Animal of the Day!

Prairie Ringneck Snake (Diadophis punctatus arnyi)

Conservation Status- Least Concern

Habitat- Eastern United States; Southwestern United States

Size (Weight/Length)- 35 cm

Diet- Small amphibians; Worms; Small reptiles

Cool Facts- Now these little dudes are a welcome sight for urban explorers in the Midwestern United States. The prairie ringneck snake has a relatively small mouth for its size. These snakes have an extremely mild venom that can immobilize frogs and lizards but can’t harm people. Once their prey is immobilized, the prairie ringneck snake chomps down and constricts around the animal until it stops breathing. They commonly hide underneath logs and rocks due to their more passive behavior. This can lead to people picking up tarps or old rocks and finding these small snakes. Deceptively, their bright bellies are not used to signify their danger. Instead, the prairie ringneck snake will go belly-up to draw attention away from its head. 

Rating- 13/10 (I can’t describe how badly I want to find one of these guys under my patio.)

He lay like a filthy leech, exhausted with his repletion. I shuddered as I bent over to touch him, and every sense in me revolted at the contact; but I had to search, or I was lost. The coming night might see my own body a banquet in a similar way to those horrid three. I felt all over the body, but no sign could I find of the key. Then I stopped and looked at the Count. There was a mocking smile on the bloated face which seemed to drive me mad. This was the being I was helping to transfer to London, where, perhaps, for centuries to come he might, amongst its teeming millions, satiate his lust for blood, and create a new and ever-widening circle of semi-demons to batten on the helpless. The very thought drove me mad. A terrible desire came upon me to rid the world of such a monster. There was no lethal weapon at hand, but I seized a shovel which the workmen had been using to fill the cases, and lifting it high, struck, with the edge downward, at the hateful face. But as I did so the head turned, and the eyes fell full upon me, with all their blaze of basilisk horror. The sight seemed to paralyse me, and the shovel turned in my hand and glanced from the face, merely making a deep gash above the forehead. The shovel fell from my hand across the box, and as I pulled it away the flange of the blade caught the edge of the lid which fell over again, and hid the horrid thing from my sight. The last glimpse I had was of the bloated face, blood-stained and fixed with a grin of malice which would have held its own in the nethermost hell.

okay but this is legit scary af - why isn't this in ANY of the adaptations but @re-dracula until now???

Update Post - June 30th, 2023

It's been a while since my last one! Maybe because I decided to do these biweekly and skipped on an update post due to releasing the Chapter 1 Update.

(This post discusses a little about my stress, so if you don't want to see a somewhat negative post right now, please skip this 💖)

Hopped on simply to say that I'd been very excited to write Chapter 2 because a lot of the things happening would be an absolutely joy to write. I had initially decided to take a break for a week or two to celebrate, but couldn't stop thinking about writing it.

Unfortunately, projects and stress from my in real life work have come down crashing on me, and while I've finished them just a couple of days ago, I feel mentally unwell and overwhelmed by what happened, and am currently waiting on much-wanted news that is giving me a lot of anxiety.

Sorry for the downer post! 💕 I promise I'll be okay, and I'll be back to writing soon, hopefully by the next update post. :) This week has been seriously stressful, and it's hard to even feel good doing things I enjoy, even when I no longer have anything hanging over my head.

But, life goes on, and I don't want to lose the things I love and am passionate for; I'd only be miserable moping about it for so long.

Thank you guys again for your patience 💖 I'm still reading your asks, and I'm awfully sorry I haven't been answering them. I'm still trying to be active as far as reblogging MCs and art. I'm trying to invest any energy I get into the actual IF so you guys don't live off only on asks. I am sincerely grateful 💕💕
