Splatoon 3: Side Order is good, but not great. I still highly recommend it, but if you care about the story, you're going to be disappointed. Quick review: spoilers ahead.

Side Order was the devs experimenting with Splatoon's gameplay loop. The campaign is a rogue-like, and it works amazingly well. Super fun, super challenging, building my deck and fighting through challenges with the stakes of resetting really scratched an itch in my brain. They did a great job with it.

Unfortunately, I feel like priority went to game design rather than story. Much of the mysterious artwork we saw in the first teaser trailer was completely unused; turns out, all of that was just concept art that never made it into the final product. Side Order failed to make me care about what was happening. I don't know why the protagonist had to be Agent 8; it could've been anyone else and the story would've worked the same.

Octo Expansion was the absolute peak of meshing story and gameplay. The campaign's hook is insanely strong; we immediately empathize with Agent 8 because we know from previous lore that octolings like her have been trapped underground for all their lives. We care about her fight to the surface because it's a fundamentally ideological fight for freedom. The plot stuff about Tartar and the Thangs is just nice set dressing; 8's fight for freedom is the real story.

There's none of that in Side Order. I don't particularly care about Marina's metaverse, even if it's tied to Octo Expansion's story. I don't know why Acht is there other than backstory stuff. It really feels like 8 is just told to do something and she does it because she's the protagonist; she has zero personal stakes or motivations in the conflict. This is a story blunder the devs did in Splatoon 3's default campaign––forgetting to give the protagonist a personal reason to fight––that I hoped would be fixed here, but alas.

What makes it worse is that the gameplay and story progression are completely out of sync. I beat the entire game on my third run in 4 hours. With each run, you get up to two keys to potentially unlock bits of story. That means you'll get about one piece of the story every two runs. There are twelve pieces of the story; I got the first and then beat the whole damn game. Now I have to go back and grind to see the remaining story when I've already beaten the final boss and resolved the conflict. I missed the entire story because I never had to reset because I blazed through the gameplay! It's just a real shame that I experienced everything without knowing... why it's happening. The final boss had me asking myself what the hell is going on because I don't know the backstory at all.

Again, I still really recommend. The devs did a great job, but Side Order remains in the shadow of Octo Expansion's incredible success. Like the default singleplayer campaign, there's just a lot of lost story potential here that, while not necessary, would have really elevated this DLC into something amazing.

please tell me this manga/comic/show exists i do not wanna have to make it

okok I've posted about this before but I'm watching animation content on youtube again while getting work done and by GOD I WANNA TALK ABOUT THIS AGAIN

There's a specific concept I want to consume as content/art so badly but it came to me in a stupid dream. BUT. Sometimes, a dream means I DID see a hint of it somewhere and my brain accidentally plagiarized it which provides me with the teensiest sliver of hope that exists already and I don't have to work on it

It's a kind of a reverse isekai, right? But instead of an instant portal, it's time passing. And what I mean by that is that it's a Sun Wukong story, but the branch off is that after the main events of Journey to the West he gets either water temple'd or trapped in magic sleep again, not for a few hundred years but a few THOUSAND.

He wakes up to an incredibly far-flung China that remembers his myth and only his myth.

The art style that operated in this dream was sort of. Textured but 3D? Think nimona's buttery lighting but instead of emphasis on light and shapes to operate with the stained glass and solarpunk-medieval style the models are textured in a way that just invokes traditional brushwork and colour bleed even in a more cyberpunkish setting. Think like. Whenever there's a night scene the astigmatism glow of lamplight bleeds a little, like ink feathering on paper.

It's a little bit of a Steve Rogers treatment in a way, the world has moved past him, but also completely mythologized and capitalized on that mythology. Rather than treat that man out of time narrative as an aspect of backstory, it's the MAIN character narrative, because this ISN'T a world that needs him. This world is doing pretty okay, actually.

This a story about him.

Not about his feats or how cool his powers are or the 8 gajillion things the magic staff can do but just.

How ya doing, bud?

From the vaguely coherent notes that I could garner from my sleepily typed googledoc, it seems that I wanted this to be a love letter of sorts to the Asian diaspora experience? A specific sort of loneliness? Where the world you experience has a sort of disconnect in that it makes plain you belong there but you also don't, you never have, and there's no way to go "back" but going forward feels like groping blind through the muck. How much right to the past does he feel like he has? When it's been built into something he can't recognize and is clearly important to other people.

I want the pickup of the plot to gain him friends, family, maybe even a conflict or two but the stakes should never elevate vis a vis physical enemies to battle.

It'd be about 2/3 of this sort of narrative drawn story and the other 1/3 just hogwild worldbuilding and design

I've looked at a few other journey to the west adaptations but they mainly just use him as a funky lil action figure hero that's there to be cool as hell and save the day

99% likely this is just a thing my brain is made up and I'd need a several million budget and about 25 additional skills to start the ball rolling but hey, worth it to ask yall again

How to Tame the Merciless Villain - By Peroche (8.5/10)

A submissive, crazy, powerful magician slave plot done right? Is that even possible? They actually start as tentative friends and he falls for her first? AND the Duchess protagonist isn't an insufferable pervert or an idiot? This one is too good to be true.

I kept waiting for a disappointing plot twist, but it has not come yet.

Olivia woke up as the daughter of a Duke 4 years ago, and she's been searching for the main villain for 2. She's been visiting every slave auction, waiting for him to go up for sale. He's one of the most beautiful slaves on the market, so she cannot relax for a day or she will miss the chance to save him.

The villain is named Kian, and he has a very tragic backstory. He was born with incredible latent magical power, but nobody cared. He was born a slave, so the noble class treated him like one. His pretty face didn't help. When his powers suddenly manifested (when an old master attempted to do S&M knife play) he felt wronged. Cheated out of the wonderful life he should have had. He was BORN talented, but all that mattered was his slave status.

The story does a good job with showing his downfall. Originally, he was just a hard worker. A slave willing to work like a dog to survive. He did not have a violent bone in his body. The constant sexual abuse he experienced is what pushed him over the edge.

He had many masters. Which means that, despite his beauty, the wealthy women who owned him always grew bored of him. They passed him around like he was a literal living sex toy.

Worst of all....he had to perform well. This contributed to his breakdown more than anything. He was super submissive and generous to his masters in bed, and still he never got a crumb. Not even a good meal really. He got his own basement room, but it didn’t have a door. He sacrificed every shred of pride in his body, just to live...and then he found out he was special. So special that if he had been born anything but a slave he would have become famous and respected.

I'd snap too.

The original Olivia was your average noble woman. She had fake friends. She was snotty but not abusive. Her family and her maids liked her, but her role was to marry the prince.

The new version of Olivia breaks up with the Prince after she buys Kian. This sets up suspicion across the country. The Crown Prince himself has been abandoned for a beautiful slave. It's a scandal, but Olivia has a plan. She is currently in charge of her family, as her father is ill. She does not love the Prince, and she knows he's secretly a selfish coward.

She wants to pour all of her time and energy into sponsoring Kian. Which will slightly elevate him out of his status as a slave. She must ensure that Kian has decent control over his magic when it awakens in him. He's on the level of a natural disaster. Training him well will basically save the nation.

Olivia is doing her best, but the people around her think she's gone nuts. Sponsoring some nobody slave? That she just met? It is a little fast, but remember. Olivia is on a time crunch. It took two years for her to find this man. She must calm him and tame him FAST. If he discovers his strength when he's still bitter at the world well...heads will roll.

Luckily, Olivia is so distracted by all of her responsibilities that it's impossible for Kian to deny her sincerity. He stops trying to undress for her pretty quick, because she genuinely seems uninterested.

Sure, she thinks he's pretty. BUT she's running the entire Ashford estate AND she just broke up with her powerful fiance. There's no real time to flirt. Instead Kian begins to admire Olivia.

She also saves him from a jealous and sadistic servant who thinks they're lovers. That was a nice touch. It made her look even cooler.

Olivia tried very hard, but the power of envy is amazing. One of Olivia's enemies sends an assassin. It's after a happy night. Kian has his sponsored status lined up. He's learning how to use magic. Olivia even attended a party with him. Their scandalous story has become inspiration for a famous artist, who painted Kian. People are interested in him, instead out outright abusive. Olivia's plan is unfolding perfectly. Kian will be a respected young magician before his true strength manifests.....

.....then the assassin comes before he's strong enough.

Olivia gets stabbed.

Kian starts screaming about how he wants to go home, with her. He carries her back. The earth splits. Blue fire swallows the assassin, and we see how much his admiration has grown. He doesn't just admire his hardworking master.

He's obsessed with her.

Tragic Sky

(very long salty rant ahead (+new Alterna backstory, though! ^^;))

So I've always thought Alterna’s backstory, despite being presented as a grand mystery that’s definitely worth fighting through 90% of the missions to uncover in its entirety…was kinda stupid. :/ I’m all for humanity destroying itself for ridiculous reasons, but trying to launch a rocket in an enclosed space?? Are you serious…? o_O How could the Alternans devote such immense amounts of time and energy to something like that without once thinking, “hey, uh…burning metric tons of high-energy fuel inside of our flammable safety dome might be a little unsafe, idk”.

And it shouldn’t even have been necessary! DX I mean, if they were able to build a dome like that in the first place, wouldn’t they have some sort of scaffolding or elevator system they could use to reach the top and just literally climb out if they wanted to leave that badly?? Had Alterna existed for so long that the technology used to create it was lost to time (seeing as it’s implied that Alterna was destroyed by its SECOND generation, I doubt it)...?? Or, did the writers suddenly realize that coming up with pseudo-scientific lore that explains why inkfishes resemble humanity is wholly unnecessary and adds nothing to the themes of Splatoon…but it was too late to rework the concept, so they just finished off the story with whatever-the-heck and called it a day. ¯_(ツ)_/¯ I guess we’ll never know...

Anyway, my version of Alterna’s backstory starts with a similar premise: humans invented crystal thingies that can manifest people’s desires and whatnot…but this alone caused conflict that eventually doomed Alterna. People began to make their own interpretations of other people’s desires, judging and condemning them for how they manifested. They began treating the crystals’ reflections as compulsory measures of morality and worth, rather than simple expressions of the human heart that exist outside of a good/bad binary. Alterna’s leaders envisioned themselves creating a society of ‘pure truth’, free from the destructive power of deceit and subterfuge…all the while ignoring the destructive power of paranoia and exclusion that they immersed themselves in.

Exclusion escalated to oppression, which eventually spawned rebellion: plans were made to create a rocket that would allow a select group of ‘undesirables’ to escape Alterna for the surface world, destroying the integrity of their safe haven in the process. Despite not knowing what was waiting for them out there, they were willing to take the risk in the name of freedom. Eventually, this secret plan was revealed to the public, resulting in Alterna’s first and last civil war. As the Alternans began to fight and kill each other, the crystals were overwhelmed with the unprecedented ferocity of their clashing desires-- “a violent and terrible chain reaction ensued”, and the energy within them exploded outward. The sky dome, still filled with the beautiful blue of the peoples’ wishes for peace and happiness, came crumbling down, raining fire and shrapnel upon Alterna. The still-poisoned air of the outside world flowed freely into the cavern, ensuring the eventual death of anyone who might have survived.

…Then the crystals fell in the ocean, the sea creatures were imbued with human hopes and dreams, yadda yadda, all that’s basically the same as the canon too. And although I still think it’s unneeded (the mere concept of a bygone humanity in Splatoon carries plenty of weight without all this “lore”, imo), at least now the story isn’t stupid!

It speaks to the way humans actually treat each other, and blames their downfall on their long-established bad habits of cruelty and callousness, rather than morally-neutral traits like ambition and pursuit of the unknown (I would never have expected “curiosity killed the cat” as the lesson of the day from Splatoon, of all franchises. o_O This IS the same game that celebrates individual expression and forging your own path, right…?)

Anyway…I’m gonna be using elements of this rewritten backstory and the theme of “manifesting desires” to flesh out the final boss encounter and Agent 3’s subtle character arc. So please look forward to that~

Ways to Create More Active / Less Passive Protagonists

Recently I made a two-part post on passive protagonists, so what better day than today to get into some tips to help make protagonists less passive? This post will be relatively short — uni is a big ol' pain right now. Enjoy ~

Tip #1: Remember to give them a goal that matters to them.

What does your main character want? A goal is something that your character wants to achieve. It may not be the only goal throughout, and it usually gets resolved at the end of the story, whether the protagonist achieves it or not. It can be tangible like solving a crime, paying off a debt, reconnecting with a family member, or saving the kingdom. It’s completely unique and personal to that character. Ask yourself (or rather, your character) just how much they want/desire this and would do anything to acquire it. What does achieving this goal mean on a personal level to them?

Tip #2: Identify the driving force that’s motivating your protagonist.

Underneath this want/desire, is the character’s motivation for it. As your protagonists goal(s) is the destination, motivation is the number one fuel that drives them to achieve it. It can be anything from survival tendencies, a psychological need, or made out from something internal such as backstory.

What you can do to make their motivation more felt is by connecting their present ambitions and desires to significant moments in their past. As an example: if your protagonist is driven by a desire for wealth, uncover the childhood experiences that helped shaped his hunger for comfort and achievement— thus allowing readers to sympathize with his coming from a state of lack and revelational need to be content with the wealth he already has.

Tip #3: Think about all the threats and dangers that could arise… and throw them straight into your protagonist’s face.

Hey, life ain’t ever easy. It’s especially not much easier in a novel, whether you’re writing an action-packed thriller, a fantasy saga, a cozy romance, or a light-hearted coming-of-age. Every kind of story has some kind of conflict. You should introduce challenges for the protagonist that not only threaten the protagonist's external goal, but also their internal struggles. Push them out of their comfort zone! Also consider what will happen if they fail and what will change if they succeed. Let those stakes gradually elevate, and force them to confront their fears and darkest truths.

Tip #4: Bring on the domino effect: allow the protagonist to influence the story.

We’d want to ensure that the protagonist is not a passive observer, but an active participant in shaping the narrative. In both the short-run and long-run, your protagonist’s actions will influence and affect the world around them. Their decisions, actions, and reactions should ultimately have consequences that ripple and escalate through the story. By having this sort of chain of events, you not only drive the plot dynamic, but also emphasize the protagonist's agency in shaping the course of events.

Deep Night (Thurs iQiyi) ep 2 of 8 (10?) - Everyone seems to be a bit of a player and I’m not mad about it. It’s nice to see high-grade flirting, and I really love how very gay the leads feel. Not BL gay. Actual gay. We shall see how it goes, I suspect we are in "messy gay" territory in which case, I predict utter carnage and that this show will drop ranks precipitously for me. But right now? Of all the Thai BLs airing, I'm enjoying this the most. How bizarre.

I like the side couple (thrupple?) too, despite the prat fall kiss and possible cheating. They very pretty:

To Be Continued (Thai C3 Thailand grey) ep 4 of 8 - oh dear NO honeychild, face masks are gross tasting!

Rule no 966 of the BL world. He’s never asleep.

Argh Achi wants Ji so bad. Nice mutual kiss tho, despite Ji's baggage. I guess Ji knew what would happen if Achi stayed? But why is he so scared? Just deeply closeted? The backstory is very high school achy and I feel like it explained Achi but not Ji. And the crying in the movie was lovely, so we totally understand Achi's but Ji is just messed up and confused? I admit to being a bit confused too. Why is Ji the one so angry?

On a totally different aside, I really like how the set dressing is done in Ji’s apartment. It looks lived in and not staged. Super rare in Thai BL. I'm reminded of Ai & Pond's dorm room in Love By Chance, which actually looked like a real college dorm.

City of Stars (Fri iQIYI) ep 7 of 12 - Why is it always the pulps that actually trot out the best communication, conversation, consent, and healthy relationships? Yes I'm still wincing over the truly bad acting but I’m enjoying their good relationship. The sex scene was sweet and tender, although the likelihood of rose petals getting stuck places wigs me out. (Flower petals + lube = terrible combination. Just FYI.)

ALL PRAISE VERSE REP! And a bottom who owns it! Yay!

1000 Years Old ep 5 of 12 - How ridiculously colorful and flirty they all are. There is nothing at all vampire about this show. I’m a bit bored by the restaurant plot but I'm tuning in for the bonkers approach to goth. How dare they be so cheerful with my precious emo youth, but also, how very Thai pulp of them.

Ongoing Series - Not Thai

Unknown (Taiwan Tues Youku YouTube) ep 4 of 11 - oh it’s SO GOOD. Reading the yaoi and crying. COME ON TAIWAN HAVE MERCY. The red wrapping of the hands (red thread, yes yes we get it). The boy who doesn’t want to box for so many reasons. Not the least of which is how unpleasant it is to spar with a lover.

This is easily the best BL currently airing and it is going to hurt us. But I don't care. I love it.

AntiReset (Taiwan Fri Viki/Gaga) eps 8 of 10 - This show is dangerously cute and I’m scared for everyone involved, including me.

Love is Better the Second Time Around AKA Koi wo Suru nara Nidome ga Joto (Japan Gaga) ep 2 of 6 - Poor baby thrown in all willynilly amongst a pack of queeny bitchy gay intellectuals. I'd be lost too. It's the worse kind of fight, one you have to philosophize your way out of.

Although I Love You and You AKA Sukiyanen Kedo Do Yaro ka (Japan Thurs Gaga) ep 10fin - They are extremely adorable and it was a very good ending - mature, adult, and bittersweet. I liked it a lot. But I didn’t love it the way I wanted to.

The promise of this show, younger cook courts older divorced office worker, should have been my catnip. I mean if someone pitched this to me in an elevator I would have downloaded it by the second storey. Unfortunately, it did not exactly fulfill that promise, not in the way I'd hoped. Did I still enjoy the ride, yes, but I feel just a little let down. 8/10

My Strawberry Film (Japan Thurs Gaga) eps 5 of 8 - Honestly now I’m just shipping the two girls getting together. Frankly, I really don't like this show, and normally I'd DNF but there's only a few eps left and nothing else is airing rn.

Close Friend Season 3: Soju Bomb! (Thai ViuTV grey) 10 eps - I'm exhausted by this franchise and the variety pack style of BL. If there is a particularly good couple (or installment) I might watch it, but I'm letting others decide for me.

A Secretly Love (Thai WeTV grey) 10 eps - I watched the first ep but grey is too much work for this inferior of a show. I may pick up and binge if it gets distribution but for now, it gets a DNF from me. KimCop might have held this crap together but Kim without Cop? No thank you.

Lady Boy Friends (Thai WeTV grey) 16 eps - reminds me a bit too much of Diary of Tootsies only high school, not my thing. DNF unless it turns a corner and is truly amazing for some reason.

Gossip

The choreo controversy - Deep Night vs OnlyOneOf. Look, like a musical rift, or a styling photoshoot, there are no new ideas in choreo, I feel like Madonna did this pose too, a long time ago. Certainly someone in the 80s. Or whatever. Anygay, it's an ironic thing to see a Thai BL being called out by a gay-branded Kpop group when both are exploiting eroticized homosexuality for commercial profit... just saying. (HOW DID WE GET HERE?) Not to mention that BOTH are ALSO exploiting the kink community. We live in interesting times, BLabies. In the end, it's a good publicity stunt all round. And I think Nine knows exactly what he's doing (and why he is doing it). Finally: Drama drama drama around coreo? That is V gay boys. Fun fun fun, carry on everyone.

3/21 Two Worlds (Thai IQIYI) 10 eps - One of those "he's dead Jim so time travel" thingames staring MaxNat. I'm over this concept but Asia flipping loves it and I do enjoy MaxNat. Phupha (Gun) and Khram (Nat) love each other but Phupha is murdered. Then Khram is pulled to a parallel world where, 12 years ago, Khram and Tai (Max) were in love. However, Khram was killed by Tai’s dad. Now Tai finds alter-Khram apparently alive. But then there is ALSO an alter-Phupha to deal with. (Phupha is played by Gun Thanawat who was Khom, the repressed butler bodyguard from Unforgotten Night. We like this, we scared of the love triangle aspect.)

Forgive me a moment of industry noodling?

Have ya noticed that it's slender pickings right now but it shouldn't be? This is not the mid summer slump nor end of year lull. We should be getting some heavy hitters on first quarter release. (Side eyes GMMTV. Perhaps those painful Japanese acquisitions were a bigger issue than any of us realized?)

Anygay, IMHO, Thailand's BL bubble has popped and sponsor money is drying up. This is my shocked face:

Look, the 2021-2023 level of release and growth (exponential) was never gonna be sustainable, so I'm not surprised. I suspect that in 2024 Thailand will actually produce fewer BLs than 2023 (73, 64 in 2022, and 40 in 2021).

I know I'm sticking my neck out predicting any film industry but... I have seen this kinda thing before and it just *feels* like shrinkage. Thai BL's load has been shot, my peeps. (Not to be crass or anything.)

Oh, don't worry you pretty head about it, it's not going away, just getting less prolific.

a little backstory ...

✦ It all starts at an airport - you and your team making your way to the next race whilst he and Barcelona are travelling home. Just as you’re walking through the airport terminal you manage to lock eyes with him for a split second, the sides of his lips curling into a smile. You feel yourself blush and stop in your tracks before being ushered along by your manager. You don't know it then, but the mysterious boy had also turned around to catch one last glimpse of you before your figure disappeared through the terminal gates. At least, as much of a glimpse as he could get before his teammates caught on with jeering whistles and teasing remarks.

Even so, he can’t help but smile a little at the mention of you. “Can you blame me? Did you guys see them last night? They were amazing, I mean Their overtakes were amazing and going from P10 to P3 is insa-” he begins, but is cut off by the groans of his teammates around him who all go off to train on their own. He doesn’t mind though, since he’s the one who’s lucky to have a partner worth bragging about.

✦ Is quite possessive and protective, not because he doesn’t trust you to be loyal or take care of yourself but because he knows what kinds of dangers being famous can pose and he wants to be able to help you through them.

“No, I will not have this.” Carlos throws his hands up in frustration as he begins to walk away from you two. It’s Joao’s first time visiting you on the grid since you’ve ‘officially’ announced your relationship, and you wanted to introduce him to someone you considered a big brother. Only thing was, you had forgotten how deep the rivalry between the team Carlos supported, Real Madrid, and your boyfriend’s team ran. “Carlos, please,” you sound exasperated but in reality you’re trying to hold back laughter at how dramatic his reaction is. “You didn’t tell me your boyfriend was a Barcelona player?” “What does it matter?” “How could you?!” Carlos exclaims, his voice making it clear how betrayed he feels at your decision. Next to you, your boyfriend tenses up - you can tell how nervous he is to be meeting your group of friends and so you take his hand in yours, giving it a comforting squeeze. Even so, this entire situation is hilarious to you. “Oh get over yourself,” you huff. Eventually, you manage to get the two of them to sit down and have a proper man-to-man conversation in which they realise they have more in common than they think - the most obvious being both of them caring for you which they seem to have no problem bonding over. Needless to say, Carlos’ hatred of the opposing club might’ve lessened a little that day.

List of WHERE THE FUCK DID VAGGIE COME FROM?? (and also other exorcists)

1. She was heaven-born: ichor as blood is limited to heaven-born, Adam named her, military schools from being exorcist, picked up Spanish elsewhere (a Winner maybe? We haven’t seen any other angels speak Spanish yet so…)

2. She was a human soul: ichor is in all beings living in heaven (as seen with Adam- but he may be a special case), Adam renamed her, military skills possibly due to past life?, where she learned Spanish

3. She is a human soul, and old info about Vaggie remains canon- she’s Salvadoran and died in like 2014

4. ^ That was a lie she told Charlie, and she either had a different life or doesn’t remember/have one on earth at all

5. She’s a human soul that died and went to heaven but lost her memories (either as all Winners do or just after she became an exorcist.) She didn’t have a name so Adam gave her one. Spanish was something she retained

6. She’s a human soul CHOSEN from Earth to be an exorcist. She didn’t die (maybe she was close though?) but they did take her from her life there and washed her memories away.

7. She went to heaven either by 5 or 6 and didn’t lose her memories. But she was forced to confirm and essentially take on a new identity.

8. She was spawned in some exorcist factory in heaven and that’s why Adam named her.

9. “Vaggie” WAS her name on Earth- Adam was her mom.

10. Adam actually went down to Earth and forced some random mother to name her daughter Vaggie because it would be “fucking hilarious.”

11. He actually didn’t name her, but Vaggie reminded him of Vagina so he started pronouncing it like that.

12. Adam laid eggs and she hatched from those.

13. She’s mothman’s daughter (the cryptid, not the icky douchebag demon.) She was raised on earth but because of her elevated status she became an exorcist when she died.

14. ALL exorcists are mothman’s children.

15. Exorcists are random birds picked from Earth after they complete a challenge.

16. Seraphims just pluck feathers out and boom: exorcist.

17. She wasn’t an exorcist. Adam just gaslit her really hard and also the stick up her ass caused her blood to change color so it resembles ichor. (Ghost written by Angel)

18. All exorcists were created at once by the angels. They all grew up and trained together.

19. Once you reach a certain level of the military on earth you become an exorcist when you die (so maybe it’s a free pass and you don’t have to be “good” to be an exorcist, which explains why some of them are so bent on violence. They didn’t have to go through the same screening as everyone else.)

20. They were conditioned to be like this, with Heaven propaganda and working in Hell made them so cold to demons, and having gone through a rigid military program.

21. They spawned fully formed whenever heaven needs more exorcists.

22. Vaggie isn’t real. She’s an illusion of their conscience. The real exorcist was in us all along.

23. Universe saw Charlie was lonely. Universe said, “here girlfriend.” What’s her backstory? They don’t know either.

24. Their blood is actually PISS and they’re spawned form porta-potties left outside too long.

25. Exorcists are people who died by lemons. When life gives people lemons (and kills them), they turn their blood into lemonade.

26. A glow stick factory in Heaven exploded due to Adam. This was the byproduct. Sera had no idea what to do with them so she gave them to Adam as punishment.

pairing: brother’s best friend!henry cavill x reader

summary: henry was best friends with your brother, theo, which meant despite the clear chemistry between you two, you both had chosen to not date

word count: 2.8k

You and Henry had a very complicated relationship. One that could not be explained without a bit of backstory. So, let’s start there…

Henry was best friends with Theo, your brother. You and Henry weren’t friends, but you were pretty friendly with each other. You had spent plenty of time together, but only with your brother around.

Henry and Theo had met in college and remained very close even as Henry started acting and gaining more fame, which brings the story to the night of Theo’s birthday party.

Theo always loved to go all out for his birthday. This year, he had rented out a rooftop lounge, which was the perfect location for all the people he invited.

You were currently waiting in the elevator, as it took up to the roof. You smoothed out your dress that you had picked for the occasion. It was a short little black dress that made you feel super confident.

You’d be lying if you said you weren’t a little attracted to Henry. He was a very handsome man, but it was just a little crush that you never intended to act upon. He was your brother’s best friend, which made it so much more complicated.

The elevator dinged as you reached the top floor. The doors slowly opened, and as if your life was a movie, Henry was standing in front of the doors.

You felt a shiver run down your spine as you looked at him. He had a white button up shirt on, with some basic black dress pants. He had no reason to look so good in such a simple outfit, but his shirt perfectly outlined his muscles. Let’s just say, you definitely noticed.

“Oh hey, you look great.” He said, lighting up as he saw you. You smiled shyly, “thank you, so do you.”

You stepped out of the elevator, and he stuck his hand out to hold it open. “I have to run down to my car for something, but I’ll be back.” He told you, smiling. You nodded your head. “Okay, I’ll see you up here.” You told him, walking away.

The elevator brought you to a little lobby room that had a few benches and the bathrooms. You looked around and spotted the door to the rooftop.

As you walked out the door, your ears were met by the loud sound of the dj. You took a second to look around and admire all the decorations. There was a dj, a dance floor, a buffet, a bar, and even a photo booth.

The whole place was decorated with silver and gold decorations. You suspected your brothers fiancé, Sarah, had helped him with the decorations.

You surveyed for a second, trying to find somebody that you knew. You spotted Sarah standing a table eating some food. You walked over towards her, smiling and waving once she spotted you.

“Oh, you look so beautiful,” she complimented, pulling you into a hug. You thanked her and then returned the compliment. “The party looks amazing by the way, I assume you helped with the planning.” You told her.

She laughed and nodded her head. “Yep. I love your brother to death, but he doesn’t have a single planning bone in his body.” She told you, causing you both to laugh.

“So, where is the birthday boy?” You asked her. She scanned behind you for a second, and then let out a giggle. “I honestly don’t even have a clue. He went off to say hi to some people and he’s been gone for a while.” She said.

Your brother was not a planner, but he was definitely a people person and also the live of the party. “I’m sure he’ll turn up somewhere. I mean, we know he can’t resist a buffet.” You joked.

“That’s true. Oh, actually, I think I see him over there. I’ll be right back.” She said, excusing herself and walking over to your brother. As you expected, he was chatting with a bunch of his high school friends.

“There you are,” you heard someone say behind you, causing you turn around. You saw Henry standing there with two drinks in his hand. “A tequila sunrise is still your drink of choice, right?” He asked, handing you a glass.

You felt your heart melt over the fact that somehow over the years he had memorized your drink order.

“Yes, it is, but Henry, you didn’t have to buy me a drink. I feel bad,” you told him. He shook his head as he took a sip of his drink. “Don’t even worry about it, it’s fine,” he assured you.

You frowned at him, but he expected it. He knew you had always been stubborn, but it never stopped him. “You sure I can’t pay you back?” You double checked, already knowing the answer. He shook his head again.

“Fine, but I’m buying the next round.” You told him. He knew not to push his luck any further and agreed. “So, how have you been? I haven’t seen you in a while. Didn’t you just finish filming that movie?” You asked him.

He nodded his head. “Yep, we just finished shooting last week. I’m gonna miss it, but it’s nice to just relax for a little bit.” He explained.

“Well, I can’t wait to see it. I’m sure it will be amazing.” You complimented him. He raised an eyebrow and looked at you like you were speaking another language. “What?” You asked, giggling at the perplexed look on his face.

“You actually watch my movies?” He asked you, still looking stunned. You let out a laugh. “What’s that supposed to mean? Am I not allowed to watch them?” You asked, still amused.

He quickly shook his head. “No no, I’m just flattered is all.” He explained. You could feel your cheeks heat up. THE Henry Cavill was flattered because you watched his movies.

“Well don’t go and get an ego now, we don’t need you getting a big head.” You teased him. He let out a soft chuckle. “I promise.” He assured you.

You couldn’t get the smile off of your face, and you felt like a giddy teenager.

Then, you felt two hands grab your shoulders, causing you to jump. You turned around to see Theo standing behind you. “Happy birthday,” you said, smiling and pulling your brother into a hug.

Then, he moved to Henry and gave him a hug as well. “So, you keeping my baby sister entertained?” Theo teased. You jokingly rolled your eyes. “Oh shush, I’m two years younger than you.” You said, playfully nudging Theo with your arm.

You both may have been full grown adults, but you could never get rid of your big brother, little sister dynamic.

“She’s been keeping me company.” Henry said, smiling as he looked at you.

“Yeah, we were just talking about how your birthday parties have gotten so much better since Sarah started helping you plan them.” You teased. Theo jokingly scoffed, pretending to be offended. “You’re lucky I’m in a really good mood,” he told you.

“And why’s that?” You asked, cautious of his answer. “Well, mom may have let it slip to grandma that you broke up with Andrew.” He told you, holding back a laugh. Your jaw dropped as you felt the panic set in.

“Oh god, now I’m gonna get the when I was your age, I was married and had three children already talk.” You said, sighing. This earned a laugh from both Theo and Henry. “Yep, good luck with that. Love you,” Theo said, walking away to go mingle with more people.

You turned back to face Henry. “Andrew was the guy who wore too much plaid, right?” Henry asked. You couldn’t help but giggle as you nodded your head. “Yeah, he was the one at that barbecue my mom had. I think you met him.” You told him.

“Are you doing okay?” He asked, referencing the breakup. You nodded your head. “Yeah, I’m doing okay. I mean, I really liked him, up until he started flirting with a bunch of women in front of me.” You explained.

Henry nodded his head, understanding. “Well, it sounds like you dodged a bullet. You can do better than some douchebag.” He told you, placing his hand on your forearm and rubbing his thumb back and forth. You weren’t ashamed to admit that you got butterflies as he comforted you.

Then, to perfectly interrupt the sweet moment, Henry’s phone started ringing. “Excuse me, it’s my mom. I need to take this.” He politely excused himself.

You spotted some people across the party that you knew through Theo and started to walk towards them. Then, you made eye contact with your grandmother. She made a beeline straight for you.

“Hi, grandma. It’s so nice to see you,” you said, giving her hug as you prepared for the oncoming speech. “Hello there, sweetie. Your mother mentioned that you broke up with your boyfriend.” She said, wasting no time.

“Yes, I did.” You admitted, taking a deep breath before her lecture began. She began rambling and covered all the topics: how you had no boyfriend, how your brother was getting married and you weren’t, and even prodding you to get busy and have kids.

You sat there, silently nodding as continued rambling, barely taking a breath. Over her shoulder, you noticed Henry talking to a friend. You both locked eyes.

Your facial expression must have made it clear you were miserable because you saw him chuckle to himself. You focused back on your grandmother, but you had started to zone out the words she was saying.

You snapped back into reality when you felt a hand on your arm. You realized Henry was standing next to you. “Excuse me, can I borrow her for a moment?” Henry said, looking at your grandmother. Her eyes lit up as her mind ran wild, thinking there was something romantic going on between the two of you.

“Yes, of course.” She said, smiling. Henry continued to hold onto your arm as he led you over to the bar. You both reached the bar, and you turned to face him. “Thank you so much, you are my savior. I swore she was going to keep talking forever.” You said, holding onto both of his hands.

He chuckled. “You’re welcome. I’ve become pretty familiar with the family interrogation about your love life.” He told you. You furrowed your eyebrows as you looked at him. “You expect me to believe that you’re single?” You asked, shocked.

A smile slipped onto his face. “And the flattery continues, you might be a little too dangerous for my ego.” He told you. Just like that, the butterflies returned to your stomach. You lightly hit his arm. “You know what I mean. You just never think that movie stars have a hard time finding a girlfriend.” You explained.

Henry wasn’t done teasing you yet though. “I know it’s hard to believe that we’re just regular people,” he joked, in his most dramatic voice. You rolled your eyes as you giggled to yourself.

You waved down the bartender and ordered drinks for you and Henry. As you waited, you caught Henry staring at you. “What?” You asked, almost worried you had something on your face.

“I just realized that this is the first time we’ve ever spent time together, just the two of us.” He told you. You thought about it and realized he was right. “So, are you realizing you picked the wrong sibling to be best friends with and that I’m way more interesting than my brother?” You joked.

He chuckled and looked down at his feet. “You do make pretty good company. The two of us should hang out more.” He told you, honestly.

The bartender placed down your two drinks. Before Henry could attempt it, you handed the bartender some cash. You held up your finger, stopping Henry from protesting.

“I owe you for saving me back there.” You told him. He thanked you and held up his glass. You clinked your glass against his own. “To new beginnings,” you said, smiling.

You both took a sip from your drinks, maintaining eye contact the whole time.

You had always been attracted to Henry, but this was the first time you were realizing how fun he was to just spend time with.

Henry caught a glimpse of your grandmother walking towards you both. He quickly grabbed your wrist and led you around to the side of the bar where you both couldn’t be seen.

“Was she coming back?” You asked, knowing exactly why he had done what he did. He nodded his head. “I swear, that woman is 80 years old, but her vision is still good enough to find the one person avoiding her from across a party.” You said, laughing. Henry laughed at your joke, almost choking on his drink.

Nothing made you feel more confident than making Henry laugh. It made you feel invincible.

You noticed a gate that let you go to the backside of the bar. You grabbed Henry’s hand and pulled him behind you as you lightly pushed the gate open.

It revealed a whole back private part of the rooftop. There was one of those electric fire pits surrounded by chairs and some other places to sit scattered around. The area was completely empty of people.

You kept Henry’s hand in yours as you walked over to one of the loveseats that was next to the fire pit. You took a seat and Henry kneeled down to flip the switch on as the flames quickly appeared.

He stood up and then sat down next to you. You felt like your heart was beating out of your chest. The fire provided a soft warmth that made you feel cozy.

You felt like your body was moving without your control as you leaned your head onto Henry’s shoulder. You didn’t know that Henry’s heart skipped a beat as you did it. He thought you looked absolutely gorgeous with the light from the fire reflecting on your face.

He moved his arm to rest it along the back of the seat. “It’s a really beautiful night.” You told him, admiring some of the stars in the sky.

“It is,” he agreed, “I’m glad I got to spend some time with you.” He let his arm move to wrap around your shoulders.

You were almost overwhelmed by the feeling of his arm wrapped around you and the smell of his cologne.

“Can I ask you something?” He asked, cautiously. You picked your head up from his shoulder to look him in the eyes. He moved his hand to rest on your thigh, sending goosebumps over your whole body.

Before he could even ask his question, you cupped his face and pulled him into a kiss. He wasted no time kissing you back. Within seconds, your hands were in his hair and his arms were wrapped around your waist.

His lips felt like heaven on yours. You hummed contently against the kiss, only encouraging Henry more. He grabbed your waist and pulled you into his lap, so you were straddling him.

You heard him groan against the kiss, running his tongue along your bottom lip.

You both seemed to have the same thought cross your minds at the same time, as you both pulled out of the kiss. You put your hands on his chest, keeping him from kissing you again.

“We shouldn’t,” you said, using all your effort to stop yourself. “I know.” He replied, simply.

You quickly got off his lap and stood up. “I should get going anyway. I have a flight to catch in the morning.” You said, trying to leave as soon as possible.

He stood up and grabbed your hand. “Wait, can I at least walk you to your car?” He asked you. You slowly nodded your head. He let go of your hand. Both of you knew exactly how complicated this was.

You both walked towards the elevators in silence. Neither of you said a word, until you got to your car.

You went to reach for your car door, but Henry stopped you. “Hey, I don’t want this to make things awkward between us.” He told you, honestly.

“What are we supposed to do? We both clearly like each other, but it would make things way too complicated with Theo.” You told him. He nodded his head. “I know that. Trust me, I wish you weren’t his sister. This would be so much easier. Can we at least just be friends?” He asked you.

You shrugged your shoulders, not knowing how to respond. “I don’t know, Henry. I don’t know if I can ignore the way I feel about you. We can’t let anything romantic happen between us, so it might be easier to not spend anytime together.” You told him.

He shook his head. “Neither of us want to avoid each other. We both get along really well, can we just try being friends?” He asked you. You thought about it for a second and eventually nodded your head.

“Have a safe flight tomorrow then,” he said, opening your door for you.

“Goodbye, Henry.” You said, smiling at him as you got in your car.
