In honor of Robert Fuller's 90th (!!!) birthday today (July 29, 2023), I'm posting about meeting him last month at the MidSouth Nostalgia Festival. @sportstudfan put me up to this, lol. Hope y'all enjoy it!
The MidSouth Nostalgia Festival was held on June 8-10 in Olive Branch, Mississippi. That's just south of Memphis, Tennessee for anyone like me who had never heard of the place. The festival brought together a bunch of classic actors (and one or two contemporary), who mainly appeared in Westerns but from some other genres as well.
The first morning we were there, we got right in line to schedule a time to see Robert, or Bob as his fans call him. Most guests had tables that you could walk right up to, but such is his popularity that his fan club orchestrates time slots to make sure everyone who attends has time to speak with him and get autographs and photos. It was a pretty good system, I believe we waited less than 2 hours. We were able to get into his first group of the day. When Bob showed up, he walked right by the line and greeted everyone very enthusiastically and gave out hugs to some of the more eager fans. I could only smile as he went by because I was honestly starstruck by this point.
Tumblr media
Once our turn came up, we probably got a good five minutes talking to him. I got the impression he would've allowed us to stay even longer, but we tried to be sensitive to the others waiting to see him. We discussed some of his stunts, such as jumping onto Hoot (his horse) in Duel at Alta Mesa. He confirmed that yes, that was actually him and not a stunt actor. He also told us about breaking his leg on Wagon Train. There was a stunt involving a breakaway chair and he wanted to re-shoot it, but he neglected to check the chair beforehand. It had been replaced with an actual chair! We also talked about his quick draw abilities, and he informed us he had been clocked at 28/100ths of a second. Talk about fast! Before we left his table, we got his autograph on a photo from his Emergency! days. If I ever get to meet Randy Mantooth, I plan to point out that Bob's signature went over his forehead, so he can give him Hell about it.
Tumblr media
Something that really amused me watching Bob interact with his fans is how much attention he gives everyone. He was more than happy to hand out hugs and kissed many of the women in attendance. He even autographed a woman's chest (upper sternum, lol) so she could get it tattooed. Keep in mind most of the fans were middle-aged or elderly women, who had fallen in love with him during their youth. The guy's still got it!
We also attended a few panels. The photo below is from one of them; from left to right we have Tony Cameron (son of Rod Cameron, one of my favorite Laramie guest actors), Patrick Wayne (2nd son of John Wayne), the panel interviewer, and Bob. All of the guys were really enjoyable to listen to. Tony is dedicated to keeping his dad's legacy alive and is just a lovely person in his own right. Patrick was very funny and used his some of his time on the panel to advocate for the John Wayne Cancer Foundation.
Tumblr media
There was also a panel with Bob and his wife Jennifer Savidge that I unfortunately did not take pictures of. Those two are great together, they had everyone laughing and you could really tell how much they love one another. Jennifer is also incredibly gracious about the attention Bob gets from his fans. She's a wonderful actress in her own right, having been on her own medical series St. Elsewhere, JAG, and much more.
The MSNF also had vendor tables where you could purchase comic books, memorabilia, or even original art. One woman rented a vendor table so she could share her miniature Sherman Ranch! She removed the roofs so we could see inside the ranch house and barn. She also told us she has swappable backgrounds for different times of year. We were really impressed with the detail and talent that went into her creation.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
On the last day of the festival, we had a photo taken with Bob and Jennifer. We dressed up as Slim and Jess. The first thing Bob said to us was "Wow!", so I think he liked the outfits. ;) On the way out, a few other fans in line stopped us to tell us how much they liked our costumes, which felt really great.
Tumblr media
And that was pretty much it! It was honestly one of the more laid-back conventions I've been to. I wasn't used to having a bunch of downtime between the things I wanted to do. It was also a little weird being one of the younger fans there, but everyone was pretty nice and we were all there for the same reason: to meet Bob!
Bonus pic: while in Memphis we visited the largest Bass Pro Shop I've ever seen, known as The Pyramid. The inside looks like outdoors (as is normal with every Bass Pro), but it was lit like nighttime with string lights and stuff. Along with the usual fish tanks, there was a pond with ducks. I unfortunately did not pay to ride the elevator to the observation deck.

I take things that have been autographed with a grain of salt. Very rarely do I buy autographed items because.. well. It can be risky.
But it's also not everyday you run across an Emergency! script signed by Robert Fuller. Especially one with proof that he actually signed it.
So anyway, I'm $108 poorer but now I have a script from my favourite tv show signed by my favourite actor. I see it as an absolute win.
When I tell you I'm going to read this thing from front to back I'm afraid I'm not kidding. I'm thoroughly enjoying reading this while Adam-12 plays in the background

Now hear me out
What if right
What if brackett had a fish tank in his office
I feel like I'm dumping my hobby onto my favourite character but like there was potential hear me out
I was absolutely obsessed with the episode Tee Vee when I was younger, still am. But I think part of it had to do with the idea of Kel having a fish tank in his office. Ignore my absolute projecting but what if my guy like. Idk decided after the whole thing to get his own fish tank
It wouldn't even have to be a huge one, like a 10 gallon with a betta and snail would've sufficed just fine lmao. Like he's someone I could imagine actually doing to research and being a wonderful fish dad. I could totally see him siphoning out a fish tank, researching a proper diet, teaching a betta tricks like following his finger or going through a hoop with frozen food or something. Can you imagine like Joe or Dixie's reaction if one day he's throwing a fit over a fish tank in his office and the next month he has his own with a betta named Hoot (absolutely not inspired by Bob Fuller's horse what do you mean). See the vision
I'd love to write this or something but my fanfic writing ended years ago and I will not be stepping back into it with this LMFAO. I'd get the characters insanely wrong.
Anyway if anyone yknow. What's to write it hit me up and I can help with fish info. Here's my resume

That My Days Have Been A Dream
Day 29
DAY 29 Title: Something Wicked This Way Comes -W Shakespeare (Also -R Bradbury) Prompt: Sleep Deprivation
Johnny worked out of Harbor General now, so it was several months before anyone from Rampart or Station 51 saw him.
He took their breath away.
He was gaunt and haunted looking. His eyes were dull, and his hair all but shaved. He didn't smile, there was no glimmer of recognition or remembrance of the old days.
He was faded, like a picture out of focus.
Roy happened to be at the base station when he walked out of the exam room he'd taken his patient to.
Their eyes met and everything around them seemed to freeze, and the picture came into focus. For a fraction of a second, they were the whole, happy, beautiful men they were once so long ago. Then Johnny dropped his eyes, and walked out the door.
Dixie, who witnessed the whole thing, barely heard Roy's broken plea.
"Don't go."
That night Dixie dreamed of vases of flowers and freshly turned earth.
Dr. Brackett dreamed of an endless pile of autopsies and death certificates.
Dr. Early dreamed of New Orleans jazz bands and funeral processions.
Dr. Morton dreamed of black suits and constricting neckties.
When they compared notes, bleary eyed and grumpy, over the coffee pot the next morning, they agreed.
Something big was coming.
That night, Chet dreamed of the wailing banshees his mother would scare him with as a child.
That night, Marco dreamed of brightly painted skulls laughing with chattering teeth.
That night, Mike dreamed of rows and rows of white crosses.
That night, Cap dreamed of blue clad men with white hats saluting a long procession of flashing lights.
And, as one by one they woke and slowly shuffled into the day room where Roy spent his long sleep deprived nights, they agreed.
Something big was coming.

Sicktember 10: Excessive Use of Tissues
Thanks once again to my awesome writing partner Xav!
C. Kelly/A Shift/Emergency!
Chet was sleeping in his bunk in the station when something woke him up. His eyes cracked open, and he was aware something wasn’t right. His face hurt, and he realized there was fluid leaking from his nose. He put his hand up to his nose, and his hand got wet. He sat up and reached for his bunker pants. He hurried into the latrine. Sure enough, his nose was bleeding, fairly heavily. He wasn’t terribly alarmed, because the weather had been very hot and dry. He figured the bleed was due to that.
He reached for the box of Kleenex sitting on the counter and after wiping his nose, packed some in both nostrils. He took the box with him and went into the dayroom to wait for the bleeding to stop. He figured it was no big deal and saw no reason to bother any of his sleeping station mates. He simply sat down at the table and tipped his head back, replacing the Kleenex as needed. He was still there fifteen minutes later.
Marco awoke to the call of nature. As he rubbed his eyes and sat up, he noticed that Chet was not on his bed. A trickle of moonlight through the window revealed a dark stain on his pillow, too. Marco was pretty drowsy, though, and it didn’t really register what it was. He pulled on his bunker pants, then trudged toward the latrine. No Chet there. He did his business, then--a little more awake--decided to go out to the day room and find his friend.
When he got there, he saw Chet sitting at the table with his head tilted back and tissues stuffed in his nostrils. The sight would have been amusing if those tissues weren’t both blood-soaked. “Ai ai ai, amigo!” He ran back to the latrine, grabbed a washcloth, and soaked it in cold water, then hurried back to Chet. “Mama always told me, lean forward, not back, or it all goes down your throat.” He slapped the wet washcloth on the back of Chet’s neck. “That should help.”
“Thanggs, bal.” Chet’s voice was muffled, and he sounded as if he were in a bit of distress. “I been doin’ this for a while. It ain’t stobbin.”
“I’m gonna get Roy. He’ll know what to do.” Marco pulled a wad of fresh tissues from the box and thrust them at Chet. “You should change those out.” Then he hurried back to the dormitory.
Chet nodded, and quickly did so. Crimson blood stained the fresh white tissues quickly. Now Chet was a little worried.
Marco gently shook Roy awake. “Hey, Roy!” He kept his voice low, but the urgency in his tone quickly woke both Roy and Johnny. “Chet’s got a bad nosebleed, and it isn’t stopping. You’d better come.”
Roy shook himself awake, pulled on his bunker pants, and got up. Johnny followed suit. Together, the trio hurried to the dayroom.
“What’s up, Chet?” Johnny quipped, but the sight of those stained tissues, both the ones in use and the discarded ones, quickly killed any teasing he might have done. Something was really wrong for him to be bleeding like that. “Hey, you’d better pinch the bridge of your nose.”
The commotion woke Mike and Cap who came in to see what was going on. Cap called the station out temporarily until they could get a handle on what was happening.
Chet pinched his nose as asked but winced at the pain it caused. The bleeding didn’t slow much either.
“Looks like you’re in pain, pal,” Roy said. He sat down next to Chet.
Mike asked if they wanted their gear.
Roy nodded. “Yeah. Thanks, Mike.”
Meanwhile, Johnny moved to the sink. He filled a glass with water and sprinkled some cayenne pepper in it. He brought it back to the table. “Drink this.”
Chet rolled his eyes but drank the concoction. The bleeding did stop finally.
Chet was impressed and said so, and was all for forgetting the whole thing, but the others were not so inclined. They still needed to know what had caused such a heavy bleed. Rampart was the only answer for that.
After getting some details from Chet, Roy put in the call on the biophone. “Rampart, this is 51. We have a fireman who suffered a severe nosebleed. It finally stopped, but it lasted about half an hour and soaked through almost a full box of tissues. What do you advise?”
Kel Brackett didn’t like the sound of it at all, especially when he learned why it had stopped. Not that he was against the remedy, necessarily, but he was worried about the underlying cause. *
“51, is the victim dehydrated as a result? If so, start an IV ringers lactate TKO and transport asap either way. If you want to bring him in the squad, that works. Which fireman are we talking about, by the way?”
“Chet Kelly.” Roy determined that Chet was indeed dehydrated and started the IV as ordered. “We’ll bring him by Squad. Thanks, Rampart.”
When they got Chet into Treatment Two, Kel checked him over thoroughly and confirmed his suspicion. He asked Kelly, “Were you on a strenuous rescue or fire earlier today, one where you personally were under a lot of stress or strain?”
Chet thought about it and nodded. “Yeah, as a matter of fact. We fought a pretty hairy house fire this morning. Why?”
“Do you remember bumping your face on anything?”
Chet’s forehead furrowed as he thought. “Yeah, actually. I did. Or it bumped me… my helmet got knocked off and before I could pick it up, some debris fell and hit me in the face. I thought I got off easy--it didn’t knock me out or anything.”
“What it did was damage some of the blood vessels in your sinus area… and they finally burst after the pressure was off when you went to sleep. If you hadn’t awakened, you could have potentially bled out, Chet.”
Chet’s eyes just about bugged out at that. “Ya mean… Gage saved my life with that concoction he gave me?” He side-eyed the paramedic, who was looking pretty pleased with himself.
“I believe he certainly helped. They could have packed your soft palate with gauze as well, but it would have been much more uncomfortable for you. Either way, your waking up when you did was the key.”
Chet nodded slowly. The prospect of owing a life-debt to his favorite pigeon had been rather disheartening. He would just chalk up his survival to his own brilliance in not sleeping through the nosebleed. “Well… I don’t know about more uncomfortable. That stuff tasted nasty.” The Phantom was already contemplating payback.
Brackett eyed him sharply. “Well, you aren’t going anywhere for at least 24 hours. I’m admitting you. You lost a lot of blood, and I want you where I can keep an eye on you. I’m ordering a couple of units of plasma for you. And arguing with me will get you nowhere fast.”
“Aww, Doc. I feel f--” His protest was cut short by a yawn. He’d been going to say he felt fine, but really, he didn’t. He felt wobbly. And really tired. Still, he hated staying at the hospital. “Fine, Doc. Whatever you say. Guess I can catch up on my beauty sleep.”
Johnny guffawed at that. “You’ll need a lot more sleep than you can get in 24 hours for that, Chet.”
Chet smiled sleepily, “Aw, go play in traffic, Gage!”
The End
*Cayenne pepper dissolved in water drops blood pressure and can stop a nosebleed. Just a fun fact...

“You okay?” Daniel asked me as I shut my locker and grabbed my backpack.
“No.” I said softly. Daniel wrapped his free arm around my waist and hugged me into his side. He led me to his car and opened the door for me. I climbed in and set my backpack on my lap.
Daniel rounded the car and got in. He looked at me sadly and kissed my cheek. Then we started driving.
“Do you want to talk about it?” He asked me.
“Uh, not right now. I’m sorry Daniel.” I told my boyfriend.
“No it’s okay baby, don’t be sorry. We’ll talk when you’re ready.” He said giving me a small sad smile. I nodded and held his hand.
Who would I be able to talk to about these feelings? The men would just hug me and tell me it’s okay but I didn’t want that. I only really have one female role model in my whole life. Sure Roy’s wife, Joanne is so sweet but I only see her at least once every month.
I could go to Dixie about this. I just wouldn’t want to bother her.
“Hey Daniel, instead of the fire station can you drop me off at rampart?” I asked him. He nodded and squeezed my hand.
“You’re not pregnant are you?” He asked me jokingly.
I laughed a little, “no I’m not.” I said playfully.
Daniel smiled and we pulled up to the hospital. He parked in a empty space and we kissed.
“Promise me you will be okay?” He made me promise. I promised and I got out of the car with my backpack. I walked into the huge hospital and went for the elevator and pushed the floor button Dixie worked on. It moved me up to the correct floor and I got off it.
As I walked down the hall I felt a little guilty. I didn’t want to distract her from patients. As I started to think about it I could handle my feelings on my own, I started to cry.
First it was soft tears but then I was sobbing quietly. I opened the door to the reception room and turned to the reception nurse.
“H-hi Michelle, c-can you call Dixie up here for me?” I asked the older lady. She nodded and gave me a sad smile. The lady called for Dixie and I waited beside the desk.
Many people were looking at me and would whisper to the people with them. I bit my lip and wrapped my arms around my waist and I waited for Dixie.
I saw her and her eyes immediately went soft and she grabbed my hand and led me to Dr.Bracketts office. She set me in his big leather chair and set my bag beside the desk.
I was still sobbing and she gave me a tight hug. She rubbed my back and I sobbed into her chest.
“What’s wrong y/n?” She asked me as she pulled away and pulled up a chair beside me.
“I miss my mom. I need her I miss her I can’t do this without her.” I cried. Dixie frowned and rubbed my back.
“I miss her so much.” I sobbed. I could see from all my tears and it was getting hard to breath. It felt like my lungs were shrinking. I started to hyperventilate and I grabbed Dixie lightly by her arm and started to freak out.
“I can’t breath. I can’t breath!” I sobbed more. Dixie quickly grabbed my hands and held them loosely in her lap.
“Okay breath with me y/n it’s okay.” She said as she did some breathing exercises with me. By the time I could breath again Dr.Brackett was entering the room.
He furrowed his eyebrows when he saw me but then his face was full of knowing. He pulled up another chair on my other side. I was still crying a little but not as bad.
“Hi y/n.” He said softly as he tucked my hair behind my ear.
“Hey Dr.Brackett. I can leave if you need me to. I just needed someone to be there for me.” I said quietly.
Dr.Brackett shook his head and put a hand on my shoulder.
“You can stay as long as you need. You’re missing your mother aren’t you?” He asked me.
I choked on my breath and stared to cry again as I nodded. He rubbed my back and I cried for a couple more hours.
—————————
Dixie drove me to the fire station and when I entered all the men looked at me. I gave them a small sad smile and went into my room. I dropped my bag beside my bed and went to my bathroom. I turned the water on and stepped into my stand up shower.
The water soaked my clothes almost immediately and made them stick to my body. My black pants, now even darker and were suctioned to my lower body. My pink shirt with flower designs now a dark pink and also sticking to my upper body. You could see my bra outline clear as day and even the dark color of it a little.
I sat on the ground of my shower and pulled my knees up to my chest. I rested my chin on my knee and I cried more. I miss her so much.
I have no idea how long I stayed like that. Even when all the hot water ran out and it was freezing cold I stayed in the same position, crying.
My dad, Johnny and Marco knocked on my bathroom sore to ask if I was okay and I always said I was. I knew I shouldn’t have been isolating myself like this, especially when my dad is hurting about my mom too. But I just wanted to be alone and be numb.
The cold water numbed my body enough for me to not be able to move my fingers. I started to get tired and I felt my eyes grow heavy and start to shut.
But then my bathroom door slammed open and all the guys stood there at the door. I couldn’t move my head to look at the men. I felt so weak.
All at once again, the men rushed to me and started to aid me.
Roy turned off the water and Johnny got a towel and handed it to my dad. He wrapped me in it and picked me up, carrying me to my bed. Chet sat down three towels so I would get my bed wet, then my dad laid me down on my bed.
Roy quickly took my temperature and waited. It was tense in the room and no words were spoken.
Then when Roy pulled back the thermometer he winced.
“It’s 94 Fahrenheit .” He said with a sad voice.
“I can call Joanne and ask her to come and help y/n change.” Roy said as he rushed out of the room. Johnny and my dad were rubbing my body with warm towels from the dryer.
Then in what felt like seconds Joanne came rushing in the room. She came to me and moved my hair out of my face.
“Alright guys get out, I’ll be fast.” She shoved all the men out and shut my bedroom door.
The older woman helped me stand up and strip me of my clothes. She got more warm towels and dried my body off. She helped me walk over to my bed once more and I sat down on one of the towels. She searched through my dresser and pulled out some underwear, shorts and an old grey stripped shirt that used to belong to Chet.
She dressed me then dried out my hair carefully with a warm towel and a hot hair dryer. She brushed out my hair gently and then helped me brush my teeth.
She then helped me to the bed and threw all the towels in the dirty towels bin and tucked me into bed.
When she finished everything she hugged me. And I hugged her back.
“Thank you Joanne.” I told her weakly. She smiled and kissed me on my head. She took my hand in hers and smiled.
“I’ll go tell the guys you’re done.” She said as she squeezed my hand. Then she left the room.
Soon all the men piled in my room and gently asked how I was feeling. My dad sat beside me on my bed while Johnny, Roy and Marco stood beside the bed. Mike and Chet were at the foot of the bed.
“What’s wrong y/n?” My dad asked. Tears spilled from my eyes and my dad pulled me into a hug.
“I miss mom.” I sobbed and buried my face into my dads chest. All the men frowned and sighed lightly.
“Can you guys give us a minute.” My dad announced to his men. They all nodded and left my room, closing the door behind them.
“I kiss her so much.” I cried. My dad squeezed me lightly and cradled my head to his chest.
“I miss her too.” He said quietly as he started to rock me back and fourth.
“You were her pride and joy y/n. She love you so much, probably even more than me. She was so happy when she found out she was pregnant with you.” My dad said as he rested his head on top of mine.
“We were only twenty three but we were so happy to start a family. When you were born she spent every minute she could with you. She loved you so much. We wanted to give you a little sibling when you turned eight. But that’s when she got sick.” He continued. I buried my head deeper into my dads chest and he kissed my head.
He turned and grabbed a framed picture from my nightstand and held it in his lap. I pulled away from our hug and laid my head on his shoulder. I looked at the picture and smiled.
It was a picture of me, my dad and my mom when we went to Silver Dollar City for my eighth birthday. She got sick later that year and suffered for four more years until she died. I was 13 and she and my dad were 36.
“She was so beautiful.” I said as I admired her beautiful hair and her gorgeous smile.
“You looked like her. Your e/c eyes are just like hers. And your beautiful y/h/c hair is just how hers was. She loves you y/n, I love you too.” My dad said. I yawned lightly and my dad kissed my forehead.
He got up from my bed and tucked me in. He gave me one last kiss on my head and bid me Goodnight. Then I fell asleep.

For those of you that watch Emergency!
I recently watched the first two episodes for the first time (I’ve been watching the series for a while and just had never gotten around to the two-part pilot). And boy do I have some opinions on it. Fair warning, if Brackett is your favorite character you may want to avoid this post because I’m about to rain down some serious hate on him. As usual, this is all just my opinion, so do with it what you will.
Brackett made me so freaking mad in these episodes. He was insufferable. I don’t even know where to begin. Let’s start with his disapproval of the whole idea of a paramedic. I mean, why?? It was such a good idea. You literally train people to be able to give medical attention at the scene, thus saving more lives. The whole problem was that people were dying at the scenes of various accidents, whether they were vehicle, cardiac, drowning, etc. And this was because there wasn’t enough time to get them to the hospitals so the doctors could treat them. The whole point was to save more lives or at least buy them more time so that they could make it to the hospital. I really don’t know why he would be against it. He literally played a part in training the paramedics. He knew what they were being taught and saw them work. And then when asked he can’t really give coherent reasoning other than “they’re not doctors.”
I hate how he refers to them as mere hose jockeys. Like seriously?? Firemen are out there risking their lives to save people!!! They’re running into burning buildings and dragging people out and he just has the audacity to talk about them like they don’t do much. Maybe not the biggest deal, but still it irked me.
Bless Dixie’s heart, she tried so hard to show him why paramedics were a good idea. I love when she slammed him with a “this is why you’re not married.” He was being so stubborn and childish and he had it coming. And then he has the audacity to fire back at her “this is why you’re not married.” Be more creative with your insults, 😂😂. Dixie, of course, realizes this isn’t going anywhere and says she wants to leave. And as they were walking back out I could see Brackett hesitating to put his arm around her and I was like “don’t you dare!!” Thank goodness he didn’t.
The scene at Johnny’s birthday party was glorious. We got to see Roy’s wife, Joann!! I so wish we could’ve seen more of her. She was absolutely darling. Johnny’s face when he saw Brackett was PRICELESS. I could feel the sass and I was here for it. And then he had some words for Brackett and I was just like YES YES YES. And then Brackett got all sour and left. Why did Dixie put so much effort to try to get him to stay?? Like girl, just let him leave, you don’t need that in your life. #joeearlyissuperiorsis
When Johnny said “to hell with the orders” and turned off the biophone, I nearly screamed. The angst. The sass. This scene was everything. I love you, Johnny Gage.
When Brackett goes to speak to try and convince all of the politicians to vote for this bill, I was once again irked because he says he’s still not for the bill, then goes on to list countless reasons why it’s a good idea. And then he ends it with “until we get better equipment and more hospitals with more doctors, this will have to suffice.” Like bro. I know you just didn’t. I can’t. *face palms*
The ending was perfect. They finish their little flashback ordeal and then Squad 51 gets a call. Now throughout the flashbacks, Roy calls Johnny junior. As they hop into the squad to go on their current call, he throws it in and once again calls Johnny junior. I just thought this was a nice touch.
Can we talk about Pete Malloy from Adam-12 hitting on Dixie?? 😂😂 I nearly died, it was just so freaking hilarious. Now, I’m not a fan of Adam-12, but this was comedy gold. At this point, Malloy was a much better choice than Brackett 😂
