grumpy Elrond-critical discourse (which I realize is of very limited interest and something I will probably regret)

I like Elrond, but I'll never love him as much as fandom because of his rancid take on my general faves, late Third Age Gondorians. And the fact that it's right in front of Boromir and then Boromir's indignation is supposed to be Suspect or something???

And on top of that, Faramir, the character who most speaks for Tolkien, describes the integration of other peoples under the Stewards as a source of Gondor's strength and "wiser" than the kings. Despite his reasons for bias, this is evidently true IMO and probably the only reason Gondor is still standing and the loss of Númenor has far more to do with the fading of the Dúnedain anyway than anything else and there are definitely still emphatically Dúnadan types floating around Gondor.

So I think Elrond's remark about Gondor is not just super racist but also wrong even in-story. I don't really think it's meant to be read that way, but ... he is wrong. And even if the depiction of Gondor did back him up, it would still be extremely bad. It doesn't, though. And almost no one seems to register anything wrong with his melancholy over interracial marriage with what he characterizes as lesser races (!!!!!).

In fact, larger Tolkien fandom largely seems to buy into his representation and adfkjadka;adfkja. Almost every discussion of whether Gondorian Dúnadan characters are Dúnedain results in someone eagerly bringing up their ~impurity and while Tolkien was really bad on this front, the fandom seems actively worse. And that awful take just gets a pass and. Ugh.

Love that he means this physically but also emotionally. He's not quite an adult yet, but he's enough of one to support her in all the ways the adults responsible for her as a child didn't.

Again, physical and emotional. He's big enough to carry her, and between his strength and how little Rin eats, it probably isn't hard for him; and she's not a burden on him emotionally. He's not going to break under the weight of pretending to care and turn on her, the way her parents did. Haru's so blunt, all of his actions are feelings and feelings are actions, and for someone who gets tangled up in her own thoughts as much as RIn does, that kind of directness might be the only thing she can believe.

Actual professor here! Genetically, all humans are Normal types, though some of our relatively recent ancestors were Psychic. Part of what let us succeed as a species was reutilizing the brain power originally used for psionics to language and tool use. We do still have some vestigial psychic power that can be trained, though it's quite weak compared to most Pokémon. As for those born with psychic powers, this is considered nowadays to be like an egg move, passed down from parent to child. And no, obviously learning Fighting moves doesn't make you a Fighting type, there is no way for a human to change their type.

Not that they're the same. Misogyny and transphobia are not the same, but they are both veins of oppression in a patriarchy. Similar.

In the same way, that empty hollowness white ppl feel where your culture should be is not unlike what I feel as a native, from what I've read of your accounts. Learning your ancestors chose whiteness and safety and comfort over culture and identity. Because of the power it has even just as a concept in the US.

Someone tried to act like I'm not allowed to call myself mixed bc I don't speak Spanish.

Both English and Spanish are colonizer languages. The one you speak is a byproduct of what kind of misson/residential school/ church your ancestors were abused by. Nothing more, speaking Spanish isn't a badge of honor to hold over your cousins heads just bc your part of the family wasn't displaced as quickly.

Being mixed also doesn't negate someone's lived experiences and culture. Neither does being a victim of cultural erasure/poverty and trying to reconnect.

Blood quantum is another tool that only aids cultural erasure.

I'm living in and working to help native communities, my own and others. I'm going to protests and powwows, I'm helping my friends club at their college to raise awareness for indigenous issues, I'm attempting to learn at least a little in my tribes and my friend's tribe's languages, as well as reconnect to my Scottish ancestors too.

I grew up homeless I had very little access to anything remotely cultural. Nearly all my energy was on finding something to eat and somewhere to sleep. Poverty in america is designed to erase culture. Having a community and reconnecting brought me stability and gave me a chance to learn and be apart of things. So sorry I didn't learn more Spanish, I might one day, but I'm going to learn tribal languages first.

And to any native or Mexican kids out there struggling to learn their languages with limited resources and limited access to reservations or elders, I see you, every word you learn is power you are reclaiming from the colonizers. Every syllable, every symbol, every word is rebellion, and I'm proud of you. Even if you only know one word, that's one word refusing to be forgotten, one small act of defiance they can't take from you again. Keep fighting.

Killing and murdering the people who started the whole “if you’re American only speak English” thing. Is it easier when one language is known by a majority of the population so that when you travel around the country or whatever you can speak to most of them? Yes. Should we be this pressured to only use one language? No! Stabbing them all rn. Next person to say “this is America, speak English” in front of me will fucking die.

This is like the painting thing all over again except that it’s not just like the painting thing. (There are two people I know painted in my family. One with watercolors and one with oil. Both are dead and I use acrylics. To be fair my grandma who used oils gave me a few lessons but we didn’t get around to doing many and I honestly don’t mind using acrylics instead, I just think about it sometimes.
