@helloijustreadyourpost​ — Tolsimir’s Summons

Out of the cards this week, this is one that I feel is close to something we could see in an actual return to return to return to Ravnica, and I do like that a lot. Tolsimir comes and he brings his wolves and then you got some token summoning and it’s a really great card all around! Slow-ish big enchantments have been a Selesnya kinda-staple (even if there’s no watermark, which is a STRIKE against you.....lol, not actually) in the form of Privileged Position, Growing Ranks, Collective Blessing, etc. and this card fits right in. A great limited card for a beatdown, I say.

And of course, this being a flavor-based contest, this card feels good. You can get your dogs, and they return, and Tolsimir’s a good dude bringing them back. It’s a great relationship and I think that it fits in quite well to both the character, which is resonant but not necessarily deep without a lore-diving, and the mood, which is that wolves are lovely and there’s a bond between the creature and its guardian. I think for the flavor text could have and should have been reduced to one line, not just for text space but also because your card’s impact is strong enough already. “As Voja returns to me, I shall return to him.” could have been perfect, because your art direction as well shows what’s happening in relation strongly enough that we don’t need the extras. It’s a simple mood, but has emotional resonance. That’s what’s important!

@nine-effing-hells​ — Crown of Mogis

Even without art direction, I can visualize what’s happening here. And tis excellent! Mogis, described sometimes as “rage-crowned,” is certainly one to actively bestow that upon someone. And I really love how this ties in with the mechanics so well. The invocation to slaughter and the intimate command are oddly strong to me. I think that it’s nice to see that Mogis does indeed have his favorites, you know? Like there’s certain minotaurs that he takes and he gives them this piece of fury and from that, they lead, and it’s a blinding madness when he brings it into the mortal realm with the privilege that comes from it. That much ties in well, the strength between the mechanics and flavor.

The only question mechanically is whether or not this can be in mono-black, or whether it should be. In a limited format, getting this on turn two means you could be getting a 2N drop in green, white, or blue with Swamp>Creature, Swamp>Crown, [basic]>creature, which... Well, okay, that’s borderline strawman, but it’s a real possibility, and the question is, is that okay for the format, to give haste in hybrid? But you can give a lot of weird things in hybrid, and black is secondary (tertiary? No, secondary. I’m not gonna look it up, if I’m wrong, it wouldn’t be the first time) in haste and can do some funky things with it. The “can’t block” is a downside that not every color wants, though, so that’s at least something that makes it significantly more aggressive. It’s a good question you’re raising here. I think that it’s okay but I’m not sure. At the very least the design is based in greatness and if need be can just be a RB card no hybrid, but I think that it’s okay to risk it. Maybe.

@starch255​ — Mageta’s Roar

Look, you can tell me that Mageta’s not actually a giant lion-man all you want, but he’s still a zillion feet tall and you know what that means for me. As for this card, well... I drafted SNC at the store last night, and let me tell you, ETB abilities are no joke. Anyone playing with this card could have some fun for sure. The fact is that Scapegoat is still a fringe Cheerios combo piece sometimes means that this card could see a home there, plus it’s just a cantrip... You know, that’s the thing, this card is incredibly strong if you’re a smug mono-white player, because it’s basically “W: Draw a card.” And that’s my main mechanical quibble? I think, if I had to choose, you could have to target at least one thing. Or, you could only draw a card if YOU returned at least one creature to your hand this way. But ETB abilities are still powerful enough that I’d certainly have a fun time with this card. I mean, heck, I play Spirited Companion, Skyclave Apparition, etc.

Flavor-wise, well, there’s certainly nothing to complain about. I like how it’s both something that would make an enemy tremble in their boots (and make me swoon to watch) or something that would make a soldier summon the resolve to stay and fight (like me, who would be swooning to hear). Am I biased? I’m not answering that. Look, in all seriousness, this card conveys exactly what it wants to well. Mageta is keeping his people safe by allowing them to return while he roars, thus allowing them to enter again and fight, and he’s giving the opponents’ creatures a chance to flee, and the flavor text pulling double-duty while making an interesting mechanical tie-in works for me. Both of the things that it wants to do are being done well. That much is worth commending!

Fine, not fine

When the pandemic broke out in 2020, I was left with nothing to do. Our WFH arrangement during those times is not something I consider as a heavy workload so most of the time I just find myself alone with my own thoughts – which is one of the scariest scenarios for me. To kill time and distract myself from my own self-destructive thoughts, I decided to watch documentaries on Youtube but there really isn’t enough for me so despite not having a huge salary, I decided to subscribe to Netflix and from then on, I was able to watch a lot of movies, series and documentaries. I really wanna write a reflection on each of the stuff I’ve watched but I’m too lazy these days (and yet, here I am writing one).

As I mentioned, I watched a lot of stuff on Netflix but the last three that I’ve watched lately (before I start being invested with American Horror Story series), Angel’s Last Mission: Love, The Good Place, and Mystic Pop-up Bar tend to have a common theme – life, death, afterlife. I didn’t even do it on purpose; I was just really interested in the plot of their stories. What these 3 shows have in common is that they discuss about the morality and consequences and these days, I’m really interested in those topics. Lately, I’ve been questioning myself about what kind of person I am – am I good or bad? I also keep on having an internal debate with myself as to whether or not there is an afterlife and if there is, then where will I end up? Heaven or hell? Those questions are kinda giving me some headache these days but at least it’s a good distraction from my own self-destructive thoughts. Somehow, Philosophy seems interesting to me now (during my College years, I dreaded that subject but still managed to get a 1.25 final grade lol). Anyway, here are my thoughts about the shows:

Angel’s Last Mission: Love

Major lesson: Keep the faith

This kdrama has such a beautiful way of presenting its story that you will fall in love with it in just the first episode! (Also because Kim Myung Soo’s dimples are to die for, omg I’m so in love) Anyway, this drama’s plot is interesting: an angel who disobeyed the law (he’s not allowed to meddle with the lives of humans especially since he’s a guardian angel for animals) on his last day was given the most difficult mission – to make the fallen ballerina know what love is. As I am writing this, I can’t help but feel emotional because the show knows how to attack one’s heart. I will not be telling more of its plot for I might end up spoiling it so I’ll just provide my major take away from this kdrama. (This is one of those kdramas that I can watch again and again coz it’s beautiful)

I was raised in Catholic faith, which is really not a surprise for a Filipino like me since this country is heavily influenced by the Catholic Church, but ever since I’ve become an adult and finally opened my eyes and allow myself to stop living under the notorious gaslighting of people around me, I struggled with my faith in God. It’s really difficult living a traumatized life. In 2018, I seek for professional help and was diagnosed with Dysthymia and Social Anxiety Disorder. And despite therapy and medication, I have not yet healed and sometimes feel like my situation is getting worse. As such, I felt so alone in my struggles which became the reason why I relate to Yeon Seo’s character. People labeled her as a cold bitch and most of them are expecting her to just move on and heal without fully understanding where she is coming from. When Yeon Seo said “Do you know what it feels like to be left behind? It feels like I’m abandoned alone in an endless desert” it hit close to home. I know that one’s pain should not be an excuse for acting up and being mean but people should also understand that healing is different for all of us – we heal at our own pace at our own time. Pain can change a person – I know it fully well for I’ve become a completely different person because of all the pain I’ve been through. But what this show taught me is that God is a merciful God and He will not let us be drown into the abyss of darkness…..somehow, He will make a way to get us back on track and sometimes it’s in ways we never imagined it to be. Like how they sent angel Kim Dan into Yeon Seo’s life, God will also be sending us the answer to our prayers for He loves us and He is the only one who will never give up on us – even though we gave up on ourselves.

The Good Place

Major lesson: There is hope for humanity

I’ve been obsessed with sitcoms since 2019 (if I remember the year correctly) for they’re easy to watch and just fun but I never expected that a sitcom will make me become philosophical and somehow question my own morality: am I a good person?

For a show with only four seasons and fifty-three episodes, The Good Place sets the bar high for a sitcom.  It did not drag its plotline but is able to tell the entire story in a way that leaves the viewers satisfied with it. The Good Place is a story *SPOILER ALERT* that revolves around the afterlife lives of the four main characters: Eleanor, Chidi, Tahani, and Jason who all end up in the “good place” because they earned enough points on Earth but there’s a catch, two of them are not actually meant to be in the good place. Eleanor and Jason both mistakenly went to the good place because they died at almost the same time as someone with the same name as them but the other two actually deserved to be in the good place. The dilemma started when Eleanor admitted the truth to Chidi, a Philosophy professor who specialized in Ethics for he is torn between helping them or snitching on them. But perhaps the biggest plot twist of all, *SERIOUSLY STOP READING IF YOU DON’T WANT ANY MORE SPOILERS* they are not really in the good place. All four of them are in the Bad Place disguised as the good place and they were specifically chosen to torture each other, just like what Jean Paul Sartre said, “Hell is other people” Now this gets interesting because while none of these four people have committed heinous crimes which can then make them deserving of a spot in the bad place, the actions they’ve done during their lifetime on earth has bearing. At first I find it surprising how Chidi and Tahani end up in the bad place considering that Chidi spent his life in the pursuit of goodness and Tahani is a philanthropist who raised millions of dollars for charities. But then, as the show progressed, I understood. Chidi’s vast knowledge of morality made him become an indecisive person which led towards the suffering of others. Chidi made other people suffer because he finds it difficult to make a choice. On Tahani’s part, she raised millions of dollars to help improve the lives of others but such is a self-serving interest – she did not do those things because she wanted to help but because she wants to make herself look good. On Eleanor’s part, while she did not commit serious crimes, she was a big ass jerk towards others during her time on earth. With Jason, although he is kind, his actions often lead to disasters and although unintentional, harm towards others. With these in mind, I guess it’s safe to say that humans are doomed for the things we do are most of the time self-serving. It’s hard to make it to the Good Place because in one way or another, we do some things that affect others in a negative way. But what this show also taught me is that while it’s true that hell is other people……humans have a chance to improve and be better when given the proper environment as well as when they help each other out. Just like what Michael said “The point is, people improve when they get external love and support. How can we hold it against them when they don’t?”

At first, this show kind of made me realized that I’ve been a bad person….that most of the decisions I’ve made in life are self-serving….I only do things that benefit me and I could not care less about other people but my biggest realization here is that, I acted this way because my unhealed pain and trauma is manifesting itself. I have been hurt way too much that it made me become a bad person and end up with the mantra that life is shitty anyway so why try to be good? And because of that, I felt bad. Now, I try my best to do good things, not because I want to feel good for myself but because it’s the right thing to do. I have come to the realization that just because I was hurt does not mean I have the right to inflict pain on others. I know that morality is not something that can easily be answered since it’s such a complex thing and humans are flawed but as what Michael said (he has a lot of great lines from the show, I can’t help but to keep on quoting him) “What matters isn’t if people are good or bad. What matters is, if they’re trying to be better today than they were yesterday. You asked me where my hope comes from? That’s my answer.” Please, please, please watch The Good Place! I guess it’s one of the best, if not the best, sitcoms ever.

Mystic Pop-up Bar

Major lesson: Grudges are the heaviest to carry/ the art of letting go

One word to describe this k-drama? HEARTWARMING. With only 12 episodes, this k-drama was able to provide me comfort and healing. I did not actually expect much from this as I only watched it because of Yook Sungjae but what I failed to realize is that this kdrama’s approach to storytelling will be heartwarming. The plot is pretty simple for a fantasy drama: a woman, Weol-ju, runs a pop-up bar in order to fulfill her mission of settling the grudges of 100,000 people but as the years went by, it became difficult for her to have people to open up. When people fail to open up about the grudges they are holding, then it will be difficult for her to help them in solving their problems. And since it is taking her way too long to finish her mission, she was given an ultimatum of having to finish her mission within a month – good thing is she found two people to help her with the case: the afterlife police agent Gwi and the human with special ability of making people open up to him just by having a slight physical contact with them, Kang Bae. I love the way these three main characters complemented each other and I sometimes wish that I was given the chance to be a customer at the Mystic Pop-up Bar not just to have them help me solve my grudges but because sometimes, all we need is people who will listen to us.

As mentioned, Weol-ju’s mission is to help people settle the grudges they are carrying and she makes it happen by having people go inside her pop-up bar, let them tell their stories to her and then she will eventually offer them a special drink (which she disguises as an alcohol) that will make them fall asleep so she can enter the dream world and do her work in settling the grudge. While watching this drama, I can’t help but wonder: why do people drink when they have problems? For someone who never drinks and is not interested in drinking, I’ve always been curious of it. They said that alcohol tastes bitter, so I don’t understand why it seems to be helping people in dealing with their problems? Some say that by drinking, it helps them escape their reality for a while. I did some research about this topic and according to Origins Recovery, alcohol contains anxiolytic properties which means that it helps in inhibiting stress or anxiety. As for the bitterness, I heard from someone that as time passes by, the bitterness become sweet unlike life itself in which as time passes by, it becomes more overwhelming. I guess drinking really helps people to take a pause from the absurdity of life despite its bitterness as well as the headache that follows after drinking. Moreover, who am I to judge people who rely on drinking when their life becomes a mess when I also have my own ways, sometimes self-destructive, of finding an escape from this horrible world that we live in? After all, when life gets too tough, we all just want an escape – even though it’s temporary.

With every episode, Weol-ju and her squad helped people settle their grudges and each time they do, it makes me feel emotional. This show makes me realized that all of us are carrying grudges we don’t talk about and when we do not have the avenue to vent it out, then it eats us up alive. All of us are no stranger to struggles, but it is important to be strong and courageous. We can choose to struggle alone but asking for help does not mean you are weak.

Let me end this blogpost by putting my favorite line from Weol-ju: “No matter what’s making you suffer right now, things will settle and pass eventually. Hang in there until then, and you’ll find yourself stronger”

30 days of WITCHversary

 Day 11 - Something awesome

Okay, a big PRAISE to the German dub on this one. As some of my followers, who read all my extra long tags, already know – yes, I’m from Germany and therefore watched W.i.t.c.h. in German. And this is actually the good thing about it – non-english speaking countries (that have enough money to spend on film industry) put a LOT effort in dubbing movies and tv shows. Germany is one of those countries. As far as I know the two European countries whose film/movie dubs are know as the best are Italy and Germany and it SHOWS.

Because I am a language nerd, I often do switch languages on my DVDs for fun and tbh when it comes to the guardian’s voices in the English dub of W.i.t.c.h. I was like SO disappointed? Like, a lot of changes (Taranee speaking with Cornelia’s voice at times etc.) and also pretty lame acting? I remember Taranee having an eel in her shirt in episode 3 and the English voice actress did..not deliver at all? While Marie-Luise Schramm, who voices Taranee in the German dub, is like F*CK THERE IS SOMETHING HELP ME AHHHHHH. But actually she is like that the whole time, she has got sm Taranee spirit it’s awesome. Also, Blunk’s German voice was so funny and CUTE while the english one was simply..funny? But idk the german voice feels sm more in character same with Caleb who sounds like a 12 years old in the English sub xD. So enough bitching about the English sub who has it’s good things too (like phobos and Cedric are awsome in there!)

So, long story short – I love the German dub sm! (I also love some other dubs and maybe will do a post about other good dubs too at some point). So while I will save our two evil bad boys for a later day, I’m gonna list up the 5 guardians with their voice actresses now and tell you why they are so good (and I bet now everyone stops reading lol.)

Will: Magdalena Turba

Okay, let’s start with a voice I am nearly always annoyed of because I first noticed her as Will and she therefore stays Will to me. As I said before, I am by far no fan of show!Will and I think things would have been better if Will had a cuter voice in the German dub? But on the other hand Magdalena’s voice is very fitting: she is confident and strong and also catches Will’s bossy moments very well.

Memorable roles: She is also the German voice actress of Amanda Seyfried and I still connect my childhood with Magdalena because she voiced Cera in the A Land Before Time movies (BEST CHILDHOOD MOVIES EVER FIGHT ME).

Irma: Esra Vural

She was sm Irma it is not even healthy anymore xD I once read an interview with Esra in which she said how much she enjoyed voicing Irma and you really FEEL that when you hear her. She got all the emotions so right as if she really was the character herself.

Memorable roles: Another very Irma-like character she voices was Clawdeen Wolf from MH. She is also the German voice actress of Ashley Tisdale. (And now compare a Sharpay Evans to Irma Lair – NO similarities and still she got both characters on point!).

Taranee: Marie-Luise Schramm

Oh, my baby! She makes Taranee such a cute sweetheart. She really catches Taranee’s nervous personality in all the little scenes so well. I think I am more a fan of her acting frightened than the brainy part because the first one makes Taranee sm human if that makes sense? She has got her flaws and still keeps on fighting. And Marie-Luise catches those emotions very well imo.

Memorable roles: Toph Bei Fong from Avatar (also MY GIRL) but she does sm stuff

Cornelia: Anna Predleus

Now, while Cornelia has got a mature voice in almost EVERY dub, the German dub was like: Hell no? She’s the shopping girl? She’s blonde? She needs a high voice. But..it works? Like people complain that Cornelia was too much of a bitch in the show, agreed but she still has got a brain and is still very mature and smart? I mean being a shopping girl doesn’t automatically make you dump. I guess they made Cornelia that way in the show because she was pretty unlikeable in the comics – especially in the first issues. So in the show she might have been bitchy but at least she still was FUN lol. So that is why I like Anna’s voice as Cornelia, yes it is no deep voice but it still fits the character in a different way. I also really liked her acting when it came to Elyon’s situation.

Memorable roles: Especially from my childhood: Gemini Stone from Sabrina – The animated series and Gina Lash from Angela Anaconda xD

Hay Lin: Carmen Katt

Now, she is the only one which I only connect with Hay Lin. Her voice was pretty high and “airy” but still might seem more mature than in other dubs. She really got the weird character of Hay Lin very well and I really like how she feld inside the character if that makes sense? Like, Hay Lin always got that little side-kick quotes and Carmen wasn’t simply reading them out but putting a lot Hay Lin spirit and it - is a bit like in Irma’s case – she really WAS Hay Lin. Like, she was the whole person, all emotions all states Hay Lin went through were on point. Be it her being very enthusiastic about being a guardian, or doing her art stuff or being hopeless in s2 when Yan Lin becomes brainwashed by Nerissa. I love her sm, my little baby girl. (Yes, I LOVE HAY LIN WHO WOULD HAVE THOUGHT THAT).

Memorable roles: I just looked her up and was like WTF she voiced Cleo de Nile (fhjdjsjlskl) from MH and RIAS GREMORY IN HIGHSCHOOL DXD  xD  and also Raven Queen in Ever After High. Lol, this women has got talent.

 And last but not least I want to talk about ELYON

Elyon: Julia Meynen

Omg, she was SO on POINT. I know, I said that before but Julia as Elyon OMG. I really LOVE how she got the emotions of the lost and angry Elyon in episode 01.14 Parent’s Night. Like, she can go from super friendly and cutesy to absolute terrifying mad like she is in 01.23 when confronting the guardians. She plays Elyon from the nice bf of Cornelia to the brainwashed princess and Julia played is so believable. Again, I use the word emotions here a lot, but Julia’s job as Elyon really gives me goose bumps.

Memorable roles: As for my childhood I’d put here Honoka Yukishiro from Pretty Cure and Sunburst from Barbie: Magic of the Rainbow and also Mami Tomoe from Puella Magi Madoka Magica.

Of course ALL voice actors if W.i.t.c.h. are GREAT and I will come back to this topic on day 19 xD

Let’s start with Dreamcatcher.  

Jiu is vampire tokki Tokki to represent her cuteness and vampire to represent her... oof-ness. Vampire because esp after you and i she was constantly wiping her mouth with the back of her mouth like she was a vampire. Tokki cuz that’s her animal. 

Sua’s main tag true leo is pretty self explanatory. aliphant is a combination of her english name alice and elephant her favorite animal and I use it when she’s being silly

Siyeon is gorgeous cutie gorgeous for oof-ness cutie for cuteness. sitting pretty because somehow she looks amazing even when she’s lounging around. Like she makes sitting looks so interesting and beautiful.

Handong is knowing eyes it’s kinda literal? She has heavier eye so always has a knowing look in her eyes? But it’s also a little not literal? (lol I’ve actually wrote this out before so this is a copy paste) So, Handong has a very classy/elegant vibe but she doesn’t feel unapproachable and I think it’s because of her eyes? There’s a playful mysteriousness there that’s daring you to get closer and follow her. So there’s this juxtapostition of her classy aura/appearance that seem unattainable and her warm eyes that give you hope that maybe she isn’t unattainable. 

Yoohyeon is tol koala because even thought she’s the tallest member she’s always clinging to someone. That’s just a cute tag I haven’t thought of a oof tag for her yet

Dami is panda prince because that’s her associated animal (cute) and she is dc’s prince (oof)

Gahyeon has a cute tag baby! and and oof tag come thru maknae. And actually this scream marks the first era where I have tagged her more with come thru maknae than baby! and I’m a little emotional about 😭

Kim Lip is my daughter she’s my bias, I love her a lot so I decided she’s my daughter now. 

Which makes Olivia Hye’s tag pretty funny cuz she’s my lil baby sister sometimes followed by the tag whom i love and adore. So I am the youngest sibling but I decided that I would give up my youngest sibling standing to have her be my little sister cuz she’s precious (even if she’s a maknae on top)

Victor feels Yuri’s disappointment – his frustration at wanting to perform to his utmost capacity – as keenly as Yuri, himself.  These are emotions he likely hasn’t had to experience in quite some time.  Observe his inner dialogue:

“Dunno.  Don’t really care.”

Victor reflects on having been able to surprise everyone when he approached every program like a new beginning.

However, he was running out of new beginnings; lacking in inspiration from a routine existence.  

The quote in this cap is telling.  Victor was wrong about being able to find new strength on his own. 

Yep.  Becoming Yuri’s coach has benefited Victor and Yuri, both.

Probably a pep talk on how perfectionism stands in the way of greatness.  But that’s just a suggestion.

Yay, we get more of the skaters’ back stories in this next-to-last ep.  Phichit has always been adorable.

So… did Celestino move with him to Thailand?  Is Phichit his only skater, now?

I love how Phichit draws inspiration from Yuri.  Unfortunately, the only thing keeping Yuri from fully acknowledging it is his own sense of self-worth.

This is Lilia speaking. Why Yuri isn’t reflecting on this himself as he skates – like the rest of his competitors do – I’ve no idea.

So, this is an interesting POV from Yakov.  Lilia mentions in a voiceover how people shine brightest when they seek to understand what kind of love sustains them.  During a section of Yurio’s routine, Yakov can’t help but subconsciously compare him to Victor.  This has several implications, IMO: one being that Yakov’s love for Victor was a source of strength for Yakov, himself.  Another is that Yakov had never seen Victor shine brighter than when skating. That’s… rather sad, actually, because we know that competing began to eventually drag Victor down.

Yet another implication is that Yurio is the next generation’s Victor.  This deserves more elaboration; probably in ep. 12 commentary.

Victor’s attention is arrested by the rest of the skaters, which is a blow to Yuri’s self-confidence. What Yuri doesn’t understand is that Victor is so sure of Yuri’s new trust in his decisions that he doesn’t feel the need to constantly reassure him.  For perhaps the first time in the series, Victor has taken the time to really appreciate the athletes as a spectator.

However… Yuri is still Yuri, Victor.  YOU are a large part of that newfound trust in himself.

However…… it would help if Yuri told Victor that.  But, Yuri is still Yuri.

Sigh.

This is Chris’ house(?) I’m assuming it’s an apartment building.

I really like this music. And Otabek is a very technically skilled skater, having already shared a podium with Victor.  

He doesn’t have Yurio’s grace, so he plays to an entirely different set of strengths.

This is Yuri’s observation. And he’s right.

This is the first time Victor’s ever paid attention to Otabek, someone he competed against and who medal-ed just beneath him and Chris.  LOL! This is growth for him, actually. However, Yuri (being Yuri) feels inadequate in comparison.

This isn’t pro-wrestling, JJ.

Wait a sec… what’s Otabek doing in JJ’s thoughts?  Why, it’s almost as if JJ feels threatened by him.  Inneresting.

Wow, people certainly make lifetime commitments at a young age in this universe.  JJ is only 19 or so?  Yuko’s only two years older than Yuri.  And Yuri himself… well half the series is about him and his soulmate.

Why Cinderella Is Important To Me, an Informal Essay

There are some feminists who are vocal opponents of Disney princesses like Cinderella. Before I really go into why Cinderella is important (to me), I think it’s important to recognize that without the work of the feminists of the 60s/70s/80s/90s...etc., the world would truly be a worse-off place, and I am FOREVER grateful for all of their contributions. The world is not perfect, and neither is feminism. Older feminists got (and continue to get) a lot of important, good things right, but some of their views concerning Disney princesses in general rubs me the wrong way. (The article linked is from 2006, so take it with a grain of salt. I will reference this later.) 

I think there are some key generational differences in feminist culture of women who were born in the 70s versus women who were born in the 80s, and certainly for all women moving forward. When we are born into a society with a set standard (whatever that standard may be), we respond in a different way, and our priorities/activist attention will be centered on other issues. I recommend that everyone read this really good take by Anne Marie Slaughter concerning women, the workplace, and living. This article does a better job at explaining this than I could ever possibly hope to do. 

I don’t like to block-quote, but this is POWERFUL stuff from Anne Marie Slaughter: 

I owe my own freedoms and opportunities to the pioneering generation of women ahead of me—the women now in their 60s, 70s, and 80s who faced overt sexism of a kind I see only when watching Mad Men, and who knew that the only way to make it as a woman was to act exactly like a man. To admit to, much less act on, maternal longings would have been fatal to their careers. But precisely thanks to their progress, a different kind of conversation is now possible. It is time for women in leadership positions to recognize that although we are still blazing trails and breaking ceilings, many of us are also reinforcing a falsehood: that “having it all” is, more than anything, a function of personal determination.

Okay, now to the fun stuff. 

Let me summarize Cinderella:

Cinderella (Cindy) is a rich, privileged girl who lives with her single-parent father because her mother died when she was just a baby. Cindy lives in a de-facto castle with a Pony. Her dad is hella rich, and since he adores her, she’s probably the sole beneficiary. 

The dad feels guilty that Cindy doesn’t have a mom and then unilaterally decides to marry some woman for the sole purpose of having her act as a mother to his kid. Note: in the Disney movie, it’s expressly stated that Cindy’s dad went out looking for a mom replacement - nothing more. 

The dad dies. Cindyis then “abused and humiliated” by the stepmother and made into a servant in her own home. 

Cindy’s room is in the servant quarters. She hangs out with rodents and birds and basically lives at the whim of her terrible stepfamily. She has no life and does menial labor for people who make her life miserable. 

But One Day, there’s this Ball she wants to go to, and her stepmom is terrible human being who taunts Cindy by saying she can go if she has a dress. Note: this serves two purposes - (1) it’s a way of saying no; and (2) it’s a way of rubbing it in Cindy’s face that she has nothing and is nothing. 

Big theme that’s always repeated and is relatively true is that Cindy stays “kind and good” throughout all of this and perseveres through sheer “goodness” of her heart. Because she’s “kind and good” to the animals, they make a dress for her using the scraps luxury goods lying around the house. 

The stepsisters assault Cindy and rip the dress from her body. This is violent and humiliating, and tbh you should be locked up if you pull this shit! Anyway, they stepfam leave for the ball after twisting the knife and Cindy is miserable and probably at the Brink. 

Important: The Fairy Godmother makes an appearance and saves the day. I want to stress that it is not the prince who ends up saving Cinderella, but rather the Fairy Godmother. Without FairyG, you don’t have a happy ending. 

The Fairy Godmother is the one who presents the magical Deus Ex Machina for Cindy to get her life for one night. But FairyG knows that Cindy is a hot girl who’s been thoroughly sheltered for her entire life, so she gives a curfew of midnight. “The magic will wear out” is such bullshit tbh like just say you don’t want Cindy out too late. 

Cindy loses 1 slipper in her rush to get home, and that sets off the whole Find Cindy arc of the last 1/3 of the movie. 

The prince is so fucking into Cindy omg. He wants to wife her. 

Eventually, the search crew gets to Cindy’s place, but stepmom catches wind that Cindy might be mystery gal. Cindy gets locked in the tower but she breaks free due to the help from her animal friends!!

Stepmom trips the guy holding the glass slipper, causing the slipper to SHATTER so that Cindy doesn’t put it on. But stepmom is a cuck who doesn’t know Cindy is a real bitch with a backup plan. 

Cindy pulls out the spare shoe she has, puts it on, and we montage to the marriage scene and happily ever after. 

The supposed message that is distasteful to a lot of people is that Cinderella is a girl who doesn’t have a dream outside of marriage and aspires to being someone’s wife as her ultimate goal. She escapes one servitude for another. In THIS article, which I linked above as well, the author says this about Cinderella when she talks to her daughter: “It’s just, honey, Cinderella doesn’t really do anything.” 

Cinderella’s "Passivity” Explained: 

Now I agree with a lot of things in that article, but I am purposely pulling out that one quote because it Pisses Me Off when people categorize Cinderella as some jobless shut-in. 

Cinderella wasn’t like this by choice. Her dad died when she was too young to be independent, and her new guardian was a terrible human being who basically kept her around for inheritance purposes. Cindy was not financially independent, nor did she have any power. Let’s really consider her background!!! If her father thought that she “needed” a mother, he probably never taught her anything about finances or her rights (assuming we’re in an era where those existed). Like... I can see he loved her very much, but what it’s a very 1950s thought to assume your kid needs both a mother and a father. (Cinderella was released in 1950 LOL.) 

So Cinderella’s real problems started because her dad made incredibly poor choices related to co-parenting. And for all of the stepmother’s faults, maybe it pissed her off that she was only being wifed because this guy wanted her to act as a glorified nanny for his brat. The stepmother is still terrible though, no excuses. Anyway, it’s evident that Cinderella’s childhood and adolescence were not happy times, and she had very little time to adjust to this new world order.

“Good and Kind” is Misleading: 

Cinderella is part of the union of Nice Princesses, the OG3 of Snow White, Cinderella, and Aurora. You have feisty Disney princesses like Ariel, Jasmine, Rapunzel, Merida...etc., and then you have girls like Cindy. 

One of the main themes of Cinderella that they push really hard is that she’s a good person. She’s kind, hopeful, and doesn’t let the meanness of the world change her. Her purity is related to purity of spirit, where the negative circumstances around her do not turn her heart towards bitterness. Check out this song for the proof. 

I agree that she’s a good person, but throughout the movie you’ll see a lot of places where Cindy gets snarky and shady!!! I mean the FACES that she makes when her stepmother gives her ridiculous chores:

“Good and Kind” doesn’t mean she’s not sneaky when she wants to be. There’s this one scene where Cinderella drops a tray of tea in “surprise” at the news that the duke is going around testing feet sizes of all the maidens. Now, I’ve seen Cinderella balance three loads of laundry while avoiding a nasty cat who always tries to trip her. She didn’t look like she dropped it in surprise because she HARDLY jumped. I guess you can say maybe she was so out of it and surprised that nothing else registered, but my take is that she dropped it on purpose to eavesdrop on the stepmother. 

Cinderella’s version of sneaky is also kinda funny too because when she escapes the tower, she has that other glass slipper with her. A Real Bitch Is Always Prepared!!!! And she had the nerve to chirp “if it would help~~~”

I love her.

Cindy is Not Perfect:

The one thing I will say about Cindy is that she is Naive. She is Naive as HELL. She does try to believe in the goodness of all people/animals, and she gives people the benefit of the doubt. But she’s terrible at hiding her emotions when she’s happy. She’s transparent as Glass whenever she’s in a good mood, and she gets Radiant. The stepmother cannot stand this, and it kills her to see Cinderella happy. 

The only reason Cinderella gets locked in the tower right before the duke shows up with the slipper she left behind is because the stepmother notices Immediately when Cinderella is happy. The stepmom has this sixth sense for it, and she puts together two and two to figure out that Cinderella was the Mystery Gal from the ball.

The Prince is Irrelevant:

People also dislike OG3 princess movies because the prince “saves” the princess for her happily ever after. I want to stress that it was the Fairy Godmother who was the mvp in all of this. The prince is an Afterthought, and he was a happy accident for Cinderella, but the person who made it all possible was the Fairy Godmother. 

I will always say that Cinderella was craving a life, not a man.

But back up for a second because frankly... Cinderella getting with the fucking prince is Peak Revenge on her terrible stepfam. I mean you have Cinderella who has lived the better part of her life as an abused servant-orphan suddenly getting married to the prince, who will probably have political and financial power over these terrible people. Also, can the stepfam do any better than the royal family? Probably not. Even at the ending, Cinderella flat out kisses the king’s head as if he was a child. The duke is probably pissing himself over keeping her happy because she basically saved his life by pulling out that the shoe letting him complete his task successfully. She has EVERYONE in the royal family eating out of her palm.

Conclusions: 

On a personal level, I feel emotional fondness for Cinderella because she hangs in there. She endured a lot of bullshit, but she eventually got out. That’s the happy ending that gives me hope. Marriage/finding a man is not what drives satisfaction of that movie. We cheer because Cinderella gets to leave her abusers behind in the dust while living her best life.

Do you think it was stupid of Jesus to die for the villains? >> I don’t pass judgement on martyrdom. It serves a purpose.

Have you ever rebelled against God? >> Well, rebelling against some notion of God (consciously or unconsciously) is how I spent most of my adolescence and young adulthood, but I’m mostly over that now. I met different gods.

Do you believe Jesus dies on a cross to save us all? >> I think the mythical figure of Jesus Christ certainly did. Whether there was an actual man named Yeshua who did all of that is a matter of much debate, and I tend to err on the side of “probably not”. But he’s a figure of myth, which makes his historical existence pretty irrelevant either way.

Would you be happy if you died right now? Why or why not? >> Hell fucking no, what the fuck. I’m having a ball, leave me alone, Death.

Are you scared of what's going to happen when you die? >> Sure. I try not to give it too much thought, because there’s no definite answer and obsessing over it isn’t going to give me a definite answer, it’s just going to waste my fuckin time.

Have you ever asked Jesus to save you? >> Yeah, I tried that. I don’t know if he was listening or if he did anything, but I did try it.

Have you ever been baptized? If so, where were you baptized? and did it mean anything to you? >> I was baptised at age, like, 6 or 7. I vaguely remember it because the whole thing was lowkey disturbing to me at the time, but I couldn’t do anything about it. It was at an AME Baptist church in Elizabeth, New Jersey. It never did end up meaning anything significant for me, although the baptism allegory did come up again a couple of years ago, during my last todash episode.

Do you enjoy reading about Greek or Roman mythology? >> Absolutely!

Who is your favorite Greek or Roman god or goddess? >> Dionyssos.

Have you ever read the Daughters of the Moon series by Lynne Ewing? >> Never heard of it.

Do you feel like you are special? Do others treat you like you are special? >> I’m about as special as everyone else on the planet... which, as you well know, makes the whole thing a paradox. And yeah, some people treat me like that sometimes. I’m special to individuals, which is all right.

Do you enjoy reading Bible stories? >> Hell yeah, I do.

Do you believe in the Bible stories? >> I believe in their mythological potential, in the strength of parables, and in the longevity of the myths in general. I also think most of them probably relate to actual historical events, but were just mythologised.

Have you read the Harry Potter books? If yes, did you like them? >> Yeah, and I’m in the middle of a reread right now. I... I do like them, even though I spend a lot of time dissecting the worldbuilding. I wouldn’t even bother if I didn’t enjoy something about them.

What is your opinion on fantasy? Is it of the devil, or is it ok? Do you think it's good? >> I love fantasy.

Why do you think people gave the Harry Potter series such a hard time, when it's fiction? >> Because people are afraid of going against the laws of their religion; because people are afraid of losing control over their children’s spiritual lives; because it was a weird time in the world (and maybe even in mythic time) and people have been very reactionary towards media for a long time anyway. Who knows, man. It hasn’t lessened HP’s impact on culture and society, so.

Do you believe the Bible is fiction or non-fiction? >> I believe it’s myth, which exists beyond the boundaries of “fiction” and “nonfiction”.

Are you prophetic? >> I don’t know. That’s something I’d only be able to conclude in hindsight, and I haven’t really bothered looking back to find out.

Do you speak in tongues? >> Nope. I remember being really disappointed that that never happened to me in church.

Why do you think churches ignore the supernatural so often? >> It’s often about power and control. To restrict the human experience to only what the religion in question dictates as possible -- only priests can commune with God in a way that goes beyond praying into the void, stuff like that -- is to create an illusion of dependence on the church, which keeps people coming back. It’s kind of unfortunate, really. 

Would you ever go see a medium or psychic? >> Nah.

If someone were advertising "free healing miracles," would you go see them? >> I’d probably go to a revival featuring a faith healer because those look fun as shit, but I wouldn’t pay any money to them or anything. I’d just want to see, lmao.

But that doesn’t necessarily mean anything -- or it could mean that Armageddon is an allegory for all Endings, including Endings that we as humans experience all the time. That’s the fun thing about mythology, man. It is always relevant.

that Jesus is coming back? >> He’s probably hanging around right now, smoking a bowl in some backyard somewhere. Hey, the Bible only predicted (and vaguely, at that) a Second Coming. They didn’t say anything about a Third, or Fourth, or so on. He could be on his Five Hundred Thousand and Twenty-Second Coming, for all we know.

that the Blood Red Moons are significant? >> Sure, they’re significant if we make them significant. That’s our power as a storytelling species.

Previously on Part 1: You almost blushed as Jared suggested getting comfortable on the couch. Oh how you’d love to get very comfortable with him, on the couch, or the bed, even the floor. Hell, the kitchen counter even. Slipping your shoes off, you tucked your feet under you and leaned back into the soft, plush couch sighing. ‘Maybe you will get the courage to tell Jared how you feel tonight,’ you thought to yourself. 

The pizza had been ordered and eaten and the first movie had been watched. You were so nervous that you didn’t even chastise yourself for eating so much pizza. Now you and Jared were cleaning up your mess before starting the next movie. You had yet to decide on it. You had let Jared choose the first movie which had been Fantastic Beasts. You were debating between the 2007 remake of Hairspray or Grease 2.You were a huge fan of musicals, probably because you couldn’t sing a tune in key if your life depended on it.

You plopped down on the couch as you wait for Jared to exit the kitchen. You decided on Hairspray so you popped the blu-ray into the player and patiently waited for Jared.

He came back from the kitchen, drying his hands on a towel, and plopped down next to you. “So, what is the verdict?” he asked as he smirked. He pretty much knew which movie you had decided on. What he didn’t know, nor did you, was how much the viewing of the movie this time around was going to be so emotional to you. Everything with Hunter was still at the forefront of your mind.

“You’ll see,” you replied with a small smile as you leaned against Jared’s side. You inhaled sharply when he slipped his arm around your shoulders and pulled you closer to him.

As Good Morning, Baltimore started, you began to sing along as you unknowingly started tapping your fingers on Jared’s knee.

You never noticed Jared watching you slyly as you began to tense and your eyes teared up listening to Amber Van Tussle tease Tracy Turnblad. You never realized how much Amber had bullied Tracy until this breakup with Hunter. Plenty of what he had said to you mirrored what Amber was saying in the movie.

Suddenly, you felt a large warm hand on your shoulder squeezing slightly. You looked over to find Jared staring at you with concern in his eyes as he paused the movie. You watched as his hand slowly reached up to tuck a long strand of hair behind your ear. You shivered as his fingers lightly caressed your ear with this movement hoping that Jared wouldn’t take notice. But when he looked in your eyes, you realized that he had seen your reaction.

“Hey, Y/N,” he said softly, “honey, I know something is going on with you. I have sensed it since you came back from hiatus.”

Your eyes widened as Jared confronted you, ”Excuse me?”

Jared grasped both your hands in his large ones and squeezed, “Please, you know I’m a good listener and I really care about you. I don’t like that you haven’t been smiling the last few weeks. It breaks my heart to know something has caused this.”

Your breath hitched in your throat as you considered what Jared was saying. You looked down at your adjoined hands. Your heart was telling you to just tell him everything. Your head was saying hell no. He’d only think you were weak and pathetic.

You felt his hand on your chin pulling y/e/c eyes to meet his, “Please.”

That pleading tone made your resolved break and you made a split second decision and allowed your tears to begin to fall. Jared grabbed you, engulfing you in his arms. You could feel your tears wetting the front of his tee shirt. Snot began to run out of your nose. You were horrified when Jared reached up to wipe your nose making you sob harder than before. You felt him tighten his hold on you, allowing you to feel the warmth coming from his body. Once you began to calm down, Jared grabbed your face in his hands, gently wiping away the slowly stopping tears that were still streaming down your face, “Baby, please, you know you can talk to me. I promise it is just between you and I.” You startled in surprise at being called baby. None of your previous boyfriends had ever used that term of endearment.

Bracing yourself for your confession and Jared’s possible look of disappointment, you began to talk, “Well, my ex-boyfriend, Hunter, broke up with me right before hiatus ended.”

Jared was surprised to hear that you had an ex-boyfriend. Not that he didn’t think you dated, but you had never mentioned it and you were pretty much a very open person on set, or at least he had thought so.

Jared rubbed your back lovingly as he urged you to continue, “Uh, well, you see,” you continued, “He didn’t like that I was spending so much time on set cooking for everyone else instead of him. He also didn’t like that I had decided to take some additional cooking classes online which took up most of my spare time.”

Jared nodded his head affirmatively waiting for you to continue. He knew the hardest part of what you were going to say was next on your lips.

You unconsciously shuffled closer to Jared seeking more warmth from his body. Your body hoping that being that close to him would keep you grounded. With another deep breath, you proceeded talking, “Uh, he said I had gained weight over the past year.” You paused in your storytelling to gage Jared’s reaction but he was just staring at you intently waiting for you to finishing speaking, “He said I was fat. Too fat for him.”

Jared had to restrain himself from screaming at Y/N that she was not fat - she was beautiful just the way she was.

“I am,” you stated defeatedly, “Hunter’s right. That’s why every boyfriend I ever had has broken up with me.”  

“Is that why you never told any of us that you had a boyfriend?” Jared said with a pleading tone. He was hoping that you wouldn’t say yes to that question.

You hesitated in answering, “I guess so. None of my boyfriends ever wanted to come see me on set. They had their own careers and friends that they spent time with yet they faulted me when we didn’t spend enough time together.”

Your mind began to remember arguments you had with your exes and you slowly began to realize that they always blamed you for everything. They got sick...it was your cooking. They overslept...you forgot to wake them up. They had nothing to wear...you hadn’t done his laundry. The list was endless.

“Look at me,” Jared probed cautiously, “you are beautiful.” You continued to shake your head no. “Yes, you are,” Jared pleaded, “How can I make you believe that? No matter what you’ve ever looked like, you’ve always been exceptionally beautiful and a ray of sunshine.”

You sighed heavily, “I don’t know.” You were growing more embarrassed by the moment. None of your boyfriends were ever as gorgeous, yet as kind as Jared. No one like Jared ever paid attention to you. You quickly realized that you had been settling for the douchebags you had been dating. But your mind still battled your heart, one telling the other that you didn’t deserve happiness, then the other screaming back that you were a beautiful person who deserved as much happiness as possible.

You snuck a glance up at Jared’s face, gazing into his hazel eyes, searching for something but you didn’t know what. Before you had a chance to react, you watched Jay slowly lean forward causing your heart to palpate excitedly. As much as you wanted him to kiss you, you knew that wasn’t going to happen. At best, Jared was going to give one of his signature Padalecki full body hugs.

You jumped slightly when you felt Jared’s hands cupping your face, his thumbs rubbing over your upper lip. Unconsciously, you opened your mouth and slipped your tongue out feeling Jared’s thumb graze your tongue. Without hesitation, you groaned deep in your throat. Before you could respond to the sensations coursing through your body, you felt Jared’s lips cover yours. His tongue sought entrance to your mouth and you obeyed immediately. You reached your hands up threading them through Jared’s luxurious brunette locks. He quickly pulled you onto his lap as you resisted at the same time. You were too fat to be sitting on his lap. You had never done this with any of your other boyfriends. You tried wiggling out of his lap while your lips were still attached to his. His tongue was mapping the inside of your mouth at a slow and agonizing pace. You felt Jared’s arms tightened around you as he growled ‘no’ into your mouth.

You knew this was wrong. Jared just felt pity for you. He was just being a good friend to you. A good friend who just happens to be kissing you wonderfully. What you didn’t know is that Jared was throwing caution to the wind and going for what he wanted - you.

Jared ripped his lips from yours as his hands traveled down your ticklish sides and came to rest on your hips. You could feel his prominent bulge directly underneath your core. You knew your panties were soaked with arousal and the urge to rub against Jared’s bulge was growing increasingly stronger by the second. But, a man is just a man. It was a natural reaction to have an erection after the kissing session Jared just participated in.

Jared leaned forward resting his forehead against yours, searching your eyes, “You still don’t believe me, do you?” He silently waited for you to answer. He could see you swallow heavily as a panicked look appeared in your eyes.

“Don’t answer that,” Jay replied, “Will you believe this? I. LOVE. YOU.”

Your eyes widened in surprise as your breath was stolen from your body. Your mouth gaped open trying to formulate a response.

Jared continued, “I. WANT. YOU. ALWAYS and FOREVER.” accenting each word with emphasis and a slight bit of Texan twang, “I can see it in your eyes, Y/N. This is not a joke. This is real life. These are my feelings, putting it all on the line. I have loved you since the moment you walked onto set in Season 9. I was so afraid to say anything to you. I was afraid you would reject me.”

“Reject you?” you stuttered, “Who would ever do that to you?”

Jared sighed before he responded, “I’m just glad that other woman did because God meant for me to meet you. For you to meet me. I truly believe it was fate.”

Jared grinded his hips upwards towards your aroused core, “Feel what you do to me?”

Slowly you nodded your head as Jared continued, “That is all you. You are a beautiful, vibrant, sexy, fun-loving, amazing woman. You are not fat. Never let anyone tell you that! I love your body. I always have. Damn, woman, I don’t think you know what you do to me day after day on set. Jensen is always teasing me. Wanna know how many times I’ve had to run to my trailer during resets so I could relieve myself? Screaming your name? Wishing you were sucking my cock? Visit anxiety? Lol  4-29-17

Today has been good so far. I am handling it. Life I mean. Good times ahead, generally means mixed up emotions for me. I don’t know why, but I am realizing that it is a pattern.

So, as I touched on briefly yesterday, we finished our job up, which required us to work a little later than normal, but it also helped ensure that we would finish early. We did come under hours by the way. Now when I left the job, between a bit of confusion, and the fact that they really liked the work we did, they debated whether or not to add some additional work to their backyard, a shared fence, so I left them with my cell number.

They did decide to have the extra work done, which they called as I was writing last night’s entry. Lol So I got up and went in this morning. Between loading up and the actual work done, well it was a decent chunk of money for the few hours it took it me to do it. I, by myself, was done around 10:30am.

I plan to stay in for the remainder of the weekend, aside from a little trip to the store tomorrow. I will count my work today as my “walk” on the weekend, which usually is only an hour or so anyway. Plus, today, for whatever reason, has been the worst as far as wanting to smoke. The only time I shook the craving was when I napped for those couple of hours after I got home. I don’t especially know why it’s been so bad today though.

As I get closer to my visit home, I think I am getting more anxious and more homesick, and I don’t fully understand that either. Lol It can’t help, with the smoking thing. I also spoke to my youngest son, and he wants to change up his stay, which, although it makes me a little sad, is also very understandable, as he is now an 18-year-old out of school, and possibly giving way to a special interest. I am not going to speak too much on this, at least until I know more, for his sake mainly. Give you three guesses what would supersede coming out here with dad though, and you’ll only need one. Lol I am very proud of him though. He still wants to come out for sure, probably for a few weeks for the comic-con. I told him we can talk more about it when I visit.

I should be back in Missouri this time next week. Not a lot of set plans, aside from the main event, which is my son’s graduation, and much of my little bit of traveling while there is at the mercy of my loved ones. I can’t wait to see everyone, and meet my grandson, and see my granddaughter again, plus, my momma, my boys, the girls, my family. Man I miss them all so. . . . .

Plus Guardians of the Galaxy at an IMAX while I’m there!!!

Not too long after I get back, the cousin should be back from overseas, which will help some and I imagine we will stay busy as much as we can.

I guess that’ll do it. I am still living in eternal gratitude. I never imagined being able to afford to fly anywhere, and now with my life on track, it seems like I should be on frequent flyer plan! Lol
