Some things I've been wondering lately is what specific media did people on the ace/aro spectrum naturally gravitate towards before they realized those identities had labels/a community associated with them.
I grew up when the teen paranormal/dystopian romance genre was at its height, so my book recommendations are going to reflect that:
The Darkest Powers trilogy by Kelley Armstrong: This was the first ever published book series that had a realistic (to me) romance. It was both a slow burn and a friends-to-lovers. Best of all you can easily interpret both the female protagonist and her male love interest as demi by how they're written. They're still one of my favorite nostalgic couples to this day.
Bloodlines series by Richelle Mead: This series is a spin-off from Vampire Academy and was the second published book series that I read that did the slow burn/friends-to-lovers tropes, but it did it even better. Mainly because their romance developed over six books instead of three. Also, the books acknowledge the female protagonist's sexuality. The term "demisexual" isn't used, but the basic definition of it is in the text to describe her feelings.
The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins: I think nobody needs an explanation for this one, but if you've only watched the movies, you miss a lot of the context/nuance of Katniss' POV. I've seen Katniss headcanoned as having a lot of different sexualities, but she reads very strongly as a demiromantic asexual to me, personally.
Feel free to leave your own recommendations in the comments/reblogs!
