Riven: The Thesis

TW: ALLUSIONS TO AND MENTIONS OF CHILD ABUSE

First things First

If you checked out my Fate rant, smth that truly pissed me off was how they made Riven just straight up unlikable, an ass and low-key a villain.

To me, Riven’s story was always one about how you can change for the better. That it’s okay to be a bit of a prick as a teen cause you’re just a teen and you still have time to grow and change.

So you can imagine my frustration when in the OG, Riven’s character arc was pretty much reset at the start of every season, especially when I feel that they did a great job at showing Riven’s introspection and his wish to change in s1, all for nothing.

And thus… my version of Riven was born.

I tried very hard in s1 to give him a hard shell and a few outbursts but still showing that he’s got a soft heart deep down and is really only lashing out due to how he’s always depended on only himself to survive. And I think I did a pretty good job at that if I do say so myself.

And post s1 we see Riven slowly learn to lower his guard and realize that he’s not on his own anymore. He has a few slip ups because obvs he’s not gonna magically be great at communication but he gets there eventually.

Shirley Holmes and Riven Watson

So, I think that, aside from Tecna, Riven was prob the one that benefited the most story-wise in the changes I made to his family.

Riven has pretty much no one. His dad is very abusive and never truly cared for him and his mom left when Riven was about eight years old, leaving him not only on his own, but to take care of his five year old sister, Shirley.

I gave Riven a little sister to give him even more reasons to have his guard up, because it’s not just his own back he has to watch out for, but he has a sister that depends on him. Shirley herself tells the squad that Riven pretty much raised her on his own.

I love writing these two, who only had each other growing up and are so very close. Up until the age of fifteen, Shirley only ever really trusts her brother.

I think that dynamic adds a lot to Riven’s character. Showing that he is a really caring and protective person, even in the worst of circumstances he always did his best to keep Shirley not only safe but also happy.

Nothing Good Starts in a Getaway Car

Yep, we’re talking bout Darcy.

In my version of events, it would not have made sense for Riven to ever trust Darcy out of nowhere, due to how high he has his guard and the fact that he’s not dumb.

How did I chose to solve this?

Well… Darcy and Riven were childhood friends and had planned to runaway together before Darcy betrayed him, took the money and ran. He knew her as Jennie, his best friend.

Riven only ever had her. Of course he’s got Shirley but… it’s different cause Shirley is his responsibility, while Jennie helped him steal and do whatever they had to do to survive.

Their relationship is def a tragic one due to the fact that they truly loved each other and had each others backs for so long and they were oh so very close to making it, to running together and starting a new life.

But then… Darcy meets the Trix and makes the choice of leaving Jennie behind, which included betraying Riven when they’re fourteen and so close to running.

This is obvs another reason why Riven is especially prickly when we meet him in s1, a betrayal like that was bound to make him even more angry at the world.

But again, Riven is incredibly protective and, once he loves someone, that means he’s also loyal to them, and Riven isn’t someone who stops loving easily. And so… he trusts Darcy. And it nearly costs him his life.

But this is also the thing that truly makes him realize that he doesn’t want to keep on like this. That he wants to change and let his friends in. That he wants to let go of his anger before it consumes him the way it did Jennie… Darcy.

You Don’t Have to be Sorry, for Leaving and Growing Up (Matilda is low-key a Riven song) 

A big thing for me about Riven, especially early on was, again, showing his softer side mainly through Flora, Shirley, Timmy and even Darcy.

His rougher side is on full display in his arguments with Sky.

At the end of s1, something happens that allows Riven to finally be safe enough to lower his guard and start growing, he moves in with his maternal grandparents along with Shirley. And, while it takes both of them a while to trust their grandparents, once they do, Riven can finally, finally, focus on himself for the first time in his life.

He develops a close relationship with his grandma, and starts doing some introspection (with help from Flora and Helia) and starts working on himself.

A big help in this is Musa, who also struggles a lot with letting herself be vulnerable.

Now, this journey of Riven’s is not smooth sailing because you can’t just snap your fingers and undo years of abuse and survival instincts, but he works hard on it and we can see that through his relationships.

Season 2 is Riven learning to be vulnerable and fully trusting his friends. His nicknames are kinda a way to let the squad know how important they are to him, he allows himself to be more goofy and more relaxed and comfortable in his own skin.

He struggles the most with Musa due to the fact that, before a relationship, there is a friendship. He and Musa find themselves being vulnerable with one another, which is huge for the two of them. But as they grow closer, Riven is reminded of his relationship with Darcy and finds himself pulling away.

He eventually makes this right but it was very important for me to have him stumble a bit in his relationship with Musa at least at the beginning cause my boy has Darcy PTSD kay? And that was not going to go smoothly if we’re realistic.

Season 3 was for Riven fully coming into his own, embracing what little magic he has (which he never did before cause he got his magic from his father that he hates so yeah…) and just fully getting a good grade in communication something that is both possible to achieve and normal to want.

In season 3 it’s mainly Musa who struggles with communication, which makes them both struggle but they work through it, this time as a couple. Wooooo. Hoorah for two traumatized kids learning how to communicate in a healthy way!

Thoughts Behind his Main Relationships

Helia

These boys are two sides of the same coin.

They both have had anger issues and, surprisingly enough, Helia was a lot more violent than Riven ever was since Riven had a better hold on his anger due to facing major consequences (*cough* *cough* his dad *cough* *cough*) but they bond over trying to better themselves.

Riven learns to meditate with Helia and occasionally even paints with him. Helia learns to fix stuff with Riven and they both love the routine that comes with being Specialists second only to Brandon so they often do work-outs and bets with each other.

Their friendship is one of very different yet similar lives. They get each other in a: we’ve both come face to face with the darkest versions of ourselves and came out on top, we’ve both hit rock bottom and we’re both working on figuring out how to be better.

They’re both very aware of their darker emotions but never judge the other for it. They both have nightmares regarding their pasts and they can open up because they know that they get one another.

Riven trusts Helia surprisingly quickly, seeing himself in the Wizard. The two can trust each other with their past and their shame, knowing they will only get full support from the other.

Musa

I always loved the idea of Rivusa but hated the original execution.

I really like the idea of two kids who have been so hurt by the people that were meant to protect them figuring out how to love each other. How to be open and trusting and just how to work as a couple.

Riven and Musa fall very slowly over the course of a year and a half, they get to know each other, be friends, quite crucially: they’re able to be vulnerable with each other. Which is huge for both of them.

And, when they realize that these feelings are serious and more than just a crush, they are both terrified.

I talk a bit more about Musa’s feelings on her thesis but for Riven, he’s terrified of being betrayed yet again. Of giving his heart just to have it shattered.

He’s also very afraid of Musa not wanting him if she learns more about his past and all the things he did to stay alive.

The part I love about this is that this means that even after they get together we get to see them fuck up. Because just because they’re together doesn’t mean they’re just going to forget years of trauma and having their walls up.

And, in my version, once they’re together, it’s Musa who fucks up by keeping secrets and not being able to bring herself to be vulnerable.

I think my fave part about writing these two is writing about how they grow together both as individuals and as a couple, how they learn to communicate and be vulnerable and realize that they are both here to stay and that this relationship is soft and safe and everything that they have been denied for so long.

That’s what this couple is to me. Two kids learning to love and not be afraid of it.

Flora

Riven and Flora are soulmates. I have no other word to describe their bond. Even soulmates doesn’t feel like it can fully encompass their bond and how important they are to one another.

They have similar fears and traumas, though they respond in wildly different ways. He can’t let himself be vulnerable, she can’t stand her ground. But they find each other and somehow, they start healing and growing together

Their bond is ‘there are people that you just have to meet in order to become the best version of yourself and I know that if I hadn’t met you I would never have been able to become my best self. There are people that just have something to teach you just by knowing them, there are people that love you so purely that you can do nothing but want to grow with them and teach each other so much just by existing together. And you know that if there are other lives, you’ve met them in every past life and will meet them in every future life because you own a piece of each others puzzles that you both need to complete yourselves.’

Their love is absolutely pure, I just love it and can’t quite find the words to describe just how special it is.

Who is Riven in this Rewrite?

Riven’s arc is one that I just have really loved to write. The story of an abused, angry boy that struggled to survive finally being safe and getting to work on himself and let go of that anger.

Riven is someone who has had to look out for himself his whole life, who always been pretty much on his own, the only people he trusted stabbing him in the back.

What is most important to me is that Riven is someone who refuses to let his past define him.

He gets the chance to go to Red Fountain after jumping and trying to rob one of the teachers (James) but, when he gets that chance, he decides to make the most of it, to make a good life for both himself and for his sister.

At his very core, the most important part of Riven’s character is that he is first and foremost, a protector.

He’s the big brother who took beatings to keep his baby sister safe. He stole for his sister and for Darcy to keep them both fed. He’s the boy who, before s1 even started made a friendship with Timmy and dared anyone to make fun of him.

He would do anything for his friends, for Helia, for Flora, for Musa and of course, for Shirley. Because once he gives even a small piece of his heart to someone, they have it for good. For better or for worse.

Riven is a boy growing into an amazing young man against all odds. He’s a boy who took the cards he was dealt with and made a royal flush.

Riven is someone who chose to let go of his anger and grow. He’s someone who decided to become someone he could be proud of.

Interesting that you believe C to be a "very, very good actress" but S is a "gifted actor".

From what I've seen of both, I think that C was blessed with innate talent and her versatility is eye-catching.

S is good but not memorable. He doesn't command the screen. And, I say this after watching most of his projects. Outside OL, he hasn't impressed. To me, he's himself in all. Same facial tics that we've noticed since S1. After Suspect, I had little hope for TCND because the same director was in charge. Unfortunately I was right. S was no better than before. I'd advise him not to work with Dries Vos anymore. He's awful. At this point I'm not sure it's just the inferior roles S takes but that it has more to do with his limited acting abilities. After 10 years I hoped for better.

Dear Not Memorable Anon,

How ironic. A very recent comment I had the imprudence to post in one of my threads, basically wishing for 'more complex roles ' for S immediately attracted me an insult from someone (it does not matter who, but a shipper or rather a fencer, I should say), who thought I was a 'brainless moron'. I still do not understand why and I did explain what I meant.

I see great potential in S and you seem to forget the grueling schedule they have because of OL, forcing them to refuse a lot of pitched projects. Her choices were probably better oriented, bearing in mind that I only saw her in Belfast, outside OL, and was underwhelmed with the whole movie, but enthusiastic enough with her. As for him, let's say that When the Starlight Ends was a tragic BS all the way, but also a wonderful, totally disinterested gesture of kindness towards a personal friend. The rest, I am not interested to see and I still wish for that breakthrough movie project allowing him to: a) emancipate his image from (yes, fellow insulting blogger!) the very complex OL/JAMMF formula and b) explore something else than action movies with lots of muscle. TCND was not that bad, but not nearly good enough. Yet, he is still around and he works and people watched him. All these are very good news for a very volatile market, post strike. Oh, and I almost forgot about Love Again - haven't seen it and I suspect it is forgettable.

That being said, I hope you realize that all these opinions, mine and yours alike, are completely personal and subjective. On the other hand, any indicators measuring audience are exactly that: numbers and statistics. It's exactly like discussing a Jackson Pollock painting: you might think it's the cat's meow. However, I might also think it's someone who randomly kicked a bunch of cans with paint on a canvas. And then smeared everything with the demented energy of a 5 year old, left to his/her own devices:

How I think each of the s1 and s2 Empires characters would react to seeing each other.

False is kinda terrified of Pearl, but overall thinks she's cool. Pearl wants False to be her new sparring buddy (like, the woman built a machine to murder giant hunks of metal and wears clothes she pilfered from a corpse, of course Pearl would love her). False doesnt understand that this is a statement of affection and is even more terrified.

The Scotts are just the 'Misery and CPR' meme. Elf Scott keeps talking about his demon brother and tragic backstoryTM, and the Chromia king just goes "oh yea a magic skull stole my eyeball and a wizard gave me a new one.' Eventually they start talking about their bfs and become friends ('my husband rescued me from a dungeon so I built him a cave full of his favorite things' 'nice. My boyfriend just shows up randomly and gives me wood').

The Jimmys absolutely confuse the hell out of each other. The Codfather just off-handedly talks about his traumatic past in between bouts of how awesome his sister and brother-in-law are. He's a god and totally unbothered by it, while the Sheriff keeps grumbling about God calling him a toy when he is Not A Toy. They introduce each other to the other Norman.

The Sausages just point at each other like the spiderman meme. They joke about their trauma while still smiling. They coo over Bubbles together. The protector of Sanctuary talks about Eddie and Hermes. The king of Mythland talks about his little siblings and how much he loves them; he also mentions his best friend who sounds suspiciously similar to the sunflower goddess...

The Joels HATE each other. God Joel keeps making fun of the Mad King for being short and made of clay and he just laughs his ass off, doesnt acknowledge him, and rants about how amazing his fish wife is. God Joel feels insecure and angry, the Mad King is offended because someone is ignore how AMAZING AND WONDERFUL his wife is.

The Pixls have a wonderful afternoon drinking and spilling tea. They discuss philosphy and history, they lovingly make fun of Jimmy, they compliment each other's empires.

Shrub and Shelby are instant friends. Shrub is kinda scared of Shelby because witches could mean bad news, but Shelby instantly introduces Tortoise and all goes well. They talk about their different magic, Shelby gives a whole bundle of potions to the wolves. They talk about how cute Katherine is and mom-friend Joey.

The Joeys respect each other. They arent that close, but they think each other are cool. They fight over if Katherine or Xornoth is better; neither wins but they have fun coming up with compliments for the people they like (they also talk as if said objects of affection love them back).

The Katherines go monster hunting together. Overgrown Katherine talks about her awesome gnome gf. Glimmer Grove Katherine complains about her suitor that cant seem to understand that she isnt a pirate.

At first, the fWhips bond over chaos and destruction. 'I put wardens in half the server's bases to thank them for coming to my wedding' 'I created a ravine.' All goes well until Jimmy gets brought up. Count fWhip complains about the whole 'board of dead salmon' thing, and Goblin fWhip jumps to his defense. They get into a big ol fight and make up a little while later.

The Gems, while amicable, dont really like each other. Wizard Gem thinks Princess Gem's a scardy cat, and Princess Gem thinks Wizard Gem is too intense and a little scary. They do have fun talking about fWhip and Sausage though.

Mayor Lizzie is both a little intimidated by the ocean enpress, and also thinks she's super cool. She's an actual strong, tall, powerful god (unlike the one from Stratos). She is a little scary, though, cause of the army of axolotls and the whole water thing. The ocean empress thinks she's nice (and kinda funny); Mayor Lizzie really reminds her of her friend with his empire of cats before he got corrupted...

Happy Weekend all :) This one was very fun to review for me. Its one of my fav eps of s1. Such good content for Chenford and Lucy. Non stop goodness from beginning to end. Had to take some screen shots with my phone while watching cause there wasn't a gif for everything. Luckily have new phone so they came out pretty nice. TON of moments and I only get 30 gif/image limit which I hit quickly and felt on this one haha Lets delve in shall we?

1x14 Plain Clothes Day

First off Tim in street clothes? Yum. Gimme. I’ll take that all day. Plus he’s in a Henley too whew lord. What a distraction to have haha Second you can see he’s already fully enjoying himself. Ah plain clothes day. I’m sure Tim has been looking forward to this for awhile. They all look so excited. Lucy is as amped as the other two to make decisions solo. Well that is until Tim opens his mouth.... He is very eager to get under her skin. Asking her what she's looking at? That he's not even there...

You can see the nerves written all over Lucy’s face now. All she wants is to prove herself to him and this is her biggest opportunity to do so. You can see how uneasy she is while the other two still seem psyched af. Oh the amount you will grow in this episode Lucy. You have no idea.

All the T.O.’s start to talk bout their wash out numbers on PCD behind them. Tim saying his is in the double digits by now. 11 to be exact. Tim is an ass and says he’s looking to making it an even dozen today. (Like he would ever actually want that... please Timothy why you always lying? ) Lucy’s discomfort only continues to grow. Poor thing. It’s clearly a tactic to get under all their skins, sadly working on Lucy more so than the others atm.

Lucy is loading up the shop when Tim pulls out an envelope. She sees it has her name on it and asks what he’s doing? Tim informs her that he already filled out her eval. Lucy looks confused as hell saying they haven’t even started yet. How could he possibly have her eval done? Determined to be under her skin and live there today, Tim tells her he already knows how this day will end. So mean good sir so mean..

Lucy is refusing to let him psych her out, but then gets in the passenger side LOL Oh my girl it's gonna be a long day for you haha. He does say Thank you when she leaves the passenger door open for him though ha

Tim hands her the envelope. She is not allowed to look at it till end of shift. I do love her tenacity/confidence after he does this. Lucy has gained back some in this moment. Telling Tim she’s gonna prove him wrong with whatever he wrote about her. As I said earlier she wants so badly prove herself to him. Even if she has to puff herself up in order to do it. Wants Tim to see her bravado before they head out.

Sadly it doesn't last long. Its his mission to rattle her cage as much as possible today. He goes and squashes that confidence out the gate. Because Tim be Tim. The fact that he knows Lucy this damn well is backfiring on her hard. Instead of leaving the garage confident she leaves deflated.

Doesn’t take long for Lucy to find her first criminal of the day. A perv pretending to be a cable guy filming a woman in her house. I do love Tim watch her during it all. The way he silently observes as she handles it. Her taking that guy out with her door was pretty bad ass. Trying right off the bat to show him she’s capable. Lucy is feeling pretty damn proud of herself atm. Caught a pervy guy early on and thinking she has totally got this. That look from Tim is so very telling as Lucy puts that guy in their shop. It's a 'We'll see.' as she puts away their criminal.

Speaking of criminal It should be to look this damn good leaning against a van. Even though Tim is being smug af in this scene, he looks fine as hell just standing there. Ovary explosion for me haha that badge, his Henley riding up over it. *fans self* Eric you’re so attractive it’s not fair haha

Lucy starts rattling off her checklist before they leave. Making sure she's done everything right. Tim is clearly trying to get her to notice the van for which he is leaning on. It’s for more than just looking sinfully delicious. He’s trying to get her to put two and two together and finish this scene up properly. He has his phone in his hands for a reason. Just in case she doesn't pick up on the clue he's trying to emit to her. Lucy senses something but she isn't sure what.

He gives her ‘the look’ the one Lucy has learned and seen for months. The one he gives her when he is trying to get her to think a little more. This is his other way of trying to get her to connect the dots. Now Lucy notices he’s giving her his 'Bradford' look. She just isn’t sure why....

Lucy finally says they’re all wrapped up confidently. That this is a solid arrest. Trying to prove to him she did a good job on her own. Tim pushes off the van as his last ditch effort to get her to notice it. Lucy sadly doesn’t do this or realize what she is leaving behind. Her body language is reading she isn't sure of herself now and no idea why but leaves anyways.

They make it to back to the station and Lucy pulls out the eval when she’s alone. Or thinks she is. Naturally Tim knew she was going to open it early. He knows her like the back of his hand. It’s not the real eval and he catches her. Uses this as a opportunity to tell her about the van she left behind. Tim goes over how she left a treasure trove of evidence on the street. Didn’t process the scene as throughly as she should’ve. Or thought she did. That he saw this coming because he knows everything she is going to do. Lucy panics and checks the pervs phone in evidence and sees he’s texted a friend to get his van.

She rushes back to the scene only to find it gone. Lucy calls it in and finds out it was impounded. Tim had it taken care of for her. Hence the phone in his hand the entire time he was near the van. Teaching her a lesson without actually getting her in trouble for missing evidence. It was a stressful adrenaline rush for Lucy to go back, but she’ll never forget to do that again. She may not think he was taking care of her in the moment but he is. Lucy thinks he’s doing it to humiliate her. She's so frustrated she is lashing out at him.

He explains he did it this way cause she overlooked a massive detail. That he is teaching her to control her environment, be detail oriented and honestly she will never ever forget this. It’s rough for her but like everything else, Tim is challenging her like this because he knows she will rise to the occasion. Lucy wouldn’t have remembered this if he had just handed it to her. She is rattled and annoyed. This is a rough rough start to her plain clothes day.

They move onto Lucy’s next call. It’s for a noise complaint for a dog. Lucy tries to calm the dog down and the dog barks at her. Tim comments this isn’t what he meant by her ‘controlling her environment. ’ The guy Akers is a douche and not good to his dog. Honestly I would’ve wanted to verbally eat him too tbh. I’m with Lucy on wanting to take this guy down. You’re mean to animals something seriously wrong with you IMO. Animal lover in me was rooting Lucy on in this scene. She tells him she's going to make him her 'Personal Pet project' leaving both Tim and Akers stunned.

The way she says that line what a BAMF. Also lets talk about the look on Tim’s face. It’s a mixture of impressed and a little bit of ‘Why am I turned on right now?’ Baha You know he didn’t hate seeing her with some serious confidence after that first crime scene. That attraction for him with her for sure growing in this moment. Sadly even though she feels justified with what she said it comes back to bite her in the ass. She over compensated and threatened the man while trying to prove herself after the van incident. They are called to Grey's office with some bad news.

Akers has decided to call in a rude conduct complaint on Lucy. His way of getting her back for putting him in his place. You can see how visibly upset Tim is over this. Grey tells them he called it in saying she threatened him. To be fair he made the first threat but she’s supposed to be better than him. Being the bigger person always sucks and is never fun. Lucy now faces possible firing and washing out. IA has been notified and Lucy looks devastated.

They go to lunch and she of course is freaking out she’s gonna get bounced. Talia and Tim are talking about it as well. She asks why didn't Tim step in if Lucy threatened the guy. He says its cheating and he is a man of principals after all. Talia is actually very worried Lucy could get terminated. Its then you see that protective side of Tim come out. Saying he won’t allow her to get fired. That this guy is a jerk but there is no way he would let anything happen to her. Plain clothes day or not.

Talia calls him out on that, she thought he was a man of ‘principles’. He of course is going to contradict himself for Lucy. Like in previous ep when Tim said circumstances dictate his actions. Well he’s not going to let this ass hat take her career principles be damned. Any other rookie he would've let wash out. Or even been ok with that. Not Lucy. He wants her to succeed so badly. Everything is different with her. He would go against his principles to save her. That is the thing of importance to note here.

This is the second best scene the entire episode for them. Tim refuses to let his schmuck get her fired. Lucy say's they shouldn't be back here. This guy filed a complaint against her. Tim tells her she's not he is. He’s bending his own rules to save her job. By saying she 'made' the decision to have him save her career. Sneaky sneaky Tim, good way around your own rule.

Lucy recognizes he’s going to bat for her here. That he's had her return them to this house so he can fix it. Tim is going to scrape and claw to keep her from washing out. Even if it means taking on the complaint himself instead of her. I don’t think Lucy has ever had anyone believe in her or protect her the way Tim does. Now at this point in time we don’t know her parents. Or the emotional damage they’ve inflicted upon her. But if you do you can see why this would mean so much to her. It’s a career her parents don’t want for her and were hoping she would give up on, and here is this man who believes in her and is willing to fight to keep her around.

Tim can’t expose too much vulnerability in this moment. So he deflects her appreciation for what he’s willing to do for her. Says if she’s going to be fired it’ll be because of him. The irony of that statement in this moment. Such a small but impactful moment for them. It’s what makes Chenford great. All these small moments that add up to what makes them so damn incredible in first place. That foundation being laid.

The chat doesn’t go in Tim’s favor at all. Acker says he’s going to file a complaint against Tim too. He returns to the car and tells her drive. Lucy notices the dog crying at the garage and pacing. They see blood on it and Lucy says she has probable cause to check. Tim tells her if she’s wrong she will definitely get fired. That this is her call to make though. Lucy doesn’t hesitate in going to check the garage. Acker sees her and tries to stop her.

They open the garage and find the body of his neighbor. Guy tries to take Lucy out. She takes him down easily and Tim looks on impressed as hell with her. Not only for that takedown but her initiative and going with her gut in the moment. She noticed the blood on the garage and knew something was wrong. Then made the right call when the moment called for it. That’s all Tim wanted her to do all day. Trust her gut. He knows she’s a great cop He just needs her to believe that. His goal was to build her self esteem and he did.

This final scene really seals the deal for the building of that self assurance. Tim knows right now she needs some comfort. So he has Lucy read her evaluation. Lucy thinks it’s the end of the road for her so what’s the point? He needs her to know how well she did today. Not the whole day mind you but she was clutch at the end. Lucy is only going to remember what she did wrong today not what she did right. Tim knows this about her. Why he makes her read it. To him it’s not how you start it’s how you finish and she finished strong as hell.

Tim is very attuned to what Lucy needs and when. At this moment in time she needs comfort, and words of assurance. He compliments her for the first time really. Lets her know yeah her day started off really rough. But when the chips were down she didn’t hesitate. She made the right call when it mattered and he knew she would. He is dying for Lucy to see what he see's in her. This scene is the start of that. The start of her believing in herself as a cop. Because when the pressure came at her she was strong, self assured and kicked that situation in the face.

Tim knows this is not the time to hold back what he thinks of her. To put away the tough ass T.O. in this moment. He’s so damn proud of her and wants her to know it. After he's built her up he tries to lighten the moment for her. Makes his little shot of 'Now he has to rewrite the damn thing.' Cause she proved him wrong. He wants to make her smile before her meeting with the Capt. He would never tell her as much but he’s probably so relieved and happy to do re-do her eval. Their foundation is so damn solid I can’t get over it. He believes in her so much. It’s why he pushes her the way he does. I know he thinks she’s exceptional he just needs Lucy to start believing that.

The ending is perfect. The work flirts continue but this time on Lucy’s end. She walks over to Tim and hands him an envelope. Tells him it’s her evaluation of him. Tim tells her that’s not how it works. Lucy replies ‘If you don’t want to read it don’t.’ and cooly walks away. Lucy ushers the boys out before Tim can open it. When he does he realizes it’s their bar tab LOL just like in 1x06 when she steals his wallet he’s too impressed to actually be mad haha such a good episode for them top to bottom.

there's a possibility that mike will come out to karen in st5

i mean, it would be a possibility. but why karen? well i'll try to explain what i think about it, but this could also be a wrong consideration, so take everything with a grain of salt.

we already know karen will accept mike, no matter what; in s1 we have a scene where karen talks to mike and it's a such queercoded scene. she talks to him like he's going to come out to her, and she also mentioned will (a canonical gay character). she told him that he can talk with her and he dosen't have to feel like he has something to hide from her. she told him she's there for him, because she loves him, not matter what. a little queercoded huh? in these scene mike didn't tell her the truth. it would be good to close the circle with him telling karen the truth this time, and this would be so important to both mike and karen. now i'll explain why in the following points.

this would be an important part for karen's journey... ; karen's arc revolves around the love she has for her children and the gap between them. we see this clearly already in s1, with both mike and nancy. karen knows she's not the best mother, but she just wants to feel loved by her children. she tries to talk to them because she knows how heavy it's feeling like you can't be yourself or you don't have your place in the world. she dosen't want their children make the same mistakes she did. in s1 both mike and nancy lied to her. in s3 we have nancy opening herslef with karen, and honestly it's one of my favorites scenes of entire s3. for the first time we see a vulnerable karen, who opens up fully for the first time to both her daughter and the audience. plus, if she and mike will have one "heart to heart" scene in s5, her arc will be almost completed, because she will finally feel loved by her children.

...and mike's ; most of us already know what mike is going through, and we figured out pretty clearly that this boy has to cry, to scream and throw it all out. plus, karen would be the perfect one to make him understand that he's perfect in the way he is, that he dosen't need to pretend to be someone else to be loved by people, because he's already loved. this boy is loved more than he can imagine, and the love in which he is engulfed is beautiful. also he needs to be hugged. and i wanna see another hug from mike and karen. i pretend it.

it is implied that both search a connection with each other; multiple hugs, when both are about to burst into tears/are crying. but they never talk. and they need to talk. i'm talking specifically 'bout this scene

karen has been getting closer and closer to the supernatural plot and in the next season she'll reach the pinnacle; we saw gradually how during the seasons her suspicions grew (this is because mike or nancy never revealed the truth to her, they hide it) and now she sees with her own eyes what's going on. she always had more space and focus than the others. maybe she'll also be important in the events that will come. this mean: more interactions with other characters, more focus, more screentime.

mike's coming out would be a heartbreaking, beautiful and very sweet moment and he needs a scene like this, and it would be a beautiful parallel to the will's veiled coming out to jonathan.

Ngl sometimes i feel bad abt disliking LMK so much because some of my friends like it alot and one of them hyperfixates on it. But then i remember just how badly it fucked up in depicting Sun Wukong's character that im pretty sure even villainous portrayals of him in media have given him more dignity, how Six ears basically got woobified and Karma Houdinied despite the show itself showing him as a pretty fucked up villain in S1, how much the Eng Dub butchered the hell out of the Bull Demon Family's dynamic and that this show basically removed one of the core aspects of the story (Buddhism) and then i suddenly dont feel that bad anymore.

Plus its not like they know my actual opinions abt it. As long as they dont ask i think im good lol

Monkie Kid spoilers & complaining & likely exaggerating things below so avert thine eyes if you don't want to see all that

gterewfs not to add even more to the apparently intolerable trend of bringing up Xiyouji when talking about Monkie Kid but it is kind of funny how I've now seen multiple people say a lot of their dislike of the lego show comes from knowing how Sun Wukong can be depicted when he's not being written as a cringefail hermit (X_X). And as is @seasonalsummers if pressed you can probably just tell your friends that Monkie Kid just isn't your thing & leave it at that. Because yeah I've spoken before how it's not fair to expect people to make their way through the ~1,400 pages of the best English translation of the og classic in developing their sense of the journey and Sun Wukong's whole deal, and the vast diversity of depictions of the Monkey King in retellings does seem to stand testament to how much this monkey can be changed to suit the needs of a story. And as is the existence of Zaju Xiyou Ji does demonstrate how even in China this monkey's had bouts of being depicted as little more than a selfish clown, so maybe this is just the west's version of that lol.

THAT SAID, aaaaaAAAAAAA yeah genuinely is baffling and frustrating watching many people cheer and clap for what feels like the constant traumatization of Qi Xiaotian and the constant use of Sun Wukong as Monkie Kid's punching bag. Like heavens to betsy Flying Bark has so relentlessly focused on how thoroughly SWK screws up everything in both the past and the present and apparently, on his own admission, spent the entirely of his immortality doing little except making one mistake after another (i.e. routinely fucking up his life and the lives of everyone around him) that one really is left wondering why any of the show's cast would want to be even within 50 miles distance of this monkey, which is definitely something made all the more awesome by the sense that maybe the main reason is because the obvious villains of every season are explicitly trying to take over/ blow up the entire world rather than blundering their way into that position :(. And that's a dynamic definitely made even MORE awesome by everyone's favorite poor little meow meow never did anything wrong ever the Six-Eared Macaque spending the majority of his screen time both beating the tar out of Qi Xiaotian and telling anyone who will listen what a dumb bitch Sun Wukong is before the show then bends over backwards to validate his claims all while making sure he's never even slightly called out for the shit he pulls, with the clear favoritism made all the more clearer by such facts as Sun Wukong got screamed at by Long Xiaojiao in an extensive and dramatic scene for putting basically the monkie gang and the entirety of reality in danger through his doofus decisions and yet even though she literally watched the shadow simian beat Qi Xiaotian into unconsciousness and literally had her life seriously threatened by this same monkey until Tang Shifu started oh yeah the Fire of Samadhi ritual she's apparently perfectly fine with working with Mr. Six not long after. Add on top of that the way it now feels like SWK's not even really allowed to be friends with anyone except Macaque or even to interact with any of his other former besties in any meaningful way, and well this is really making for a not fun situation that keeps steering the plot away from some of the most interesting fun and heartfelt things that Monkie Kid could have done. And then on top of that Flying Bark has now shown themselves to have this habit of spending the majority of each season focusing on what a screw-up SWK is before waiting until the last possible episode before characters who up to that point couldn't have made their hatred for the Monkey King and Qi Xiaotian by extension more clear start pulling out abrupt and honestly hand-wavey reasons for why they suddenly like him. IDK! I like a good redemption arc but that's not something you can speedrun and then pretend like it's even remotely satisfying! And definitely doesn't do SWK any favors with the way he just stands there maybe looking kind of sad while someone yells at him for sucking entire before he runs off to suck at everything again and is barely ever allowed to be explicitly and messily upset about that or about what a colossal failure his life is or idk mayhaps what happened to the og pilgrims that apparently resulted in their premature deaths!! For as much as people keep saying they want characters to redeem themselves through living and working to be better and be upset and fucked up about their pasts well it sure might be nice in this situation if we actually got to spend some time on that instead of just relentlessly piling one catastrophic blunder on top of the other! tsetawraer sorry for the rant but yeah still pretty shocked on how much a silly lego show that started off as having fun adventures with the Monkey King would turn into the grimdark adventures of Young Man Traumatized, Asshole Goku, and the Stalker Shadow (X_X)

Part 10/? Kate/Anthony scenes I will never get over

Season 2 Episode 2: Off to the Races

Just FYI I apologize if the picture quality is terrible, I tried to fix it (stupid white shirts!). Also, I know I’ve been doing all of this completely out of order and I hope that it isn’t too annoying; I really just make these as I think about them. Anyway, let’s get to the scene!

A: “She is pompous and arrogant and quite sure she knows best in every situation.”

C: “She sounds like a terrible nuisance.”

B: “Especially since you are the one who knows best in every situation.”

I love how the first thing we hear out of Anthony’s mouth in this scene is something about Kate. They’ve obviously been discussing her, and maybe not for the first time.

As long as we’ve known Anthony, he hasn’t been in the habit of discussing his romantic interests to his brothers (Edwina doesn’t count because she’s a matter of business (I’m sorry, girl!) and from what I remember in S1 Benedict kinda knew he was seeing someone but Anthony didn’t mention anything until the morning of the duel) so it doesn’t surprise me that his brothers aren’t able to see past his frustrated exterior for what Anthony really is--which is a man who has met his match in every way and is completely flustered by anything and everything revolving around Kate.

His brothers instead seem a little fed up with his nonsense--after all, he’s never exactly been the easiest person to get along with himself. Fortunately, Colin and Benedict are used to Anthony’s hot-headedness and know how to be around him and not take him too seriously. They like to push his buttons a little, but then offer some actual words of support.

C: “You take too much upon yourself, brother. Perhaps your life might be easier if you pursued someone with a less disagreeable sister.”

A: “Why should I be the one to admit defeat?”

He looks SO annoyed here and I can’t help but find it utterly adorable. 

As they continue to discuss Kate, he becomes so worked up he can barely even concentrate on fencing any longer. 

He sets himself up to face Benedict, but he’s so worked up he leaves his stance unexpectedly, which amuses Colin and Benedict greatly.

A: “I shall certainly not let some sister, especially one younger than me, keep me from getting what it is I want.”

B: “Who it is you want.”

Anthony has won every single matchup until this point, and Benedict defeats him here for the first time. The topic of Kate has him so wound up and he knows she’s done that to him. It makes him even more annoyed that she’s now getting into his head seemingly without her even having to be there, and he then takes it out on Benedict and causes the latter to fall (my poor bby). With that last bout of victory, he seems to feel like he’s not only defeated Benedict, but Kate as well, and he lets that reinvigorate him so that he sets off with more determination than ever before.

TSITP S3 Predictions

Thank you!!! I took a while to really analyze things.

So my predictions for s3 based off my previous post would be this.

I believe were going to get a full season or close to a full season of jelly really in love. I think we are going to see them in a loving relationship as a campus couple , I think were going to get povs from Belly, Jere and people around them. I think their going to be happy for at least half of it or more than half of the season.

I don’t know much about the books but me being in this fandom for a bout a week now, I’ve seen a whole lot 😭😂

I know sort of what goes down in book 3. I gotta be honest that’s something I dint want to see because if would completely destroy Belly and Jeres characters. ( tbh I feel like it came left field in the books from what I know but that just my personal opinion)

I don’t think major conflict is going to happen untill close to the end of the season if any. The reason being the best stories are always built up really good just to term em down 😭.

I think people need to watch this as an adaptation and not a direct copy of the books too. I read something about Jenny wanting to change things for the show , and tbh I think thats great in this case of a love triangle story because its like a alt universe of the original. ( At least thats how I see adaptations anyway 🤣)

I think Jenny Han has things up her sleeve that probably haven’t even happened in the books , to bring a new life to the story or like a “what if” this could happen sort of thing.

I think possible themes of conflict could be any of these:

-Cheating ( which as of rn I don’t think would be implemented just yet, I’m not ruling it out though )

- Job opportunity difference / moving or something that is needed obligatory event and they’d have to split (long distance)

-Some random conflict in cousins

- A proposal /engagement but cold feet in the end

- An important character maybe gets misinformation and the pot gets messy and insecure feelings resurface

- Belly gets pregnant 👀 ( that would be so crazy tbh)

The possibilities are actually endless here. I think their relationships will be tested. I think were going to see how strong they are together. (Jelly)

s3 will be a mainly a jelly season , I think bonrad will have moments as well but more of the kind where conrad’s like “ Im happy for you” (actual character development)

I think Conrad will have a new partner and it might be going well like picture perfect ( at least from the outside) and Belly might get upset ( not because she misses being with con but because she might feel a lil silly for still letting him get to her like he does)

She might get conflicting feelings that resurface because lets face it Con put her through some trauma so ofc she is allowed to feel a certain way even if she is in a loving relationship.

I think were going to maybe see new sides of everyone because were reaching that in-between weird young adult/ still feeling like a teen stage. I think everyone going to have something happen to their characters that’s different from s1 and s2, essentially s3 will be a set up season a clam before the storm to take a break from how emotional s2 was.

If Jenny Han truly wants a bonrad endgame shes goinging to have break up jelly so badly they cant come back from it and that would be so so sad to see. Cons they spent most of s2 rebuilding everything.

( This is not what Susan would want either, her wish is that they all stay together )

Because if Belly were to get back with Con after everything after s2 I think that would be worse than her being with a completely different partner because of their history.

UNLESS there is a long as hell break for them all. Something would need to happen that major that splits the group apart. And may after some years after everyone went their separate ways they all rekindle, Conrad comes back as a better person etc . Thats the only way it could work ( But tbh even thats a reach)

So as of right now anything is bound to happen but what I do know for sure is that s3 ( if we get it) at least for the first half of it is going to be so wholesome and cute. I cant wait to see an actual healthy on screen relationship for once 😭

hiiii <3 what are your all time favorite bls and why? i need to fill up my to-watch list asap

oh, this ask made me ecstatic to the point i considered one of my moots sent it cause they know giving recs makes me happy 😄

what I'd constitute as faves isn't necessarily what i would usually recommend, to moots i mostly suggest shows and movies that i find unique in some way and that have left a good impression on me like i will knock you, kimi no koto dake mite itai, word of honor, fukou kun, the untamed, docchi mo docchi, seven days, itsay, msp, vice versa etcetcetc. it's not necessarily about perfect writing or acting even, it's about the piece of media provoking either lots of thoughts, emotions or both, having at least one unique trait i associate with it and just being enjoyable despite (or because of) its flaws! so that's the type of media i usually enjoy sharing with others.

now, it's infinitely easier for me to give recs based on any other criteria but "my personal faves" is such a subjective category (that im not even sure exists) that i had to cheat a bit - i went off of what couples make me go feral, what emotions the show title evokes and if i've revisited certain scenes. i don't do full rewatches for the most part but i sometimes go back to watch the main couples (the exception being waantul in between us, i know their scenes a hundred times better than winteam's lol) and most of the shows listed here have been revisited at least once 😗

Love Is Science? - NOT a bl, the pair in question are the second couple; i personally went through every episode looking for their scenes and then went through the cut on yt (and rightfully so, quite a few scenes were missing in that); i'm recommending you smth this inconvenient because i love Mark and Ou Wen so much. their personalities (they have personality for daysss), the chemistry (the hanger scene), their love and support for each other make me giddy. they carry their part so well you don't need much else, just watching them interact is enough. going through gifs now i got reminded of just how amazing the development of their relationship is to me. they're a delight and a half, enjoy them flustering each other 💖

To My Star Season 2: Our Untold Stories - now, i'm aware you have to see s1 first but when it comes to who makes me go feral, it's definitely Seojoon and Jiwoo and this happened mostly because of season 2, i didn't care for them much originally. this season explored an aspect of relationships i don't think i've seen explored anywhere else in a way that makes me still get in my feels whenever anything bout the show comes across my dash. it's angsty but so worth it. my boys have intense personal issues and even more intense love for each other, their personalities, way of thinking and chemistry are fascinating to me. the cuteness mixed with the heavier plot, the pacing, the smart writing, it's so nice. side note, binging both seasons at once wouldn't be that big of a challenge timewise in case you don't want a breather in between 😊 (gif from s1 because you can't watch them separately anyways)

Kieta Hatsukoi - a sweet light romcom for the most part, very entertaining, all of the characters are soo loveable, one of my all time fave girls in bl is here and she's everything <3 in regards to manga accuracy, the main events are all there but the order is all switched around yet the story still makes perfect sense! it's funny, it's sweet, Aoki and Ida are such an interesting pair and it's lovely seeing them figure out how to navigate this unexpected relationship

We Best Love: No. 1 For You - it's such a must watch! the passion these two have for each other and the chemistryyy will make you overlook the sheer absurdity of some of the plot; i also loved the 2 season format where the second season feels well planned, it's almost like one whole season cut in half. the emotional journey that Shu Yi and Shi De go on is so (melo)dramatic but also very touching because Sam and Yu act those emotions OUT, it's a pleasure just watching them interact (also Shu Yi is one of the few brats i adore dearly and i think it's not only because of the writing but Yu's incredible portrayal of the character)

Bad Buddy - i wasn't able to appreciate it for its wit because it was basically my first thai bl, i had no idea what expectations it was defying. nevertheless, i fell in love with it because it stands so well on its own! it's very funny, heartbreaking at times (reading analyses and meta on here made me realise how heavy the premise actually is) and insanely romantic (it caters to my idea of romance so well, the pining and protectiveness and flirting and devotion and-); also Pat and Pran have some amazing communication and mutual understanding, their bond is truly endearing and makes my heart ache if i think about it a bit too long

KinnPorsche - when it comes down to it, i am a very basic person. this show is just a ride, you gotta watch it for the pure entertanment value. there's always smth happening, that's for sure 😄of course chemistry, ofc handsome men all over the place yadayada but it'd be just that if not for the insane plotlines and humour, if you just accept that anything goes, you can have a blast with this show (but also hurt beautiful men finding comfort and love in a world of pain and betrayal>>)

Where Your Eyes Linger - though I can't make myself rewatch the heavier scenes, i love this one, the premise, the execution, it's all to my taste, the longing between these two is palpable (side note: i was getting emotional while searching for a gif but a bunch of the results were porn gifs so i was taken out of my feels multiple times lmao)

Utsukushii Kare - I'm way more normal about them now than before but this show truly makes you feel so many things, it's so smart and fantastic. Hira and Kiyoi's journey is beautiful and it embodies what i love seeing from japan's productions. they're just two lovely guys who are perfect for each other and shouldn't be let anywhere near the dating pool ❤️

Semantic Error - man, i love me some enemies to lovers, especially when both leads are Fools™️ for each other. the humour and pacing, the colourful side characters, Jaeyoung's charisma, his determination contrasting Sangwoo's inner battle..and, I know I'm becoming repetitive, the chemistry! there's a reason my guys won awards js

The End of the World with You - this show drove me insane, it's more of a one-time watch imo but i'm saying this because I was very focused on the main couple and they were what kept me watching (plus the suspense of course); it's a heavy heavy premise with the most controversial couple on this list but somehow it felt very light and exciting for the most part. I think their unconventional surroundings account for it, you don't get the typical chaos an apocalyptic show would display, it kind of feels calm even and it allows you to focus on the interpersonal relationships between the characters rather than on the expected terrors. the show fascinated me with the amazing acting and the dynamic between Ritsu and Masumi, I have a special spot for them <33 (no photo cause the limit was reached lol)

because deciding on faves is hard i'll leave this list at 10 shows, consider these just 10 of the many shows that are important to me in some way 💓

TURN-89: The Hell Kaiser vs Darkness Fubuki

Ryou, now the Hell Kaiser, has returned to the Academia to take part in GeneX.  His best friend Fubuki, scoping out the situation, decides to confront the Hell Kaiser, hoping to return the favor after he had helped save him from his fall to the dark side before.  At last, Fubuki and Hell Kaiser begin their duel, and Fubuki intentionally uses the power of Darkness, summoning Red-Eyes Black Dragon.  Meanwhile, the Hell Kaiser uses...

TURN-90: The Academia’s Pride

Chronos and Vice-Principal Napoleon, anxious about the Academia’s reputation worsening as their students lose to Pro Duelists, get certain characters to take part in GeneX--as their secret weapons.  Meanwhile, Junko and Momoe were dueling the Pro Duelist Sommelier Parker, and just as they were about to surrender their tough bout, Asuka, thought to have entered the Society of Light, appears.  Asuka then takes over Junko and Momoe’s duel and takes on the Sommelier.

Episodes 89 and 90 are a good time; 89 explores more of Ryou’s personality shift (and how sinking so low fighting with his ideals and then discarding them to actually think of winning now has him obsessed with the feeling that comes with it) and the new Cyberdark deck he took from Samejima, along with showing that Darkness is still very much around despite his defeat to Judai in S1 (mainly because for some reason Fubuki kept the card he was trapped in around, though I suppose logically to avoid Darkness potentially getting to someone else lol) which’ll come into play again in Season 4 (better than never, really).  90′s a fun time with more of the tournament currently going on playing out, we get to see Taizan and Motegi again which is nice, and Asuka shows some of her pre-SoL personality is still in there, like with Manjoume.  Also nice to hear Camula’s Theme again as she takes out Sommelier Parker.  The flashback scene with Ryou and Fubuki is also nice (”Just as this lighthouse guides ships at night, everyone’s feelings were the glow that brought me back”) and it would’ve been nice to get that properly after Fubuki recovered, but it works well here.

Editing-wise, there wasn’t too much to fix in 89, though there was a unique one that I wanted to do my best to fix; 90 saw a bunch of card fixes along with one or two quality-of-watching fixes, plus a big translation edit revamping one of the first on-screen ones I’d done when I first subbed episode 90 back around 2012 that looks pretty good now, if I may say so myself, lol.  Details below the cut, as usual, for the interested!

(As a side-note, Sangre Guerrero in 90 is... interesting; the credits list his name as “サンブレ・ゲレロ”/“sanbure guerrero”/”Sombre Guerrero,” which is what I’d originally used, but then I saw Crunchyroll go with “Sangre,” which isn’t what the katakana would back up [”sangure”]--but the more I listened to Manjoume saying his name, the more it did in fact sound like “Sangre.” It wouldn’t be the first time I’d run into a typo in the ending credits--a lot of the animation staff tend to have typos on their names every so often, so it takes me a fair bit of looking into which spellings end up sticking later in the series to decide on consistency--but it was a potential first for a character name, and Japanese Wikipedia and most sites, along with Yugipedia, had spelled it as “sanbure” pulling from the credits.  Unfortunately, he doesn’t have a profile on the official YGO site, and I don’t think he’d had one on any official Japanese one to verify, being such a minor character.  But “sangre” would make sense given his “hot Latino blood” line [”sangre” being Spanish for “blood”], so, given all that, I went with “Sangre” as well. 

Also, I did end up finally catching that the name for Junko’s VA is Tomomi Yachi and not Tomomi Taniuchi as I’d been using per AnimeNewsNetwork; I was hoping that “Yachi” could’ve been a more recent change, but I clicked into her JP Wikipedia page and saw her blogs going back to the time GX was airing in the mid-00s referencing “Yachi,” and Yugipedia does have “Yachi” too, so... going with that now.  I might decide to revise her other episodes, but having lost my OP/EN credit sub files for S1 and early S2, and given she only finally spoke again in 90 after not doing so for... over 30 episodes, I might just end up leaving it.)

Anywho, enjoy, folks--91 and 92 are on tap for next time, ft. our Grim Reaper one-hit card-slinging-slasher one-off, and Pegasus actually dueling as Chronos and Napoleon duel him for a job worrying they might be fired; should be fun to revisit!

Fixes/Edits! (89)

As Fubuki and Ryou are about to begin dueling, they jump together on a split-screen to turn on their Disks and shout, “Duel!”--but just before Fubuki’s starts to turn on, there’s one frame (held still for a few frames) where it’s not fully drawn in its off state; fixed by painting in the rest in Photoshop, then throwing the fixed frame into the footage in Sony Vegas.

Later, once Fubuki lets Darkness consume him thinking it’s the only way to help Ryou now, Ryou brings back Cyberdark Edge using Call of the Living Dead; Darkness!Fubuki notes the futility of it when facing his Red-Eyes Darkness Dragon, and Ryou clicks into a split-screen to surprise him by summoning another new Monster in Cyberdark Keel, but a few things happen here--mainly, once Ryou clicks into his split-screen with Fubuki, the entire shot keeps panning to the right towards Fubuki.  Then, a few frames before Fubuki reacts to Keel, it shifts downward and to the right, and as Fubuki’s saying, “Another new Monster?”, the shot keeps panning towards him, before the split-screen then splits apart, but not before we get a quick frame of them splitting into green before the right whooshing background’s in there in the next frame to lead into Keel being summoned.  As I hadn’t worked on a fix to a split-screen error like this yet and thinking I might not be able to do too much, I initially mitigated it by using Vegas to fix it such that the shot stopped moving once Fubuki started reacting, repositioning three frames of his face and lip-flaps (closed, semi-open, and open) and masking them onto a still, recycling as needed to match his original flaps before letting the split-screen split out--but I was inspired on Friday to give it more of a try, and I think it came out nicely after 3-4 total hours late Friday night and early yesterday, lol. 

In addition to what I first did there, I went and first took the starting pan of Fubuki as he notes the futility of the move and moved it slightly so that Fubuki’s final position in the pan, before Ryou clicks into the split-screen, matches the position I had him in just before he reacts which I’d kept him still at--but doing this left a bit of the shot, along the top and right, unaccounted for with missing pixels; to deal with that, I used the aforementioned frame of Fubuki’s final position and redid that initial panning with it by keyframing it for most of its 105 frames, then put that in a layer under the repositioned pan--this allowed it to fill in the rest of the shot seamlessly, so Fubuki and the background were fully moved.  Then, after Ryou clicks in, I masked in a still of him prior to holding up Keel over Fubuki, then masked in and repositioned his rising hand with the card, along with his face and lip-flaps which I recycled as needed; this made it so Ryou held up Keel and said his line while everything else in the shot stays still.  I applied some additional masking over these layers during the split-screen to keep their hair and the backgrounds behind them consistent, too.  There’s still a slight amount of movement for the 5-10 frames of Fubuki reacting that I couldn’t edit out, but all the previous editing combined with what I’d done before made this shot much more consistently still overall. (Hopefully that makes sense, lol.) Also fixed the quick green-bg frame error.

Fixes/Edits! (90)

For the hardsub, as I detailed here, I took the computer screen Samejima’s scrolling through as he laments how only some of the students are winning their GeneX duels, showing how Judai and the others are doing on that front, and freshly translated it; as mentioned up top, this is a revamp of one of my earliest on-screen translation edits, necessarily redone because, for some reason, I thought it smart to save the original edit with Samejima’s line hardsubbed onto it... but also given the difference in video quality with the DVDRip I used here, lol.  Where initially I mainly used Sony Vegas to manipulate the existing footage to get things blanked, borrowing from how the dub wiped the text in spots, to then add the translated text in Aegisub, this time I used Photoshop exclusively to blank the Japanese text and then add the new English text, after first stitching together the entire screen with everyone’s profiles, using Sony Vegas to redo the scrolling or touch up for consistency a little as needed.

Also for the hardsub, for the scene just after the title card as Samejima scrolls from Misawa’s profile to Saiou’s, I was able to get that freshly translated as well, as detailed in the update to the post I linked in #1 above. (I also created this video to showcase both edits, as well as mockups I did of what the English dub could’ve done if they wanted to translate it vs what they actually did [blank all the text but mysteriously leave empty name boxes intact] and comparing them to my initial edits from 2012.)

As Chronos and Napoleon run to see Taizan duel with Mathematica, we see the current status of their duel with their LP counts, but while Taizan has Big Shield Guardna out in Defense Mode on his field, his card under it is facing Mathematica as if in Attack Mode; fixed by first making a proxy, then using AfterEffects to put it in place in Defense Mode on one frame during the panning shot, with the effect box facing us the viewer, and then masking Big Shield Guardna on top of it--once done, I took that frame into Sony Vegas and redid the panning shot with it, masking in the LP counter on top as needed.

After activating Illegal Summon and summoning Middle Shield Guardna to Taizan’s field, Mathematica has Taizan summon a Monster to his field for its second effect, and he goes for Drone; as it gets summoned, its card is missing on Mathematica’s Disk.  Fixed by using AfterEffects to first put a proxy I made for it in place on his second Monster Zone before the DEF counter covers it, brightening it as the light from Drone’s summoning reaches it, and exporting that; I then exported a single frame of it in that position, which I threw into Vegas, where I redid the slow zoom that happens here as he activates Death Calculator with it, and combined it all.

Some seconds later, as Mathematica activates Transistor the Survey Warrior’s effect (tributing Drone to attack Taizan directly), a few things happen: 1) a repeat of #3 happens with Defense-Mode Drone, whose card under it is facing Taizan as if in Attack Mode, and 2) Taizan has the just-summoned-to-his-field Middle Shield Guardna where Big Shield Guardna should be on his Disk, in Monster Zone 4.  Fixed in two parts: 1) I used AfterEffects to apply a proxy for Drone under it in Defense Mode (name box facing our left) for a frame and masked Drone on top of it, then taking that frame into Vegas to redo the panning shot here with it, masking Big Shield Guardna and his shield over it and fading it out as Drone gets tributed and disappears; 2) luckily, as this shot gets recycled a bit later, and it correctly has Middle Shield Guardna and Big Shield Guardna in Zones 2 and 4, respectively, on his Disk there, I was able to use that and use Vegas to reposition it and then redo the panning here with it before just masking them out--though the repositioning meant that Big Shield Guardna wasn’t fully on Taizan’s Disk (as I had to move it a bit upward, leaving empty pixels under), but I used AE to slap a proxy on in one frame, then redoing the pan again using that frame to handle that.  Combined both parts in Vegas, and voila. (Quite a bit of fun keyframing involved here as a result, but the result looks good)

After summoning Drawler, Taizan uses its effect to add his hand back to his deck, but two quick things happen: 1) there’s a few frames of his Disk showing where Big Shield Guardna is missing from his Disk (Fixed in AfterEffects by just slapping a Defense-Mode proxy in Monster Zone 4), and 2) for a quick frame as he lifts his head, the pupils of Taizan’s eyes are black and not white (fixed by just recoloring them in Photoshop, then mixing the fixed frame into the footage in Vegas)

Later, during Motegi’s duel with Sangre Guerrero, the Latino Pro Duelist [what Elvis impersonation] tries to get Motegi to feel worried, but notes how he’s taking the fun out of it for him by being so chill; as the split-screen between them while this happens starts to split, there’s a quick frame where the border is missing from Guerrero’s side.  Fixed in Vegas by masking in his side of the split in the next frame with the border and repositioning it into place.  I also re-slid his side to fix some coloring issues I noticed with him.

Later, once Asuka and Sommelier Parker are dueling, after Asuka summons Benten, Parker notes that she would be “medium-bodied” as a wine compared to his “full-bodied” Bacchus, before the Parker/Bacchus split-screen splits to show Judai, Shou, and Manjoume, as Shou turns to Manjoume wondering what the “bodied” talk is about--but two little things happen here: 1) a frame before the split starts to split, there’s a little flicker along the border (fixed just by holding the previous frame over this one), and 2) after Shou turns to Manjoume, after he says his line, he jitters and turns slightly from Manjoume, where he stays until after Manjoume’s line, when he and Judai turn back to the duel, but this jitter desyncs Shou’s movement from Judai’s there (fixed by first masking Shou so that he stays in his pre-jitter position, then using that jitter position to make it so he and Judai start turning back to the duel at the same time).

9-11 here happen in the same scene, but I can’t do sub-bullets on Tumblr here, so I’ll split it into a few points for readability.  As Asuka tells Parker that Cyber Tutu’s about to end the duel, he slides in on a split-screen to question that, causing Asuka to react in surprise before the split splits out to show a drunk dizzy Cyber Tutu--except Asuka’s side of the split takes a frame longer to leave the screen, as they started splitting a bit unevenly.  Fixed by using Vegas to mask and redo the split-out slightly so that the two start splitting more evenly, letting Asuka’s split leave the screen with Parker’s.

After we see drunk Cyber Tutu, the two’s split-screens start sliding back in, but Parker’s is uneven with Asuka’s; fixed in Vegas by masking his full split and repositioning it to redo it slightly.

Once back on their split-screen, after Parker comments that Cyber Tutu has had a bit too much of his Bacchus Banquet’s sake, they start to split out to show the Bacchus Banquet card behind them on Parker’s field, but the border that should be on Asuka’s side is disconnected from her.  Fixed in Vegas by masking out the border and attaching it to Asuka, masking in the new scene behind them to wipe it away from the middle.

A bit later, Parker has Magna Mutton attack Cyber Tutu, but Asuka has her Holy Life Barrier Trap to avoid damage; as she gets ready to activate it amidst Magna Mutton’s attack, she’s missing Cyber Tutu in Monster Zone 4 on her Disk. Fixed in AfterEffects by just slapping a proxy on.

During her last turn, after Asuka uses Fulfillment of the Contract to bring back Idaten, as she explains that her effect lets her re-use a Magic Card in her Cemetery (going for Pot of Greed), along with missing Cyber Tutu in Zone 4 of her Disk again, a bit of an oddity happens here in how her Idaten card starts to... slide off her Disk, lol.  There’s also a quick frame where the Pot of Greed she’s grabbing from her Cemetery disappears in the slot before it reappears there as she moves her Disk.  Fixed by first using AfterEffects to put Cyber Tutu in place, which I then repositioned during the light zoom-out in AE, then in Vegas holding Idaten in place by masking its Monster Zone into another layer on top for the rest of the shot, and then holding Pot of Greed in place for that one frame.

During the preview for episode 91, an error happens as the Blue student Tachibana is dueling gets impacted by an attack he made in which he has a Magic Card in his Disk’s Monster Zone 4.  This was fixed in 91 proper, as it’s Armed Samurai -- Ben Kei there, so I fixed this by using that footage in Vegas and masking in the Japanese “Preview” text over it, using a fair amount of feathering so it blended in.

12 Days of Christmas (8/12)

WARNING! GRAPHIC STORY!! (tw gore, violence, drug use).

Somethin’ about this reminds of the times he went ballistic and hit hospital staff. But before getting to that, the backstory:

    John relapsed after taking pill killers for his eye surgery, in 1981. He wrote, “then I kept taking them after I didn’t need to.” His wounds from the ostrich attack gave justification to use, but after recovering, he wrote, “I knew I was taking them because I liked the way they made me feel.” Thus, he was back on amphetamines and drinking wine to take the edge off.

He’d carry on this way until his European tour. At his lodging, in Nottingham, England, Nov 10, 1983. In which the “spider bite” incident took place. John was convinced a wood panel could turn into a Murphy bed. He tore at the wall, likely, Victorian-era splinters embedded into his right hand. His blood-soaked paw roused him from his delusion, then in bed that night, he hallucinated a big spider biting his injured hand.

    After the tour, John wrote, “my hand was just a giant ball of infection.” He’d checked into the Baptist Hospital, in Memphis, Tennessee. Where internal bleeding was found in his mid-section. They removed his duodenum, parts of his stomach, spleen, and several feet of intestine. John felt he’d be in the hospital for a while, before his first surgery, so he hid a stash of drugs with him. Percodan, amphetamines, and a fifty-dose card of Valium.

Thinking he was so clever with his new hiding spot, the Valium card underneath his bandages. As he wrote, “over the freshly sutured incision on my belly.” His condition turned for the worse, medical staff didn’t know why, until he awoke to show them the dressing. Half the pills had dissolved into the wound. As John wrote, “I don’t know if it was the Valium’s fault but that was a horrible wound; it took months to heal properly.”

    Following recovery, he wrote, “I was about as high as I could be anyway, lost in intensely vivid hallucinations. I half wrecked the ICU, upsetting IV poles and doing all kinds of damage, because I just had to make somebody understand about the commandos; they’d gotten into the hospital and were setting their charges all around the room.” He was in danger of his guts falling out and onto the floor, but he didn’t care. He was in a nightmare, only to be given more morphine, which John wrote. “They didn’t know who they were dealing with, or what: more dope just made me more crazy.”

    While visiting Waylon Jennings after undergoing a triple bypass, on December 14, 1988. John had a check-up that day, and 24 hours later, he learned he’d also be having open heart surgery. The procedure went on Dec 19, two-and-a-half hours, and a 90% blockage to the main coronary artery. It was also during this surgery John had a close call and claimed to speak with his friend Roy Orbison, who had passed on Dec 6, of that same year. He also smoked cigarettes half an hour prior to the surgery, and you’re not supposed to do that.

Days after the surgery, he endured a bad bout of pneumonia. On a particularly restless night, he thought he’d gone to Heaven, but when awaking he was mad to not be in Heaven. So, he went crazy. He trashed around the room, pulling the tubes connected to his arm, even wrestling hospital staff. As quoted in Ron Handelman’s book of John, “An article in the Nashville Banner suggested that the doctors might have been to blame for over-medicating him.” Which could be true, but it’s not like they knew he’d rage out.

Basically, he turned into that Yeti in the clip above! From Robot Chicken (From S1/EP 3: Nightmare Generator). Nothin’ like starting the New Year with a story, even if messed up and gross.

How I think each of the s1 and s2 Empires characters would react to seeing each other.

False is kinda terrified of Pearl, but overall thinks she's cool. Pearl wants False to be her new sparring buddy (like, the woman built a machine to murder giant hunks of metal and wears clothes she pilfered from a corpse, of course Pearl would love her). False doesnt understand that this is a statement of affection and is even more terrified.

The Scotts are just the 'Misery and CPR' meme. Elf Scott keeps talking about his demon brother and tragic backstoryTM, and the Chromia king just goes "oh yea a magic skull stole my eyeball and a wizard gave me a new one.' Eventually they start talking about their bfs and become friends ('my husband rescued me from a dungeon so I built him a cave full of his favorite things' 'nice. My boyfriend just shows up randomly and gives me wood').

The Jimmys absolutely confuse the hell out of each other. The Codfather just off-handedly talks about his traumatic past in between bouts of how awesome his sister and brother-in-law are. He's a god and totally unbothered by it, while the Sheriff keeps grumbling about God calling him a toy when he is Not A Toy. They introduce each other to the other Norman.

The Sausages just point at each other like the spiderman meme. They joke about their trauma while still smiling. They coo over Bubbles together. The protector of Sanctuary talks about Eddie and Hermes. The king of Mythland talks about his little siblings and how much he loves them; he also mentions his best friend who sounds suspiciously similar to the sunflower goddess...

The Joels HATE each other. God Joel keeps making fun of the Mad King for being short and made of clay and he just laughs his ass off, doesnt acknowledge him, and rants about how amazing his fish wife is. God Joel feels insecure and angry, the Mad King is offended because someone is ignore how AMAZING AND WONDERFUL his wife is.

The Pixls have a wonderful afternoon drinking and spilling tea. They discuss philosphy and history, they lovingly make fun of Jimmy, they compliment each other's empires.

Shrub and Shelby are instant friends. Shrub is kinda scared of Shelby because witches could mean bad news, but Shelby instantly introduces Tortoise and all goes well. They talk about their different magic, Shelby gives a whole bundle of potions to the wolves. They talk about how cute Katherine is and mom-friend Joey.

The Joeys respect each other. They arent that close, but they think each other are cool. They fight over if Katherine or Xornoth is better; neither wins but they have fun coming up with compliments for the people they like (they also talk as if said objects of affection love them back).

The Katherines go monster hunting together. Overgrown Katherine talks about her awesome gnome gf. Glimmer Grove Katherine complains about her suitor that cant seem to understand that she isnt a pirate.

At first, the fWhips bond over chaos and destruction. 'I put wardens in half the server's bases to thank them for coming to my wedding' 'I created a ravine.' All goes well until Jimmy gets brought up. Count fWhip complains about the whole 'board of dead salmon' thing, and Goblin fWhip jumps to his defense. They get into a big ol fight and make up a little while later.

The Gems, while amicable, dont really like each other. Wizard Gem thinks Princess Gem's a scardy cat, and Princess Gem thinks Wizard Gem is too intense and a little scary. They do have fun talking about fWhip and Sausage though.

Mayor Lizzie is both a little intimidated by the ocean enpress, and also thinks she's super cool. She's an actual strong, tall, powerful god (unlike the one from Stratos). She is a little scary, though, cause of the army of axolotls and the whole water thing. The ocean empress thinks she's nice (and kinda funny); Mayor Lizzie really reminds her of her friend with his empire of cats before he got corrupted...

Nova loved alcohol. It made everything so much better. Like, yeah, maybe Kie was ignoring her for reasons she couldn't even begin to understand, and she didn't like Denver, her new Touron friend, as much as she initially thought, and John B and Sarah were probably dead and Mikey was blowing them off to hang out with Rafe fucking Cameron, and her stupid mom kept calling her but it was fine. Because she was drunk as fuck and not thinking about any of that.

JJ, Edgar and Pope were sitting beside her on the couch that someone had brought into the woods years upon years ago. Well, JJ and Pope were sitting next to her, Edgar was in JJ's lap, pretending to be annoyed as JJ tried to get him to make out. Kie was nowhere to be found, locked away in her house by her parents, like fucking Rapunzel.

Kie hated Rapunzel. She thought it was stupid that she was saved by a prince when she could've just used her long ass hair to get down on her own. Nova was indifferent because her favorite princess was the princess from The Princess and The Pea. She wondered what Denver's favorite princess was. Or Pope's.

"Pope, who's your favorite princess?" She turned to him, watching him sip slowly from his red solo cup. Whatever was in it made his face scrunch up in disgust.

"Like Disney princess, or real life princess, or–"

She cut him off. "Fictional princesses."p

He took another drink, hating it as much as the first sip. "Uh, probably Ariel from The Little Mermaid."

"Solid," she said. He smiled into his cup. "What about you, JJ?"

He pulled away from where he was not so subtly kissing Edgar's neck. "Brave, from Brave. Her bow n arrow was sick."

Pope scoffed. "Her name is not Brave."

JJ rolled his eyes. "Why else would they call the movie that?"

"Do you think Rapunzel's name is Tangled?"

Nova wasn't in the mood for their banter. "How bout you, Eddie?"

Edgar hummed in thought. "Dulcinea del Toboso from Don Qui—" He cut himself off with a yelp as JJ sunk his teeth into his neck. He elbowed him in the shoulder. "Ow! I was speaking."

JJ nodded. "Yeah, and you sounded so hot, I had to do something about it."

Nova couldn't see it because of the lack of light around them but she knew Edgar was blushing.

"Behave," he said, unable to keep the affection from his voice.

Leaning in for a kiss, JJ practically purred, "Make me."

Nova gagged. "Can you go be gross somewhere else? I just want to talk about princesses!"

Edgar pulled away. "Sorry, Nov." JJ, obviously very unapologetic, just glared at her.

"Isn't Dulcinea made up?" Pope asked.

Edgar gasped. "You've never read Don Quixote?"

They launched into a discussion about whatever the hell Don Quixote was, talking about knights and horses, and stopped paying Nova any attention.

She sighed, alone with her thoughts again.

Maybe she should call Kie, just to see how she was doing? They were more on the friend side of their frenemy situation now, it wouldn't be that weird.

But it would still be kind of weird.

Her phone buzzed in her pocket, and her heart rose like it was in an elevator.

Except when she checked her phone it was just JJ texting her and not Kie having somehow read her mind.

She knew it was just the alcohol in her system, but red hot rage flooded her veins. She got to her feet, turning to face him. "Fuck you."

As she walked away, she heard Pope ask, "What'd you do?"

Somehow she ended up at The Chateau, because she always ended up at The Chateau. She climbed into John B's bed, inhaling the scent of his stupid cologne. She used to hate it, but now she missed it more than anything.

"You should be here," she said into the darkness. "You should be here with me, telling me and JJ to stop fighting and dunking on Edgar and Pope for nerding out in the middle of a party and making fun of Tourons together. A Kook chick tried to buy weed off me and I didn't even get to make fun of her with you!"

She hugged his pillow to her chest. "Fuck you, John B. And fuck Sarah for her beautiful, giant heart. And Kiara for being the worst person in the world and refusing to leave my brain. And JJ for being a dick. And Edgar for being in love with him. And fuck Big John most of all for disappearing and getting us in this mess in the first place."

Her rage had melted into sadness and that melted into exhaustion, and before she knew it she was asleep, drooling on John B's sheets.

It didn't matter, they were probably dirty anyway.

I'm mostly good but I wouldn't call it happy in every case. Being happy really's kinda rare. Since I live in NC and left Portland behind, yeah I guess I'm much 'happier'. But there's always room for improvememt. (bonus ask) But you seem happy to me? That's because of my face. I got a happy face. Doesn't mean I'm always the happy cute guy you see in me. Anyways: yet, I appreciate it when I'm also not happy — See, I don't think u can achieve to be the happiest either. There'll always be times u get kicked off of your rainbow shootin' unicorn, u know.

Show me one person in NC who's not? Everyone's angry. Not all the time, and I believe many hide it, so they're practically lyin'. I get angry, too, at times. But I tend to vent quickly and not wasting any more time with it because I got better things to do.

Monterey Bay. Scenic coastline, almost looks ike some neat painting. I used to play a lot at the beaches and swam in the ocean when I was a kid. Area is thrivin' with wild life. There isn't one day I'm not thinking about it. Once I'm gettin' tired of the city life, I'm gonna buy me one of these fairytale cottages and spend the rest of my days sitting on my porch watching the sun setting beyong the ocean.

Well, this is NorCal. It's mostly Summer throughout the year. Even Portland didn't get much of a Winter thanks to global warming shit noone could stop yet. Morning or afternoon?

Often get to enjoy mornings since I mostly work at night and come home or finish a job when it's about to get morning. Yet, I've always loved afternoons way more. The moment u can just watch the sun getting lower until it's disappearing behind the horizon has always been and is very peaceful to me.

Are you in love?

I defintiely got that strong butterfly feeling again I haven't felt in a long while. Feels great!

Do you believe in love at first sight?

Nuh-uh. I believe it's attraction that's drivin' people mostly when they think they are in love from zero to hundred. Maybe there are exceptions, though, dunno. But for me — there's no "at first sight". It developes after time is what I can say from my experience.

Who ended your last relationship? 

I did. Personal issus I couldn't cope with. That's all you need to know. We're still very good friends. It's not easy that easy though.

Have you ever broken someone’s heart?

He told me I didn't, but I think I did. His eyes do tell me that.

Love or lust?  

I like both but lust always seems to be stronger, lingering deep inside, waiting to get into action. I've got a better understanding of it than love. The latter is unpredictable and hits you totally unexpected. But the two can go along well together if you got the right person at your side and keep both balanced.

Lemonade or iced tea?

Lemonade — always a good choice. Am I gettin' some now? Don't forget to put some gin into it for me, alright?!

Cats or dogs?

Send me all them doggos u got! I love them. -happiest face ever- They are the only animals that love you unconditionally. Cats would eat u if they were bigger than us for sure.

A few best friends or many regular friends? 

After Portland I went with "few best friends". The rest is only mutuals, too me. U need to be careful with whom you talk about personal stuff — especially in this city. True friends takes a while to find, though.

Can u stop askin' me 'this or that' stuff? It's both. Wild nights are a lot of fun but if I got someone I just wanna spend time alone with? — Fuck yeah! Nothing can beat a romantic night at home. I crave for that as well.

Where are we right now? Right – NIGHT City. More than half of the city sleeps at day and is awake around night, same goes for me.

I must admit I go for attraction in the first place and therefore intelligence does come a bit short in some cases. But it is also very important. So, both.

I prefer relationships, but hook-ups are nice, too — especially when you had enough of relationships for a while.

Was– best friend. Jackie — I still miss him. But Ryder, my team mate, is always there for me if I got somethin' on my mind. I met him about the same time as Jackie. We've been very close to each other for a while.

Who knows everything about you?

Jackie knew a lot about me. I would go that fare and say he'd know almost everything, yeah. But Jack's gone, so I'll pick Ryder. He might know almost as much about me as Jackie did. And I know he'll keep private things for himself. I know I can trust him.
