i feel like kakashi was haunted by haku’s death. i’m pretty sure he lost sleep the days, weeks, months after the incident because there’s no way haku’s death didn’t remind him of rin’s.

they both died at a similar age (rin 13-14, haku 15). they both chose to die to protect the people they cared for. they both decided to die by jumping straight into kakashi’s lightening blade. you can argue that both kids had no regret with their decision.

i can totally picture kakashi visiting the memorial stone after the land of waves mission, profusely apologizing to rin, to obito. maybe even apologizing to minato because he couldn’t uphold his symbol of peace, blaming himself for (accidentally) killing another child. another child among many who was exploited and a fallen victim to a corrupt nation.

i just think that kakashi’s mind must have been so loud and noisy with unwanted thoughts. had he still been in anbu, he would’ve gone on those crazy suicidal missions to drown out the noise.

i wish shittymoto would give us a kakashi spin off that focuses on kakashi, not just some filler episodes. he’s such a complex yet simple character that so many of us relate to him.

Imagine Neji and Naruto if the invasion still happens. They would lose their shit. Like are you kidding me? We just died countless times reliving the same traumatic experience and brutally killing the people responsible yet you interrupt our down time with this bs? Be gone thots!

During the loops, do you think Naruto and Neji would be able to kill Orochimaru? As in kill him dead, not just his usual near death exp he manages to come back from? Because I imagine that if they do, it would still take them more loops to discover the cause of everything and locate the guy doing it. Which would mean they have to kill Orochi many many times before it’s over with.

I also think it would be an interesting shift in dynamics for the boys to originally start off trying to avoid confrontation with Orochimaru by running away and pushing their teams to go faster and faster. But in the later loops, when they manage to turn fighting into both a reflex and an art form, Orochimaru would probably be the one to start trying to flee once he realizes the fights are skewed in their favor and not his.

Oh the minute Neji felt the first hint of the genjutsu he would fucking shatter it, wake Naruto up, and both of them would be kicking the ever loving shit out of the enemy nin with extreme prejudice. They are, perhaps, not on Jonin level yet in terms of like strategy or whatever but power wise? They are on the same level if not better than the Jonin on both sides of the fight and far beyond where they were a few days ago to everyone else.

Also they are beyond pissed which makes it even more terrifying when Naruto slips into Jinchuriki form and starts wrecking the enemies without hesitation.

(Guy and Kakashi have a moment to curse the Hokage for putting off the debrief when there was something so obviously wrong with their kids. And now? Now they are slicing through enemies twice their age and supposed powerlevel with ANBU level efficiency and the kid of fury that only comes from watching your loved ones die over and over again)

Poor Gaara is really going to get a concussion this time around as Naruto casually stomps both him and the one tail into the fucking dirt okay.

I don’t know if they would kill kill orochimaru but there would definitely be a point where they flip from “fuck fuck we gotta go we gotta run we gotta save everyone” to planting their feet and roaring against the death snapping at their heels. Because they’ve tried. They’ve seen each other die. Seen their friends die. Have been painted in blood up to the elbows as they begged each other not to leave them alone again. Not to make them have to start over again.

So at a point they turn and they fight.

It’s not a quick improvement. They still die. Still watch the others who don’t know die. Still see that bastard’s laughing face before they wake up outside the gates again. But slowly, try after try, death after death, they put Orochimaru on the back foot. Then start forcing him to give ground. Then start to win. By the end they have kicking the shit out do him and the sound nin, even finding the damn scrolls that would ensure that they never have to be in this damn forest again becomes routine, and the hunt for the person who is causing all of this truly begins.

By the time the invasion starts Orochimaru is keeping a wide berth between him and those two demon children and their rage that could end worlds if they dared.

Tsunade: Enter. Kks: Mornin’. Tsunade: Kakashi. I got your message. So, Gai made it out of the coma, huh. I’ll go see how his condition is when I’m done here. Kks: I’m sure he’ll love that, but that’s not why I’m here. Tsunade: Are you looking for work? I can assign you-. Kks: More of a discussion. About the hokage thing.

Tsunade: Are you finallt giving me an answer? Kks: Yup. I’m saying no. I’m not interested. However, if there is truly no one else, I have a compromise if you’re interested.

Tsunade:It’d better be a good deal, brat. The council won’t be happy with this. You were about to accept months ago. Why say no now? Kks: Alot’s changed since then.

Gai: Papa

[gai sighs] [window sliding]

Kks: Yo. Gai: Rival!! Happy to see you! Kks: I see you’ve had visitors

Gai: Yes! I am so lucky and moved! Especially from our students! Kks: How are you feeling? Gai: Sore. Stiff. But much better than this morning. [kks hums] Kks: Sorry I took so long. Got caught up. I knew you’d be flooded with visitors. So, I stayed out of the way. Gai: Pretty cool response per usual. Kks: I think you’re pretty cool

Kks: How long are you stuck here? Did they say? Gai: A few weeks. Most of it depends on the physical therapy progress. My chakra network is fried. It’ll be slow to heal if at all. They’ve never treated my condition before, so the doctors are not sure what’ll happen

Kks: Did Tenten tell you about her plans? Kankuro even offered his experience building a prosthetic. Gai: Yes. She was very excited. Kks: /You/ don’t seem as enthused. What’s bugging you? you’re usually delighted by your team’s passion or whatever. Gai: I am truly touched because I know she’ll give it her all, but...

Gai: It won’t make a difference. Kks: What did the doctor say? Gai: Even if I can stand or walk, I’ll have lasting damage and pain. I’ll need a wheelchair the rest of my life. My time as an active duty shinobi is done.

Kks: You’ll get through this. Gai: What am I going to do, ‘Kashi? Kks: You’re stubborn enough. I’m sure you’ll find a way to prove them wrong. Like walking on your hands or something. You’ll be a menace in a wheelchair in no- Gai: I do not want you or my students burdened by my injury

Kks: That’s what you’re worried about? You think mourning you would have been any easier on anyone? You’re more to them than just a teacher. If you could have Dai back right now, wouldn’t you want that? Gai: Of course I would. Kks: Then see it from their perspectives. Don’t just lie down and accept this is how your life ends. That’s not how Dai raised you.

Kks: This is terrifying to deal with, Gai, It’s ok to feel overwhelmed. But please don’t give up. I won’t let you. Gai: I was prepared to die Kks: ...I’ve understood wanting to be dead for a long time. I get it. Gai: I do not regretn my decision at all. Regardless, I’ve hurt you the most. I know you’re angry.

Kks: I won’t lie to you. I am angry. Extremely. But I’ve wasted so much time pushing you away already. I don’t want to waste anymore time we have left. The only consistent thing in my life has always been you. I’ve said horrible things to you, and you never abandoned me. I think all the time about how I would have turned out if you didn’t keep me human. Self sacrifice seems to be something we have in common. Neither of us were meant to be without the other apparently... We’ve both been brought back from death. So maybe it’s...

after being broken down by so many people she cares about dying, she dips and leaves behind ninja society, which has taken everything from her (including wiping out her clan)

because Tsunade is also one of the most legendary/strongest ninja alive, no one could really stop her or chain her down. It takes the conviction of a child who wants her to save the village and heal his friends to get her back to Konoha, despite the all the trauma she's endured

she's a medic with a fear of blood that overcomes that to fight her own teammate and beat his ass so Orochimaru stops killing and maiming people

she steps up to be a leader because it's what the new generation need and someone has to fix all the stuff broken by her selfish teammates and old teacher

the strongest female character both in physical strength and the strength of her writing. It's like she was written first as a character versus most of the other female characters being written first as Girl and Love Interest

Tsunade is vain and a chronic gambler and drunk, she is really brash and abrasive, she is traumatized. But she's also deeply caring, an incredibly accomplished woman, one of the smartest people/medics in the world, and a great leader

she's multi-layered. She is a woman, but her entire character isn't just Woman

*First, as a caveat and disclaimer, it’s hard to diagnose a fictional character and I am not making light of any IRL diagnoses, as OCD can be debilitating. So any and all answers are for entertainment-educational purposes only. If anyone suspects they may need additional services or therapy, please seek local professional help or if in immediate crisis, in the US, call 988*

As for your question.

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder is considered an anxiety disorder or part of the anxiety family. Kakashi does have numerous symptoms of anxiety: he has anxiety attacks; displays symptoms of social anxiety; uses a security object in Icha Icha; has self-derogatory behaviors, etc….So with that said, there is such a thing as trauma-induced OCD, in which a person can develop OCD or OC symptoms following a trauma, and Kakashi has a ton of trauma. Couple that trauma with someone who already has a genetic predisposition to anxiety and depression (his dad displayed severe anxiety and depression) and you will have someone who is at increased risk of developing trauma-induced OCD.

For OCD, you have the obsessive and/or compulsive components. For example with the handwashing there’s usually an obsession that yields distress or discomfort, (e.g., being dirty, feeling contaminated, or something to that effect) and the compulsion, or action to relieve the distress of the obsession (e.g., the handwashing to remove the contamination). So, for Kakashi, what was his obsession? He had intrusive thoughts of seeing Rin’s blood to where those intrusive thoughts became an obsession. Would his washing Rin’s blood off be seen as a compulsion? Yes. It relieved his distress associated with intrusive thoughts of seeing Rin’s blood on his hands. What was his reasoning for the handwashing? To relieve distress.

When treating OCD, one of the first things assessed is if there is a history of trauma because untreated intrusive thougts can become obsessive thoughts. So,for Kakashi, did he have intrusive thoughts �� Yes, definitely. Did the intrusive thoughts become obsessive – Yes. Now, here’s the tricky part, to be diagnosed with OCD, the person needs to have the presence of obsessional thoughts and/or compulsions, which Kakashi did have. However, the obsessions and compulsions must: 1) be time-consuming, last more than an hour a day, and 2) cause significant distress, and 3) impair work or social functioning. Does Kakashi meet this criteria? Yes, he had obsessions and compulsions. Do we know how much of his day they occupied – later we do, but more about that in a minute. Or how much his work and/social life was impaired? More about that later, as well.

If left untreated, OCD symptoms potentially last YEARS or even a lifetime. And we know how great nonexistent a mental healthcare system the shinobi world had, so Kakashi's would have been untreated. So, theoretically, if Kakashi has OCD, his symptoms would have lasted for years, into OG Naruto and into Shipudden, right? So, did his compulsions last for years? Or was it a one-time thing? More on that later. I know, so much left for later discussion, huh?

Obsessions and compulsions are often (spontaneously) replaced with new ones – it’s typically not just one and true OCD usually does not just go away on its own, just the obsessions and compulsions tend to cycle, with new ones appearing to replace the old ones, so, to outsiders, it looks like the disorder disappears. So, his handwashing may not have lasted years - that we know of. However, and a big HOWEVER, one can argue that he replaced his handwashing with visiting the graves of his loved ones for HOURS. EVERY. SINGLE. DAY and that DID, in fact, last for years and DID affect his work and social life functioning – he was HOURS late to everything because he was arguably compulsing at the gravesites/memorial stone.

Along the same line, the reasons he was at the graves - he has obsessive thoughts about being considered a "bad person," as demonstrated in the war arc when he keeps repeating that he's trash and scum and tells Obito he's right. Odds are those thoughts are always present, or preoccupy a lot of headspace and time, but he doesn't verbalize them publicly (usually only at the graves/memorial stone). That would be considered obsessive behavior.

One can potentially argue that wearing his mask in public could constitute OC behavior - as it appeared to cause marked distress to him if he was faced with removing the mask - even at an early age. Note it's not uncommon for adults with OC behavior to display OC behavior as children, but that's another answer... And yes, he doesn't wear a mask as Sukea, but he wears makeup and gets to "hide," so in essence, it's another mask.

So, all of that just to say in this very long answer, that, yes, in all likelihood, Kakashi has symptoms congruent with trauma-induced OCD with potential OC symptoms/behaviors beginning in early childhood. Or you could say that he already had OC behaviors as a kid, but trauma made it worse.
