goh starter trio meta perhaps? i was ensnared by the goh-scorbunny parallel subpoint in the cubone meta bc i'm making myself unwell thinking about how scorbunny latching on to goh and goh latching on to ash.... but also more generally, sobble's whole thing and the absolute tearjerker drizzile evolution episode, and goh's weird ass dream about his rillaboom parents and then waking up to baby grookey clinging to his arm, you get it, i know you're galaxy brained about this

YESSS I AM *SO* GLAD YOU ASKED!!

so my tl;dr here is that all of the galar starters represent something about goh specifically relating to his childhood. their growth and eventual evolution (or lack thereof!) therefore serve to highlight his character development (as an aside, i think this is a very common theme in anipoke. ash's pikachu not evolving speaks to the fact that ash's growth isn't about becoming someone new but about staying true to himself and embracing a battle style that reflects the creative ingenuity that, in the early os, other characters mocked him for. similarly, dawn's piplup chooses not to evolve because it doesn't want to change how things are between them. does this not seem fitting for the partner of someone like dawn, who has always admired her mother so much that she never even considering doing something other than following in her footsteps? i'm sure there are other examples, but these seem to me the most obvious ones!).

let's break down each one, then!

scorbunny

when we meet scorbunny, goh is still determined that mew will be his first pokemon. this is a point of stubbornness that, while impressive and arguably kind of admirable, is frankly kind of stupid. how is he supposed to get to mew without any pokemon to help him? there's an interesting implication in this resolution, which jn004 and jn005 really highlight for us - goh isn't comfortable with having a pokemon. he knows a lot about them, is interested in researching them, but as far as the bond between pokemon and trainer goes, i don't think he feels prepared for that. it's easier to pick a target that is far from reasonably attainable for him at this point, especially since he does have some history with mew - didn't it take an interest in him? didn't it give him a reason to chase after it?

so meeting scorbunny, he's obviously not thinking about catching it. but he lies to the guy at the scone stand, in an interesting parallel to how scorbunny steps in to protect the nickit. he doesn't even seem to know why he does it. but just before that scene, he sees scorbunny wipe some of the dirt off its face. he doesn't get the whole story and connect all the dots until after, but i think he realizes then that scorbunny is trying to hide itself in some way. that it's performing as something it's not. and on some unconscious level, that motivates him to lie for it. after, we get this whole exchange, where the scone seller tells ash and goh the story

and this note is what makes goh get up and approach scorbunny and the nickit:

it's very symbolic that he wipes the mud off scorbunny's face. and then later, he even points out when they see it again that it looks better without all the mud covering it up - it looks more like itself. it's not pretending to be something it's not. goh wiping the mud off its face is him saying that he accepts it as it is. that being resigned to living a certain way just to fit in or just because that's how it's always been is pointless.

and i mean...even ash says in this scene that the things goh is saying are things he's only recently learned himself, right? goh denies it (and tbh when he says that he's always thought the world is big and anyone can explore it if they want to or whatever - i don't think that's untrue! i think it's just that, prior to meeting ash, he didn't have it in him to explore it), but ash has a point. and what goh is doing for scorbunny here is the same thing that ash did for him.

relatedly, scorbunny follows him, right? in the same way that goh "accepts" ash as his friend, scorbunny chooses goh as its trainer. goh recognizes that it travelled far for him, that it saw a vision of its future with him, and changes his mind about not catching it. i think the determination he saw in scorbunny to chase after its dreams resounded with him, because he's only just started doing the same thing. and his entire character is built around this idea of like, learning how to adapt and how to let other people help you find the courage to chase your dreams (and even to help you chase them). how could he possibly deny scorbunny the same thing?

but while scorbunny's enthusiasm helps motivate goh to chase his dreams, he is very flippant and dismissive, as we see when it learns ember and he says it doesn't matter, that scorbunny doesn't need to know a fire-type move and this gut-punch of a line, of course:

goh is someone who needs a lot of convincing to do things he doesn't think he'll be good at (or enjoy). he only joins project mew because gary goads him into it. he spends most of his life refusing to make friends, because he had one bad experience. he's a fairly black-and-white thinker, which makes sense considering his background. he doesn't really believe in change. he especially doesn't believe that people (or pokemon, in this case) can change their circumstances just through hard work and determination. as we see in jn003 with the ivysaur, he also doesn't think that it's anyone else's place to intervene and "help" others. if you can't change something, then don't. and there's no point in hoping it'll change on its own, either.

when scorbunny storms off here, his expression is interesting. this isn't the expression of someone being judgemental. it's the expression of someone who sympathizes.

he sees scorbunny trying so hard to do something he thinks it can't do and thinks that scorbunny's determination to change things is, if i had to guess, kind of immature. a lesson scorbunny will have to learn, whether it wants to or not. at first it's kind of endearing, but then he actually gets frustrated, because he feels like scorbunny's determination to learn ember is harmful to them both. here, there's a degree of "why won't you just trust that i know what's best for you?" for sure, but on a deeper level, i think that stems from a place of "can't you see that i'm just trying to protect you?"

...but obviously, all he really does is wind up lashing out and hurting scorbunny's feelings. he tells ash that he was trying to draw out scorbunny's strengths (and he was, by telling it to use moves it was already good at!), but ash points out that their values weren't aligned and that's kind of the opposite of strength when it comes to pokemon battling. so he reassesses the situation and finds a way to bring out scorbunny's strength that also aligns with what scorbunny wants. that compromise is what makes scorbunny evolve. it was the right call! but then raboot starts ignoring him.

and this is like. a running gag with scorbunny - goh gets distracted by other things and doesn't notice that it's trying to show him things. it happens when they meet and it happens again in this episode with its ember. we see something very similar with goh and his parents in jn032 when he's excited at the prospect of their vacation together, but when he tries to ask what they want to do, he turns around and find they're both asleep (and we see the flashback of something similar happening last time, too).

with raboot, in a lot of ways, goh is grappling with...himself. or at least, the person he was before he met ash - cold and distant, more interested in doing whatever he thinks is worth his time than in school, for example. so if goh saw his child self in scorbunny, he sees his more "adolescent" (i mean. he's still ten so still child, technically. but older child lol) self in raboot. and he actually responds to this in a way that's a lot like how we see his parents responding to him. in jn022, we see him

buy a bunch of apples for raboot, even though he thinks it doesn't need them (and is hurt when it doesn't let him have one, despite raboot seeming pleased that he bought them for it). compare to the device he shows horace in jn032, for example, which he says his parents built for him. or his six computer monitors. his parents reach him best through material means!

question why raboot hates him when it's not responsive to his overtures. contrarily, goh's parents don't think he hates them; they just automatically assume the worst case scenario (like in jn015 when he calls and they immediately wonder if he did something and got kicked out of the institute). but while that's their worst case scenario about him, raboot hating him is kind of goh's worst case scenario, right? it took him time to open up and accept scorbunny as his partner. now that it's evolved and is acting differently, he's terrified that he came to care for it only for it to leave him.

which leads to my last point here, which is that he doesn't actually ask what it wants. in this episode, he concludes that raboot would be happier without him. so he leaves it behind, but he never actually considers how it might feel. goh's parents do the same thing! they worry about him, but they don't share their concerns or ask how he feels. they just assume that he must feel a certain way and they adapt to compensate for that. but they never actually ask him what he wants.

this episode ends with him realizing that he hasn't been reacting to raboot's feelings so much as to his own, of course, and we see their relationship smooth out quite a bit. he's acknowledging that he's done things wrong, but also that it's not all his fault - and raboot's change in temperment is just a consequence of it evolving. they accept each other again and move on.

then, it evolves into cinderace and kind of opens up again more (though it's been doing that little-by-little since jn022). i think the fact that raboot and riolu evolve at the same time was a really cool move by the writers to kind of demonstrate how like...the relationship between ash and goh is reflected in the growth of their pokemon. they trained together! in a way they kind of grew up together! riolu, ash's token baby pokemon in jn, evolving at the same time as goh's starter feels like a very deliberate choice to highlight how ash helped goh's pokemon grow, too - through getting the ball rolling with how he helped goh grow as a person and a trainer. if that makes sense?

anyway, i don't have much to say about cinderace, other than that if he saw himself as a child in scorbunny and as an older child in raboot, then cinderace's level of openness and its enthusiasm aren't just reflexive of it getting back more of its scorbunny-esque personality - it also shows how goh has changed and has learned to embrace these parts of himself, now that he's in that "coming of age" age (well, for pokemon. he is still only ten lmao).

i think we see something similar with his other starters, though maybe a little less on the nose.

sobble

the drizzile episode, as you mentioned, is probably Thing here. but i think the theme with sobble is sort of that, where scorbunny maybe reflects more of the way goh thought about growing up and his aspirations (and how hard it was to open up to people), sobble more so mirrors his social experiences at school and with chloe.

VISUALLY, i think it's really telling that when goh catches sobble, he's...literally speaking to it from the other side of the water:

this whole episode (jn028) is about goh kind of...forcing sobble into positions it's not necessarily comfortable with, and not realizing that it's uncomfortable until it runs away from him. as we saw with raboot, this is a common theme with goh - but it's most obvious with sobble!

he realizes, of course, and says this:

even in flashbacks, goh never comes across as a shy kid. he doesn't exactly relate to sobble, but i think he's drawing a parallel here between them. he wasn't shy, but he was always on the "outside" - that's why he's so good at researching. he strives to see things as they are without getting involved. eventually, this is something that will make him a pretty thoughtful and strategic battler, though at this point he's still learning how to apply that to more than just research for the sake of research.

and then after sobble meets inteleon, we have these bits too:

goh's childhood motivations on the surface appear to be like...he doesn't want to bother with friends, because they aren't going to be able to serve a purpose for him. he isn't interested in making friends with anyone who is less into pokemon than he is. but after what happens with horace, it seems to get a little more complex, and then we have to wonder if his motivations really were that surface-level to begin with, or if, maybe, his policy of not making friends has always been a way for him to protect himself from betrayals like he experienced with horace.

we see chloe as early as jn001 trying to convince him to make friends, to no success. she doesn't even refer to herself as his friend - he doesn't seem to be willing to let her. he believes he doesn't need friends and is better off alone. but he doesn't realize until after meeting ash that his solitude is more of a self-imposed exile, in that it's hurting him more than other people. he can't improve as a person and reach his goals if he's too busy trying to protect himself to accept that he needs help from other people to do those things. so, again - i think he sees that side of himself in sobble. so it feels very impactful that he reaches out to help sobble become a better battler, but rather than forcing it to battle in a way that makes sense to him, he comes up with a way to have it train that plays off of its strengths of running and hiding.

and then, of course, there's the episode where sobble evolves, jn062. the writers themselves do most of the work here of drawing the parallel between goh's childhood and how drizzile is feeling, but i think it goes even deeper than that. drizzile is unhappy because it wanted to evolve into inteleon, not into drizzile. it's not comfortable in its own skin. and it doesn't necessarily want others to see it, because it feels like it's still growing and it's not ready yet. it kind of just...needs time to sulk and brood. drizzile runs away again, because it's not ready, and while they're looking for it, it's chloe who makes goh start thinking about when he was a kid, by saying this:

which prompts him to think about how he was searching for a "reason" for why drizzile was acting how it was, just like how adults used to demand reasons from him even when he didn't have them. and then of course we get this scene:

but i think he does on some level know why, because he talks immediately after this about how his parents weren't home and often felt lonely. he's more comfortable being alone. he's protecting himself. which is reinforced by the fact that he then tells drizzile this:

goh has a hard time putting his feelings into words, which is something we see throughout jn. he sees that drizzile is the same and this is a huge moment for him, because he's saying here that it doesn't matter what inspired its feelings; he understands it is experiencing those feelings and that's enough. he'll wait until it's ready to fully process them or whatever else it needs. drizzile kind of returns the favour when he starts crying here and it reaches up to brush away his tears, then disappears again.

overall, this episode does an amazing job of showing us how goh has become someone who actually acknowledges his and his pokemon's feelings - this is the only time we see him as a child where he's not doing something to try to ignore his feelings, or trying to walk away from them. in flashbacks, his back is often to his parents. in jn032, he gets upset, and then tries to cover his disappointment up immediately with anger and avoidance. the writers set this scene up so that we can see the reason behind his feelings clearly (just like we can see the reason behind drizzile's, even though goh and co. can't), but they rightly emphasize that goh's ability to analyze "why" he or his pokemon are feeling a certain way isn't always helpful. emotions are meant to be felt, not intellectualized. it's a good message, and a huge area of growth!

drizzile's evolution into inteleon also shows us how this acceptance translates into it eventually being comfortable enough to be who it wants to be. and the characters are impressed by it - it even earns kecleon's admiration, the same way that other inteleon earned its when it was a sobble. this is a pretty clear mirror with goh's social life, where he went from being this friendless outcast figure to someone with a lot of friends, and a great willingness to make more, as he became more comfortable and confident and willing to reach out to others.

and lastly,

grookey

the only one of the three that doesn't evolve, for reasons that aren't ever really made clear to us. but i think that as random (...and tone deaf) as his dream sequence at the start of grookey's debut episode is, it actually makes a lot of sense. in the original, the dream has camille and walker transformed into rillaboom, and goh is understandably freaked out. but i think the bigger, more symbolic thing is that even if it is a dream, his parents are the ones that foist grookey upon him. this does seem like a really weird choice, until you start thinking about the parallels, right?

in reality, grookey is team rocket's pokemon. the episode title "when a house is not a home" tells us that grookey obviously doesn't feel like it "belongs" there. but the episode doesn't open in team rocket's base. it opens in goh's apartment. and the part i didn't show in the drizzile scene above is when he says this:

the fact that goh was home alone a lot as a kid gets brought up fairly often. it implies that he kind of had to adopt this lone wolf persona, because there was no one else around to take care of him. he had to learn how to console himself and meet his own needs (hence why he's so combative about ash intervening with the ivysaur in jn003!), which is a lot of responsibility for a kid. grookey is handed to him like it's a responsibility in his dream, but then they bond. and he starts to appreciate having grookey around, to the point that he misses it when it returns to team rocket.

to me, the choice to have grookey not evolve kind of comes down to grookey being kind of...emblematic of goh's childhood. like, in his dream, grookey is this burden that's forced on him. someone he has to take care of, even though he isn't really prepared to do that. in reality, grookey is escaping from an environment that doesn't meet its needs. putting those two things together, i mean...that's just my reading of it, anyway. so grookey not evolving, and goh accepting grookey as it is - without any of the "growing up" analogs we have with cinderace and inteleon - is a way of showing that goh has come to terms with his childhood and that he accepts (and cherishes!) his childhood self. which he can only really do after he's done all the growing we see reflected in the evolutions of his other starter mons. (relatedly, grookey is the only starter of goh's who goh considers leaving with other mons in its evolution line. specifically, with two thwackey and their child, i.e. a family unit not unlike goh's!)

anyway! this is a very long post, so thanks for sticking with me if you did. hope my takes are as galaxy-brained as you hoped hehe

Hey same anon who send the first ask abt mikes hypothetical pokemon, to add to to it, what if they (the nickit) eventually had lost a foreleg and eye (to further mirror foxy) by the time it evolved into a thievul? Maybe William forces mike to train his pokemon against his own, (which are obviously stronger, hes had them for years and years), and whenever his lopunny is 'a little too rough', he makes it seem like it's mikes fault that his pokemon got hurt, and that he should be taking better care of them, etc. Makes mike make do at home with health potions and stuff when this happens becuase it would all be over for him if a nurse joy saw. The pokemon setting introducing new, inventive ways to be a shitty parent and pet owner fr

I hate you so much how could you fucking say this to me. Nickit doesn’t deserve this :(( But they are besties and I love them. Two abused dogs deemed criminal just for being alive.

To make shit even sadder, I really want to give Evan a Cubone. The Pokémon just fits him so well. And when Evan dies, I was thinking Cubone could carry Evan’s Fredbear instead of the bone. The fella also HATED Mike after Evan was killed and would try to attack him, but little Nickit would always defend him.

I hate this this is so sad and terrible.

I finished the teams for the matsu brothers and I’m too excited to wait to share em LOL. So here they are !! I might make slight adjustments to them in the future, and if anyone has any thoughts or ideas for the pokemon I chose for their teams I’d love to know🙏

this post could get long so teams and explanations for my au under the cut ‼️

First off we have; Osomatsu’s team !

Oso’s team consists of his flareon, munchlax, slakoth, and nickit! Osomatsu’s pokemon aren’t incredibly strong or high leveled, he doesn’t care much for pokemon battles unless it’s one of his brothers challenging him (though it’s rare). He cares for his pokemon quite a bit, though it may not seem like it, and their bonds are almost like those of silly and mischievous friends; with Nickit especially helping him steal food and snacks from his brothers.

Second, we have Karamatsu’s team !

Kara’s team consists of his (shiny!) sylveon, primarina, quaquaval, ceruledge, lucario, and hawlucha! Karamatsu has many gym badges, way more than all his brothers (except for Jyushi, but we’ll get to that later :p), he likes the thrill of battle and being challenged, though he cares slightly more about showing off how cool his pokemon are. Karamatsu likes pokemon that can match his energy or that he simply thinks are super cool, and his bond with them is close as he cares for them a lot. Most of all he just likes to make sure his pokemon are having fun too.

Third, we have Choromatsu’s team !

Like Osomatsu’s, Choro’s team is not full, nor does he care much for showing off his pokemon or battling. The gallade might come as a surprise, but I like to think that not long after his leafeon evolved he found a ralts which his brothers said looked “just like him”, and it’s been part of his team ever since. He cares for his pokemon, his leafeon and gallade are the only two that are above level 30, and it’s rare to ever seen him battle.

Fourth, Ichimatsu’s team !

Ichi’s team is simple, consisting entirely of cat like pokemon. He spends most of his time with his espeon and his skitty, as he’s closest with those two. Ichimatsu doesn’t like to make his pokemon battle, and more often than not avoids battling entirely. Even so, his espeon is pretty high leveled, having been trained with the help of Jyushimatsu just in case Ichi ever is unable to back out of a battle. He considers his little cats his companions.

Fifth, Jyushimatsu’s team !

It is clear that Jyushi loves to battle just as much as he loves his pokemon. I like to think that trainers usually underestimate him and think his pokemon are not to be worried about, that is until he brings out one of his best friends, gyaradose. He is the brother with the most gym badges and the strongest pokemon, not to mention their incredible bond with him and eachother. It is rare to see Jyushimatsu without his jolteon or his bolthund following right behind him, or his joltic sitting comfortably on his shoulder!

Last but not least, we have Todomatsu’s team !

Todomatsu is more often than not participating in pokemon shows, though it is not too uncommon to see him in battle to show off the skills of his adorable pokemon. He loves to post his cute companions on social media and praise them and glam them up with bows and accessories. It is best to not let this fool you though, for some of his pokemon are pretty strong!!

And that would be all! Before I finish I would like to mention that in my au, all the brothers received an eevee when they were younger as a gift from their parents, eevees that were color coded with nice ribbons around the tail, neck or ears as to tell them apart, just like the matsunos :p

Pokemon Journeys Episode 127 Review

Pokemon Journeys Episode 127. Let’s review:

This episode felt... odd.

On one hand, nice to see Cinderace get like a little in-show recap to his character growth. Was swell to see his three Nickit friends again and how they’ve grown themselves in Wyndon before evolving into Thievul. And it was cool to finally see Galarian Meowths and how they interacted with Team Rocket.

But on the other hand, MAN were there things I did not like in this episode.

First off, of course Leon’s gonna be the one to tame Eternatus. Yeah, sure, make this insufferable ass more perfect than he already is by having him apparently tame one of the tallest and deadliest Pokemon in existence to the point the chance of him using it in his final battle against Ash is more than likely. Fuck this character.

Second, considering Ash has defeated Steven and Cynthia and is about to face Leon, it’s honestly pretty weird the people of Wyndon aren’t giving him any sort of recognition.

Third, wow, so many Gen. 8 Pokemon finally being shown in the anime! Too bad only like half of them got any decent screen time. (and there’s still a ton not shown just fyi)

Fourth, once again, Cinderace, Inteleon, and Grookey all have a perfect opportunity to interact with each other, but just... didn’t. And since when was Grookey ever capable of fighting other Pokemon?

And fifth, honestly feels TOO convenient that Goh’s final Project Mew mission is going to take place around the same day as Ash’s fight against Leon.

Which brings me to my final discussion for this episode; Goh’s departure from Ash.

Look, I’m just going to give the anime the benefit of doubt and assume that Goh is going to come back sometime after Ash’s fight against Leon so that he could have a proper sendoff from Ash for when this season ends. HOWEVER, if this will indeed be the last episode Ash and Goh will have together, then BOY do I have some things say for it. Mark my words~

Anyways, giving this episode a 4/10. Only good parts were ones that involved Cinderace. Time to sleep for another freakin’ recap episode next week.

Has it ever bothered you that other Eevees were able to evolve/decide what to evolve into easier than you? How did you know your eeveelutions from the Lab Chloe got you from, were they your friends/family/fellow research subjects?

Cinderace: What? Human kids play in mud all the time!

Inteleon: I haven't met any other Sobbles or Drizziles... but I did have a talk with Goh's Frogadier shortly after he evolved. I told him I know what it feels like to not have the body you want and that he should train hard so that he could evolve into who he truly wants to be, someday...

He seemed confused, though. It's almost like he wasn't embarrassed to be stuck as a middle-stage evolution, or something! But that's crazy.

Lucario: I remember only being stuck in darkness...

Cinderace: Drama queen 🙄

Lucario: When Ash showed up there, I could sense his powerful aura and it intrigued me... though it was more the fact that I wasn't even trying to sense his aura. So I decided to stop loafing around and try to get out of my shell... literally

Cinderace: And that's why you broke that window? 😏

Lucario: I didn't know any better, I was just a baby 😖

Eevee: Well, obviously! All the scientists were all 'Why don't you evolve, it's so weird'. Everyone expects Eevees to lie down and just accept whatever evolution you choose for me. But I'm an independent, free-spirited Eevee who will not be defined by anyone else 😎

Chloe: You tell them, Eevee! ☺️

Eevee: And the other Eeveelutions there were just other text-subjects, we were acquaintances at best, really... Sometimes they'd Eevui, eevui, vuivui

Goh: Oh, the translator beam ran out of charge... well, I guess that's enough question answering for today!

Chloe: Aww, I wanted to hear Eevee talk more 😥

Goh: You're a little obsessed with that pokémon, you know?

Chloe: What, like you're not obsessed with every pokémon? 😑

Pokemon Sword by Tumblr decides my fate

Journey to the first badge: Masterpost

The text never ended, and while that was understandable with SwSh being the start of Gen 8. That makes repeat playthroughs a little difficult in the hand-holdy feel of the endless blocks of text and seemingly cookie-cutter 2-D characters. Like, Hop, hunny, c'mon. Can you not mention pages in your legend for five seconds?

But with our little Sobble named Xion, I tried to race through the opening establishing plot. Catching a Wooloo and naming him Meep to avoid the catching tutorial and telling Hop that no, this isn't my first time in a Pokemon Center. Cause, honestly, thank Arceus they added that... if only they'd keep it in every single game moving forward...

With Leon giving me plenty of Pokeballs, I instantly looked for a Nickit and Yamper, naming them Gigi and Lola respectively. After that, I caught one of every Pokemon I could find across Route 1 and 2. At least, I think I did. I wasn't looking at a guide.

Having done that before challenging Hop at Professor Magnolia's place meant I didn't have anything new to catch during his little "challenge". And the purple-haired twerp had the AUDACITY to be sassy about it as if I wasn't completing my Dex faster than his little butt ever could.

But I digress, it was time to get into the Wilds of Galar. Because you know the train just has to run into the one flock of Wooloo for no other reason than plot. And that was really the best thing ever as I poked my head into every Raid Den I could.

Well, sort of. I only caught the first 12 non-repeating Pokemon I found before moving over to the Isle of Armor. Klara gave me a little trouble since my Pokemon were barely over level 10, but I was able to win out in one attempt. And trying to run around to the various Dens on my way to the Dojo.

Honey was an absolute doll and Mustard was his usual partially shady self. But the Slowpoke he trained caused Xion to evolve into Drizzile. I still got the little G-Max Bulbasaur and named him Hashi. Since I didn't need to get Kubfu just yet, I stopped at the second trial. But when we get to the first gym town, we will finish that off.

But after repeating the 12 Raid Den scourge, I went on to the Crowned Tundra. Peony tromped me soundly and called me a softie. Like, sir, I could have been so much worse for you if I wanted to be. You're just lucky I need to get into the Tundra right now...

Ignoring the Dynamax Adventures for now, I ran screaming through the Tundra. Kinda loving and hating the new caves that can be spelunked to your heart's content, but the frickin' Dens hidden in the cave systems... Please, make those easy to find and leave the spelunkable caves to hold something more interesting, please? Rare spawns would be nice.

Though, speaking of Raid Dens, adding a Mienfoo named Mulan to the squad just to help round out weaknesses and give a nice, hard-hitting baby girl to make things interesting.

While setting up for future events, I went ahead and started grinding out that Pokedex and getting Madara the Kubfu to level 30 so we could climb the Tower of Darkness. Very simple projects in theory... but man was that a task and a half. Though I can't express how good it felt to whoop Bede instantly with Gigi. So many memories of my original disdain justified and rectified with one team member.

First of all, Klara and her Poison Types were a trial in and of themselves twice over since I had no real counters, other than Hashi clearing away the spikes. But I eventually got everything sorted out and then came training...

In the Crowned Tundra, I proceeded to complete a Dynamax Adventure and keep an Obstagoon. Suicune knocked out three Pokemon after the Hatterene before it had knocked out one but thankfully you don't need to beat it to progress the story. Instead, I used the Obstagoon to battle around the Tundra, running errands for a creepy Harvest King. (No, I don't like Calyrex... you see what it does to Peony? Bruh better keep his little noggin' to himself.)

But with all that cleared away, I flew back to Turrfield and the Gym Challenge... with a team in its early twenties and more than over-leveled. Add in the fact that herding Wooloo is rather simple and you have a recipe for a quick Gym badge right out of the gate.

Went in with Meep being paralyzed, but he fought through and took down the Gossifleur with a series of Headbutt. Then I swapped for Gigi knowing that I would be Dynamaxing along with Milo and his Eldegoss. Though side note; why didn't they give Milo an Applin for the first battle? It isn't a very strong Pokemon and would add a smidge of diversity to his team. Heck, add a Grookey so he has something other than just the same two Pokemon in his first battle.

Either way, we got the first badge, now to poke into some Raid Dens and hold a couple more polls...

SVSSS pokemon AU where after he transmigrates Shen Yuan has to basically befriend Shen Jiu’s pokemon so they don’t give away the fact that he’s not Shen Jiu and because of that he actually clues into SJ’s traumatic background and sees the people around him as people instead of characters a LOT sooner than in canon

I don’t think that SQQ would have a full six team, even if he does battle regularly, but I think he’d have three at most that were originally SJ’s and then as the story goes on, he might adopt a few more of his own to signify his acceptance into his new identity and role

NOW THE FUN PART!!! Here’s what I think the character’s pokemon teams would be! Its long so i’ll put it under the cut

Shen Jiu: Serperior (caught while working under Wu Yanzi as a Snivy), a Ninetails (given as an ‘engagement gift’ to Shen Jiu as a Vulpix by Qiu Haitang, helped him burn down the estate), and a Thievul (never really ‘caught’ this pokemon, but is considered his “first” pokemon as its lurked around him since his time on the streets as a Nickit- helped feed him and Qi-ge as streetkids, lead Qi-ge to SJ when he was locked up in the Qiu household, helped him with his jobs for Wu Yanzi, is seen skulking around Qing Jing causing problems on purpose)

Shen Yuan: Technically all of Shen Jiu’s but also a Zoroark (caught as a Zorua, affectionately named “Bingpup” or “BingBing” or “BB” he was caught after the Skinner incident, symbolizes SY ability to trick others in to believing in an illusion), and an Absol (started following him around before the Abyss arc, making everyone fear that something terrible was going to happen to SQQ, nicknamed “Cassandra” or “Cass”, never leaves the peak except for the time it was skulking around Huan Hua Palace before SQQ escaped and died, symbolizes SY regret that he can’t change things the way he wants)

Yue Qingyuan: Boltund (officially caught after he became a disciple, but used to follow him and SJ around as street kids), a Yamask (found it at the Qiu Estate Ruins, it sought him out and followed him back to the peak, he thought it was Xiao Jiu for the longest time), and Zacian (found him dying in the caves, only reason he survived binding his soul to the Xuan Su sword)

Luo Binghe: Haxorus (captured it after he was accepted at Qing Jing as an Axew, its a shiny, evolved in the Abyss), a Houndoom (found in the Abyss), Darkrai (found it in the dream realm, not technically ‘his’ pokemon but follows him around, is his Signature pokemon as a Heavenly Demon Lord), and a Sylveon (given to him by his mother as an Eevee egg, turned into a Sylveon before the Abyss arc, was so heartbroken over the betrayal but it stayed on QJ peak, it would lay by the Sword Mound and SQQ would talk with it daily, in PIDW it was an Umbreon)

Liu Qingge: Bisharp (the pokemon he got after becoming a “War God”, YYX as a matching Pawniard which SQQ thinks is the cutest thing), Lucario (technically ‘his’ pokemon as it follows him around but isnt caught, likes to follow him and fight alongside LQG), Aegislash (his signature pokemon, got him when he was 4 years old and first learning sword forms), Gallade (given to him as a Ralts, a matching pair to LMY’s Gardevoir, upon LQG death in PIDW he became LMY’s pokemon but this doesnt happen in SVSSS), Braviary (given to him by SQQ as a Rufflet as a joke but jokes on him he loves the loud guy)

Shang Qinghua: Meowth (OG’s only pokemon, SQH found it on his way to CQP, started off as a bitter angry thing, but became more lax as time went on, will often hiss at those he feels are being unfair to SQH and is not allowed near MBJ because of this, nicknamed “Lil’ Big Money” or “Lil’”), Whimsicott (became his as a disciple, helped him sneak around for MBJ and steal things/gather info, nicknamed “Q-tip” or “Q”), Snom (given to him by MBJ as a gift years into their partnership but before canon, said it ‘reminded him of you’ SQH was insulted but still loves him, nicknamed “Puddle”), Skwovet (his first pokemon, nicknamed “Cheeks,” he’s had this pokemon since he was 4 and it’s been his closest companion and knows all his secrets, acts as an emotional support pokemon)

Mobei-Jun: Regice (acquired this pokemon after he got his inheritance, a pokemon that only follows the Mobei-Jun), Glalie (a pokemon he’s had since he was a child, considered his signature pokemon), Galarian Darumaka (he found it in a blizzard, it reminds him of SQH so he keeps it and feeds it berries, it likes to hide in his cloak when he travels, SQH had no idea about this pokemon until well into their romantic relationship, he thought it was just a random pokemon running around in the palace)

Was abandoned in the forest at a young age and raised by Pokemon for a good part of his life a little feral but he's grown out of it mostly literally just got found by Tubbo and Tommy one day and brought home he doesn't battle because growing up in the forest every battle that happened between Pokemon had real and legitimate stakes so he can just never do it for fun but he is a contest star / coordinator!

Cleffa was just a funny idea because Hank is this super buff dude and cleffa is this dinky annoying fairy type. The whole idea is that she wouldn’t leave him alone during the first couple madness-es. Following him n shit and he was just like fine ok u can stay I guess

Wooper for Sanford contrasts Deimos’s Ekans and I didn’t realize that until today so that’s cool. Wasn’t really thought behind that 💀

Crobats are only gained through high friendships so I think that’s a quiet sweet idea for Jebus

Cubone with Hofnarr because Cubone lore it wears its skull of its mom and I like sad things but not too sad because Tricky is there and it’s a happy reunion even if Tricky only rlly recognizes him faintly

2bdamned gets Emolga because I wanted to give him an electric Pokémon for work reasons & Sewaddle because of the silk the Pokémon makes can help sew mfs back together

Dr Crackpot gets a Nickit because he steals office supplies probably and him having a Nickit is only reasonable

Sheriff gets a Wobbufett because he needs the moral support and a Bounsweet because he needs the moral support and the kickass support

Auditor gets the cool ghost types but I specifically chose the honedge because if you grab the handle it’ll suck out your life source and I think that would be something the auditor would definitely take advantage of. Gastly and Litwick being there to also be spooky

Phobos i don’t really remember why I chose them except that I think he’d like the Pokémon. Nothing special

Church and Jorge must match also they’re stupid and are like check out our awesome Pokémon!!! *Throws out plusle and minun* and like by now Deimos’s Arbok just like eats them

Mags get onix’s because they’re big and so are onix’s they can like hug at each other’s level

GOL3Ms get Scolipedes cuz I wanted to keep the poison typing and some of the GOL3Ms are like knightly so they can have a steed they can probably not ride

Scientists get a rotom because they need the electricity I’m basic I know 💔

The Sun gets a Ponyta because they should deserve to be able to ride in on a flaming horse

Fellow09 gets a bidoof because he’s both beloved and nobody give af about him

Hot Dog Vendor has a Swirlix because food

Burger Gil has a Cherubi and a Matcha Alcreamie because when he’s a zombie I think it’ll be funny his milcery would turn into the green one

Rich gets a dedenne since he worked in the power place all his life he probably needed moral support and an electric Pokémon

LO Characters as Pokemon Trainers: The Nymphs

The Nymphs teams are based on LO, and their origins in greek mythology. Anything else is pure fanfiction. Please enjoy.

Daphne

Her Bayleef, Bloom has been with her since birth as the two were born in the same field. The two are extremely close. Bloom has hated Apollo ever since she first met him. Literally attacking him with razor leaf and vine whip when the two first met. Apollo has avoided Bloom at all cost ever since. The pokemon Bayleef gets it named after bay leaves which are part of the laurel tree family. The tree which she turns into in the original myth. Her Bellossom, Bella was given to her as an Oddish by Persephone when both Persephone and Daphne were children. Persephone later gave Daphne a Sun Stone to evolve Bella from a Gloom into Bellossom. As Gloom smell bad and Persephone knew it would hurt Daphne to have to leave Bella behind when Daphne left to start her carrear. Bella is always seen dancing on Sprouts its sings. The two are close as they have been with Daphne the longest. Bella evolved from a Sun Stone that Persephone gave her. Bella spied on Daphne's and Apollo's date's in order to protect Daphne as Bloom could not. Bella has also appeared in some of Daphne's photoshoots. Her Frosmoth, Silk a gift from Thanatos as he is associated with moths or butterflys. Silk is often mistaken for a beautiful bow as she loves sit on Daphne's head. Pumpkin, her Pumpkaboo initially was in the care of Thanatos. Thanatos cared for Pumpkin, but feared people would think he was getting soft so he gave Pumpkin to Daphne. Although Echo thinks it was just so he had an excuse to visit Daphne. Her Finneon and Goldeen are a reference to orignal origins as a water nymph.

Echo

Echo is ace is obviously Chatter, her Chatot who often repeats what is ever said around him. Daphne calls Chatter, Echo Jr or Echo's shadow as the two are never far a apart. Something useful as Chatter repeats Hera's commands in order for Echo not to miss a word her mistress speaks. Hera has mixed feelings toward Chatter as realizes he is useful, but he also never shut up. So she is on the fence about him. Her ditto, Daffodil, is a reference to Narcissis the man fell in love with, but was more in love with her own reflection. Her Vaporeon, Vapor can literally become one with water. Another reference to Narcissisus. Her Misdeavous, is known for mimicing people. Her Gogoat, Fauna and Pikapek, Reed were both gifts from the God, Pan, who loved her. She also has Audino, its just not on her team.

Aetna

Aetna has only had 3 apparences so far, but her team will definetly leave an impact. Half her team is based on her appearence in LO, while the other half is base on her portray in Greek mythology.

Hephaetus gifted her Rotom, Virus and her Porygon Z, Update. As he was worried she was lonely being limited to the web. Technically Aetna recieved Update through trading a Hepheatus another Rotom, but that was just done so she would have a Porygon with better graphics. Charjabug makes sure the computers she uses stay powered even during blackouts. Her Octillery, Palikoi, is known for hitting enemies with blasts of hot water. He is named after the greek god of geysers and hot springs. Depending on the myth on Aetna is the mother or grandmother of Palikoi the greek god of geysers and hot springs. Stakataka, an Ultrabeast looks like a building come to life is reference to Mount Aetna which shares her name. According to greek mythology Zeus threw Mt. Aetna on top of father of monsters Typhoon. According to pokemon canon Ultrabeast are not legendary as there more than one of each as they come. Her Camerupt, Mountain is another reference to Mount Aetna.

Thetis

When I said Zeus had a type well Thetis is the secound mistress of his that has a Malamar as her one of her Aces. Thetis is no where near Leto's level, but she is still a master manipulator. Manipulating both Zeus and Minthe. Her Malamar, Malice will do whatever it takes to get what it wants. Even framing Thetis' other pokemon in order to remain on top of Thetis' team. That being said it is still number two Thetis' true Ace, Yuki-Onna, the Frosglass. Its Moon dex entry explains its spot on Thetis' team "The soul of a woman lost on a snowy mountain possessed an icicle, becoming this Pokémon. The food it most relishes is the souls of men." Beautiful, yet vicious nature of Thetis's Yuki-Onna makes it easy to understand why the pokemon is her ace. Jaws, her Sharpedo, was a gift from her parents as Thetis is a water nymph who always had men after her. Her Leipard, Leila hates that it is third place in Thetis' team. It is well known that Thetis' Liepard considers Hera's Persian its rival. Something that Hera's Persian seems indifferent too which just makes Liepard angrier.Gossip, her Nickit often helps her steel Zeus' phone, when Thetis wants to hurt Hera.

Leila and Gossip happen to be friends. As Gossip will help steal food for Leila while Leila protects Gossip from getting attacked by Thetis' other pokemon. Her Huntail, Glow, was from a trade that went wrong. Zeus was susposed to trade her Clamperl with a Deep Sea Scale so she would have a Gorebyss. Instead it was holding a Deep Sea Tooth and evolved into a Huntail. Wierdly enough Jaws and Glow are close friends and help keep each other safe from the infighting within Thetis' team.

Minthe

As master manipulator of men from Thanatos to Hades it makes sense her main ace would share the same skill. Salazzle rules over the male salandit and destroys any female who threaten her rain. Her Salazzle, Sass is just vicious as her trainer. Most people in Underworld corps think its fiting that one of Minthe's ace is Gorebyss. As it's pokedex entry states "Although Gorebyss is the very picture of elegance and beauty while swimming, it is also cruel. When it spots prey, this Pokémon inserts its thin mouth into the prey's body and drains the prey of its body fluids." Her Gorebyss, is named Siren. Ironically Siren was gift trade from Hades who traded to her a magickarp in order to make it evolve. Minthe literally drains the life of those around her be it Thanatos or Hades. She uses her beauty to bring them in before draining them completely. Her preference for poisin types continues with her Dragalge, and her Victreebel. Her Carnivine was gift from Thanatos who wanted to impress her. It did not work. Her Poliwag was gift from her family and her only connection to time as simple water nymph. It is also where Hades got his pet name, tadpole from as Poliwag is the tad pole pokemon.

Nymphs are done. Who is next, but the most feared beingings in LO, the Titans.

I choose you

This is entirely @renazerosart‘s fault because of this gorgeous art of Jiang Cheng and his pokemon.

“No,” Jiang Cheng chokes out, barely able to breathe with what his father just said.

“Jiang Cheng,” Jiang Fengmian sighs, clearly already done with this conversation. “I don’t want to hear any more about this. You’re going to give me your Eevee now.”

“No,” Jiang Cheng screams again, and he cradles the single remaining pokeball he still has close. “You can’t take it from me as well.”

He’s aware that he’s barely understandable between all his sobs, but he doesn’t care. His father already took his other three pokemon and Eevee is all Jiang Cheng has left.

He won’t allow him to take it, too.

“Don’t be difficult now,” Jiang Fengmian says and extends his hand again. “Give it here! It will evolve into something that looks too much like a dog and Wei Ying is afraid of dogs.”

“Then I simply won’t let it evolve!” Jiang Cheng sobs out, but Jiang Fengmian shakes his head.

“If you don’t evolve it, then there’s no use in you having it. Hand over the ball!”

“I won’t!”

“Jiang Wanyin!” Jiang Fengmian bellows but Jiang Cheng continues to shake his head.

“I hate you!” Jiang Cheng yells at him and then turns his glare onto Wei Wuxian who is covering behind Jiang Fengmian’s legs. “And I hate you, too!”

He doesn’t wait for a reply, he simply turns around and runs away from his father and his new brother, his single remaining pokeball still cradled close to his chest.

Jiang Cheng is still crying as he runs through Lotus Pier, looking to hide away somewhere where is parents or his new brother won’t find him. His little feet take him down a pier far in the back of Lotus Pier, one he’s never been to before. He knowns he’s not supposed to go there on his own, but he doesn’t care right now. He just needs to get away.

His father made him send all his pokemon away. His Growlithe, and Houndour and Lillipup are all gone now and just the thought makes new tears appear on Jiang Cheng’s face.

The Growlithe was the first pokemon Jiang Cheng caught all by himself and he was so wonderfully cuddly and always warm; a perfect pillow to sleep on. His Houndour looked so scary all the time, and not many kids dared to play with it, but to Jiang Cheng it was always the sweetest, licking his face and wanting to play. The Lillipup he caught last, and it was still so damn tiny that Jiang Cheng could carry it around by himself and it was always excited to go new places.

And now they are all gone!

A new sob wrecks Jiang Cheng’s small frame as he runs down the pier and he hates his father and the new brother he has now.

It’s all Wei Wuxian’s fault, being afraid of Jiang Cheng’s pokemon as if any of them had ever hurt Wei Wuxian and now Jiang Cheng was all alone again.

Those three were the first friends Jiang Cheng made all by himself and they were already so well trained, too! His father used to say that the Growlithe would surely grow up to be a very fearsome and strong Arcanine one day, and now Jiang Cheng would never see it happen.

Because his dad forced him send his precious friends away, and for what? For some tears from a boy they all only knew for a single day!

Jiang Cheng sobs again, and when he stumbles over his own feet, because he’s so busy crying, he sits down right where he stands and wails.

It’s not fair! Not fair at all! Wei Wuxian brought his own Nickit and of course he is allowed to keep it, too, even though Jiang Cheng isn’t fond of that pokemon. But Wei Wuxian had taken one look at Jiang Cheng’s Lillipup and started crying and Jiang Cheng’s father had picked him up and ordered Jiang Cheng to send his pokemon away.

And Jiang Cheng had obeyed right until his dad demanded he hands over Eevee as well. Jiang Cheng won’t give up his Eevee. He will rather leave before he gets rid of that, too!

But now the Eevee is the only pokemon Jiang Cheng has left, after he trained so diligently with the others and new tears stream down his face at the memory, even as he puts the pokeball with Eevee safely into his pouch.

Jiang Cheng doesn’t even want to catch any other pokemon anymore! He had his favourites chosen and now that they are gone he doesn’t see the sense in being a pokemon trainer anymore. His Eevee was never meant to fight, even though it’s really good but Jiang Cheng hates sending it into fights.

It’s so tiny and so fluffy, it shouldn’t have to fight.

Growlithe loved to fight; it always got all excited when it was allowed to, even if it was just a practice match and Jiang Cheng nearly passes out he’s crying so hard again.

He hates it here. He hates his father and his new brother and his way too empty pouch on his belt and he just wants to leave this place!

So Jiang Cheng stumbles up on his feet and makes his way further down the pier, barely able to see anything through his tears, but he’s reasonably sure that he truly doesn’t know this pier. He can almost hear his mother say he’s not allowed to go to this one on his own, and it only makes his steps more determined, because his parents are wrong and he will no longer listen to them.

He stumbles further down the pier, but it’s dark outside and he can’t see very well with the tears still streaming down his face, and so he’s not really all that surprised when he suddenly steps into thin air.

Jiang Cheng lets out a startled scream and he tries to fling his pouch onto the pier because he doesn’t want Eevee to drown as well, or worse, be forever stuck inside the pokeball, but before he can untangle the pouch from his belt he already hits water.

Jiang Cheng can swim—he’s not even bad at it—but he’s being caught by surprise and the water is cold and his clothes are very heavy once they get all wet, and soon he’s sinking to the bottom of the lake.

He’s pretty sure he’s still crying but his tears get lost inside the water and Jiang Cheng can hear his mother’s voice telling him again he’s not allowed to go to this pier.

His parents won’t even be sad that he drowned; they’ll say it’s his own fault and besides. His father already brought home a new son. It’s not like they still need Jiang Cheng anyway.

Still, Jiang Cheng struggles to get back to the surface, mostly because Eevee is still trapped in the pokeball and Jiang Cheng wants better for his last remaining pokemon.

But for all the he tries to get back to the surface, he barely makes any movement upwards; instead, he sinks lower and lower.

His gaze is already going a little bit hazy around the edges when suddenly a dark shade approaches him.

Jiang Cheng can do nothing but blink as the huge black shadow turns into a huge black whale; the only visible spots on it are it’s white underbelly and the white dots on the top of its head.

Jiang Cheng tries to smile at the new pokemon, but when he loses a whole lot of air for his troubles he stops.

Suddenly the water around him starts to glow as the red lines on the pokemon start to shine and Jiang Cheng is kind of scared to see just how big this new pokemon really is. Still, it hasn’t eaten him yet, so Jiang Cheng reaches out to try and pat the whale on his head.

He doesn’t quite make it, but a hum fills the water and Jiang Cheng likes to think that the pokemon knows what he tried to do anyway.

Jiang Cheng is just about ready to fall into darkness, when a whole swarm of fish suddenly show up, surround him and gently push him up and up towards the surface.

Jiang Cheng is still losing consciousness rapidly, but the surface gets closer and closer, the full moon illuminating the water enough that Jiang Cheng can finally see the swarm of Magikarps that came to his rescue.

He wants to reach out to pet them as a thank you, but before he can do that, he’s violently flung onto the pier, where he lands hard on his side.

Jiang Cheng coughs, desperately tries to get some air into his lungs, but it takes him a long time before his breathing calms down again.

As soon as he doesn’t feel like he’s drowning anymore, he scoots over the pier to peer into the dark water below, and he’s relieved to see the Magikarps are still there.

He didn’t say thank you yet, so he reaches out for them, and startles when a Magikarp presses into his hand.

Jiang Cheng laughs, because it clearly wants to be petted, and once it’s satisfied with the amounts of pets it received, a new Magikarp takes its place.

Jiang Cheng doesn’t know how much time he spends like this, but the swarm seems to be a big one, and all of them seem to want some pets.

“Thank you for saving me,” Jiang Cheng whispers down to the water and the Magikarp he’s petting right now pushes into his hand even more, before it playfully nips at his fingers.

“That tickles,” Jiang Cheng giggles but he wriggles his fingers some more.

He plays with the Magikarps for a short while, before a shiver wrecks his body, and he remembers that his clothes are wet.

“I should probably go back,” Jiang Cheng whispers, even though his heart is falling at the prospect.

He doesn’t want to go see his parents. They are probably only going to make him send Eevee away again.

At that thought Jiang Cheng startles, because he forgot all about Eevee for a moment!

Jiang Cheng scrambles to his feet, his fingers fiddling with the string at the pouch until he can open it and he hurries to get Eevee’s pokeball out of it.

He flings it onto the pier, watching nervously as Eevee appears in a flash of light, and then he sinks to his knees when he realizes Eevee is dry and still safe.

“I thought you drowned,” Jiang Cheng sobs out just as Eevee flings itself into Jiang Cheng’s arms, and they stay like that for a very long time.

In the end Eevee pulls away first, only to traipse over to the edge of the pier, to stare into the water, where the Magikarps are still swimming close under the surface.

“They saved me,” Jiang Cheng mutters to Eevee as he strokes a hand over its back.

Eevee makes a noise, before it starts to nose at the pouch still hanging at Jiang Cheng’s belt.

“What do you want?” Jiang Cheng mumbles, reaching down to push Eevee away, but when a pokeball tumbles out, Jiang Cheng freezes.

Eevee pushes the ball closer to the edge of the pier, its intention clear now, but Jiang Cheng doesn’t dare to move.

If he catches all of these Magikarps, his parents will just make him get rid of them again, he’s sure of it.

But Eevee is insistent and when the ball tumbles over the edge, Jiang Cheng flings himself forwards to catch it.

He only has a set number of balls—his parents told him again and again that he needs to be responsible with them—and he’s not sure he even has enough for all the Magikarps swimming around. But Jiang Cheng would feel bad for only catching a few and not all of them and so he pulls out all the balls he has.

He lines them up on the pier and as if the Magikarps know what he wants to do, they each choose a ball to swim in front of.

It turns out Jiang Cheng does have enough—he even would have two left—and that is all he needs. He moves down the line, throwing a ball at the Magikarp that’s already waiting for it, and none of them break free of the pokeball even once.

In the end, Jiang Cheng caught about twenty Magikarps and it makes him more than happy to know that he has this many pokemon. But as soon as he thinks that, he feels bad again, because Magikarps are not meant to be kept in a pokeball.

They are supposed to swim free in the water and so he releases all of them again.

Jiang Cheng isn’t sure if they are surprised by his actions or if they just generally look as surprised as this, but when they start to get agitated, he leans over the edge of the pier again.

“I don’t want to keep you trapped,” he tells them, reaching out to pat the nearest ones again. “You’re still mine, but you can swim here, okay?” he asks them, not really expecting an answer, but all of them fling themselves out of the water, jumping high into the air.

Jiang Cheng takes this as an enthusiastic yes.

He watches them play in the water a few minutes longer, before Eevee starts to get restless and tugs him towards Lotus Pier again.

“Yeah, yeah,” Jiang Cheng mumbles, and gets to his feet. “I’ll come by regularly to feed you, okay?” he promises the Magikarps and with one last wistful look he turns his back on them.

He doesn’t really want to go back to his parents, but he’s cold and wet and he simply wants to curl up in bed and not think about his missing pokemon for a while.

There are already tears gathering in his eyes again, but he swallows them down. His parents will be mad enough at him for running away; no need to make them even more upset because he’s crying.

Jiang Cheng tries to sneak into his room without being detected but his mother is already waiting for him, her Ariados hovering behind her.

“Where have you been?” she hisses as soon as she sees him and Jiang Cheng shrinks into his still wet clothes while Eevee presses against his legs.

“Out,” he gives back, getting some of that stubbornness from before back, but when his mother only glares at him, he tries to make himself smaller than he already is.

“Please don’t make me give Eevee away, too,” he mumbles and jerks when Zidian cracks to life on his mother’s finger.

“Don’t be stupid,” she admonishes him. “That bastard boy will hardly take everything from you,” she says and then flicks her hair back.

“Where have you been,” she demands to know again and Jiang Cheng swallows heavily before he looks out over the lake.

“On one of the piers,” he says, as he prays that she won’t ask any further questions. “Did you know there’s a huge swarm of Magikarps in the lake?” he asks and he’s excited again, because he has all these new friends now. “They are my friends!”

“Unbelievable,” his mother scoffs and then pins him with a look. “At least you only befriended them and didn’t waste your pokeballs on them. Magikarps are the single most useless pokemon you can find, so don’t waste too much of your time on them.”

Jiang Cheng blinks at his mother, because to him they are not useless. They saved his life and wanted to be petted and they wanted to be caught by him—by him—but he swallows all of that down.

“I understand,” he whispers and bows to her.

“Good. Now, off you go. Take those wet clothes off and don’t come crying when you caught a cold for those useless fish.”

Jiang Cheng bows his head under her words, and itches around her to disappear into his room.

“She doesn’t understand,” Jiang Cheng tells Eevee as he tries to take his wet clothes off. “They are not useless,” he says with determination and Eevee clearly agrees with him, because it presses close again.

“They are my friends.”

And Jiang Cheng will take the best care of his friends, he promises himself that. What happened today with Growlithe, Houndour and Lillipup was the worst thing that ever happened to Jiang Cheng and he will not let it happen again.

From today on, he’ll protect his pokemon better.

Stumbling: Chapter 9

Pairing: Raihan X Reader X Leon

Your life hadn’t gone exactly as you planned…

This is why when an old rival walks into the coffee shop you work at he gives you an offer you just can’t refuse. Finally, a chance at the League. Suddenly you are thrust into the spotlight and a world you thought you had left behind. Dreams aren’t always what they are cracked up to be though, especially when you find yourself the tangled up with the champion and a certain gym leader.

The next morning is tense as you pop out of your bedroom and into the common area. Leon and Raihan are sitting at the table pointedly ignoring one another, and honestly, you don’t really know why. You sit down in the vacant chair with a coffee cup in front of it and gaze between the two men. After several moments of silence from Leon and Raihan awkwardly avoiding your eyes, you stand up.

“I’ve got training to do, when you two have dealt with yourselves we’re leaving,” you say in annoyance as you make your way into your room. You emerge about 10 minutes later fully dressed with your pokemon belt stocked with your team. You had sent Queenie, your Vespiquen, to your box and pulled out Arum, your Bounsweet. The Egg is in your backpack nice and snug while both Nile, your Vaporeon and Bastet, your Eevee follow along behind you. You know you are going to have to trade out some pokemon soon, but you wanted to assess your team before you made any decisions.

Once outside you release your team and introduce them to the new pair or members. They all seem pretty happy with one another.

“Alright, everyone! Let’s line up and do some assessments! We’ve got the Hulbury gym next. It’s a water type gym so I’ll need Arum and Axel front and center!”

The duo takes a step forward and you chuckle as Axel lays his head on top of Arum causing the berry pokemon to squeak in indignation.

“Nile, you’re going to be going up against Kabu at the Motostoke Gym in about a week, so we need to get you used to your new form and get some formal training in!”

Nile yips in agreement and you chuckle as he swishes his fin-like tail around. Bastet is standing next to him and you laugh as she scolds him for almost hitting her with his much larger tail. He has the grace to look apologetic at his mate and sits still.

“Bastet, have you given any thought to your evolution?” The Eevee nods her head decisively and steps up to you. You sit on the ground and pull out your Pokedex with all of her options. When you get to Glaceon she puts her paw on the screen indicating that the ice Pokemon is her choice.

“So you want to be a Glaceon? What a perfect little pair the two of you make!” She yips happily and jumps around before going to stand back with her mate and new team.

“Alright, I’ll have to get my hands on an Ice Stone soon!”

Turning your gaze to the last three Pokemon you smiled as Serenity bounds up to you and plops herself onto your head. You had a feeling she would be evolving soon and indulged her whenever she wanted to ride with you now. Davine and Hades lumber over and you regard them critically. Why don’t we see how you two are doing with a battle? Davine pouts up at you while Hades just lets out a little roar of happiness. However, before you could start the battle a commotion in the trees alerts you to some visitors.

“Or you can hand over that Deino andJangmo-o!”

You whip your head around and see a Pokemon thief and several men and women standing behind him.

“What are you doing here?! Did you escape!?”

“Saw your battle on TV. Good job getting your first badge! They never had me! I got away before the cops could show up!” he says in a baby voice before he burst out laughing.

You narrow your eyes at the male before you, “What? Do you think just because I’ve only gotten one badge I can’t take you? I beat you before with no badges…”

“Big talk for a little girl… Where’s your knight in shining armor at? The dragon trainer?”

“I don’t need anyone to beat you…”

“Wanna bet?”

The thief and his accomplices release their Pokemon. With a frown, you notice many different types of dark and poison types like Nickit, Purrloin, Stunky, and Croagunk. The leader, that can’t seem to leave you alone, sends out a Drapion. You curse to yourself as you notice your opponents’ Pokemon all take a fighting stance.

“Well, everyone… This is the real challenge, gyms be damned. Let’s show these thieves what we’re all made of!” A chorus of cries meets your ears as they all get into a fighting stance. Your team leaps into action at the same time your opponents do. Luckily with the training, you’ve done thus far the only ones you really have to coach are Nile and Bastet.

“Nile! Bastet! Use Water Pulse and Swift!” The duo attacks Croagunk while Hades and Davine work on the Drapion and the rest of your Pokemon take on the remaining three themselves. You aren’t surprised when a bright light glows to your left and notice Arum evolving.

“Arum! You’re a Steenee now!” you exclaim in glee ignoring the rest of the battle so you miss the moment that the Drapion breaks free from its battle with your dragons and charges at you. You go to leap out of the way of the scorpion-like Pokemon as you scream when all of sudden it stops in its tracks its stinger inches from you. The Drapion is thrown away from you and faints upon its impact with the ground. Looking up you see Serenity panting and on the verge of passing out.

“Serenity!” you yell as the Stunky bares its teeth and bites your unsuspecting antenna pokemon. She lets out a tiny cry and you scream her name in worry. Axel throws its fists down onto the Pokemon making it release its grip. Arum rushes over and you watch in awe as leaves whip up from the ground and assault the Stunky, knocking it out. You’re surprised when Davine, with a battle cry you’ve never heard before rushes the Nickit heading butting it and sending it reeling back before hitting it with a dragon tail.

“What is going on here!? How is some little girl beating all of us?!” he yells in anger.

“First off!” you yell as you hold Serenity in your arms, “Don’t call me little girl. I’ve kicked your ass twice now.”

You watch in satisfaction as the other Pokemon fall to your team, “Secondly, I train my own Pokemon, I don’t steal other peoples!”

“You stole my Deino! I want it back!”

“Hades made his choice.”

You watch in amusement as Hades whips his head towards the voice and a low growl emitted from his throat. The ring leader takes a step back in fear.

“So you’ve named the traitor.”

“Fitting isn’t it?” you ask with a smirk.

“You’re such a little bitch!”

“Maybe… but I still beat you.”

“You only think you have.”

Your eyes widen as several more thieves step out of the trees surrounding you. You square your shoulders and begin to call back your team knowing you’re going to have to find another way out of this.

“What? Giving up so soon?”

“Not exactly… but tell me… Why do you care so much about me?”

“Let’s just say you’ve interested someone…”

“Someone?”

“Oh yes… He’s quite interested in you and your Pokemon… And once we hand you over to him and show him what you can do… Well if you’re a good little girl maybe he’ll have a use for you. After all, he did tell us to bring you in alive…”

You let out a smirk, “Is that so?”

He didn’t notice you switch out the Pokemon in your team, so he’s completely unprepared for the moment you threw a Pokeball into the air. Titan your Corviknight glares down at the unsuspecting group before you.

“Let’s go Titan!” you yell as you rush to him and leap onto his back. He takes off and you clutch his feathers tightly so you don’t fall off.

“Gust!” you yell as several of the newly released Pokemon leaps to catch hold of the two of you. The wind knocks them to the ground and you smile as you pat him.

“Good job, Titan…”

He cooed back at you happily, a single red eye gleaming at you as he turns to gaze at you.

“Thank you for being here for me… I promise you I haven’t forgotten you… It’s just… Not time yet… Your new teammates have so much to learn…”

He coos back at you as if he’s saying it’s okay. You just pat his neck and tell him where you need to go. When you arrive back at the Inn you notice Raihan and Leon in the front of the building yelling about something.

“What are you two going on about?!” you exclaim as you land.

The duo whipped around to face you with equal looks of shock on their faces.

“When did you get a Corviknight?! Where do you keep getting all these Pokemon at?!” exclaims Raihan.

“Wow! So Titan evolved?!” Leon exclaims as he approaches the two of you.

Titan dips his head down so that Leon can pet him, “Last time I saw you you were a Rookidee!”

Titan straightens up and fluffs up his feathers obviously preening under the attention.

“I trained Titan when I was younger, I have several Pokemon that I raised when I intended to challenge the League. They mostly hang out at my family’s place, but since starting my adventure I had them put back into my storage box in case I need them for any reason. A good thing to… I needed Titan today or I wouldn’t have made it.”

“What do you mean you wouldn’t have made it?” Asks Leon his voice almost dangerous.

“The thieves are back… You were right, they wanted revenge and to take back Hades and take Davine. Also… They wanted to take...me…”

“They wanted to kidnap you?!” Raihan exclaims as he rushes up to you his hands clenched into fists.

“That’s what they said… I was able to take out the first wave, but there was a second wave surrounding us. I couldn’t fight them all off so I ran…”

“I’m glad you did if something would have happened to you…” Leon says as he pulls you into a hug holding you close to him.

You hear Raihan curse from beside you as he looks down the path, “I bet they’ve run by now… Damnit! I can’t believe we let you go off alone…”

“You can’t be there all the time Rai…” you say as you pull away from Leon.

“No, you need protection at all times now. We can’t let them take you, who knows what they intend to do to you…” Raihan argues.

“I’m not a damsel, guys…”

“No one is saying you are, but you are being targeted by an entire organization of thieves and that’s dangerous,” Leon reasons.

You heave a sigh of annoyance, “I know… I just… I want to have a normal journey… Not one filled with unnecessary danger and people trying to kidnap me and steal my pokemon.”

“Look, we're going to make sure nothing happens to you okay?” asks Raihan as he pulls you towards him. You nod knowing that the two of them will protect you, you just don’t want to need protection.

“You know… you aren’t weak for needing help… if that’s what you’re worried about,” Says Raihan as he squeezes you a little tighter. You smile to yourself wondering how he could know you so well already.

“They found me because of the televised battle, so they are going to know what city I’m in all the time.”

“We won’t have your battles televised then, I’ll talk to the League-”

“No that’s too obvious, plus I doubt that would keep them from finding me, they probably have eyes in all the cities anyway…”

“She’s right, they’re probably watching the gyms, so not having her battles televised would just hurt her career,” Raihan reasons.

The three of you take off down the road to the Pokemon center. You allow Titan some time to stretch his wings as he flies ahead of you all, playing lookout even if you didn’t ask him to.

“So what we don’t do anything?” Leon argues.

“We should let the other gym leaders know what’s going on and have them on the lookout for anyone suspicious,” Raihan puts his hands behind his head and you gaze up at the tall male beside you.

“Besides, I want to be the one to take them out…” Raihan growls, his sharp fang-like teeth showing in a dangerous smirk.

You suddenly know why Raihan is known as the dragon tamer, he may as well be part dragon himself.

“Well, you’ll have to get in line…” Leon says with an edge to voice and glance to your other side you see the champion radiating with power, not the boy you grew up with.

“OH! I have some good news!” you exclaim as you pull out Arum’s Pokeball, “Arum evolved! She is now a Steenee!”

“Sweet!”

“That’s great news!”

“It is! She’s so proud!” you exclaim as you send her out. She blinks up at them with her big eyes before she giggles and begins to dance around on the path before you all. You know you’re trying to keep your mind busy. The return of the thieves is startling and you’re scared. You’re scared for your Pokémon as well as yourself.

‘I need to get stronger…’ you think as you gaze at Arum. She is getting stronger every day as is your other Pokémon. You know you have to be patient, but you can’t help but feel pressured to be strong now.

“Hey, nothing is going to happen to you…” Leon says softly.

“You don’t know that…” you mutter back.

“You’re right I don’t… but I know that while I’m around I’m not letting someone take you from me okay?”

“Okay…”

The trip to the Pokemon center is relatively quick. You all end up stocking up on supplies and you trade out Titan for Nile once again. Your team now consists of Serenity your Hatenna, Axel your Toxel, Davine your Janmo-o, Hades your Deino, Arum your Steenee, and Nile your Vaporeon. Once you have all finished up at the center you head off down Route 5 in order to get to Hulbury. You don’t like the thought of sleeping in the tent and you can feel your paranoia creeping up.

“If we end up having to sleep in the tent tonight, we will keep guard,” Leon says with finality.

“When are you two going to sleep then?”

“We can’t not keep watch, you know this,” Raihan interjects.

“But if you’re tired will you be able to battle if something happens?”

“(Name) you need to calm down and trust us,” says Raihan as he drapes an arm around your shoulders.

“What if they attack us again? What if something happens?”

“We are just going to have to be diligent okay? Just focus on getting stronger for your next gym battle this doesn’t change anything,” Raihan says calmly.

You spend the rest of the day training your team and despite your best efforts to make it to Hulbury, you have to set up camp. There is a small clearing near a pond that is perfect for camping. You all fall into the same routine as you have for the past few weeks. Raihan sets up the tent, Leon starts the fire and you start dinner. The other two pitch in when needed and feed the Pokemon. Everyone is out and meandering around the clearing and whether or not you want to admit it the sky is gorgeous with its pinks and oranges. You focus your energy on the curry you’re making and Serenity volunteers to be your taste testers especially since she hasn’t left your side for hours. You notice Raihan poking around the tall grass, but you don’t pay much attention to him. Leon is at your side helping you with the vegetables and rice.

“How are you holding up?” Leon asks as he chops the potato.

“I’ve been better… Its moments like this that my head just screams at me to go home, but there isn’t anything left for me there…”

“No, you need to get stronger and running from this isn’t going to solve it.”

“I know…” you say softly as you avoid his eyes.

“Hey…” he says as he comes up behind you and wraps his arms around your frame. He rests his head on your shoulder and you feel his warmth and his strength and you feel secure. You feel yourself lean back into him and you rest your head against his.

“You did amazing today. You defeated them and you ran when you knew you couldn’t. That’s all you could do and that’s all I could ask you to do. I’m sorry that you were alone when it happened… It’s my fault for jumping to conclusions about you are Raihan…”

“Jumping to conclusions? Leon, Rai and I are friends and what you saw last night wasn’t anything. Nothing happened. Also, what does it matter if something does happen? Aren’t you-”

A loud squawk interrupts you and you look up in just enough time to see Axel jump back in fear. Rushing forward you watch as your baby stumbles away and rushes behind Arum who is just staring in confusion at the overzealous Farfetch’d who is waving his leek stalk wildly in the direction of the baby.

“Axel… what did you do to it?!” you scold as you watch the bird hop about wielding its leek.

Axel looks up at you with tear-filled innocent eyes and rubs at its head.

“I’m sure you’re fine…” You mutter as you pick up the baby Pokemon to examine his head. He pouts at you as the Farfetch’d lunge at the two of you.

“Oh absolutely not… Not after the day I’ve had… Serenity! Psybeam!”

The angry bird is knocked back a few feet but seems undeterred. Serenity hops to the side and hits Farfetch’d with confusion causing the Pokemon to become disoriented. With one final attack from Serenity, Farfetch’d falls back into the grass and you just chuckle triumphantly.

“Well catch it!” yells Leon from your right.

“Oh! Right!” You pull a Pokeball out of your bag and throw it at the bird Pokemon. After it shakes a few times it finally signals that Farfetch’d is caught.

“You caught a Pokemon the normal way for once… Good job!” says Raihan as he walks up to the two of you.

“THE CURRY!” you yell before you can answer and you rush back over to the pot in just enough time to keep it from boiling over. Raihan picks the Pokemon up from the grass and walks over to you.

“When he evolves you’re going to have a fighter on your hands,” he says as he hands your new Pokemon over to you.

“What are you talking about? He’s already a fighter…” you mutter while you stir the pot.

“You know what I mean!” he chuckles.

“I do…”

You send Farfetch’d to your box knowing you will get him out to train later. Raihan hangs out with you while you plate the food and then helps you divvy the food out to everyone. The meal is quiet with everyone lost in their own thoughts about everything that has been going on. After dinner is over and everything is cleaned up you decide to turn in. You know that sleeping will be very difficult tonight.

You hear the front of the tent unzip as Raihan steps in, “Leon is taking first watch so let’s get some sleep okay? You have a gym badge to win tomorrow!”

You can tell he’s trying to make you feel better about the situation, but what you don’t expect is for him to lay his sleeping bag down right next to you.

“Rai?”

“Look I’m right here okay? Just go to sleep…”

You nod at him and roll so you are turned away from him, but you’re so restless it isn’t long until you roll to face the top of the tent and then to your side again. After a few more minutes of rolling around and just being restless and annoyed you feel an arm wrap around your waist and a chin rest on your shoulder.

“I’ve got you…” is the only thing that a sleepy Raihan mutters before he pulls you closer to his body and slowly his warmth and the feeling of security that surrounds you allows you drift off into a fitful sleep.

Notes: Hey guys sorry for the long wait things have crazy lately... Also, if you didn’t see my post earlier about my sweet kitty baby, he’s had some blockage. If you are unfamiliar with kitties and blockage it’s very dangerous and deadly. If left untreated for a day they will die, it’s that serious... So I now have an astronomical animal hospital bill to pay but my baby is alive and recovering so I won’t complain. I think I’m going to open up commissions to help pay for the costs. PMD ML AU

I’m in a bad mood right now so i wanted to do something fun!

PMD ML AU MASTERLIST

I know not everyone is going to agree with my selections but I will provide my reasoning for each and do every character I have remembered. I haven’t watched ML at all in ages but here we go lol

The plot, in my head, is pokemon living inside the universe, none of which were once humans. They are just in the world, operating within it. It follows Adrien, Nino, Marinette and Alya joining a rescue guild and forming their own team. Over time their guild threatens to close so after a lot of hard work they open their own guild and all their friends join and make teams!

The Gang

Nino- A Buizel. I love a water pokemon for Nino and buizels design and color scheme are just so vibrant. Plus bubbles! He’s a good mix of energetic but also chill. just an otter chilling in a current, floating away, probably asleep

Adrien- a Pikachu. Poster boy? Poster pokemon! He’s the popular cute beloved pokemon with an electric personality, but really wants nothing more than to be part of a group. Cat Noir’s brashness and diving into trouble suits an impulsive electric type. I considered shinx but Adrien isnt cool enough to be a Luxray lmao

Alya- A Vulpix! Kind of obvious I know but shes firey and impulsive, while also being sassy. Plus you know she would be a regal kickass Ninetales one day. Perfect color scheme for her, I can just see a little vulpix with a birthmark

Marinette- Eevee! when it comes to what pokemon a character would BE as opposed to what they would HAVE i dont think ledian fits at all. As a trainer she’d have one maybe but she wouldn’t be one. I say Eevees have so much potential and can be so many things, they thrive in being ‘normal’ but CAN wield a lot of power and are the epitome of adaptable. Specifically I think she’d evolve into a Sylveon, with a crux ass friendship moment being the reason.

The Class; AKA The Town/Guild

Chloe- Servine

Snivy is so cool and elegant and snooty as is it’s whole line, you KNOW her mom is a super mean Serperior which is exactly what Chloe is aspiring to be. I was tempted to put all classmates into the unevolved category to keep them ‘young’ but since it can happen due to experience or moments in their life I feel like it’s okay to hop around a little. Also, regardless of what you think of her Chloe had some tough moments as a kind. I bet she evolved after her mom left while fighting with her dad. ( Who LOOKS like a very fat serperior but is really a big ole ditto and everyone knows it, Chloe however is convinced no one know and always covers it up)

Sabrina- Butterfree!

I love the idea of a skittish little Caterpie that clung to Snivys back and was always put down a little (especially as a insecure Metapod that evolved because it was standing up to Chloe and ‘toughened up’ a little) eventually evolving into a super unique cool little Butterfree that’s beautiful but still a little timid. Maybe even a pink Butterfree like the anime!

Max- Rotom? Porygon 2?

Max seems too reserved to be energetic rotom but I think Rotom has more personality than Porygon 2. I think if I had to commit I would choose Porygon 2 because the personality can always adapt and Rotom by nature is always zipping about so I think I’ll go with the second idea

Kim- Croconaw

Kim was tough for me, but I think Croconaw is a good comprise of goofy (i mean come on totodile is so goofy) loves to swim (water pokemon!) but also kind of jock who wants to get BIG and aspires to be a super buff Feraligator

Alix- Scorbunny or Raboot

Either in this evolution line is fine with me, especially a particually short Raboot who was really hoping evolution was gonna help in the height department. Fun sporty competitive and also a RABBIT

Ivan- Pangoro

This one feels a little obvious so im not totally sold I also considered a Gogoat but I kind of love the idea of Ivan evolving early so he was suddenly SO much bigger and scarier than his peers. People who were already skittish of the pancham were now totally avoiding this big brute, but people who know him well know that he’s still a young dude inside who wants to hang out with his friends, he just evolved kind of early

Mylene- Audino

Audino is such a sweet round warm loving creature, like how absolutely pleasant it is. It reminds me of Mylenes nature and i can imagine her being exactly like her normal self, always emerging with this lumbering scary Pangoro and treating him so sweetly. This one just fits, i think it works

Nathaneal- Mimikyu

Now i’ll tell you this one is really a toss up so feel free to suggest alteratives. I also heavily considered Datrix, the mid evolution of the Rowlet line. I think that this one is cute cause hes a shy dude that is beloved by many even if he struggles with putting himself out there. plus how he make that outfit? creative!

Rose- Deerling

This one also seems like a easy one but there are many sweet rounded creatures you can pick for Rose, I feel like she slots in many places. But I like deerling for her because its pink and naturey and also really sweet and earnest looking. I feel like a Deerling would always give the benefit of the doubt and i can imagine it swooning about love.

Juleka- Mismagius or Mawile

Also kind of tough you can probably also go with its pre-evolution for this . But I think Mawile isn’t a far reach either! In fact as I’m typing this i might even like it more but i’ll stick to my guns with it. There are a few pokemon you could use for Juleka I think

Lila- Sneasle

I could have also gone Zoura but I think Sneasle just suits her better. Its mean, its deceptive, it is cunny and brilliant. It suits her true nature but not exactly what she claims to be so I will also say Nickit is not totally a far reach for her I feel like that makes sense I just dont like what it evolves into much. Sneasle seems more dangerous to me than Nickit, but perhaps part of Lila’s charm is her unassuming appearance. Open to suggestions on this one!

{Remember how I said Piers names his Pokemon after British (Galarian?) musicians? Well... I think I might’ve figured out their names & personalities~}

In no particular order:

Obstagoon - Strummer (named after Joe Strummer of the Clash)

Personality: Really just a big puppy when not battling, but can be quite fierce when it comes to battling. Will not back down, even if he’s near defeat. Super protective of Piers, so is suspicious around new people. But once he sees the person isn’t a threat, he’ll chill out. Quite affectionate, too, despite his general appearance with the claws & teeth.

Was Piers’ first ever Pokemon, and was caught as a Zigzaoon while he was on the way to receive a Pokedex from the Professor.

Malamar - Barrett (named after Syd Barrett of Pink Floyd)

Personality: A shy Pokemon as an Inkay (similarly to Piers when he first caught it). Piers found him after a trainer abandoned him for not evolving in the “normal” way. But he gradually gained confidence in himself the more he battled with Piers’ encouragement. But he still has moments of shyness as a Malamar, too.

Scrafty - Halford (named after Rob Halford of Judas Priest)

Personality: The most boisterous & eager to battle Pokemon of the team, so no wonder Piers has him up first in his Gym battles. Territorial when it comes to Spikemuth, so expect some acidic liquid to be spit at you when you first enter the town & especially if he doesn’t know you. He’s also really caring when it comes to other members of the team as well as Piers & Marnie.

Skuntank - Iommi (named after Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath)

Personality: Behold, the most chill Pokemon you will ever meet. Tends to nap a whole bunch during the day, so he’s mostly nocturnal or just perpetually sleepy-looking during the day. Don’t be surprised if you find him sleeping around Piers’ home in random places, even if the middle of the floor. Despite this, he kicks it into high-gear when it comes to battling, especially considering he’s the last Pokemon Piers sends out, so he knows he has to bring his a-game. His Sucker Punch is not to be underestimated.

Toxtricity (low-key form) - Dickinson (named after Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden)

Personality: When he first joined the team as a Toxel, he couldn’t help but feel like he didn’t belong in it, since it only seemed he was being used to counter Dark Type’s weaknesses. Along with him being the only non-Dark Type. Leading to him being opposed to battling and would often throw tantrums if sent out to battle, but after seeing how that distressed Piers (mostly due to the sound he made) as well as seeing how much Piers counted on him, he threw his all into battling from then on. He was a huge cuddler as a Toxel, and became a huge comfort thing for Piers to just hug it when he was distressed, and that’s carried on to this very day even with him now evolved. He’s now a very relaxed Pokemon, yet can have an overconfident streak every now and then, especially when it comes to battling.

Thievul (shiny) - Dusty (named after Dusty Springfield)

Personality: Gifted to him on his birthday by Roark as a Nickit, she evolved into a Thievul about a month afterwards. She’s a rather loving & affectionate Pokemon & is very loyal to Piers despite having not been on his team for very long. She’s not a battler, and has shown no interest in battling. The “mom” of the team, she’s big on watching over the other team members and making sure they’re taking care of themselves. She’s also a huge comforting presence for Piers, too, and is always checking on him to see if he’s doing okay, and will do the same to anyone he’s close to.

Zoroark - Mercury (named after Freddie Mercury of Queen)

Personality: The strong silent type when you first meet her, but opens up and becomes more energetic & playful around Piers/people she knows. She started out as a timid Zorua after Piers caught her on the Isle of Armor, transforming into one of Piers’ other Pokemon when she got too nervous. But over time, as well as Piers showing her the utmost care & support and his team being very welcoming towards her, she gradually gained her more playful personality.

Absol - Deacon (named after John Deacon of Queen)

Personality: This Pokemon was gifted to him by Hailey. Again, he’s not a battling Pokemon. More of a support Pokemon (as all of his Pokemon are) for Piers, and as a result, he’s very in-tune to Piers’ sensory sensitivities. Overall, he’s serious & quiet in nature and will not hesitate to jump to Piers’ defense at the slightest hint of danger.
