Memphis Comic Expo 2022 is in the books. Had a great time this year, the first year back after a break.

Expo pictures are from the final hours on Sunday. There were way more people present on Saturday but even on Sunday there was a decently large crowd.

Signed books/collectibles: Everyone I got something signed by were super cool people. Especially James O'barr. Venom Lethal Protector and Spider-Man 2099 had always been a really early part of my comic collection, so it was great to meet the artists after obsessing over those books as a kid. Dan Brereton personalized my Nocturnals book. Denys Cowan signed my The Question #1 (a sentimental book that I was introduced to by friends) and Mark Waid signed my Daredevil #1, a book that's pretty special to me and was one of the few series I stuck with when I started picking up comics on a semi-weekly basis. There were some things I forgot to bring (like my Sozo Maika books) but I'm overall satisfied with everything anyways.

Comic pickups: I already blew through most my budget getting collectibles and things signed so I didn't do a whole lot of digging for comics this year. Of course I managed to grab a lot of manga-centric stuff. Especially stoked on the Adam Warren Dirty Pair run find.

I thought I'd redo my intro post and this time make it ✨pretty✨

I'm Cat [she/her | aroace] and I write sci-fi and fantasy with a dose of cosmic horror. I love mixing genres and general experimentation. Whether my work is marketable or not is less important than having fun. My absolute favorite things are found family, robots, and time travel, and I am a firm believer that platonic relationships can be just as fierce and important as romantic ones. Most of my novels are set within a shared universe I call the Starfish Saga and that's my main focus, though I do have quite a few exciting projects outside that.

I am quite shy but love making new writer friends and am open to tag games and ask games and other sorts of writerly socialization.

The adults in the novels are more serious and competent than in the game, and the three children are written more realistically. Why is that 🤨🤔

I guess you can say that the novels take themselves a bit more seriously than the game, although there are still silly and lighthearted moments. That's my theory.

The adults are... written a bit more like real-life adults. Yep.

And the Protectors don't ask the children to complete tasks for them, the kids just do it on their own.

They just didn't know how to properly watch them, because they were too busy dealing with Octavian.

There are certain things that are written in such a way to keep it more lighthearted. Example: The way that Octavian is written is that he will not hesitate to kill anyone that stands in his way. However, instead of using lethal darts in his dart gun (or just a regular gun...), he uses non-lethal darts.

They don't use guns that shoot anything lethal in the game :) they shoot potatoes and peas and whatnot

Oh, the kids. They act like normal kids. Cause they're from Earth, not Poptropica.

I don't remember where I found it. I suggest just looking on some PDF download sites. I'm sure that's what I did. Sorry I don't have a better answer for you.

Hero’s Flight by Janie Crouch

Linear Tactical-Oak Creek #2

Childhood friends, sweethearts, then something happened that created a separation difficult to bridge. This is a second chance romance with wonderful characters that definitely deserved their happily ever after!

What I liked: * Derek Bollinger: ex-Air Force Combat Controller, pilot of helicopters and planes, working with Helitak, brother, son, survivor, has PTSD, protective, lethal, loves his wife, conflicted and in pain

* Becky Mackay: veterinarian, intelligent, intuitive, caring, wise, strong, dedicated to her marriage, wants to help Derek with his PTSD, has a bad guy to handle before the end of the book

* The plot, pacing, setting, and writing

* That it stands alone without reading previous books – though it was fun to see some of the old characters again

* Seeing characters from the next generation that will be having their stories told in this series

* The glimpse into flying, rescues, survival, and the need for women to be able to protect themselves

* That at least one of the bad guys was caught

* Knowing that Colton and Ella will be up next to have their story told

What I didn’t like:

* Who and what I was meant not to like

* Knowing how many people must suffer from PTSD as well as the impact it can have

* Not knowing what the outcome for Princess is

Did I like this book? Yes

Would I read more in this series? Yes

Hi my loves, how are you?

I feel like I haven’t been here in a while! I haven’t come by to say hi, so here I am. I hope you all are doing well. 💜

I have to catch up with the new Venom Lethal Protector comics! I think so far I read three of the issues, so I have one to go? I think it was four. I still love Symbrock and Venom, obviously. I just have been a little detached from fandom activities. I still haven’t finished that fic I started all that time ago. I know, embarrassing. I have been too busy with a lot of stuff to really sit down and enjoy some fanfic writing. So that’s my bad there. I’m going to try to be done with that before the year ends. I’m doing NaNoWriMo this year, but I’ve already decided I’m working on the sequel to my novel, The Crystal Conjurer. I’ve received messages from people asking me when the sequel is coming out, and I haven’t written beyond an outline. Oops 😅 So I have to really get working on that. The sequel has been named, at least. It’s The Golden Oracle. If you read my book, you know why! I can’t wait to share that with you. It’s going to be a lovely book. With lots more action that the first, I’m sure of it. And romance too 👀. I’m really busy with university (my seemingly eternal battle with university... I’ll graduate someday, I promise that to you and myself), but I won’t let my academic business to stop me from being creative and creating these stories for you and for myself.

Lethal Protector Audiobook: The Saga Continues (It Does In Fact Ramp Up)

In case anyone happens to be interested in my further thoughts on the Lethal Protector Audiobook, put out by Graphic Audio. I haven’t quite finished it yet, but I have uh, enough thoughts that they might warrant their own post.

Pleasant surprises abound: Eddie’s actor’s hushed and perhaps slightly awed tone when the symbiote tells him he’s strong enough to fight his way out of the sonic prison without their help is weirdly endearing.

Getting to that one cool part of the novel I’ve heard about where Donna Diego bonds to the Scream symbiote. I have heard it is quite romantic...

Oh, uh, well then.

That said, Donna’s actress does sound very lovely as Scream. She’s also, er, how to phrase this delicately, very enthusiastic when emoting nonverbally during the aforementioned scene.

Right, moving on.

I’m a little thrown that Peter seems to be completely unaware of the concept of a distraction, as he acts weirdly surprised that Scream would try and throw a kid through a plate glass window so she could run away while Peter is busy saving him.

On a side note, I wonder if that nameless teenager now has an adorable Spider-Man puppy crush. Godspeed, nameless teenager who nearly died for an Instagram video, I hope one day you find a cute boyfriend who enjoys cosplay.

I seriously have no idea what they’re using for the Foley for Spider-Man’s footsteps/wall crawling. Something scratchy, like sandpaper on concrete. Really, it sounds very weird.

Interesting that Peter automatically assumes that Donna has just completely forsaken clothing upon bonding with a symbiote. Isn’t that generalizing?

No seriously, she’s walking with a group of other people and he assumes that they’re all wearing normal uniforms but that her street clothes are made of symbiote? Why would you think this, Peter?? Are you imagining it, you weirdo???

Who am I kidding, she probably has forsaken clothes already.

There is still too much Peter in this.

Though the narrative does set him up for mockery by making him spectacularly blow his cover for the sake of a one-liner. I wonder if he realizes the symbiote actually does have pretty consistent taste in men?

Eddie’s actor sounds appropriately grief-stricken when they’re prying off the symbiote. Also of note, the desperate flailing noises the symbiote makes when they’re watching the sort-of-potentially-dead Eddie from the Evil Jar. Ah, l’amour. <3

Also on a bizarre side note, while fussing with a fanfic, I apparently managed to hit on what Tuck thinks it feels like to be forcibly separated from a symbiote. Namely that it feels like being flayed alive. The descriptions of this are weirdly decadent. Mr. Tuck, do you have something to share with the class?

On that topic, Local Man Continues to Scream While Being Tortured.

Huh, Eddie pulls off a “playing possum” gambit and a “pretending to be hurt to get close to your enemy before stabbing them with Chekov’s Scalpel” in succession. I’m actually impressed. He also managed to compliment the symbiote when it wasn’t even there. He sounded so affectionate despite the context. I may cry.

Also the Chekov’s Scalpel bit reads really well with the addition of the voice actor heroically gasping and pretending to struggle. “Oh no these horrible sonic guns are the one thing that can hurt my other--WHICH IN CASE YOU FORGOT YOU PEELED OUT OF ME 30 MINUTES AGO, GENIUSES”. Maybe the symbiote really did upgrade. Or they left Eddie with their one collective brain cell.

Another scene which is helped by the addition of sound effects: completely naked Eddie being simultaneously punched by the Life Foundation Quintuplets. It’s actually hilarious. It sounds like something out of Who Framed Roger Rabbit?

I am a tad disappointed we don’t live in a universe where the Quintuplets decide to bail back to papa and Eddie takes his spouse and kitten basket of good children and they move into an an apartment and spend their days eating rats in the walls and chewing on furniture. Peter would have an aneurysm.

Oh, it’s the reunion scene! Eddie’s actor really nails “rumbly but quietly emotional” with his “Did you miss me?” line. Be still my heart. The narrator is giving his all with regards to breathlessly describing their mutual, overpowering longing and the tube touching--

--and now there is softly swelling, strumming guitar music. Over descriptions of them pressing their hands/tentacles against the glass like they’re Kirk and Spock. You know, in case it wasn’t totally clear it was That Kind of Scene. I was not actually expecting that. Bless you, sound mixer, A+ a very enjoyable amount of Gay.

FYI Peter and MJ’s emotional gooey phone call scene from near the beginning of the novel does not appear to warrant the Prominent Strumming Guitars. Well played, Graphic Audio.

Spoilers for the Lethal Protector novelezation

So I have a lot of favorite things about this book but when Eddie is like "no peter we can still save the life foundation symbiotes, they're still innocent, they haven't fully bonded with their hosts!" And then proceeds to Call The Babies to him

To which they essentially say 'bitch' and they each hit him one (1) time, and not even very hard, and suddenly Eddie's like "no wait I take it back fuck all of you, peter my babies are assholes"

Which is just the funniest shit in the world to me, all topped off by the fact that 1) Eddie is buck naked in this scene and 2) it's established in the beginning of the book that Edward Brock DOES have a mullet at the time
