formulated several different bands as a kid but ultimately had to give it up cos he was quite controlling and got fixated on making a certain sound so it wasn’t really fun for the others. got into electronic music because it was something he could do basically on his own and keep tweaking until he got it perfect
always drumming their fingers or strumming invisible guitar strings. tends to avoid parties bc he has quite has specific tastes when it comes to music and doesn’t like listening to r&b for eight hours while people throw up into plastic cups.
a techno connoisseur. has been making electronic music since he was about twelve.
after his parents divorce, when he was fourteen, rory & his mother moved to run-down suburban neighbourhood, pittsfield, massachussets.
big into photography. he mostly uses a canon 35mm camera, but occasionally uses disposable ones when he wants that more rustic feel.
moving to the states, their photography became more focused on suburban neighborhoods and are often quite dark and cinematic (think gregory crewsden). here are some shots of pittsfield i really like which rory has on his wall [1] [2] [3]
falls in love 12 times a day. never had a girlfriend or boyfriend. gets sweaty when someone cute looks at him. flirting?? what?? would prefer to idealise them from a distance
gender??? hm. rory don’t really know where they fit yet, sometimes he feels like a guy and sometimes they dont feel like anything at all!! slippin out of his physical form into the spirit realm! isn’t really bothered, cos they think it’s a social construct anyway. uses he/they pronouns interchangeably, but currently feels like ‘he’ is more fitting. won’t necessarily pull anyone up on it cos he knows having an identity that’s constantly…. in flux.. can be annoying for others … and doesn’t want to be a burden even tho it isn’t at all?? rory internalises guilt
everything is socially constructed. mirrors let you move through time. the whole thing’s a metaphor. he thinks he’s got free will but really he’s trapped in a maze. in a system. all he can do is consume. people think it’s a happy game. it’s not a happy game — it’s a fucking nightmare world, and the worst thing is, it’s real and we live in it!!!!
has ocd. tries to let it affect his life as little as possible, but obviously it’s incredibly hard to control a compulsive disorder. was teased for it at school when other kids started to notice. he was obsessed with the number five, would wash his hands five times, count stairs i groups of five, he could only use the corridors in one direction and always had to keep his hands busy. it manifests itself in hyper-fixations (trains when he was a child – specifically steam engines – then later he became obsessed with space and the patterns of constellations, and now he’s obsessed with synthesizers) and repetitive behaviours like counting stairs. doesn’t really affect his social life at all, he can jst get a bit locked-on n hyper-focused sometimes.
has insomnia. barely ever sleeps. finds it hard to switch off from work / writing / gaming / whatever’s preoccupying him in that moment. he’s always awake at 5am and quite often sleeps in through classes but still gets really good grades because he’s very good at his course. rarely attends classes. prefers to work independently. doesn’t really trust his tutors are intelligent enough to be teaching him, and is particularly suspicious of the lockwood tutors. a music snob tbh
occasionally deals weed n pills when strapped for cash, but only 2 ppl he knows, and on a very small scale grass-roots level!! (so its ok???) rollerskates around campus dealing cos they dnt have a car. we love to see it
aesthetics: bed hair from a permanent state of slumber, calloused fingertips from strumming bass into the early hours and drumming into blacklit night, self-help books thumbed once and thrown beneath your bed, watching vine compilations until your eyes turn square, battered copies of choose your own adventure books, spliffs passed half-arsed across rooftops while light pollution obscures low-hanging stars
likes: techno, the webpage cats on synthesizers in space, allen ginsberg, vintage gramophones,  floating points, lcd soundsystem, marijuana, soft dogs that let you pet them, late-night strolls talking about the universe, independent films, cigarettes, herbal tea, gallows humour, long showers, brown eyes, tchaikovsky, dr. seuss, constellations, photography, late night jazz, vintage game boys and girls who could rip his still-beating heart out of his chest and use it as an ashtray. dislikes:  weddings, funerals, formality, button-up shirts that people actually button-up, bananas, hot coffee, social media, people who watch and play sports, rap music – especially of the misogynistic variety, indie wankers in wire-framed glasses that play ed sheeran songs at open mic nights.
plot ! with ! me ! i’d say all the usual “exes fwb hookups spiel” but rory… has never hooked up with anyone… i feel like a deer in the headlights of love……. so give me
study buddies,
people who are also into techno and are music snobs about it,
people who love all kinds of music,
people who are in bands that maybe rory’s recorded and produced stuff for,
people he actually jams with (he plays bass and synth),
unrequited crushes!!
actually i think rory had sex w delilah in the last version of this rp so if u want a hook up plot its possible just unlikely. they’d hav 2 be the driving force i reckon cos rory doesn’t really act on impulses like desire or anythin.... jst bottles that shit up !!! but yea we could do a spicy hook up plot maybs, depending on the person
someone they met at a knitting club in freshman year and have remained friends with despite no longer going to it
people rory knows from open mic nights and gigs
library girlfriends / boyfriends that he stares at longingly while paging through leatherbound volumes

CHARLIE
"I think that I should just cancel, it's not like I can even play," Sam stated.
He was lying on the lounge, the same place he had been all week. Not that I blamed him, he couldn't go to work and it's not like he could do much else, but he had fallen into a depressed state and that wasn't allowed to happen. Sam is always positive and happy, even if the rest of us weren't.
"Get dressed," I stated.
"Why?" he sighed.
"Because I think you need to go,"
"So I can stand there and watch everyone else play?"
"I'm pretty sure Haka wants your voice in his band, besides I think it would be good for you to be able to be a part of music while you're waiting to play,"
"His name is Leo,"
"Just get dressed, what's the worse that could happen? You decide you don't want to?" I challenged. He let out another sighed getting up.
"Fine,"
"Be quick about it, I've got dance rehearsal tonight,"
"You've had dance rehearsal every night this week," he retorted.
"Because I have a show tomorrow," I shot back.
I've also had the past two weeks off from the dance company because of the douche trio and their antics. I felt like I was behind, even if I was told I didn't have to come in ever night.
SAM
"This is where he lives?" Charlie frowned.
"It's the address he gave me," I shrugged.
"How exactly does he afford this place?"
"I'm pretty sure he and his friend own it,"
"He owns it? But he looks like a gypsy. I was expecting a bus,"
"I think his family is loaded,"
"Of course," she rolled her eyes.
She had a, not so secret, disdain for trust fund kids. Mostly because they have money they don't have to work for, but Leo was different, he was actually trying to work towards his dream, he just had the luxury of having the cushion cash flow while he did so.
Leo came through the white gate and open the larger white gate to let us up the driveway. He smiled and waited for us to get out of the car.
"How's the shoulder?" was the first thing he said.
"It's nice to see you too Haka," Charlie frowned at him disapprovingly.
"I see Thea is making sure my new nickname is catching on,"
"You are the one who performed the haka in the middle of a bar," I pointed out.
"This is true," he nodded
"So where is this band room?" Charlie asked.
"Follow me," he gestured.
We followed him back through the small white gate which led into the backyard. There was a stepping stone path that forked out leading to the house and what looked to be the garage. In this back corner of the yard was a school bus, I withheld my laugh as Charlie pointed to it giving me an 'I told you so' look.
We turned towards the garage which looked longer than it needed to be. Once we'd followed him through the side door I realised that there was a wall through the centre dividing it into two spaces. We walked through the garage section which was big enough for three cars but only sat one. He led us through another door which brought us to the band room.
"Charlie, Sam, this is Jeff and Dylan," he introduced.
THEA
"I need 5 kilos of potatoes peels, 3 kilos of carrots peeled and diced, and a kilo of onions diced," the head chef stated pointing at each of us as he listed the prep items.
"Yes chef," we stated in unison.
He left to give other students instructions. Cory started on the carrots, Benji took the onions, and I was awarded with peeling 5 kilos of potatoes. Technically I didn't even have to be here, but I like taking the extra days just in case something happens and I have to miss a day. Benji and Cory were just behind.
"So, how are talks with that guy going?" Benji wiggled his eyebrows at me.
"We are actually going out to lunch tomorrow," I nodded.
"Want us to come?" Cory offered.
"No, I'm an adult I can go on a date without back up," I frowned.
"Charlie's going with you isn't she?" Benji stated.
"Yes," I mumbled.
"You're so predictable," Cory shook his head at me.
"Whatever," I rolled my eyes.
"On another note, how are the birthday plans going?"
"Don't even go there," I sighed shaking my head.
"Not well?"
"There are so many people coming and so much food to make, I swear I'm going to spend most of the night cooking, I miss my mum," I whined.
"Are your parents coming down for it?"
"They can't get time off," I shook my head.
"What about your brother?"
"Nope," I cleared my throat.
It wasn't really unusual since they move up north I haven't seen them much, maybe once or twice a year, if I'm lucky. And never on my birthday, is usually the busiest time for them because it's so close to Christmas. But it still sucked, I miss them normally, but even more so on my birthday.
"Well we'll be there," Cory nudged my shoulder with his.
"I'm sure we can be as annoying at your brother," Benji smirked, tears starting to fall from his eyes.
"Awe, bro, are you getting emotional?" Cory teased.
"It's just so sad," he fake sobbed.
"Chef is going to tell you off if you don't stop," I shook my head.
"He's busy giving out tasks," Cory shrugged.
"Thea is right, I'm okay with you guys taking but you need to be serious, especially around knives," Chef was standing behind us arms crossed over his chest.
"Yes chef," Benji nodded.
"Told you," I mumbled.
CHARLIE
He wasn't sure, he was definitely reluctant about standing in front of a microphone stand without a guitar. He was fidgety, probably because he's not used to having his hands empty. He looked at me and seemed to calm down a bit, taking a deep breath he nodded at Haka who started to play a melody, Jeff and Dylan joined in and a few seconds later Sam started to sing.
It didn't take him long to fee his comfortable, his hands were on the microphone stand, fingers tapping along to the beat. He even smiled, this was definitely something he should be doing, not just while he's waiting for his shoulder to heal.
"So what do you think?" Haka asked the room, he was already sure he wanted Sam to join the band.
"Good," Jeff nodded, Dylan agreed. The spoke in broken English and it was honestly so cute.
"Sam?" he asked hopeful.
"It was fun," he nodded still unsure.
"So are you joining our band?"
"I have to think about it a little more," he shrugged.
"Okay," Haka nodded disappointedly.
"We have to go to the hospital for a check-up, but I'll call you when I decide," Sam stated. His appointment wasn't for another hour an a half but I didn't say anything, it was clear he wanted to leave which just confused me.
SAM
It was fun, and I enjoyed it until I realised how much I already missed playing guitar. It was like being hit by a bus, and I just wanted to leave.
"Oh, okay," Leo nodded confused.
He offered us something to eat before we left but I really just wanted to get out of here, I felt like I couldn't breathe. It took all I had to not run to the car, Charlie followed behind me with a concerned look plastered on her face.
"What's wrong?" she frowned as we pulled out of his driveway.
"Nothing," I shook my head, I felt really stupid.
"Right," she raised an eyebrow. I sighed.
"I didn't think it would be that hard to not play guitar, I felt like I was suffocating,"
"Playing guitar as always been your outlet, it's how you vent and you haven't been able to do that so you've been bottling everything. It's no wonder you felt that way," she stated.
"I guess,"
"You just need a new outlet,"
"Like what?"
"Why don't you start writing music again? Your new band is going to need original songs," she hinted.
"You think I should join?"
"Yes,"
"Because it will stop me from moping on your couch?"
"No, because you enjoyed it because it's something that I think you suit and works for you,"
"But also the couch thing," she smirked.
"So what now?"
"I don't know, your appointment isn't for another hour or so," she shrugged.
"Food?"
"I know this great cafe,"
BM
"Hey, there brother of mine," Coco walked through the door.
"How was your time down south?" I asked not looking up from my clipboard.
"12, 7, 42, 69," Jae laughed.
He had been sprouting out random numbers for the last 10 minutes because I was doing stocktake and writing up the new order. He thought it would be fun to see how many times he could make me restart counting. So far, I'd had to start again twice.
"It was fun, sorry we stayed longer than planned, you didn't need my help here did you?"
"Nope, if I opened this place on the condition of you help then I would be a little screwed what with your job involving a lot of travel,"
"Right, so how is Sam?"
"He's okay, in a bit of a self-pity state, he's been sitting on the girls' lounge for the past week. He hasn't been up for much so,"
"He was supposed to have band practice today, I'm not sure he went through," Jae shrugged before continuing with counting.
"Bro, would you shut up?" I frowned.
"Did you screw up again?" He smirked.
"Can you go and distract him or something, I need to get this done," I sighed.
"Why don't I do that? You're irritable and likely to make a mistake," she slid the clipboard towards her.
"You think you can block him out?"
"I've spent half of my life blocking him out," she commented, I frowned.
"What? He's super irritating," she shrugged.
CHARLIE
I parked the car and we walked into the cafe. Skye who was behind the counter smiled up at me she was new and really only got called into work when me or Jae couldn't come in.
"Hey, I thought you worked this morning,"
"I did, we were just in the area and thought we would stop by for a coffee," I shrugged.
"Do you want to make it?" she asked.
"Sure," I nodded as Whitney walked through the door.
"Oh thank god," she sighed when she saw me.
"Is your boss being a pain?" I raised an eyebrow.
"He was fine this morning, then we had a double booking with important meetings because he has temporary receptionists, it was a mess and he couldn't even have coffee because you finish at 12," she vented.
"Do you want me to make a few?"
"Yes," she nodded.
"I can do it," Skye smiled, I think she was trying to help.
"It's fine," I shook my head.
"But you're not supposed to be working," she frowned.
"My boss won't drink the coffee unless it's made by her," Whitney shrugged.
"Then why did you come in, know she had finished her shift?"
"Because the coffee cake you guys have he loves, so I figured if he couldn't have coffee, the cake would be a fair substitute,"
"Guess who makes the coffee cake," I smirked.
"You're like some kind of coffee wizard," she laughed.
"Not really," I shook my head.
"Is it weird that I know your work schedule?" she laughed to herself.
"I think is weird that your boss only drinks my coffee," I shrugged.
"Oh I'm so sorry, can I get you anything?" Skye asked Sam who had sat in one of the waiting chairs.
"I've got it," I shook my head.
"Oh he's your boyfriend?" she raised an eyebrow. She had flirty eyes, I didn't like it, so instead of saying no.
"Yes," I stated seriously giving her a warning look. She backed down pretty quickly.
"I didn't think you had a boyfriend," Whitney hummed.
"Now you know, how many coffees do you want?"
"Can I have 3, no wait, four,"
"It's 2 in the afternoon, what does he need with four coffees?"
"He has to stay late to get stuff done, he has plans tomorrow and can't come I to the office," she shrugged.
"It must be nice having your own business and deciding when to work or not," I commented.
"I'm pretty sure he's going on a date his friend is setting him up,"
"Maybe he'll get laid and be less high strung"
"Here's hoping," she laughed.
"How about I get you some coffee cake too?"
"I love you," she laughed.
THEA
Sam and Charlie still weren't home at 6.30 so I was guessing that Charlie had just taken him with her to dance practice. I still hadn't asked her about coming to lunch but I was pretty sure I knew how I could get her there without actually asking g. She probably wouldn't be happy about it but from the photos I've seen of Mark, she'll be fine with it after a while.
It was almost 9 when o started cooking dinner. She would have finished practice at nine and it only takes about half an hour to drive from there to here.
I decided o making fried rice because it took a while to make and also Sam loves rice so I k ow he would eat it. He's been a little off food lately which for Sam is really weird but I guess with everything he's been through lately is a little expected.
He had been staying with us since his surgery because for starters is more sanitary here, and the boys would be any help with changing Sam's dressing, they would try but they would just mess around or be grossed out by it. Also, there was no way Charlie was going to let him out of her sights for a while. The other two tried to stay here too, but she just kicked them out.
"I smell rice," Sam exhaled as he walked through the door, followed by Charlie. Volk bolted down the hallway, instead of jumping up like he normally does he nudge his head against Sam's hand like he knew Sam was injured.
"Yes you do," I nodded turning the stove off.
"Great, I'm starving," he picked up a bowl.
"How did practice go?" I asked casually, he sort of shrugged but didn't actually answer. I looked over at Charlie who just shook her head as if to tell me to let it go.
"Do you want some?" I asked her.
"Do we have seaweed?" she raised an eyebrow.
"Duh," I waved the snack packets in the air.
"Then yes," she nodded.
I waited until we were sitting in the lounge room eating before I mentioned anything. That way it came out more casual and she wouldn't think that I was up to something.
"You have your dance show tomorrow night huh?"
"Yep,"
"What time do you have to be there?"
"5, why?" She frowned.
"I was just thinking that after the past few weeks we've had we could have a bit of a girls day, we could go see Kiwoo and get out hair done, you could get your nails done, maybe a bit of shopping and some food?"
"Don't call it a girls day," she shook her head.
"Dudes day?"
"It would save me having to do my hair and makeup," she nodded.
"And if you don't want to wear your stage outfit then you can just bring it I your bag," I shrugged.
"That would mean carrying a bag. Pass. But sure," she nodded.
"So we'll leave here at about 12 tomorrow?" I suggested.
"What am I supposed to do?" Sam frowned.
"We can drop you off at the bar?" I shrugged.
"Or at Haka's," Charlie mumbled.
"You really think I should do it?" He sighed.
"Yes, I do,"
"I'll think about it," he sighed.
SAM
"Can you guys drop me off at the bar on your way?" I asked.
"Sure," Charlie walked out of her room dressed in a fishnet bodysuit under a cropped top and short that wear barely visible under the shirt she had tied around her waist. Like, Damn. I mean she is always attractive, but when she is stage ready, I mean, wow.
     "Ready to go?" Thea followed.
"You're pretty dressed up for a girls day," I commented.
"What's the point in getting your hair and makeup done just to be wearing g shabby clothes?" She raised an eyebrow.
"Point taken," I nodded.
"Let's go," She chirped.
The dropped me off, asked me the usual motherly questions, well Thea did. Charlie just told me not to do anything stupid.
BM was stocking the shelves when I walked in, he seemed a little surprised to see me.
"Hey man, how did you get here?" He frowned.
"The girls dropped me off, they're heading I to Perth for a girls day," I shrugged.
"Sure they are," he laughed nodding.
"Seriously, that's what they're doing,"
"That's what Thea told Charlie they're doing,"
"I'm confused,"
"Thea is having lunch with that guy she's been talking too and she didn't want to go along e but she figured Charlie would just say no, this a girls day," he explained.
"Won't Charlie feel a little third wheeled?"
"He is bringing a friend too, but we all know how Charlie feels about being forced into something,"
"She gone be mad," Jae walked down the stairs.
"Should we text her?"
"She won't get it, she has a dance show today," Jae stated.
Charlie generally ignored all calls and texts when she had a show, mainly so she couldn't be called into work or something. If there was something important they would have Thea's number.
"I feel bad for the guy that has to deal with her," BM smirked.
"She's not that bad," I frowned.
"Are you kidding me? Not only is she being forced into something, shes being tricked into being forced. The attitude that guy is going to get,"
"And I bet you she is in her stage outfit because she's too stubborn to carry a bag," Jae stated.
It hadn't registered in my head that she was wearing her stage outfit, which wasn't really too different from what she normally wears, but she was showing more.
"What does that have to do with anything?" I frowned.
"Nothing really," he shrugged.
"Stop stirring the pot," BM shook his head.
"What?" Jae raised an eyebrow.
"So what brings you home?" BM turned to me.
"I just thought I would come and hang,"
"Right,"
"My lyric books are here," I said as I headed upstairs.
They were in a box under my bed, I had never been so glass to have a loft style bed. I slid the box over to the sitting area, also under my bed, and sat down.
CHARLIE
"Bitch, did you get a new job?" Eddy raised an eyebrow at me when we walked in.
"What are you trying to say?" He just pulled a face.
"She has a dance show tonight," Thea stated.
"No kidding," he laughed.
"Seriously?" Thea sighed.
"What?"
"Your friend is here," she pointed at Yuri.
"Why are you surprised?" I raised an eyebrow.
Yuri was best friends with MinSung, who also happened to be dating Kiwoo. Yuri noticed us as smirked walking over. Thea let out another sigh, she still wasn't over that face that he had slept with us both.
"Hey girls," he winked.
"Hey," I nodded.
"Yuri," Thea stated before walking away, he just let out a slight laugh.
"What brings you here?" He asked.
"What do you think?
"Dance show?" He raised an eyebrow looking me up and down.
"Yeah,"
"Maybe I should come," he shrugged.
"Hey," MinSung joined us.
"Hey," I nodded.
"You kind of look like a hooker,"
"And you're dressed kind of like a dick,"
"Oh, actually he is a dick," Yuri smirked.
"Charlie," Kiwoo smiled.
"Hey,"
"You two aren't bothering my clients are you?"
"Not just dressed like one then," Minsung joked.
"Shut up," I frowned.
THEA
"Go have lunch and get out of my salon," Kiwoo ushered them out.
"See you at home babe," Minsung kissed him.
"Where is mine?" Yuri puckered.
"You already had him once. He's mine now," Kiwoo playfully glared at him.
"You got told," I smirked.
"Yuri is kind of like you, he has slept with everyone," Charlie stated.
"Hey, we are nothing alike, besides Minsung has slept with more people in this room,"
"Not true, Yuri as slept with everyone we know in here except Kiwoo," she corrected me.
"Seriously?" I frowned at Eddy.
"Bitch, don't you come for me. You've seen him," he rolled his eyes.
"Yeah," I nodded.
"So what are we doing today?"
"I want something different, I don't know what but you know me," I shrugged.
"And you?"
"Colour fix, makeup and maybe my nails,"
"Let's get started,"

Chapter 9 -- Perfect Harmony | Charlie Gillespie

Chapter nine
~|Emily Fox|~
I still can’t believe what’s been happening between Charlie and me. For the first time in a really long time, I’ve been able to tell someone about Uncle Robert without feeling like I’m a burden or they don’t understand what I’ve been through. With Charlie though, I feel as though a weight is lifted from my shoulders because he took some of the weight away from me. He made me feel understood, respected, important. The warm and fuzzy feeling erupts in my body every time I think about it. My heart bursts from happiness every time I think about it. Especially about the almost-kiss that happened last night. “Someone’s in a good mood,” Uncle Mitch, who’s eating breakfast at the kitchen table, notices when I walk down the stairs on Wednesday morning, dancing to the song playing in my head. Which, I’m not going to lie, is part of the song Charlie and I wrote together last night.   “Oh, uhm… I guess it’s because I’m hanging out with Madi after school,” I shrug, not wanting to tell him the whole truth. I’m happy I get to hang out with Madison again, but I’m not going to pretend I wouldn’t rather spend more time with Charlie than spend my time thinking about him. “Right, not because the cute boy from the Music Store,” he mumbles it under his breath, but I hear it loud and clear. I feel my cheeks heat up, and have to hide my face from Uncle Mitch, so he doesn’t see. “I knew it! Okay, tell me everything!” With the cheekiest smile on his face, he props his head up on his hand, blinking up at me. “I really got to run, Uncle Mitch…” I try, but he checks his watch to see that I still got plenty of time left. “Right…” I sit down on the opposite side and cough once, trying to figure out where to start and what he already knows. “So, he and his band performed at the Open Mic Night at the Music Store on Saturday, right? And they performed this super amazing song and I tried to refrain myself from dancing and be impartial about it, you know? Playing it cool and stuff,” Uncle Mitch chuckles at that, nodding his head in agreement, “And then he came to see me afterwards and I told him not to be a stranger when he left the store. So, then Monday and yesterday, he came to the store. On Monday, I asked him to help me with my song…” Uncle Mitch’s eyes widen in delight, “And then he asked why I wouldn’t write with anyone else since we’ve basically created a masterpiece.” “What did you tell him?” he asks. “I told him the truth. I told him I used to write with Uncle Bobby, the one who taught me everything I know about music and that he passed away last year. Normally, people just tell me to move on because it’s been so long, but Charlie didn’t. He just listened to me and told me he understood. He said he’d wait for me until I’m ready to write songs with somebody else.” Mitch’s smile widens, and I can even see a single tear roll down his cheek. I can’t say whether it’s from pride, happiness, sadness or something else, though. “I’m so glad you finally told him, Muffin! I think you really got a good one with him.” My heart fills with the same warmth it did when Charlie told me he understood. Charlie really is a good egg. Might have to keep him close. “So, did you kiss him yet?” The question startles me, not expecting him to ask that specific question. “What? No! We’re just friends!” I may sound a tad too defensive. But what happened last night is something I’d much rather keep to myself. Not because I’m ashamed it happened, because I am not. At all. I want to keep it to myself, so it’s just something between Charlie and me. A secret. Something only we know. Something we can sulk in and just think about forever without anyone meddling. “You so have kissed him!” He sounds like an excited toddler on Christmas morning. “No, Mitchell, I have not.” Using full names will always be my favorite thing to show annoyance. Especially when they give you that startled look. And especially when they know why you use full names. “Don’t ‘No Mitchell’ me, young woman!” He points at me sternly and tries to keep up the severe expression, but a small smile tugs at his lips because Uncle Mitch can never be angry with me. “Now get to school!” I salute him, grab my backpack and start to leave the kitchen. “Hey!” his voice makes me turn around again, “I’m really glad to see you shining like this again, Muffin. You seem more alive since meeting that boy.” I can’t fight the smile tugging at my lips, so I don’t. “Thanks, Mitchy,” he offers me a wide smile, “I love you.” “I love you too, Muffin. Have fun at school.” “Yeah, you too!” Uncle Mitch is a marketing teacher at a college in Los Angeles. Sometimes, I do wish he’d teach high school and teach at Los Feliz High School instead. It would mean we could spend even more time together than we already do. It would also mean really awkward moments for the both of us. So, maybe it’s better the way it is. Just maybe.
After school, Madison and I head to her house to hang out for a while. To say I’m excited about it is an understatement, but I’m even more excited to see Charlie at the store later tonight.
“Hey, I have to close the store again tonight, so I can only hang out until like six.”
“Again? Gee, that girl is really exploiting you,” Madison comments as she plops down onto the bed on her stomach. “What do you want to do?” I think about it for a second. We should probably do the sensible thing and study, but knowing Madison, that probably won’t happen.
“Can we study Spanish for a moment? I’ve got a test tomorrow and with work tonight, I won’t be able to study for it enough.” Madison groans loudly, turning on her bed so she’s on her back.
“I thought we were going to do something fun?”
“You’re Puerto Rican, Spanish is your second language,” I point out to her, hoping it would convince her to help me. The look on her face doesn’t tell me good news. “Please, Mads? I really need to do well on this test or Uncle Mitch will tell me to quit my job.”
“Which will affect your love life, right. Fair enough.” Her mouth goes so fast I barely realize what she’d said until I’ve mulled it over in my head.
“My job doesn’t affect my love life, Madison.” She raises an eyebrow at me, and I’m left wondering whether it’s because of what I said or because of the full name-usage.
“Your dream boy is at the Music Store every single day. If you stop working there, you will never see him again. So, yes, it’s going to affect your love life.”
“Charlie is not my dream boy,” I blurt out whilst grabbing my Spanish textbook from my backpack. The silence in the room is agonizing and I’m not even sure why it’s quiet.
“Uhm, yes, he is. I can tell how your eyes sparkle when you’re talking about him or music or writing music with him and I caught you staring at his Instagram on more than one occasion.” I can’t believe I’ve been this imprudent with the whole Charlie thing. Of course Madi would know. She knows who I like way before I actually like them.
“Can we just get to Spanish now, please?” Madison rolls her eyes, an amused expression on her face. “Don’t roll your eyes at me!” I chuckle, and now, so does Madison. As I climb onto the bed with her, she adjusts her own position, so she can read along with me in my textbook.
For an hour or so, we study Spanish. Madison asks me questions, queries my vocabulary, and corrects me if I’m wrong. And so, by six, I’m sufficiently prepared for my test tomorrow, and ready to go and see Charlie. Which I’m most excited about, obviously.
“Say hi to Dream Boy!” Madison yells when she lets me out of the house. I turn around to reply something, but she’s already gone back inside and closed the door.
“He’s not my dream boy…” I mutter to myself, not entirely sure if I’m lying or not. Charlie is amazing. He’s brought out a side in me I hadn’t yet found. A love for songwriting with other people again. A love for music again.
“Hey, Emily!” The familiar voice makes me jump out of my thoughts. Beautiful thoughts. About Charlie. But then reality comes in and it’s even more beautiful because Charlie’s right there. He’d just arrived at the store too.
“Oh, hi, Charlie,” I greet back and open the door to walk in with Charlie in tow. “Did you finish your song yet?” I ask while making my way to the cash register to dump my stuff there and greet Ash, so she can leave.
“Almost! We’re just tweaking it a bit, rehearsing it with the band and stuff,” he replies, having picked up his guitar on the way to the counter. “What about your song? I’m really excited to hear.” I can’t help the smile tugging at my lips.
“See you, Emily, Charlie!” Ash waves quickly before dipping out of the store and leaving us alone. That’s when I realize we really are alone. Just like yesterday.
“Uhm, yeah. Almost. I think I might have it by the end of the week. I’m kind of struggling with some things still, but I’ll be fine.” He softly strums his guitar while keeping his eyes on me.
“Will I be the first one to hear it when it’s finished?” he asks.
“Uhm, yeah. Yeah, definitely,” I reply. My body’s heating up entirely from the way he’s looking at me, and it’s making me fidgety, so I start sorting through some of the invoices from today.
“I kind of want to keep
Finally Free
for when you decide to join the band…” he tells me, and I halt my actions to look up at him again. Bad idea. Abort.
“That’s nice, Charlie, but I really don’t know my answer yet.”
“No, yeah, I know. Just… Want to keep that song safe for if you do.” He offers me a wide smile. “Shall I start polishing guitars now?” he points to the other guitars on the wall.
“I’d rather you play some songs for me,” he looks at me, surprised. “Please?” He plays a couple of chords again, a soft melody filling up the entire space and my heart.
“I don’t have any lyrics for this one yet, but I came up with this killer melody last night with the boys.” I bite my lip listening to it, trying to focus on the melody and not him.
“How are the boys, by the way?” I change the subject, hoping it’ll keep me from concentrating too much on him. And his biceps – he’s wearing one of those muscle tanks again that show off his arms very nicely. Or his cute smile. Or his pretty eyes.
“They’re fine… Just Jeremy and Owen, you know? We had a couple of band practices and we’re doing okay; I think.” He doesn’t stop playing that same melody over and over again, and I really wish he wasn’t.
“Why don’t you have a rehearsal here?” I suggest. I genuinely want to see the boys again. They’re fun to be around. “I work the entire day Saturday, so you could come at closing, play a few songs while I clean up and stuff?” Charlie abruptly stops playing, his eyes turning sad, his lips forming a pout.
“Is it because you’re sick of me?” I blink a couple of times, startled at the question.
“What? No!” I hope I sound confused and not defensive or sarcastic. “No, I love spending time with you. But I really do like Owen and Jeremy, and I love your music, so…” I trail off a little to find him smiling his wide, bright smile again. “It’s a win-win?”
“More like a win-win-win, I think,” he says. I tilt my head a little in confusion. “You win because you’ve got good music to clean up to. The band wins because we’re allowed to practice in a music store that has amazing equipment. And I win…” he moves closer to me. Only the counter is between us now. “Because I get to spend time with you.” I swallow a lump in my throat. He’s standing so close to me. Albeit, not as close as he was last night. But still. Very close.
“Right…” I mutter and let out a chuckle, “A triple win it is then.” Charlie’s smile widens and my heart just swells. How can a human I despised for like a few hours turn into the most adorable freaking human being alive? Everything he does either makes me smile or blush or makes my heart just swell.
“Triple Win could be our new band name,” Charlie suggests. I look up at him, just to check if he’s serious about it. When he nonchalantly hops onto the free part of the counter, nearly knocking me in the head with his guitar and sitting on part of my invoices I’m still sorting because Ash is a mess, I realize he’s actually serious.
“Triple Win is not a good band name, Charlie,” I chuckle and tear the invoices from underneath his ass, “It just doesn’t make sense if there are four of us.” Charlie’s eyes widen and mine do too. I probably shouldn’t have said that. Now he’ll get his hopes up that I’ll actually join the band. “You know,
if
I ever do join the band.”
“Oh, right,” his smile falters, “Sunset Curve is way better.” The smile’s back. I chuckle at his comment, but don’t say anything. I can’t really argue with it anyway.
“Can you get your ass off my invoices now, please, Charles?” His eyebrows furrow and his smile fades away slowly. Probably shouldn’t ironically use his full name either. But I still like to mess with him a little. Without saying another word, he jumps off the counter and, while strumming his guitar, walks over to the piano to go and sit over there.
“What are you doing anyway?” he questions, nodding at the papers in my frustrated hands.
“Trying to put this invoices in order of purchase. You know, from 9am this morning until fifteen minutes ago, but Ashlynn’s handwriting is terrible, and I can’t make anything of some of these.” This makes him get up again, but this time he leaves his guitar at the piano, and he walks up to me. Even though we both know it’s not allowed, Charlie comes to stand behind me at the counter, leaning his hand onto the countertop, hovering over my shoulder.
“I have terrible handwriting too, I might be able to decode this,” he tells me when I suddenly tense up entirely. “This one’s from 2:26pm,” he says, pointing to the paper in my hands.
“I did not make a two out of either of those numbers.” He chuckles. I can feel him breathe behind me since his chest is pressed against my back, and I must try my best not to turn my head to look at him. If I do, our faces will be as close as they were yesterday, and I’ll want to kiss him.
For about an hour, Charlie and I sort through the invoices together until they’re finally in the right order and I can put them safely in the blue folder where they belong.
“Thanks for helping with that, Charlie. I could not have done that by myself,” I say and turn my head to look at him, thinking he’ll have taken a step back by now. He hasn’t. This was a terrible idea.
Abort. Abort. Abort.
We’re standing so close, my nose brushes against his cheek, causing him to look down and now we’re just staring at each other. My mind is running lapses, panicking about what to do. Abort mission or give in and kiss him? Whilst my mind is busy going over the possibilities and consequences, my heart is thumping out of my chest.
“I think you would, it would’ve just taken ages,” he mumbles. His voice comes out in a rasp, making my toes curl up. “But you’re welcome.” He turns ever so slightly, standing more next to me than behind me, and his eyes flutter close.
Abort. Abort. Abort.
“I got to… Uhm…” I say, but I’m not sure if I want to do anything than be here and have him this close to me. Without consulting my brain, my eyes flutter too, and I feel myself leaning in. I can feel his breath on my lips when my brain decides to brake and abort this entire mission. I jerk away abruptly, making Charlie open his eyes now too. “I got to… do stuff…” I walk past him and towards the askew sheet music to clean up that mess. I don’t know how I left Charlie, and to be fair, I don’t dare to look at him. It takes me at least five minutes before I look up and find him at the piano, grabbing his guitar again.
The rest of the night is spent in pure silence. The only thing filling up the room is Charlie’s soft melody and his voice singing ever so softly. I can barely understand a word he’s singing, but it’s just a reminder that he’s still here. Though the sound tells me he is, I still glance up every now and then. Either I catch him already glancing at me, or I’m caught by him. And every time we do, we both smile.
I don’t really know what to do with myself or the things I’m feeling inside. Every time I’m standing as close to Charlie as I was before, there’s this tingly feeling that I feel
everywhere
in my body, but my brain just stops working every single time our lips inch closer. I don’t even know why my brain does it. It’s like I can’t even control it. I want to. But I can’t.
When I’m done cleaning up, Charlie puts his guitar back on the wall and grabs his stuff too. It’s completely silence between both of us except for the explosive sexual tension between us. That’s loud enough for both of us.
“So…” Charlie starts when we’re outside and I’m locking the door. I cringe a bit, thinking he might start talking about what had just happened. “Can I come back to hang tomorrow too? And I’ll bring the boys on Saturday.”
“Yeah, of course,” I reply and fall into step with him to walk down the street together. “Hey, if you bring the boys Saturday, will you show me that
Finally Free
song?” Charlie opens his mouth, possibly to object, but I interrupt him, “It might convince me to join the band?”
“If it’s finished by then, we might,” he replies with that soft, lazy smile on his face. “Will you show me
Perfect Harmony
then?”
“If it’s finished by then, I might,” I repeat his answer whilst one corner of my mouth tugs into a smirk. Charlie chuckles at that, shaking his head at me. “How did you and the boys become a band?” I’ve been wanting to know that since I met the three together at the Open Mic Night.
“We met each other in Middle School, and we all liked music, and then we learned that all of us play a different instrument and boom, band!” he explains amusedly with a bright smile as if really happy with the memory.
“You guys hit it off right away?” I ask, and without knowing, lead him onto my street.
“Uhm, yeah, pretty much. All three of us were kind of new, didn’t have many friends, so we automatically kind of attracted to one another.”
“The purest form of friendship,” I respond, “That’s how Madison and I are too. We met in Kindergarten and I remember her pushing Brianna off the swings because she was mean to me,” I have to laugh at the memory of Madison and me in Kindergarten. “Or at least, that’s what our parents told us.” My smile fades a little, thinking about my parents.
“Was your Uncle Robert a sibling of your parents?”
I nod in response, “He was my mother’s brother. But I’d rather not talk about my parents too much.” Charlie’s eyebrows knit together in confusion, asking me what happened with them. “Long story short, they kicked me out of the house when I told them I wanted to go to the Music Academy instead of a ‘real’ college.” I use air quotes around the word ‘real’. “I live with Uncle Mitch now; he was Uncle Bobby’s husband.”
“Oh… I’m sorry about that, Emily,” he sounds sad, and when I look at him, even his eyes look the part. It makes him look like a sad puppy. “That must suck bad. I imagine going to that fancy school is like a dream of yours?”
“Yeah, Uncle Bobby and I used to dream about it all the time,” I smile at the memory of Bobby. He was an amazing support and I hope he’ll be proud of me once I make it through auditions. “But the audition process is very intricate and only a few people get in.”
“I’m sure you’ll capture your spot with your wrecking ball of talent.” I offer him a smile, and then halt right in front of my house.
“This is my place,” I say, pointing, “Well, my Uncle’s place.” He turns around to look at the small house with the white walls and the red door. If anything, the red door gives away who lives in the house. It was Bobby’s idea to paint it red. He always wanted to stand out.
“It’s quaint,” Charlie nods approvingly.
“I mean, it ain’t no mansion, but it’s definitely home.” Charlie chuckles at that.
“Well, I’m going to head to the shed for band practice,” he says, and I can tell he’d much rather stay but I can’t invite him in with Mitch home. The poor boy won’t survive the abundance of questions that’ll be thrown at his head. “I’ll see you tomorrow?”
“Yeah, definitely. See you tomorrow.” He offers me a smile and a wave, and I return the favor until he walks away.
“Stop staring at my ass!” he yells, startling me slightly because I
was
looking at his ass.
“Don’t flatter yourself!” I yell back but can’t help but smile. And blush.
I almost really did kiss him today. If my brain didn’t object so hard, I would’ve kissed him. And I would be fine with that.

THE B-SIDE BUMPER BACKTRACK 2017 - PART TWO
Whoever you talk to, and whatever they're into, the consensus seems to be that 2017 has been an incredible year for the East Anglian DIY music scene. For Part Two of our Festive Retrospective Extravaganza, we spoke to yet more promoters, writers, DJs and artists from around the region about their favourite albums, tracks, gigs and moments from the last 12 months, including Fightmilk, The Interesting Times Gang, Kyanos, Graceland, Desperate Journalist, Sophie Mahon, Kulk, Clown Smash Everything, F.O.X and more...
LILY RAE
The Tyler Durden of Fightmilk club. www.fightmilkisaband.bandcamp.com
Album of the Year: ‘Juniverbrecher’ by The Indelicates. It’s spooky, furious, and you can dance to it. In other words, an ideal album. Track of the Year: ‘Prom’ by SZA. You can just put it on repeat for about an hour and not get bored of it. Lovely. Gig of the Year: I’ve got two: Julien Baker at (London’s) Union Chapel, for my favourite super sad telecaster porn or Tundra at The Hunter Club (In Bury St Edmunds), which was the most fucking amazing thing I’ve ever seen in my life. You could make beer-glitter angels on the venue floor after the set. Moment of the Year: Princess Nokia throwing soup at a racist. More throwing soup at racists in 2018, please. Turns out it’s a very versatile food. Tip for 2018: This is the year you go to the dentist, pal.

Tips for 2018: Milk Teeth’s 2017 EPs showed a promise that should be delivered upon in 2018, and Cambridge bands Hollowstar and False Hearts are great bands with a bright future.
PAUL JENKINS
Our man in Norwich. www.outlineonline.co.uk
Albums of the Year: In order: Peter Perret - ‘How The West Was Won’; Madonnatron - ‘Madonnatron’; Jay Ducker - ‘Country Sober’; Mogwai - ‘Every Country’s Sun’; Amadou & Mariam - LA CONFUSION’; Wooden Arms - ‘Trick Of The Light’; British Sea Power - ‘Let The Dancers Inherit The Party’; Wire - ‘Silver / Lead’; The Jesus & Mary Chain - ‘Damage And Joy’; Ho99o9 - ‘United States of Horror’. (I’ve not included compilations. If I had, ‘This Was The Sound of Sugar Town’, ‘This Is The Sound Of Sugar Town Volume 2’ and ‘The Best of Chris T-T’ would have been in there.)
Tracks of the Year: In order: Zero UK - ‘Things You Love’; Gaffa Tape Sandy - ‘Beehive’; Ho99o9 - ‘United States of Horror’; Janet Street Slaughter - ‘The Sensitive Side of Bill Sykes’; Mega Emotion - ‘Sick Burn’;  Charlotte Gainsbourg - ‘Deadly Valentine’; Jim Jones & The Righteous Mind - ‘Something’s Gonna Get Its Hands On You’; Madonnatron - ‘Mother’s Funeral’; Marc Almond - ‘Something Bad On My Mind’; Peter Perret - ‘Troika’.
Gigs of the Year: Almost every gig I have been to this year has had at least one excellent act on the bill so picking highlights is tougher than ever but here goes (in date order): Ho99o9, Norwich Waterfront, January; Nightingales and Graceland, Norwich Arts Centre, February; Horse Party and Claws, Bury St Edmunds Hunter Club, April; Melt Banana, Mega Emotion and Algae Bloom, Norwich Arts Centre, June; Magoo, Norwich Arts Centre, July; Dowling Poole and Last Great Dreamers, London Borderline, September; Gaffa Tape Sandy, Norwich Arts Centre, October; Bad Apples, Norwich Owl Sanctuary November; Wonk Unit, Owl Sanctuary, November; Icicle Works, Norwich Arts Centre, November.  Honourable mentions also to British Sea Power, Subhumans, Wire, The Lovely Eggs, Rainbow Girls, Hot Raisin, Tubes and the four Quireboys/Last Great Dreamers dates I managed to get to.
Moments of the Year: Driving, crewing and doing merch for Last Great Dreamers when they supported Quireboys in Aberdeen, Glasgow, Newcastle and London; chatting to Alex from Wonk Unit before their Owl Sanctuary gig about addiction and being sober - anyone else would have been dull as chuff but Alex was his usual entertaining, engaging self (haven't paid any attention to him, though); meeting the various members of The Tubes - albeit briefly – after their show at the Waterfront.
Tips for 2018: Charlotte Carpenter, Bryde and Tibetan Night Terrors should break through to some mainstream success. The next She Makes War LP and Last Great Dreamers’ LP number four will be absolute belters. I have not seen New Scientists yet but everyone I know who has seen them says they are destined for big things. Ooh, and I’ve had sneak previews of the next Lovely Eggs and Hookworms albums, and they are crackers.
RICHARD HAUGH
BBC Introducing in Suffolk’s other lovely chap.  www.bbc.co.uk/radiosuffolk
Albums of the Year: Dingus Khan - ‘Dunce Kap’. The wait had been too long, but I’ll let them off for that. Sadly, it’s so far only been available at two gigs, but a full release early in the new year [our spies tell us it’ll be out in April - Espionage Ed.] should be celebrated.
Tracks of the Year: Bessie Turner, ‘Words You Say’ – just wow. It never gets boring. And Gaffa Tape Sandy’s ‘Water Bottle’ and ‘Beehive’. It’s really hard to be a stand out indie band but Gaffa Tape Sandy have managed to do just that.
Moments of the Year: My memory is terrible, so I may well be overlooking things, but earlier this week I went to Maida Vale with Bessie Turner and spent the day being stunned by her talent and how much she’s achieved this year. She only released her debut single in April but went on to play at Latitude and has become a firm favourite of Jo Whiley’s. It’s refreshing to see that good things can happen to artists who are doing everything on their own terms, without the reliance of industry connections or a large pile of cash.
Tips for 2018: Hopefully the momentum behind Bessie Turner and Gaffa Tape Sandy will result in further nice things for them both. I’ll also be eagerly awaiting new music from Leaone, Amy Milner and Radio Orwell, who are now a very good live band.

Albums of the Year: The Baby Seals - ‘The Baby Seals’; Gaffa Tape Sandy - ‘Spring Killing’; Slowdive - ‘Slowdive’; Underworld - ‘Beaucoup Fish’ (re-mastered); Janet Street Slaughter - ‘Janet Street Slaughter’.
Tracks of the Year: Fightmilk - ‘Pity Party’; Gaffa Tape Sandy - ‘Beehive’; Songhoy Blues - ‘Bamako’; Charlotte Gainsbourg - ‘Deadly Valentine’; Bicep - ‘Glue’; Blue Mean Eyes - ‘Escapade’; Desperate Journalist - ‘Hollow’; Goat Girl - ‘Cracker Drool’.

Moments of the Year: Playing 'What I'd Do' at [former band] Horse Party's final gig, at The Hunter Club in April - still not sure how I managed not to weep the tears of horrible sadness.
Tips for 2018: I’m really excited about Sun Scream, The Glitter Shop and Lemondaze. If Slowcoaches release a new album, I will be so so happy. Also: Grimes.
SIMON BAKER
Green Mind’s perennial thrill-monger.  www.greenmind.co.uk
Album of the Year: Waxahatchee – ‘Out In The Storm’.  Lyrically superb demolition of an abusive relationship coupled with some of the best indie rock I’ve ever heard.  So many hooks.
Tracks of the Year: The whole of ‘Out In The Storm’.
Gigs of the Year: Too many to mention, but here’s a short list:   Melt Banana at London Highbury Garage – always earshredding and just incredibly fun.
The Jesus & Mary Chain at Cambridge Junction – one of mine and a show I’m incredibly proud of.  Bucket list band, coupled with an “all killer, no filler” set list.  Nearly exploded when the really chiming bit in ‘Some Candy Talking’ kicked in.
Waxahatchee at End Of The Road – horrible rain all day, but they managed to cut through the rain and were essential.
Car Seat Headrest at End Of The Road – “KILLER WHAAAAALE, KILLER WHAAAALLE!”
Idles – superb live band, but I put them on twice while I was dealing with a recurrent brain condition, so never saw a whole set due to being tired all the time.  I need to rectify this in 2018.
Fickle Friends at Junction 2 – straight up pop band with no pretensions.  Seeing 350 kids having a brilliant and unpretentious time made this jaded old bastard smile.
Tips for 2018: Idles are clearly going to be the band of 2018.  There are so many tedious trench coat wearing post-punk revivalists and Idles just destroy all of them, by being wittier, cleverer and funnier and having their own ideas.

Albums of the Year:  Peter Perrett - ‘How The West Was Won’; LCD Soundsystem - ‘American Dream’; Dexy - ‘Tear It Down’; IDLES - ‘Brutalism’; Moon Duo - ‘Occult Architechture Vol. 1’.
Tracks of the Year: Makthaverskan - ‘In My Dreams’; FEWS - ‘LaGuardia’; Sheer Mag - ‘Just Can't Get Enough’; Ride - ‘Charm Assault’; British Sea Power - ‘Bad Bohemian’.
Gigs of the Year: LCD Soundsystem at Alexandra Palace; Paul Draper at Scala; Ezra Furman at The Barbican; Peter Perrett at The Electric Ballroom; Moonlandingz at The 100 Club.
Moments of the Year: Desperate Journalist playing Scala.  Releasing, and eventually selling out of, our album ‘Grow Up’ on vinyl. When the General Election exit poll results came in and half the country (and media) had egg on their faces.
Tips for 2018: Calva Louise, Gaffa Tape Sandy, Bad Nerves, White Trash.
SOPHIE MAHON
Your new BF.  www.soundcloud.com/sophie-mahon
Albums of the Year:  One which deserves a mention is an instrumental album by one of my bucket list session musicians. Admittedly I don’t normally go for instrumental albums but ‘Trigger’ by Jacob ‘Quist’ Quistgaard is fun and good for when you don’t know what lyrics you need to hear.  An album I only discovered this year after reading Nile Rodger’s autobiography is his solo album ‘Adventures In The Land Of The Good Groove’. Yes, it was made in 1983, but it’s Nile experimenting at his peak. David Bowie liked it so I think it deserves a mention.
Tracks of the Year:  These questions are much harder to answer than I thought! I’m quite fond of Tears For Fears recent single ‘I Love You But I’m Lost’, very catchy chorus; you’ll wake up at two in the morning with it on your brain.  Bryan Ferry’s jazz reworking of his songs for the German TV series ‘Babylon Berlin’ are beautiful (a continuation from his album The Jazz Age’ if you’re interested), particularly ‘Bittersweet’, which he recorded new vocals for too. The song becomes ten times darker, melancholy and weary; I had to listen to it on repeat for at least an hour.  Lastly an old track, which I discovered recently, is Etta James’s cover of ‘It’s Alright’ by Curtis Mayfield. The snare is like machine gun fire; give it a listen, that’s all I’ll say.
Gigs of the Year: Chic at The BBC, ABC with Kid Creole and The Coconuts as support and Bryan Ferry at Hampton Court. So much I could say about these, but all it boils down to is that they’re legends for a reason, which is why I will always try to see them whenever possible. For my own gigs, playing The Hunter Club for the first time was awesome - such a great crowd and the first time I have seen strangers dancing to my music, which has always been my aim so it felt great. The second would be playing the Inbetweeners Stage at Latitude - while neither the stage nor the audience were massive, just to be part of something so big was incredible.Actually another band to mention was Divine Comedy, they were at Latitude and I went to watch because they were the only band on that day that I vaguely knew. Best decision I ever made, Neil Hannon is eccentrically English [Actually he’s Irish, but you wouldn’t know it from his singing voice - Lineage Ed.], his lyrics are witty and clever and the performance was so light hearted it made a nice change. I didn’t stop listening to his music for about two months afterwards.
Moments of the Year: Releasing my first single ‘2BF’ and it getting played on BBC Introducing in Suffolk, bit daunting but the feedback on the whole has been pretty positive, thanks to everyone who liked it.Tony Hadley leaving Spandau Ballet; I am still upset.
Tips for 2018: Start as you mean to go on; I live by this and it seems to be working so far. Also just do what makes you happy, the music, image, brand and performance will naturally be more genuine and original, plus you feel happy too.  Finally, invest in a bigger car - there is, I find, only so much you can fit in a Ford KA. Or go acoustic; it’ll fit in nicely.
THOM LONGDIN & JADE ASHLEIGH SQUIRES
Together, they are Kulk.  www.kulk.bandcamp.com
Albums of the Year:  One of our albums of the year is Ty Segall’s self titled album. We discovered Ty through the band Fuzz (who encouraged the purchase of the Fuzz War guitar pedal, which has been a huge impact on our sound).  We bought the album as it was engineered by Steve Albini and has a classic rock and roll/garage fuzz feel. Well worth a listen, especially ‘Break A Guitar’.   Our other album of the year would be Courtney Barnett and Kurt Vile’s ‘Lotta Sea Lice’, this is their first collaboration of hopefully many. This is on the lighter side of our listening, but is poetic and beautifully bluesy. Highlights of this album include ‘Over Everything’ and ‘Untogether’ .
Tracks of the Year: Our first track of the year is ‘Tasteless’ by Shame. We first discovered Shame supporting Slaves; their sound is best described as indie but in a punk way, the music is heavy and the lyrics are angry but not distorted. If you like ‘Tasteless’ you will love ‘Gold Hole’ and ‘Concrete’.   We are also huge fans of Sunflower Bean, so naturally their new single ‘I Was A Fool’ would be on this list. This song is a homage to classic rock with still a hint of psychedelia from their previous album sound. We look forward to this new album next year and seeing them live again.
Gigs of the Year: Our best gig of 2017, which could possibly be the best gig of our lives so far, would have to be in Brixton on Hallowe’en this year: Melvins and Red Kross. Melvins are an inspiration to our music and it was amazing to see them live, with an even heavier sound than on record. For us, the highlight was ‘The Bit’.  They’re a must-see for any heavy music fan.  The Wytches at Norwich Waterfront studio was another best gig of 2017: the psychedelic riffs and heavy drums with the grit of Christian Bell’s vocals makes for an amazing live show. Their cover of Misfits ‘Cough/Cool’ (from their home recordings) live was particularly exciting. Their support acts - We’ll Be Detectives and The Weirds - created a great sense of what was to come.
Moments of the Year: One of our best moments was our first gig, at The Smokehouse Ipswich, which we organised with our friends Con Party and Jessie Ingate. The night was terrifying but it was amazing to play amongst friends for the first time.   We were also amazed after being asked by John Peel’s wife, Sheila, to play on BBC Radio Suffolk for the unveiling of John’s BBC Music Day Blue Plaque award - it was a huge opportunity and we really enjoyed every moment.   One of our biggest achievements this year would be the amount of awareness and money raised for the mental health charity Mind, through a gig we organised at The Smokehouse and an online campaign supported by the East Anglian Daily Times, in tribute to our friend Cameron Ray. It was co-organised with Cameron’s friend and celebrated his life through the connection we had with him through music. This moment sadly came from tragedy but it was everyone coming together that made it special.   Finally, re-recording our first single with Jamie Robertson has been a massive highlight of the year, the whole process has been great and Jamie has really helped us create something that sounds like it should. When we met Jamie for drinks to discuss the recording it was high on the list that it sounded like “you are in the room with us and can’t get out”, and he has done us proud. It’s very likely that we’ll be able to release it early 2018.
Tips for 2018:  We’ve decided to direct our tips at people who want to start bands and want to start gigging: 1. If you want a start a band but there’s only you and a mate who plays bass, go for it and jam together. Basically, start a band with what you’ve got not what you want. Even if you’re not Grade 8, if it sounds good to you it will to others. 2. One of the best tips we can give if you want to start gigging is to support local artists and go to gigs. Enjoy local music and it won’t be so scary to become part of it. Support the scene and it will support you. Speak to people and don’t be afraid to send promoters your stuff. 3. The most important tip of all is keep playing, even if you only have three songs. You want to be able to play them backwards with your eyes closed. Make the most of the one song support at your local pub, no gig is beneath you.

Albums of the Year: My album of the year is Slowdive's self-titled comeback, followed closely by ‘Stubborn Persistent Illusions’ by Do Make Say Think and Von Spar's 'Garzweiler' EP.
Tracks of the Year: My tracks of the year are 'Anthem For No State (Pts 1-3)' by Godspeed You! Black Emperor, 'No Longer Making Time' by Slowdive, and a special mention to the 3 unreleased gems that cropped up on Radiohead's 'OK Computer' reissue.
Gig of the Year: Best gig has to be Shellac at London’s Electric Ballroom back in October.  Also, I almost forgot about Part Chimp's triumphant and deafening live return at Cambridge's Portland Arms in April.
Moment of the Year: My moment of the year: Probably Theo (Morris, former Janet Street Slaughter guitarist) spectacularly stacking it off the stage at the final JSS gig in November!
ZOE KENT
F.O.X’s singing stadium superstar. www.foxtheband.com
Album of the Year: Lana Del Rey - ‘Lust For Life’.  I love everything she does, her voice is so haunting and powerful and I love the visions she creates in her lyrics of broken surburbia. Always takes me somewhere else.
Tracks of the Year: ‘Cover Me’ by Depeche Mode. The first time I heard this song it was like a lightning bolt, I always knew it was incredibly powerful and then when we supported them on tour it became almost their new anthem. A song of two halves. It's beautiful.
Gigs of the Year: It has to be Depeche Mode in Bucharest: it was the most beautiful stadium and the most perfect day. I've never seen them so on fire as I did there, the energy could be felt the entire way round the stadium and I just watched in in awe of it all. I'll never forget the thousands of lighters and phones lighting up the stadium - magical!
Moments of the Year: When we were invited to fly with Depeche Mode on their private jet to Leipzig. It was a true rockstar moment and I totally forgot my fear of flying!
Tips for 2018: My tip would be Amethysts, from Suffolk. I think they've got great songs and star potential - plus they're very nice people.

Elvis Costello and Blondie!
Elvis Costello & The Imposters and Blondie Embark on Co-Headlining Summer Tour Elvis Costello & The Imposters and Blondie Embark on Co-Headlining Summer Tour Bethel Woods Center for the Arts, the nonprofit cultural center located at the site of the 1969 Woodstock festival, today announced that Elvis Costello & The Imposters and Blondie will perform at the center on Saturday, July 20th as the first stop on their coast-to-coast co-headlining tour. Elvis Costello and Blondie shared spots near the top of the UK Singles Chart 40 years ago when Blondie's "Heart Of Glass" sat neck-and-neck alongside Elvis Costello & The Attraction's "Oliver's Army" in the company of The Bee Gees, Gloria Gaynor and ABBA. The same week, Blondie's seminal album Parallel Lines reached #1 on the Album Chart while Costello's Armed Forces landed at #3. Elvis Costello & The Imposters' last tour in late 2018 found the combo reaching new live performance peaks. The band "came out swinging" (Star Tribune) in Minneapolis, were "unstoppable" in Anaheim (OC Register) and played an "epic and euphoric" (Variety) show in LA that even at nearly three hours "[left] 'em wanting more." The Imposters are: Steve Nieve (keyboards), J*Davey Faragher (bass) and Pete Thomas (drums). In 2017, Blondie hit the road in support of their most collaborative album yet, Pollinator (BMG). Their spectacular live shows drew acclaim for their "flair and precision" (Rolling Stone), while being called "formidable" (LA Weekly) and "artful, rocking" (City Pages). Pollinator was praised by the likes of New York Times, Rolling Stone, NPR, Entertainment Weekly, Pitchfork and many more for its dynamic blend of Blondie's trailblazing sound and new influences from some of modern music's greatest innovators including Sia, Dev Hynes, Charli XCX, Dave Sitek, Joan Jett, and more. It features the euphoric disco-infused single "Fun," the propulsive 80s-esque anthem "Long Time," and the irreverent "Doom or Destiny." Elvis Costello's wide-ranging recording career began in 1977 with the release of My Aim Is True in a catalogue that include such diverse highlights as This Year's Model, Get Happy, Imperial Bedroom, King Of America, Blood & Chocolate, The Juliet Letters with the Brodsky Quartet, The River In Reverse with Allen Toussaint and Wise Up Ghost with The Roots. The 1998 release, Painted From Memory contained the first of more than thirty songs composed with Burt Bacharach, while the 2017 box-set re-issue of Paul McCartney's Flowers In The Dirt includes 15 demo duet recordings made by McCartney and Costello prior to the release of the albums Spike and Flowers In The Dirt, on which his co-written hit singles, "Veronica" and "My Brave Face," were first released. Costello previously appeared alongside Deborah Harry with composer/poet Roy Nathanson and the Jazz Passengers both in concert and on the recordings "Fire At Keaton's Bar and Grill" and "Individually Twisted" in the '90s. Elvis Costello & The Imposters' widely renowned Look Now was released by Concord Records in 2018 and of which Variety said, "It's so funny to be seeing him, after all this time, making a great cake of an album that doesn't really sound that much like any of the 30 before it." The catalogue will soon include the E.P., Purse, containing songwriting collaborations with Burt Bacharach and Paul McCartney and musical settings of lyrics by Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan. Since the release of their self-titled debut album in 1976, Blondie has brought the worlds of rock, punk, disco and ska together and racked up four indelible Billboard Hot 100 #1 hits - "Heart of Glass," "Call Me," "The Tide Is High" and "Rapture " - as well as six #1s on the UK Singles Chart including "Maria," "Sunday Girl," and "Atomic." Debbie Harry - genre-spanning visionary, complex songstress, incandescent front woman and style icon - and the band's boundary-pushing pop have shaped the look and sound of many chart-topping female artists who have followed and have made Blondie widely recognized as one of the most influential bands of our time. Debbie will reflect on this and more in her highly anticipated memoir out later this year. Blondie's Chris Stein recently released a photo book of his own entitled Point of View: Me, New York City, and The Punk Scene, following his successful first photo book, Negative: Me, Blondie, and the Advent of Punk. Selected as one of Amazon's best photo books of 2018, Point of View showcases Chris' brilliance as a photographer and documentarian, chronicling his life among his punk and new-wave peers and the downtown New York City scene in the 1970s through his insider lens. Elvis Costello, Pete Thomas and Steve Nieve are all members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Elvis Costello is an Oscar-nominated and BAFTA and Grammy award-winning composer and member of the Songwriters Hall Of Fame. Costello has received an Honorary Doctorate of Music from both the University of Liverpool and the New England Conservatory. Costello's unconventional memoir, Unfaithful Music and Disappearing Ink, was published by Blue Rider/Penguin in 2015. The New York Times review began, "Songs can be many things," Elvis Costello writes in his new autobiography: "an education, a seduction, some solace in heartache, a valve for anger, a passport, your undoing, or even a lottery ticket. Mr. Costello's book, Unfaithful Music & Disappearing Ink, manages to be all these things, and a pint of Guinness and a bag of chips. It's streaked with some of the best writing - funny, strange, spiteful, anguished - we've ever had from an important musician." The book went on to spend several weeks on the NY Times Best Seller List. Ever the bona fide international ambassadors of New York cool, Blondie - vocalist-songwriter Debbie Harry, guitarist and co-writer Chris Stein, powerhouse drummer Clem Burke, and long-time band members bassist Leigh Foxx, guitarist Tommy Kessler and keyboardist Matt Katz-Bohen - has become and still remains a true national treasure; one whose influence both shaped and continues to inform the worlds of music, fashion, art and pop culture. Blondie's chart-topping success, fearless spirit and rare longevity led to an induction into the Rock 'N' Roll Hall of Fame in 2006, a NME Godlike Genius Award in 2014, a Q Award for Outstanding Contribution to Music in 2016, and more than 50 million albums sold worldwide to date. Biography (TW: prescription drug use, chronic pain, addiction):
It’s almost as if Blaise has God on one shoulder and the devil on the other. A country boy through and through, he grew up as a methodist Christian and absolutely believes in God. He believes in grace, yet unfortunately, he sometimes takes said grace to be a license to sin. Preacher’s kids are the worst kids, they say, and Blaise is a testament to that. His father wanted him to take on active roles in the church, go to seminary, marry a nice girl with a lot of faith and live a cookie cutter life, but Blaise wanted no part of it– though he hasn’t completely left God. He appreciates the countless opportunities he received to practice and perfect his craft right in the church choir, and as much respect as he has for his father and the elders who taught him how to play the bass and other instruments in the first place, Blaise left the church and Wakefield to build a career as a musician in Nashville, Tennessee, only to return in just a few years.
Growing up in Wakefield, Blaise always had somewhat of a double consciousness, feeling convicted about his behavior at times, but going off of the deep end anyway. One thing he wouldn’t do, though, is be a pretender. He did appreciate hearing his father’s sermons, loving the poeticism of it all, but he wasn’t going to be someone he wasn’t. If he was out all night on Saturday, he wouldn’t put up a front of holiness on Sunday morning. His mother continually called him out for smoking on church grounds right after service, but Blaise always responded with a shrug, proclaiming, “I ain’t no hypocrite.” It was a miracle he’d attend at all. Family friends and old high school buddies who ended up being church musicians themselves would request him to play every now and then, and he agreed to jam with them again, even if it was just hymns. They were busier these days, busier than him, each with wives and and a kid or two. It hurt to find that they didn’t relate like they used to. Understanding each other was a task in itself. Complex and hard to reach, it’s a miracle if you could reach him. Hell, it’s a miracle if he could fully understand himself. Very little in his life stayed stable enough for close inspection. Unfortunately, most places, opportunities and people don’t interest him enough for him to stick around for long. The only things in his life that are certain fixtures are family, God (to a degree), and music.
Wakefield, too, now.  He sees it a little differently, these days. He left, and wasn’t really planning on coming back to stay, until a couple of years ago. A couple of years ago, a close childhood friend and fling gave birth to his first child, a beautiful baby girl named Charlie. Though he made a solid effort to see his child regularly, having built his career in Nashville and distance between them made it hard for him to see her. It hurt him to be so far from his daughter while she was so young. They facetimed often and he went to see her when he had a week or so in between shows, but that wasn’t enough. He had to do right by her. He’d made some great friends in Nashville, and built a solid fanbase, but being there for his daughter during her formative years was more important.
Ever since moving to Nashville, Blaise’s chronic (but usually mild) sciatic pain was flared up to levels he’d never experienced before. He supposed it was constant pavement beating he’d been doing in the city compared to grazing the grassy fields of Wakefield. It’d been half a decade since he’d been bucked off a horse and pinched a nerve the first time, but that ongoing, intermittent issue continued to present itself. Blaise reckons he should sit down somewhere and tax his body less, but he can’t. He’s got old buddies to catch up with, a daughter to run around and chase, family properties that his family is relying on him to maintain more actively, now that he’s home. In Nashville, on days where it was hard to even get out of bed, he’d gotten used to taking prescription opiates to get him going. As soon as he decided to be home to be with Charlie, he did some outpatient rehab to wean himself off of it.
Things were going well, for a bit. He was on dosage prescription, absolutely legal this time, and it was fine. Then he found it felt like a tease, actually worsening his mood and triggering a semi-depressive state, while doing almost nothing to take away the pain. Being that irritable and in pain was starting to make him crabby, totally unlike his usual cool and calm self. That won’t do, so he’s begun to self medicate, tentatively... Just vicodin, right? He knows he could get himself back into trouble, but it’s a feeling that he can’t resist right now. He finally feels like himself again, and he’s determined to ride that wave for as long as possible. Anyway, he tried stopping, only to be thrust back into a wave of debilitating pain. So he keeps taking them.
He knows it can easily turn into an addiction, again, but doesn’t see any other options– hell if he’ll lay there in a depressed fog. Life is short, Blaise figures, and he decided he’s going to live his life without regrets, which means doing what he has to do to enjoy it without being spiritually dead, too. He’ll get a handle of it before it becomes a real problem and interferes with his professional life.
Sometimes the guilt does plague him. On the other side of the carnal flesh, there’s the spirit. His daughter. He can philosophize all he wants about enjoying life to the hilt, but the real life, real deal truth is that he has to stay alive, happy or sad. In pain or not in pain. For her. He has to stop. During his quiet mornings and dramatically fewer quiet nights, he reflects on his current position and how he almost feels like a slave to his chronic condition and to the drugs, and he hates that. A caged bird is still caged, self inflicted or not. He’s thinking about seeking out other options to treat his condition, and is tossing around the idea of inpatient rehab for his own (and Charlie’s) sake.

Gang Of Youths – Live at The Forum, Melbourne, Australia
Gang Of Youths are Australia’s biggest success story in years. The Sydney-based band formed in 2012 and has enjoyed a steady stream of success, be it selling out larger and larger venues or recipients of critical acclaim. Flash forward to now, when Gang Of Youths had to announce a whopping 21 dates (all sold-out) for their Say Yes To Life Tour, with eight sold-out dates at Melbourne’s iconic Forum Theatre alone. Last year, the band received seven ARIA award nominations for their brilliant #1 album, Go Farther In Lightness. They won four of them (Album Of The Year, Best Group, Best Rock Album, and Producer of The Year – for Gang Of Youths & Adrian Breakspear). They even supported the mighty Foo Fighters for seven nights in the US during the band’s Concrete and Gold Tour last month! So, Gang Of Youths’ Say Yes To Life Tour is a big deal; for the band and their loyal, growing fan-base. It’s an absolute triumph: a homecoming for our dearest indie rock band, and a celebration of positivity and growth. If you rolled into Melbourne’s Forum Theatre early enough, Publique were there warming up the room. The five-piece from Sydney delivered a sweltering half-hour set of post-punk. New single, “Deprecate,” was a highlight of their set, seeing the band experimenting a touch with their signature sound. They had me enamored for the short time they had the stage. Publique certainly didn’t appeal to all members in the crowd, as a few rude patrons demonstrated, but I believe they’re brimming with potential. In a few years time, Publique could be Australia’s answer to IDLES, the formidable English post-punk group breaking ground just two albums into their career. Second support act Charlie Collins (ex-Tigertown) has joined Gang Of Youths every night of the Say Yes To Life Tour. She and her band were just delightful. Charlie Collins’ sentimental yet fresh brand of indie rock is sure to gain her tons of fans – and, god, her voice is marvelous. Donning an acoustic guitar and using the harmonica for two songs, Charlie Collins’ talent was undeniable. Her band was incredibly solid, effectively capturing the magic of obvious influences such as Fleetwood Mac and Johnny Cash. “Mexico,” her latest single, which she dedicated to her sister currently having a rough time, had the large crowd swaying and even singing along. At the end of her set, my sister turned to me and said, “we are so seeing her next time she’s here.” My sister and I felt the same thing on Monday night: Charlie Collins is destined for greatness. If you’re a fan of Kacey Musgraves, Angus & Julia Stone and/or The War on Drugs, then Charlie Collins is one to keep on your radar. The sold-out Forum Theatre was absolutely buzzing with anticipation when Gang Of Youths strode onto the stage. Opening with the Springsteen-esque, “Fear And Trembling” was a tremendous choice – Monday night’s crowd was already in for something exceptional. Dave Le’aupepe began the song solo, only with his acoustic guitar. He was greeted with deafening applause and cheers, and the first of many crowd sing-alongs. Following the first verse, all hell broke loose: the full band charged in, the crowd sing along grew somehow louder, and everyone began dancing. The band immediately followed “Fear And Trembling” with the equally blistering, “What Can I Do If The Fire Goes Out?.” Again, it was pure madness. I’ve never seen such an enormous reaction from a crowd. Every member of Gang Of Youths shone that night. Le’aupepe’s voice was silky smooth. He often boogied towards guitarist, Joji Malani, sharing overjoyed grins. Jung Kim is an understated star on the keys. The rhythm section was also incredibly tight, with bassist Max Dunn holding songs together and providing a further layer of vitality, while Donnie Borzestowski crushed the drums for 90 minutes straight with the power Gang Of Youths are renowned for. With Le’aupepe’s honeyed vocals, long curly brown hair, cheeky smile, and sometimes-ridiculous dance moves, he’s already a superstar. Perhaps even a spiritual successor to the dearly missed INXS frontman, Michael Hutchence. After only two songs, Le’aupepe greeted us. Most importantly, he made sure to remind us all that: “everyone in this room should be comfortable. Look out for the people around you and take care of each other.” He didn’t have to say anything of the sort. But, as a young woman in the crowd looking out for my younger sister, it was comforting to hear that Gang Of Youths cared for every single person in the packed theatre. Of course, a majority of Gang Of Youths’ setlist comprised of their latest album, Go Farther In Lightness. However, nothing could’ve prepared me for the beautiful three-song-punch of “Keep Me In The Open,” “Do Not Let Your Spirit Wane,” and “Persevere.” Proving to be a genuine, down-to-earth frontman and individual, Dave Le’aupepe left us with some deeply honest monologues before both “Do Not Let Your Spirit Wane” and “Persevere” – about the experience of being labelled an atrocious band to see live, and of his family’s struggles before he was even born. Then, prior to “Persevere,” every band member except Le’aupepe left the stage. He sat by the grand piano and delivered such an intimate, stunning rendition of the song, that I currently struggle to hear the studio version. An older woman turned to me after “Persevere,” remarking how the men around her were “in their feelings.” She wasn’t wrong. Whether Gang Of Youths are capturing hearts with lovely ballads or inspiring thousands to rally against negativity with rip-roaring rockers, the result is the same: a Gang Of Youths concert isn’t simply another gig. It’s a life-changing experience. Go Farther In Lightness is only just over a year old. You wouldn’t know it by the rapturous sing-alongs witnessed on Monday evening! What might be the best thing about seeing Gang Of Youths live is simply watching everyone around you, and from my field of vision, here were some of my favourite unbridled moments: two teen girls singing smash-hit, “Let Me Down Easy” to each other, holding hands; a 20-something-year-old man resembling The 100’s Richard Harmon on someone’s shoulders, gleefully throwing his arms at the band during “The Heart Is A Muscle”; a 40-something-year-old man yelling at the top of his lungs for the chorus of devastating breakout hit, “Magnolia”; and beautifully, a group of four strangers with opposite ethnicities, arms around shoulders, chanting along to the refrain of “Say Yes To Life”. It was a night of exuberance, acceptance, and diversity; which is what Gang Of Youths have always been about. Four years ago, Dave Le’aupepe was in the darkest place he’s ever been in. He has expressed immense gratitude towards his bandmates for helping save his life. A huge portion of Gang Of Youths’ debut album, The Positions, tracked the tragedy that plagued him at the time. See “Magnolia,” the precise recollection of the night Le’aupepe would attempt to take his life. “Magnolia” could have easily been a song that dwelled on the darkness; Le’aupepe could have given up. But, he didn’t. On Monday night, he dove into the loving arms of the audience, all of us celebrating life with him. “Magnolia” was one of the first of several songs where Gang Of Youths would revere in making the most of life, setting the path in which the band has continued to follow. What I witnessed when I finally saw Gang Of Youths live a few nights ago was more than a concert. I’m fully aware that I was in the presence of a band poised to take the mantle from epic rock acts (who the band happen to be influenced by), such as Bruce Springsteen, INXS or U2. Gang Of Youths already have an incredible repertoire of ginormous rockers, as well as gorgeous, wholly unique ballads. What every sold-out audience beheld over the Say Yes To Life Tour is a fully-formed band. Love them or hate them, something I’m entirely sure of is Gang Of Youths are here to stay. Soon enough, the world will experience what thousands of Australians have during this tour: two hours of unadulterated bliss and walking out of iconic venues, gobsmacked. I can’t wait to hear more stories like mine. --- Please consider supporting us so we can keep bringing you stories like this one. ◎ https://chorus.fm/features/gang-of-youths-live-at-the-forum-melbourne-australia/
