I’m Jules (they/them), and welcome to my DA blog. This is a sideblog so I will follow from @sunrisenfool, which is my main blog.

I’m 28, mixed latine and slav, and a person of colour. I like world-building and creating fake legal systems for fantasy worlds. My favourite class to play is rogues, and my favourite race are elves because that’s the fantasy race I decided to latch on as a person of colour to project feelings into the narrative. You know how it is sometimes.

Sometimes I have very particular opinions about certain things in canon, but if I ever talk about them please don’t take them as a personal attack because unless someone is being an asshole, harmful or both in my posts, I will never address things personally. I just think differently.

Worldstate, Side A: ‘What is Right Over What is Easy’

Warden: 🌙 Juno Mahariel 🌙 (they/them)

Stats: Rogue, crowsbow sharpshooter. Nonbinary bisexual. Ranger, assassin and scout legionarie. Convincing. Dalish hunter, Warden-Commander of Ferelden. Best friends with Alistair, Morrigan (used to have a crush on) and Rahvi Brosca (@atypicalacademic), romances Zevran and Sahi Tabris (@atypicalacademic).

Protects the circle mages, crowns Bhelen and later supports Vijaya Aeducan’s (@atypicalacademic) coup. Does the ritual with Morrigan, slayer of the Archdemon with Rhavi Brosca.

Twin and youngest sibling of @atypicalacademic‘s Gaadha Mahariel and Eravan Mahariel. Recruits everyone but Loghain, whom they kill in a duel claiming the Vir Banal’ras. Keeps Duncan’s dagger until their death. Saves Amaranthine, their Keep survives. Helps rebuild the Wardens in Inquisition.

Dies a Warden’s Death.

Champion: 🎭 Rowan Hawke 🎭 (she/her)

Stats: Rogue, dual wielder. Nonbinary, bisexual. Duelist and assassin. Charismatic, helpful. Smuggler and Champion of Kirkwall. Bethany survives and becomes a circle mage. Best friends with Varric, Bela and Merrill. Romances Fenris.

Cousin of @atypicalacademic‘s Maxim and Milena Hawke. Does not help Anders but opposes Meredith. Eventually makes up with Sebastian. Is enemies with Aveline.

Knew Malcolm’s secret and would’ve taken it to her death were it not for the events of Legacy. Survives the siege of Adamant. Married to Fenris, helps him in his travels as the Blue Wraith - they are eventually known as the Blue Wraith and the High Red Queen.

Inquisitor: 🌿 Arviraven ‘River’ Lavellan 🌿 (he/they);

Stats: Rift mage, scholar of the veil and arcane physicist. Nurse and First to the Keeper. Believes in the reunification of the Dales under the elves. Never claims to be chosen by Andraste. Faithful to the Elvhen Gods. Known as the ‘Herald of Hope’, ‘Vassal of Dirthamen’, and ‘Keeper of Thedas’.

Sides with the mages, supports Briala, makes Leliana Divine. Keeps the Inquisition. Formerly friends with Solas and will stop him no matter the cost. If their people had value then, they have value now.

Arviraven is well known and well connected with various Dalish clans and some city alienages. More than a First or apprentice, Arviraven was raised to be able to take on the task of the reunification of the elvhen and the reclaiming of the Dales. Cheery, cheeky, honest and nurturing, a diplomatic scholar who sees beyond the world that is today into the world that could be tomorrow.

Nonbinary bisexual. Romances Dorian and Navin Cadash (@atypicalacademic). Eldest sibling of Viera Lavellan. Used to date Merrill up until the first year after Act I, during the events of Dragon Age 2. Best friend of Cassandra, Josephine and Eravan Mahariel.

Worldstate, Side B: ‘Blood and Tradition’ - This is both the mirror to ‘What is Right’ and sometimes coexistent with it. Both worldstates should be understood, if not together, in relation to one another, and cannot be understood without the other.

Warden: 🩸 Iraya Surana 🩸 (she/her)

Stats: Mage, elven, despises being called “of Kinoch Hold”. Trans and a lesbian. Blood Mage, Arcane warrior, Keeper. Romances Morrigan and Vijaya Aeducan (@atypicalacademic). Best friends with Tatiana Amell (@atypicalacademic) and Juno Mahariel, who takes over as Warden-Commander.

Protects the circle mages, crowns Vijaya Aeducan.

‘Disappears’, eventually comes back as some make-shift Keeper to a ragtag group of lost elves. Gets Mythal Vallaslin in her 30s.

Champion: ⛈ Carlota ‘Charlie’ Hawke ⛈ (she/her)

CW: Manipulation and gaslighting from a parental figure

Stats: Mage, mixed elven (doesn’t seem it). Bisexual. Blood & force mage. Despite being known as ‘Charlie Hawke’ she is an Amell. In my worldstates, when Revka disappears she takes with her the only child who has not been discovered to be a mage yet, who in this case is Charlie. To protect her, she convinces her life as an Amell was not true, asking Charlie to refer to herself as Charlie Hawke and to tell people Revka’s name was Leandra.

Charlie doesn’t remember her father. She also features as champion in @atypicalacademic‘s worldstate ‘Hell and High Water’, making her the sibling of her Amells: Claudia, Andrea, Xavier and Tatiana. Her Carver becomes a Warden.

Known as ‘Bloody Charlie’, ‘Bloodlust Carlota’ or ‘Queen of the Maleficars’, she is a highly demonised figure out of her usage of the mage rebellion to rise to power. Romances Anders. While originally angry about Anders’ bombing of the Chantry because it interfered with her rise to power (which matters to her more than anything), she supports the rebellion and claims herself in line to be Viscountess before it starts.

Romances Anders. Enemies with Varric, Aveline, Fenris and Merrill. Her only ‘friend’ is Isabela.

Inquisitor: ⚔️ Viera Lavellan ⚔️ (he/him)

Stats: Warrior, Dalish, First Knight of Elgar’nan. Reaver. Bisexual. Believes in the reunification of the Dales under the elves. Youngest brother of Arviraven Lavellan, hobbyist jeweller.

Conscripts the Templars, allows Arviraven to pass as him in Redcliffe, though most of the mages are lost as an Inquisition force. Romances @atypicalacademic‘s Sylvaine ‘Mesmer’ Seyras. Enemies with Solas and faithful to the Elvhen, even more so than their Gods, for he is a Knight of Elgar’nan.

He believes the most in Arviraven, thinking that his eldest sibling ought to make the political decisions. Keeps the Inquisition, abdicating in favour of Arviraven.

He’s best friends with Iron Bull and loves tormenting Dorian as his in-law.

And The Lovers, Do They Dream? (Worldstate: What Is Right Over What Is Easy): A gothic romance meets magical realism retelling of the romance of Dorian Pavus and Arviraven Lavellan.

Also described as “Crimson peak with a happy ending meets Apollo throwing his pride-month-edition ball of prophecy at guy already on his way towards radicalisation.”

The Song of Dirthalath (Worldstate: What Is Right Over What Is Easy): He has had many names in history. Before he was disowned, he was Quenath’enal. Afterwards, he was known as Vir A’dirth Revas’an’dar or ‘Spymaster’. This is the song of a High-born ancient elf born into nobility, who lost everything and everyone, only to gain them again and lose them again. Over and over.

This is a story of the price of resurrection. This is the story that sings ‘Ara Ma’thalan Lethandar, Dirtalath Viradirth’, for we know of the Creator but not of what was supposed to happen to them: Dirthamen one day would rise in Elgar’nan’s place, with Abundance to his right and Will to his left. This is the story of the forsaken, should-have-been, Elvhen God of Will.

Hyssop: Do they have a god/religion they feel strongly about?

🎭 Rowan Hawke: No. Unlike some other members of her family, she has no faith in the Maker or Andraste as a prophet of the Maker. She was just a woman who did good, to her. She was the closest to Malcolm, despite not being a mage herself, and inherited all the cracks he saw in how the Andrastian faith was carried on. As it didn’t make sense to her and didn’t really help people for the most part, she chucked it aside quite young.

🌿 River Lavellan: He does! As the first to the Keeper of his clan, he has genuine faith in both the Evanuris and the different Vir of the people. His vallaslin are a merge of both Ghilan’nain and Dirthamen, in his own personal rooting of Guiding through Knowledge.

I don’t really follow Bioware’s canon about the revelations of Trespasser for a number of reasons, but I think it would translate in River as a quest to find the truth, but not a complete world shattering. Divergences of my headcanons aside, Faith is something that is deeply cultural and the stories that keep their people together tend to be a little more important to River. He is, overall, very set on the idea of taking the past they lost to plant it and see it grow, building forward and anew. What once was can never be recovered again, and the cost is something he is not willing to pay — you do not destroy the world to mourn it. You take it and you fix it, and you guide it into something new with what you once were, with the pieces that survived.

Still, his faith in the idea of the Evanuris is very strong and carries him forward. All the contact he’s ever had with Andrastians are both city elves and templars, so his first month as the Inquisitior is an exercise on itself.

I can’t remember if I posted this here or not, but this is Clara, Rowan’s sweetheart and the second main character of Book 1! She is also autistic, even though she is very affectionate with her loved ones, just like Rowan.

Clara is a Dragon Elf, which means that she can transform into a dragon when she uses a particular spell called the Shape-Shifting Breeze Spell. This spell, which can only be used by Dragon Elves, activates the dormant DNA of a Dragon Elf’s secondary form. Dragon Elves can also use the Shape-Shifting Breeze Spell to go between their secondary dragon form and their primary human form. But most Dragon Elves can only use the spell six times per day before becoming physically exhausted. Dragon Elf Mages can use the Shape-Shifting Breeze Spell ten times per day.

This is a concept for Clara’s secondary form! ^^^^^^^^ As you can see, Dragon Elves have fur in their secondary forms. That’s because they are not only warm-blooded, but they also live on the coldest planet in the Universe!

In Leytovari society, it is considered very rude for a Dragon Elf to go into their secondary form either just outside of a residence or inside a residential/commercial building. This is because an adult Dragon Elf’s secondary form can be up to 11 feet tall from head to toe, and can have a wingspan of up to 24 feet. Dragon Elf children are taught how to use the Shape-Shifting Breeze Spell when they turn 7, and tend to have it memorized by age 8. The secondary form of a Dragon Elf child can be up to 6 feet tall from head to toe, and can have a wingspan of up to 14 feet. Children are strongly discouraged from going into their secondary forms from the time they learn how to use the Shape-Shifting Breeze Spell. Children also learn that they are Mages from ages 10 to 12. If a Dragon Elf child in their secondary form takes off, and people on the ground report seeing a pale colored cloud of air forming beneath their wings as they take off, that child is noted as a Brightened Wind Mage. If a Dragon Elf child takes off, and people on the ground report a dark colored cloud of air beneath their wings as they take off, that child is noted as a Darkened Wind Mage. I’ll eventually make a more detailed post about the magic system of Fenrathae!

Dragon Elves are able to interbreed with humans, and they can have fertile offspring. This makes human-Dragon Elf hybrids the only hybrids between mortal species that can exist in the Universe of Fenrathae. As a result of this fact, human-Dragon Elf couples are the most common pairings between the four mortal species of Fenrathae, even though they aren’t as common as pairings between people of the same mortal species. Once a Dragon Elf woman becomes pregnant, she loses her ability to use the Shape-Shifting Breeze Spell throughout the pregnancy and for nine months after the baby is born.

You’re probably asking who Razakia is. Razakia is the Sacred Keeper of Leytovar’s Light and the Goddess of the Brightened Wind. Clara is Razakia’s Sacred Vessel, meaning that she is Razakia reborn. Razakia never actually died, but she and Teldorrek, the Sacred Keeper of Leytovar’s Darkness and the God of the Darkened Wind, had to leave their planet after certain spoilery events for eight centuries. Their power has not waned because they do not depend on the faith of their people for their power, as Razakia and Teldorrek were once able to walk among the Dragon Elves in the form of those people.

Brother: Rodney Chung

Eight years older than Emmett, Rodney doesn’t know his younger brother as much as he would want to. The only memory he had of Emmett was that he was almost fatally shot when he was only 5--by someone armed with a gun and his head hidden with a wide-brimmed hat. He ended up going absolute berserk and detached himself from his family the moment he stepped into school.

Background/History:

Emmett’s childhood was very black and white--loved to bits by his mother and father, but constantly living in his brother’s shadow with the only wish that he got to know his brother more and why he was acting so distant. When he was 5, the family was ambushed by a group of Muggles belonging to a Mafia group, the claim being that his father owed them a huge sum of money for ‘breaking a deal’. Enraged, Emmett’s father tried to drive them away, but the group did not leave quietly--they raised hell in the home, shooting multiple bullets and wrecking a lot of things. One of the bullets entered Emmett’s body, striking him in the collarbone and narrowly missing his heart. It was Rodney who drove them away in the end with a stash of dungbombs--and eventually the family had to move to a private estate in Cambridge, living in fear. Emmett was sent away to a hospital to recover from both his wound and the trauma.

(The Mafia group in question was actually Emmett’s father’s ‘friends’--the deal was that as long as he was friends with them, he would not find himself someone to marry. He had no idea that they intended to end his family line, and got married in secret anyway.)

Rodney disappeared two years before Emmett began his journey at Hogwarts. While the rest of the family worried for him, Emmett resented his brother’s decisions. Even if he wanted to bring Rodney back home, he knew he had a lot to owe the family.

Hogwarts Mystery unfolded.

Once Wallace’s case was cleared up, Emmett began to leave home more often, not just for his job at the Ministry (and he did love working in the same place as his mother, don’t get me wrong) but for hanging out more with his friends. He became less and less closed up, and eventually found a place to live on his own, though he always paid his parents and Rodney a visit just to hear Rodney’s full story and to try and mend the broken bond between them.

Emmett joined the Order of the Phoenix as a spy in early 1996.

In May 1998, Emmett joined the Battle of Hogwarts, but he did not survive. He was killed by a heavy pillar pinning him to the ground while running through the corridors. He was honoured alongside all the rest of the fallen, survived by his brother who already had a family of his own.

Personality:

Is it appropriate to say that Emmett has trust issues? Other than his parents, whom he cared for deeply, Emmett had a hard time opening up to new people. Rowan was the first to break through that shell, though, showing him that not all people are as disloyal as he had been led to believe. Sometimes he still retains some venom which he doesn’t hesitate to spit out in his retorts--some people had to help him monitor that. He speaks with no filter, preferring to be blunt and straightforward with his opinions and preferences. Despite his bully-like attitude, however, he’s very studious and works hard. His ambition laid in getting justice for his father.

Misc:

Emmett’s a popular boy with the girls at school--first pointed out by Penny, whom he once had a small crush on despite their polar opposites. However, he couldn’t stand being an object for girls to ogle at, and at one point he snapped at one of the girls for staring starry-eyed at him.

Very few people knew about Emmett’s scar. Only his dorm mates knew, and once he was comfortable enough with his friends they would know of it too.

In general though, I think...

Niamh Amell is my canon Warden, but she shares the title of Hero of the Fifth Blight with Therasenn Mahariel, who was recruited fairly late in the game. Cattilara Tabris is Senior-Warden, a traveling recruiter but also know to be a bit of a hard-ass and reckless when it comes to injustices she finds in her travels.

Amell got the Commander of the Grey and Arlessa title because Thedas is racist she’d been a Warden longer, but she immediately promoted Therasenn Mahariel to Constable of the Grey and gave her specific command of Soldier’s Peak because she wanted a non-Mage (and a non-Andrastian with a different perspective of Magic) to keep an eye on the research there.

Therasenn is acting Commander of the Grey while Amell is traveling outside of Fereldan borders, and during DA:I gives Nathaniel the order to pull all Fereldan Wardens back to Amaranthine or Soldier’s Peak, depending on their job title.

Meanwhile Cattilara Tabris escaped Vaughan Kendells and was basically an outlaw who certain friends hid and refused to turn in.

Originally she was sent to hide in Highever, but returned near the end of the game when she heard about the “plague”.

She was investigating the Tevinter “healers” in the alienage long before Amell got there and taking direct action. Sometime after the end of the game, she’s finally caught and Niamh recruits her to spare her the noose and to prevent any excuse for Nobles to strike at the new Bann Shianni.

She is not happy about it, but by the time of DA:I she’s made uneasy friends with Amell. As Senior Warden, she will openly break the “No Wardens in politics” rule to protect Bann Shianni.

She’s one of the only ones Mahariel will let out to fight the demons from Fereldan rifts, at least until Amell formally requests her secondment to the Inquisition. She fights with Solas. A lot. She’s also Adaar’s girlfriend.

Rowan Hawke is still on her own; sorry Rowan.

Evanna Trevelyan is my Inquisitor. Originally a Harrowed Enchanter at Ostwick, thought she had tentative connections to the Mage’s Collective even then. Became a full member when her Circle fell, and was there on their behalf, not Ostwick’s.

She’s very good at playing the faithful, sweet, cautious mage, and to some extent she’s even been brainwashed into it, but the full force of the Chantry’s misdeeds hits her early on when she realizes she’s strengthening the Chantry position and it actually dramatically harms her mental health/sense of worth. Loses her faith entirely after Wicked Eyes, prior to Here Lies the Abyss.

Whereas Mahvirehn, First of Clan Lavellan is sent as a diplomat/spy when it comes out that the new leader of the Inquisition is not only a mage but possibly sympathetic to the Dalish. He and Evanna hit it off very quickly. She often seeks his council not only on how to proceed on matters involving the Dalish but also on leadership and magic. She grants him a formal spot on her inner council, and direct command over a portion of the Rebel Mages. (He falls in love with Dorian before being recalled to replace his aging Keeper following her retirement near the Exalted Council.)

Herah “Echo” Adaar is just a slightly-too-altruistic mercenary who genuinely ends up with the Inquisition because she wants people to stop dying in the claws of demons. It’s a very rough start because no one trusts her, but she catches Evanna’s eye when some kind of incident goes down and she steps between three ex-Templars and an terrified elven mage. Eventually befriends Evanna, helps her fight off an assassination attempt or two, and is given an informal position keeping an eye on corruption or injustice within the ranks of the Inquisition itself, reporting directly to the Inquisitor on things Trevelyan doesn’t get to see for herself. Eventually given the formal but vague title of “Knight-Protector”, and paired with Cattilara Tabris (her future girlfriend) who does the same for the Inquisitor’s Wardens.

When Maya realised what had happened, she ran to Rowan, who was still recovering in bed.

“May what’s wrong?”

“It’s Kenna, and Willow, and Oce... He’s got them all!” She slumped onto the bed next to Rowan, who pulled her into a hug as she sobbed. “I don’t know what to do Ro. What if Kenna never gets over it this time! You saw how long it took her last time, and what they did to her, I don’t know if she would be able to take that again, especially with the others there as well. I don’t know what I would do if... If she di—” Before she could finish she broke down into violent sobs, shaking both her and Rowan’s bodies.

“Hey, hey, it’s gonna be okay, you’ve got to know that it’s going to be okay. Kenna’s tough, and you need to be here for her when she gets back.” They rubbed her back, allowing her to sob openly. “But you being all down won’t help anything, you’ve got to have faith that Jack, Marvin and Jamie know what they’re doing and will get them back before anything bad happens to them.”

Rowan didn’t know how wrong they were.

Jamie arrived home a few hours later with Kenna, Oce, Willow and Ash. Both Oce and Kenna looked terrified, whereas Willow looked mostly indifferent, but seeing the trace of remaining fear that she wore froze Maya’s heart; it took a lot to scare Willow, and Kenna couldn’t cope with a lot.

“Kenna, babe?” Maya ran down towards her, pulling her into a hug, but she felt nothing in return. Holding Kenna’s shoulders, she looked at her face. “Babe, are you hurt? What’s wrong? Are you okay? Please be okay!” Frantically, Maya searched her up and down for any signs of physical injuries, but apart from the stains of blood on her hand, there was nothing.

Looking back at her face properly, Maya noticed how empty Kenna looked, the same as when she had come back only three weeks ago. “Kenna, do you know who I am?” Fear braided into Maya’s brow as she scanned the three remaining people after Jamie had taken the unconscious Ash up to bed. Willow looked pityingly at the clueless Maya, whereas Oce just lowered her head to the floor.

“Guys, what’s happening? What happened?” Maya pleaded, she needed to know Kenna and they were okay.

“He... he used me.” Oce barely spoke, but the words she did terrified Maya as Oce ran up the stairs. Willow gave an apologetic look to Maya and Kenna before running after her.

“Kenna? Kenna please, come and sit down with me. Please, we were having our date, remember, our special day?” As selfish as it was, all Maya wanted was Kenna to herself. So, she guided Kenna to their room and together they sat in silence.

By the time Maya had realised what the portal was, Kenna was already where it had come from. She followed swiftly, waiting at the door when she saw Henrik and Chase in the room. Kenna was sprawled on top of Chase, and when Marvin tried to pull her away Maya could barely stop herself from intervening.

But this wasn’t her family. That was her girlfriend, who needed time alone to fix her broken family.

She didn’t see Kenna for two weeks after everything happened. Every night she hoped Ash and Marvin would bring her home from the hospital, but they never did. The bed felt overly large and cold without Kenna, and Maya had started sleeping with the teddy bear she had won or Kenna the day it happened. The smell of bowling alley and Kenna helped her imagine that they were falling asleep together that night, tangled together.

Eight days after everyone had come home, Kenna still hadn’t left the hospital, and the smell of her bear had finally been overpowered by the smell of her. When she buried her nose into its fur to smell nothing but herself, she threw it across the room in frustration. All she wanted was to give Kenna a hug.

Another day later Maya was considering every way she could get Kenna back.

On the tenth day, Maya couldn’t take it anymore. Willow had accompanied Rowan out to get groceries, taking over care of the house after they had recovered. Oce, Ash, Marvin, Jamie, Jack and Henrik (who was finally in good enough health to leave the house) had gone out to see Chase, and Maya had the house to herself. Everything felt numb, and she remembered that Oce said cigarettes helped her when she worried about Kenna. Maybe that was all she needed, something to calm her nerves a little and help her relax. She hurried through to Oce’s room, unsure when Rowan and Willow would be back. Carefully searching everywhere, she finally found an almost full packet of cigarettes hidden under Oce’s mattress.

Hands shaking, she took the box and a single cigarette out before stuffing the box into her pockets. Oce wouldn’t notice that it had gone missing: she had stopped smoking after Kenna had come home the first time, and she even said she couldn’t stomach them anymore since she got her magic. Still she felt kind of bad for stealing them, until she remembered that Wilford had given them to her, and he probably stole them himself. Before she left Oce’s room, she grabbed the lighter that had been with them and ran back to her room.

She knew she couldn’t smoke inside, if Kenna came home, she would smell it and she had enough problems already. So, to keep Rowan and Willow from worrying, she left a note on the table saying she had gone for a walk to clear her head and left through the back door.

As soon as she was outside, she lifted one to her lips and lit it, inhaling the toxic fumes deeply. She coughed a few times, unused to the dense smoke filling her lungs, before she exhaled it again. Quickly, eager to have the warmth burn her lungs again, she inhaled once more. In and out, in and out until it burnt at her fingers and her lips. She looked around, only then realising where she had walked to. Looking up at the tall building, thought of the hot end nipping at her fingertips.

Feeling completely empty, she put it back between her lips a final time, trying to drag the last remnants of toxins into her body as she rolled up her sleeve. Eyeing the impending building one final time, she drove the butt into her exposed arm, the skin searing and flesh burning beneath it. She pushed it in as hard as she could, watching the ash drift to the floor as the smell of burnt meat filled her nose and the street around her. Huge tears were rolling down her face, not from the pain but from the fact she had only just promised Kenna she wouldn’t go back there again. But she had, and she knew she would again before everything was back to normal.

So, she walked a bit more, this time ending up at the busy bridge that crossed the river. She knew it was this bridge where Blank tried to make Oce kill herself, and she half hoped that Dark would show up for her as well, to push her off instead of pull her back. Clambering over the railings, she sat with her legs dangling over the eighty foot drop. Once again her hands were shaking as she extinguished the butt on her arm, in a perfect line from the other one. She had been out for a few hours and here was slowly gathering a perfect straight line down her left forearm to represent her pain. One for everyday Kenna wouldn’t see her. This was the ninth, one more and then she would go back home. It was dark again now, and despite the road still being busy, Maya felt completely alone.

“Miss?” A voice behind her broke her away from her mind, and almost made her jump if she wasn’t so close to apathy. “Miss, are you alright?” Slowly, she turned around and clambered back onto the pavement on the bridge.

“Yeah, I just needed to think.” She smiled wryly at the man before turning to sit back on the bridge edge.

“It’s just people don’t normally think on the edge of an eighty foot drop whilst burning themselves with cigarettes.”

He clambered next to her, and as a lorry went past and illuminated him, she saw his pink hair and his moustache.

“Wilford.”

“Yep, that’s me.” They sat in silence together for a few minutes. “You know, when I need to think, I usually find a bit of alcohol helps.” He pulls a bottle out of nowhere and uncorks the lid before taking a swig and handing it to Maya. “Here ya go.”

“Thanks Wilford.” She took the bottle from him and drank tentatively, the alcohol burning her throat as she swallowed it. It was heavy in her hand and she kept hold of it before she took another, much larger, swig.

“And er, do ya have any of those smokes left? I know they were Scamp’s, but I er, wouldn’t mind having one myself.”

“Yeah, I think so,” Pulling the box out of her hoodie pocket, she flipped the lid open to see four left. She tilted the box towards Wilford and he took one. “Wilford...”

“Yeah?”

“Would you maybe... y’know... be able to get me... some more?” Wilford turned to her with a goofy grin.

“Why of course I can! Ya should know I’ll do anything to make you youngsters happy, especially when you can’t do it yourself!”

“Thanks Wilford.” Maya tentatively leaned onto his shoulder, craving comfort and warmth as they sat so high in the air. In return he patted her shoulder and let her rest there until he finished his cigarette.

“You want it?” Careful so as to not burn his own fingers, he offered Maya the glowing butt, and she took it, once again searing her arm. That made ten: one for every day Kenna had refused to come home to see her. Once it had burnt out completely, Maya threw it into the abyss below them, and swung back onto the safe side of the bridge.

“Hey Wilford?”

“Yeah kid?”

“Would you be able to save me if I fell?”

“Why I’m almost certain I could. Why do you ask?”

“I fell like being reckless.” Without another word, she jumped up onto the side of the bridge where they had just been sitting and started walking.

“What? Where are you going?” Wilford caught up to her, and continued to walk alongside her, ready to catch her if she fell.

“To go insane.”

Hubert Church 66

Mr. Hubert Ray Church age 66 of Purlear, passed away, Friday, December 6, 2019 at his home.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM, Thursday, December 12, 2019 at Yellow Hill Baptist Church with Rev. Sherrill Welborn, Rev. Kenny Newberry and Pastor Brady Hayworth officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 Wednesday evening at Reins Sturdivant Funeral Home.

Mr. Church was born September 1, 1953 in Wilkes County to Paige and Agnas Fletcher Church. He was a retired Truck Driver for DOT and a member of Yellow Hill Baptist Church. Hurbert loved to make people laugh.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brother; Ronnie Church.

Mr. Church is survived by his wife; Joan Rhymer Church of the home, a daughter; Patricia Church of Deep Gap, a son; Darin Church of Deep Gap, two grandchildren; Tyler Church and Samantha Church, a sister; Linda Steelman and husband Eddie of Deep Gap and a brother: Bruce Church and wife LouAnn of Deep Gap.

Marilyn Hunter, 74

Marilyn Francis Key Hunter, age 74, of North Wilkesboro, passed away Friday, December 6, 2019 at Wake Forest Baptist Health-Wilkes Regional. Ms. Hunter was born December 5, 1945 in Wilkes County to Vernon Edward and E. Faye Elledge Key. Ms. Hunter was a member of Bethel Baptist Church in the Mtn. View Community. She was of the Baptist Faith, attended His Light Ministries and enjoyed services at Villages of Wilkes. Marilyn was a loving, sweet and kind person. She loved animals, cats and dogs. She enjoyed watching birds, especially hummingbirds when they were eating. Ms. Hunter was preceded in death by her parents; infant sister, Barbara Jean Key, sister, Arlene Key Niston, Margaret Ann Byrd; brother, Kenneth David Key; brother-in-law's, John Willard Niston, Ronnie J. Pruitt; and nephews, Russell Hawkins and Daniel Byrd.

Surviving are her brother, Vaughn Key and spouse Incha of North Wilkesboro; sisters, Irene Blevins and spouse Hubert of Wilkesboro, Janice Hawkins and spouse Steve of Hays, Rita Pruitt of North Wilkesboro; many loving nieces and nephews.

Funeral service was December 9, at Miller Funeral Chapel with Rev. Darrell Poole and Rev. Michael Brinegar officiating. Burial followed in Scenic Memorial Gardens.

Margaret Richardson, 73

Margaret Porter Richardson, age 73, of Wilkesboro, passed away peacefully into the arms of the Lord, on Friday, December 6, 2019 at her home. Margaret was born November 26, 1946 in Wilkes County to Granville and Lillian Dowell Porter. She worked at Villages of Wilkes for the past 11 years. She loved her residents very much. She loved taking them out to eat, painting fingernails and helping in any way she could to bring joy to their lives. Margaret loved fishing, she made many friends on the fishing pier in Myrtle Beach, where we are sure she will be missed by all who knew her. Margaret also loved working along side her husband, Jim in the garden. Mrs. Richardson was preceded in death by her parents; and husband who died in 1987, Gary Lee Billings.

Surviving are her loving husband, James (Jim) Richardson; sons, Russell Billings and spouse Pam of Traphill, David Billings and Michele Riddle of Purlear; sisters, Reba Johnson and spouse Claude of North Wilkesboro, Nancy Reavis and spouse Jerry of Rock Creek, Betty Ferguson and spouse Wayne of North Wilkesboro; grandsons, Justin Billings and Russell Billings.

Funeral service was December 8, at Davis Memorial Baptist Church with Rev. Hadley Triplett officiating. Burial followed in Mountlawn Memorial Park. Anne Kite, 102

Mrs. Anne Dulce Goode Kite, age 102 of Millers Creek, passed away Thursday, December 5, 2019 at her home.

Memorial services will be held 11:00 am Thursday, December 12, 2019 at North Wilkesboro Presbyterian Church with Rev. R.C. Griffin and Rev. Steve Snipes officiating. A reception will follow in the church fellowship hall. Private family burial services will be held.

Mrs. Kite was born May 14, 1917 in Martinsville, VA, to the late John Letcher Goode and Lucy Davis Goode Draper. She was a member of North Wilkesboro Presbyterian Church and Vanguard Class. She had been the keeper of the Cradle Roll for over 25 years. Mrs. Kite was a charter member of Wilkes Regional Hospital Auxiliary and also a member of the Friday Book Club. She loved the Blue Ridge Parkway, butterflies and welcoming guests to the Dodge House Restaurant. She was a great cook and well known for her pies.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband: Robert Francis Kite, two brothers: Ray Goode and John L. Goode and a son in law: David Eller.

She is survived by two daughters: Susan Kite Eller of Greenville, SC and Betsey Kite O'Neill and husband Jack of Virginia Beach VA, five grandchildren: Cynthia Booke, Mark Eller, Robert Eller, John O'Neill and Kelly Ogle and ten great grandchildren: David and Lauren Booke, Samantha and Sydney Eller, Archie, Trevor, Ben O'Neill, Cameron and Connor Eller and Lucy and Avery Ogle.

William Grimstead, 65

Mr. William Michael Grimstead, age 65 of Cornelius, passed away Wednesday, December 4, 2019 at his home.

Funeral services were December 10, at Reins Sturdivant Chapel with Pastor Robert Duncan and Rev. Eddie Tharpe officiating. Burial was in Scenic Memorial Gardens. Mr. Grimstead was born May 18, 1954 in Boone, North Carolina to Donald Ray and Shirley Payne Grimstead. He was a Longtime Professional Airline Pilot. Mike graduated from Wilkes Central High School and Florida Institute of Technology Aviation Program. He was a flight instructor, ground instructor. glider pilot, seaplane pilot and corporate pilot. He retired from American Airlines as an Airline Pilot. Mr. Grimstead was a member of Oakwood's Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Mr. Grimstead is survived by his wife; Sherree Grimstead and two cousins; Susan Clements and husband James of Bartow, FL and Cindy Hudson and husband Rick of Hickory.

Margaret Dotson, 85

Mrs. Margaret Hayes Dotson, age 85 of Wilkes County passed away Wednesday, December 4, 2019 at Memory Care of the Triad.

Funeral services were December 7, at Reins-Sturdivant Chapel. Burial was in Lewis Baptist Church Cemetery. Mrs. Dotson was born July 29, 1934 in Wilkes County to Robert Doughton and Gena Souther Hayes. She was a care giver for all of her family, an avid reader and loved the outdoors. She retired from Thomasville Furniture in the cabinet department.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

She is survived by two daughters; Wanda Dotson, Dino of Bluffton, SC and Donna Wicker, Bruce of Reidsville, three grandchildren; Courtney Jansen and husband Stephen, Logan Nichols and Hayden Wicker, two great grandchildren; Porter Jansen and Hadley Jansen, four sisters; Sylvia Boles of Winston-Salem, Joan Dotson of North Wilkesboro, Jane Brooks of Salisbury, Jewel "Judy" Sheppard of Mt. Stephen Vannoy, 73

Mr. Stephen (Steve) DeLane Vannoy, 73, of Carthage, passed away on Wednesday December 4, 2019 at Moore Regional Hospital.

Steve was born on Monday July 8, 1946 in Rowan County to Swan Aline Vannoy.

Steve is preceded in death by his mother and step father Don Royal.

Steven is survived by daughters, Stephanie Vannoy of Millers Creek, Elizabeth Vannoy of Candar, NC; son, Chal Vannoy and wife, Tammy of Wilkesboro; sister, Faye Royal and husband, Jerry also of Millers Creek; 6 grandchildren, Corey, Hannah Johnson, Clint, Cody Roten, Zylania ,MaFia Green; 3 great grand children, Delacey, Terence Hamilton, Caroline Roten; special niece, Melissa Shoemaker; special great niece, Nicole Huffman,

John Caudill, 65

Mr. John "Tom" Thomas Caudill, 65, of Advance passed away Wednesday, December 4, 2019.

He was born in Wilkes County on August 19, 1954, to John Alvin and Libby Walsh Caudill. Tom was a member of Pinedale Christian Church for the past thirty-one years. He received his MBA from Appalachian State University. Tom owned and operated Auto Financial of NC until his retirement. He was an avid train enthusiast, traveler, and enjoyed doing things for other people without their knowledge. Tom was an Eagle Scout and avid outdoorsman. Following in his father's footsteps, he loved to hike and explore the Blue Ridge Mountains. He ran many marathons and achieved his goal of running a sub - three hour race on his last attempt. Tom was Gloria's Superman.

Preceding him in death is his mother and a brother, Alex Caudill. Left to cherish his memory is his loving and skinny wife, Gloria F. Caudill; son, Jonathan Caudill and Tyler of Washington, D.C.; father, John Alvin Caudill and wife Frances of North Wilkesboro; a brother, Charles Caudill of Wilkesboro; and his beloved birds.

A memorial service was held 2:00 PM Saturday, December 7, 2019, at Pinedale Christian Church, officiated by Ministers Bill McKenzie and Matthew Sink.

Cynthia Shipton,74

Mrs. Cynthia Reeves Shipton, age 74 of North Wilkesboro passed away Tuesday, December 3, 2019 at Wake Forest Baptist-Wilkes Medical Center.

Ronald Hamby, 70

Mr. Ronald "Ron" Lee Hamby, age 70 of Purlear passed away Tuesday, December 3, 2019 at his home.

Funeral services were December 5, at Millers Creek Baptist Church with Rev. Shannon Critcher and Rev. Phillip Boyce officiating. Burial was in Stony Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mr. Hamby was born January 8, 1949 in Wilkes County to Woodrow Wilson and Vergie Mae Powell Hamby. He was a member of Millers Creek Baptist Church and a member of the Slant 6 Racing Club.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a sister; Diane Hamby.

He is survived by Kay Bare Hamby of the home, three sons; Christopher Dale Hamby and wife Debbie of Liberty, Ronald Eric Hamby and wife Deanna of Orlando, FL and David Lee Hamby and wife Charlene of Palmetto, FL and special daughter-in-law: Tracy Hamby, three grandchildren; Christopher Thomas Hamby, Parker Wilson Hamby, Carley Lynne Hamby and two step-grandchildren; Jaden Hamby and Peyten Hamby, special extended family; Lori Bledsoe, Ivy Bledsoe, Iris Bledsoe, Ginger Hamby, Jacob Hamby, Anna Hamby and Julie Hamby.

Lura Grimes, 95

Miss Lura Mae Grimes, age 95 of Wilkesboro, passed away Monday, December 2, 2019 at her home.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Sunday, December 8, 2019, at Rickards Chapel with Rev. Richard Watts, Bishop George Morgan and Rev. Keith D. Knox, Sr. officiating. Burial was in Rickards Chapel Cemetery.

Miss Grimes was born August 22, 1924 in Wilkes County to Fred Vernon and Ethel Vyra Barber Grimes. She retired as a Telephone Operator with NY Bell (AT&T), having worked from the 1940s until the 1970s. She was a member of Rickards Chapel and the Mother of the church. Lura was an active member of the Roots of Love and was very involved in the Lincoln Heights Community. She was a local history enthusiast, loved to travel and was just a phenomenal person with a sharp mind as well as the matriarch of her family.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters; Mary Louise Anderson, Violet Mackay and Vera Jane Grimes, four brothers; Grover Columbus Grimes, Glenn Alvin Grimes, Fred Earl Grimes and Everett Lee Grimes.

She is survived by two sisters; Reba Williams of Queens, NY and Elizabeth W. Hubbard of Buffalo NY and a host of other relatives and friends.

Thomas Hampton, 64

Thomas Odell Hampton, age 64, of Roaring River, passed away Monday, December 2, 2019 at Wake Forest Baptist Health-Wilkes Regional. He was born January 29, 1955 in Surry County to Cornelius and Willie Parker Hampton. Mr. Hampton was a member of Mt. Valley Missionary Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Olga Sales Hampton; brothers, William Parker, James Hampton, McNeil Hampton; and sister, Mary Redman.

Surviving are his son, Scott Satterwhite and spouse Barbara of Hudson; daughter, Tina Lineberger and spouse Ruben of Roaring River; siblings, Luthedia Jones, Worth Hampton and spouse Angela all of North Wilkesboro, Sally Scales of Jonesville, Ronnie Hampton, Jennie Wilborn and spouse Timmy, Sylvia Hernandez and spouse Filemon all of Roaring River; grandchildren, Izaiah Carlton, Jaylin Richardson, Dalton Stepps, Dathan Holsclaw, LaShae Holsclaw, Sovereign Satterwhite, Christian Satterwhite, Quincy Lineberger, Keyonta Lineberger several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service was December 6, at Mt. Valley Missionary Baptist Church in Roaring River with Rev. Casey Walker, Rev. Calvin Bryant, Bishop Ruben Lineberger and Rev. Ernest Martin officiating. Gary Hamby 70

Mr. Gary Van Hamby age 70 of Millers Creek, passed away Monday, December 2, 2019.

Funeral services were December 7, at Calvary Baptist Church with Pastor Mark J. Hall and Pastor Steve Laws officiating. Burial with Military Honors by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1142 was in the church cemetery.

Mr. Hamby was born January 11, 1949 in Wilkes County to Edgar Jones Hamby, Jr and wife Brona Rae Staley Hamby. Gary served in the US Army during the Vietnam Conflict from 69-70, where he reached the rank of E5 Sergeant. He retired from Holly Farms/Tyson Foods as Plant Superintendent with 37 years of service and was the owner of Hamby Auto Broker. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. Gary was a devoted Husband, Daddy, (Best Friend) and Pa.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother; Ronnie Hamby.

Mr. Hamby is survived by his wife of 50 plus years; Judy Kay Minton Hamby of the home, a son; Chad Van Hamby and wife Amanda of Wilkesboro, two granddaughters; Ella Grace Hamby and Addison Layne Hamby, three brothers; Rayvon Hamby of Millers Creek, Kevin Hamby and wife Kathy of Millers Creek and Steve Hamby and wife Geraldine of Statesville and "good friend' Larry Dale Ross.

Richard Greene 64

Mr. Richard Edward Greene age 64 of Wilkesboro, passed away in Mt. Airy.

Private family services will be held. Burial will be in the Barnes Family Cemetery in Churchland, North Carolina.

Mr. Greene was born August 22, 1955 in Charlotte, North Carolina to Edward Franklin Greene and Frances Curlee Greene. He was a member of Community Baptist Church.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a sister; Katherine Ann Greene.

He is survived by his mother; Frances Curlee Greene of North Wilkesboro, a brother; Stephen Greene and wife Vanya of Wilkesboro, a niece; Lindsay Greene of Raleigh and three nephews; Matthew Greene of Sarasota FL, Trevor Greene of Wilkesboro and Trenton Greene of Wilkesboro.
