bts || pre-debut personalities & group dynamic; tarot reading

✦ Pre-debut Personalities:

⭒ Jin:

cards: the star, ace of swords, ten of wands reversed (the moon)

Jin certainly wanted to pursue a career in the entertainment industry, but it feels like he didn't know exactly where to channel his efforts and attention. It was all kinda scattered, as he was confused, he couldn't bring himself to give 100% to anything. Plus, instead of letting the promises of a shiny life move him, he analyzed everything from a logical standpoint and tried to figure out where exactly all of these decisions would lead him. On top of that, I see him being extremely straightforward and inquisitive, questioning every order that was given, as well as every change and proposition. Really, he meant what he said & he said what he meant. Jin simply thought he would be better off being honest and having full clarity about everything that was going on - this, instead of just following along and keeping the blindfold on until the very end. His sincerity and sagacity was also extended towards the other trainees, so they might've often felt like he was one that would always be honest and fair with them, no matter the circumstances. At some point, too, Jin could've seriously questioned whether or not it would all be worth it in the end, or if they weren't just wasting their youth away for nothing.

⭒ Suga:

Suga was all about self expression and creation. Being all by himself, exploring what he was capable of doing, and learning about this world that he was about to enter, was where he felt like he thrived. He might've actually preferred to work alone most times, in the silence of the studio, and often into the early hours of the morning. As an individualistic and creative person, not only did he seek to find himself in the music, but he also aimed to build himself through it. In the idol industry, this wouldn't be easy given their history of standardizing groups and individuals to fit whatever vision they had or the current trends. So, with that in mind, he searched and searched, keeping notes of what sounded like him and what wasn't to his taste; he refined his craft and, finally, arrived to a place where he felt like he had formed an artistic persona and style that he was proud of moving forward with. This would be his armor - the one that would protect him from all the poking, pushing and pulling; and the one that he would go to war with, fearlessly speaking his mind and setting free his individuality. Suga might've created a lot of music during this time that he never ended up sharing with others; not because he didn't want to, but because he didn't even think of it. It was all part of this process of finding his place and his sound. Additionally, for his age, he was also very mature already. Deliberate, empathetic, wise. His way of showing his affection towards the others might've been done through him taking the time to give them useful advice or to take a look at their self-produced stuff (beats, lyrics, choreographies, etc). In fact, he was quite the reserved introvert (possibly the biggest introvert here, at this point). He wasn't shy and neither did he reject company, but he found the most comfort and satisfaction in being solo and growing into his new life on his own, at his own pace.

⭒ J-Hope:

J-Hope went through many highs and lows - that's for certain… First, we see that he had a big passion for learning, at this point in his life. Plus, more than the spotlight, the technical side of performance was what truly captivated him. So, given that, he seeked absolute perfection; he wished to be the most knowledgeable and skilled person in the room. To achieve that, he might've spent long hours by himself, watching videos, tutorials or reading interviews of performers he admired; dancing for hours on end until it finally felt like the choreography, through every move, every hit and every line, was flawless; writing and rewriting lyrics over and over again, polishing every rhyme and meaning. Truly, the more he learned, the more he fell in love with what he was doing. Nonetheless, we can also tell that J-Hope was a very outgoing and spontaneous individual, regardless of him dedicating so much of his time to practicing and bettering himself. In relation to that, too, he might've been a very good guide towards the others, always helping them bring their skills to perfection. But, beyond that, he was also a quite friendly and charismatic guy, always bringing people together and wanting to share a laugh with them. It feels like he tried his best to lighten up the mood, as he was aware that everybody was working very hard and, as the young people that they were, they were meant to be having some fun, too. At last, and as I mentioned in the beginning, his enthusiasm and drive were quite inconsistent, leading to times where he was in extremely high spirits, and other where things were quite gloomy. Often, he was passionately putting his all into it, certain that it would be worth it and he'd soon be living the life of his dreams; but from time to time, he thought of giving up on it all and going back home to a "normal life", away from all of the stress and pain he was feeling. Until the very end of his time as a trainee, he ran again and again through this cycle and there was no way to know what the next day would be bringing.

⭒ RM:

cards: justice (the hierophant), ace of swords, two of cups

The most "serious" and professional out of all, at this point. Very cool, calm and collected, always looking to keep everything under control. RM took on big responsibilities from early on, and fully embraced this position, which led him to quickly ditch the happy-go-lucky attitude that's common for teenagers and young adults. Plus, I think not solely because of his leadership role, but also due to his actual personality, he might've served as the mediator between the other trainees and the company, and frequently conveyed messages from one side to the other. If his fellow trainees expressed to him their disatisfaction regarding a decision that the company made for them, he would come up with a pretty speech with all the points that they made, and then deliver it to their superiors. Also, I feel like RM tried to minimize anything that could cause a rift between these two sides, even if it meant having to change a word or two of what was said. In the end, it should all work out and everybody would come out happy. He was a very trustworthy, organized and logical individual. He also cared deeply about the people around him, and tried to connect with them one-on-one. As soon as someone new arrived, I imagine him approaching them right away, introducing himself and offering to give them a tour around and making them acquainted with the rest of the trainees. Due to this, too, I see him being the one to argue the least with others (during this phase, at least). He just wanted things to stay harmonious and for everybody to feel like they belonged, even given the fact that most were far away from home at such a tender age, and nothing was 100% promised for them from that point forward.

⭒ Jimin:

During this period, Jimin might have suffered a lot due to his own expectations. It was not the case of him wanting to be the best of the best, but he always managed to find flaws in himself or in his performance. He wanted to deliver good results and make his teachers/instructors, family and friends, and even himself, proud. However, this only led him to hold back from completely opening up himself to self-expression, as well as for trying new things and letting his creativity run free. Jimin could've been that one person who rehearsed everything beforehand - from the moment he entered the practice room and until the moment he left; what he should say if someone asked him this or that; what he should wear or not wear; etc. He was very scared of making mistakes and of going back on progress that he had already made. As many of the others, he daydreamed of the life all of this hardwork was going to lead him to: the stage, the lights, the applauses… but it was almost as if this little present from Heaven was propped up at the edge of a cliff, and any wrong move at all could make it fall into the ocean bellow. To be completely honest, I don't see him focusing as much on the riches and fame, as he focused on the possibility of showing off all the passion and skill that he had inside of him, and how this music and dance could then connect so many people. This, too, could've made him to be even harder on himself - he was very emotionally invested, and didn't wanna fail and let everybody down. Nevertheless, this was also the way though which he connected with the other trainees: the dream that brought them all together, the beginning of a big journey, the passion, the desire to create and perform; but also the fears and the anxieties, the sleepless nights and the hardships. This dichotomy kept them united, as they supported each other through all of the ups and downs of it all, and everyone felt understood.

⭒ V:

There were definitely some communication problems here, as he might've often found it difficult to get his point across or to get people to take his words seriously. He was talking, but others weren't receiving the message, for some reason. Also, I think people might've overlooked his intelligence; but, still, he was already a very smart and shrewd young man, who listened to everything they said and then made his moves intentionally. On top of that, V was a very creative and passionate person, eager to step on stage and finally become a professional "artist". He loved being in the spotlight and getting compliments; showing off and charming people with his skills. The thought of dressing up, dyeing his hair, and completely embodying a new concept was very attractive to him, too - so that kept him looking forward to his debut, for sure. Like Suga, though, he was quite an individualistic guy and, because of that, he might've not been to fond of the idea of becoming "just another one". He wanted his personality to still shine through the idol mask, and that could've been something that he thought about and practiced a lot. This would then be seen through quirky habits and small details that he hid in his performances or outfits and, with time, it would be a symbol of V, setting him apart from the rest.

⭒ Jungkook:

cards: two of pentacles, the star, knight of wands

Extremely active and adaptable. I don't see him having a very defined personality at this point, but moreso, as the youngest, he might've had the habit of picking up traits from the rest the people around him. He was up for anything, really; he was just testing out new things in life and seeing where it would take him. You could probably find Jungkook daydreaming in a corner by himself, and on his mind would be playing visions of him standing on stage, performing to thousands of people, and bathing in the applauses directed at him. This filled his whole body, heart and soul with passion and excitement; it made him want to rush everybody and everything, and debut right away. He couldn't wait for the day this was all coming true, and he might've repeated this a hundred times a day until it actually happened. However, I still see him often weighing out the pros and the cons of following through with this plan and this path. At times, there were things pulling him back home, to a place where it was all more stable and safe, but, then again, the dream was too big and the happiness that it brought him was too strong. Ultimately, he found a way to stay until the very end and make it to that stage, but it might've been only possible due to the guidance and support of the older trainees, and their assurance that it was all gonna work out for him and he would not be alone in the journey.

✦ Pre-debut Group Dynamic:

cards: four of wands, nine of swords (six of cups reversed), eight of swords (ace of wands, two of cups)

They supported each other with all they had, and kept a very comfortable dynamic going for the most part. Everybody knew their place and what they had to do to make it all work out. Chores, where to keep things, what was who's… from the get go they were a well oiled machine. Everybody contributed, and no one even thought of taking more than what they were giving. However, since they were growing up away from their families and loved ones (and at such a young age) they may have often found themselves fighting over foolish things, and letting stress, anxiety and uncontrolled emotions get the best of them. These were scary times for all, specially given that their means were limited and their future wasn't totally promised. Still, they understood where everyone was coming from with their words and actions, and, after an initial brawl, they would come to their senses and make peace with one another. As they all knew, no one felt completely supported and safe, and so it was easy for them to become overly emotional and hostile, and lash out without meaning to. In spite of that, they still provided a place of comfort and protection for each other, where everyone was valued and treated equally. No one would be cast aside. I must say, though, being forced to be so often together, and through so many life changes and tribulations, might've not been super easy on them, particularly for the ones who cherished their personal space the most. It was too much, too soon. These people were finding themselves still, exploring life and the world around them, and they certainly wished to have a little bit more space and time to do all of this.

seokjin:

in general, seokjin feels that life is following its natural course. things are as they should be, and he doesn't seem to question it. he feels that he has already achieved a lot so far and is proud of it, although he is slowly changing his perspective on some aspects of life. jin seems to have some new goals in mind that he never considered before and intends to explore new horizons.

the word to summarize seokjin's life at the moment is: changes. in the realm of love, things have taken a different turn than expected, and now he's contemplative about it. in the financial area, things are going well. In the professional field, seokjin seems to be reflecting on the past and is somewhat apprehensive about what lies ahead. a sense of nostalgia and impatience.

namjoon:

in my previous reading about who from BTS was in a relationship some time ago, i saw that namjoon was in a relationship where things seemed to be falling apart. this still occupies a significant part of his life and is currently affecting his energies. he cares about the person he's with, but the current dynamics of this relationship are emotionally draining for both of them. he clings to moments from the past and the solid things he's built to keep moving forward.

in his professional and financial life, he enjoys the professional path he's on right now, and namjoon is passionate about his work, which makes him happy. however, he will soon be facing new things (which may be related to enlistment), and he feels that because of this, he'll be missing out on good growth opportunities in these areas.

yoongi:

yoongi feels that at the moment, he has everything that should theoretically be enough to make him happy, but in practice, that's not the case. he has been realizing more and more that the things he once idealized as happiness may not bring as much joy as he would like. he feels that there are problems he can't resolve even now, which brings him anxiety. in his love life, he's feeling free, probably single, and not looking to get seriously involved with anyone. in his professional life, yoongi enjoys his work, but "duty calls," and this likely relates to mandatory military service, but he sees this in a good way. in his financial life, he feels fulfilled.

hoseok:

someone is very happy with life lately... hoseok is in love! the cards in the love field are great and indicate that he has met someone with whom he feels a deep connection, has personality compatibility, and makes him happy. so, he's willing to invest in this relationship. in his professional life, hoseok misses using his creative side and has been having interesting experiences relying on his rational side most of the time. hoseok may have discovered his talent for problem-solving and being tested. financially, everything is flowing well, and he's learning more about how to spend his money meaningfully.

jimin:

the current energy in jimin's life seems to revolve around making choices, and he doesn't appear to be very happy about it. i would say he's facing a decision between something he doesn't want and something that causes him anxiety. combining the cards I've drawn for all areas of his life, I would suggest this is related to his professional life. he really wants to embark on new projects, feeling that he can do more and evolve as an artist, but there seem to be complications in his path regarding this. in the realm of love, he's getting along very well with someone. it might not be a serious relationship, but there's something there. financially, like yoongi, jimin feels fulfilled.

taehyung:

taehyung's life doesn't seem to be following the script he expected, which is interfering with the personal goals he had set for himself. he feels that he must put in even more effort to make things go the way he planned, even though not everything is within his control to change, and this frustrates him. in the realm of love, he feels like he's back to square one; someone has shattered his expectations of a happy relationship, and a part of him is disillusioned with love. in his professional life, taehyung believes that his recently released album was a game-changer for him. he's very satisfied and feels that it will further enhance his relevance as an artist, and it has also brought back some of the sparkle of feeling like a star for him. financially, everything is going well, but he has ambitions for more.

jungkook:

jungkook seems to be divided about how he feels about his life. there are parts that he considers to be great, while others not so much. he still feels that there are things he can't change, irretrievable things he no longer has access to, and he tries to distract himself from this by focusing on his work, taking care of himself, and seeking new things. in his professional life, jungkook is satisfied with what he has achieved and now feels confident enough as an artist. his recent releases have given him a good response, strengthening his ability to be an artist in his own right. financially, "money comes and goes so quickly... i don't care about it that much, but it's wise for me to seek more, just in case."

in the realm of love... jungkook has just met the person he will marry in the future, even though he hasn't even thought about marriage yet. she's a foreigner. they've been getting along well, perhaps they met at an event or a party with mutual friends. jungkook already has romantic interest in her.

⭐BTS 2023 - 2025 Outlook - Oracle and Tarot Reading

[This reading covers the currently foreseen potentials from 2023 to 2025 for all members of BTS. This reading contains collective energetic analysis and individual personal outlooks for all members.]

Reading Performed: January 12, 2023 Posted: January 14, 2023

For this reading, I wanted to keep it simple as there are not any important things happening that could influence the collective, and this reading is meant to cover the time period between all seven of them going through and coming out of their mandatory military service, which is intended to be complete by the end of 2025. With this, I’ve just done an energetic observation of the current and recently passed states of being for the group and individuals, and have also done an energetic outlook observation for the group and individuals in 2025. Here, we can begin with the group’s projection and outlook.

On the left side, this set represents the group's last energetic projection when they were all together as a unit. The centerpiece is The Poet, which is about creative and honest expression, as well as this sense of timeless transition and personal evolution. In this context for them, this card came with this feeling of release and a tinge of grief for what was being released. It’s as if when they initially separated, as in when Jin went in for his military service, they weren’t letting go of Jin, all seven of them were letting go of their lives up to that point, who they were, and who they knew each other to be. With this, and leading up to Jin’s departure, that deep and personal questioning around who they are, what they want as individuals, and what they feel they can achieve on their own was bubbling up in all of them and for the most part, the answers came for all of them within the realm of writing, producing, and performing.

At the top, there is the Page of Pentacles with the 2 of Pentacles, which connects down to the left side with the Ace of Pentacles. These three put a lot of attention on money, finances, resources, and connections, and the assessment of these things for the sake of planning things out going forward. This can be in relation to planning out a certain budget for solo production, performance, and advertising with the company, or this is more about thinking ahead about what their careers will look like at the end of their service and getting things in order for whatever “yes” or “no” they’ll face when they come back.

After the news broke of BTS going onto group hiatus and the members pivoting to pursue solo projects, starting with J-Hope and him co-headlining a day of LollaPalooza, I wanted to do check in on each member's feelings around this and around their solo careers moving forward. This is the first of seven readings I'll be doing for BTS's energy during this time (one for each member, but since Hope is the first one to be stepping out on his own officially, I thought it fitting to start with him.

Hoseok is very excited for the future, and for the opportunity that he's getting to step out on his own. He's already getting such a big opportunity right off the bat, and this makes him feel like the future is bright for him as a solo artist. He's feeling positive about being able to express his creativity in a new way with his solo music, but he does worry that this might be happening too fast. He hasn't performed on his own besides doing solo stages for BTS, and so he's worried taking on such a big headlining spot so early on into this new career path will be too much for him. But he's not focusing on that too much, and is instead trying to focus on the fact that stepping out on his own is his change for him to try new things and be able to truly showcase himself in a way he hasn't been able to before.

He's following his instincts when it comes to his creativity and music, and he's hoping that his artistic talents will be enough to guide him through this new career path. While he's excited at what this can do for him, he's so used to being part of a team and being in BTS. He's so used to the sense of community that being in the group brings him, and he's not sure how he's going to fare without that backbone and safety net there for him. There's a lot of trauma and hurt that he feels surrounding the group entering into hiatus, but he's trying to grow past it and focus on the positives. He's trying to look at this as a transitioning stage in his life, and as an opportunity to prove what he can do to himself. But for him to do that, he needs to let go of the fears and insecurities about himself that he's been holding onto for a long time. He's learning how to let go of these limiting mindsets that he's held about himself for so long, and he's looking to present himself to the world as his most authentic self, and release the music that he's always wanted to make but has been too scared to.

With his new music, he wants to give back to the fans. He's been so overwhelmed by how loyal and loving the ARMY has been to him throughout his career, and he wants to be able to support them back and be there for them while BTS is away as a group. He's trying to find the balance between being j-hope the BTS member and j-hope the solo artist, but it's difficult for him to not feel like he's letting one of the sides down. He knows this path will bring him more abundance than he's ever had before, and will bring him so much happiness. He just hopes it will go as well as he thinks it will. Him and the members took a lot of time to reflect before they made this decision, and he knows now that this is the best decision that he can make, not only for the fans, but for himself as well.

His intentions are pure, and all he wants is for the fans to be able to see everything he's always wanted them to do. This is a new beginning for him, and he's ready for it.

⭒ What the company intended to be their points of attraction:

This spread states the obvious: BTS, as the first male group of BigHit, was meant to introduce them to that side of the idol industry; and, as a lot of money and planning was put into debuting this group, they had very high hopes and expectations (even though the company was very small and there was immense competition at the time). Mind you, though, it wasn't a case of blind faith and unrealistic visions, as BigHit was sure that they had pure talent and lots of potential in their hands, and everyone involved was determined to prove it! The members were carefully chosen, with each having something very unique and extremely important for the composition of the group; and, as such, the public would certainly be attracted to at least one of the seven distinctive individuals that they were being presented with. Not only that, they also thought that they could do pretty much anything and pull off any concept due to these options. Since the boys had diverse skills and images, the group could easily adapt to anything. Now, when it comes to BTS' actual quest, it seems like they wanted them to go in a direction where they were shown as an unstoppable, outspoken and bold team. They wanted to allow them to speak up about real life issues that other groups weren't really talking about (because the idol industry wasn't all that welcoming to those) and so provoke the public/industry with those lyrics and their candid attitude - and, in that case, people should be fascinated by their fearlessness and realness.

⭒ What the members have aimed to be their points of attraction:

To begin with, the members have wanted to show themselves to be good role models, and attract fans that way before any other. For that, they maintain an image of maturity, professionalism and moral integrity. Besides that, they have always wanted people to recognize their strength, accountability and sense of commitment, as well as the stability they have as a group. Nothing and no one can rock the strong structure they have built over the years, and that should be noted by both fans and non-fans. Additionally, they have wanted to create a realistic relationship with the fans, so that they know how much the members are thankful for them and care about them, while still getting to keep their private lives private. There's a part of BTS that is wholeheartedly dedicated to their careers, but, at the same time, there's a whole other side that needs to stay away from the spotlight. By keeping things this way, they hope fans will be attracted to them for the right reasons, and recognize that they are also common people like them even though they have chosen this profession. At last, and tying back to what we saw with BigHit's intentions: their openness and honesty when it comes to issues that the idol world would normally prefer to keep hidden has been a big, big things that they have pushed forward as an attraction point. Their lyrics and many things they say in other various occassions, show that they are not scared of going about these matters (be it mental health, discrimination, difficult upbringings, etc.), and fans can always count on them to try to make a difference in those areas. In that sense, it should appeal to the humanity in those who learn about them and, hopefully, find some common ground between them despite all of the obvious differences (ethnicity, language, social standing, etc.).

⭒ Their real points of attraction (from the public p.o.v.):

Right off the bat, there's a feeling that BTS's main point of attraction isn't even something that people can describe. There's simply a magnetic quality to them that pulls us in and keeps us hooked, but we can pinpoint exactly what it is. Nonetheless, what the public has seen them accomplish in such a short period of time is certainly at play here - as none of it feels quite like something out of our reality, people can't help but be curious over what these boys have that's so special to allow them to defy so much odds and reach such heights. On the other hand, but still in relation to that, the public can clearly point out their accomplishments and material rewards. And, in that perspective, specially to the korean people, they were precious when it came down to changing the kpop industry and turning it into a real money making machine for the country. Not only did they manage to go from rags to riches themselves, but they also lifted a whole company with them, and forced the world to take a better look at the potential that korean entertainment has. On top of that, people also feel attracted to the discipline and strength that BTS has shown over the years, particularly when it comes to staying on top no matter how many others try to tear them down. Their lyrics, specially, are very important in that matter, as they are considered very powerful and noteworthy responses to hate and doubt, and so they inspire fans to also overcome issues as such (although on a smaller scale, of course). Finally, and to end on a good note, the companionship and joy that the members show when working together keeps attracting people to the group. They always seem to genuinely enjoy being around each other, and have consistently been very generous and supportive towards one another. Due to that, the public finds a lot of appeal in the good energy they have going on between them, and wish to keep on watching and being part of that.

Even if other people try to share their opinion, and tell the fs to do this or that, or that it’s better to think about something a certain way, the fs will eventually decide to do what they believe is better for them regardless of what others perceive. They understand that only they know what’s best for them. They understand that not everyone sees eye to eye with them and that’s ok, I think that this in particular is a quality that Hobi really appreciates! Although..the fs at times i quite inflexible as well. They won’t do something that they won’t want to do, they truly stick to their guns! I also feel like this person can come across as a bit of a day dreamer and someone who is not grounded or who doesn’t have their feet down on the ground. They may be into manifesting, or at the very least they believe in the opportunities before they present themselves to the fs. Starting off, at the beginning of this lifetime, there’s a focus there on The Self alongside Yin, which puts a lot of emphasis on spiritual awareness, a sense of connection with people, nature, and spirituality overall. It was not something that was “practiced” necessarily, but rather it was just part of life, it was a foundational part of her experience.

Down below with Justice over the 5 of Cups, there is recognition of the fact that while there were some upsets in the younger years, particularly a loss — feels like a loss of a father and maybe an older sibling — there was an understanding of balance and order to nature. In other words, these losses, although they were grieved, were not looked at as losses. Justice makes it seem like they’re recognized as trades or exchanges like they traded their physical body for a spiritual one, and it was just a part of nature, easier to move through. Along with this, Justice puts her in a higher position, a more mature position, as if she needed to step up for her family or community in those times of loss as well. The transition from The Self to The Maiden with Serendipity is very interesting as Serendipity literally felt like this major disturbance to the system, a complete breakdown of how things were supposed to play out in the lifetime. The image of Serendipity — a fairy being blown around on a breeze while hanging onto a four-leaf clover — seemed so eerily sinister, as if this great wind came out of nowhere and blew everything into chaos and she just had to go along with it. sumyeong isn't a strong believer when it comes to things like this. pick your fate. choose your destiny. no... not after all the hard work he had put into his life, studying to become a lawyer. not just so he could find a good job but to put people away who deserved to be punished for the crimes they committed.

not after he had poured everything in him to achieve the one dream he had after the changes in the household he grew up in. losing his mother. gaining a 'new' mother. getting a younger sister.

and for some reason, things just never fell into place. his new mother wasn't very fond of him. but he was able to escape that unwanted attention when she finally became pregnant. with another younger sister for sumyeong.

he truly didn't mind it. and when haesu came along, he really did dote on her like everyone else in the family. maybe a bit too much. because when it came down to it and haesu making decisions that would upturn her entire life... he was the one who was blamed for her actions.

and in the end, he was the one to pick up the pieces that she didn't want. that no one wanted. and he was the one who chose to leave.

and maybe it was then, that the world finally opened his eyes. made him understand why nakyung had left all those years ago too without as much of a word about why or where.

he only understood when she reached out to him, telling him to go to gwasuwon. to start over. that it was the perfect place to do so considering everything that had happened with a reassurance that she would be there to help him in any way he needed now that he had little siyang to take care of.

so he says 'no' when he's told to pick a card from the pristine deck of cards. puts his hand on top of it and pushes it away grimly. because the life that he was going to lead now, was no longer for him. it was for siyang. every step he had taken. every move he had made. everything he had done since he gave her a name and left busan was all for siyang.

there was no more, 'picking' his fate or 'choosing' his destiny.

it was about building a life. the best life, that he could for siyang so that she would never have to go through the pains he and his siblings had gone through. from family betrayal to losing dreams to true loneliness.

THE CARD FLUTTERS TO YOUR FEET. WHO WERE YOU BEFORE THIS STORY BEGAN?

“leave me alone!“

a loud shout, seeping into the floor of the small apartment. reverberating through the mess decorating the ground. a broken plate. piles of loose paper. a cup knocked over with its contents soaking into the thin carpet.

"you should have thought about that before you went around whoring yourself to anyone who was willing to sleep with you.”

“i am not a whore! i didn’t go sleeping around with anyone!”

sumyeong can hear all these things from down the hallway before he even gets to his front door, propped open as if someone had intruded unexpectedly. his mother’s shrill voice against haesu’s agitated one.

“do you think that makes a difference now? where did that bastard you call a boyfriend run to after you told him you were pregnant? huh? where is he!”

“don’t you dare call him a bastard!”

“well where is he then! you don’t want the child but you can’t get rid of it haesu, what in the world are you going to do? did you even think before you opened up your legs?”

sumyeong freezes with his hand hovering above the door handle. his ears fill with the sound of rushing blood as he realizes exactly what’s happening. and he swears, only a second passes when he calmly makes his way into his apartment, silently assessing the area when—

the sound of a hard slap echoes throughout the room.

his head is reeling from the hit. he sees stars float across the room and the ringing in his ears seems to bleed for a second too long before he pulls himself back together.

“this is all your fault. i told you. i told you to look after your younger sister! look at her now!”

“i told you to stop letting her hang out with that thug of a boyfriend of hers and now she’s pregnant. sumyeong, i only asked one thing from you.”

his eyes lift slowly, not to the woman that stands in front of him. the one he called mother. the one who blamed him for something that wasn’t his fault.

no, they go to his sister who stands to the side with tears in the corners of her eyes.

and for a moment, he thinks. why?

why was he being blamed for the outcome of haesu’s decisions. for her actions… that she chose to make as a growing young adult who knew the consequences if something did go wrong.

and his eyes fill with red—

until he really looks into her eyes and sees the utter fear in them. fear of their mother in that moment. fear of her future. fear for a child she didn’t want.

and everything. the anger. the shock. the disappointment. it all fades away and only a sense of quiet is left inside his thrumming heart.

“haesu, it’s going to be okay.”

a brand new day

a small bundle in his arms. a few boxes filled with his belongings. and himself.

that’s all he takes aboard the ship that takes him across the waters to the island of gwasuwon.

it’s all he needs to start a new life.

leaving behind his father. his mother. and his dear sister. his dreams.

once the papers had gone through, he left without as much of a word. leaving behind nothing of the slightest to give them hints on where he had left for, just as nakyung had years ago. something he knew would sting his mother.

leaving behind a life he would never be able to return to. the life he would never be able to build for himself with the dreams he had.

but it would be alright.

he hoped.

if he had nothing. it would be okay.

but he had han siyang.

and that meant, things would be more than okay.

gwasuwon had plenty of opportunities and nakyung made sure to list every single one that sumyeong could take on. yet in the end, the one that seemed most unfitting became the one sumyeong settled for.

it was tiring work, exhausting his limbs and muscles everyday for the construction that needed to be done on the island. whether it was town upgrades or repairs, sumyeong took on the job.

it was quick money and a lot with the amount of work that needed to be done.

and he was able to rest easy knowing that siyang had nakyung to take care of her at the daycare from early morning, until late at night when sumyeong would finally make his way home. more tired out of his mind than he every had in his entire life.

parts of him guilty, for not being ecstatic to come home to an infant that needed extreme care and attention after a grueling day of work. part of him unsure if whether to pity himself or to pity siyang. until his mind would go numb, and he would hold her in his arms waiting for her to fall sound asleep before he would allow himself the luxury of rest to overcome his own fatigued body.

it was like that, day after day, month after month... toiling away until the seasons began changing and siyang began growing.

and maybe, the closest thing to fate or luck, or whatever it be that sumyeong would believe it be, finally came a long year after.

"the mayor! his secretary is returning to seoul and he needs a new one immediately. you should apply sumyeong. i can ask around to get a word or two in for you."

and like nakyung had promised to be there for him, sumyeong was able to find a new job. one less physically taxing and one that allowed him more time with siyang. something he quickly found himself appreciating and being happy with after witnessing the way she would begin to smile so fully each time he spent more and more time with her.

three years later and sumyeong has never been as steady with his life. balancing a good job, running a good house routine, and being the best parent he possibly could for siyang. it wasn't to say everything was perfect, but he had finally understood what it meant to be happy with the life he was leading.
