Disclaimer: for the purposes of this story actual timelines have not been taken into account I.e Princess Diana and Prince Charles separation.

You hadn’t had to dress in your dress uniform since June when you attend the Royal Garter, but here you where fixing your sash again out of nerves you looked in the mirror before looking at the sleeping form of you fiancé in bed. Leah and her family had travelled to Windsor yesterday to watch the 26 year old footballer accept her OBE and unlike the other recipients of the awards taking place this morning they all slept at Windsor castle, you where happy to sleep in a hotel but your father had insisted on it stating family stay with family when they visit not in a hotel and it wasn’t like the castle couldn’t accommodate them.

Leah stirred slightly as you turned holding your aiguillette in order to stop them from banging together and creating noise wanting the younger girl to sleep a bit longer knowing today was going to be long. You walked towards the bed and leaning down you kissed her head “I’ll see you shortly my love.” Watching her a moment longer you left knowing your Equerry James was standing waiting to give you the rundown of the day.

You had attended a few meetings before the ceremony regarding the statement that would be made at the end of the month regarding your engagement to Leah, you refused to make any decisions without her input stating that whatever information you received would be relayed back to her. You had left that meeting to a flurry of texts from Leah and Amanda, both looking for you in a form of panic as Leah grew more nervous of this afternoon’s ceremony. You called Leah immediately and you could have sworn the ringtone hadn’t even sounded before she answered “hello my love.” Leah sighed hearing your voice “everything ok.” Leah shook her head before realising you couldn’t see her “I don’t think I can do this Y/n.” You looked around the corridor of the castle before walking down towards the left and stopping when you came across the window you where looking for peering out of it you could see into the apartment you had left this morning now though you could see Leah pacing the room with Amanda sat on the couch both dressed. You smiled before beginning to talk again “your already halfway through Le.” Leah shook her head “that doesn’t make sense Y/n the ceremony isn’t for another hour and a half I’m not even close to being half way done.” You smiled once again watching Amanda try to get Leah to sit “your already dressed, your hair is done and although I tell you every morning you don’t need it you have makeup on although on a day like today I understand so you are already ready for the ceremony waiting for it to happen after those two it only has to happen and then we go out later, that’s four things on a check list two completed two to go your halfway done.” Leah sighed again “you always know what to say.” You laughed “if I didn’t by now then you should reevaluate our relationship it’s my job to know you.” Leah smiled before stopping “wait can you see me.” You laughed again watching Amanda and Leah look around the room trying to figure out where you could see them “I told you, you call, you ever need me in moments you feel like no one can see you I can, I see you.” Leah turned looking out the window before spotting you waving at her “oh I love you.” You laughed nodding along “I know but I loved you first.” Leah laughed at the statement you made every time she told you she loved you, you had said you had fallen in love with her when you where on a royal engagement with your older brothers to the Arsenal academy as a kid. You had never publicly had a relationship until her and even then it was rather private stating you had known from the moment your hands touched you knew there was nobody else and even stated you didn’t mind waiting as she dated other people because you knew it was going to be you who she loved last. You smiled at her once more before talking again “I better go I have a meeting with Will about you know what, see you shortly darling.” Leah blew you a kiss before hanging up and turning to her mum who had been watching the interaction.

You stood down the hall waiting for the Williamson family to arrive fixing you uniform nervously before your head shot up at the sound of a wolf whistle, you couldn’t help you face become hot at the sight of Leah walking at a fast pass in order to reach you “I love it when you wear your uniform, your keeping that on all day.” You smiled nodding “sort of have to but I can take the jacket off when we start dancing later thank god.” Leah smiled before placing her hands either side of you cheeks pulling you into a kiss “I’m so proud of you.” Now it was Leah’s turn to blush “seriously Le I am and I worry I never tell you enough but I’m proud of you for one everything you have accomplished in your football career, two for how high you have held your head through these difficult months but mostly I’m proud of you I’m proud of you knowing who you are, never forgetting where you came from while you look forward to where you want to go in the future for understanding you have a voice and using it not just when the public see, I’m proud of all the time you have been in so much pain and admitted to it, whether it is your acl or your endometriosis I’m proud of you not letting anything or anyone define you and I’m proud to be your fiancé I will tell you that I love you how much I have always loved you till I can no longer speak but I need you to know I’m also just as proud of you, thank you for loving me, allowing me to love you, for taking on the crazy that I and my family are and the burden our status brings, for being there when I need you for collecting me and all the baggage but thank you mostly for your support I hope I have supported you as much as you have and will always need because you are always there for me.” Leah melted into your arms “don’t make me cry before I have to go stand in-front of your brother and then the press.” You kissed the top of her head chuckling slightly “but you have and I know how proud and loved I am from you I never understood what love was or how we are meant to only be in love with one person for the rest of our lives until I met you y/n now I don’t want anyone else to be there holding my hand in the hard times and making me smile as hard as I do in the good ones I know trust me I do.” You pulled her into a kiss once more before separating to hold her hand as her grandfather cleared his throat to gain your attention “well are you kids ready.” You nodded pulling Leah into you before turning to the door nodding to the hand stating you where ready when they were.

You stood beside Amanda holding her as Leah stepped forward to receive the award looking at you briefly at something William had said before smiling. “I can’t wait till you both get married.” You smiled at Amanda “any idea where it’s going to be yet.” You shook your head slightly “no not at all Papa has said we could use Westminster Abby, that holds roughly 2000 people but I don’t know it’s already getting televised that’s more people seeing our relationship than either her or I want if I’m being honest, he has also said we could get married here at St George’s chapel like Harry and my cousin but if I’m being honest I would marry her in a registry office with you guys as witnesses but I’m not allowed.” Amanda smiled squeezing your arm “I know your role is hard that there are so many eyes looking at you constantly wishing you harm, but she has told me that for you she would stand in front of them all and protect you no matter what, I worried about her being with you I’m ashamed to say but I did your mother died after marrying into your family, your sisters in law have been torn from limb to limb in the media, as a mother you want to protect your child and that’s all I want for her happiness and protected and for a while I didn’t see you being able to protect her, but then you drove through the night after she got a concussion and you postponed meetings and appearances when she did her ankle and you sat and held her so tight yet so gently when the doctors told her she had endometriosis and you promised her and I you would find the best doctors to look after her should she ever need it, but recently you have shown me your in it for the long run with her acl injury that you would do anything to protect and support her through her worst and best and I feel so much more at peace, it’s you and her until the stars come calling and you really have shown us all that.” You pulled Amanda into a hug feeling yourself tear up. “Thank you.” Amanda laughed lightly “I should be thanking you.” You shook your head “ thank you for being the mum I always needed.” At this Amanda hugged you tighter.

William stood talking to Leah before they both turned to see you talking to Amanda “you know she never knew our mum not really anyway she was to young when she died but she is so like her in the way she loves.” Leah looked at him confused “my mum had a good heart when she fell in love with something she fell hard and she did everything she could to express it whether that be speaking about charity’s or loving her kids. Y/n loves you wholeheartedly and that is the best trait my mother could have passed down to her.” Leah smiled at him looking at you and Amanda hugging “I hope she knows I love her just as much.” William smiled “she does trust me.” William presented Leah with her badge before pulling her into a hug “and we can’t wait for you to join the family.” Leah smiled one last time before stepping back bowing slightly and walking over to you and her family. You stepped back allowing the Williamson’s to grab Leah first a habit she didn’t always appreciate but she understood before you scooped her up into a hug “my girls an OBE.” Leah laughed “I can do you one better my girls a literal princess.” You laughed grabbing her hand waving to your brother before exiting the room and into a private quarter where you couldn’t help but grab her and kiss her not caring who was watching.

“I love you.” Leah smiled into the kiss “I loved you first.” You smiled back before grabbing her into another kiss

The long, bloody lineage of private equity's looting

Tomorrow (June 3) at 1:30PM, I’m in Edinburgh for the Cymera Festival on a panel with Nina Allen and Ian McDonald.

Monday (June 5) at 7:15PM, I’m in London at the British Library with my novel Red Team Blues, hosted by Baroness Martha Lane Fox.

Fans of the Sopranos will remember the “bust out” as a mob tactic in which a business is taken over, loaded up with debt, and driven into the ground, wrecking the lives of the business’s workers, customers and suppliers. When the mafia does this, we call it a bust out; when Wall Street does it, we call it “private equity.”

It used to be that we rarely heard about private equity, but then, as national chains and iconic companies started to vanish, this mysterious financial arrangement popped up with increasing frequency. When a finance bro’s presentation on why Olive Garden needed to be re-orged when viral, there was a lot off snickering about the decline of a tacky business whose value prop was unlimited carbs. But the bro was working for Starboard Value, a hedge fund that specialized in buhying out and killing off companies, pocketing billions while destroying profitable businesses.

Starboard Value’s game was straightforward: buy a business, load it with debt, sell off its physical plant — the buildings it did business out of — pay itself, and then have the business lease back the buildings, bleeding out money until it collapsed. They pulled it with Red Lobster,and the point of the viral Olive Garden dis track was to soften up the company for its own bust out.

The bust out tactic wasn’t limited to mocking middlebrow family restaurants. For years, the crooks who ran these ops did a brisk trade in blaming the internet. Why did Sears tank? Everyone knows that the 19th century business was an antique, incapable of mounting a challenge in the age of e-commerce. That was a great smokescreen for an old-fashioned bust out that saw corporate looters make off with hundreds of millions, leaving behind empty storefronts and emptier pension accounts for the workers who built the wealth the looters stole:

Same goes for Toys R Us: it wasn’t Amazon that killed the iconic toy retailer — it was the PE bosses who extracted $200m from the chain, then walked away, hands in pockets and whistling, while the businesses collapsed and the workers got zero severance:

It’s a good racket — for the racketeers. Private equity has grown from a finance sideshow to Wall Street’s apex predator, and it’s devouring the real economy through a string of audactious bust outs, each more consequential and depraved than the last.

As PE shows that it can turn profitable businesses gigantic windfalls, sticking the rest of us with the job of sorting out the smoking craters they leave behind, more and more investors are piling in. Today, the PE sector loves a rollup, which is when they buy several related businesses and merge them into one firm. The nominal business-case for a rollup is that the new, bigger firm is more “efficient.” In reality, a rollup’s strength is in eliminating competition. When all the pet groomers, or funeral homes, or urgent care clinics for ten miles share the same owner, they can raise prices, lower wages, and fuck over suppliers.

They can also borrow. A quirk of the credit markets is that a standalone small business is valued at about 3–5x its annual revenues. But if that business is part of a large firm, it is valued at 10–20x annual turnover. That means that when a private equity company rolls up a comedy club, ad agency or water bottler (all businesses presently experiencing PE rollup), with $1m in annual revenues, it shows up on the PE company’s balance sheet as an asset worth $10–20m. That’s $10–20m worth of collateral the PE fund can stake for loans that let it buy and roll up more small businesses.

2.9 million Boomer-owned businesses, employing 32m people, are expected to sell in the next couple years as their owners retire. Most of these businesses will sell to PE firms, who can afford to pay more for them as a prelude to a bust out than anyone intending to operate them as a productive business could ever pay:

PE’s most ghastly impact is felt in the health care sector. Whole towns’ worth of emergency rooms, family practices, labs and other health firms have been scooped up by PE, which has spent more than $1t since 2012 on health acquisitions:

Once a health care company is owned by PE, it is significantly more likely to commit medicare fraud. It also cuts wages and staffing for doctors and nurses. PE-owned facilities do more unnecessary and often dangerous procedures. Appointments get shorter. The companies get embroiled in kickback scandals. PE-backed dentists hack away at children’s mouths, filling them full of root-canals.

The Healthcare Private Equity Association boasts that its members are poised to spend more than $3t to create “the future of healthcare.”

As bad as PE is for healthcare, it’s worse for long-term care. PE-owned nursing homes are charnel houses, and there’s a particularly nasty PE scam where elderly patients are tricked into signing up for palliative care, which is never delivered (and isn’t needed, because the patients aren’t dying!). These fake “hospices” get huge payouts from medicare — and the patient is made permanently ineligible for future medicare, because they are recorded being in their final decline:

Every part of the health care sector is being busted out by PE. Another ugly PE trick, the “club deal,” is devouring the medical supply business. Club deals were huge in the 2000s, destroying rent-controlled housing, energy companies, Mervyn’s department stores, Harrah’s, and Old Country Joe. Now it’s doing the same to medical supplies:

Private equity is behind the mass rollup of single-family homes across America. Wall Street landlords are the worst landlords in America, who load up your rent with junk fees, leave your home in a state of dangerous disrepair, and evict you at the drop of a hat:

As these houses decay through neglect, private equity makes a bundle from tenants and even more borrowing against the houses. In a few short years, much of America’s desperately undersupplied housing stock will be beyond repair. It’s a bust out.

Both books describe the bust out from the inside. For example, PetSmart — looted for $30 billion by RaymondSvider and his PE fund BC Partners — is a slaughterhouse for animals. The company systematically neglects animals — failing to pay workers to come in and feed them, say, or refusing to provide backup power to run during power outages, letting animals freeze or roast to death. Though PetSmart has its own vet clinics, the company doesn’t want to pay its vets to nurse the animals it damages, so it denies them care. But the company is also too cheap to euthanize those animals, so it lets them starve to death. PetSmart is also too cheap to cremate the animals, so its traumatized staff are ordered to smuggle the dead, rotting animals into random dumpsters.

All this happened while PetSmart’s sales increased by 60%, matched by growth in the company’s gross margins. All that money went to the bust out.

Tkacik says these books show that we’re finally getting wise to PE. Back in the Clinton years, the PE critique painted the perps as sharp operators who reduced quality and jacked up prices. Today, books like these paint these “investors” as the monsters they are — crooks whose bust ups are crimes, not clever finance hacks.

Take the Carlyle Group, which pioneered nursing home rollups. As Carlyle slashed wages, its workers suffered — but its elderly patients suffered more. Thousands of Carlyle “customers” died of “dehydration, gangrenous bedsores, and preventable falls” in the pre-covid years.

KKR, another PE monster, bought a second-hand chain of homes for mentally disabled adults from another PE company, then squeezed it for the last drops of blood left in the corpse. KKR cut wages to $8/hour and increased shifts to 36 hours, then threatened to have workers who went home early arrested and charged with “patient abandonment.” Many of these homes were often left with no staff at all, with patients left to starve and stew in their own waste.

PE loves to pick on people who can’t fight back: kids, sick people, disabled people, old people. No surprise, then, that PE loves prisons — the ultimate captive audience. HIG Capital is a $55b fund that owns TKC Holdings, who got the contract to feed the prisoners at 400 institutions. They got the contract after the prisons fired Aramark, owned by PE giant Warburg Pincus, whose food was so inedible that it provoked riots. TKC got a million bucks extra to take over the food at Michigan’s Kinross Correctional Facility, then, incredibly, made the food worse. A chef who refused to serve 100 bags of rotten potatoes (“the most disgusting thing I’ve seen in my life”) was fired:

TKC doesn’t just operate prison kitchens — it operates prison commissaries, where it gouges prisoners on junk food to replace the inedible slop it serves in the cafeteria. The prisoners buy this food with money they make working in the prison workshops, for $0.10–0.25/hour. Those workshops are also run by TKC.

Tkacic traces private equity back to the “corporate raiders” of the 1950s and 1960s, who “stealthily borrowed money to buy up enough shares in a small or midsized company to control its biggest bloc of votes, then force a stock swap and install himself as CEO.”

The most famous of these raiders was Eli Black, who took over United Fruit with this gambit — a company that had a long association with the CIA, who had obligingly toppled democratically elected governments and installed dictators friendly to United’s interests (this is where the term “banana republic” comes from).

Eli Black’s son is Leon Black, a notorious PE predator. Leon Black got his start working for the junk-bonds kingpin Michael Milken, optimizing Milken’s operation, which was the most terrifying bust out machine of its day, buying, debt-loading and wrecking a string of beloved American businesses. Milken bought 2,000 companies and put 200 of them through bankruptcy, leaving the survivors in a brittle, weakened state.

It got so bad that the Business Roundtable complained about the practice to Congress, calling Milken, Black, et al, “a small group is systematically extracting the equity from corporations and replacing it with debt, and incidentally accumulating major wealth.”

Black stabbed Milken in the back and tanked his business, then set out on his own. Among the businesses he destroyed was Samsonite, “a bankrupt-but-healthy company he subjected to 12 humiliating years of repeated fee extractions, debt-funded dividend payments, brutal plant closings, and hideous schemes to induce employees to buy its worthless stock.”

The money to buy Samsonite — and many other businesses — came through a shadowy deal between Black and John Garamendi, then a California insurance commissioner, now a California congressman. Garamendi helped Black buy a $6b portfolio of junk bonds from an insurance company in a wildly shady deal. Garamendi wrote down the bonds by $3.9b, stealing money “from innocent people who needed the money to pay for loved ones’ funerals, irreparable injuries, etc.”

Black ended up getting all kinds of favors from powerful politicians — including former Connecticut governor John Rowland and Donald Trump. He also wired $188m to Jeffrey Epstein for reasons that remain opaque.

Black’s shady deals are a marked contrast with the exalted political circles he travels in. Despite private equity’s obviously shady conduct, it is the preferred partner for cities and states, who buy everything from ambulance services to infrastructure from PE-owned companies, with disastrous results. Federal agencies turn a blind eye to their ripoffs, or even abet them. 38 state houses passed legislation immunizing nursing homes from liability during the start of the covid crisis.

PE barons are shameless about presenting themselves as upstanding cits, unfairly maligned. When Obama made an empty promise to tax billionaires in 2010, Blackstone founder SteveS chwarzman declared, “It’s a war. It’s like when Hitler invaded Poland in 1939.”

Since we’re on the subject of Hitler, this is a good spot to bring up Monowitz, a private-sector satellite of Auschwitz operated by IG Farben as a slave labor camp to make rubber and other materiel it supplied at a substantial markup to the wermacht. I’d never heard of Monowitz, but Tkacik’s description of the camp is chilling, even in comparison to Auschwitz itself.

Farben used slave laborers from Auschwitz to work at its rubber plant, but was frustrated by the logistics of moving those slaves down the 4.5m stretch of road to the facility. So the company bought 25,000 slaves — preferring children, who were cheaper — and installed them in a co-located death-camp called Monowitz:

Monowitz was — incredibly — worse than Auschwitz. It was so bad, the SS guards who worked at it complained to Berlin about the conditions. The SS demanded more hospitals for the workers who dropped from beatings and overwork — Farben refused, citing the cost. The factory never produced a steady supply of rubber, but thanks to its gouging and the brutal treatment of its slaves, the camp was still profitable and returned large dividends to Farben’s investors.

Apologists for slavery sometimes claim that slavers are at least incentivized to maintain the health of their captive workforce. This was definitely not true of Farben. Monowitz slaves died on average after three months in the camp. And Farben’s subsidiary, Degesch, made the special Zyklon B formulation used in Auschwitz’s gas chambers.

Tkacik’s point is that the Nazis killed for ideology and were unimaginably cruel. Farben killed for money — and they were even worse. The banality of evil gets even more banal when it’s done in service to maximizing shareholder value.

Farben’s connection to the Nazis was a the subject of Germany’s Master Plan: The Story of Industrial Offensive, a 1943 bestseller by Borkin, who was also an antitrust lawyer. It described how Farben had manipulated global commodities markets in order to create shortages that “guaranteed Hitler’s early victories.”

Master Plan became a rallying point in the movement to shatter corporate power. But large US firms like Dow Chemical and Standard Oil waged war on the book, demanding that it be retracted. Borkin was forced into resignation and obscurity in 1945.

Meanwhile, in Nuremberg, 24 Farben executives were tried for their war crimes, and they cited their obligations to their shareholders in their defense. All but five were acquitted on this basis.

Seen in that light, the plunderers of today’s PE firms are part of a long and dishonorable tradition, one that puts profit ahead of every other priority or consideration. It’s a defense that wowed the judges at Nuremberg, so should we be surprised that it still plays in 2023?

Tkacik is frustrated that neither of these books have much to offer by way of solutions, but she understands why that would be. After all, if we can’t even close the carried interest tax loophole, how can we hope to do anything meaningful?

“Carried interest” comes up in every election cycle. Most of us assume it has something to do with “interest payments,” but that’s not true. The carried interest loophole relates to the “interest” that 16th-century sea captains had in their cargo. It’s a 600-year-old tax loophole that private equity bosses use to pay little or no tax on their billions. The fact that it’s still on the books tells you everything you need to know about whether our political class wants to do anything about PE’s plundering.

Notwithstanding Tkacik’s (entirely justified) skepticism of the weaksauce remedies proposed in these books, there is some hope of meaningful action. Private equity’s rollups are only possible because they skate under the $101m threshold for merger scrutiny. However, there is good — but unenforced — law that allows antitrust enforcers to block these mergers. This is the “incipiency standard” — Sec 7 of the Clayton Act — the idea that a relatively small merger might not be big enough to trigger enforcement action on its own, but regulators can still act to block it if it creates an incipient monopoly.

The US has a new crop of aggressive — fearless — top antitrust enforcers and they’ve been systematically reviving these old laws to go after monopolies.

That’s long overdue. Markets are machines for eroding our moral values: “In comparison to non-market decisions, moral standards are significantly lower if people participate in markets.”

A book on the subject (haven't read it myself):

One of the sources in another one of Alisa's furiously impassioned twitter threads have been debunked, so I didn't include that. But she claims that her own family was caught in the fallout zone when her mother was a baby, which eventually led to her and large numbers of her community developing cancer. It's human for that kind of grief to be caught up in inaccuracies. People are already being ghastly and racist to Hispanos and Indigenous people criticizing the hype for the movie. They're not attacking Oppenheimer for being Jewish, they're criticising the erasure of the human cost of these bombs and the continued valorisation of the U.S military's actions in World War II as some kind of moral saviourism.

While Oppenheimer himself believed that the nuclear bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were morally justified (they had planned to drop them on Germany except they surrendered before they could), he also felt had blood on his hands and regretted his role as the "Father of the Atomic Bomb". He spent the rest of his career vehemently opposing further development of thermonuclear weapons and the hydrogen bomb accurately predicting the concept of mutually assured destruction. This eventually made him a victim of Senator McCarthy's Red Scare and his clearance was revoked. I haven't seen the movie (Christopher Nolan is the kind of casual white racist I avoid on principle) but people who have seen it say that it doesn't glorify nuclear weapons and depicts the man himself with the complex moral nuance that seems to be accurately reflective of his real life.

The backlash to Indigenous and Hispanos people's criticisms and to people pointing out that Hiroshima and Nagasaki were genocides is also frustrating because...both world wars were a clash of genocidal empires. The reason they were world wars is because the countries colonized by Japan, China, the European powers and the US were all dragged into it, whether they wanted to or not. Jews were one of the many colonized peoples that suffered in that time, who were left to die by everyone until they could be used to frame the Allied powers as moral saviours, establishing a revisionist nostalgia for heroism that powers the US military industrial complex to this day.

As early as May 1942, and again in June, the BBC reported the mass murder of Polish Jews by the Nazis. Although both US President, Franklin Roosevelt, and British Prime Minister, Winston Churchill, warned the Germans that they would be held to account after the war, privately they agreed to prioritise and to turn their attention and efforts to winning the war. Therefore, all pleas to the Allies to destroy the death camp at Auschwitz-Birkenau were ignored. The Allies argued that not only would such an operation shift the focus away from winning the war, but it could provoke even worse treatment of the Jews. In June 1944 the Americans had aerial photographs of the Auschwitz complex. The Allies bombed a nearby factory in August, but the gas chambers, crematoria and train tracks used to transport Jewish civilians to their deaths were not targeted.

Uncritical consumption of World War II media is the reinforcement of imperialist propaganda, more so when one group of colonized people is used to silence other colonized peoples. Pitting white Jewry against BIPOC is to do the work of white supremacy for imperialist colonizers, and victimizes Jews of colour twice over.

Edit: friends, there's been some doubt cast on the veracity of Alisa's claims. The human cost to the Hispanos population caught downwind of the nuclear tests is very real, as was land seizure without adequate compensation. However, there's no record I can yet find about Los Alamos killing livestock and Hispanos being forced to work for Los Alamos without PPE. There is a separate issue about human testing in the development of said PPE that's not covered here. I'm turning off reblogs until I can find out more. Gee I wonder how common private gun ownership was right before the Russian revolution? Oh wait it was actually common and civilians could easily buy firearms. Here’s a print ad from the time:

Historically, many revolutions and civil wars involved the use of privately owned firearms. A really common pattern that you see going back hundreds of years is that at the outbreak of conflicts, civilians would form militias, arm themselves with whatever they could get their hands on, storm government armories, and then steal everything not nailed down.

During the Yugoslav civil war, the UN enacted an arms embargo on all sides of the war from Sept 1991 through the end of the war. The VRS split off from the JNA, so they just took those weapons with them. However, the ARBiH had to acquire weapons from a lot of different sources, such as:

Another conflict (or, more accurately, long series of conflicts) that we can also look to is the American Indian Wars. Native American combatants used a variety of weapons, but the weapons that they prized most highly were contemporary repeating rifles. Famously, repeating rifles such as the Henry lever-action rifle were contributing factors to the victory of Lakota and Cheyenne forces at the Battle of Little Bighorn in 1876. (Native Americans had been purchasing guns for hunting and combat for over a hundred years at that point. One of the earliest accounts of such a purchase was in 1750 where French traders traded flintlock muskets for horses from Wichitas and Comanches.)

Let’s take another, ongoing example: The Myanmar civil war (2021- present, as of April 2024).

Fighters in the coalition of anti-junta forces use a wide variety of small arms, but most relevant for this post is the manufacturing and use of the FGC-9, a 9mm carbine compatible with Glock magazines.

(Side note: FGC stands for Fuck Gun Control.)

The FGC-9 design uses a combination of 3D-printed parts and easily-manufactured pressure-bearing metal parts.

If you genuinely believe that there will be a revolution or civil war in your country in the future, then logically it is 100% reasonable to buy and train with guns right now.

If you genuinely believe that there will be a revolution or civil war in your country in the future, it makes absolutely no sense to hand-wave that away with “one day when the exact right circumstances emerge for a proletarian mass movement to Do Revolution, only then will we acquire even one single firearm. I’m just going to assume there won’t be massive obstacles such as arms embargoes, government crackdowns, or supply-chain issues that could completely stymie our ability to do that.”

If you genuinely believe that there will be a revolution or civil war in your country in the future wouldn’t it be better for the people on your side to already have some level of training & skill with firearms?

If you live in a country where the right wing has spent decades buying guns and salivating over the idea of starting a civil war and killing left-wingers and minorities, do you think it is a good idea to discourage left-wingers and minorities from buying guns?

CHAPTER 2: Rorie's World

Rorie was swift with delivering Penni, and perhaps even the world, what they wanted. Lewis hovered close by as she sifted through her Instagram account, selectively archiving photos with their son's face before switching it over to a public account.

Lewis couldn't help but feel a sense of pride as he looked at his wife, admiring the way her curves seemed to fit perfectly in all the right places: slender waist and widened hips that rounded out to a pert ass, all of which had become gifts after giving birth to their child, along with her full breasts that he loved to hold in his hands.

He couldn't help but feel proud and a little smug knowing that she was quite the catch; he knew she would cause quite a stir once the world got to know her.

Despite his initial concerns, Rorie's demeanor had noticeably changed. At first, it was subtle - her shoulders relaxed, her posture improved - but then as more followers and comments flooded her feed, a small smile began to appear at the corner of her mouth. It was a glimpse of that wild, unpredictable side that had initially attracted him to her all those years ago, the spark that made her a force to be reckoned with.

When they first met at a bar in New York City, she was a sharp-tongued, no-nonsense data analyst on Wall Street who had him wrapped around her finger by the end of the night. Lewis understood and admired her directness because he could relate on many levels, but he also discovered a softer side to Rorie when she talked about her interests and dreams.

Lately, however, ever since becoming a mother and throwing herself into their joint charitable foundation, Mission 44, her focus had shifted. She had become consumed by their son's well-being, pouring all her energy into nurturing him.

Don't get him wrong, Lewis adored the way Rorie doted on their son, Lyric. Seeing her gently cradle their child, singing lullabies in her melodious voice, was a sight that melted his heart every time. But he couldn't shake the lingering desire for her to rekindle the fire within herself - to dive back into her passions of music and fashion that once captivated her every thought.

There was a nagging feeling in the back of his mind, but he couldn't deny how amazing she was. He wanted to keep her all to himself, yet he also knew that her sense for both fashion and music needed to be shared with the world. Despite the unconventional approach, Lewis felt a sense of excitement brewing inside him for it all.

There was one thing that could not be doubted: Aurora Isis Phillips-Hamilton was that girl, and she needed her praises and recognition as soon as possible.

"Done," she said with a long exhale and placing her phone on the kitchen island. Running a hand through her braids, she looked like the epitome of stress as she began to pace back and forth across the hardwood floors.

Lewis watched her silently for a moment before calling out to her in a soft voice. "Baby..." Rorie was lost in thought and didn't respond. He tried again, using the nickname he gave her when they first started dating, "Aurora Borealis."

Rorie's head whipped over to him and she scowled. "Don't start with your shit, Carl," she snapped, using his middle name in return.

Lewis chuckled, knowing that nickname always got under her skin. "My bad, but I had to get your attention somehow." He raised his hands in mock surrender and took on a more serious tone. "Tell me what's worrying you. If you worried about them accepting you or not, let me—"

"It's not that," Rorie replied with an annoyed eye roll. She couldn't care less about public acceptance; all she wanted was to navigate this new situation successfully. Being in the public eye would disrupt her routine, which mostly revolved around being a mother to Lyric and supporting her husband. "I just don't know how to handle all of this."

Lewis could see the defeat and uncertainty in Rorie's eyes, and it broke his heart. He walked over to her and wrapped his arms around her protectively, placing a reassuring kiss on her temple. "Just be yourself, Rorie." She scoffed at his words. "No, seriously. Be the amazing woman you are. You're already incredible as a mum and leading Mission 44, but I want to see you on magazine covers and runways..."

"...headlining concerts and winning awards," Rorie finished for him with a teasing smirk, having heard this mantra from him countless times over the past five years.

"Yes, exactly," affirmed Lewis as he held her tighter. "The world needs to know your brilliance. Do you know how guilty I feel for keeping you cooped up in this penthouse, not sharing your genius with the world?"

She couldn't help but let out a disbelieving noise. "Funny how you're saying this now, but just wait until all these thirsty ass men flood my DMs."

A menacing glare crossed Lewis' face, a vein popping on his neck at the mere thought of some random man hopping in her DMs. "Don't play with me, Rorie, y'know I kill a nigga over you."

She studied him closely, incredulity written all over her face. He was a bit taller than her 5'4 frame, but she still couldn't imagine him as a killer. "Whatever you say, Pookie."

Her choice of endearment made him roll his eyes, but he couldn't help but smile at her playfulness. It was yet another thing he loved about her; she always knew how to make him laugh even in the most serious situations. But his smile quickly faded as the weight of their conversation settled on him once again. He knew Rorie was struggling with the idea of being in the public eye, and it hurt him to see her doubt herself.

"Listen, Rorie," he began, looking into her eyes with sincerity. "I know this is all new to you and it can be overwhelming. But I promise you, I will be by your side every step of the way."

Rorie's expression softened at his words, feeling grateful for his unwavering support. She leaned into him, resting her head against his chest as he continued.

"You are strong and talented and beautiful," Lewis said, placing a kiss on top of her head. "You have nothing to be afraid of."

Lewis always had a way of making her feel better whenever she was feeling down. They had been through so much together over the years and their bond only grew stronger each day.

Just then, Lyric's cries could be heard from down the hall. Rorie quickly pulled away from Lewis' embrace and headed towards their son's room. As she rocked Lyric back and forth, Rorie thought about the past five years. Despite the ups and downs of their relationship, she never imagined a life without Lewis by her side.

Almost two weeks later.....

Rorie broke the internet...figuratively, of course.

In the span of one week, she amassed a following of over four million and attracted support from a swarm of people. Famous individuals, media conglomerates, and fashion brands all wanted a piece of her, flooding her DMs with invitations to events, photo shoots, interviews, you name it.

Rorie was grateful for the opportunities that were coming her way, but it was also overwhelming. Despite being physically distant in Montreal, Lewis continued to support her and be her biggest advocate. With Penni’s help, Rorie had assembled a small yet highly effective management team consisting of Yael Quint, a specialist in brand and image consulting; Ro Morgan, a skilled hairstylist; and Fanny Maurer, an expert makeup artist. Together, they were gearing up to face their first challenge: the highly-anticipated Paris Fashion Week.

Amidst all the chaos, Lyric remained her top priority.Lewis had been away competing in the Canadian Grand Prix and he checked on her and Lyric through daily FaceTime calls. On the third day of Lewis' absence, he called late in the evening before he had to head off to qualifying session for the upcoming race.

"Hey beautiful," he said as soon as Rorie answered his call.

"Hey handsome," she replied with a smile.

"How are my two favorite people doing?" Lewis asked.

"We're good," Rorie said, gently swaying back and forth, holding Lyric in her arms. Her son had finally fallen into a peaceful slumber, sucking his thumb as he dozed off after throwing a fit.

"Has he been giving you a hard time?" Lewis joked.

Rorie chuckled, "Just a little. But it's nothing I can't handle."

"I know you can," Lewis said with pride in his voice. "I wish I could be there to help."

"I wish you were here too," Rorie admitted, feeling a pang of loneliness.

"Just a few more days and I'll be back," Lewis reassured her. "But hey, enough about me. How's everything going at your end?"

Rorie sighed, "It's been hectic but exciting. We have some big plans lined up for Paris Fashion Week."

"Mugler, Jean Paul Gaultier, and Balenciaga," she listed off quickly, eliciting a cheesy grin from Lewis.

"Some of your favorites," he acknowledged and she nodded in agreement. "Don't forget Rick Owens too; I'm planning to take you with me to one of his showrooms so we can see him and his wife in action."

"I can't wait," she said, a grin spreading across her face.

"Me neither," Lewis said with a smile that reached his eyes. "Just make sure to save some energy for Mummy/Daddy time when I get back."

His words were blunt, but there was also suggestive twinkle in his eye.

Rorie let out a soft gasp and scolded him, placing a hand over their sleeping son's ear. "Lewis, you can't say those things around him," she chided. "He's literally sleeping on my chest right now."

But Lewis couldn't resist teasing her, leering at her slightly exposed breasts with a smirk. "Shit, that's where I'm trying to be at the moment," he joked. "Plus, he's knocked out. He doesn't even know what's going on."

Lyric was indeed in a deep sleep, snoring softly. But Rorie couldn't let it slide.

"It's the principle," she shrugged off nonchalantly. "You can't be saying that."

"Oh my goodness, I'm gonna hang up," threatened Rorie, her finger hovering over the end button. "I can't believe your so horny on main."

Lewis laughed at Rorie's threat, his dimples deepening as he playfully pouted. "Come on, babe. Don't hang up on me," he pleaded in a mock-whiny tone. "I miss you and I can't help it if my mind is always on you."

Rorie rolled her eyes but couldn't suppress the smile tugging at the corners of her lips. Even after years of marriage, Lewis never failed to make her feel desired.

"Fine," she relented, pretending to give in with a sigh. "But keep it PG-rated, okay? Our son's still here."

"You got it," Lewis said, sending her a wink through the screen before sitting up straighter in his seat. "So what else is going on? Have there been any discussions about collaborations or endorsements?"

"Endorsing who?" Rorie nervously giggled. "Let's just focus on Paris Fashion Week for now, we can worry about endorsements later. I have no idea about any of that."

"I don't know," Lewis said, "maybe Dior, Swarovski? Or even Tommy Hilfiger?"

"If you want me to join in on a campaign with you, just ask," she mumbled, partly in jest.

"Alright," Lewis replied, way too calmly for her liking. "Join me on a Tommy Hilfiger campaign."

Rorie couldn't believe her ears. She had always dreamt of working with a major fashion brand like Tommy Hilfiger, and now her husband was suggesting it as a possibility.

"Be so fucking for real right now. Are you serious?" she asked, her eyes widening in excitement.

"I'm so for real," Lewis confirmed with a nod. "Tommy's been looking for a new face to represent their brand. I'll mention you to him and see if he's interested."

Rorie's heart raced with anticipation. This would be insane and the fact that she could be doing it alongside her husband only made it more special.

"Thank you so much, Lewis," Rorie gushed, tears threatening to spill from her eyes.

"You don't have to thank me," Lewis said with a smile, his love for her shining through his words. "I'll do anything to see you succeed."

Rorie felt overwhelmed with emotion as she leaned closer towards the screen, wishing she could wrap him in a tight hug.

Just then, they heard a soft whimper from their son and both turned their attention towards him. Rorie gently rocked him back and forth until he settled down again.

"I miss you guys so much," Lewis said wistfully, his eyes lingering on his family before turning back to Rorie's face on the screen.

"We miss you too," Rorie replied softly, feeling a surge of longing for her husband.

"This distance sucks dick," Lewis murmured before quickly shaking his head. "Sorry, I didn't mean it like that."

"I know what you meant," Rorie assured him with a small smile. They both knew how hard long distance relationships were, but they were determined to make it work until they could be together again. "You have two days then we're together in Paris. Two days will go by so fast, Pookie."

"I know," he said with a hint of sadness,"but I can't help missing you guys." He glanced at the time on his phone. "I have to go to the track now, but I'll text you later. I love you."

"Love you too," Rorie replied before blowing him a kiss. Lewis caught it and placed it against his heart before ending their call.

Two days later, Rorie arrived in the romantic City of Love with Lewis by her side. She had been to Paris countless times before with him, friends, and even family, but she knew this trip would be different. It was her first time attending Paris Fashion Week and the city was bustling with people. The next few days would be a whirlwind of fashion shows, meetings with designers, and indulgent dinners at some of the city's most charming restaurants.

Rorie clung to Lewis like a lifeline, knowing she would need all the support she could get to survive it all. As they made their way to their hotel, she silently hoped that no one would discover she was there with her husband until she was ready to reveal it herself. With their son safely back home in Monaco with Nina, the couple finally had some time alone - and he intended to make every moment count.

Rorie's eyes widened in surprise. She couldn't believe what she was hearing. The possibility of working with big names in the industry was something she had only dreamed about before.

"No fuckin' way?!" she exclaimed, grinning widely. "Who?"

Yael smirked, clearly enjoying Rorie's reaction. She leaned in closer and whispered, "Lancome wants you to do a makeup campaign."

Rorie's mouth dropped open in shock. Lancome was one of the biggest beauty companies in the world and being approached by them was like winning the lottery.

"Are you serious?!" Rorie exclaimed excitedly.

"I never joke about business matters," Yael replied with a sly smile. "I've already set up meetings for next week with Lancome. You're going to kill it."

Rorie couldn't contain her excitement as she hugged Yael tightly.

"Thank you so much for everything," Rorie said sincerely.

Yael patted her back before pulling away and and raising her glass of champagne to clink it against Rorie's.

"Don't thank me yet," Yael said playfully. "This is just the beginning, Rorie."

With a loud pop, the cork of the Dom Perignon bottle flew into the air as bubbly liquid sprayed onto the floor, causing her to burst into a fit of giggles and Lewis to let out a curse under his breath.

"Shit," he said once the bubbles had settled and he managed to pour some into a glass. "I didn't mean for that to happen."

He handed her a glass and poured one for himself before raising it in a toast. He usually refrained from drinking, but this was a special occasion - his wife was making waves in the fashion world and she was currently in talks with Lancome for a partnership on a campaign.

When he heard this news, he immediately ordered a private dinner in their suite to celebrate. Lewis had ordered all of Rorie's favorite dishes from the hotel's restaurant and as they sat together at the beautifully set table, Rorie couldn't help but feel overwhelmed with gratitude. She looked over at her husband, who was smiling at her lovingly.

"I can't believe all of this is happening," she said, taking a sip from her chute.

"I can," Lewis replied confidently. "You deserve it, baby."

Rorie smiled, feeling proud and grateful to have such a supportive partner by her side.

"And I have a feeling there's more good news to come," he added with a mischievous grin.

"What do you mean?" Rorie inquired, her eyebrow raising with curiosity.

Lewis let out a light chuckle before reaching underneath the table and retrieving a small velvet box. Sliding it across the table towards Rorie, she gasped in surprise.

"What is this?" she exclaimed, her eyes sparkling with excitement.

"Open it and see," Lewis replied with a grin.

Rorie eagerly lifted the lid of the box to reveal a stunning pair of diamond earrings. "Oh my goodness, Lewis! These are...they're incredible!" Rorie exclaimed, tears welling up in her eyes.

Lewis reached across the table to take her hand in his. "I wanted to give these to you as a congratulatory gift for your achievements today. And also as a belated anniversary present."

Rorie's face lit up with joy as she threw her arms around his neck and pulled him into a loving embrace.

She whispered into Lewis' ear in a seductive tone, "You're definitely getting some pussy tonight."

His breath caught in his throat and his arousal was immediate. "Damn, baby, is it like that?"

"It's exactly like that," she confirmed with a wink as they pulled away from each other.

"If I didn't know any better, I'd think you were trying to give Lyric a sibling," Lewis teased.

Year Round-up

Hosted Games has sent me the royalty statement for June, which means I have data from June 2022 to June 2023 — marking one year since The Rose was released.

These are the numbers:

They add to a total of 18,236 copies sold.😭😭 This is... beyond my wildest dreams. I am so, so grateful to everyone who bought it and reviewed it. You have my eternal gratitude.❤ I know this number is probably really small compared with more successful and popular stories, but to me, this is mind-blowing.

Eighteen thousand people! I can't even imagine a crowd that big in my mind's eye; it seems ridiculous. It seems unreal. It seems, like the story of Romanus, fictional. But here I am, pinching myself and realizing it is real life.

When I submitted the game for publication, I privately hoped to sell 10k copies in the first year — I didn't say that number out loud to anyone because I felt like it was a silly, unrealistic dream, and yet you passed it by more than 8k. My new hope is that it'll get to 20k copies sold by the second year, so fingers crossed!

I really am so grateful. I said this on my Patreon already, but writing this game, and immersing myself in this community has literally changed my life. Because of the incredible support from Patreon, starting September, I'll be able to cut down the hours on my day job so that I'll have more time to dedicate to writing Book Two — I'll have full Mondays and half Thursdays completely free to write! 🎉

I'm so excited!!!! Writing full-time would be a dream come true — one that, like that 10k number, I always thought to be impossible, but slowly, gradually, maybe it isn't such a silly hope after all. Maybe it can happen. This is certainly a step in the right direction.

And because of your support here, in this blog, motivating me when I was feeling burned out or insecure about my writing, I was able to keep going. I don't have the time, unfortunately, to answer as many ask and spend as much time here as I once had, but I adore this blog and this platform, and I am forever glad I made the decision to make an account and press that publish button for the first time, all the way back on 2019.

As a celebration and a gesture of appreciation, when I finish coding this chapter I'm working on, I'll open early access on Patreon and then release the first demo of Book Two to the public! I'm already getting nervous in anticipation. 😄
