Klaus Mikaelson in “The Birthday” | Lizzie Saltzman in “The Story of My Life”
[Caption: on the left, in The Vampire Diaries, Klaus is telling a random, scared werewolf in a bar, “I’ve got some vampire. I’ve got some wolf. [...] A hybrid, Ray. I think Jason and Tim may have canonically been in the same school grade before Jason died. Not because Tim skipped any grades, but because Jason was behind two grades. This would also mean Jason died before he ever made it into high school.
Based on what I have extrapolated from post-Crisis comics, this seems like a working timeline:
Tumblr media
Here is a calendar view with arbitrarily chosen years and other details added in for reference (if you can’t see it very well, here’s the spreadsheet)
Tumblr media
Below is the math + sources (all based on post-Crisis comics)
Before being adopted by Bruce, Batman #410 says Jason was a 5th grade dropout
(sidenote: Jason said his mom was sick for over a year and she died in the most recent February before Bruce met Jason in Batman #408-409)
By the time of Batman Annual 12 (published only a few months before Jason died)*, Jason was in 7th grade
His deathdate is given as April 27th in Batman Annual 25 and The Batman Files, which is during the school year
So he was probably in 7th grade when he died
Jason was most likely 14** when he died, and his Aug 16 birthday is before the New Jersey cut-off date of October 1st
Tim was most likely 12 when Jason died, since they’re almost exactly 2 years apart
Usually, 7th graders are 12-13 years old
So Jason was 2 years older than typical for 7th grade, and he is 2 years older than Tim
Tim started 9th grade/high school at age 14 (Robin II: Joker's Wild), over a year after Jason's death
14-15 is typical starting age for 9th grade, so Tim is clearly in the usual age-range for his grade
So Tim would be in 7th grade when Jason died. Same as Jason.
* Publishing dates don’t always match up with where things fit in a timeline. Especially since annuals aren’t always clearly positioned in related to the rest of the comic’s issues. In the annual, Jason does mention KGBeast, who he’d fought recently in the then-current Batman run.
My default is to presume things are meant to be set generally near other comics published the same time unless I see an indication otherwise. There isn’t much indication here—Jason’s age really isn’t mentioned at all during his actual run as Robin IIRC, we have to extrapolate from later comics.
**My reasons for Jason being 14 and Tim being 12 when he dies are long and complicated, but for a brief overview:
We know they’re almost exactly two years apart because Jason turned 18 on Aug 16th in Detective Comics #790, and just a while before that, Tim had turned 16 on July 19th in Robin Vol. 2 #116. That would make them around 1 year 11 months apart. The death certificate in The Batman Files says Jason was 15 when he died on April 27. However, Jay dying in April and Tim being 13 when his training starts a few months later (implied to be late summer/early fall, in Batman: A Lonely Place of Dying; age 13 confirmed again in Batman #448) and then December and more than 6 months passing before Tim is finally said to be 14 starting high school (Robin II: Joker’s Wild), and then having to stuff Tim’s Robin training, Knightfall, Contagion, Legacy, and Aftershocks into all being while he’s 14…all make it mathematically unreasonable for Tim & Jason to be anything other than 14 and 12 when Jason dies. Tim must turn 13 after Jason’s death, right before he’s introduced, so that he has time to become Robin etc. before he turns 14. Jason being 15 really doesn't work well when comparing to other comics, so I think it makes more sense to say they for some reason rounded up his age to 15 since he would have been turning 15 in a few months. With this timeline, Jason would be roughly 14 years, 8 months, and 11 days old when he died. There IS a comic (Batman #416) that implies Jason was Robin for longer than this would require, but the timeline for that makes my head hurt and it was contradicted by Nightwing: Year One anyway. There’s also the case of Dick’s age compared to them, which bitimdrake has already gone into depth about and also makes it less likely Jason was 15 since Dick was 19 when he became Nightwing (Batman #416) and at most 21 after Tim already became Robin (Deathstroke Annual 1, 1992). TL;DR: Jason could, theoretically, have been 15 when he died, but it makes the timeline so wonky to do that and 14 almost 15 works way better.
My personal headcanon is Jason drops out of 5th grade at age 10, probably due to homelife issues. Catherine Todd gets sick, and a year or more passes of Jason not being in school while she’s sick. It’s not entirely clear when Jason becomes homeless, though Batman #426 says he “disappeared” (according to his old neighbor) after his mom died to avoid getting put in a state home. Catherine dies in the closest February to when Dick quits being Robin/gets fired at age 19. Then Jason gets adopted at age 12, turns 13, and goes into 6th grade right after. This would match up perfectly for Jason to be in 7th grade by the time he’s 14, rather than 9th grade like most other 14 year olds.
(Which, at that point, especially when Jason had such good grades, why not let him skip to be in his own age group? idk, maybe Bruce or Jason or Alfred had particular thoughts about Jason continuing where he left off, maybe Gotham schools have particular feelings about that, who knows)
I do want to note, I think it is very unlikely Tim and Jason attended the same school in pre-Crisis canon. Jason’s school for 7th grade wasn’t specified, though in Batman and Robin Vol. 1 #25 he says he went to Thomas Wayne Middle School for 3 months (why only 3 months??? eerily that is the same amount of time between a spring semester starting & Jason’s April deathdate...an implication Jason switched schools or was homeschooled at Wayne Manor for a bit??).
EDIT: I've recently looked it up and realized some schools in the US do include 5th grade as middle school. So if Jason dropped out of 5th grade, at Thomas Wayne Middle School, three months after starting there, that could be an explanation for why he said that.
It seems like (but not totally sure) Jason probably went to public school, which would match up with Robin: Year One showing Dick go to a public middle school, too.
On the other hand, we know for sure that Tim attended various private boarding schools throughout his childhood (as stated in Batman: A Lonely Place of Dying, Robin III: Cry of the Huntress, etc.) so I just really don’t think they were at the same schools. If you wanted to, though, you could easily make them go to the same schools in fanfic so they could be in the same classes.

still on the same topic, i think a lot about how people seem to have taken a single line from batman #410 and ran with it, distorting the context… i’m talking about alfred saying that bruce mentions dick a lot when talking with jason.
Tumblr media
from what i have seen, fanon has taken it as bruce making malicious comparisons, and from that derived that jason must’ve grown resentful of dick because of that. but the canon is strikingly different? in the same issue, bruce tells jay that he did the same thing (talking the villain into getting taken hostage in place of a civilian btw) as the first robin would do; and he says that affectionately. jason is delighted to hear that.
Tumblr media
having said so, i’m not dismissing alfred’s comment completely; i do think it was a genuine piece of advice, telling bruce to remember to treat jay as his own person. and i’m not saying that jay did not live in dick’s shadow at all nor that he didn’t feel the pressure of living up to his legacy (that being especially visible in his appearance in ntt), but deriving a whole image of jason being resentful because of that is just… not true for 80s canon at all?

Today while shopping at the Antique Center of La Crosse and I found a little piece of Florida history and had to take it home. Kinda shocked at the fact I found this all the way in Wisconsin.
The Parliament House Resort in Orlando, Florida, traces its roots to a modest lakeside motor inn inaugurated on February 11, 1962, at 410 North Orange Blossom Trail. Initially, boasting 120 rooms and a burgeoning reputation as a premier event venue, it quickly gained traction under the management of Ned Eddy, Jr., and his brother, James (Jimmy) Eddy. Despite early success, by 1975, the property faced financial turmoil, prompting its acquisition by Bill Miller and Michael Hodge for $648,000. Their stewardship heralded a transformative era, culminating in the emergence of the Parliament House Resort as a celebrated LGBTQ+ destination, renowned for its vibrant nightlife and inclusive atmosphere.
Since its rebirth, the Parliament House has served as a cornerstone of Orlando’s LGBTQ+ community, offering a sanctuary for self-expression and camaraderie. Evolving from a modest motor inn to a sprawling entertainment complex, it not only provided a platform for cultural events but also fostered a sense of unity and pride within the LGBTQ+ community. Over the years P-house featured such acts as Charo, Macy Gray, Jennifer Holiday, Chaka Khan, Eartha Kitt, Cyndi Lauper, RuPaul, Salt-N-Pepa , The Weather Girls, and even Gloria Gaynor. Personally, I remember sitting and enjoying drag shows hosted by Darcel Stevens and the Footlight Players, and dancing to music played by DJ Brianna Lee. Despite its closure in 2020, the Parliament House’s legacy endures as a reflection of its pivotal role in shaping LGBTQ+ rights and culture, leaving an indelible mark on Orlando’s vibrant social fabric.

Why History?
"One of Arnaldo Momigliano’s reflections on the nature of historiography focuses on the centrality of war, its origins, course, and outcome as a dominant theme of Greek and later historical writings. The legacy of Herodotus to European historiography, Momigliano states, was the organization of a ‘vast enquiry about a war and its causes’. And Thucydides, he goes on, ‘contributed more than anybody else to making it an essential ingredient of European thought’ (Momigliano 1966, 116). In pursuit of an answer to the question posed by this essay – why history? – I want to underscore Momigliano’s observation, and reformulate it as a point of departure: war was the impetus for Greek historical writing, and it was the genius of Herodotus and Thucydides that made it so. Whatever influences may have come to them from antecedent prose writers, such as Hecataeus, Pherecydes, and Acusilaus, or from intellectual contemporaries among the sophists or the Hippocratic writers, none of them set war at the centre of their intellectual endeavour as Herodotus and Thucydides did. And however else Greek historiography developed after Herodotus and Thucydides, the theme of war, and the makers of war, remained central to the genre.1
But it is not enough to observe that war motivated the writing of history. As Momigliano and many others have remarked, war motivated Homer, and was likewise the impetus for much of lyric, elegiac, and tragic poetry. So while there can be no doubt that the example of Homer’s opening of the Iliad influenced the setting of war as a theme for Herodotus and Thucydides, there remains the question, why did they treat this theme in such a radically new manner? Why them? Why then?
The particular war in the midst of which both Herodotus and Thucydides were writing provides a significant indicator of the circumstances that prompted history. This was the Peloponnesian war, during which both Herodotus and Thucydides composed their histories (Herodotus to complete his work, by my estimation, in the mid-410s and Thucydides in the mid-390s).2 Something about the intellectual atmosphere and more particularly, I will argue, the political culture specifically of Athens during the last third of the fifth century BCE prompted these new and different literary treatments of war, which, once they found a reception, inspired replication and continuation in variegated forms ever afterward.
So far, I trust, these premises are unobjectionable (though some may take issue with my certainty about the dating of their productions): the works of the first historians were products of the times in which they wrote, and war, and the social and political deformations caused by war, were strong, sometimes overwhelming features of those times. Some may be content to consider the question, why history, suffciently answered at this point: it was one manifestation of an era of intellectual ferment that produced many singular and more-or-less enduring examinations of the nature of human existence (look to the sophists, and to the birth of rhetoric; look to Euripides and the transformation of tragedy, or the biting wit of old comedy; look to the medical writers; look to the emergence of political philosophy among the Socratics and their contemporaries).3 This I would characterize as the wide-angle, soft-focus answer to the question. Within this wide focus, examination of the relationships between the writings of Herodotus and Thucydides and contemporary prose and poetry reveals themes and shared modes of thought that were au courant. But none of this explains the singularity of historical writing. To get at the particular impetus for historical writing we need to sharpen the focus, and at the same time recognize that our perspective on the cultural and intellectual context of the late fifth century has been heavily altered by posterity. The fact that Protagoras, Democritus, Gorgias, and others among the sophists come to us only in fragments, often as quoted or paraphrased by their detractors, is warning enough that our view of the era in which Herodotus and Thucydides wrote is highly selective. There are elements of that era that we only dimly perceive, as it were, in our peripheral vision, but which stood much more sharply defined and present in the view of their contemporaries. My endeavour here is to bring into focus the particular context in which, and against which (because their works are hortatory and protreptic), Herodotus and Thucydides wrote. This entails, to extend the optical imagery, the enhancement of certain features of their works that responded to elements of their contemporary environment, recognizing those elements as attested outside of their works, and suggesting how those elements may have motivated the effort to produce an exhaustive argumentation about cause, event, and outcome that became historical narrative, what we often call historiography."
Mark Munn "Why history? On the emergence of historical writing" (opening paragraphs), in Ancient Historiography on War and Empire (Oxbow Books, 2017)
On line source with the whole essay https://www.academia.edu/42801150/Why_History_On_the_Origin_of_Historical_Writing
Tumblr media
Mark Munn is Professor of History and Archaeology and Head of the Department of Classics and Ancient Mediterranean Studies at the Pennsylvania State University (USA).
According to the review of this collective volume by Joseph Frechette (https://bmcr.brynmawr.edu/2018/2018.09.39/ ):
"The practical focus is ably brought out in Mark Munn’s introduction, which could stand alone as a study on the origins of classical historiography. Munn suggests that not only Thucydides, but Herodotus and the Atthidographers all wrote with an eye towards the political utility of their works in democratic Athens during the Peloponnesian War and the conflicts in its aftermath. For Munn, Xenophon’s work represents a transition to history composed not for a political class engaged in collective deliberative counsel, but for one that operated through charismatic leadership and battlefield reputation. Those with a broad interest in classical historiography will undoubtedly find it the single most useful study in this collection."
Well, from my part I find some of the ideas proposed by Pr. Munn in this essay rather objectionable (I mean above all his belief that Herodotus was not only alive but also active as a public figure in Athens during the 410's) or highly speculative (above all his notion that Herodotus wrote his Histories under the patronage of Callias or even -much more improbably- of Alcibiades and for the use of their circle). I find also that Pr. Moon tends to narrow perhaps too much the purposes behind the composition of the Histories. Still, this is a very interesting and worth reading text about the context of the beginning of historical writing in the West.

Monday March 27, Day 2 Trekking Recap
Today we went from Phakding to Namche Bazaar. Starting at 8562 feet and ending at 11286 feet. Even though there’s only about 2700 feet of elevation gain between the two locations, with the ups and downs of the trail your total elevation gain is about 4000 feet over about 7 miles. With the steepest gain at the end (see green elevation chart). It took us about 5 moving hours (excluding stopping for lunch and permits).
As we trekked throughout the day it was sensory overload in every direction. We trekked through a valley that follows the main river down from Everest. We saw all sorts of beautiful flowers and trees. We had to step around many lazy dogs bathing in the sun. We crossed four suspension bridges high above the valley, to include the Hillary Bridge, 410 feet high and 459 feet long.
The Hillary Bridge is named after Sir Edmund Hillary, who, along with Tenzig Norway, a Nepali Sherpa, were the first to summit Everest in 1953. Hillary’s legacy is felt throughout the region with schools and infrastructure funded by Hillary’s foundation.
After a few hours of trekking we officially entered Sagarmatha National Park. Mount Everest actually has three names. First named Everest when it was identified as the worlds highest peak in 1852 by George Everest. In Nepali Sagarmatha means “Peak of Heaven.” Nepal has 3 of the 4 faces of Everest, only the North face is in Tibet. In Tibetan, Everest is called Chomolungma, meaning “Goddess Mother of the World” or “Goddess of the Valley.”
Later in the day, after the steep climb, we reached Namche Bazaar. Namche Bazaar was a small trading post for hundreds of years before it became a hub for trekkers and mountaineers in the mid 20th century. Today approximately 1600 people live in Namche, primarily working in jobs to support the trekkers and mountaineers. There’s everything here from a pharmacy (thank god, I forgot some meds at the hotel in Kathmandu) to an Irish Pub (where I will most certainly grab a Guinness when we stay in Namche on the way back down.
Tyler and I upgraded to the “upgraded accommodation” for our two nights in Namche and for anywhere else that is an option. That was 15 bucks each and means we get electricity in our rooms, a heated blanket (which we don’t need yet, it was about 35F in the room last night and our sleeping bags are incredibly warm) and, most importantly, our own toilet. Which, is amazing and clean.
We’re here in Namche for two nights and do an acclimitization hike tomorrow and we’ll get our first view of Everest!

Episode Arc (and Clumping) Guide for Star Wars: Rebels + Dark Disciple Audiobook Chapter/Episode Correlation
Because I could never find an "arc" guide online for Rebels, and as my favorite Star Wars podcast is transitioning into their Rebels era, I decided to clean up and post this list I made that tries to sort/clump episodes together based on shared plotlines, characters, or as failsafe, movieish-sized chunks. The point is to make a sort of manageable, weekly checklist for rewatches.
I'm also including my personal assessment of which of the unmade episode titles for the Asajj Ventress and Quinlan Vos arcs correlate to which chapters of the Dark Disciple audiobook, so you can listen to them in "episode" chunks over the next couple weeks before it is covered on AMCA.
Star Wars: Rebels
Season 1
[101, 102] - Spark of Rebellion
103, 104, 105 - Droids in Distress, Fighter Fright, Rise of the Old Masters
106, 107 - Breaking Ranks and Out of Darkness
[108, 109] - Tseebo Arc
110, 111, 112 - Path of the Jedi, Idiot's Array, and Vision of Hope
[113, 114, 115] - Tarkin Arc(in)
Season 2
[201, 202] - Siege of Lothal
[203, 204], 205 - Clone Arc + Always Two There Are
[Garel Arc] [206, 207, 208] - Brothers of the Broken Horn, Wings of the Master, and Blood Sisters
215, 216, 217 - The Call, Homecoming, and The Honorable Ones
[Garel Arc] [209, 210, 211] - Stealth Strike, The Future of the Force, and Legacy
212, 213, 214 -  A Princess on Lothal, Protector of the Concord Dawn, and Legends of the Lasat
218, [219, 220]  - Shroud of Darkness + Chopper Arc
[221, 220] - Twilight of the Apprentice
Season 3
[301, 302] - Steps Into Shadow
303, 304 - The Holocrons of Fate, The Antilles Extraction
305, 306 - Hera's Heroes, The Last Battle
307, 308, 309 - Imperial Supercommandos, Iron Squadron, The Wynkahthu Job
310, 311 - An Inside Man, Visions and Voices
[312, 313] - Ghosts of Geonosis
314, [315, 316] - Warhead + [Darksaber Arc]
317, 318, 319 - Through Imperial Eyes, Secret Cargo, Double Agent Droid
320, [321, 322] - Twin Suns + Zero Hour
Season 4
[401, 402] - Heroes of Mandalore
[403, 404] - In the Name of the Rebellion
[405, 406, 407, 408] - Prototype Arc
[Lothal] [409, 410, 411] - Rebellion Arc
[Lothal] [412, 413, 414] - Loth-wolf Arc
[415, 416] - Family Reunion - and Farewell
Dark Disciple
Ch. 1-7 (Episode 1) - Lethal Alliance
Ch. 8-12 (Episode 2) - The Mission
Ch. 13-17 (Episode 3) - Dark Disciple
Ch. 18-21 (Episode 4) - Conspirators
Ch. 22-25 (Episode 5) - Saving Vos, Part 1
Ch. 26-30 (Episode 6) - Saving Vos Part 2
Ch. 31-36 (Episode 7) - Traitors
Ch. 37-42 (Episode 8) - The Path
The only place I could find online that has attempted to make a similar chapter-episode breakdown was the Clone Wars wikia, which has no source for the information, and in my opinion, cannot be correct to the actual produced chapters of the audiobook. At the very least, Dark Disciples and Conspirators were switched from their original script order just based on the actual content of the audiobook chapters.
