FIRST COURSE - KNIVES

(or at least the ones I recognised from the TV-show so far)

1. Spyderco Harpy

• appears in Hannibal season 3 in Italy .ೃ࿐

The Harpy was designed as a knife for seamen, featuring a karambit style blade that magically cuts right through rope, the serration lending a hand to the task.

Additionally, the Harpy boasts a detailed tip, which can chew through a manner of different materials, probably one of the main reasons why Hannibal found it handy for different...matters. To sum it up: This is not one of his kitchen knives, but rather one he used as a pocket knife in all different kind of situations.

Originally the japanese Spyderco Harpy was designed to accommodate the needs of commercial fishermen. The hawksbill blade is modeled after the talon of the Harpy eagle, allowing for a deliberate pulling cut where the object does not slip off the end of the edge. The hollow-ground blade incorporates SpyderEdge serrations and a thick spine for support. The handle is made of stainless steel with a drying vent, perfect for Hannibal and his exquisite taste…and of course correspondingly expensive. A good 200 euros for this fine tool, everybody. But he seems to be rolling in money, so no problem for our favourite cannibal.

2. Chroma Type 301 style by F. A. Porsche

To be honest I really fell in love with the Spyderco Harpy and didn’t quite think anything could change that. But. When I tell you the design…omg. The Chroma Type 301 knife series was brought to life by F.A. Porsche (yup, the german car guy) and the chef of the decade, Jörg Wörther (austrian chef).

Japanese knives have achieved global recognition for their quality, as the Japanese hold a long tradition in metallurgy. The Japanese metallurgists have elevated the forging and sharpening of the blade into a form of art for hundreds of years, since the era of the notorious Katana swords. On the other hand, Europeans and Americans also make excellent knives, often characterized by superior ergonomics and design, but rarely distinguished for the hardness and sharpness of their blade.

The type 301 knife series by Chroma bridges the gap between Japanese tradition and the European design, this series standing out for its unique design and practical function. Porsche and Wörther closely worked together in order to develop the final shape of the handle, which is optimized for maximum usability. The result is a precision cutting tool. Each knife is carefully weighted to ensure perfect balance in the hand and in combination with the highly ergonomic handle, it feels like an extension of the user’s hand. The Chroma type 301 knives follow faithfully the Japanese philosophy, which dictates a knife to be lightweight and flexible. They are made of high-quality Japanese 301 steel, a relatively lightweight material which has a 56-58 hardness rating in the Rockwell hardness scale. This renders the type 301 knives harder than most of the non-Japanese knives and among the hardest knives within their price range. The increased hardness allows the knife to maintain its sharpness longer and also to slice better.Even though the Chroma type 301 knives are mass produced, they are carefully razorsharp sharpened by the hand of a master. Quality control is performed on one-to-one basis and not through random sampling. And by the way…did I mention the extraordinary design.

3. Kai Shun Knives

Before Shun Cutlery was established in the western market, most people were used to heavy European-style kitchen knives. 4. Global Knives

Global G Series knives are typically put together in what's called a three piece construction. The blade is stamped out of sheets of steel of a proprietary stainless steel alloy, while the two handles are created and welded together separately. The blade and handle are then welded together into one solid piece of stainless steel.

What makes these Global knives a bit unusual is that they start off empty. The blades are welded on without a tang and the handles are actually hollow. Instead, to maintain balance, they are filled with a very precise amount of sand.

Now it's quite unusual and you might just write this off as Japan being Japan and doing things differently because...well, they're Japan, but it seems to work very well for them.

The ability to inject a precise amount of weight (sand, in this case) as needed directly into the knife has led to them getting a reputation or having very precise and excellently balanced knives across their range of products.

That said, ergonomics are always personal.

Global G Series knives tend to feel very lightweight and evenly balanced. Some people tend to prefer a knife that is more weighted to the back for a firmer grip, or to the front for chopping action. This is the classic global knife version, but of course there are various other series one can discover. Unfortunately I am not able to tell the exact version Hannibal uses in the show by just watching...if anyone has an idea let me know!!!

Mental Health Professionals Who Warn Against the Ouija Board

Hasbro is the manufacturer of the Ouija board, which has ruined lives, caused murders and mental illness and markets it as an innocent game for children. Boycott Hasbro and its affiliates including Wizards of the Coast, Tonka and Milton Bradley.

A PARTIAL LIST OF MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS WHO WARN AGAINST THE OUIJA BOARD

Numerous mental health care experts have issued warnings against the use of the board. Indeed, ouija board psychosis has become so prevalent that doctors have named the diagnosis “mediumistic psychosis.”

Dr. Thelma Moss, who is on the staff of the UCLA Neuropsychiatric Institute, stated that “…the Ouija board is no game and can cause serious dissociations of personality.”

Dr. Curry, a former medical director of the New Jersey State Insane Asylum believed that Ouija boards could have an unbalancing effect on those with a pre-disposition to mental instability.

Dr. Alberto Gonzales of the Pan American Institute of Health, Reverend Morris Cerrullo, and Dr. Marta Prohazka of Fairfax, Virginia, who in the course of treating paranoid schizophrenics came to believe that in addition to mental illness the Ouija board has led to “violence, even murder.”

Dr. Carl Wickland stated in 1924 that "the serious problem of alienation and mental derangement attending ignorant psychic experiments was first brought to my attention by cases of several persons whose seemingly harmless experiences with automatic writing and the Ouija board resulted in such wild insanity that commitment to asylums was necessitated."

Psychiatric consultant R. Kenneth McCall has reported that 280 of his cases may be traced to “occult practices, including playing with the Ouija board.”

In the Journal of Child and Adolescent Psychopharmacology of the National Institutes’ of Health doctors Paolo Mazzoni, David Kimhy and Cheryl Corcoran sought to get some answers concerning the still mysterious development of schizophrenia in adolescents by studying a sample group of nine teens. They found that two of “…the older prodromal patients…included…a preoccupation with the paranormal including…Ouija boards.” Though a small sampling, the percentage of schizophrenic adolescents in the study who played with Ouija boards, two out of nine, or 22% is over twenty times higher than the incidence of schizophrenia in the general population.

Freddy Vasquez, director of Suicide Prevention at that institution, said that because of this game a vulnerable and impressionable teenager can fall into a trance of exaltationand distortion of reality through which could be easily led to a death program.

Peruvian Institute of Mental Health doctor Honorio Delgado Hideyo Noguchi warns that the Ouija board might lead impressionable, anxious or suggestible teenagers to suicide, generate hysteria, schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders.

Dr. Marta Prohazka of Fairfax, Virginia warns that the “use of a Ouija has led to violence and even to murder…” During her practice as psychotherapist and psychoanalyst, she realized that many patients she had previously assessed as “…paranoid schizophrenics…” might instead merely be in touch with something invisible to her but visible to them.

On August 7, 2015 the respected Psychology Todayposted an article surprisingly entitled “Can Ouija Boards Trigger Demonic Possession?”

Mexican psychiatrist Nashyiela Loa Zavala investigated an outbreak of mass hysteria as a psychogenic illness (aka, mass hysteria) and traced it back to a student who had used a Ouija board to try to influence the outcome of a school basketball game.” Please click on the link below to boycott Hasbro.

Losing my religion: Who walks away from their faith and why?

Researchers have recently begun to study individuals who are no longer religious. This group of formerly religious individuals—known as the religious dones—is growing in number, but little is known about those who deidentify from religion. Aaron T. McLaughlin, Daryl R. Van Tongeren, Kelly Teahan, Don E. Davis, Kenneth G. Rice, and C. Nathan DeWall sought to fill that gap in knowledge through research; their results were recently published in Psychology of Religion and Spirituality. Building on previous research (Van Tongeren et al., 2021), the authors conducted two studies to examine the religious dones’ motivations behind leaving religion and whether there are different types of religious dones.

First, in a pilot study, the authors queried self-identified religious dones about their reasons for leaving their religion. In response, each participant wrote a short personal essay, which was coded by the research team. Four primary themes emerged. About half of the sample (51.8%) reported leaving for intellectual reasons or because they outgrew their faith. Roughly a fifth of the sample (21.9%) reported religious trauma, such as the hypocrisy of the sexual abuse scandals in the Catholic Church. Others (14.9%) reported leaving religion because of personal adversity, such as an inability to make sense of the tragic death of a child, or social reasons (11.4%), including a religious community’s being unwelcoming.... This book is for you if you're taking a data science course. Although it isn't new (Publication year: 2017), Data Science for Dummies is an excellent place for beginners to start. Lillian Pierson's Data Science book includes chapters on MPP platforms, Spark, machine learning, NoSQL, Hadoop, big data analytics, MapReduce, and artificial intelligence, to name just a few. Because technical students and IT professionals are its intended audience, the term could be deceptive. The book provides a thorough overview of data science rather than a step-by-step lesson, making the complex subject easier to understand.

Data Science from the Scratch: First Principles with Python

Author: Joel Gurus

It is one of those crucial books in data science which help teach arithmetic and statistics. These topics are essential to data science courses. You'll also learn the hacking skills required to start working as a data scientist. The topics addressed in the books are how to implement k-nearest neighbours, Nave Bayes, linear and logistic regression, decision trees, and clustering models. 𝐑𝐀𝐍𝐓 #𝟑.𝟓: The Devolution of Nicki Minaj

𝗗𝗜𝗦𝗖𝗟𝗔𝗜𝗠𝗘𝗥: These rant blog posts are really just reflective of my thoughts at the time that I make them and are posted here because I need an outlet to release all of this shit I have going on my busy ass mind. That’s it and that’s all. Now let’s get into it..

Between Nicki being in the tabloids because of the lawsuit her & her husband, Kenneth Petty, are currently in against her husband’s r*pe victim, for going on a public tirade on Twitter about COVID vaccines, or because she’s playing Captain Save-A-Hoe for a mediocre black-fishing racist white woman, it seems like the 38-year-old rapper can’t seem to catch a break. Not gonna lie, this rant is one that is actually heartbreaking especially for the younger me who once loved Onika’s dirty socks and worshipped the ground the self-proclaimed rap queen walked on. However… she needs to be called out on her bullshit. Enough people kiss her silicone injected ass and enable her reprehensible behavior (for FREE at that.)

So let’s start with the most recent occurrence, shall we?

Mrs. Maraj-Petty decided to return from her short-lived musical hiatus on October 8th as a feature on Jesy Nelson’s debut single “Boyz” which was a sample of Diddy’s ‘Bad Boy for Life’. Diddy also made a guest appearance in the music video. Jesy received a great amount of vitriol because of the blatant cultural appropriation alongside fetishization of black men depicted throughout the music video. Maraj-Petty took it amongst herself to come to the former Little Mix’s group member’s defense and unprovokedly attack Jesy’s former bandmate, Leigh-Anne Pinnock and her husband. It’s quite ironic that Onika would want to mention husbands in general considering hers has a rap sheet dating back as far as when she was still in elementary but we’ll get to that in a second. Onika continues her shenanigans by pulling the typical weak straw man argument of “Well, what about [inserts any white/nb celeb that’s appropriated black culture] ?” Hm… Very interesting to say the least.

Now surely the Harajuku Barbie would not be excusing somebody that’s not black using black culture to benefit themselves especially when she berated a certain Grammy-Award winning femcee for frequently using the N-word and calling black women ‘roaches’. Oh no! Not on Beyoncé’s internet, she didn’t! But of course she did and you wanna know why? Because she doesn’t actually care. Her association with 6ix9ine was proof of this and as a matter of fact, she deflected from being held accountable for doing a song with him by bringing up Lady Gaga doing a song with R Kelly in 2013 and throwing shots at you know who…. for openly supporting Kodak Black (another s*xual abuser) on Twitter.

But y’know the right screenshot is photoshopped according to the Barbz so we gonna move right along…

Troubling times like this genuinely make me question why exactly was I ever a fan of hers in the first place. Was she always this problematic all along and my naiveté blinded me from seeing it or did she just become more & more insufferable the older she got? In hindsight, nothing she’s doing now is completely out of character for her. She’s not ‘going out sad’. She is sad and has been for a while now. The reason why she can kiki with the worst of abusive men is because she shares the same exact low vibrational energy and moral bankruptcy. Not to mention, she has the same internally misogynistic skewed views about other women which brings me to another major factor as to why her career has taken a freefall in the past 4 years.

Nicki does not like other women.

Yeah, I know. Hard pill to swallow, right? I’ll admit for the longest, I truly believed back when her & Lil’ Kim were feuding that Kim was the bitter old hag. I believed Remy was a jealous hater when she dropped Shether but then…… I had an epiphany. She’s done other songs with other women but did she do them just because she was a good sport or for her own ulterior motives? From the looks from it, she’s had a conflict with just about all of them subsequently after the collaboration. Shall we re-evaluate the Cardi B. feud and how Motorsport played a major key in it all? Or maybe we’d rather discuss how Onika has seemingly been having a one-sided conflict with Megan over WAP & her friendship with Cardi? Maybe not. That’d require me to pull out too many receipts and quite frankly, my attention span is too short for that. I say all of that to reiterate once again that I have not nor will I ever take away from Nicki’s accolades or talent.

Nicki is an iconic veteran who has revitalized the brand of the modern-day female rapper and has went on to have major success. She reigned supreme for a hot minute and was the it girl of the 2010s. You could not turn on the radio without hearing Nicki Minaj’s verse on somebody’s song. You could not turn on the television without seeing her face either on a music video countdown on MTV or BET, on American Idol or on a commercial. There was no other mainstream female rapper on her level. We had Iggy Azalea for a good summer or two (Chile, she’s a whole mess & a half on her own but that’s another topic) but it pretty much started & stopped right there. There wasn’t a big break for mainstream female rap until 2017 when Cardi B dropped Bodak Yellow, the single that would catapult Cardi’s career and begin her winning streak.

It’d be silly for me to act like friendly beefs never happen within the female rap atmosphere and that Nicki should be singlehandedly responsible for female rap unity but just looking at how the influx of new female rappers came about, it does make me wonder: Why WAS she the only one? That question has been answered numerous times by anyone from fellow femcees past or present to label execs but for some reason, people refused to accept it. It was always someone plotting against Nicki and trying to silence her for being a confident & outspoken black woman but never about Nicki being a catty bitch with no redeemable qualities. It was always someone trying to dethrone her as Queen and take her spot which is ironic because her claim to fame was being Lil’ Kim’s musical daughter. (And before y’all try to argue me on this, I never negated that she was influenced by Foxy as well but that’s not what made her a hot topic in the tabloids.)

Fast forward to now, Nicki Minaj is alleged to have both indirectly and directly contacted her husband’s r*pe victim and offered to fly her & her family to LA so she can recant her statement. In result, he would be expunged off the s*x offenders list and would be able to freely travel with his celebrity wife. In addition, Nicki went on Queen Radio back in 2019 and created a narrative that her husband was ultimately railroaded by a racist judicial system because an older white woman preyed on him. Many of her hardcore stans are either actively harassing & victim-shaming Jen (while trying to prove that she’s not actually being harassed. 🙄) or they’re attempting to absolve her of all responsibility for her deliberate decision to not only publicly date a career criminal off the s*x offender’s list but to adopt his legal woes as well. It takes a special type of arrogance to think your money & power alone is enough for people to ignore the elephant of the room but yet again this speaks to the character of Onika.

This is the same woman who managed to write a letter to the judge requesting that they be more lenient towards her brothers sentence. Let’s also note the fact she utilized her very public platform on Twitter to paint a narrative that her brother’s (ex) wife only fabricated this ‘story’ about her own daughter being r*ped by her stepfather so she could extort his celebrity younger sister out of money. If it walks & talks like a r*pe apologist then more than likely, that’s exactly what it is. Sure. She can’t help who she’s related to however she can choose who she decides to make the father of her child(ren). Her poor choices in romantic partners or even male associates reveal a lot about her politics.

It’s quite sickening how the woman who once tweeted in 2012, “And for the record on sum serious shit, I think people who abuse children should be stoned to death in public. Period” would later change her tune when the abuser in question is her own kinfolk. It’s also very hypocritical that the woman who prides herself on being the only girl amongst all dudes and men being the inspiration to push her pen also cries about none of the fellow female rappers giving her her props. This just goes to reveal that hip hop culture as is today thrives off of misogyny & violence (whether it be physical, verbal or s*xual) so much to the point where the women in hip hop actually are fighting for an imaginary sense of respect & validation from their male peers that will never truly come into fruition. Often times we’ve wondered how so many abusers were able to exist so comfortably within hip hop without reaping any repercussions for their actions and it’s because we all have enabled them in the name of the ‘culture.’

The culture has evolved into a cesspool full of abusers & enablers and it truly saddens me because I’m a genuine fan of hip hop. I can’t even really pinpoint when it all started but as time progressed, it’s become a never-ending cycle and I just want to know why? Why has the same thing that was once created as a voice for the unheard become so disparaging against its own women? Why have the women accepted this as their norm? The answer to these questions may never make sense to me but until then, I’m done. I’m done with supporting people who I don’t morally align with what I stand for and if that means I have to throw away a lot of my childhood nostalgia, so be it. Compartmentalizing this type of behavior because I don’t want to give up the parts of a public figure I enjoy is extremely selfish and I never want to send off the message that’s ever okay under any circumstance. Someone is always watching and you never know who you may trigger just by you blindly supporting & publicly rallying behind a known abuser/abuse apologist.

Indigenous Languages Challenge #1: Wôpanâak

Name of the language is Wampanoag or Wôpanâak, which appears to properly be pronounced /wãpanaːak/. Technically considered a dialect of the Massachusett language, which refers to itself as hutuwôk /hətəwãk/.

Basic information - As you may have guessed, spoken around the area of Massachusetts, and just to the south. Officially considered extinct, according to glottolog, but experiencing a recent revival. Part of the Algonquin language family, which is ultimately Algic; Algic languages are dispersed across New England, much of mid- eastern Canada, and bits of the Midwest. There are two recognized Wôpanâak tribes today, the Mashpee Wampanoag and the Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head.

History - Wôpanâak is cool to me because of its somewhat unique status. The Wôpanâak people came into contact with colonials very early on, when there were few enough white folks that they actually had interest in communicating. As a result, we actually have an entire translation of the Bible into Wôpanâak, translated by the missionary John Elliot. Unfortunate and colonizing, yes - but this text, and the precedent of a Wôpanâak alphabet it established, preserved a huge sample of the language, relatively speaking. By the 1850s it was no longer spoken with any frequency, and it’s estimated that the last native / fluent speaker was Tamsen Weekes, who died around 1890. That is, the last until today! The preservation of these writings allowed Jessie Little Doe Baird, a linguist who studied at MIT, to use her studies to reconstruct aspects of the language and found...

Linguistic revitalization - the Wôpanâak Language Reclamation Project! Little Doe Baird, along with linguists Kenneth Hale and Norvin Richards, used these texts to reconstruct many aspects of the language, though there are some that are lost. The result was a fully functional language, and in the 2010s the Reclamation Project was able to declare that they had at least one child who could be considered native speaker! They literally unextincted a language. This is so, so cool, and a testimony to a huge of amount of work. I can’t find who else was involved - the Reclamation Project’s website doesn’t mention anyone but Little Doe Baird on its history page. The Reclamation Project continues to host immersion camps and classes, and recently opened an elementary school which now hosts several dozen students.

Linguistic Information:

Phonology - Voicing / aspiration are not phonemic in Wôpanâak. The consonant set notably lacks /f/, and has palatal series in addition to the alveolar and velar. There also doesn’t appear to be any approximants or trills - no /r/, /l/, or /ɹ/. And an interesting, vaguely four-vowel set; length is mostly associated with quality (i and u are long, ə is short), but there’s a three-way distinction between long, short, and nasalized a, it appears. I’m interested in reading some more on this, as it seems unusual. Nasalization of /a/ may also be associated with a change in quality? The language is distinctive for the large number of glide+vowel and vowel+vowel combinations, as illustrated wonderfully in /wãpanaːak/ itself.

Morphology - Wôpanâak has a rather large number of prefixes, suffixes, and even infixes for its nouns, which signify things like case, number, noun class (animate-inanimate), and, interestingly, absentation - a common feature in Algonquin languages which indicates that the noun died, was destroyed, or was lost. Similarly, verbs take a variety of affixes indicating subject (and subject’s person, number, animacy...) and transitivity.

Syntax - Did you know that the bible contains no double-wh questions? Little Doe Baird and Norvin Richards definitely do! Some quirks, especially of syntax, are impossible (at least in our current linguistic knowledge) to predict, and the only way we can know whether to say “what did you give to who” or “what to who did you give” is to hear it done. So, even though they absolutely scoured the text, they had no good way to be sure which to use. Unfortunately, a good bit of this type of information is probably lost, and are being added to the language as speakers need them, via educated guess and reconstruction from related languages. That anecdote out of the way, the high morphological complexity of Wôpanâak means that simple sentences can often be rendered as a single word, with the subject and object pronouns affixed to the verb, as well as that word order can be quite fluid. Nonetheless, it appears that the subject generally comes first, making it an SOV or SVO language; I’ll have to do some more research to say anything more.

Vocabulary - Being in early contact, Wôpanâak and its related languages are the source of a lot of English names, for the plants and animals of North America. The Reclamation Project lists several here, including pumpkin (pôhpukun), skunk (sukôk), and moose (m8s; the 8 character indicates /u/).

B.B. King

Riley B. King (September 16, 1925 – May 14, 2015), known by his stage name B.B. King, was an American blues singer, songwriter and guitarist.

Rolling Stone ranked King number 6 on its 2011 list of the 100 greatest guitarists of all time (previously ranked number 3 in the 2003 edition of the same list). He was ranked No. 17 in Gibson's "Top 50 Guitarists of All Time". According to Edward M. Komara, King "introduced a sophisticated style of soloing based on fluid string bending and shimmering vibrato that would influence virtually every electric blues guitarist that followed." King was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987. He is considered one of the most influential blues musicians of all time, earning the nickname "The King of the Blues", and one of the "Three Kings of the Blues Guitar" (along with Albert King and Freddie King). King was also known for performing tirelessly throughout his musical career, appearing at more than 200 concerts per year on average into his 70s. In 1956, he reportedly appeared at 342 shows.

In 1990, King was awarded the National Medal of Arts by President George H.W. Bush. In 2006, he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President George W. Bush. He is widely regarded as one of the most influential blues guitarists of all time, inspiring countless other electric blues and blues rock guitarists.

Biography

Early life

Riley B. King was born on September 16, 1925, on a cotton plantation near the town of Itta Bena, Mississippi, the son of sharecroppers Albert and Nora Ella King. He considered the nearby city of Indianola, Mississippi to be his home. When Riley was 4 years old, his mother left his father for another man, so the boy was raised by his maternal grandmother, Elnora Farr, in Kilmichael, Mississippi.

While young, King sang in the gospel choir at Elkhorn Baptist Church in Kilmichael. It seems that at the age of 12 he purchased his first guitar for $15.00, although another source indicates he was given his first guitar by Bukka White, his mother's first cousin (King's grandmother and White's mother were sisters). In 1943, King left Kilmichael to work as a tractor driver and play guitar with the Famous St. John's Quartet of Inverness, Mississippi, performing at area churches and on WGRM in Greenwood, Mississippi.

In 1946, King followed Bukka White to Memphis, Tennessee. White took him in for the next ten months. However, King returned to Mississippi shortly afterward, where he decided to prepare himself better for the next visit, and returned to West Memphis, Arkansas, two years later in 1948. He performed on Sonny Boy Williamson's radio program on KWEM in West Memphis, where he began to develop an audience. King's appearances led to steady engagements at the Sixteenth Avenue Grill in West Memphis and later to a ten-minute spot on the Memphis radio station WDIA. The radio spot became so popular that it was expanded and became the Sepia Swing Club.

Initially he worked at WDIA as a singer and disc jockey, gaining the nickname "Beale Street Blues Boy", which was later shortened to "Blues Boy" and finally to B.B. It was there that he first met T-Bone Walker. King said, "Once I'd heard him for the first time, I knew I'd have to have [an electric guitar] myself. 'Had' to have one, short of stealing!"

Career1949–2005

In 1949, King began recording songs under contract with Los Angeles-based RPM Records. Many of King's early recordings were produced by Sam Phillips, who later founded Sun Records. Before his RPM contract, King had debuted on Bullet Records by issuing the single "Miss Martha King" (1949), which did not chart well. "My very first recordings [in 1949] were for a company out of Nashville called Bullet, the Bullet Record Transcription company," King recalled. "I had horns that very first session. I had Phineas Newborn on piano; his father played drums, and his brother, Calvin, played guitar with me. I had Tuff Green on bass, Ben Branch on tenor sax, his brother, Thomas Branch, on trumpet, and a lady trombone player. The Newborn family were the house band at the famous Plantation Inn in West Memphis."

King assembled his own band; the B.B. King Review, under the leadership of Millard Lee. The band initially consisted of Calvin Owens and Kenneth Sands (trumpet), Lawrence Burdin (alto saxophone), George Coleman (tenor saxophone), Floyd Newman (baritone saxophone), Millard Lee (piano), George Joyner (bass) and Earl Forest and Ted Curry (drums). Onzie Horne was a trained musician elicited as an arranger to assist King with his compositions. By his own admission, King could not play chords well and always relied on improvisation.

King's recording contract was followed by tours across the United States, with performances in major theaters in cities such as Washington, D.C., Chicago, Los Angeles, Detroit, and St. Louis, as well as numerous gigs in small clubs and juke joints of the southern United States. During one show in Twist, Arkansas, a brawl broke out between two men and caused a fire. He evacuated along with the rest of the crowd but went back to retrieve his guitar. He said he later found out that the two men, who died in the blaze, were fighting over a woman named Lucille. He named the guitar Lucille as a reminder not to fight over women or run into any more burning buildings.

Following his first Billboard Rhythm and Blues charts number one, "3 O'Clock Blues" (February 1952), B.B. King became one of the most important names in R&B music in the 1950s, amassing an impressive list of hits including "You Know I Love You", "Woke Up This Morning", "Please Love Me", "When My Heart Beats like a Hammer", "Whole Lotta Love", "You Upset Me Baby", "Every Day I Have the Blues", "Sneakin' Around", "Ten Long Years", "Bad Luck", "Sweet Little Angel", "On My Word of Honor", and "Please Accept My Love". This led to a significant increase in his weekly earnings, from about $85 to $2,500, with appearances at major venues such as the Howard Theater in Washington and the Apollo in New York, as well as touring the entire "Chitlin' circuit". 1956 became a record-breaking year, with 342 concerts booked and three recording sessions. That same year he founded his own record label, Blues Boys Kingdom, with headquarters at Beale Street in Memphis. There, among other projects, he produced artists such as Millard Lee and Levi Seabury. In 1962, King signed to ABC-Paramount Records, which was later absorbed into MCA Records, and which itself was later absorbed into Geffen Records. In November 1964, King recorded the Live at the Regal album at the Regal Theater in Chicago, Illinois.

King gained further visibility among rock audiences as an opening act on The Rolling Stones' 1969 American Tour. He won a 1970 Grammy Award for the song "The Thrill Is Gone"; his version became a hit on both the pop and R&B charts. It also gained the number 183 spot in Rolling Stone magazine's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

King was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame in 1980, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987, and the Official Rhythm & Blues Music Hall of Fame in 2014. In 2004, he was awarded the international Polar Music Prize, given to artists "in recognition of exceptional achievements in the creation and advancement of music."

From the 1980s to his death in 2015, he maintained a highly visible and active career, appearing on numerous television shows and performing 300 nights a year. In 1988, King reached a new generation of fans with the single "When Love Comes to Town", a collaborative effort between King and the Irish band U2 on their Rattle and Hum album. In December 1997, he performed in the Vatican's fifth annual Christmas concert and presented his trademark guitar "Lucille" to Pope John Paul II. In 1998, he appeared inThe Blues Brothers 2000, playing the part of the lead singer of the Louisiana Gator Boys, along with Eric Clapton, Dr. John, Koko Taylor and Bo Diddley. In 2000, he and Clapton teamed up again to record Riding With the King, which won a Grammy Award for Best Traditional Blues Album.

2006–2015: farewell tour and later activities

In 2006, King went on a "farewell" world tour, although he remained active afterward during the last years of his life. The tour was partly supported by Northern Irish guitarist Gary Moore, with whom King had previously toured and recorded, including the song "Since I Met You Baby". It started in the United Kingdom, and continued with performances in the Montreux Jazz Festival and in Zürich at the Blues at Sunset. During his show in Montreux at the Stravinski Hall he jammed with Joe Sample, Randy Crawford, David Sanborn, Gladys Knight, Lella James, Andre Beeka, Earl Thomas, Stanley Clarke, John McLaughlin, Barbara Hendricks and George Duke.

In June 2006, King was present at a memorial of his first radio broadcast at the Three Deuces Building in Greenwood, Mississippi, where an official marker of the Mississippi Blues Trail was erected. The same month, a groundbreaking was held for a new museum, dedicated to King. in Indianola, Mississippi. The B.B. King Museum and Delta Interpretive Center opened on September 13, 2008.

In late October 2006, King recorded a concert album and video entitled B.B. King: Live at his B.B. King Blues Clubs in Nashville and Memphis. The four-night production featured his regular B.B. King Blues Band and captured his show as he performed it nightly around the world. Released in 2008, it was his first live performance recording in over a decade.

In 2007, King played at Eric Clapton's second Crossroads Guitar Festival and contributed the songs "Goin' Home", to Goin' Home: A Tribute to Fats Domino (with Ivan Neville's DumpstaPhunk) and "One Shoe Blues" to Sandra Boynton's children's album Blue Moo, accompanied by a pair of sock puppets in a music video for the song.

In the summer of 2008, King played at the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival in Manchester, Tennessee, where he was given a key to the city. Also in 2008, he was inducted into the Hollywood Bowl Hall of Fame.

King performed at the Mawazine festival in Rabat, Morocco, on May 27, 2010. In June 2010, King performed at the Crossroads Guitar Festival with Robert Cray, Jimmie Vaughan, and Eric Clapton. He also contributed to Cyndi Lauper's album Memphis Blues, which was released on June 22, 2010.

In 2011, King played at the Glastonbury Music Festival, and in the Royal Albert Hall in London, where he recorded a concert video.

On February 21, 2012, King was among the performers of "In Performance at the White House: Red, White and Blues", during which President Barack Obama sang part of "Sweet Home Chicago". King recorded for the debut album of rapper and producer Big K.R.I.T., who also hails from Mississippi. On July 5, 2012, King performed a concert at the Byblos International Festival in Lebanon.

On May 26, 2013, King appeared at the New Orleans Jazz Festival.

On October 3, 2014, not feeling well enough, King had to stop his live performance at the House of Blues in Chicago, Illinois. A doctor diagnosed King with dehydration and suffering from exhaustion. Hence, the eight remaining shows of his ongoing tour had to be cancelled. King didn't schedule any additional shows for the remainder of the year.

Illness and death

After the cancellation of the remaining eight shows of his 2014 tour because of health problems, King announced on October 8, 2014 he was back at home to recuperate. On May 1, 2015, after two hospitalizations caused by complications from high blood pressure and diabetes, King announced on his website that he was in hospice care at his home in Las Vegas, Nevada. He died there on May 14 at 9:40 PM PDT.

Equipment

B.B. King used simple equipment. He played guitars made by various manufacturers early in his career: he played a Fender Telecaster on most of his recordings with RPM Records (USA). However, he was best known for playing variants of the Gibson ES-355. In 1980 Gibson Guitar Corporation launched the B.B. King Lucille model. In 2005 Gibson made a special run of 80 Gibson Lucilles, referred to as the "80th Birthday Lucille", the first prototype of which was given as a birthday gift to King, and which he used ever since.

King used a Lab Series L5 2x12" combo amplifier and had been using this amplifier for a long time. It was made by Norlin Industries for Gibson in the 1970s and 1980s. Other popular L5 users are Allan Holdsworth and Ty Tabor of King's X. The L5 has an onboard compressor, parametric equalization, and four inputs. King also used a Fender Twin Reverb.

He used his signature model strings "Gibson SEG-BBS B.B. King Signature Electric Guitar Strings" with gauges: 10-13-17p-32w-45w-54w and D'Andrea 351 MD SHL CX (Medium .71mm, Tortoise Shell, Celluloid) Picks.

B.B. King's Blues Club

In 1991, B.B. King's Blues Club opened on Beale Street in Memphis, and in 1994, a second club was launched at Universal City Walk in Los Angeles. A third club in New York City's Times Square opened in June 2000. Two further clubs opened at Foxwoods Casino in Connecticut in January 2002 and another in Nashville in 2003. Another club opened in Orlando in 2007. A club in West Palm Beach opened in the fall of 2009 and an additional one, based in the Mirage Hotel, Las Vegas, opened in the winter of 2009.

Philanthropy

In 2002, King signed on as an official supporter of Little Kids Rock, a nonprofit organization that provides free musical instruments and instruction to children in underprivileged public schools throughout the United States. He sat on LKR's Honorary Board of Directors.

Television and other appearances

King made guest appearances in numerous popular television shows, including The Cosby Show, The Young and the Restless,General Hospital, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Sesame Street, Married... with Children, Sanford and Son, and Touched by an Angel. He also had a cameo in the movies Spies Like Us and Heart and Souls. He voiced a character in the last episode of Cow and Chicken.

In 2000, the children's show Between The Lions featured a singing character named "B.B. the King Of Beasts", modeled on the real King.

A feature documentary about King narrated by Morgan Freeman and directed by Jon Brewer was released on October 15, 2012.

King appeared twice on the PBS television series Austin City Limits in 1983 and 1996.

Commercials

King, who was diabetic, appeared in several television commercials for OneTouch Ultra in the 2000s and early 2010s. He appeared in a 2014 commercial for the Toyota Camry with his guitar Lucille.

Personal life

King was married twice, to Martha Lee Denton, 1946 to 1952, and to Sue Carol Hall, 1958 to 1966. The failure of both marriages has been attributed to the heavy demands made on the marriage by King's 250 performances a year. It is reported that he has fathered 15 children and, as of 2004, had 50 grandchildren. He lived with Type II diabetes for over 20 years and was a high-profile spokesperson in the fight against the disease, appearing in advertisements for diabetes-management products along with American Idol season 9 contestant Crystal Bowersox.

King was an FAA certificated private pilot and learned to fly in 1963 at what was then Chicago Hammond Airport in Lansing, Illinois. He frequently flew to gigs but, under the advice of his insurance company and manager in 1995, King was asked to fly only with another certified pilot. As a result, he stopped flying around the age of 70.

King's favorite singer was Frank Sinatra. In his autobiography he spoke about how he was a "Sinatra nut" and how he went to bed every night listening to Sinatra's classic album In the Wee Small Hours. Sinatra had gotten King into the main clubs in Las Vegas during the 1960s, He credited Sinatra for opening doors to black entertainers who were not given the chance to play in "white-dominated" venues.
