PS4 / PS5 Era Fighting Games Ranked By How Many Female Fighters Are Playable
If you're like me, and I know I am, you always pick the cunty bitchy girlies in fighting games over the gross sweaty guys so I decided to make a tier ranking of all the (decent) modern fighting games that actually matters!
No Boys Allowed - No games in this tier because our world is imperfect
Almost... - Skullgirls gets pretty close to nailing things but they went and added TWO whole MEN and ruined things!
Let's Just Meet In the Middle - Melty Blood, Dead or Alive 5 and Cross Tag Battle feature a pretty healthy amount of female characters with Granblue, Central Fiction, Under Night, Persona 4 Arena and Chronophantasma following cloaw behind.
This Is Practically a Sausagefest - To be fair, the situation in SoulCalibur VI, Street Fighter 6, KOFXV, Samurai Shodown, KOFXIV and Guilty Gear Xrd is salvageable, but the situation gets progressively worse from SFV onwards. MK11 only has 12 girls, Strive has 8, Tekken 7 has 16... In a cast of 50 and so on...
...Boys Are Gross! - By far the worst offender though is Dragon Ball FighterZ where only FIVE female characters are playable, and one is just a different version of Android 21!
In all seriousness though, I'm just joking here, all of these games are great so if you haven't already go pick any of them and play!
Although more female fighters is obviously always a good choice. Tell me who is your favourite!
Recently I've been getting into KOF, which also means Ive found new favorite characters to talk about and sometimes ramble on about too.
EXHIBIT A: Irish Krizalid from KOF '99
(art drawn by @/tanzong830 on twitter/youtube, click here to go to the direct source!)
one of the big three of NESTS, I hear!
this man has a hard boss fight (if you dont cheese it) and cool asf design. Headcannons go crazy with this one. Also might be my main on KOF 2002UM soon. I wish he'd be part of one of the boss challenges or DLC on KOFXV as well..
overall: I like this character alot and it seems that lots of others do too
EXHIBIT B: Shun'ei from KOFXIV
one of the renders of Shun'ei from XV, taken from the SNK wiki
This character just screams "Modern new-age Protagonist" and I love it. His motion inputs are simple enough in XV, his climax super looks fucking awesome, and he also feels cool to play as.
I wonder how his story's going to end, I don't know... I hope it ends well, considering that he may have mastered his powers according to Team Hero's ending in KOFXV. His headphones, his outfit, the cool jacket he wears on his back, auughh so cool...
EXHIBIT C: K', from KOF '99
The Beast of Prey himself, with wicked-ass magic(?) shades, the fire from his robot arm, and the cool outfit. yeh. Also his name is pronounced K dash since there's a dash in his name-
winpose in 2001 taken from the SNK Wiki
God. So cool. If you wanted to see "THE cool new-age protagonist before cool new-age protagonist was a thing", K' was your guy. Granted I was born nowhere near the time '99 came out, but ever since I discovered KOF, K' has been one of my usual picks despite knowing fuck-all about how to play him properly, because I think he's cool as hell
Sure he's a bit edgy but he's got moves to back it up. his shades, his heavy treanchcoat and leather(?) pants, the robot arm, his fire, goddddddsdfakjsdfjklasdfh
he's so damn cool.
and that sums it up about my KOF rambling.
tl;dr: Krizalid, Shun'ei, and K' are so cool... and so is KOF

Once upon a time, fighting game characters were quite beefy. Then the fire Ash Crimson attacked and everyone got stick bugged. Jokes aside, I think it happened around the time KOF was developed by not-SNK who made the newer characters disproportionate to the legacy sprites.
Also reminding you all that the reason Kim is missing from KoFXV is because of everyone’s complaint about him in KoFXIV, they are now going to keyframe every motion of his fabulous pants.
Okay sorry, that was a lie as well. No idea why he’s missing.
So in an effort to connect better with my audience, I figured this would be a fun post to make. Mentioning what fighting games I play and who I play in them.

Yesterday I saw Kim’s win quotes in KOFXIV, one of them is against Sylvie. (Kim:"With Tae Kwon Do you can stand on a brilliant stage, not fight underground! Come on, give it a try!") And I have a crazy idea after seeing it: What if Sylvie become a member of Team Korea in the future.
Without Chang and Chin around Kim might starting to recruit“new students”for his Rehabilitation Project and I think Kim will most likely recruit underground fighters since it have a lot of them and Sylvie is an underground fighter so she will be one of his “new students”.
And unsurprisingly nearly everyone ran away from Kim’s dojo because they can’t handle the training while Sylvie is the only one stays and her oddball personality will definitely give Kim a headache.
That is all I have for now, might post more in the future when I think of something new.
man i was really loving kof xv until i accidentally mashed lp. "rush combo"...
how did i forget this garbage was in kofxiv as well? i guess it's been a while...
the only thing i hate more than autocombos (that aren't optional) are the tryhards who defend them. "don't mash lp git gud" lol... it's so funny too bc in this case they're literally saying "you are unskilled bc you don't use babymode" like WHAT?! these elitist losers will really just defend anything simply based on if it's divisive, huh? they hear "i don't like this" and run in screaming and crying "ITS BC U ARE BAD" like no we just don't like it you fuckin tool.
So Ed Boon of NetherRealm Studios (Mortal Kombat, Injustice) has finally decided to address the poor quality of their games' animations and... Well...
First of all, it's not just the attack animations, it's also the idle ones and their fighting stances. Not a single character in MK9, MKX or IJ2 looks like they're actually in a fighting stance and when they attack their bodies are anything but realistic-looking. On top of that, games like Tekken, Virtua Fighter, Killer Instinct and, after 5, even DOA feature characters that go for a more realistic tone. None of them animate that bad.
NetherRealm Studios and Warner Bros make the most money out of all studios that produce traditional fighting games, more than Street Fighter, more than Guilty Gear, more than Tekken, more than KOF, more than any of the them, and yet their animations are consistently the worst in the industry. Their character models on top of that, their "realistic characters", looked hideous and inhuman until IJ2 and MK11. Period. Much smaller studios are able to pull off much better results with considerably smaller budgets.
But I'm just a random person on the internet, so maybe someone with actual knowledge on the topic of animation can better explain the issue at hand.

Did I expect Ed to go all "yeah our animations suck"? No, but I did expect, so many years after the release of MK9, which came out in 2011, for them to actually get better and better and produce even higher quality games, yet all the way in 2019, their animations still looked like crap... There's literally no excuses.
Maybe a little less budget spending on the Rhonda Rouseys and the Jean Claude Van Dammes of the world and a little more on making a substantially better game than your competitors and not an artificial one?
Tekken 7's characters' robes, chains, shirts, skirts etc. flow perfectly whereas the superheroes' capes in IJ2 look like they might as well be made of iron.
SNK was able to animate Kim Kaphwan's PANTS to perfection time and time again to the point where the community have made a meme out of his pants being a separate character! Yes, his pants in KOFXIV, the first game in the main series to feature 3D models, look like shit, but what did they do in XV? They actually improved them! Shocking, I know!
Team Ninja produced some gorgeous looking water effects all the way back in 2012 to illustrate characters sweating in Dead or Alive 5. Character sweat in MKX looks like the characters have giant blisters all over their bodies after every single fight. MKX came out three whole years after DOA5.
Virtua Fighter 5 characters have idle poses showcasing character personalities with examples like Sarah brushing her ponytail out of her face (she hops around in her idle pose so her hair gets in the way) while Lau Chan, who is terminally ill, will cough on occasion. That is a TWO THOUSAND AND SIX GAME
And I don't think I need to even talk about the pinnacle of 2D animation that ArcSys have reached or Skullgirls, an INDIE game
I know it feels like I'm trashing on NRS a lot but, like I said, they are currently on top of the industry and a lot of the other studios look up to them and attempt to mimic their results so I would much rather we either actually stop praising mediocrity or they get their shit together and make the games that their current position and status demands.
MK1 is still plagued by issues detected TWELVE whole years ago now so it's clear that improving their weak points is not a priority in NRS's books so I'm not sure what more can be said at this point because I'm sure MK1 will still go on to sell millions of copies and get high review scores so, in NRS's eyes maybe it honestly looks like they don't even have to bother, which is honestly very sad.
