Miraculous Fic Recs
Recently I've been complaining a lot on the internet how sucky the recent seasons of ML have been, and how much better the old fanfics are; I'm going to prove my point by sharing my tried-and-true rec list. Here we go.
Back To Us - Written in 2017, so some things are inaccurate. Basically Marinette, as Ladybug, kills Gabriel Agreste on accident by pushing him off the Eiffel Tower and Adrien moves to Milan. Seven years later Marinette is a rising fashion designer, her long-lost partner comes back seven years later but hot, and a new Hawkmoth shows up on the very day Adrien comes back. Suspicious. INCLUDES: Antihero!Chat. Alternate superhero names for Alya, Nino + there are only seven miraculouses which honestly I like a lot better than Ladybug just busting another one out whenever she feels like it. At one point, it was the longest fic in the fandom but now it's not even close. 446k. Requires an Ao3 account to read.
Second Chances- Again, written fairly early in the fandom. Adrien is a single dad and Alya volunteers Marinette to be his daughter's nanny - the premise sounds like it could turn out really weird but I promise it's not. Adorable adorable. INCLUDES: Past ChloexAdrien and MarinettexNathanael, and Adrien never went to school. Reverse best friends (Alya + Adrien, Mari + Nino). 105k.
Whose Woods These Are (I Think I Know) - Ladrien Cinderella AU. Super well-written in a kind of fairytale style. I honestly love this fic. 105k.
Spotty Connections - Adrienette texting fic (no miraculous AU, but does incorporate LadyNoir). Tikki & Plagg are M&A's cats. One of my favorites ever. 66k.
Film It - Adrien is a youtuber! Soon all of Twitter ships #adrienette. INCLUDES: Gabriel Agreste's A+ Parenting. Endgame Adrienette. Superheroes exist, but LB & CN aren't a huge part of this. Also worthy of note: #thatfoursome and a decent amount of Twitter formatting. This has pretty much everything I want in an Adrienette fic. 56k.
Chasing The C/h/atwalk - Project Runway AU. Marinette is a designer and Adrien... is her model. Shenanigans ensue. INCLUDES: Some LadyNoir, mostly after the identity reveal. #MarinetteInDenial. 100k. I love this fic.
Lucky Us - No Miraculous email AU. See Spotty Connections: LadyNoir incorporated without the actual superheroes. Fluff with a tiny bit of angst but still happy ending. 136k.
Secret Santa - fluff. Pure fluff; classic in the fandom. A bit cheesy and very outdated but very nice. Time for a reread. It has a sequel called New Year's Ball. 52k.
Être Majeur - horror, AU, fairly short, creepy and strange but really well-written. 24k. M for horror elements.
La Pucelle Et La Coccinelle - Absolute favorite. Explores Joan of Arc (Jeanne d'Arc in this story) with the Ladybug Miraculous. INCLUDES: Actual historical references, lore for the miraculouses, and a flashforward to the future at the end with Marinette. 38k. I have it printed out, I love it so much.
Pray For the Children You Lost Along the Way - Silent Hill AU (Emilie Anderson from the arcade game is Adrien's mom). It has been on hiatus since 2019, but is still worth a read because so many things tie together in a satisfying way. 86k. Rated M b/c of Silent Hill-type things.
Under Lock and Key - Huge classic also published on Wattpad. Author/artist collab with Maerynn & EdenDaphne - Maerynn passed away while the fic was being written and ED finished it. Very nice art by ED. I view this fic as the quintessential 2017 era Adrienette fic. Very sweet and fluffy. 34k.
Tripped at Fencing - Gabriel hits Adrien. INCLUDES: Gabriel Agreste's A+ Parenting. Accidental identity reveal (Marinette finds out first). Only 5k but a classic.
The Butterfly and Her Brother series (Generations Past and Future) - written c. 2016. Gabriel is NOT Hawkmoth; Gabriel is not a villian in the least so technically OOC. First couple are set in the 1990s, then a couple in ~2016 and the latest in like 2044. I haven't read the last one in the series but WHATHGAWAATG (Europe gets taken over), featuring the next gen of Agrestes, is really good as well. Many things are outdated/false as this was written based off of s1, but I honestly like this interpretation of the Miraculous much better than how the show does it. Mama Agreste's name is Adele (again, s1) and I quite like her character. I freaking LOVE this series. I have it downloaded to my phone and I reread it when I'm feeling sad. 340k in total, but the longest work in the series is about 166k. SO many kudos.
a fight that you were born to lose - "Adrien finds out that Gabriel is Hawkmoth, and Gabriel gets to bring his long-waited plan into action." TW abuse, emotional manipulation, forced dieting. Gabriel Agreste's A+ Parenting. Fairly short for how well-rounded it is - 17k.
An Impromptu Proposal - what it says on the tin. Reverse love square kinda: Ladynoir requited love bc Adrien never went to school. Includes identity reveal and Hawkmoth!Lila takedown. 33k.
On The Prowl - Criminal CN. Also on ffn.net. Good story and TOTALLY a classic, but also uses 'ravenette' and 'sapphire orbs' unironically. The writing is okay if a little melodramatic. 53k.
Chat Noir's White French Man Hit List For Feminist Purposes - pretty much what it says on the tin. Sentimonster!Adrien. 7.8k.
i think it's time i told you (i'm a fan of your universe) - ladynoir proposal. v v nice. Just 5k. Smidge of angst.
The Ladyblog Comment Section - what it says on the tin. 27k. Hilarity and crack.
spark - Tinder AU. Lots of Marichat. Angst with a happy ending. 49k. Slow burn w/ eventual identity reveal.
all dressed up and nowhere to go - No Miraculouses modern royalty AU - human Tikki and Plagg. Mostly DJWifi but a mild amount of adrienette and a smidge of chlogami. Includes arranged marriage Adrien x Alya but they don't end up together. "Twenty-five-year-old Marinette is a wedding dress designer, business blooming in her trusty shop, Ladybug Bridal. When the engagement of Prince Adrien Agreste and Ancient Princess Alya Césaire is announced, all she expects is an influx of work. What she gets instead is... a bit different." 35k.
tangled ribbons - Ao3. ballet/dance AU (no miraculous). Adrienette with some DJWifi and human Tikki & Plagg. "Marinette is a small studio dancer who wins a scholarship to a summer long ballet intensive. Adrien is a famous ballet dancer who would rather be at home than at said intensive. The end of the summer will bring about a showcase that could make Marinette's career, if she can ignore Chloé and focus on something other than Adrien." 82k. The slowest of burns.
Where timing is kind to us - Ao3. marichat discusses quantum physics. 4.3k. This is a beautiful one-shot with a one-sided reveal.

on a night like this [MLB]
Tumblr media
summary:
“Hey,” Chat starts off. “Hypothetically… if you liked someone-” “I do like someone.” “Since you like someone,” Chat continues. “How do you act with them?” “Hm?” “What are you like when you like someone?” he said. “I’m curious. Since I’ll never get to see it, it’s only fair you at least share the information, don’t you think?” (Alternatively… Chat indulges in his curiosity to find out what the girl of his dreams is like when she likes someone, only to realize it sounds oddly familiar.)
author’s note:  fun fact this started as a drabble but ended up with me itching so bad to write and ensure that i haven’t lost all my skill in writing so it is now what it is... alternatively me feeling very self conscious about the quality of this compared to other things i’ve written on here but still wanting to write about two superhero teenagers and the weight of their lives and identities
also reposted on ao3
Quiet nights were Chat Noir’s favorites.
That wasn’t to say he didn’t enjoy the job of crime fighting, or of course, the moments after he’d done the work well enough to warrant applause and attention… but quiet nights had found themselves to be special to Chat Noir. In the still of the night, while still wrapped up in magical latex, there was a way to exist as both a boy and a superhero.
It was in these moments when he had nothing to do and nowhere to be at all, that he found himself thinking as Adrien and Chat Noir both at once. Did he finish tomorrow’s homework? Would Hawkmoth akumatize that crying woman on the street right now? Oh, was fencing in tomorrow’s schedule? Did he need to increase patrol nights after the last surge of villains?
It was a strange experience, to exist as two people, all the more strange to exist as them simultaneously. Adrien didn’t understand at times where he began and where Chat Noir ended.
“How different do you think you are?” he began. “To Ladybug?”
Contrary to what anyone else might think, it was harder to start conversations for Chat Noir while not out of breath and jumping from rooftop to rooftop. When he was forced to think only as his superhero self, there were a plethora of things he could find himself wanting to say to Ladybug in the heated moments of battle. She would respond in a beat too.
Now, with the luxury of all the time in the world and the chance to be both who he had always been and recently become, he found himself stumbling over awkward starter questions and pretentious sounding attempts at heartfelt conversations.
“You mean my not-Ladybug self to my Ladybug self?” her chirpy voice answered behind him. Chat Noir listened to the way her feet would land so delicately from rooftop to rooftop on quiet patrol nights, almost carefully as if she could fall from the wrong step. The way she moved when they fought, with all eyes on them, to now was starkly different.
“Yeah. Your everyday self.”
“That’s a little invasive, don’t you think?” Ladybug answered with a laugh.
Chat Noir rolled his eyes. “Come on, I can at least ask this much about you! Or would you rather doom me to isolating thoughts about this very abnormal life I live, who only one other person in this world would understand?”
“Don’t put it that way. You have Plagg,” Ladybug offered with an amused glint in her eyes.
“You think he can take his attention off whatever nasty smell is around him for more than ten minutes to console me on my identity crises?” Chat Noir laughed. It was not completely true that Plagg was so apathetic to Adrien’s confusion to his double-existence. Plagg had been more attentive of Adrien’s thoughts than any family in his house, though there was only so much a kwami could understand about a human’s mind.
There was a noticeable change to Ladybug’s demeanor when she spoke next. “Oh. Do you regularly experience an identity crisis?” she asked, her brows furrowing. “Has everything been okay?”
“You don’t need to worry, it’s not like that. Identity crisis is an overstatement.”
“Well, then?”
Adrien’s head looked down at the streets as the two stopped alongside the edge of a building. In the daytime, he too roamed around these alleys and paths, though as a completely different person. On nights like these, he found himself flying across skies.
“Living as two different people is something I’m still understanding,” he confessed. “One moment, I’m thinking about something so ordinary and human, like an assignment I have or cleaning my room. Next moment, the city’s under attack and I’m thinking about what I have to do in the next half hour to stop the deaths of hundreds of people,” he turned to Ladybug. “It feels like I’m living a human experience, then suddenly, it doesn’t… not that I’m saying Chat Noir is not a human or something! I don’t think I’m above anyone or anything, you know, I just- ah, where was I going with this?”
Ladybug smiled. Chat Noir loved that smile. “Don’t worry. I get it,” she said. “I'm probably the only other person in the world who gets it, right?”
He laughed sheepishly. “Something like that.”
She pointed to the next building in view after scanning the streets carefully. Chat Noir wondered if she, too, felt like two versions of herself existed on nights like this, while watching over the city with no imminent danger. Did she too feel like her mind was louder tonight, with the voices of two separate worlds?
Chat Noir swung from his metal stick from one rooftop to the next, with the ease of the movement feeling akin to walking. He landed on his feet perfectly. Something that looked so marvelous on television to others was just a simple repeated motion for him. As simple as catching a ball or jumping up.
Ladybug followed, landing behind him seconds later. “It’s not easy for me either. The way I have to think when I’m not in this suit is very different to the way I think when I’m fighting. No one in my life suspects I’m Ladybug either, despite some close calls, and honestly? Sometimes, that makes it worse. It makes it feel like I really am two different people, and I’m lying to my other self when I’m in the suit… I’ve wished for people to suspect me of being Ladybug sometimes, as awful as that sounds. Just so it would cure this.”
Chat Noir swallowed. “Oh. That different?”
“Maybe to the people who know me?” she shrugged and paused. After a moment, she hesitated to ask a question before finally indulging in it. “What about you? Would it be that much of a shock to the people who know you if they knew you were this whole other person?”
At first, Chat Noir’s immediate thought was no. He could see maybe his father being a little taken aback that his proper and polished model-citizen son was the same playful latex-wearing superhero. But Nathalie might see it as what it was – a perfect outlet for the parts of Adrien that never appeared elsewhere. His friends, Nino and the rest of the boys from school, too might not find it too surprising. The two halves of him bled into each other so seamlessly.
But then, Chat Noir thought of, strangely enough to him, a classmate who he had always worked hard to show his best self to - his kindest, most well-behaved, most perfect Adrien self he could be. Would Marinette find it believable that rowdy Chat Noir was really Adrien? She would probably lose a lot of admiration for him, he was sure.
He sighed. “I think my other self might be more preferable to some people,” he said, thinking too of the many fans Adrien Agreste had.
“Wow. You must really be all that,” Ladybug laughed. “I don’t think my civilian self could ever compare to Ladybug. She’s definitely the winner between the two versions of me.”
Chat Noir wasn’t sure what to say to that. Would it be worse to live like Ladybug, being preferred for his Chat Noir self or remain as himself? Questions like these came to his mind almost daily now.
“I think tonight seems good. We can end it here,” Ladybug offered, halting to a stop.
The end of a quiet night so soon, his favorite type of night, made Chat Noir let out a sigh. He would have to return home and think only as Adrien now till the world called for him again. He bent, ready to perch.
“But you don’t have to leave… so soon,” a cough interrupted his departure. Chat Noir turned to see Ladybug sheepishly staring out and seated down on the edge.
He blinked. It was rare to witness Ladybug want to cling onto being Ladybug any minute longer than she had to. Chat Noir fought the blossoming feeling of hope that he was the reason for her delaying her return. It’s just a friendly gesture, nothing more. Don’t ruin it.
“More identity crises to discuss?” he grinned before jumping down next to her.
“Oh, don’t start any more of that. You’ve given me a month’s worth of burden to unpack in my brain now,” she said. “If I was just Ladybug, like some of these superheroes in movies, who lived just to exist as a superhero, it would be so easy. Instead, I have a whole other life to think about at the same time, and then all this reflection on who I really am between these two people.”
Chat Noir nodded. “It helps me to think of what’s the same between them. Between Chat Noir and my civilian self, I mean. It kind of makes me understand how I can be both at once.”
That idea seemed to resonate with Ladybug. Chat felt pleased at how she blinked, deeply in thought, before turning to him.
“Can I trust you to very carefully share some similarities without compromising your identity and making me regret giving into my curiosity?”
He grinned. “Wow. So you do wonder about me too.”
“Don’t push it, kitty.”
“Well, for starters, since you asked so nicely, I have to share that my first similarity is I am so unbelievably handsome and charming in both selves.”
“I’m already regretting,” mumbled Ladybug, covering her face. “Forget it. I am no longer curious.”
Chat Noir laughed. Her exasperation, though he’d never let her know it, was just as delightful to watch as her moments of brilliance during fights. There were so many sides to Ladybug that captivated Chat Noir, ones that he discovered every day and night.
Quiet nights, especially. Quiet nights were his favorites, because she looked even more striking and beautiful when being accompanied by the scenery of a dark sky.
“Okay, okay. I think the easiest similarity is that I enjoy mischief just as much in my civilian self. But I can’t show that as much in that life as I can in this. It helps to be Chat Noir in that way.”
“Just as much of a delinquent in civilian life. Got it,” she said with a smile playing on her lips.
“And of course, there’s the similarity of admiring you. Both my civilian self and I, we like you very much,” he pouted. “You’re our idol.”
“Is your civilian self just as bad as hiding it?” she continued smiling, amused.
“Oh, he’s much worse than me. Can’t stop raving about her and defending her. They call me Ladybug’s number one fan.”
“Can’t be. That’s the Ladyblog.”
He grumbled. “Yeah, she’s my rival,” he complained while thinking of very real arguments Alya and him had in between classes. Alya’s justification for claiming the title was that she ran the biggest outlet for Ladybug’s news, while Adrien had nothing to offer – except of course, his countless days and nights spent in Ladybug’s company that could hardly be offered as evidence. In the end, Alya was unfortunately handed the title by the judges, Nino and a very bizarrely amused Marinette.
“Please do not terrorize her,” Ladybug suddenly blinked, eyes wide as if she really couldn’t be certain if Chat Noir wouldn’t. Then, with a laugh, she added, “she’s got a whole line of people debating her for being my biggest fan.”
Chat Noir only rolled his eyes. Even as Chat Noir, it seemed that he couldn’t steal Alya’s title from her. “This is so unfair.”
“Sorry, kitty. You can try being someone else’s devoted fan?”
“Whose should I be?” he cocked a brow teasingly.
“No other Paris celebrity you like?”
“Well, there’s this person…”
“Oh, really?”
“Yeah. I don’t know her name though. Or how she looks,” he paused. “But whenever a crisis happens, she goes and transforms into this superhero… I’m a huge fan of her,” he grinned.
“After me, Chat Noir!” she laughed. “After me, who do you idolize?”
He hummed in thought, taking the question seriously now. “That’s easy.”
“So quick.”
“Yup. It’s another girl.”
Ladybug’s eyebrows shot up. She watched Chat Noir attentively for his answer.
“It’s a girl in my class, actually,” he explained. She’s really kind and she’s so smart at everything she does. I think she inspires me a lot. I feel bad about myself whenever I try to impose myself on her.”
“Why’s that?” Ladybug frowned.
“She doesn’t seem like she likes me very much. She avoids crossing paths with me and then when she does talk to me first, it’s usually something said in such a hurry so that she can quickly end the conversation,” Chat Noir sighed. “I get it though. She’s got a lot going on for her, it’s probably a waste of time to talk to me.”
“Don’t say that!” Ladybug huffed. Her frown was deeper now, embedded into the lines of her forehead. “She sounds awful. Why would you be inspired by such a terrible person?”
“Hey, don’t say that about her!” Chat Noir retorted. “She’s still one of my friends.”
“I think you can find better friends,” Ladybug grumbled before muttering, “it sounds like you have a crush on her, by the way.”
Chat Noir paused. Him liking Marinette? He doesn’t think he could ever subject Marinette to him liking her, not when she would struggle to reciprocate even a comfortable friendship with him.
“Are you jealous?” he grinned. Perhaps he was hallucinating or was the quiet night suddenly not so quiet anymore? Was that his heart pumping in his ears? Violins playing in his head?
“Don’t be silly.”
“I don’t like her, so don’t be worried,” he said. “She’s just someone I think very highly of. She’s a good person and she’s always trying to help anyone she can, with however much she has. I know it doesn’t sound that way to you, but trust me… if she had a Miraculous, I know she’d be out there doing what we do. Patrolling late at night, putting herself at risk, just so others would be fine. She’s that kind of person.”
A moment of silence passed. Chat Noir worried if he overdid it a little… that last part might’ve been a twinge too much to say. What if Ladybug took offense to it? He hoped she didn’t think he meant she wasn’t doing her job well, or that Marinette would be a better Ladybug to her.
“Are you sure you don’t have a crush?” said Ladybug. “It’s a little romantic to think of an ordinary girl as deeply as you have.”
Chat Noir blinked. “More romantic than my multiple confessions to you?!”
“I’m just saying,” she said in a sing-song voice. “You should reflect a little on that.”
“She’s just a friend!”
“It always starts off that way,” Ladybug mumbled. It was the last thing she said before the night returned to silence.
Chat Noir was left with a bizarre feeling in his chest at that. He looked over to Ladybug, only to see her looking at the sky and blinking wistfully. As selfish as it sounded, he didn’t like the idea of her being so lost in thought about someone else.
He swallowed. If Ladybug had talked about someone else the way Chat Noir spoke of Marinette, would he be able to accept it? What did that make him? Did it mean… that perhaps, his thoughts and feelings of Marinette transcended the norm of platonic respect?
No more of that. He shut down the thought as quickly as it came. Instead, Ladybug took over his attention and he watched her keep to herself. There was certainly a lot running through her mind, so much that she wouldn’t share for her own drawn lines of boundaries and safety. For once, he wished she could forego them.
There was so much more he wanted to know of her, so much more he wanted to understand about her. He wanted to watch her in her mundane life the innocent way he found himself watching Marinette sometimes – observingly and charmed. There was a whole other world of Ladybug he wanted.
“Hey,” Chat started off. “Hypothetically… if you liked someone-”
“I do like someone,” she said. Her gaze remained unmoving from the sky.
“Since you like someone,” Chat continued, placing his chin into his palm. “How do you act with them?”
“Hm?”
“What are you like when you like someone?” he said. “I’m curious. Since I’ll never get to see it, it’s only fair you at least share the information, don’t you think?”
Ladybug turned to look in surprise and laughed. The wind of the night pressed lightly against the two of them, carrying their furtive words away as soon as they were spoken. Her pigtails fluttered back and forth so delicately that Chat Noir couldn’t draw his eyes away.
“Now what is this question?” she said in bemusement. “Need to fact check your fanfiction?”
“I’ve got a point to prove to the Ladyblog on who knows Ladybug better,” he retorted.
The smile on Ladybug’s face was unwavering. Chat Noir was relieved, for he was not too certain that she wouldn’t yell at him for asking a potentially too personal question.
“What do you think I’m like?”
“Me?! You’re asking for my opinion?”
“Just out of curiosity. The whole identity crisis thing we have, remember?”
Chat grinned. What would Ladybug be like, if she liked him? That was the real question he asked himself to imagine. He’d been rejected so many times over the years that it was hard to imagine a response to his confessions being anything other than a scolding.
But if, by some miracle, he found himself presented with a Ladybug who liked him… what would she look like?
“I think you’d be upfront. Much like me, not beating around the bush, but a lot more cautious with wanting to confess at the perfect right time,” he said before reluctantly adding, “that’s probably why you haven’t asked out this guy, right?”
Ladybug sighed. “You’re right about the last part, but the reasons are all jumbled up. Oh, I’m not upfront at all. I mean, I try to be but the real me is a disaster at that.”
The real her… that’s what she called her self that wasn’t Ladybug. Chat tried not to think too deeply on what those words entailed, the possibility that the other part of her, the one he didn’t know, was far more real than Ladybug.
“You can’t be upfront with him?” he said. “Sounds like a terrible guy.”
“Watch it, he’s my friend,” she answered teasingly. “It’s not him that’s the problem. It’s me. He definitely thinks I’m so odd. Or worse… he thinks I’m rude.”
“Why would he think that?”
She sighed, and buried her face between her knees. “Ah, it doesn’t matter. No one will find someone they think weird and rude to be likable.”
“That’s not true. I’m sure it’s possible.”
“And what evidence do you have?”
Chat chewed his lip carefully. At the sign of the dejected Ladybug, he rushed to say the first bright idea he thought in his head. “The girl from my class! The one I find really amazing. She can be a little weird, even a bit rude to me at times. I still think she’s great. You know, sometimes, it’s even charming. She keeps me on my toes and she’s funny.”
Ladybug narrowed her eyes. “So you do like her?”
“Not like that!”
She simply hummed disbelievingly in response. “How do you find that to be charming?” she said. “She sounds so different from me- well, Ladybug. Aren’t I your standard?”
Chat Noir shrugged. “I think she’s pretty cool too,” he smiled. “So tell me, what is it you’re like that you’re sure he finds weird?”
Ladybug raised herself from her desolate position on the ground before starting. “Well… I’m awfully shy. I mix up words and I can’t get a sentence out without combusting. I do stupid things like run away and freak out and oh , I even steal his things from the trash that he throws away just to see if I can know more about him. I’ll start the conversation, and then I’ll give up half-way. He’s just left there! How awful!”
“Oh. Yeah, that’s happened to me before. I’m sure he doesn’t take it to heart! I always assume she’s got something urgent to do,” he gave a reassuring, broad smile. “And the trash thing… It's sweet. Hard to imagine you doing that but sweet nonetheless. You must really like him,” he said with his smile unmoving.
He hoped not to show it but his spirit shattered from hearing about Ladybug being so lovestruck by someone that she would forgo all her regular headstrong ideals and rules.
“It gets worse!” she groaned. “I’ve tripped so much in front of him. On air . Sometimes, into the grossest situations!”
“He doesn’t help you?” Chat cocked a critical brow. Whenever Marinette did similar things in front of him, he would always rush to her aid. But in his case, whenever he’d offer to help, it would only make things worse. Marinette must really dislike me.
“He does. But by then, I’m too embarrassed to accept the help,” she sighed. “He’s perfect and I’m mortified that I’m a mess like that.”
Chat Noir instantly reconsidered his previous statement. Too embarrassed to accept the help? Was that… what Marinette felt like? Was she feeling mortification to accept Adrien’s hand on the ground? It had to be, because there was no reason for her to hate him so much that she would reject him like that.
“The worst part of all is that he likes Ladybug, and I know that. He’s obsessed with her. He thinks she’s cool and she’s so strong and she’s confident, and I’m not at all like that. Especially around him.”
“He could like you and Ladybug at the same time?” Chat offered hopefully, before instantly regretting his words. Stop trying to set them up, idiot!
Ladybug slumped further into glumness. “He has someone he thinks the world of. I can’t compare to Ladybug, even if I am Ladybug,” her voice wavered. “Identity crisis sucks, right?” she attempted humorously.
Chat couldn’t bear the sight. He hated to support whoever this awful person was, but he couldn’t allow Ladybug to feel like this because of him. “You can be that Ladybug and this other person at once. He can like you and her too.”
“I hope so. I haven’t stopped trying,” she murmured. “I’ve done a lot of things.”
“Oh yeah?” he said gently. “Like what?”
“Well, one time I gave him something that was pretty special to me. I thought it would show my sincerity better than my half-mumbled sentences to him,” she said. “He made me the same thing after a while as a gift. I thought it was a really nice moment.”
Chat thought back to the lucky charm stored in the desk drawer, away from the prying eyes of Nathalie. He could understand Ladybug’s story. Even in his own life, after Marinette had given that, he was certain she didn’t actually hate him as he sometimes believed.
“I’m sure he thought well of it.”
“I hope so. I hope he still kept what I gave him.”
“He must’ve,” Chat said with certainty. “I have a story similar to that and I kept what my classmate gave me.”
“Oh,” Ladybug said strangely. “Your classmate also gave you something?”
“Yeah. Actually, now that you started talking, there are some similarities between you guys. She stumbles on her words a lot too. I thought she hated me, but I think she might just be shy. Like you.”
Ladybug blinked, suddenly looking rattled. “Does she like you?!”
“What? No, of course not!” Chat laughed. “So back to your crush?”
“I think I’ve shared enough already,” retorted Ladybug. “And whatever I say, you can’t stop relating it back to your own classmate-crush!”
“She’s not my crush, my lady,” Chat countered immediately. “I just brought her up because I thought it’d make you feel better! About you know… your own thing.”
“How would she make me feel better?”
“Well, because you’re… similar?” Chat said confidently before trailing off into a question to himself. Marinette and Ladybug similar ? No, that didn’t seem right at all.
Oh, but then why did it sound so fitting in this situation?
“I am nothing like this girl!” Ladybug puffed her lip out in anger before then groaning. “I think I’m actually much worse. I broke into his private party one time! Where I wasn’t even invited.”
Chat Noir blinked, feeling a sudden strange chill creep over his body. “I’m sure he was happy that… his friend joined,” he said. A rather odd thought settled itself into Chat’s mind, and he attempted to respond as normally as he could to Ladybug while trying to shake it out.
“Gave him the wrong note one time for a prescription instead of a love letter. Ended with him giving me constipation medicine,” she groaned before slamming her head into her palms, as if the horrifying memory was fresh.
“I’m sure… he thought it was… amusing?” Chat Noir found himself answering robotically now. Coincidences happened, right? Surely they did. Surely they had to.
Such an innocent conversation couldn’t be changing the trajectory of Chat Noir’s life as he knew it. Surely not.
“Didn’t want to be apart from him on a trip abroad one time, convinced his dad to let him come,” she continued before pausing. “In hindsight, this one’s a little bit more positive press for me. But it’s still so embarrassing! I barely knew the guy!”
Chat Noir felt every nerve, from his toes to neck, sting his body in a surreal sensation. Such an ordinary conversation, such a quiet night couldn’t be the one to change his life and yet, Chat knew this was how life was as a whole. Things could change so quickly, in a routine moment, and nothing would be the same again. That was how he’d become Chat Noir, how he’d fallen in love with Ladybug, how he’d met Marinette.
Now, it would be how he solved an identity crisis.
“What? No positive reinforcement for that one?”
Chat couldn’t find it in himself to force out an answer this time. The great Ladybug, the one who leaped off buildings every day, put herself in harm’s way at any cost, protected the historic city of Paris… Chat had imagined being loved by a girl like this would be the bravest kind of love out there.
When he was alone, and miserable, he would try to think about how Ladybug might love Chat Noir, and consequently Adrien. The image he would conjure would be of a soft, caring yet stern and attentive girl, one who wouldn’t hesitate to put him in his place but fight for every chance to keep the two of them together.
How had he been so foolish to forget that if two parts of himself existed in Paris, two parts of Ladybug existed too? Ladybug could be shy too, she could be unconfident and unsure of herself, she could be pessimistic and clumsy. She could love naively, and not the perfect way he’d imagined she would love someone.
She could love like Marinette.
“Have I scared you?!” Ladybug’s shrill voice captured Chat’s attention again. Her expression was one of distress. “I’ve overshared, haven’t I? Now, you think I’m strange and a stalker and nothing like you imagined me to be-”
“No,” he interjected immediately. “I don’t think any of these things about you at all.”
She sighed. “You don’t have to lie, I can understand if you do. I know the guy I like probably does.”
Chat felt a new kind of a smile tugging at his cheeks. It was a miracle how he hadn’t fallen off the height they were sitting at from all the revelations he was having in his head. Instead, he just felt giddy, knowing everything he did now. “He thinks you’re charming and sweet… you go out of your way for him, even though he can’t imagine deserving that from you. Even the stumbling and tripping only shows how sincere you are. You’re a good person to be loved by Ladybug in every way… even in the way that isn’t what some might think Ladybug-like.”
Ladybug looked at him strangely. “I feel like we are suddenly having two very different conversations right now.”
That didn’t wipe the smile off Chat’s face. He couldn’t quite believe his luck. There were two parts of himself that existed out there, and two parts of her that existed out there, and all of them had still found each other. Ladybug had still found herself enamored by some part of who he was, and him some part of her.
He swallowed. Truth be told, he had found himself enamored by all parts of her. Before his feelings grew for Ladybug, the moments of tenderness he felt around Marinette seemed like a threat to his self-sworn loyalty. Now that he was here, he could finally admit it. This was a person that he loved completely.
There was no person in existence who Chat thought he would ever know completely, apart from himself. Not even Plagg, who he spent hours with, or his father, who he was in this world because of. But his belief was wrong, and there was someone in his world that crossed paths with him in every way. There was someone he found himself enchanted by in every way.
Ladybug feigned a cough. “Anyway,” she said, “we are going to pretend that I didn’t reveal all that.”
“Sure,” Chat nodded. Definitely not , he thought.
She narrowed her eyes at him. He’d been trying to disguise all that had been happening in his head at the last minute, hiding his excitement and joy at realizing what he did. But despite his best efforts, he was sure Ladybug knew him well enough to tell.
“What are you smiling about, kitty?” she said sharply.
“Nothing at all. Good weather, no crime, it’s great.”
She sighed. “You find it funny, don’t you? That what I’m describing sounds like a whole other person?”
“No. That’s just how our lives work, don’t they? Identity crisis and all, Ladybug and Chat Noir are only parts of who we are,” Chat smiled. “I still think you’re great though. That whole other person you’re describing.”
Ladybug looked at him incredulously before shaking the expression off. She cocked a brow. “So, what are you like?”
“What do you mean?”
“You asked me what I’m like when I like somebody. What are you like?”
“I tell you I love you everyday.”
She shook her head. “I mean, without the mask.”
He blinked. “It’s still you I like without the mask.”
There seemed to be a small smile playing on Ladybug’s lips at that. “What would Chat Noir be like around me if he wasn’t wearing the mask?” she said. “Just as confident?”
Chat thought about it for a while. He had a sense of confidence and freedom under the mask, all of which allowed him to be so direct to Ladybug. But as Adrien Agreste?
He barely thought himself to be good enough for her as Marinette.
“No,” he answered honestly. “I’m daydreaming and thinking about how great you are all day. I’m telling all my friends how good of a person you are and trying to get closer, but never really being brave enough to take any step further. Nothing like you, going out of your way to confess.”
“Why would you do that?” she frowned.
“This is the best part of me,” he gestured. “Existing as Chat Noir is my best selling point. But you… you’re so special without Ladybug too.” His eyes softened as he looked at her, so beautiful in this sight. How could someone like her just… exist?
“That’s not true at all. I told you, I’m a mess on the other side. No one would think to compare me to the great Ladybug,” she said. “And I refuse to believe Chat Noir is the best part of you. I think all parts of you must be good, if you’re like this with a mask on.”
Chat blinked. “That crush of yours,” he said, feeling his hands suddenly clammy. “Do you think he’s that good?”
“What’s he got to do with this?” she laughed. “But just since you asked, yes. He is great.”
“What’s so good about him?”
She shrugged, suddenly confused. “He just is… he really tries to be. I’ve seen it so I’m sure,” she said, staring out with a determined look. “It’s just like you said about that girl you knew, how she’s so selfless that she’d be Ladybug if she had to. The boy I know, he worries and he cares so much that he’d be Chat Noir if he had to. He’d want to do better by this city, just as you do.”
Oh, Marinette . Chat felt like he could cry at her words. It was the biggest feat of his life, existing at these two vastly different people. It was a maze of adversity, navigating being his civilian self who was so loved and being Chat Noir, his purest, best self.
Did Marinette really believe under her mask that he as Adrien matched up to Chat Noir?
“If you think I’m all that great despite what I said about who I am when I’m not Ladybug, then you should believe the same about yourself,” Ladybug said. “You’re good, Chat Noir.”
His chest felt like it could burst with love. He had never felt more in love than he did now, existing as both Adrien and Chat Noir in the quiet.
He grinned. “Good enough for Ladybug to want to go through my trash?”
She groaned. “You ruined the moment. I absolutely regret sharing that with you, by the way and now, I want to leave,” she said, pushing herself off the ledge.
“I’ve done some pretty embarrassing things too,” he said instantly and reached for her wrist. “I stayed up a few nights to learn how to bead things together so I could make a gift for this girl I liked.”
Ladybug frowned, stilling her movement and turning slowly. “Is this that girl from your class?! You said you didn’t like her!”
“I would say I didn’t like her to every person who asked, and then try anything to talk to her,” he said. “I would spend classes arguing about how great Ladybug is, and talking about how she was my favorite person in Paris to anyone who would listen. And then, in front of everyone, I told this girl that she was just like her.”
The look of jealousy, as Chat so hopefully identified it to be, dissipated slowly from Ladybug’s face. He watched her expression transform into one of disbelief, as if she were hearing something that sounded like a familiar song from her past, though she wasn’t quite sure the melody was all the same. He imagined this is how he’d looked only a few minutes ago.
“Gave up my spot on a gaming contest because she wanted it. Told everyone it was because I didn’t really want to play anyway, but it was mostly because it was her who wanted it,” he continued, gleefully enjoying the display of shock on Ladybug’s face. “Called her specifically to fix a costume for me on a shoot, even though I had a team of designers ready. Changed plans to be inconvenient for everyone just to stop by a bakery for the off-chance to see her.”
Chat had given up being ambiguous now. He would admit, there was a kind of joy to be talking to Marinette about himself as Adrien, while they sat atop Paris as the two most important people in suits. The magic of a quiet night had brought all four people to exist as one here.
“What are you… oh my God,” Ladybug fell back to sit, her body resembling jelly as she lost control. Her eyes, wider than usual, blinked in a staggering pattern and she mumbled to herself.
“I’ve done a lot of stupid things too,” he ended. “So you’re not so alone.”
Ladybug gazed at Chat in bewilderment. Her fingers reached out ever so slightly to attempt to graze his arm. At the last second, it retreated and pinched her own skin instead.
“Adrien?” she said in a breath.
Chat grinned. He’d never liked the sound of his name more.
“Funny meeting you here, Marinette,” he laughed. It was a new feeling to address Ladybug with that.
Ladybug remained frozen. “This is not happening,” she mumbled to herself. “I’m asleep. I’m dreaming. This is an akumatized villain-”
“I am very much real, and not akumatized. Have some better faith in me, my lady-”
“Have you been stalking me?!” she shrieked suddenly, looking at Chat skeptically. “Did you follow me to my room, see me transform… see my Adrien posters…” she trailed off, as if another world-ending thought came to her.
“You have posters of me?”
She gave a mean look. “Of Adrien. Not you!”
Chat chuckled uncomfortably, rubbing his nape. “That’s me… off-duty. Identity crisis, am I right?” he laughed.
Ladybug looked unconvinced. “You are not Adrien!”
“I am!”
Ladybug’s hand frantically pointed to a sight in the distance. “That’s Adrien!” she cried out at a perfume billboard. It was so small from where he was looking that Chat had no choice but to accept that she had memorized where that billboard was from anywhere in the city.
Chat wasn’t sure what to reply. He waited till Ladybug’s maniacal reaction had calmed down till he spoke again.
“I’m serious. I’m Adrien Agreste.”
A beat of silence passed between the two. Ladybug just stared at Chat.
Then she just burst out laughing. In a calmer tone, she said, “come on kitty, lying to get me to like you back is low for you.”
“No, I’m serious. I’m Adrien!” he crossed his arms defensively. He frowned at the amused smile on Ladybug’s face.
“If you really are Adrien, then all those stories should’ve rung a bell for you-”
“You talked to my father to let me go to New York with you, came to my house in disguise when that party happened, which, by the way, I had no part of organizing, and asked me to get you medicine from London. I didn’t know about the trash, and I still have the lucky charm. I am Adrien,” he said. “And you are Marinette.”
Ladybug blinked. “And we’re… Ladybug and Chat Noir?”
“Looks like it,” he said with a smile.
“There were a million people you could’ve been and you’re… Adrien?” she said slowly.
“You’re not disappointed… are you?” Chat’s lip trembled for a split-second. He worried he read the signs all wrong until he saw Ladybug look up, beaming with a warmth he’d never seen.
“Disappointed?” she laughed. “No. Not at all.”
Relief flooded him. “Good,” he said, smiling at her happiness. “Just so it wasn’t clear, you’re the classmate who Adrien can’t stop being enamored by.”
She shut her eyes tight, cringing. “Chat Noir’s the person Marinette’s made a fool of myself in front of. That’ll take me a while to understand.”
Chat Noir grinned before reaching for her hand. “I thought I was living as two different people, but I’ve gone ahead and fallen in love with the same person as both of them. Even in both lives, I found myself with you.”
Ladybug gave a small smile. “Solve any identity crisis for you?”
Chat Noir laughed. “Definitely explains a lot,” he said. “But even if it didn’t, it doesn’t really matter now, does it?”
“Why’s that?” Ladybug answered. Their fingertips were touching now, a small touch so shy that it was easy to pretend it wasn’t even happening. It wasn’t insignificant at all though. Right now, Chat Noir was touching not just Ladybug, but Marinette - his partner, his classmate, and the only person who understood what it meant to be so many people at once.
“Well, we have a whole lot of nights ahead of us to figure them out together,” he said with a smile. The rest of the night continued like this, with jokes and loud laughter about the strange coincidences of them, awkward moments of trying to hide identities from each other and everyone else, revealing embarrassing things they did for one another.
To any Parisian that night who would look up at the sky, they might be a lucky onlooker to the two celebrities of the city sitting atop a rooftop. But the truth would only be between the two figures up on the roof, who knew that on a quiet night like this existed something much more than Ladybug and Chat Noir.

Mlb fans
someone recommend me good Adrienette fanfics where Adrien is more of his real self and flirts with Marinette like Chat Noir would.
Or some fics where Adrien finds out but Maru doesn't.
I'm fine with a mix of adrienette and marichat as well.

Mending Warped Designs Chapter 24: Bet It All On Black
The Empress slithered through the sky above Paris, glaring down as thousands of her progeny swarmed the streets below. Through a thin, shimmering barrier that kept them hidden from sight, Ladybug watched the monster carefully. There had to be some kind of weakness; no creature alive was completely immune to harm. There was a flaw in its design somewhere; if Ladybug could just find it, then maybe they could-
"You get all that Ladybug?"
Ladybug snapped out of her brooding as Rena Rouge lightly tapped her on the shoulder.
"Sorry I was snake-watching," Ladybug said, shaking her head. "How are we going at this thing?"
"They expect us to go toe to toe with the big one," Rena Rouge said. "So that's what it's gonna look like we're doing. Monarch, Bluebird and I are going to run interference while you and Queen Bee free Carapace and secure The Toad's ring if you can. Once you've taken some pressure off Nino...and if he's still in good shape, we can talk about regrouping and fighting The Empress. But right now we need to check some things off our to-do list before it overwhelms us and takes Paris down with it."
Ladybug glanced up at The Empress as she glided overhead. "She's gonna eat you if she catches you."
"But first she's gotta catch us," Rena Rouge said with a mischievous glint in her eye. "If I play my tricks right, we can reverse this little trap, slip under her radar and start counterattacking at their weak points. Use their own tricks against them; start a bunch of fires that they have to put out and attack the weak links in their command chain."
"Their chain is miles longer than ours is," Bluebird pointed out, glancing at Monarch.
"Let me see if I can add some links," Monarch said, a butterfly fluttering off her fingertip. "I'll see if there's anyone available in town; every quality Champion is either underground or otherwise incapacitated. Bloody ARK bunkers lock until the all-clear is given.”
“Juleka said she'll try to get back in time,” Bluebird said, glancing at his phone. “But I think it'll be difficult to return from Australia in time to help."
"Bad time for a vacation but if things go to plan, this shouldn't take that long," Rena Rouge said, glancing at Ladybug. "What'd I miss?"
It took a second before Ladybug realized that Rena Rouge was asking for her input. "Besides the giant snake slithering through the sky and the small army of monsters at its beck and call?"
"Did she miss anything important ?" Queen Bee chuckled. "Monsters attacking Paris is nothing new; we're more than capable of handling a few runaway lizards for a little while."
"Yeah, I can tell you what you forgot," Ladybird said, jerking her thumb in Cat Noir's direction. "Are we supposed to just play tiddlywinks while you all save the city?"
"Considering you're the objective we're trying to keep our enemies from reaching, yeah, that would be ideal," Ladybug said. "But judging by the pout and puppy dog eyes, you're not going to stay put unless we gag you and stuff you in a broom closet, are you?"
"How many times do I need to remind you guys that we are heroes too!" Cat Noir said, tossing his arm over Ladybird's shoulder. "Heroes with a fantastic track record of success, I might add."
Ladybug and Rena Rouge exchanged glances and Ladybird took her chance to press the advantage. "If you guys can't pull off whatever it is you're gonna pull off, we're as good as captured anyway."
"But if we fight with you, we all have a better chance of seeing the end of this," Cat Noir pointed out.
“ And put you in mortal danger,” Monarch pointed out.
“Being a hero means being in danger,” Ladybird said, her eyes finding her partner’s for a second. “I’m not the kind of coward who will let people get hurt just to keep me safe.”
“Nobody is saying you're a coward, outside of some very emotionally disturbed felines with an axe to grind with our Ladybug,” Queen Bee sighed. “Buggy, please talk some sense into this kid before her ego gets her killed."
Ladybug tried her best to find a flaw in their logic, but after a screech from the monster overhead, she realized their time for arguing had come and gone. "Not together though; we have to split you up."

Doodle’s Anthology: Winter Things {3/3}
Last but certainly not least as it’s common knowledge that sometimes the best things come in threes. Hello my Miraculous Lovelies, this is the last part of my first set of anthology entries. If you have read the previous parts I hope you enjoyed it. If this is your first time encountering one of these parts then welcome.
This is the last installment and other parts links will be provided below. Due to all the entries length I had broken up into three sections and will place links below to make everything easier here:
Section 1. Section 2. Section 3.
I hope you enjoy what I have been working on. So let’s continue with the third story: Winter Check In.
Winter Check In
Theme: Winter Things
Winter, just like any season, has many of its gifts that do not last forever. Time marches on no matter the placement of the year. Within the air, a wintery chill still permeated throughout the formerly snow draped Paris. For the past couple days, layers of snow began to dissolve little by little. Only a few spots appeared to be untouched. A natural closure to one of life’s many chapters.
Tonight, the city was gifted with a starless sky leading its glow to become a guiding light for those above it. Night had fallen quickly, like a thick stage curtain. A little cover was given to a certain black cat. However, this was no mere cat, instead it was Astrocat: the flying suit version of Chat Noir. He glided through the air while carrying a filled brown paper shopping bag by the handles. Each second that passed his mind continued to become more and more within a stir.
He wondered about the relevance of tonight. It wasn’t like he had seen her yesterday when plans could’ve been verified. It was all based on the assumption. Something he had learned multiple times was not always the best indicator of the truth. His curiosity had peaked about the state of everything. But he would rather have pure intentions rather than retreat due to the fear of looking foolish.
A few moments went by as the airborne feline passed over a few blocks taking advantage of switching from his usual tread on the rooftops. Astrocat had learned that lesson this time last year after slipping on an unsuspecting patch of ice. Almost falling off the rooftop in the street during the process. Once he had gotten close to his destination the cat made his descent, swooping down before landing. His boots hit against the gray wooden floors of the lavish rooftop patio before scanning the area. Not much had changed since the previous month that he was here. Two gray L-shaped couches still sat parallel to each other.
Although this time they were covered with about ten winter themed pillows each and thick fluffy gray blankets. Replacing the autumn themed pillows and macaroon blankets from the previous visit. Between the couches was an built in gray wooden table with a rustic black tray that had an array of lit plastic LED tea lights. The patio’s safety railing around the perimeter was wrapped with white string lights giving the patio a snowy glow look. In the middle of the table was a long flat rectangular box wrapped in blue and white snowflake wrapping paper, tied with silvery ribbons.
Nestled between the ribbons and the wrapped box was a white notecard with red ink scribble across it. The cat picked it up reading the words:
Hey, I got your note and gift. Here’s a late holiday gift for the both of you. Thanks for everything.
Sincerely,
-Ms. M
He couldn’t help but smile before placing the card back between the box and the ribbon. After reverting back to his default suit, Chat Noir started to unpack. He pulled out of the brown shopping bag a few plastic food storage containers that consisted of pretzels, crackers, pre-sliced cheddar cheese and grapes. Before taking out a box of assorted winter themed sugar cookies. Plastic wrap was peeled off the large black thermos of hot chocolate in the cat’s hand as he had sat it on the table with the others. Followed by a can of whipped cream and a bag of mini marshmallows. The pang of worry still ran through as he pulled out a bag of disposable to-go coffee cups.
It had been nearly two weeks since he had seen her.
But before the burden of this thought could leave much impact, his cat ears perked up. A familiar zipping sound filled the perimeter. Followed by a soft thump behind him. Chat Noir turned around to greet the familiar presence behind him.
Ladybug.
The cat smiled as his worries had been dispelled. “Hey Ladybug.”
“Hi Chat,” the bug greeted while wrapping the yoyo around her waist. “It’s been a bit. How are you?”
“I’m fine. But I’ll admit that I was wondering if you were going to show up.”
“And miss our monthly check in? At this point it’s better to assume that something horrible happened to me before I willingly flake on you. But maybe I shouldn’t tempt fate like that.”
“Agree. I know that it’s just been almost two weeks since Shadow Moth has done anything. But it did not stop me from missing one of my closest friends.”
Ladybug gave a gentle smile. “I missed you too.”
“Yeah, there’s nothing like going without the fun of several near death experiences and violent explosions for over a week to make the heart grow fonder.”
“Leave it to you to say that’s fun. You’re always been the risk taker between the two of us. And that’s saying something.”
“What can I say, it’s part of my charm.”
“I thought you had said it was telling jokes?”
“Well, that too.”
“Is that all for us?” the bug asked while her eyes lingered over the table.
“Yep after the stuff you bought last month,” he told her. “It’s only fair that I stepped up.”
“It wasn’t that much,” she waved her hand nonchalantly. “It’s just the stuff I had put together that night. It would’ve been better if I didn’t have other commitments.“
”So you don’t think the Christmas tree cupcakes, the eggnog, peanut butter fudge, chocolate chip cookies and that cracker candy wasn’t a lot? Not that I’m complaining.”
“Well, that was the holidays. It’s never been a competition.”
“You still raised the bar but before I forget,” the cat reached over to pick up the wrapped box. “Look what I found when I got here.”
Ladybug looked over the box in his hand reading the card. “Aww from Ms. Marseille. She must’ve liked the flowers that we left last time for a thank you for letting us use this place. Do you know what it is?”
“Nope,” Chat Noir shook his head. “I was waiting for you.”
Both of the heroes started to undo the ribbons and tear at the wrapping paper to reveal a white box with a brown cursive font : Houde’s Assorted Chocolate Sampler.
“A box of chocolate,” Ladybug announced. “From the size I’m going to guess that there are about fifty to one hundred chocolates in here.”
“That’s sweet,” Chat Noir smiled.
“Pun intended?” Ladybug asked.
The cat’s eyes widened, completely baffled. “Actually no, but that was so oblivious. Why didn’t I think that? Wow, I haven’t been out of the suit that long and I’m already rusty.”
“As long as your fighting skills aren’t rusty, the bug plucked the card from the wrapping paper pile. “You’ll be okay.”
This had no intention of this becoming a habit, meeting up like this. It had started a few months ago when Chat Noir had noticed his partner suffering from another round of serve burnout. Instead of her liveliness she could be easily described as weary, stressed and paranoid. He had tried to approach the topic a few times as time sailed by but it seemed that she became more and more sealed off. However, there was one attack that made all his concerns impossible to ignore. It seemed that day Ladybug was suffering from a creative block as she was struggling to find a use for her lucky charm.
Their time crunch had almost become disastrous as their opponent had geared up for his final attack while his partner’s timer was running out. Instinctively, Chat Noir snatched the cinderblock from her hand and chucked it at the villain knocking him out. Before pushing the bug into a nearby alleyway to prevent her from revealing her identity. Crisis was averted but clearly something had to be done for the benefit of everyone. So the same night instead of doing patrol he led her to the patio so they could talk. This wasn’t an intervention but to have a conversation partner to partner, friend to friend.
Ladybug admitted that multiple people in her personal life had already asked the same thing. She had still been reeling from losing Master Fu and stumbling through not only her guardian duties atop of everything else on her plate. That she had been feeling like a lost soul. After their discussion, it felt nice to bring those feelings out in the open. The next patrol night Ladybug had given him a bag of chocolate chip cookies as a thank you. This became a pattern of them meeting up and talking. At first, it seemed this was a way for his partner to air out some grievances.
Eventually it had gotten to the point of becoming therapeutic for the both of them. Chat Noir had opened up about a few things himself. Not having the fear of what he would say would tarnish the Agreste brand. Or even worse, it somehow got back to his father. It had turned into a monthly custom coming here with permission from the apartment building’s owner Ms. Marseille. Chat Noir had met and struck a deal with her a few months ago after falling asleep on the patio due to exhaustion.
The heroes communicated with her through a string of notes, giving her as little information as possible for everyone’s safety. If she fell under Shadow Moth’s influence there would not be not much to tell. The point of this was not about romance although a version of himself from not so long ago would have jumped at the opportunity. Instead things had changed, starting with his partner’s unceremonious shift to guardian.
“So…do you think he’s hibernating?” questioned Chat Noir as he sat on one of the couches. He had finished up the sugar cookie he was eating in one hand while holding a cup of hot chocolate in the other.
Ladybug looked up from the cup of hot chocolate in her hand. She had wrapped herself in one of the fluffy blankets. “Who…wait are you talking about Shadow Moth?”
“Well we haven’t heard from him since a few days before the snowstorm,” he said. “Maybe that’s why we haven’t heard from him lately.”
“It’s not like he’s a bear, Chat. If he was it would be some shapeshifter bear,” she told him. “We have seen him in person multiple times and he looks human.”
“You seem to be forgetting that we live in a world where magic beings can grant people superpowers through jewelry. That with one word I can automatically destroy whatever I touch. You can fix millions of euros of property damage and heal the injured by a magical swarm of ladybugs.”
Her eyes shifted to the side. “Well, when you put it like that.”
The cat’s lips spread into a smirk. “So a shapeshifting bear doesn’t sound so crazy now, does it?”
Ladybug shook her head. “I don’t know if I can accept that without legitimate proof. Even if you might be right. Remember the last time that I had jumped to conclusions. Does Gabriel Agreste ring a bell?”
Chat Noir’s smirk tightened into a lip bite. “Yeah…it’s good we realized it was a dead end before accusing him. He definitely would’ve taken offense.”
“Who wouldn’t? It’s not like it’s a compliment. I thought it made sense at the time. But the truth is it really could be anybody and that is what makes it scary.”
“Have you ever considered that it could be someone that we actually know?”
“It has crossed my mind a few times,” the bug took a slip of her hot chocolate. “I also would have passed him on the street. My earrings could be taken anytime if he knew. It would become the beginning of the end. There was even a moment when I thought it was.”
“Wait really? When did this happen?”
“A few weeks ago. It turned out to be a false alarm so that’s why I didn’t bring it up sooner. I wouldn’t have kept it from you if it was serious.”
“Can you still tell me?“
“Sure, I went to that popular burger shop downtown with my friends. When it was my turn to order and pay, the cashier who looked around his forties asked me where I got my earrings. I just froze, since no one really comments on them.”
“What happened next?”
“It turns out that he was asking because his daughter’s birthday was in a couple weeks and thought they would be a nice gift for her. I told him that they were a family heirloom. I directed him to the Sparkle Boutique across the street as they sell a lot of pretty earrings. After I got my food I stayed close to my friends making sure I couldn’t be caught alone, just in case. Nothing came out of it but…”
“You can be too careful?” the cat finished her sentence.
“Exactly, after all we’ve been through,” the bug sighed. “All that we had lost… there is no such thing as being too careful.”
There was a beat of silence between them, for the oblivious.
“I know how you felt, a while back after getting my ring my father noticed and asked about it.”
“What did you say?”
“Something along the lines of was the only thing that he noticed about me. It’s been a while since it happened.”
“What about things with your dad? You mentioned last time we did this you were concerned about the holidays with him after an incident the previous year.”
“Things were fine, we had a holiday party. He was actually pretty involved in the planning. Something that he had never really done before.”
“How was the party?”
“It was fun but it didn’t go off without a hitch. Behind the scenes some of the presents had gotten switched around. So I fixed that before the gift exchange. The caterers came late so we had to eat later than planned. Luckily, there were snacks to tie people over until the food got there. However I had heard nothing but good things from my friends so it seemed that no one but us noticed.“
“That’s a relief right?”
“Yeah. But since then he has been nothing but closed off. I guess his work has spiked up after the holidays as he mostly stays in his office. There’s nothing much to report besides that.”
“Was it at least better than the previous year? From the tiny bit that you had told me it was pretty bad. Not only that but we also had to fight Santa Claws.”
“It was. Honestly, I was expecting to slip out at least once that night. I was surprised that I didn’t. Maybe Shadow Moth was able to spend time with some family or friends. Those poor souls.”
“Chat-“
“What? Considering all that he had done. Do you think that he’s a good friend? A nice uncle, a sweet grandson or a generous father? I don’t think someone like that can keep all that evilness in until putting on a mask.”
“It’s possible, don’t think that I’m defending him. I’m not, but it’s also possible that he was hiding in plain sight. A lot of people put on facades to hide their wrongdoings. For all we know he might be one of the sweetest seeming people around.”
“What would happen if it was someone you knew.”
“Huh?”
“When we eventually unmask Shadow Moth, what would you do if it’s someone that you know?”
“It depends on who it is. If it was someone that I liked or respected. I would be deeply disappointed especially if we were close. Or the only way that I know them is because they’re close because of someone like a friend. That would hurt.”
“What if it was someone you didn’t like?”
“It certainly will be a lot easier. Depending on who it is, everything might suddenly make sense. Either way the outcome would be the same. I can’t let that slide and they need to be punished for their crimes.”
“Even if it’s someone that you know?”
“All the damage and harm that’s been done doesn’t suddenly vanish because he was one of my school teachers or a friend of my parents. I already gave someone a second chance against my better judgment and we both know how that turned out.”
The cat’s eyes shifted to the side, aware of what his partner was alluding to. After the events of Miracle Queen and the fallout from it. It had made him question the legitimacy of second chances when it comes to this area.
“I’m not saying that people shouldn’t give others second chances. But I learned from what happened after the Miracle Queen incident to be more selective with them. In my opinion, Shadow Moth shouldn’t be allowed not to face any consequences for what he did. Why? Are you trying to tell me something?”
Chat Noir shook his head. “No, lately it’s just I’ve been wondering what could happen when we get to that point.”
“It probably won’t be happening for a good while.”
“How do you know?”
“Based on what we learned during the Time Tagger attack. It’s clear that we are going to be doing this for the next couple years.”
“That actually doesn’t sound so bad. Who wouldn’t want to be a hero for the next couple years.”
Ladybug seemed to slightly flinch. “So what about you? What would you do?”
“About what?”
“We haven’t really talked about this much as we don’t know how the scenario is going to play out. There’s a possibility that you might have to make the decision in retrieving the butterfly miraculous, alone.”
“Alone? What about you?”
“It’s not like I’m going to try not to show up. But depending on the situation. I might not be able to do it. So, what would you do if Shadow Moth is someone that you know? You think that you can put your feelings aside?”
“Of course,” he spoke brazenly before faltering. “I mean…I like to think that I would be. If not, that would mean what I’ve been doing for over a year would be for nothing.”
“It wouldn’t be for nothing. The city had been saved multiple times by us. Many times I would’ve been in danger if you hadn’t been there with me. You had stepped up the day I had trouble figuring out my lucky charm. So don’t base your worth on something that hasn’t happened yet.”
“You’re not the first person that has said something like that to me. But you’re right. I feel the same way as you. Shadow Moth has done so much for him not to face any consequences. How many times have we almost died because of him?”
“About two hundred and fifty times.”
Chat Noir’s eyes widened. “You actually counted?”
“Well…it’s a rough estimate,” Ladybug admitted. “So take it with a grain of salt. But I do have a knack when it comes to keeping records. Remember, I’m the one who put together the villain database for the reserve heroes.”
“Based on that fact alone, I would rather it be a stranger. That’s easier than knowingly fighting who I thought was good, at least deep down. But again, maybe it was fate for me to be picked to do this if that is the case. If it’s true then it’s really my responsibility to bring them in. At least that won’t have to be for the next couple years, luckily.”
“You didn’t seem bothered about still having to do this for the next couple years.”
“Yeah, why wouldn’t I be? Are you?”
Ladybug bit her lip before putting the cup in her hands on the table, like she was stalling. “I should just say it. Especially since I recently had a discussion about not swallowing my feelings with important stuff like this.”
“With who? Was it Guitar Strings, Sneakers, Cap, Glasses…”
“Wow, when you list my friends’ fake names like that. It sounds like my whole social circle is made of things you find in a scavenger hunt.”
“You were the one that picked them for privacy. Which is fair as I don’t know anyone named Hand Sanitizer.”
The bug chuckled softly. “That’s why I chose it. But…I don’t like the uncertainty of it all. Naturally things are going to change in a few years. So what else that I might have to give up because I’m Ladybug? Even not hearing from Shadow Moth kinda has me on edge.”
“Really? I figured you of all people would have enjoyed the break.”
“I do, it’s nice to have a couple days off. To be able to rest and not rush through everything so I can drop it at a moment’s notice. But it gives me this uneasy feeling that this break is because he’s planning something big. I don’t plan to leave Paris hanging. It’s just the uncertainty that gets me. How does it not get to you?”
“It’s probably because of the life that I had. Before getting this ring I never had many choices. There were many times I wanted to get away from it. Where everything had been planned for me without my input. The next thing that I knew there was a random box in my room.”
“So it gave you a chance.”
“Exactly, for the longest time that I thought that would be enough. It wasn’t until recently that I realized there’s more than that. The problems don’t disappear once I put on the mask. In fact, more happens because of it. But me becoming Chat Noir was one of the few choices that I solely made on my own. So I would rather sit with uncertainty knowing it’s my decision rather than going back to structure without choices.”
“I never thought of it like that.”
“You don’t have to see it the same way. Those are my personal reasons. You just have to find your own way to make peace with the situation.”
“Hopefully I will, someday.”
Seconds ticked by, as the two looked at each other with a new understanding with each other. The type couldn’t be achieved without taking heed of one another.
“Whoa, things got super heavy all of a sudden,” the cat quipped, breaking the silence. “So how about we lighten the mood a bit? I didn’t come here today just for the heart to heart confessions.”
“Really?” Ladybug raised a brow, almost if she sensed the direction her partner was trying to lead them. “What else did you come for then?”
Chat Noir reached forward grabbing the brown shopping bag on the table. He pulled out a deck of playing cards bound by a rubber band. “We have a score to settle.”
A smirk spread on the bug’s face. “You mean the score where I had beaten you 30-19 in cards?”
“That’s the one,” a competitive spark gleamed in his eyes. “You in?”
“Only if we can open up the box of chocolates from Ms. Marseille to share,” Ladybug bargained.
“Deal,” Chat Noir undid the rubber band. “By the way, nineteen isn’t so bad against a strategist like you. Have you ever considered that all this time I have been luring you into a false sense of security?”
“Well, let’s see. I’m always glad when we get to hang out like this. So you pick the game especially since you brought the snacks.”
“How about… the game of pure strategy,” the cat shuffled the cards. “But I must warn you that I have been practicing since the last time we played.”
“Bring it on,” the bug dared. “You’re not the only one around here who isn’t afraid of a challenge.”
“Good, I was waiting for this all week,” Chat Noir started to deal the cards. “There’s nothing better than checking in with a friend.”
It’s a suitable way to keep the light fading in the overwhelming darkness.
The End.
Thanks for reading! 😊
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I hope you enjoy all the stories that I have written. I thought this was a nice story to have Ladybug and Chat Noir just simply talking like good friends. I have noticed in my recent works I didn’t have them really socialize. They interacted but it’s more like here what we do to reach our mission statement. So I had to fix that. They’re still talking about hero stuff but it’s in a more relaxed environment.
This story is also available on Wattpad.
Since this is the final part, will do the closing statements here. If you are reading this the day it was originally posted then you are aware that today is Saturday. After posting my previous story Promise? on Saturday. I realized that I like posting on that day gives me more time to put everything together. So my official post day will now be Saturday.
At least for now. Another change is I have decided to do once a month posting. I’m going to face big changes in my personal life soon. And while I don’t want to give up posting, it seems more fair for everybody to just post once a month. This way each story can get the proper time it deserves without me being overwhelmed by prior commitments. Readers won’t get large gaps between content.
I will still be on the platform reading and appreciating other people’s posts. But posting myself will be a once a month period now. For those who have been following me all this time. I really appreciate your patience and support.
The song for this week is “Winter Sound” by Of Monster and Men. I believe it gives an all encompassing feel of all three stories.
See you next time. 👋
MLB Bloopers
[movie/TV-shows scenes rewrite]
Chapter 5: MLB x Friends (Ao3)
[Post reveal, Mari and Alya’s shared apartment, Adrien, Nino and Kagami visiting. Marinette made lasagna for her parents’ first visit]
Adrien: Has anybody seen my ring?
Nino: Yeah, it’s extremely cool, bro!
Adrien: Oh God, oh God, oh God oh God oh God oh God.... [Starts to look under the couch cushions]
Alya [glancing at the nervous Marinette]: No, look, don’t touch that!
Adrien: Oh, like I wasn’t dreading tomorrow enough, having to give it to Felix... “Hi Felix! Remember me? I’m your cousin who promised to exchange miraculous with you for a week because you helped me to take down my evil father!” Oh God and now I’m gonna have to give him the ring, without the ring, which makes it so much worse, because without the ring to hold Plagg’s powers back, these two will just destroy London! Or worse…
Marinette: Easy Adrien, we’ll find it. [To all] Won’t we?!
Alya, Kagami and Nino [jumping from the chairs]: Oh! Yeah!
Kagami: Alright, when’d you have it on last?
Nino: Doy! Probably right before he lost it!
Alya: You don’t get a lot of ‘doy’ these days...
Adrien: I know I had it this morning, and I know I had it when I was in your kitchen with...
Alya: Dinah?
Adrien: [looks at the lasagne and realizes something] Ohhhhh, don’t be mad...
Marinette: You didn’t!..
Adrien: Oh, I am sorry, Bugaboo...
Marinette: I gave you one job! [Starts to examine the lasagne through the bottom of the glass pan]
Adrien: Oh, but look how straight those noodles are, milady!
Nino: Now, Mari, you know that’s not how you look for a miraculous in a lasagne...
Marinette: [puts down the lasagne] I just... can’t do it.
Nino [looking towards the open door of Marinette’s bedroom]: Boys? We’re going in!
[A flock of kwami fly out of the bedroom and dive into the lasagna with squeals while there’s a knock on the door which Marinette answers]
Luka: [standing outside the door] ...Hi…
Marinette: Wow. That is not a happy hi.
Luka: Juleka’s pregnant.
Tikki: [emerges from lasagna with the Black Cat miraculous while everyone in the room is stunned] Ooh! I found it!
Marinette: W-w-wh-... wha-... w-w-w-...
Luka: Yeah. Just a couple of weeks ago she gave me a bunch of resumes and asked me which of the men I liked best, but I didn’t think they were for that... [He enters.]
Alya: Aren’t she and Rose too young for that?
Nino: Well now, how-how do you fit into this whole thing?
Luka: Well, Juleka says she and Rose want me to be involved, but if I’m not comfortable with it, I don’t have to be involved... basically it’s entirely up to me.
Kagami: She is so great! I miss her.
Marinette: What does she mean by ‘involved’?
Alya: I mean presumably, the biggest part of your job is done when choosing a donor.
Luka: Anyway, I’m her big bro and they want me to go down to this- sonogram thing with them tomorrow.
Adrien: So what are you gonna do?
Luka: I have no idea. No matter what I do, though, I’m still gonna be an uncle.
[Kwamis start to eat the rest of the lasagne champing loudly and everyone turns and stares at them]
Plagg [Popping out of lasagna]: What? This is still ruined, right? I can’t let all the cheese in it go to waste!
a sneak peak at the 6th and final chapter of too little, too late ♥
We’ve finally made it kids :’) Thank you to everyone who has stuck with the story after all this time, I’m so excited to finally be bringing you the ending!!
The final part of too little, too late will be going live tomorrow!
Here is a little excerpt in the meantime <3
x.x.x
His touch ignites an explosion of sunlight.
He’s deposited into the warm hold of a memory - but no, Adrien thinks as his eyes span his new surroundings, that’s not right. This is no memory of his if a memory is what it truly is.
He is sitting in front of a golden landscape, the tail of the burning sun tucked behind the black horizon, its bleeding brilliance saturating the entire world into a concerto of sweltering colors. He’s on a hillside, above a tidy valley cupped around a lulling lake.
And walking along its edge are Adrien and Marinette.
He watches with astonishment as this version of himself - for it clearly isn’t the real him - cajoles Marinette with gentle prodding, coaxing her into an easy, weightless dance. They float around the lake edge with all the effortlessness of two lungs breathing in harmony, pulled into each other as if chasing the other’s gravity - desperate for it.
Unable to survive without it.
They twirl and twirl and twirl across the ground until they’re spinning out onto that glittering lake surface, melting into the colors of landscape as they begin to undulate and melt together, so that the two of them are two swipes of the thousands making up the painted landscape.
Then, that spark of pink light again.
There and gone it goes in a flash, and this time when Adrien leaps for it, he knows what it is.
Or rather, who.
“Tikki!”  Adrien calls, but his voice sounds like it’s bubbling up from underwater. “Please! We need your help!”
“I’m sorry, Adrien,” Tikki says, but her voice is all wrong. Distorted in a drooping way that reminds him of melting plastic. “I can’t seem to - “ and her light flickers, glitching between purple-black and pink-white, like she’s infected with an illness quickly spreading.
The golden landscape melts into that endless void of blackness all around him. His ears begin to ring.
