grumpy Elrond-critical discourse (which I realize is of very limited interest and something I will probably regret)
I like Elrond, but I'll never love him as much as fandom because of his rancid take on my general faves, late Third Age Gondorians. And the fact that it's right in front of Boromir and then Boromir's indignation is supposed to be Suspect or something???
And on top of that, Faramir, the character who most speaks for Tolkien, describes the integration of other peoples under the Stewards as a source of Gondor's strength and "wiser" than the kings. Despite his reasons for bias, this is evidently true IMO and probably the only reason Gondor is still standing and the loss of Númenor has far more to do with the fading of the Dúnedain anyway than anything else and there are definitely still emphatically Dúnadan types floating around Gondor.
So I think Elrond's remark about Gondor is not just super racist but also wrong even in-story. I don't really think it's meant to be read that way, but ... he is wrong. And even if the depiction of Gondor did back him up, it would still be extremely bad. It doesn't, though. And almost no one seems to register anything wrong with his melancholy over interracial marriage with what he characterizes as lesser races (!!!!!).
In fact, larger Tolkien fandom largely seems to buy into his representation and adfkjadka;adfkja. Almost every discussion of whether Gondorian Dúnadan characters are Dúnedain results in someone eagerly bringing up their ~impurity and while Tolkien was really bad on this front, the fandom seems actively worse. And that awful take just gets a pass and. Ugh.

taino teachings are realigning my entire mindset. everything is. making more and more sense the more i read. Yoka hu (the father) and Ata Bey ( the mother) are both inside me . spiritually and physically. i have always said, for many years that i did not understand the concept of gender how this society is teaching it, because i am both my father and mother in body and spirit, but also wholly myself, and i need to respect myself, and how i've been feeling for so so long. it's all making so much sense.
#there are many beautiful things that come from the origins of the abrahamic religions but they are not part of me or for me to follow or be#forced to follow#fear is not how you should rule yourself or others#everyone should look into how their ancestors lived and truly truly consider their teachings and incorporate them into your lives#you might find yourself healing in ways you never even thought you needed#i am not religious#but i believe in the spirits that guided my ancestors to guide me#and for my ancestors to guide me#i need to look into the teachings of my african ancestors and incorporate both into me#to learn and to grow and to teach and to pass on#ohhhh i have so much to learn and so much more life to live#thank you ancestors#and fuck you to the ancestors that failed this mission. at least the lesson ive learned from you is to never be like you#i met an amazing Thai woman the other day and had a long conversation with her about life and business and things#and it was because#i saw a doll in front of her food truck and it drew me in#she said it was gifted to her by a vendor#because she went up and was like oh! that doll is from my culture!#i showed her the dolls i had just bought that day! they were two little black children dressed up like cute clowns they are my favorite😭💚#and she asked what i was. i told her i was Black Boricua and White and she was like oh wow you are truly of the Americas#or truly american#and i was like i guess so huh but i suppose we all are since this is where we have been made to live#huge advocate for bringing back culture shock and making people respect the culture of THIS land while also maintaining#a healthy relationship with their own#the the only way we can move forward and thrive like a true melting pot that will become something new and beautiful

[ID: a large panel from Fruits Basket. In the top-right corner is a slightly faded reprint of a panel from an earlier chapter, where a younger Haru is crouching on the ground, checking on a collapsed Rin. Most of the panel is the present-day Haru, carrying Rin over his shoulder as he says, "I've grown up enough that I can carry you myself. Rin..." End ID.]
Love that he means this physically but also emotionally. He's not quite an adult yet, but he's enough of one to support her in all the ways the adults responsible for her as a child didn't.
Tumblr media
[ID: Haru says, "Okay? You're not a burden." Haru is facing away, so we can't see his face, but the way Rin is hoisted over his shoulder, we can see her looking up, eyes wide as she begins to cry. End ID.]
Again, physical and emotional. He's big enough to carry her, and between his strength and how little Rin eats, it probably isn't hard for him; and she's not a burden on him emotionally. He's not going to break under the weight of pretending to care and turn on her, the way her parents did. Haru's so blunt, all of his actions are feelings and feelings are actions, and for someone who gets tangled up in her own thoughts as much as RIn does, that kind of directness might be the only thing she can believe.

it's all "must a book have a plot? is it not enough to just write about vibes?" until nathaniel hawthorne writes a 300+ page novel based entirely on haunted house vibes. then it's suddenly "too long winded" and "nothing happens" and he "took 300 pages to say something that could have been said in 40"
#/hj#is this the best novel i've ever read? absolutely not oh my god he goes on and on about philosophy and his paragraphs are SO LONG#but listen. it's about the vibes. it's about the haunted house. it's about the generational curse and is it actually a curse? who knows!#it's about the mystery of whether or not something supernatural is happening or if everything has an explanation#it's about the cyclical tragedy and characters both doomed by the narrative and haunting the narrative#it's about how dwelling forever on what could have been will prevent you from moving forward#it's about how you shouldn't judge someone based on appearance#it's about how the end of your life is only the beginning of your legacy and YOU get to decide if you will be simply repeating the actions#of your ancestors. or if you are going to be the one who finally breaks the chain and says NO. this is wrong and i won't stand for it#it's about choosing which family you hold onto and which family you distance yourself from#it's about the fact that alice deserved better and hepzibah's loyalty deserves recognition and phoebe might give everyone sunshine#but she should learn to keep some of it for herself too#it's about the fact that hawthorne takes 300 pages to say:#our property and every physical thing we have in this life will not follow us and we should not live our lives according to the whims dead#men left in their wake. but it does no one any good if we erase the past entirely#you just have to be willing to see it#SORRY APPARENTLY I HAVE. A LOT OF FEELINGS ABOUT THIS BOOK LOL#hello grace here

I got to hold a 500,000 year old hand axe at the museum today.
It's right-handed
I am right-handed
There are grooves for the thumb and knuckle to grip that fit my hand perfectly
I have calluses there from holding my stylus and pencils and the gardening tools.
There are sharper and blunter parts of the edge, for different types of cutting, as well as a point for piercing.
I know exactly how to use this to butcher a carcass.
A homo erectus made it
Some ancestor of mine, three species ago, made a tool that fits my hand perfectly, and that I still know how to use.
Who were you
A man? A woman? Did you even use those words?
Did you craft alone or were you with friends? Did you sing while you worked?
Did you find this stone yourself, or did you trade for it? Was it a gift?
Did you make it for yourself, or someone else, or does the distinction of personal property not really apply here?
Who were you?
What would you think today, seeing your descendant hold your tool and sob because it fits her hands as well?
What about your other descendant, the docent and caretaker of your tool, holding her hands under it the way you hold your hands under your baby's head when a stranger holds them.
Is it bizarre to you, that your most utilitarian object is now revered as holy?
Or has it always been divine?
Or is the divine in how I am watching videos on how to knap stone made by your other descendants, learning by example the way you did?
Tomorrow morning I am going to the local riverbed in search of the appropriate stones, and I will follow your example.
The first blood spilled on it will almost certainly be my own, as I learn the textures and rhythm of how it's done.
Did you have cuss words back then? Gods to blaspheme when the rock slips and you almost take your thumbnail off instead? Or did you just scream?
I'm not religious.
But if spilling my own blood to connect with a stranger who shared it isn't partaking in the divine
I don't know what is.

Can't stand how people will learn that humans are related to Pokemon and somehow come to the conclusion that different people are different types. That's not how this works. That's not how any of this works.
🍑 pechaberrysoda
there are literally so many fighting type people what are you even talking about lmao
🌊 lugias-sopping-anus
Your genetic make up doesn't just magically change type because you took a karate class. Do you also think your Charizard is a Grass type now because it learnt Solar Beam?
✨ ace-trainer-luna
But aren't Psychic type people a thing? Some humans have telekinetic powers, I'm pretty sure there are a few gym leaders who have them. There are even rare cases of children born with psychic abilities.
🌸 cynthiasfuturewife
that's still just learning moves
🌌 mistyterrain
As an actual Psychic type, this post is really disheartening to see. The fact that people who still refuse to acknowledge the existence of psychics are so common is just shocking. We exist!

no one's refusing to acknowledge the existence of shit, you just don't know how types work

The sheer ignorance on display here, it's obvious you're just mad you're a normal type lol.

Actual professor here! Genetically, all humans are Normal types, though some of our relatively recent ancestors were Psychic. Part of what let us succeed as a species was reutilizing the brain power originally used for psionics to language and tool use. We do still have some vestigial psychic power that can be trained, though it's quite weak compared to most Pokémon. As for those born with psychic powers, this is considered nowadays to be like an egg move, passed down from parent to child. And no, obviously learning Fighting moves doesn't make you a Fighting type, there is no way for a human to change their type.

The tags on my whiteness post said to me that white people (at least those that are racially aware) and colonized natives perhaps have more in common than most people think. Or at least more than they talk about it in public.
Not that they're the same. Misogyny and transphobia are not the same, but they are both veins of oppression in a patriarchy. Similar.
In the same way, that empty hollowness white ppl feel where your culture should be is not unlike what I feel as a native, from what I've read of your accounts. Learning your ancestors chose whiteness and safety and comfort over culture and identity. That now you have nothing because of the colonization and assimilation your grandparents experienced when they got to the USA. Because of whiteness. Because of the power it has even just as a concept in the US.
We experience these for much different reasons and at least your loss bought you privilege.
... but they aren't total opposites either. A hollowness where you know rich history used to be? Having culture but feeling a disconnect where you know More used to be? Feeling like you only have scraps of the culture your family used to have? Clinging to what you can get your hands on? Feeling like it's so detached that it's not really yours?
I get that and I bet I'm not the only one.
The USA's habit for white supremacy, racism, and colonization hurt all of us.
And it will benefit all of us to discard the systems those things built. They're still there and still hurting every one of us.
We can build a future that benefits us all instead as soon as we all start working on that together.
But we can't do that if some of us refuse to admit the system is what's hurting us. If we refuse to acknowledge that even with perfect politicians our Systems would still prevent progress because they are built on outdated and white supremacist ideals we'll just continue to suffer together under those systems instead.
We can't keep attacking each other just because some of us refuse to look at the ideologies fueling our current reality.

Someone tried to act like I'm not allowed to call myself mixed bc I don't speak Spanish.
Both English and Spanish are colonizer languages. The one you speak is a byproduct of what kind of misson/residential school/ church your ancestors were abused by. Nothing more, speaking Spanish isn't a badge of honor to hold over your cousins heads just bc your part of the family wasn't displaced as quickly.
Being mixed also doesn't negate someone's lived experiences and culture. Neither does being a victim of cultural erasure/poverty and trying to reconnect.
Blood quantum is another tool that only aids cultural erasure.
I'm living in and working to help native communities, my own and others. I'm going to protests and powwows, I'm helping my friends club at their college to raise awareness for indigenous issues, I'm attempting to learn at least a little in my tribes and my friend's tribe's languages, as well as reconnect to my Scottish ancestors too.
I grew up homeless I had very little access to anything remotely cultural. Nearly all my energy was on finding something to eat and somewhere to sleep. Poverty in america is designed to erase culture. Having a community and reconnecting brought me stability and gave me a chance to learn and be apart of things. So sorry I didn't learn more Spanish, I might one day, but I'm going to learn tribal languages first.
And to any native or Mexican kids out there struggling to learn their languages with limited resources and limited access to reservations or elders, I see you, every word you learn is power you are reclaiming from the colonizers. Every syllable, every symbol, every word is rebellion, and I'm proud of you. Even if you only know one word, that's one word refusing to be forgotten, one small act of defiance they can't take from you again. Keep fighting.

Killing and murdering the people who started the whole “if you’re American only speak English” thing. Is it easier when one language is known by a majority of the population so that when you travel around the country or whatever you can speak to most of them? Yes. Should we be this pressured to only use one language? No! Stabbing them all rn. Next person to say “this is America, speak English” in front of me will fucking die.
This is like the painting thing all over again except that it’s not just like the painting thing. (There are two people I know painted in my family. One with watercolors and one with oil. Both are dead and I use acrylics. To be fair my grandma who used oils gave me a few lessons but we didn’t get around to doing many and I honestly don’t mind using acrylics instead, I just think about it sometimes. Watercolors look like sorcery though)
#emma posts#this isn’t even some white savior shit so don’t think it’s that shit#this is about what other people have to go through for sure. but it’s also personal#I have a fucking grudge against the idea of cultural assimilation and getting rid of your own in the process#learning how to best communicate with a majority of the people in a country is one thing#telling people that they can ONLY speak that way and ONLY act that way makes me bite people#they already did that to my grandparents and it WORKED on them#I don’t want to see people who still have more shit from their family get shit for that#if you know the language that your ancestors spoke more than two generations back. or even more than one. and you want to keep it? do.#please don’t let people stop you from doing it even if it’s just online or at home#because someone will probably mourn the separation#maybe you#maybe someone later. but it’s sad#and it’s bullshit when in my country specifically we call ourselves a melting pot but don’t accept anything different#what are you melting??? your own ass in the heat?#I know I’m melting in the heat but that’s not the point#the biggest things i have left as a connection are desserts#there is more. but I can’t even read half of it#not without learning from outside sources#i can’t change the decisions of my family and I understand why they did it#I also understand that it was easier for them to blend in that way since they were white#but I’m still sad. it’s lonely. it’s lonely going through boxes of family heirlooms and not being able to read half of the books#or the postcards#especially the postcards#and the books might be some of the most boring ones ever for the most part (a bible and records and stuff)#but i still can’t read them. and its not the same getting them translated#i have no idea if this makes any sense. and I might not have liked every single person in my family#but i still want to read the fucking postcards!#I might be American now and maybe i don’t have much of a connection but I want to know!#i want to learn! even the boring stuff and ESPECIALLY the interesting things
