…just some of the music that made me feel good this year… this post could be so much longer, but these are some of my most most played, most loved, albums all for different reasons.

7/1/23.
Joanna Sternberg (New York City) came to my attention a couple of times over the past couple of days, but it was the Pitchfork "Best New Album" tag for the recently released "I've Got Me" that really caught my attention.
Their music is a joy to listen to. It recalls the songwriting of Randy Newman, or Daniel Johnston. The voice and melodies also remind me a bit of Arthur Russell and Kimya Dawson. Sternberg added that they were influenced by the songs of Elliott Smith.
And finally, there is a storytelling here that reminds me of Woody Guthrie, and Kora Feder to name a few.
This is being released by Fat Possum (Mississippi). Their debut was initially released by Conor Oberst's label, Team Love.

Joanna Sternberg — I’ve Got Me (Fat Possum)
I've Got Me by Joanna Sternberg
Joanna Sternberg sounds both old and young in these songs, the hitch in their voice somehow evoking both childlike simplicity and wizened experience. This second album from the New York City native (they grew up in the Seinfeld building) likewise resonates as exceedingly fresh and Brill Building classic, with not much room for middle ground.
We often toss the term “multi-instrumentalist” round to connote guitar players who sometimes switch to bass and such like, but Sternberg is the genuine item. They wrote these songs, sing them and play all the instruments: cello, violin, guitar, piano, string bass and percussion, among others. Matt Sweeney helped out with production, but otherwise this is Sternberg all the way, 100% themself and eccentric as all get out.
This album’s persona, which I persist in imagining as Sternberg herself, is wise and vulnerable, tetchy but full of love. She’s been hurt in the ordinary ways and those specific to the music business but remains open to life and art and experience. There is nothing closed off or careful about the person who wrote these songs. “I’ll make you mine,” they confide with a cracked, worn-out optimism, strumming on an acoustic and slapping hard at a snare with a brush. It’s an old-timey sound with a modern dose of self-laceration, piano banging, melody lilting and honesty of the corrosive variety. The bright, positive architecture of “I’ve Got Me,” contains a nugget of biting insight. Sings Sternberg, “Between self-hatred and self-awareness is a very fine line.”
And yet while the self-examination is as brutal as, say, Alanis Morrisette or Courtney Love, the music is well-ordered, traditional and carefully constructed. The magic of I’ve Got Me comes in the way that brutal sentiment comes dancing in on skittery melody and how coruscating lines conform so neatly to classic song structure. Joanna Sternberg makes tales of betrayal and non-conformity sound like tunes from 1930s black and white musicals, and that’s an accomplishment.
