We all love RomComs! But how do you write one? And how can you transncend the cliches to tell a deeper story? In this video, we talked with Elemental's writer/director Peter Sohn to see what's in a RomCom and how Elemental goes beyond the tropes to tell a highly personal story.

How to Read with Intention
Often you hear advice to read, read, READ!!! And while I absolutely agree with that, I think there’s a way to read effectively to learn from it, and make sure you gain the most you can from it.
Reading intentionally looks like paying attention to and taking note of the technique, skill, and choices the author makes. Start with identifying the basics: motifs, theme, genre, through-lines. Essentially anything your English teacher wanted you to pick out of school readings (turns out those classes were actually worth something)!
As you’re going through the story, record any questions, strong emotions, or other things that stick out to you. Try to be specific with page number and chapter so later you can see how the emotional narrative develops throughout the story. A note might look like, “I wonder what’s going to happen to Anna now that her mother is back in town” or “Josh losing his journal is ending my life”.
Note what you really enjoy about the story, and also what you would change or do differently. Things that make you uncomfortable, in both good or bad ways, or that inspire you. I copy down quotes of lines or passages that I find particularly well written. Sometimes, I try to capture a character I particularly like through finding the quotes that speaks closely to them.
Pay attention to every word. Writers make a million choices, what does using “sprint” rather than “run” change? Why does the scene in the school yard follow the scene at the tomb?
What do we know about our main character? How do we know that? We could ask a million questions about a story, and with every one, we’re learning a little bit more on how to write one ourselves.
Pay special attention to the ending. What insight does it give us to the rest of the story?
                Good luck!

So I just watched the school for good and evil movie, mostly for Kit Young, and the two main girl characters essentially recreated the main story beats of the scene from beauty and the beast where belle’s love saves the beast, complete with a kiss on the lips, only to then reiterate that their love is “best friends only” AND I just went in the tag to find out that in the books these two girls are SIBLINGS?????? I think this is the most convoluted case of queer baiting I have ever experienced and my head is SPINNING netflix pls you’re going to give the kids watching this a COMPLEX

The writing in My Mister is really something else. 20 yr old Lee Jian is just easily manipulating the lives of middle aged men and staring blankly and drinking an ungodly amount of maximo instant coffee and occasionally saying creepy shit like "Please hate me with all of your heart. I will hate you with all of mine." This is why we need more female writers

Arguing that it’s okay to feed fanfic into AI because it doesn’t legally belong to the fanfic author is so ridiculous because, the disrespect aside, you shouldn’t actually be feeding anything pertaining to the source material to AI either. Like, this is literally a concern with the WGA strike right now that AI not be taught using their work.
Anyways stop using AI for creative pursuits it’s plagiarism <3

We can say many things about the latest Sisi adaptations but to be honest I'm glad (most of them) were so open about how inaccurate they were from the very beginning. No one tried to convince us they were super serious biopics.

To the anon about fanfics:
Im a graduated screenwriting major. I started writing by writing fanfiction. It Was then that I realized it was something I wanted to do.
What’s hilarious though, is that when I got to college and met my fellow screenwriting majors, you would not believe how many told me they started because they started writing fanfic too!
Putting your stuff out there is scary, but just stop to think about the amazing things that can (and will) come from it!
❤️❤️❤️
Yessss, all these writers who started with fic writing! Seriously, so many people now have gotten their start with fanfic. Fanfic is uniquely accessible with low barriers for entry and a built-in audience that authors wish they had starting out. It's the best place in the world to try out writing, full of enthusiastic fellow authors and a premade framework to slot yourself into. I honestly think there's going to come a time when the vast majority of authors start with fanfic, as it becomes more and more accepted.
There's no telling what awesome things you might one day create if you take that leap and put your work out there. <3
