Okay, Ascension…
Let’s discuss this. This is kind of a long ramble so bear with me.
First off, I wouldn’t say it’s bad, because it really isn’t. Is it on the same level as before? Definitely not, but think about it. It’s been an amount of YEARS since Into the Shadows, so those who’ve worked on Slugterra before aren’t going to drop what they’re doing right now to work on Ascension. Thus, with a new crew and possibly new tech involved, there’s going to be some changes.
The voice acting might take some getting used to, but I only found it off-putting for like 5 seconds. That said, I think Eli’s voice is the strongest here. His new voice actor, even with a slightly deeper voice, does pull it off. I just wish I can give this voice actor a name, because they don’t specify the roles (and just give a small ass list of names in the credits.) The weakest voice I found, however, was Locke and Load. The voice actor gave it his best, I’ll give him that, but the accent seemed…detached. I don’t care that much, since Locke and Load are usually side characters to the bigger story outside of the one or two episodes that focuses on them. They’re just my least favorite of the bunch.
The plot itself, so far, is alright. Despite the criminally short runtime (which is not their fault) how they managed to get the point across in the manner it did was actually impressive, now that I think about it. Eli and Trixie’s interactions were actually quite sweet, and not out of character for them. Locke and Load (despite horrible accents) do what they do best. However, we then come to Dr. Blakk…who is no longer physically corrupted? (I have some theories on that I’m not discussing here). Regardless, I see this as two sides of a coin. On one side, can see why people were…unsettled by this. This character, while beloved by most, has outstayed his welcome. He had his character arcs, he doesn’t need another one. That said, and this brings me to other side of the coin, this gives me some hope personally. If Dr. Blakk can come back from the Deep Caverns, then so can another character that actually deserves it: Will Shane…Will. Freaking. Shane. If any character should come back from the Deep Caverns, it should be him. (Maybe this is in relation why this is called “Ascension”.)
Now, for the art quality. It’s actually pretty phenomenal considering what they have to work with. It can get slightly awkward at times, but it’s actually pretty smooth. My only gripe is the lighting. Not all of it is bad, but for the characters themselves…they need some shadows. Does it have to be like it was before? No. Will it give a bit more definition? Absolutely. Other than that, it’s pretty strong quality.
My closing thoughts: I will miss the show how it used to be, but this doesn’t imply that Ascension should be ignored. While it has a name to live up to, they have already shown strengths. But again, we still must recognize that Ascension is being produced under different circumstances then what came before it, so things are bound to change. So, for now, let’s just see where this goes.

you literally get the most deranged dialogue from comics. jl crack fics are 100% closer to the actual comics than the dark and gritty ones.
“i guess that’s the bad guy” “good guess”
batman, suspicious: you sound like a cop

Christmas List Erased Day 17: Gingerbread Construction worker Howie! Ngl, I'd love a 3 hour audio track of Howie detailing how to build a gingerbread house, cycling between citing baking steps like safety laws and yelling at people off-screen.
Like I'd prolly pay money for Justice saying things like:
"Alright, now that everyone has there necessary safety equipment, each of you are gonna have to follow my orders explicitly. We ran out of all the white frosting after that stinkin' kid ran in her and drank it all, so we're only left with yellow. Now I know in that context this may be seen as humorous, but we're being paid to build, not laugh. Trixie, your gonna hand me building materials as I plaster the walls together. Molly, I need you to make sure everything is level, because if even a crumb is outta place then this all might come out of our materials budget. Pheonica, you shoul- ..... a... are you EATIN' all our SUPPORT BEAMS?!?....... Trixie, I'm going to need a few drainage rocks"
Trixie: "Your mean the Coco puffs or the Fruity pebbles?"
Howie: "Hand me the PEBBLES"

'Undercover' Slugterra comic.
-
The first few weeks for Sarai going undercover at Blakk Industries were rough. Being away from her brother, Eli Shane, only to keep a safe profile was making her homesick and it doesn’t help that she’s known as a newbie.
So when Sarai overheard her mentor, Elyssa Moon, was managing the Shane gang’s infiltration, of course she wanted in (I could imagine she misses Eli and just wanted to see him).
Eli is aware on Sarai’s whereabouts at the time but never really acknowledged it. As much as Elyssa is irritated that her work shifts are back to back, she does tries her best to mentor Sarai. Now conflicted, Elyssa isn’t sure what to do if things go south, cause she has a clue on Sarai’s actions but isn’t quite sure why just yet. She can only for now, keep a close eye on her.
- Art trade with the marvellous @ariaterramoon!! Both Sarai and Saphira belongs to her too!! Now Im aware that Sarai’s job at the industries has to do with things outside the compound, but i guess you can take this as a soft-launch onto her permanent work placement since she is still new 😭
Anyways, hope y’all love this!! Sorry I couldnt do Trixie and Kord justice 😔 I haven’t done a comic in so long omg i was in the trenches.

Some Slugterra Worldbuilding
Majority of these things are based on evidence gathered from the show; Currency: Gold (based on the USA 1840s - 1870s Gold pieces) Amounts; 1, 2.50, 5, 10, 20 (Source idea: 'Slugfu Showdown' when Kord and Trixie had their bet)
Government: Each cavern has their own government systems (basically wild west style) with their own law-enforcers. High Plains has a town council whilst Logan Cavern is under the corrupted judge. The justice system does exist across the caverns similar to that of country law with the Security Slingers enforcing it. Eastern Caverns would have a few different rules to that of the 99 Caverns (Source: Episodes 'Mario Bravado' and 'It Comes By Night') Environment: Slugterra's Lumino Crystals are both a power source and are the equivalent to the sun (Source: Slug It Out 2 Beach Cavern (so game canon lore))
Farming and Agriculture: Using the history of colonization, its safe to suggest that when humans descended into Slugterra around 2000 years ago that they brought their livestock and farming with them. Gives explanation to the usage of meat, vegetables and fruits that wouldn’t be possible under the earth. (Source: Mentions of Farming in 'Return of the Elementals', 'Second Chances' and 'The Fall of the Eastern Champion')
Education: The education of Slugterra appears to be something suggested, not something enforced. Manatory; Grades 1 through to 10 (ages 5 to 14) Further Education: Universities and Institutes (15 and over) (Source: "World Beneath Our Feet Part 2" and "Shadows and Light")
Workforce: Most Slugterrians appear to take up some form of Slug Slinging as their profession or hobby. These can include; Security Slingers, Mercenaries, Bounty Hunters, Guards, Slugball Players, Professional Slingers, Adventurers However, there are more professions that aren’t fully based in slinging, such as; Scientist, Mecha Engineer, Blastersmith, Technician, Train Conductor, Train/Rail Engineer, Butler/Maid, Shopkeep, Delivery Driver, Artisan, Cook/Restaurant Employee, Announcer, News Reporter, Miner, Pirate, Barkeep, Council Member, Judge, Spa Owner, Actor, Director, Cinema Worker, Racer, Farmer, Builders, Trackers, Teachers, Professors, Historians With those in mind, more can be thought up such as; Doctor, Vet, Musician, Cleaners, Bankers, Treasurers, Carpenters, Critics, Gardeners, Plumbers, Electricians, Fashion Designers (Source: A majority of the character roles we see play out and mentions of professions from side cast)

Darren Criss and Cat Cohen Will Lend Voices to GWYNETH GOES SKIING in Edinburgh and Utah
Gwyneth Goes Skiing is headed to Edinburgh Fringe this August, and will also make its international premiere in Utah.
Darren Criss will provide the singing voice of Terry Sanderson alongisde Edinburgh Comedy Award Winning comedian, actress and singer Cat Cohen, who will lend her voice  as Gwyneth Paltrow on the vocal track with hits including I Wish You Well and See You In Court.
Darren Criss is best known for playing the role of Blaine Anderson in Glee (alongside the real  Gwyneth Paltrow!). In 2018, he was awarded Emmy and Golden Globe acting awards for his  leading role in The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story. Criss has also starred  on Broadway in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying and Hedwig and the Angry  Inch.
Edinburgh Comedy Award-winner Cat Cohen’s live comedy performances combine stand-up  comedy with cabaret-style songs. The comedian, actress, and singer’s first Netflix comedy  special, The Twist...? She's Gorgeous, was released in 2022. As an actress, she has appeared on  comedy series such as High Maintenance, Broad City, Search Party, and What We Do in the  Shadows.
Criss and Cohen digitally join Trixie Mattel who makes a special on-screen appearance as  Gwyneth Paltrow’s mother, Blythe Danner. They are seen alongside the original Gwyneth Goes  Skiing cast - Linus Karp as the Goop-founding, Door-Sliding, Shakespeare-In-Loving, consciously uncoupling Hollywood superstar Gwyneth Paltrow and Joseph Martin as her nemesis, Terry  Sanderson, a retired Optometrist from Utah.
The world debut of Darren and Cat’s voices will be back where it all began, Park City, Utah. The  now-infamous location of Terry Sanderson and Gwyneth Paltrow’s collision in 2016 will play  host to the US transfer of Awkward Productions and Pleasance Theatre’s runaway hit. Gwyneth  Goes Skiing’s transfer to The Egyptian Theatre marks the first international transfer for Awkward  Productions’ work.
Gwyneth Goes Skiing, which is a co-production between Awkward Productions  and the Pleasance Theatre, returns to the slopes after two sold-out and critically-acclaimed runs  in London. This silly play-with-music marks Awkward Productions’ return to the Fringe  after Diana: The Untold and Untrue Story had a sold-out run in 2023.
Gwyneth Goes Skiing recounts the collision in 2016 on the slopes of Deer Valley and the court  case seven years later that enthralled the world. This very silly story of justice, betrayal and  optometry makes the audience the jury, asking them to decide who's guilty and who's gooped.  Gwyneth Goes Skiing features a whole lot of fiction, a sprinkling of verbatim lines from court  transcripts and delightfully catchy original music by Leland (RuPaul’s Drag Race; Cher’s  Christmas; Troye Sivan’s Something To Give Each Other).
Performance Information The Egyptian Theatre, Utah  Thursday 16th – Sunday 26th May 2024  328 Main Street, Park City, Utah 84060 https://parkcityshows.com

OPLA fan cast polls - Emporio Ivankov prelims B
New poll with correct photo/name combos this time (hopefully 😅).
Tumblr media
The top 2 will advance.
Propaganda under the cut.
Katya Zamolodchikova: She’s a drag queen who was on Rupaul’s Drag Race and is on the Youtube comedy series “UNHhhh” with Trixie Mattel. She’s really fuckin weird and funny and unhinged and could do Ivankov justice.
Alaska Thunderfuck: [No propaganda]
Sasha Colby: She is a trans Hawaiian drag queen who won season 15 of Rupaul’s Drag Race. I think it would be really really important and cool to cast a trans drag queen, given Ivankov’s power. She’s also an amazing dancer, performer, make up artist, and she’s really fucking funny. I listen to her song “GODDESS” on repeat.
Trixie Mattel:
look if ivankov can’t be played by the iconic Tim Curry it should be this fellow icon
Saw the post then watched 'Drag Queens Trixie Mattel & Katya React to One Piece' and now I'm convinced X'D
Where do I start? First things first, I would love to see an actual drag performer play this role, and I think she's known on a high enough scale to count as a valid casting idea (she also hosts things on netflix already so there might be a possibility here). Also Trixie is litteraly the kind of drag queen whose makeup style is kind of "weird" (to quote her, "using her face to create an entirely new face"), and would absolutely scare Sanji if they met IRL. To stay on appearances, Trixie's iconic looks revolve arround giant wigs, so it could fit with the character (you could also easily distinguish the OP character from the drag character because Trixie always wears blonde wigs so purple would be a first). Finally, I think her sense of humor and laugh fit Ivankov's personnality in a way!

I wish starlight had a better redemption arc. lowkey that’s the only reason I hate her outside of her dumbass backstory (I could fix it) and the lack of explanation for her being almost alicorn level gifted. like lemme tweak her backstory a bit:
she was considered exceptionally talented and everyone had high hopes for her to go far in life or could even get into celestia’s school (kinda like twilight) but she was suuuuper attached to sunburst in an unhealthy way (bpd gang rise up) leading to her revolving her entire world and life around him and when he left she completely spiraled and used her powers to keep others around her from leaving. her specialty are memory and mind altering spells since she canonically even after her “redemption” can’t seem to stop revoking other pony’s rights to free will.
she operates on pure natural talent and raw might due to lack of proper training so it was actually really easy to defeat her and send her packing out of her village. her second appearance she came back with the alicorn amulet (the one trixie had in that episode, but it was gone so fast I am ignoring it. that’s such a cool item wasted on one episode?? no) which is how she fucked with alternate the realities.
in a world where friendships and bonds are pretty much building blocks for their society I can see it being probable that pony’s without friends could suffer health wise too. not just mentally but physically. maybe she never got her cutie mark and blames friendship in general for stunting her. she doesn’t hate just twilight, she hates ALL of equestria. every other pony has someone and she has nothing and no one. no friends, no cutie mark, no purpose. just rage.
when she is defeated again, she should have faced actual consequences. send that horse to prison. idk. why did cozy glow get sent to hell. this isn’t about her.
I think a probation period or similar where she has to earn back the right to use her magic while attending the friendship school and amending her crimes would have been good to see. she her earning forgiveness. show her earning her cutie mark! show her apologizing to every pony she hurt and then accepting they won’t like her anyway! I know it’s a kids show and really they can’t do too many heavy topics, but also I hate this horse
Starlight's insane magical power without any amulets or anything bothered me, I like the idea of her getting her hands on it instead of her just being super mega OP. I get it's for the sake of the plot but it's also sort of like...does magic need to be trained? What's the point of magic schools if the average unicorn can learn a teleportation spell rather easily? do you guys ever think about how OP magic gets in the later seasons, regardless-
It felt weird that the way they chose to write her being won over by Twilight is literally forcing her between a rock and a hard place. Either start being nicies or apocalypse time forever, isn't that fun! It makes it even more disingenuous with how little time they spend redeeming her or even having her recognize the impact she's had on those around her (it bothers me the show seems more invested in how Starlight has been hurt by the Our Town debacle than the Our Town ponies). It also doesn't help her backstory is embarrassing...like girl write a letter you can levitate quills some kids have to use their damn mouths!
I disagree with her being locked up, mainly because I think MLP's weird tonal dissonance around incarceration is uh really weird for the neon pony story (seriously. why did they lock the child in tartarus, why did they turn the child to STONE). Rehabilitative justice is a GREAT thing for kids to learn, showing that anyone can change with work, kindness, and friendship (in the show at least lol)! But by not centering who Starlight hurt and just rushing through her actually working to be better, it makes her story lacklustre and half-hearted. At least in my opinion!

Story: That Time When I Was 12 That My Mother Accidentally Took Me To A Burlesque Show
Mom's favorite book is The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas, a classic tale of adventure, justice, revenge, love, forgiveness, and, apparently, nipple pasties. So when she saw there would be a play adaptation running for one night only in the Big City near Hometown, she was so excited that she immediately bought the tickets without reading the playbill too closely.
So, there we were: country mice on an awfully big adventure, off to Big City to bond over wholesome, family-friendly fun in manner of Gilmore Girls or similar. The bouncer (there was a bouncer) asked to see our I.D.s, I said I wasn't 21 and asked if I could still sit in the theatre since the bar (there was a bar) was in the lobby. The bouncer said she'd ask her manager, but my mom went all real housewife gangsta on her: "I'm her mom, and it's okay with me that she's here." She wasn't about to miss the show when she'd already bought the tickets and had to take the train to get here, and the bouncer knew that. I love my mom.
We found our seats and I read the program while we waited for the curtain to come up. We started out like this:
"That's so weird, I didn't even know this place was 21+."
"Yeah, that seems strange for just a normal theatre, like any other. But everyone here is, like, super old."
Then we got to:
"Oh, so this is like, a modern re-telling?"
"Yeah, I guess so."
"Oh, so it must be like Clueless or 10 Things I Hate About You or something like that."
"Probably."
Then:
"Wait, this theatre company is called Manustrip?"
"Huh. That's a weird name."
And eventually:
"Mamá, is this a burlesque show?"
She didn't get the chance to reply before the show started, but I got my answer from Fuschia Folds, Annya Neese, and Miss Trixie Vermouth soon enough. Incredible performances, the highlight was watching two drag queens gag Villefort with her with her own barrister's band and whip her for misbehaving while sitting next to my middle-aged Catholic mother in a very vocal audience.
Where you lead, I will follow.

Young Justice: Next Generation! (OC’s)
R-L:
Power Boy/Danny Wayne-Kent: youngest son of Tim and Conner Wayne-Kent. Telekinesis, super-strength and all the Kryptonian goodies but trying to be as good of a detective as his daddy. But makes up for his cluelessness with his sweet wholesomeness.
His boyfriend Wonder Boy/Sam King-Sandsmark: son of Cassie and Cissie King-Sandsmark. A powerhouse with both fists and bow, has a Lasso of Prophecy, and generally a sweet and swol autistic lad.
His cousin Blue Bolt/Trixie Allen-Kent: daughter of Bart Allen and a clone of Conner Kent from an alternate future. Speed-force, strength-force, zero patience-force especially for the love-birds next to her.
Thanks to the amazing @kevinkomics for doing this combo of pieces for me.
