What’s your opinion on Extreme Ghostbusters?

Ooh, that’s a good one. I haven’t watched XGB in a while, so my memory of some details may be rusty~

The things I like: all the ghost designs for this show and how they pushed for more dark and grotesque looking monsters. Previous villains in the franchise were certainly spooky, but these had a distinct look thanks to Fil Barlow. He was the concept artist who also worked on Godzilla The Animated Series (Another great show!). I appreciate the nods to classic horror as well as the original creatures he came up with. The more diverse cast was also a welcome addition. Not to mention, all the new gear the Ghostsbusters got. Overall very creative art direction and ideas!

The things I don’t like: The setup feels odd at this point in the franchise history. I feel like the whole “going out of business and starting up again” works for Afterlife’s premise because we’ve been waiting 30+ years for new content, but unfortunately the franchise already did it twice with GB2 and in XGB. I don’t think it works here because, again, it’s a repeat of GB2 and not enough time has passed in or out of universe. I can forgive that, but there’s some other stuff that feels off too. This team didn’t seem to have the same camaraderie that the OGs had, feeling less like a group of close friends and more like just students/coworkers. Egon and Janine’s relationship is also awkward. I don’t even ship Janegon that strongly, and yet I think they should have just gone ahead and made them a couple. Otherwise, just make it clear the two were only friends and leave it at that. I found it silly the writers kept teasing viewers with Janine’s unrequited crush all those years later (romance isn’t handled well in the canon of ANY GB media IMHO). Theres some other stuff that bothers me too, like how they portray Egon as being in bad shape and acting older than he really is, or the disrespect towards Ray in the series finale (becoming a car salesman? Really? The man is a scientist).

Now, I realize that my list of issues came out longer than my list of good points, but I don’t want to give the impression that I hate the show or anything. I think it’s got a lot of fun stories and great characters, it’s just held back by a few questionable decisions. I don’t rewatch it for fun like I do with RGB, but I do dig the aesthetic. I’d love to see Kyle, Eduardo, Roland, and Garrett come back in some future spinoff!
